The LaFontaines Scotland’s The LaFontaines take guitar infused hip hop and pop to create a stylised sound which is refreshingly unique. Their lyrical content is a social commentary of Scottish culture while still maintaining a traditional pop format. Intrigued? Find out more… Words: Jessica Fogarty

You have a very unique sound. How would you describe your music style? It’s hard to try and describe something that doesn’t really exist anywhere else. It’s the gift and the curse of what we do. If we were to try fitting it around the industry’s given framework, I almost feel that it would do us an injustice. People really need to see and hear this band live to understand what we’re all about. Where are you all from? How did you meet? We are from the very beautiful but equally dark town of Motherwell, and couldn’t be more proud of that fact. We’re all local boys from roughly the same area, who happened to have an interest in music, all be it at vastly different ends of the spectrum. Myself and Iain the guitarist, were the main instigators in getting the ball rolling I suppose, the other three were just daft enough to jump on board. You try selling Hip-Hop/Rock/Pop outfit with a Scottish lead vocal and see how you get on… Who came up with the band name? It’s a homage to the late, great voice actor Don LaFontaine! We contacted him one night and asked if he’d do us the honour of recording an introduction for our set. We honestly couldn’t believe it when he got back saying “sure thing”. Apparently his daughters were blown away that their old dad had a group named after him. I set about writing his script, which took about a week to refine. Sadly in that time Don had passed away. Yup… I was reading the paper like a week later and there it was… So now we’re effectively a tribute act. 8 | Stu-Mag

What inspires your music? Our songs are a sort of social commentary, where we touch on everything that’s going on in our lives, from the monotony of working 9 to 5 in our mundane jobs, to being invited to some crazy rooftop parties in NY with Lindsay Lohan. That shit actually happened, otherwise it would just be a crap celebrity we’ve picked to base this around!

10 | Stu-Mag

Great to have you in Sheffield – What do you think of the city? Have you been before? Sheffield reminds me so much of home… In the fact that it looks pretty shit. Every time we’ve been here (twice) its been pouring it down with rain and its always just really grey looking. HOWEVER! The people here are class. We always try and hit up a few local pubs wherever we go, like local working men’s pubs, it’s always where you get the best chat and find out about the heart of the city. You’ve played alongside some big industry names – including Tinie Tempah, Example, Twin Atlantic and Kids in Glass Houses. What was that like? Example was a top guy, Twin are our mates for life and KIGH gave us a shout out on stage, so I suppose they’re pretty nice guys as well. Tinie I feel it would be unfair to comment on, as we’ve never actually played with him (other than being on the same T in the Park bill in 2012) or seen him anywhere. Actually, I did see him backstage at T In The Park. He was about 150 yards away from me and was laughing, hopefully not at me. What has been the most memorable moment for La Fontaines to date? That’s pretty hard to answer to be honest. I’m proud of lots of things we’ve done. Headlining the BBC Introducing stage at T In The Park, full UK tours supporting some major acts like Twin Atlantic, playing to over 12,000 people in one sitting, going to New York for free to play our music (passing the working VISA assessment to get into the country as well actually…) all that shits cool. But I think our biggest achievement is that we’ve made something, which is entirely our own. You won’t find another LaFontaines down the road, you can’t put us in a box. We make something which is truly unique and original, and for that I am most proud. Who are your music influences? As a band though, I’d say we draw from all our individual preferences rather than a collective interest in one type of music. Darren is all about his synths, Iain loves a bit of punk and old school hip-hop, Jamie is the soul man, John loves a bit of pop...and I listen exclusively to Nickelback. I jest but there is no way you can fuck with ‘Something in your mouth’. What a song/concept.

Is there anyone you’d like to collaborate with? That’s a tough one, because it’s sort of like how far do you take it? Are we talking realistically for where we are as a band at the moment? Or do we mean if I could make anything happen, whom would I choose? I’ll just answer both. Realistically, I think it be cool to work something out with Canterbury. I love Mike and Luke’s vocals and I also happen to think that Canterbury are one of the best bands I have ever seen live. So that be cool, and I think we’d come up with something pretty special. In dream land… OUTKAST! You played T in the Park this summer - how was that? And what’s your previous experiences at festivals? Playing live is where this band finally makes perfect sense. It’s where all the preconceptions beforehand go out the window. Where people suddenly stop caring about genre and where things should be placed, and just seem to let go and have a good time. I can almost predict it to the exact point it happens. If they’ve never heard the band before, it usually takes about three songs. You see them start to let go toward the end of the third song. Then we drop “Pon De Fonts” on them. If you have ever been to one of our shows before, you know exactly what happens then. TITP was our third consecutive year on the bill. We’ve built our way up from what was now an infamous show (we were the first unsigned band to shut the T-break stage down) when we first played in 2012. Last year we headlined the BBC Introducing Stage, which was a huge moment for us. What’s next for you? You have a huge Scottish Following, are you ready to take on the rest of the world? The plan for this year is to get this album recorded and serviced to the masses, before the end of 2014. Tour as much as possible and sell out shows up and down the UK. Apart from that, I would love my PS2 back. Someone broke into our tour bus the other month and stole it. I was on year seven of my Master League in Pro Evolution Soccer as well. They even stole my memory card. Some people just don’t know the devastating effects their actions have on others!

Twin Atlantic Great Divide

Words: Emily Whyatt

Out now.

Since the release of their debut album ’Free’ three years ago, Twin Atlantic have played some 300 gigs and sold more than 100,000 records in the process. Now the band return and are ready for the big time with new album ‘Great Divide’, 12 stadium-sized rock anthems set to be released. Produced by Jacknife Lee and Gil Norton, known for previously working with the likes of U2, REM, Pixies and Foo Fighters, ‘Great Divide’ is packed with energy and oozing optimism from start to finish. Approximately 90 per cent of the album was said to be written in the back of a tour bus and this is clear through the tracks that explore the challenges of being on the road and the thrill of performing to tens of thousands of fans each night. Addictive, arms-aloft anthems with instantly catchy choruses, this album is driven by guitars and drums with the occasional piano and strings. Lyrics sung in Sam McTrusty’s strong Scottish accent express the group’s long-held love of pop while grown-up emotions get transformed into chant-along slogans. Pop hooks and harmonies abound on such songs like ‘Hold On’, an ode to self-belief. The stunning ‘Brothers and Sisters’ boasts a soft-loud dynamic set to shimmering guitars, bulked up by multi layered vocals, a track dedicated to those who refuse to give up on their dreams. While flamboyant first single ‘Heart and Soul’ is a dirty rock stomper 14 | Stu-Mag

music

that sums up the shared feelings of a bouncing festival crowd with nods to both classic Bon Jovi and Queen anthems. Originally, the band intended ‘Great Divide’ to be an album for people who ‘don’t dance and didn’t intend to’ but the result has been a series of tracks so full of energy it’s near impossible to stand still!

Hyde and Beast

Keep Moving Words: ABBY JACKSON

Out now.

Dave Hyde and Neil Bassett have been through the mill the last 12 months but these experiences of bereavement, personal loss and despair has seen the band at their most productive. The drummer-turned-songwriting duo have produced their most emotionally invigorating recordings to date with new album ‘Keep Moving’, released in August 2014. The album consists of a series of songs that are happy sounding, but lyrically, you can hear the melancholy mood the two are trying to get across. Tracks like ‘Open Your Heart’ spark links to The Jackson 5’s: ‘I want you back’ or Smokey Robinson’s: ‘Tears of a Clown’. The more emotional focus of this second album draws together the pair’s love of obscure, psychedelic 60s and 70s tunes, producing infectious pop hooks and instantly memorable choruses that wouldn’t seem out of place at a festival campfire. Tracks go from the slightly vaudeville, jazzy sounds found in ‘Like A Grass’ to the darker, sombre riffs of ‘Suits Me Fine’. As the guys explain: “Despite what’s happened, we’re not sad about things. We try to look on the bright side if we can, so the lyrics are on the downside but they’re sung in an upbeat manner.”

‘Keep Moving’ seems a fitting title for this album as the pair disclose their idea behind it: when you’re going through hell it’s best to keep going. Through this, Hyde and Beast have managed to take their knockabout, late night studio project and turned it into one of summer’s soon to be worst kept secrets!

The Dunwells Leeds-based band The Dunwells formed in 2009 and haven’t looked back since. Brothers Joseph and David Dunwell and cousins Robert Clayton and Jonny Lamb originally formed as a result of their love of bands like Bon Iver, Damien Rice and Elbow. The band released their new EP Show Me Emotion on September 8th, and we managed to grab a quick word with Joseph (Joe) Dunwell about their new album, touring and the US:

It’s been an amazing few years for you guys. You’ve played in the UK and US, been signed by Playing In Traffic and started working with producer Stephen Harris, who has experience with Kodaline and fellow Leeds band Kaiser Chiefs. Has any of this managed to sink in yet? It’s a bit crazy at the moment. We’ve had the first album and all these opportunities and now we’ve been able to record the album we wanted to record in the first place. We loved Kodaline’s album and that’s how we found Stephen [Harris]. We’ve been working with him and it’s been mental. 18 | Stu-Mag

We’re excited to get out there again. Are you excited about your new EP Show Me Emotion? Can’t wait. We’ve been in and out of the studio, finalising the new EP and album. We’re still writing with Stephen at the moment. What’s behind the name of the EP? It’s the title track of the EP and almost the introduction to our new sound. It’s one of those songs. With the cogs and hearts on the album art, it just felt right. What kind of a reaction are you hoping to get from your fans to Show Me Emotion? Just to enjoy what we’re doing. We love playing live and it’s good knowing we’re doing that again. Our new album doesn’t sound too dissimilar when we play it live to when it’s on the album, so that’ll be good for the fans.

makes you realise that the UK is really small! Our first show is in Leeds and we normally have our last gig there, but we’re kicking it of in Leeds instead. You played Tramlines Festival here in Sheffield in July. What was the Tramlines experience like for you? It was ace. We were playing a few festivals like that around then, where people flood in and out of the venues and see so much in one day. When we first turned up at the venue it had nobody in it and then was packed. They were extreme festival goers at Tramlines who know where to be and when! It was a real buzz.

If you had to pick your favourite track from the EP, which would you choose and why? To record, it’s ‘Show Me Emotion’. The process and the whole song was first written on acoustic guitar. The process of our first album was different in the studio and we built the instrumental onto the songs instead of starting with it. Working with Stephen Harris has made it all possible. To perform live, it’s ‘The Best Is Yet To Come’ because I feel like the best is still to come from us. The Dunwells have been a huge hit in the US, playing festivals like Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, as well as performing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Has that experience shaped you as a band? We’re so ready and so strong. We were doing seven weeks on and three weeks off in the US and we got really good at being on the road. We’re excited to go back on the road with new material. We’re ready for it.

What’s the best venue that you’ve ever played at? Red Rocks in Colorado. It’s an amazing amphitheatre and it’s great to say we’ve played there. When it comes to performing live, embarrassing moments can happen. Who would you say has had the worst so far? Probably Dave [David Dunwell]. We were playing The Rock Boat Festival and on the first song the straps snapped on his guitar and it broke. We normally try and keep ourselves to ourselves and stay away from trouble! Every year the band is going from strength to strength. What’s next for The Dunwells over the coming year and beyond? We’ve been constantly writing and we’re excited for new material, but we’re going to keep writing. There’s been a long wait between the first album and the new EP and album so we don’t want to do that again. Words: Joss Woodend

You’ve been touring the UK again this September, including playing a gig at Plug in Sheffield on September 13th. Are you excited to be touring back here again? It’s great to be home. Being in the US Stu-Mag | 19

You Me At Six You Me At Six have come a long way since the release of their debut single ‘Save It For The Bedroom’ in 2007. Three of their albums have landed in the top five in the UK Albums Chart, with their most recent, Cavalier Youth, landing top spot and five of their tracks have entered into the UK Top 40 Singles Chart. Now, it’s looking like the band could land yet another UK Top 40 single with their new track, ‘Room To Breath’. The track is impressive, showing how strong lead singer Josh Franceschi’s vocals have become and how much the

mike dignam He’s spent the early months of 2014 writing music with Jake Bugg; received massive support from BBC Radio Lancashire Introducing; and has been picked as Huw Stephens’ introducing track of the week on BBC Radio One. Mike Dignam is rapidly rising the musical ranks and is an artiste to look out for over the coming months. There seems to be no stopping the Preston-born singersongwriter. Dignam managed to sell out the Sheffield date of his

tour Sing With Me this July, as well as spend time on tour with Lewis Watson, Lawson, Gabrielle Aplin and 5 Seconds of Summer in both the UK and Australia. As if this isn’t enough, he’s had his debut music video ‘Hurt’ released via VEVO and had his new EP It Was Written released on August 10th. With tons of fans behind him and an already impressive selection of music, it won’t be long before Mike Dignam is all over our radios. The 24-year-olds passion for music and his fans will take him a long way. We’re starting to see all his hard work pay off.

Sophie Kinsella first introduced readers to Becky Bloomwood in her 2000 book, Confessions of a Shopaholic where the lovable Becky lands a job at a saving magazine advising readers on how to save money, while her own debt spirals out of control. More than a decade later, Becky has stormed Manhattan, married the guy of her dreams, Luke and had a beautiful baby. In the seventh book in the series, Becky and family move to Los Angeles - city of herbal smoothies and multimillion-dollar yoga retreats and the lure of celebrity. Luke is there to help manage the career of famous actress Sage Seymour—and Becky is convinced she is destined to be Sage’s personal stylist. However things become complicated when Becky joins the team of Sage’s arch-rival without telling Luke.

Colm Toilin is one of contemporary literature’s bestselling and most beloved authors, and he’s back with a magnificent new novel set in Ireland. Nora Webster follows the story of Nora, A woman who has been widowed at forty and left with four children and not enough money. Nora is on a downward spiral of depression and grief. Oblivious to the suffering of her young sons, who have lost their father, Nora is drowning in her own sorrow. Yet throughout this sadness Nora finds solace in a long lost love of hers, singing. Will this be enough to help her find herself and happiness again?

Jodi Picoult is well-known for her books that pick a controversial topic and then weave it into a character’s story. Her latest novels ‘Leaving Time’ is all about the incredible bond between a mother and her daughter. Jenna is a girl whose mother Alice disappeared in the wake of a tragic accident when she was young, refusing to believe that she would be abandoned as a young child, Jenna is determined to find her. Jenna pours through her mother’s journals, which are filled with exciting and intriguing stories about her scientific research with elephants. Throughout her search Jenna enlists the help of a psychic and a detective. As the three work together to uncover what happened to Alice, they realize that in asking hard questions, they’ll have to face even harder answers.

2. The Pointing Dog So it may not be the most student-friendly venue in town but it’s certainly the city’s new go-to destination on payday. The Pointing Dog opened its doors on Ecclesall Road in May and has fast become one of Sheffield’s most highly sought-after venues. Housed in a Victorian building that was for 50 years the Polish Ex-Serviceman’s Club, The Pointing Dog has retained the old membership policy which means you need to sign-up online or at the door – a rule which adds an air of exclusivity while saving the owners the hassle of changing the license. The £1.5m refurbishment of the venue was invested well. Bare plaster walls, graphic metalwork, factory and studio-style lighting and a mesh-clad bar reputed to be the largest in the city gives the venue a cool, New York City vibe. 516 Ecclesall Road - 0114 266 0742

2. 4. Carluccios

1.

Enjoy a taste of Italy at Carluccios – the latest venue to join a long line of eateries on Ecclesall Road. Founded by celebrity chef, Antonio Carluccio, the menu features a variety of fish, meat, pastas and salad dishes. The man himself arrived in the city to join the launch celebrations during the summer and was seen soaking up the sun on the outside terrace. The all-day city venue has seating for 88 people inside and ten outside. 509 Ecclesall Road - 0114 266 3261 Words: Jessica Fogarty

FRESHER’S FOOD We’re sure you’ve heard the horror stories – former GUIDE students will tell you to expect your academic years to be Words: Phoebe Seymour

fuelled by 10p noodles and beans on toast. But fear not! A decent meal out in Sheffield does not necessarily mean dipping into your overdraft just yet. Here’s our choice of the tastiest restaurants and take-aways in the affordable Steel City.

The Beehive 240 West Street Let’s lunch! “I can’t afford a pub lunch!” I hear you cry. Oh yes you can! Beehive is always doing Weatherspoon style meal deals but Monday Madness is a particular meal deal you don’t want to miss. Choose sausage and mash, chilli, scampi, a burger or hunter’s chicken from their Monday menu and you only pay an incredible £2.49! What’s even more incredible is that it tastes great too. Go try it yourself if you don’t believe us.

Amigos 272 London Road This independent Mexican restaurant and take-away boasts big, tasty portions at a cheaper than average price. You will be more than satisfied with a large burrito wrap starting at £6.50, but if you want to split some wedges or nachos on the side, these come with a selection of irresistible guacamole, salsa and warm cheese dips. Follow this with a selection of sweet and sticky desserts or the pricier Ben and Jerry’s ice creams for thowse wanting to treat themselves for £4.95, and neither your stomach, nor your bank balance, will regret it!

Kebabish 54-56 London Road Although Kebabish suggests, well kebabs, they also do a selection of beef and chicken burgers. The cheapest, lamb kebab and margarita pizza are priced at £3. The special offers and meals for two and four people are not too shabby either and are ideal as you need to spend over £8 for home delivery. Bloo88 182 West Street Be sure to book a table because Bloo88 must be the most popular pizza place in Sheffield! More of a bar than a restaurant, they do a variety of refreshing 2 for 1 cocktails and large 2 for 1 pizzas cooked in their blazing clay oven. The shabby-chic décor and delicious thin rolled pizzas will make you feel like you are dining in luxury but the most expensive BOGOF pizza is £10.95 meaning you and a friend will only ever spend about a fiver each. We recommend the Florentina topped with spinach, black olives, mozzarella and a baked egg in the middle.

food CHACHAICE

I

t’s the first of its kind in Sheffield – a contemporary Chinese café serving up authentic desserts from Snow Ice to Bubble Tea and Sago Desserts. Having recently undergone a big refurbishment, ChaChaIce now boasts two floors of seating, with a Chinese and English combined décor – traditional English country wooden tables with Chinese wall art and flat screen TVs. The ideal hangout for students before and after lectures. “It’s been a popular concept in cities like London and Manchester for many years, so due to demand we’re bringing it to Sheffield for the first time” says café manager Stacey Lim. “The menu has been adapted to tempt the taste buds of both our Chinese and English customers too” adds Stacey. “We’ve found that the dishes combining favourite ingredients from both countries have proven most successful.” Choose from nine flavours of Snow Ice – a sort of smoothie and ice cream unique blend. Chinese favourites include: Bubble Milk Tea and Lychee while English favourites include fruit yogurt, mango and biscotti. There’s also a choice of crepes, waffles, cakes, macaroons and sago desserts – all home-made fresh on site each day. The sago dessert menu features grass jelly sago, mango and glutinous rice balls and coconut milk sago. Cake flavours include:

Oreo, Ferrero Rocher, golden apple or green tea and red bean. Bubble Tea, also known as pearl or boba milk tea is fast becoming a favourite refreshment on the menu. Invented in Taiwan, the tea-based drink comes in 16 flavours – from honeydew melon to passion fruit and mocha mixed with red or green tea. Plus there’s with a choice of five toppings. If you prefer something simpler, choose from a choice of traditional teas, flavoured teas and coffees. The café is open Monday to Sunday from 9.30am – 9pm. “We serve up a traditional oriental breakfast – available all day – but it’s at lunch, dinner and late evenings when the sweet treats are in demand” says Stacey.

“The portions are plentiful – enough to share between two or a group of friends could share a selection between them. And it’s affordable too – just £5pp for a drink and dessert.” Chacha Ice 142 Devonshire Street Sheffield S3 7SF 0114 276 0305 Words: Jessica Fogarty

he start of a new term is exciting, but once the novelty starts to wear off then getting your head around lectures - and all the work that follows - is exhausting. You’re going to need good, hot coffee to get yourself through, and lots of it. Preferably on a drip. So we’ve teamed up with Sheffield coffee aficionados Cafeology to give one lucky reader free Fairtrade coffee for the whole of October. You’ll see the brand around the city at places like Sheffield Theatres, university outlets, cafes, bars and restaurants. But they have their own outlet too, based in the entrance to the Decathlon sports store near the bottom of The Moor, offering take away and ‘drink in’ options. The Cafeology coffee ‘pod’ offers a range of barista-made hot drinks, starting from just £1.60, and use milk from Our Cow Molly - a Sheffield farm delivering fresh milk from their cows every morning. Where To Go Guide University of Sheffield Student’s Union: Foundry, Studio & Fusion Don’t get me wrong, most Universities have absolutely naff SU’s - but for the second year in a row, UoS’s Union has been voted the best in the country. From nights like ROAR (for sports teams) to Pop Tarts (for anyone who loves cheesy music), the SU has so much on offer. The best nights are Tuesdays, though, without a shadow of a doubt. The biggest DJs across the UK, even the occasional global act, arrive in Sheffield and get the crowds to go mental. It is very, very rare to have such edgy events held at an SU. Buy tickets in advance.

The Leadmill

Congratulations on making it into one of the universities at Sheffield! You’re in for a right treat. The student lifestyle is infamous for all the nights out we go on, so we’ve put together a guide to help you get to know the nightlife in Sheffield, and where to go…

Hope Works Welcome to one of the UKs most underrated warehouse venues: Hope Works. This is basically a more friendly, intimate version of Manchester’s the Warehouse Project; minus the annoying crowd. Everyone here has the same hopes of just having a fun night dancing away to your favourite Soundcloud DJs. In the past couple of years, the likes of Boddika, Floating Points and Ben UFO have graced Hope Works. However, beware: most clubs in Sheffield have offers on drinks, Hope Works is not one of these places.

Best nights: Friday and Saturday Best nights: Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturdays.

(whenever the events are held, basically.)

A stone’s throw away from the train station, Leadmill is a student hotspot in Sheffield. Stereotypically ‘indie’, Sheffield’s own Arctic Monkeys and Pulp usually have a few songs played throughout the night. Alternative tunes dominate room one in the two-roomed club, and the second room is usually always dedicated to chart or dance music, so there’s usually something for everyone. Apart from on Saturdays, when the local’s descend, Leadmill is dirt cheap (usually £1.80 for a double vodka and mixer), but weekends are pricy. When doors close at Leadmill, it’s student tradition to pay a drunken visit to the McDonalds across the road. Also, keep an eye out on the gigs held at Leadmill.

Best nights: Monday or Friday

Tip: Search the Facebook pages of club nights and like to keep in the loop

The Night Kitchen Formerly DLS, this is another one of Sheffield’s hidden gems. You’ll get plenty of Edgy Gal Sheffield points if you, a Fresher, turn up to this outskirts-of-Sheffield warehouse. Similar to Hope Works but better decorated, The Night Kitchen has seen a number of exciting acts play here.

Best nights: Selected Fridays and Saturdays 38 | Stu-Mag

Viper Rooms Viper Rooms is open every day of the week and it’s more often than not brimming with students. Like most clubs, if you go on the right nights, you’ll be able to get to a good level of drunk for under a tenner. This club has a cool basement part, however only venture down there if you’re prepared to sweat. A lot. And probably deck it down the stairs.

Best nights: Tuesday & Wednesday (and Thursday for Carver Street Block Party)

Fez Club Club-come-warehouse, Fez is becoming one of the biggest nights in Sheffield. Known for its late night/early morning finishes, make sure you get some caffeine in you before you turn up to party. This Autumn looks to be an exciting time for Fez; with acts like Skream, Route 94 and Hot Since 82 playing in the next few weeks. Tip: drinks are cheaper at Fez on their regular club nights than their big events.

Best nights: see Facebook page.

Plug Plug is another one of Sheffield’s ‘all-rounder’ clubs. Smack-bang in the city centre, it’s also one of the biggest venues on offer and it’s usually rammed packed. Again, there’s a number of different rooms with different genres of music playing, and throughout Freshers Week, Plug usually host a number of different special events to welcome all you newbies. Cheeky Vimto pints are typically £2.

Best nights: Tuesday and Thursday

The Harley

DQ

The Harley is a student favourite for one reason: it’s open until very late. It’s also easily one of the best places to go to in Sheffield for live music, with acts such as Maribou State playing in the past. Standard prices (so expensive for a student), but they have a great range of rums on offer. Also, try out their famous burgers the day after to sort your hangovers out!

Monday’s at DQ are hard to compete with. Tickets, like for most clubs in Sheffield, can be bought in advance via their Facebook page, and they usually fly out- so buy early! Turn up before 11.30pm to try your chances at buying tickets on the door. Anyway, DQ plays a mix of Hip Hop, RnB, Chart and House music – so there’s always plenty of people throwing some shapes. DQ have a massive range of cheap drinks on different nights and it’s typically £5 for a ticket. Look out for the Souljam events here, too; they never disappoint.

Best nights: see their Facebook

Best nights: Monday and Saturday

West Street Live Now, I know we’ve told you about loads of cheap nights out in Sheffield – but WSL really takes the biscuit in terms of booze bargains (£5 for 3x bottles of Budweiser, etc.). If you end up going out on a social with a society, chances are you’ll pay this pub-come-bar a visit. They play lots of Motown and Soul classics, which if you think you’re not into, you’ll probably surprise yourself with how many big tunes you recognise there. It’s not the biggest venue, though, so prepare for weekends when both students and locals will be out (cramped alert).

Best nights: any weekday Stu-Mag | 39

What’s the best thing about being a student in Sheffield?

Sandie Szawlowski, 21, Economics The nightlife and the people. Just generally Sheffield. There’s lots of things to do and it’s pretty.

Peter Backhouse, 20, Biomedical Sciences I love having the Peak District so close and Weston Park and all the green space. In summer it’s nice to just get out instead of being stuck in a city all the time. It’s a good place to run as well.

Lewis Ottaway, 22, Zoology I like the city itself. It’s not like London with all the hustle and bustle, but there’s always something to do. It feels like a town and quite personal. If you go to West Street, you can go for a messy night out, or you can go to Division Street, if you want a more cultured drink. The Peak District is just a bus ride away and I like the friendly people. The Zoology department is really good as well.

50 | Stu-Mag

Elliot Reynolds, 20, Engineering Prep Year Everything’s pretty central. You’ve got Hillsborough ten minutes down the road and then Ecclesall Road five minutes down the other road. It’s got loads of skate parks and everyone in Sheffield is pretty happy.

Joe Mills, 21, Chemistry The fact that you’re about 15 minutes away from the countryside no matter what and you can always go out and find something new to do.

Natalie Paul, 21, Chemistry I like studying in Sheffield because you get the freedom to do what you want with it being close to the countryside and with it being a city university instead of a campus, you can meet lots of people who are not students. So you get to meet a variety of people.

My student experience Words: Joss Woodend

S

heffield is a big student city, housing both Sheffield Hallam University and The University of Sheffield, so your first few weeks here are bound to be busy. With lots of people to meet, registration to do, accommodation to move into, money to manage, there’s a lot to take in. But it’s not something to worry about. However hectic your first few weeks are, everything will soon settle down and you’ll get to know Sheffield and your university like the back of your hand. One of the first things you’ll experience is moving into shared accommodation. Here you will find out where you’ll be living for the next year, meet your new flatmates and discover the perils of washing up. Your first year accommodation will provide you with so many memories, from that time you invented the newest corridor sport to that time somebody left a tin of beans in the fridge for a tad too long. Whether you’re living together, on the same course or just bump into each other on campus, you’re going to meet loads of people. A great way to meet people outside of your accommodation and course is to join a society. Both universities offer all sorts of societies within their unions, from course specific groups to sports to Circus Hallam and Tea Society. If you think something has the potential to be a society, then it probably already is. Your course is a huge part of your university life and is after all the main reason why you’re at university. Getting used to the workload and teaching style can sometimes take a bit to settle into, but you will eventually. If things aren’t going as planned and you realise the course isn’t right for you, it isn’t the end of the world. There are tutors that you can talk to and discuss your worries with. This is exactly what I did half way through my first year

and I haven’t looked back since I changed courses. University is about enjoying yourself and loving your course, especially as you’re studying it for at least three years. Thankfully, it’s not all work as the nightlife in Sheffield is amazing, covering all things from nights out to the theatre and music. Tudor Square in the City Centre holds the largest concentration of theatres in the UK outside of London, City Hall regularly holds top comedy gigs with people like Russell Brand and Noel Fielding, and The Leadmill, Plug, Motorpoint Arena and The O2 Academy are great places to listen to some live music. When it comes to a great night out, there are countless amounts of bars and clubs to take your fancy. You could go to your union and enjoy a night out there or venture into the city centre. Most clubs hold different nights that will become all too familiar to you, like Wednesday’s ‘Skwl Disco’ at Corporation, Friday’s ‘Propaganda’ at Plug and Saturday’s ‘Student Saturdays’ at Replica. Even though there is so much going on in Sheffield, remember to keep an eye on your budget. Putting things like your rent, bill and travel payments first is a wise idea. If you’re struggling financially, then the universities both have financial advice services that will help you with whatever problems you might face. Being a student in Sheffield will be the best experience of your life. You will meet some amazing people, learn more about your area of study and experience new things. The first year at university goes faster than you think, so make sure you enjoy every moment and take every opportunity that is thrown at you. Good luck!

music

Concrete Love by the Courteeners Liam Fray, frontman to the Courteeners, and the word ‘modest’ rarely go in the same sentence together. From when the band initially swaggered into the public eye in 2007, it was the demeanour of Fray that shot to fame rather than their sound. In 2012, he told NME that he and his band are “the best band on the planet right now”. And heck, if Manchester God of cynicism and singer/songwriter of the Smiths Morrissey can sing their praises, maybe Fray’s right. From the Gallagher brothers to Shaun Ryder, the frontmen of Manchester bands typically aren’t short of confidence. Although perhaps a decade or two late on the ‘MADchester’ scene, the Courteeners are no exception. That said, with the pending release of new album Concrete Love, we can accept that frontman of the Courteeners, Liam Fray, has mellowed over the past couple of years. He recently laughed in an interview, as he acknowledged the fact that he has “less of a chip on his shoulder” now than when he wrote earlier tracks such as ‘You’re Not Nineteen Forever’. Concrete Love definitely reflects this, both through Fray’s lyrics and the much more polished sound of the band’s fourth album. It becomes clear that it’s not just the mod cut hairdo that Fray’s ditched since the band’s early days. Gone are the days where their songs were dominated by intermittent, roughly recorded riffs; the album as a whole sounds much more solid than in the days of their debut album, St. Jude. The guitars, even when playing in a heavier rock style, are less erratic and have (mostly) moved away from the noughties Indie, Inbetweeners-soundtrack vibe. Romanticism is rife in the aptly named Concrete Love. It’s difficult to not melt as Fray smoulders “I’d rather wrap my arms around her/Feel the bones in her spine” in the album’s most memorable track, ‘Small Bones’. The use of trumpets here hint to the development for the Courteeners; there’s so much more available in this album than the raucous riffs that got them famous. It’s no secret that the Courteeners are Manchester 52 | Stu-Mag

born and bred – a great deal of their influences stem from bands crucial in making the MADchester scene what it was. From song titles such as ‘Fallowfield Hillbilly’ that sounded uncomfortably similar to the Smiths’ ‘Rusholme Ruffians’ to the mock Liam Gallagher haircut, Fray and co. are certainly proud of their roots. However, Concrete Love definitely sees progression away from the ‘Oasis-ism’ of their sound; they’re moving in a similar direction to the Arctic Monkeys in the way that they they’re almost ditching their regionalism. Yes, it means that they’re achieving a more finely tuned sound, but you can’t help from think it’s kind of a shame. Fray takes a leaf out of Alex Turner’s book, murmuring promises away from a bleak life; “We’ll get hotel/And sleep until they knock/

sounds of Concrete Love. Tracks like ‘Black & Blue’ and ‘Saboteur’ still possess a bit of their old, heavier rock ‘n’ roll influence, but on a whole the album, whilst in parts beautiful, just doesn’t seem as exciting as their older stuff. They’re probably more talented now than when they started out in 2007, but Concrete Love lacks that lust for life that bands like the Happy Mondays celebrated throughout Manchester. It feels as though fans of the Courteeners will be anticipating the return of Liam’s chip on his shoulder.

Words: Chloe Bolton Out now.

Hudson Taylor

Let them break the door down” whispered in a gruff voice has knocked the generic style of Indie songs out of the water. Something’s haven’t changed, though. Fray prides himself on his “close to the bone” nature of his lyrics. There’s a great element of realism in their songs, with new tracks like ‘Has He Told You That He Loves You Yet?’ depicting a green-eyed Liam uttering “He won’t hold your hand/And he can’t hold his liquor”. There’s something really human about Fray; even if he doesn’t believe it himself. He coos “I’ll take a picture and you won’t want me to” in ‘Beautiful Head’, showing that he’s lived real loves and knows exactly how to transfer that passion into poetry. The Courteeners have, dare I say it, grown up, by the

Hudson Taylor, an up and coming folk duo blurring the lines between folk and pop whom produce compelling singles that steam the charts in both Ireland and England. They have returned to Sheffield for their Coffee House tour, and they are welcomed with open arms. The mixture of Simon and Garfunkel and Crosby are what sets them apart from other artists in the charts, as a production of their musical upbringing they cleverly infuse the contrasting genres. Their influences stem from their parents record collection and their older siblings, this is what makes the duo original and down to earth. Audiences respond to the simplicity of the single guitar and acoustic vocals, as shown at the Coffee House gig in Sheffield. The band single-handily filled the Sheffield University Student Union to bursting with people eager to get a glimpse of their live show. Alfie and Harry were unsuspecting of their popularity in Sheffield which made it all the more special. They ranged from spirited performances of the single ‘Battles’ to acoustic versions of Nirvana’s ‘Come as you are’ as they moved away from the microphones and into the crowd. They presented versatility whilst showcasing previous singles and what can be expected from their album which will be released later on in the year. The future looks bright for the Irish duo, who played all of the big festivals this summer, including Glastonbury and Reading/Leeds. You can follow their success on Spotify and ITunes, as they continue to fill venues and surprise audiences across the country.

Gaming Watch Dogs

Games reviewed by the student mag’s resident web designer Gary Thirtle.

Geometry Dash

8/ 0 1

9/ 10 Available on PC / PS4 / Xbox One

Available on Android / Iphone / Ipad

Set in Chicago, where a central network of computers connects everyone and everything, Watch Dogs explores the impact of technology within our society. Using the city as your weapon, you will embark on a personal mission to inflict your own brand of justice. Chicago’s overarching network is known as the Central Operating System (ctOS), and it controls almost all of the city’s technology and information - including key data on all of the city’s residents. You play as Aiden Pearce, a brilliant hacker and former thug, whose criminal past led to a violent family tragedy. While seeking justice for those events, you’ll monitor and hack those around you by manipulating the ctOS from the palm of your hand. You’ll access omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control traffic lights and public transportation to stop the enemy... and more. The game is comparable to a future looking Assassins Creed with lots of items you can interact with, and a fantastic storyline throwing twists and turns at every opportunity. After getting into the storyline the game entices you so be prepared for long gaming periods where you feel you can’t leave the game as you need to know what happens next - as an avid gamer myself it has been a long time since I’ve felt this way about a game. Due to the minimum spec I would recommend purchasing the game for PS4 or Xbox One - unless you have a high spec gaming PC . I would give it a solid 9/10 as the story takes around 15-20 hours to complete, not to mention side missions and online gameplay. Defiantly worth a buy!

What can I say about this game? Jump and fly your way through danger in this rythm-based action platformer! There are free version for Android and costing just £1.49 on the iPhone this game is a great time killer, along the same values of Flappy Bird this game with enthral you and make you hate it at the same time. Gameplay is simple: tap to jump, or tap and hold to jump repeatedly. A few environmental objects such as glowing disks that make mid-air leaps possible are thrown into the mix, but all the player has to worry about is timing everything. Of course that’s a lot tougher than it sounds. Each level is packed with obstacles to avoid, and touching anything that isn’t solid ground or one of the few special interactive elements means instant death. Fail and it’s back to the beginning of the level. Succeed and earn copious amounts of bragging rights. Plus every time a stage is beaten for the first time it unlocks a new character icon players can use to customize their runner. Getting through the first level is a challenge in itself, taking me about 15 or so minutes with about 90 deaths. This game will make the time fly by if you’re on a long commute or just bored and want to kill some time. I would give this game a 8/10 as it could do with some improving as the music starts to get a bit tedious after a while and you may feel like throwing your phone at a wall after dying for the millionth time.

The open-plan, spacious salon has a comfortable, relaxed European feel – incorporating an eclectic mix of modern and antique pieces. Owner Tim tells Student Mag: “I wanted the salon to have a homefrom-home feel and hopefully I’ve achieved this. I’m from an Italian family so I was keen to incorporate Italian style.” The building was formally an antiques store – boasting glass windows from floor to ceiling with views across Endcliffe Park. “As soon as the unit became available I had to have it” said Tim. “I’d regularly walk by and think ‘wow, this would make a really good salon’, the lighting is perfect!” Owner Tim is also the style director at the salon alongside senior stylist Leanne and assistant stylist James. The team focus on quality cuts and colours for both men and women. “We will only ever work on one client at a time; we’ll never rush an appointment and will always offer each individual a bespoke service” added Tim, who has more than 12 years’ experience in the industry. The team consists of a style director, owner Glynn, and a senior stylist and stylist offering cuts and blows, semi-permanent or permanent colours, gents and kids, bridal and take-up. I booked in for a cut and blow with Danielle – the latest stylist to join the team. Using the volumising shampoo, I had a big and bouncy blow dry but a more sleek finish can be created on request.

Owner Amanda offers a free Dermalogica skinmapping consultation for those new to Dermalogica products and treatments. Newly opened fitness venue, The Gym, offers membership for less than 39p per day – ideal for students who want to keep in shape, but without the unwanted expense. Open 24 hours a day, The Gym is one of the most convenient chains in England and now, Sheffield. With almost 50 established venues across including Leeds and Manchester, it became clear Sheffield needed to get in on this scheme, so in August this year they opened up a new venue just outside of the city centre near Kelham Island.

Workout on a student budget

At the moment they are offering an especially good value pre-introductory rate of £10.99 per month which works out as less than 39p per day. They also have their own ‘Loyalty Promise’ which means that for as long as you are a member, your gym membership will never increase, and they don’t do contracts they don’t believe in them – so you are completely entitled to freeze or cancel your membership whenever you want, no hassle or fuss. Parking is free for all members (up to three hours) so if you need to drive to the location it won’t add on any extra costs. If you’re traveling by tram, the Shalesmoor stop is just a five minute walk away.

The Gym Sheffield Units J&K Brookshaw Park Gibraltar Street Sheffield, S3 8RW.

62 | Stu-Mag

If you still aren’t sure this is the gym for you, you can even do a trial run. You can buy a £5 day membership to test out the machines and see if you like it. If you do want to join, it’s very simple! Just go to www.thegymgroup.com and follow the steps, just a few clicks and you’re away. You can even choose to delay your start date for whenever is most convenient for you. Words: Jessica Fogarty

So how did I meet Drake? You may be wondering. Well I said I would start at the end and go back to the beginning, so back to the beginning I’ll go. It was a sunny Saturday afternoon, the first time in a long time that I had had time for myself, so I decided to indulge in some retail therapy.I ran my own business, a property developing company, so I was fortunate enough to be able to treat myself to luxury items whenever I wanted. Today I was looking for bags, for a woman can never have too many handbags. I made a beeline for Selfridges and headed downstairs to the luxury handbags section. My eyes were immediately drawn to a pale pink quilted Chanel handbag, it was stunning. ‘A beautiful bag for a beautiful lady.’ a voice behind me said, making me jump. I turned to see who it belonged to and gasped. The man was beautiful. He was the most striking person I had ever laid eyes on. He had dark curly hair that was slicked back and he was wearing an extremely well fitted three piece suit. He had a set of dazzling white teeth and a pair of the most mesmerising emerald eyes. He laughed softly, ‘you look surprised, I’m sorry, let me introduce myself, I am Drake Reynolds.’ He took my hand and bowed his head, kissing it gently. As soon as his lips touched my hand I flinched, his touch was electric. ‘Did you feel that?’ He said, looking up at me. I looked around the department store to see if anyone was watching, but it was deserted. I nodded. ‘What’s your name? I need to know your name.’ He said, his piercing eyes searching mine. ‘Gisele,’ I said, the name I gave every man I met. A smile played on his lips, ‘ I’ve waited a long time to meet you Gisele.’ For some reason, I didn’t find his comment strange, if anything I think I understood what he meant. I didn’t believe in love at first sight, but there was definitely

66 | Stu-Mag

something at first sight here. Neither of us could ignore it. He inched closer to me, I held my breath. I could see the hairs on his neck standing on end as he came closer, I could feel his warm breath on my face, ‘Gisele,’ my name escaping his mouth like a moan. He pulled me into him and I fell into his grasp, like a moth to a flame, I couldn’t stop myself. Here I was, in the middle of an empty department store embracing a complete stranger on a Saturday afternoon. His arms immediately closed around me tightly, holding me, claiming me. I had never experienced anything like it. I breathed in his scent, relishing the feel of his strong, muscular arms around my petite frame. ‘Come with me,’ he whispered into my hair, sending shivers through my entire body. ‘Where?’ ‘Just come with me,’ he pulled away from me, held me at arm’s length, waiting. ‘OK.’ He took my hand, lazing his fingers through mine and started leading me out of Selfridges. He paused as soon as we were outside looking up and down the street. Suddenly I felt stupid. Did he regret it? Was this some kind of joke? Out of nowhere, a black Bentley Continental pulled to a stop right in front of us. Drake let go of my hand and opened the passenger door to the car, ‘after you,’ he said. I stepped inside the car, not able to hide the look of complete surprise on my face, he followed me in seconds later. ‘Where to?’ A driver also in a three piece suit and top hat asked. ‘To the mansion please Michael.’ He leaned back in his seat to wrap his arms around my waist, a sharp thrill running through my body when he did. What exactly was I letting myself in for? Mrs X

hilst your parents will be missed in their absence of doing your washing and changing your bed sheets, perhaps their constant nagging and rule-making won’t be. Ignorance is bliss; if they don’t know what you’re getting up to, they can’t moan. Many students may not have had much exposure to drugs before, purely because it’s not something you typically encounter when living under the same roof as your mum and dad. But when you move into a big, vibrant city with a massive underground warehouse scene (like Sheffield), you’re sure to have your fair share of run-ins with drugs in one way or another. Drugs advice service FRANK urges on its website that young adults should “work out where [they] stand on drugs. Knowing your own mind makes it easier to stay true to yourself ”. Curiosity is natural, and experimentation is also pretty common. But if you’re not totally confident in your desire to use a new substance, the chances are it won’t end well - entering intoxication with anxiety or feelings of worry will just multiply those feelings. “Don’t feel like you have to change your mind,” FRANK’s advice page reads. People harp on about ‘peer pressure’ an awful lot when discussing drugs, but for good reason. You’ll cross paths with people during your time at uni who will swear by using recreational drugs; the world won’t come to an abrupt end if you have a different view on the consumption of drugs than them. You don’t owe them anything. Your own comfort is priority. If, however, using illegal substances is something you’ve already dabbled in, remember the importance of respecting your peers. I’ve never understood how ‘hot-boxing’ your student Halls and leaving your flat reeking of marijuana gets so many laughs. You’re not the only person who has to live in that environment. Plus, whilst offering your new flatmate a line may

seem like the most generous thing you’ve ever done, you’ve probably forgotten the thoughts of worry going through their head. “If I don’t do it, they’ll think I’m a loser” they fear: an irrational, but increasingly common, thought. There are so many popular taboos surrounding numerous drugs. As stated by the Office of National Statistics, an average of 24.6 people were killed in relation to ecstasy consumption per year in between the years 2008 – 2012, which in comparison to other substances that share the Class A categorisation is actually surprisingly low. If ecstasy has such a comparatively low fatality rate, why is it regarded as one of the most dangerous drugs? The discussion about legalising marijuana has also been exhausted; several studies highlighting the pros of using the plant (e.g. medicinal purposes), yet we are still warned against it. Surely we should make up our own minds? In order to come to your own (sensible) conclusion, it’d be wise to do some research about substance abuse. There’s so much information available online, where you’ll also be able to read what other people who have actually used drugs have to say. Information straight from the horse’s mouth is usually the most useful. FRANK’s website tells us we should “get the facts straight”; something which I believe would help new students come to a decent, well-considered stance on drugs. If you’re worried about drugs, or someone who has been taking them, call FRANK on 0300 123 6600 – available to give friendly and confidential advice 24/7.

STU-MAG puts the spotlight on Sheffield student, Ella Woodhouse

NAME: ELLA WOODHOUSE AGE: 22 OCCUPATION: FASHION STUDENT LOCATION: SHEFFIELD When did you first discover an interest in fashion? My first memory is sewing my own PE kit, age nine. My mum and dad used to sew and make leather jackets when they were younger so I grew up in a house full of sewing materials. By my early teens I was using their machine to make purses, bags and putting my own stamp on clothing I’d buy. I would literally make a change to everything to make it unique. What made you want to specialise in menswear tailoring? Initially I only made things that I wanted to wear – pieces that the High Street shops couldn’t offer me. But I soon began to realise, it wasn’t all about me. I looked for a gap in the market – something that would make me stand out from the crowd and I decided on menswear tailoring. Is it unusual to find a female tailor? There are an increasing number of women moving in to tailoring. I did worry it would be frowned upon but times have changed. If a women enjoys it, why not? 70 | Stu-Mag

How would you describe your style of work? Classic tailoring with a youthful, fresh approach. There’s something unique incorporated in to each suit I make. What is your specialist area? I love cutting and hand-sewing. That’s what you’ll usually find me doing when I’m at home. Your final fashion collection at university was based on Sheffield and the Steel Works. Tell us more? Yes, I studied at Manchester School of Art but I wanted my final project to reflect my roots. I did a lot of research in to the history of Sheffield; specifically Kelham Island as well as looking through my Granddad’s photos from the 50s and 60s. The collection reflected the work wear worn by those in the Steel City industries – tailoring made to last. I had buttons made by The Famous Sheffield Shop on Ecclesall Road which were branded #MadeInSheffield and #TheSteelCity. The response was really good. How was hosting the fashion show for your final collection? I was so nervous. A team of professional models were brought in to wear each student’s collection though so they really showed off the pieces the best they could. At the end of the show, each designer was revealed – that was definitely the worst part for me as I’m so used to being behind the scenes not on the catwalk. Have you sold any of your creations yet? No, but surprisingly I have had a lot of demand. I’ve made two suits for my Dad and one for my boyfriend though. They love them. I spend so much time and effort perfecting them, it’s hard to give them away or put a price on them but I’ll have to start selling them soon to make room in the house and make a career from this. How long does it take you to make a suit? It takes me about three weeks to create a bespoke suit. A jacket takes about 50 hours but the trousers are quicker to do. Which tailoring houses do you take most inspiration from?

I want to launch my own label and bring a taste of Savile Row to Sheffield

Hugo Boss and Burberry are two of my favourites. They tailor in shop. Do you have much competition in Sheffield? Some, but not a lot compared to the capital. Ted Williams on London Road is probably the best known menswear store in Sheffield. Now you’ve graduated, what’s next for you? I’m hoping to under-go an apprenticeship on Savile Row in London. I spent a couple of days there last year and I’d love to go back for a longer internship. They have the most amazing tailoring houses – if you look through the basement windows you’ll see the tailors hard at work. Eventually I want to launch my own label and bring a taste of Savile Row to Sheffield. Words: Jessica Fogarty Stu-Mag | 71

Sheffield

Jessica Fogarty

Chloe Bolton

Elliot Reynolds, 20

Joe Mills, 21

you me at six

Room to Breath

自從2007年發佈了處女專輯《Save It For The Bedroom》,樂隊 You Me At Six這一路都在成長。 看來You Me At Six的新專輯又將有一首單曲打入前40名的排行榜, 那就是9月1日剛發佈的第四張專輯《Cavalier Youth》收錄的單 曲“Room To Breath”。

Dignam不僅今 年7月份在Sheffield舉辦名為“Sing With Me”的表演,還與Lewis Watson、Lawson、Gabrielle Aplin 和 5 Seconds of Summer 等樂 隊共同在英國、澳大利亞巡迴演唱。

。 。 作者:Joss Woodend

15 | Stu-Mag

從單曲《Open Your Heart》中可以看到傑克遜五 人組(The Jackson 5)經典《I want you back》 的影子,又或者與黑人靈歌大師Smokey Robinson 的《Tears of a Clown》似曾相識。

開玩笑啦,不 過“Something in your mouth”實在是太 牛了。

。OUTKAST!

TH E LAF ONT AI NE S
