LAURA WELSH. When Laura Welsh speaks about her impulse to make music it sounds as if her life depends on it, or at the very least her emotional well-being. Shy and sensitive in person, Laura’s songwriting defies her introverted nature: her music is sparse and sophisticated and her lyrics are so confessional that the listening experience is akin to tracing the pages of a diary. The Staffordshire born singer has established herself as one of 2014’s most captivating artists because of her ability to phrase the most tangled thoughts into something simple and true. A private soul transformed by pop music. Stu Mag chats to singer-songwriter Laura Welsh following the release of her debut album, Soft Control‌ Words: Jessica Fogarty
Stu-Mag | 11
How would you describe your music? Electro-soul-pop with personal lyrics. I find it hard to have conversations about how I’m feeling – even in close relationships I wouldn’t spill it all out – but when I write it’s different, there’s no filter on what I say. What has been your most memorable career moment to date? Writing music with John Legend while out in LA on a writing trip. We sat around a piano and wrote for four hours. Also to get him on the record was a dream come true. What were the highlights of 2014? Festival season made my year – I played Glasto for the first time. I played alongside the Gorgon City boys which was incredible and unexpected. Festival shows are a lot of fun – so different to stage shows. At what age did you start performing? Most of my childhood, growing up in Staffordshire, was spent surrounded by sound: my mother was a local folk singer and from an early age music was an integral part of my make-up. It was natural that singing was something that I just could do. It was probably the only time that I didn’t have any inhibitions. Who or what inspires your music? I take inspiration from various styles of music. At the moment I’m listening to the new stuff from Flying Lotus, D’Angelo, Carole King and a lot of different soul artists. I grew up listening to my mother’s music and a record collection filled with straight-to-the-core country crooners like Patsy Cline. I became obsessed with
12 | Stu-Mag
the art of writing honest love songs, and after stealing my sister’s Prince and Michael Jackson albums, I became ensnared by the immediacy of big hooks and a memorable melody. I also take inspiration from watching live music – it makes me want to pick up a guitar – and watching short movies and viewing photography. I decided to open a Tumblr account recently to store all of the inspiring images I find. What do you have planned for 2015? I released my album on January 19th so I’m busy promoting this for the next couple of months. I’ve got a couple of intimate shows planned for America too which I’m excited about. I also want to take time to work on my live visuals. I like to take control of everything musically. Do you already have an established fan base in America? Surprisingly yes. It was overwhelming to be Single of the Week out there. I performed on a TV show out in the USA which helped to get my name out there as I’m a completely new name over that side of the world. I was very nervous but it was an incredible experience. Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions? Yes, to enjoy every moment and try not to overthink things too much.

Peace

T
rying to pin down the sound of Peace is a tricky business. The Birmingham-based four piece, brought together by bonds created by siblings, scrapping and school, have careered from the classroom to Columbia Records. The boys leapt into the hearts of the public with their joyously escapist debut album In Love in 2013. The album attempted to capture the live energy and sense of spontaneity that had made Peace one of the most sought-after live acts in the UK, gracing every tastemaker music front cover, playing two sold out Shepherds Bush Empire shows, and sticking a top 20 debut album in their back pocket. Their heart-on-
16 | Stu-Mag
sleeve indie anthemics, enthusiastic and youthful zing and an ability to write uplifting, soaring choruses saw an army of obsessive fans announce themselves up and down the country, tattooing Peace logos on various body parts and shaving it on the back of their heads. Student Mag meets Harry Koisser, lead singer of Midlands four piece, Peace, ahead of their second album release and UK headline tour set to stop off in Sheffield early 2015‌
than the first. The sound is natural but in a good way. The first album was more energetic. You’re just about to embark on a six week tour. Where are you looking forward to performing? Sheffield of course! It’s one of our favourite places. We played Queens Social Club once before when we supported Mystery Jets but it’ll be great to go back on our own headline tour. The first date [January 30th, 2015] has sold out so we’ve released a second date [January 31st, 2015]. Tell us about one of your most memorable band moments? We were once on a European tour in a van. We left one venue at 11pm and set off to Brussels. At around 2am we broke down in the middle of a motorway and had to sit outside in the cold for hours until our tour manager walked five miles for fuel. It’s more of a lowlight than a highlight but it sticks with me as a memorable moment. How would you describe your fans? Persistent and dedicated. Where is the most unexpected place you’ve been recognised by a fan? Bangkok. Why would people know us there? It’s so random that we have fans over there. We once played a South Korea festival where we were overwhelmed by the reaction too. It’s humbling. What’s been the secret to your success? I’ve been thinking recently we don’t know what we’re doing, we’re just doing it. If we had a manifesto it would probably be ‘We have no idea’, I quite like the way that stuff just seems to happen.
You released a brand new single – I’m A Girl – midJanuary. How would you describe the track? It’s the last track we wrote and recorded for our album. I was staying with a friend in Hackney when I had the idea for the song. It’s loud and cheeky yet delicate. Your second album – Happy People – is due for release February 9th. What should we expect? The songs on this album are better
Who are your music heroes? Jimmy Page, Elvis and David Bowie – just to name a few. Do you admire any artists currently in the charts? We’ve done a lot of pop covers for Radio One Live Lounge – most recently a Sam Smith cover is the style of Nivarna. Covering pop songs has made me appreciate the lyrics more than I had previously. So yeah, I’d say we respect Sam Smith for sure. What’s next for you? Management try not to tell me too much because I tell everyone everything and they don’t want me to reveal our gigs just yet. I do know we’ll be back on the festival scene in the summer. I’d love to play Glasto again. We’re going to be pretty full on for the next two years – we don’t have any breaks planned – so expect to see a lot more of us. Stu-Mag | 17
The Unthanks: Mount The Air After four years, The Unthanks are back with their latest album Mount The Air. Proven to be worth the wait, the tracks have an abundance of angelic harmonies and euphoric melodies leaving you to admire the all-female group’s sheer dedication to the intricate details of their 11 song album. The group embodies the fundamentals of Folk music, whilst the classical twist brings something modern to the music scene. Based on a traditional ditty found by Becky Unthank in a book of Dorset songs, the first single ‘Mount The Air’ exemplifies this sense of whimsical surrealism.
The gentle vocals of Rachel and Becky Unthank complement each other with their harmonic approach, almost blending smoothly into the sound of the world class trumpet player, Tom Arthurs. Unthanks have a loyal fan in Martin Freeman who said ‘If you’ve heard nicer
harmonies this year, I may call you a liar’. The Unthanks are set to put ‘Mount on Air’ on tour with a ten-piece ensemble from February 21st to showcase their incredible talent. Words: Caitlin James

Black Rivers Black Rivers, a new duo consisting of members Jez and Andy Williams (who were once a member of Doves), have already experience their fair share of success since forming in the summer of 2014. Their growing reputation only leads to high expectations for their upcoming self-titled album, Black Rivers. The band have received appraisal from NME when ‘The Ship’ featured on their On Repeat column, appointed Q Track of the day and their single ‘Voyager 1’ was selected for the A list of BBC6 music. Perhaps their biggest
18 | Stu-Mag
achievement, the band have secured tour dates supporting Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Elbow. Their alternative sound has proven very popular and the band are set to release a third track ‘The Forest’ from their album, overflowing with natural imagery and Northern Soul. Black River’s tour is set to start from February 5th with six headline shows and several support shows until March 10th.
Kitty, Daisy & Lewis: The Third A derelict Indian restaurant with an analogue studio in Camden Town saw the birth of Kitty, Daisy & Lewis’s third album. The sassy vocals from the trio match their upbeat tunes and together deliver some serious attitude. Described by the Observer as ‘A gift to those who still believe in magic’, it epitomises the group’s throwback from genres ranging from disco
to blues as each song takes us back in time. This is summed up by NME who described the band as ‘The sound of yesteryear, but also a band for the future’, with three different writers and a range of instruments, each track takes us somewhere different. The Durham siblings promise an album which exceeds the standard of their other music due to their new space and
equipment allowing them to as Kitty says, incorporate ‘more of our musical loves into our music’. With only three tour dates announced from February 16th, you better get in quick! Words: Caitlin James

Jamie Dornan bravely steps into the shoes of the iconic Christian Grey in the upcoming 50 Shades of Grey adaptation. A book that well and truly took the world by storm, becomes a film that promises the same as Anastasia Steel, actress Dakota Johnson, becomes enthralled in a steamy romance with the mysterious Mr. Grey. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson tastefully portrays the character’s rather risqué and X-rated relationship, exploring the depths of Grey’s controlling nature for the world to witness. And for that reason, I’d suggest this isn’t a film to bring your parents to!

out 6th february
An inspiring account of Martin Luther King’s three month battle in 1965 against violent opposition to secure equal voting writes. Ava DuVernay spectacularly portrays the famous non-violent march from Selma to Montgomery, as Martin Luther King attempts to provoke the racist Governor George Wallace. An insight into the brutal reality of our history, DuVernay presents a time of political unrest which saw a momentous change for the civil rights movement and altered history forever.

Love it or hate it, Hot Tub Time Machine is back for a sequel. The ridiculously surreal yet brilliantly funny comedy takes on a new slant as three familiar faces, Jacob, Nick and Lou (played by Clark Duke, Craig Robinson and Rob Corddry), find themselves dealing with the consequences of time travel. After Lou, the newly self-appointed owner of the internet, is murdered by a mysterious assassin, his loyal friends jump back into the hot tub find themselves 10 years into the future. A truly bizarre installment that takes time travel to a whole new level of entertainment.

The Girl on the Train Elizabeth is Missing In Real Life
by Paula Hawkins out 14th January Compared to the likes of Gone Girl, this captivating psychological thriller focuses on the life of Rachel, whose commute on the train every morning causes her to become a witness to a crime. Prone to drunken outbursts and blackouts, Rachel’s explanations to the police are dismissed. Left to uncover the truth herself behind the missing woman, some revelations leave her questioning her faith in the couple at number 15, who she once idolised from behind the train window. A skillfully written novel that immerses the reader in the lives of its conflicting characters with enough twists to keep you on the edge of your seat.
by Emma Healey out 1st January With the trend of amnesia fuelled thrillers comes the new Elizabeth is Missing, an insight into the life of Maud who suffers from dementia but remains insistent that her friend Elizabeth is missing - much to the annoyance of her daughter Helen. Among the clichés you’d expect from an 82-year old woman, Healey presents two mysterious and intricate timelines as the novel jumps between Elizabeth’s disappearance and the disappearance of Maud’s sister 70 years prior. Through fractured memories and crumpled written notes, a confused Maud attempts to piece together the events which have taken place, despite everyone’s distain for her wild claims.
by Chris Killen out 15 January An ironic but accurate title for a novel which focuses on romance among students in the digital age, where the internet is relied on to play matchmaker. Ian, Lauren and Paul went to university together, but 10 years on life is not what they expected. Lauren reopens an old Hotmail account to be met with powerful memories which ignite old feelings. Jump forward to 2015 and the old love triangle which formed between the friends is forced into one room to face their emotions without the help of technology. th
Curtain Call
by anthony Quinn out 8th January After stumbling unintentionally on an attempted murder at a London hotel room in 1936, Nina Land, a West End actress, faces a dilemma. At the hotel with a married man, Nina chooses the safety of an innocent woman over her own respectable reputation and reports her account to the police. Quinn weaves his novel between three important characters; Nina, her lover Jimmy Erskine and his secretary Tom, all dealing with their own troubles and connected to the attempted murder in their own way. This chilling murder mystery is encased within the dazzling nightlife of the 1930’s as two women are hunted by the same malevolent killer.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll be pleased that January is now done and dusted and Spring is inching that little bit closer. The start of the year is notoriously known as Detox time but is also the time when many people feel a little blue. So, let’s strike a balance. Prepare for your beach body, make your salary go that little bit further so you can book a dream summer break, but also treat yourself. ‘How do I achieve this?’ You ask, well we’ve been speaking to restaurants in Meadowhall and are taking inspiration from its fantastic choice of eateries. Our recommendation: Pop by Meadowhall to dine and then make it at home for a loved one… perhaps Valentine’s Day?

Every girl needs a denim jacket in her life. A summer staple is transformed into a winter must-have with Vicky’s denim aviator jacket with a fur lining that she swears by even on the coldest of days. With a day packed with revision, Vicky went for the trusty oversized knitted jumper and a pair of black velvet leggings to keep the cold at bay. To complete her comfy ensemble, Vicky threw on a pair of New Balance Trainers. Gym trainers are the holy grail of comfort, ideal for exam season.
Autumnal colours work well in winter too and Sam proves this by matching his forest green short parka with his burgundy hoody for some extra layers too. Sam’s attire is a mixture of colours and patterns, with a tartan lining and a purple corduroy collar all coming together as one winter ready outfit. Sam ties his outfit together with some matching accessories, including a pair of green trainers and a green backpack.

This effortless attire is finished off with a collarless primark pastel boyfriend coat, a typical spring trend that looks just as good as winter too. In keeping with her all black theme, Zarah coordinates her bucket bag to not distract away from her statement coat.
Saffron stands out from the crowd in this bold leopard print coat. Paired with some vibrant purple Doc Martens and a red scarf, Saffron ties bold prints and vibrant colours in a modern meets vintage look. The cherry on the top, Saffron’s baby pink pastel hair is a flawless addition to her daring look.

MiDrive Words: Jessica Fogarty Thinking about learning to drive? While studying at uni, there’s no real urgency to have a car – you have most conveniences available within walking distance. However, learning to drive now, while you have the spare time, could benefit you when your studies end. The Stu Mag team recently discovered miDrive – a free app which enables learners to pass their exams more quickly by providing them with tools such as the ability to easily track and review practice drives. Learners can also use miDrive’s marketplace to find the right driving instructor, which can reduce instruction costs by as much as £300. What is miDrive? miDrive uses technology to reinvent learning to drive. Online at miDrive.com and through the smartphone apps for iOS and Android, miDrive helps you find the best qualified driving instructors in your area, as recommended by other users of miDrive. When you’ve found your perfect driving instructor, you can use the miDrive app to contact them and arrange your lessons. You then continue to use the miDrive app to plan your timeline, follow your progress, track your lessons and practice for your theory test. miDrive is full of helpful videos, tips and advice to help you pass your test. So how does it work? When you sign up using the miDrive app, you let them know the timescales before you wish to pass your driving test. They then create a personalised timeline designed to help you reach your goal. As you progress through the timeline, they’ll send you activities to complete at exactly the right time. You can track all your driving lessons or practice drives, learn more about a manoeuvre, get some tips or practice for your theory test – all through one app. How much does miDrive cost? Its’s free to download and free to use. No catch. No exceptions. www.midrive.com

Gaming Angry Birds Epic
Broken Sword The Serpents Curse
9/ 10
7/ 0 1 Available on IPhone and Android
Available on PS Vita and PC
They ventured into outer space, starred in their own cartoon series, and even wrestled with the idea of Go-Kart racing, but now our favourite feathery icons have left their physics puzzling roots behind and nose-dived into an all new medium. Sticking with the all-familiar theme, (involving birds, pigs, and the ever iconic eggs), the feathered flock have found themselves yet again in the midst of an all-out war, and in the form of a cute strategic RPG nonetheless. Angry Birds Epic is, underneath it all, a game with familiar roleplaying mechanics, but a far cry from the norm; there’s no princess to rescue or the customary “chosen one”, nor are their side-quests to unlock or towns to explore. No, Angry Birds Epic is a nonstop consecutive procession of turn-based fights that are selected from a slightly linear (and rather Mario-esque) map. The battles can be a little repetitive after a while, no word of a lie, but the fights are enjoyable for the most part. More entertaining than most RPGs is the ability to switch between a variety of attacks and spells in order to defeat the baddies. Once the game opens up a little and you finally have a crew of badass birdies to kick some butt, it certainly becomes more entertaining and less tiresome.
A lot of coffee is drunk in Broken Sword 5. Certainly in the game’s first half, which formed a rather crude Episode One when it was first released at the end of last year. Many scenes revolve around a lovingly drawn Parisian café, where heroes George Stobbart and Nico Collard meet up and sip tiny cups of black java while discussing their latest case. It’s cosy and intimate, a tone that applies to the whole game. This is yet another retro series revived thanks to crowdfunding from fans, and Broken Sword 5 has taken that investment as permission to abandon the awkward earlier attempts to evolve the title in more commercial action-adventure directions. The Serpent’s Curse is a retro game through and through, unfurling its point-and-click pleasures at a relaxed pace, and filling its corners with in-jokes that only the faithful will appreciate. As is traditional for the series, the plot kicks off with very little time wasted. A mysterious painting has been stolen from a Paris gallery and the gallery owner has been shot and killed in the process. George Stobbart is on the scene as an investigator for the insurance company, while his companion Nico is still working as a journalist and smells a scoop that could finally land her the front page. The Broken Sword series has wobbled in the past when trying to appeal to the mainstream, particularly in its dalliances with consoles, so it’s hard to begrudge this return to its PC roots a little indulgence. It’s as much a victory lap for those who kept the faith as it is a fresh start for a beloved saga.
Overall a fun game but can get repetitive - and make sure you don’t spend all your hard earned money on add-ons! 7/10

Beaut y
on a budget Helen Pass, beauty expert at Sheffield salon ‘The Works Hair and Beauty’, shares her top tips for looking at your best on budget in 2015... We can all feel a little skint and spotty after the festive season, but not to worry as spring/summer 15 is upon us and with it comes some low budget ways to add a bit of high fashion to our beauty routines. • Taking good care of your skin will make applying your makeup so much easier. Remember to exfoliate 2-3 times a week to remove dull dead cells that can attract oil and bacteria, follow up with a suitable moisturiser, an amount the size of a pea should be enough to keep the skin hydrated without feeling greasy. • This year keeping contouring to a minimum is on a lot of catwalks, so is a must! This will allow us to shine in other areas, such as a bit of subtle glitter for the eyes, apply close to the lashes for a barely there look. • Get creative with the products you already have! Eyeshadow can double up as an edgy bronzer, just take your fullest brush and sweep across a whole palette of similar colours and let the different shades and tones do their work. Bold lipsticks for the eyes? Why not! This is being used backstage at a lot of shows this year. Using an eyeliner brush apply to the inner under eye just halfway across making sure you have nice clean lines, this will draw attention to those gorgeous eyes! Corals work really well to warm up the tone of most skins. • For the hands, nude colours are everywhere at the moment. Soak the nails in warm water and lemon juice to lift off any stains from the strong shades we worked through winter. After a few minutes your cuticles will be soft enough to be gently pushed back for a professional manicured look.

Sex and the Steel City
Is technology making us weaker?
I
hadn’t realised how much technology ruled our lives until a conversation I had with my mother recently. My brother and I were out for dinner with her, complaining about our love lives and how sad we both were at the time. She then piped up and said we were both extremely weak, which surprised her as both her and my dad are strong individuals who would never have caved into exes or been ‘pathetic’ as she described us. This made me think. Why is it that we were both so weak in comparison to them? Our friends would describe us both as strong individuals, so why when it came to members of the opposite sex were we so feeble? And it dawned on me that the only explanation for it could be: technology. Nowadays when you’re out drunk and at your most vulnerable it’s ridiculously easy to send a drunken text or WhatsApp, pouring your heart out to someone you really shouldn’t. Cue a drunken text conversation where you tell each other how much you miss each other and two hours later your back together with no real effort put in from either of you. Even guys that are ‘friends with benefits’ don’t need to make any effort to have a girl in the palm of their hands. They could be lying in bed, watching a movie, send you a loving message such as ‘cum round later?’ And you’re sold. Five hours and a bottle of wine later you find yourself ringing their doorbell after a night out and the guy has got you right where he wants you. What a difference from the 70s and 80s when my parents were growing up. Back then if a couple
48 | Stu-Mag
broke up there was no WhatsApp, Snapchat or even mobiles to ring and drunkenly profess your love for one another. Back then you would have had to send a lovesick letter or trekked all the way to your lovers house to admit your mistake. Could you really picture any twenty-something guy doing that for a girl now?! Another issue with technology making us weaker is Facebook and Twitter. When you break up with someone now you still know every little detail of their life - from which restaurant they’ve checked in at, to who they’ve been spending time with on a night out. It’s incredibly hard to to push someone out of your mind and move on when their face pops up on your newsfeed on a daily basis. Back in the 70s and 80s no such thing exists. After you broke up, that was it. There was no checking their Facebook profile or looking at their latest tweet to see how well they’re getting on without you. It was much easier to put them out of your mind, and like my mother, be stronger. So the only conclusion I can come to is that technology is to blame. It has ruined romance and any chivalry that may have been left in men. If it wasn’t so prominent in our lives it would be easier to disentangle ourselves from past loved ones. So ladies, my advice to you: stay strong and don’t accept any plea from a guy unless he’s made an effort that goes above and beyond a drunken message. Instead wait for the guy that is willing to go that extra mile to show you exactly how much he cares, without the use of technology. Words: G iulia S mith

DRUGS || Words: Jessica Fogarty
White powders No way to know the difference Any illegal drugs can be dangerous. But the risks can be much greater when you are on holiday, buying drugs from unknown sources. There is no way to know exactly what you are taking. As you might have seen in the news recently, there have been a number of deaths of British tourists in Amsterdam by snorting white heroin, mistaken for cocaine. If you are travelling to Amsterdam or anywhere on holiday, make sure to think carefully and consider what you're doing.
charlie, chang & percy Cocaine has many different street names, such as charlie, chang, percy, coke, cheddar and gizz. It can give a powerful high that can leave you feeling really down. You’ve probably heard of coke but here are 10 things we bet you didn’t know about the drug:
1. Possession can get you up to seven years in jail. 2. Alcohol and cocaine together can be particularly dangerous, as they mix together in the body to produce a toxic chemical, called cocaethylene. 3. Snorting cocaine will seriously damage the cartilage in your nose that separates the nostrils; some heavy users have lost the cartilage and end up with just one really big nostril. Sexy. 4. When the effects of any cocaine start to wear off the crash period sometimes lasts for days afterwards.
5. Babies born to mothers who used cocaine during the pregnancy tend to be born prematurely, have low birth weights, and suffer from brain damage.
9. A wrap of cocaine powder can be cut with many harmful things, such as sugar or starch, but benzocaine is most common. Benzocaine is a local anaesthetic.
6. It raises the body’s temperature and makes the heart beat faster.
10. If the police catch you with cocaine, they’ll always take some action. This could include a formal caution, arrest and prosecution. A conviction for a drug-related offence could have a serious impact. It can stop you visiting certain countries – for example the United States – and limit the types of jobs you can apply for.
7. Allowing other people to use cocaine in your house is illegal. If the police catch people using it they can prosecute person holding the party. 8. The effects of crack smoking usually peak for about two minutes and last for only 10 minutes.

The theme of the Art program, Kinetic Art, will result in over 20 smaller and bigger acts and art installations from our very own Kinetic Art Collective. Want to sleep over to experience the complete weekend? DGTL deploys limited cottages for only 33 euro per person per night, just a five-minute walk from the festival grounds. For the whole program, tickets and travel information, take a look at the website: www.dgtl.nl.

Jessica Fogarty

Jessica Fogarty

Black Rivers
The Unthanks: Mount The Air
Kitty, Daisy & Lewis: The Third

Jessica Fogarty
07 | Stu-Mag
