Jamal Edwards FROM TEENAGE AMATEUR FILM MAKER TO 23-YEAR-OLD MULTI-MILLIONAIRE... Words: Jessica Fogarty He’s the West London teenager who has caught the eye of politicians, business leaders and even royalty. Founder of youth broadcasting channel, SB.TV, Jamal Edwards has quickly become a self-made multi-millionaire, being named on the Sunday Times young power and rich lists. He’s interviewed Prime Minister David Cameron; joined Prince

William and Harry for the first royal selfie at the launch of the Queen’s Young Leaders Programme; and, as a winner of the Virgin Media Pioneers competition for the best and most innovative entrepreneurs in the UK, counts Sir Richard Branson as a friend. Not bad to say he’s still only 23 years old, is it?! Chic meets Jamal Edwards when he stops off at the annual Sheffield business festival, MADE 2014.
Take us back to the start. Where did your journey begin? I have my mum to thank for my success I suppose – she bought me my first video camera for Christmas when I was 15 years old. I started filming foxes and bugs and uploading them to YouTube. Unexpectedly, they got thousands of views. I carried on filming wildlife for a while but I soon realised I couldn’t do that forever, in the back garden of the council house I lived at in West London. I had a lot of mates that were MC’s so I started filming them. I was frustrated with the platform available to showcase talent so I set out to do something about it. YouTube had only been launched 12 months when I started out eight years ago so it wasn’t being utilised the way it is today. I soon realised the opportunities were endless – I could film music, fashion, comedy and businesses etc. This was the start and SB.TV was born.
Stu-Mag | 9
10 | Stu-Mag
What motivates you? Trying to find new talent. In 2010 I filmed my first video outside of the grime and rap scene. I was fascinated by this singingbeatboxing-ginger – Ed Sheeran. He’s so unexpected. Finding more people like Ed is what’s going to move my business forward.
What has been the most surreal moment of your career? I got a job in Topman to fund my film projects when I first started out, and now eight years on, I’ve just launched my own range of hats in the store. It’s really surreal that I’ve come full circle – I was selling their stock and now they’re buying from me.
Tell us about your latest project, BITE TV? A promo advert has been released and Bite TV will be officially launching soon. I felt like news wasn’t being delivered in a way that young people could understand, so this is a new platform for youth broadcasting. Subjects like drugs and homophobia aren’t being addressed in the right way – in a way that young people understand. BITE is not a news channel as you know it. It’s something new and much needed to improve young people’s understanding of current affairs.
Who are your business heroes? I’m inspired by Richard Branson and Dr Dre. I’ve met both of them. They’ve help to fuel my dreams.
What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs wanting to launch their own company? Find your niche. You need to create a solution to a problem that hasn’t been solved yet. Then don’t give up. It’s also beneficial to find a mentor and you need to be prepared for knock-backs. You have to be dedicated too – it’s a lot of stress and you won’t have much spare time.
What has been your biggest business challenge? Working with the tax man. It’s so important to take the time out to manage your finances. You aren’t taught about this at school but everyone should be. Anyone thinking of going into business should do their research before they set-up.

Michelle Mone Words : Jessica F ogarty
14 | Stu-Mag
Founder of international lingerie brand, Ultimo, Michelle Mone is one of the UK’s most successful female entrepreneurs. The award-winning ‘Bra Queen’, who has built her success on determination, self-belief and hard work, has been voted as Britain’s Number One most powerful woman in business by Glamour magazine as well as receiving an OBE from The Queen in recognition of her services to UK business. The Student Mag catches up with the leading lady when she stops off in Sheffield for MADE 2014… Was being an entrepreneur always your life ambition? Yes but I don’t know how it happened. I grew up in the East End of Glasgow and I left school with no qualifications, but somehow I became the founder of one of the UK’s biggest lingerie brands. I’m a born leader though – at ten years old, I got my first job doing a paper round. By age 11 I had 17 teenagers working for me and I’d pay them a wage but I’d make a profit on each round. Soon after I got a job in a shoe shop, then I took a job at a sweet shop for 15p extra per hour. I just wanted to make as much money as possible. When did the dream of becoming a successful entrepreneur become a reality? At school I was told “there’s no way you’ll be able to do it because you’re dyslexic”, but I’m a big believer that if you have a can-do attitude, you can achieve anything. My mum once said to me “Think big and big things will happen” – it’s a motto I stick to in life. I was married at 18 and I had my first baby at 19 – that’s when I knew it was time to get a real job, to set an example to my kids. One night at a friend’s dinner party, I was sat at the table feeling so uncomfortable in my bra and that was when the idea came to me – I would create a good fitting bra that balanced comfort with cleavage. Everyone doubted me but I was determined. “What do you know about bras” they asked me. My reply was: “I have a pair of tits”. I got in £480k debt but I knew my brand would be big. I tested my inventions on my flat chested family members – my Auntie Joan was so flat we called

her Uncle Joan, but she had a cleavage up to her neck with my bra. The next big step was to impress the retailers. I took my bra to Selfridges buying office in London and forced their head buyer to try it on. After some persuasion she did, and she loved it. They bought six months’ worth of stock and it sold out in six hours. They’d not seen sales like that since the launch of Furbies one Christmas.
using them. I should have trusted my instinct because some time after they stole 1.8 million from me and ten months’ worth of stock. I lost everything and hit a low point in life. But after a long hard struggle to get investment from the bank, I came back fighting. I got support from HSBC and launched 15 new bra inventions including the lowest-back-bra, a backless and a frontless.
What have been your biggest career challenges? I scan people when I meet them and put a barcode on their back-sides, so to speak. When I met my distributors there was something about them that made me uneasy but my husband talked me in to
How did you cope, being catapulted in to the media spotlight? I’ve been told I always come across confident when I’m speaking in front of the cameras or at a public conference but it’s all an act. I throw-up before every

good example of this is using celebrity brand ambassadors. I made good friends with Rod Stewart following my time spent at business parties and I made his new girlfriend at the time, Penny Lancaster, the face of Ultimo for a campaign shoot. We had a wee fallout shortly after and quite controversially I signed his exwife Rachel Hunter as her replacement. It was a genius PR stunt that grabbed £1 billion in media coverage. Business is business. How has Ultimo changed you as a person? I’m a much stronger person following everything I’ve been through. As well as financial issues, I’ve faced a lot of personal challenges during my career. My husband had an affair with my designer and for some unknown reason, he had a one per cent higher share in the business than me. He tried to fire me and take over my company but I fought and fought until I retained ownership. It was an emotional rollercoaster – I’d been with this man since I was 17 years old. I also put on 8st running Ultimo – I went from a size 10 to size 22. I was eating six meals per day and hiding cakes to snack on. I couldn’t even wear my own designs of pants because I was too big. It was thanks to Rachel Hunter that I lost 8st1lb – she told me to treat my body like a business – and it worked. I ran for seven miles every day until I felt confident enough to do my own Ultimo photo shoot. I wanted to inspire other women and show them how you can get back your confidence.
speech. I’ve had ups and downs with the media. I got £54 million in press coverage for the launch of Ultimo – through just one campaign – so I have a lot to thank them for. I’ve also had some great TV opportunities – I took part in 71 Degrees North which was the best experience – and Celebrity Masterchef where I made it to the final. You must have some big decisions to make, singlehandedly? You have to constantly think ahead or competitors will creep up on you. PR stunts help to gain media attention that will keep you in the spotlight. A
From your experience in business, what advice would you offer budding entrepreneurs? One: Innovation is key – you need that point of difference. Two: Work the hardest you can work and play the hardest you can play. Three: Always try to give something back. I raised £700k in one night recently at our biggest ever catwalk show and donated all of the money to charity. It’s been a whirlwind journey. What’s next for you? I don’t plan to slow down yet. I’ve launched my own brand of fake tan and we’re opening 12 stores in the next four months. I plan to take the brand around the world.

L EVI • ROOT S
Student Mag meets music man and food revolutionary, Levi Roots.
How would you describe yourself ? I’m the Rasta man who goes around telling people to make something of themselves. Who inspires you? Bob Marley and my Nan. She taught me everything I know about food. Where did the idea come from for your Reggae Reggae sauce? I knew there was a niche for Caribbean food served in the UK. My Nan taught me an amazing relish recipe but I thought it would taste better in liquid form – so I created a sauce and wrote a song about it – “it’s so nice I had to name it twice”. I travelled to every food market in London with my guitar and sauce in hand. Did you ever imagine the sauce would become world famous? I always aspired to outsell Tomato Ketchup. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Going on Dragon’s Den. My kids begged me not to go on the show, but I ignored them. They were worried I would embarrass them. I remember being stood there singing my song thinking “shit, I wonder if they like me”, then glancing up and seeing the short rich Australian guy doing what I like to call a white man’s jig – some sort of un-rhythmic dance move. That’s when I thought “Phew, they like me”. I finger-picked my way into the Dragon’s hearts and won £50,000 investment from Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh. How has the Reggae Reggae sauce brand
developed? It’s come a long way – the brand is now worth over £60 million and we offer more than 50 products. Not bad to say I left school in Jamaica age 11 not even able to spell my own name. We’re launching in restaurants soon too – including Sheffield, so watch out! Tell us a random fact about you? My birth name is Keith but I definitely don’t look like a Keith. It suits a white Scottish man not a big black Jamaican man with dreadlocks. I came up with the name of Levi Roots because it suits me. What’s next for you? I’ve got some new music in the pipeline. I’ve been singing that damn Reggae Reggae sauce song for seven years now man. My new music goes back to my roots – the style of music I performed pre ReggaeReggae. I’ll be releasing a new album as well as two upcoming singles. What’s your secret to success? I’ve built my empire by just being me. Usually when you see a black man on screen, he’s either kicking a ball or running fast. If you want to do something, do it but keep your feet firmly on the ground. I’m still silly old Levi – I don’t say anything or do anything differently. I still live where I’ve always lived and talk to the same people. I have all the things around me that inspired me at the start. What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs? Hard work is what makes cash.

state champs. the acoustic things ep. Hailed as the finest debut pop punk record in recent memory, State Champs burst onto the scene with their 2013 album ‘The Finer Things’ and received rave reviews from all over. The New York fivepiece are back with a follow up EP that treats fans to a stripped-down, more personal sound featuring acoustic re-workings of five tracks from ‘The Finer Things’ as well as two brand new tracks. Frontman Derek Discanio’s voice is an instrument in its own right as he showcases his range on the first track, ‘Elevated’. He muses on crumbling relationships and words left unsaid, revealing the
vulnerability in his voice before launching into a gravelly roar for the chorus. With the guitars unplugged, the band have turned to delicate piano arrangements and vocal harmonies - the end product is a soft, mature sound. State Champs have not, however, abandoned the energetic, punchy hooks that made their last album so successful. Instead, they slow down catchy fan-favourites like ‘Deadly Conversation’ and ‘Simple Existence’, letting each layer build to a crescendo before Discanio’s belting voice brings the track home. The two brand new songs, ‘Leave

You in the Dark’ and ‘If I’m Lucky’, benefit from the extra time that the band have had to grow since the release of ‘The Finer Things’. If there is one criticism to be made from listening to ‘The Acoustic Things’, it is that the five older tracks rely too heavily on clumsy and clichéd lyricism – but it is encouraging to see growth in the two final tracks. ‘Leave You in the Dark’ is a beautifully constructed song that displays the band’s ability to stray from the pop punk formula with deft guitar picking and subtle synth arrangements. A year on from their last musical output, State Champs look to be on course to win over plenty of new fans.

THE VAMPS. GIG REVIEW. They’re set to become the next big British boy band to take the industry by storm. But what sets this fresh-faced-foursome apart from the competition? Their hearty guitar-pop and youthful lyrics has caught the attention of hundreds of thousands of teenage girls across the world. In fact, just two years after the launch of the band, the boys have already embarked on their first UK tour, kicking off in our very own Sheffield City Hall. The venue was packed with screaming teens, and the noise was near to deafening as they walked out on stage. Opening with
Wild Heart – one of the band’s first singles which they originally released on their YouTube channel – the audience were up on their feet dancing and singing from the word go. The Vamps formed after the band members found one another via their respective YouTube channels. Guitarist James McVey, 21, approached singer Bradley Simpson, 20, and the pair began writing songs together. They tracked down Tristan Evans, 21, after watching the audition tape which helped him make the final of a national competition for aspiring drummers in 2010, and bassist Connor Ball, 19, joined later in the year. The band have a lot to thank their
fans for, and they made an effort throughout the show to connect with the audience by introducing themselves individually and sharing their stories of what it’s like to be a part of The Vamps. Each member showcased their individual talents and personalities including a rock star moment from drummer Tristan Evans who performed an impressive drum solo. Being a boy band sceptic, personally I was shocked at the talent each member of The Vamps possesses. They all perform vocals and play various instruments. At one point the lead vocalist, Brad Simpson performed a word perfect vocal whilst playing the drums. With their new single, Oh Cecilia, rising up the charts and a triple win at the BBC Radio One Teen awards in October, The Vamps are set to stay on the path of success.

rise against. After 15 years in the industry together with six albums under the belt, the punk rock foursome hailing from Chicago, Illinois, are coming to Sheffield on 3rd November 2014. Largely known for their advocacy of progressive organisations such as Amnesty International, PETA, and It Gets Better Project, these guys know where they stand morally and politically. It is this firm knowledge of who they are that has enabled them to generate album sales of over four million across their last four releases, turning them into one of the most respected and revered punk rock bands on the planet. These guys have come a long way since their formation in 1999 under the name Transistor Revolt 26 | Stu-Mag

and now they have the chance to wow the audience of the O2 Academy. Critics describe their sound as melodic hardcore, punk rock and hardcore punk. However, their newest album The Black Market shows that they are more than just any other hardcore/ punk band in their ability to create songs that are both catchy and are meaningful. The guys are sure to play some of their older crowd pleasing classics like Prayer of the Refugee, Re-Education (Through Labour) and Saviour but also be ready to be wowed by some new material from their latest album. Standout tracks include Tragedy & Time¸ and Beautiful Indifference that show some great melodic guitar riffs as well as their aggressive, in your face sound that they are known for.

Enter Shikari. The new highly anticipated album from Enter Shikari - The Mindsweep - is set for release in January 2015. It’s been three long years in the making, but those three years will probably feel substantially shorter for Rou, Rory, Rob and Chris, as their band have been on a whirlwind world tour that has seen them play 153 shows in 27 countries, as well as many festival slots. Whilst their last album, ‘A Flash Flood of Colour’, was a highly politicised call-to-arms aimed at combatting the apathy endemic in the youth of modern Britain, so far the band have been tightlipped about the new album’s theme. Lead singer Rou Reynolds has, however, given fans a sneak preview of the musical direction that the band have taken: “We pushed ourselves vocally with some of the rawest, angriest vocals we’ve ever done as well as some of the most dulcet and delicate. It’s even more diverse than normal as we’ve built more confidence and fearlessness to widen our influences further. Melody and aggression will always be an important side of what we do, but with this album there was also a concerted effort to concentrate on texture too. Alongside the core of our guitar, bass, drums, electronics
set-up, there’s so much new instrumentation and orchestration. Writing for and recording woodwind, brass and strings was so rewarding and really felt like it brought a new dimension to the music.” It will come as no surprise to fans that Enter Shikari are trying out new styles in search of an evolved sound. Ever since their 2007 debut - the Gold certified ‘Take to the Skies’ - the band have experimented with a range of instrumentation and genres including post-hardcore, metalcore, dubstep and trance. With the inclusion of typically orchestral instruments, we can expect a
grandiose epic of an album from a band who have rarely disappointed in either musical output or work ethic. The band have announced a European and UK tour that will kick off in January, reaching British shores on 16th February in Portsmouth. Unfortunately the band are yet to set a date in Sheffield, but you can catch them in Cardiff, Wolverhampton, Manchester, Glasgow, Middlesbrough, Cambridge, Norwich or London. Tickets and pre-orders are available from the band’s website now. www.entershikari.com

Girl Online
By Zoe Sugg AKA Zoella. out 25th Nov. The stunning debut romance novel by 24 year old Brighton blogging sensation Zoella. You may recognise the name if you are into fashion, lifestyle and beauty blogging and now she is showing us her other talents in a novel about…a blogger! Protagonist Penny writes about boys, school dramas, her mad family and being whisked away to New York, where she meets the gorgeous guitar playing Noah. Every moment of her falling for Noah is captured in her blog, however, Noah has a secret with the potential to be disastrous and blow Penny’s cover and ruin one of her closest friendships.
Yes Please
by Amy Poehler. out 6th Nov. This is Poehler’s highly anticipated first book and within, she offers up a plethora of juicy personal stories, funny bits on sex, love, friendship and parenthood as well as some real life advice (arguable as to how useful this advice may be!). Not your traditional story with a beginning, middle and end. Amy offers a selection of
ideas, essays, anecdotes, lists and poetry to express the charming and charismatic personality that made her one of the favourites on American TV show Saturday Night Live.
Foxglove Summer by Ben Aaronovitch. out 11th Nov.
The fifth book in the Peter Grant series. Grant is a cop, magical apprentice, and a Londoner to the core. He is forced out into the countryside village of Herefordshire to solve a case concerning the disappearance of children which appears to involve a supernatural element. Grant soon finds himself deep in this mysterious case, having to deal with locals who are not attuned to his London way of doing things and reluctant to admit that anything supernatural may have anything to do with the case. Grant proves that whilst you can take the copper out of London, you can’t take the London out of the copper.
Revival
by Stephen King. out 11th Nov. A dark and electrifying novel about addiction, fanaticism, and what might exist on the other side of life. Set in the early 60s in a small New England town, a young boy, Jamie Morton
meets Charles Jacobs and they soon forge a deep bond based on their shared fascination with electrical experiments. The novel spans five decades and explores their changing situations and relationships. Jamie becomes an addict whilst Charles is a successful showman on stage and their bond becomes something that goes beyond even the Devil’s devising. Written in the great American tradition of Edgar Allen Poe, Frank Norris and Nathaniel Hawthorne, Jamie discovers that revival has many meanings…
The Moral Case For Fossil Fuels by Alex Epstein. out 13th Nov.
Myth: Fossil fuels are hurting the developing world. Truth: Fossil fuels are the key to improving the quality of life for billions of people in the developing world. If we withhold them, access to clean water plummets, and life expectancy drops significantly. Fossil fuels are easy to misunderstand and demonise… Could everything we know about fossil fuels be wrong? Epstein highlights the faults of the arguments we have been taught to believe unquestionably. Using cutting edge research, Epstein foregrounds this point of view to support his notion that society has a moral obligation to continue using these wellestablished power sources. Stu-Mag | 31

Sheffield s best international restaurants... To satisfy the taste buds of all cultures, Sheffield has a vast array of restaurants mushroomed all over the city offering overseas students a taste of home; and British students a more exotic experience. Did you know? Sheffield is an international city housing two universities with students coming from more than a hundred different countries. Here’s our pick of the four most student-friendly venues offering home-style-cooking… Words: Jiaqi Xu
Sunshine on your plate. Mediterranean Grill: EFES, 278-280 Glossop Rd. Grill is an important cooking method in Mediterranean countries. You may have experienced a kebab wrap on the way home from a night out, but why not sit down for some proper Turkish and Greek grill? The lamb dish, greek souvlaki and moussaka will certainly remind you of the Mediterranean sunshine. Lunch menu is available between 11am-5pm, with prices starting from £3.50.
The Great British Pie. The Old House, 113-117 Devonshire St. The Old House is an English pub, but please don’t assume that fish & chips is the only option for food. Instead, they offer homemade, fresh and delicious ‘pies of the day’ with a filling of your choice – chicken, beef, pork or mushroom pies served with chips, mushy peas and gravy. Priced at £7.95, this dish is sure to satisfy.
Japanese Sushi. Sushi Express, 8 Milton St. Fancy some delicate Japanese sushi? Then this is the right place to go. Sushi Express offers a wide range of nigiri, maki, sashimi and donburi – all of which are prepared by experienced and authentic Japanese chefs. Takeaway is available and the lunch menu is priced at £4.90 including miso soup or salad with a main dish. We recommend you try the salmon nigiri and assorted sashimi. Heavenly.
Spice up your life. The Great Gatsby, 73-75 Division St. Time to move away from your hard university work and reward yourself with a filling Mexican-style burrito at £7. If your stomach fancies spice and flavour, then tacos with avocado sauce are definitely worth a try. And, if you’ve still some room, try the churros with a hot chocolate dip as dessert – a classic combination!

Fancy dining out in style but on a student budget? We know just the place! Marco’s New York Italian Diner have launched their new express lunch menu – Marco In Minutes – offering two-courses for £8.95 Monday to Friday, 12pm-3pm. Bargain, hey? We thought so given the hefty portion sizes served. For starters, we opted for the loaded potato skins – two crispy half potatoes filled with melted cheese and crispy bacon pieces. Just the carb fix we needed on a cold Thursday lunch. There’s also the choice of soup of the day or nachos with all the trimmings. Choosing a main course was a bigger challenge – take your pick from a classic American or cheese burger; an Italian flat bread with a choice of three toppings; pasta dishes including a meatball bake, mac and cheese or tagliateli picante; or if you’re counting your calories ahead of the festive season, choose from a caprese or grilled chicken salad. I opted for the bbq chicken flatbread – a long, thin and crispy hickory bbq base topped with red onion, mozzarella and grilled chicken. My dinner date opted for the penne meatball bake – Italian meatballs baked in a tomato sauce with penne pasta and parmesan. With little room to move, we passed on dessert but there is a tempting choice of naughty but nice dishes on the menu plus teas and coffees. Impressively, the two-course express lunch was ordered, served and devoured in under 45 minutes, giving us enough time to get back to the office in our one hour lunch break. So whether you’re munching between lectures or looking for somewhere impressive to show-off Sheffield to your family and friends when they visit you at Uni – dine in style without splashing the cash at Marco’s.
MARCO’S MO-BURGER
This November, Marco’s Sheffield are launching a special Mo-Burger in support of Movember. The restaurant will donate £1 from every Mo-burger meal sold to the Movember Foundation, a charity which raises awareness about men’s health including prostate and testicular cancer. Customers could also add a side of monion rings, garlic mo-shrooms or moyannaise. And to accompany the meal why not enjoy a lovely bottle of morlot, cos- mopolitan or mo-jito. Those who want a soft drink can of course go for a le-mo-nade or J2-mo. On sale from November 1. Words : Jessica Fogarty

SHEFFIELD STUDENT DIGS Words: Jessica Fogarty
We know it’s only been a couple of months since you moved into this year’s student digs; but if you want to live in the best student hotspots next year, you need to start looking for accommodation now - as the popular properties will be snapped up fast!
FRESHER’S ADVICE Moving out of halls of residence into a private let property for the first time can, for some, be a daunting task. So we’re here to offer a helping hand…
EVICTION EXPLAINEd This is an unlikely scenario, but if you are faced with eviction, for whatever reason, then make sure you know the procedure. Your landlord cannot give you the boot without notice – there is legal framework in place that must be adhered to – which protects tenants. You must legally be given written notice which should allow time for you to find replacement accommodation. www.shelter.org.uk / 0808 800 4444
IMPROMPTU VISITS You may be wondering, and rightly so, why your landlord has his/ her own set of keys and can let themselves into the property you’re renting. Well they do own it so they should be able to come and go as they please, right? Wrong. If your tenancy agreement is an assured shorthold (the most common type) then you have the right not to be disturbed without prior notice. Landlords usually give at least 24 hours’ notice before visiting so you won’t be caught by surprise while you’re hosting your annual naked house party. Phew!
38 | Stu-Mag
DEPOSIT DESCREPENCIES Be sure to check your deposit is being held in an official account (not in your landlord’s back pocket). According to the Government’s Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDP), landlords have to adhere to one of three independent Government schemes which safely hold your deposit. www.gov.uk
MONEY MATTERS Most private landlords will ask for a deposit prior to moving in to your new shiny house. This is usually equivalent to your first month’s rent. If it’s drastically more – you should be questioning why!
BROOMHILL Full of big beautiful student houses, you and your student friends can all live harmoniously together forever. Plus you have a good pick of restaurants, pubs and quirky independant shops. Just a short ride from the city, you will find yourself on the number 51 bus as often as you are in your house.
ECCLESALL One of Sheffield’s most famous streets, you could literally eat out at a different venue every night of the year – if that’s how you choose to spend your student loan. A mix of young professionals and students fill this street, which is bustling every night of the week.
CITY CENTRE If you’re not a fan of public transport or using your legs, then opt for a city centre property. It’s a busting place to be with all of the bars, restaurants and shops right on your doorstep. However, if you settle here, your Sheffield bubble will only ever span a three mile radius.
CROOKeSMOOR Packed with students thanks to its close proximity to the city centre, there are all of the local conveniences you need plus Crookes Valley Park is perfect for lounging around – take a picnic and ‘revise’.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. The earlier you start your property search, the more chance you have of securing a property in a desirable student area.

Flexibility remains key to your wardrobe in the coming months to ensure you’re prepared for whatever the British weather might throw at you. Here are a few students we spotted doing it just right on our very own Sheffield streets. Who said students weren’t fashionable?

Sohrab has hit the nail on the head with his slim-fitting, lined burgundy jacket. Deep, strong colours help to give outfits a burst of warmth which is totally seasonal. Teamed with pale skinny jeans and smart sports shoes, he makes keeping out the chills look easy! Having a staple coat which can be dressed up or down is an utter must to make sure your autumn wardrobe remains affordable as well as on-trend.
Caitlin’s dark brown corduroy jacket adds a vintage twist, livened up by its bright sleeves. Don’t underestimate the power of denim in autumn either – thick tights with a denim skirt has always been a timeless classic, and ASOS seem to be backing the thighlength variety this year. Combine classic pieces with on-trend items to ensure you’re never lagging behind, all without having to replace your entire wardrobe each time trends change.
High-waisted jeans with a skinny belt look like they’re sticking around, and Kate’s oversized woolly tartan scarf makes a statement whilst also making a lovely and warm addition. Never underestimate the power of a dramatic scarf; they can totally lift and tie together an outfit – imagine what a bright rug does to a room. Turned-up jeans look great paired with low-slung flat shoes too (if you can stand the breeze!). For a warmer option try a pair of brightly-coloured boots that can handle the northern drizzle.

The splash of colour at the top makes it unique without being too loud, looking perfect with thick tights and sturdy boots. The advantage of large fits such as this is that you can pile up layers beneath them or take them off if it takes a turn for the warm. If you’re patient enough to rummage, charity shops can be the perfect cheap and environmentallyfriendly way of shopping, and they can turn up some absolute gems. Happily then, buoyed by years of experience in crafting games that focus on the exploits of the legendary detective, Crimes and Punishments resolutely stands as the most accomplished and polished take on the Baker Street. The game picks up nearly as soon as the first case is underway with the emphasis that each clue you inspect, each thought you have, each and every witness you speak to, can drastically change the outcome the player will reach as they proceed. While each case has one definite guilty party which is supposed to be the proper outcome, the game doesn’t slam the wrong outcome in your face. In fact, at the end of each case you have the option to see if who you pinned the charges on was the right one or not, and it plays out nicely as an optional spoiler if you wish. At the end of the first case I thought I had the charges pinned on the right person. I thought it couldn’t possibly be anyone else with all the evidence at hand... I was wrong. The game doesn’t tell you who the guilty party is however, it will just tell you if you were right or wrong. From then on, I resisted the urge to see if I was right or not, opting instead to press on because, after all, Sherlock wouldn’t have that luxury of seeing if he was wrong or not just by looking at a sheet of paper when the case is closed. Overall this is one of the best Sherlock Holmes games made in a long time, the game will take quite a while to complete as you need to examine all the evidence to ascertain who the killer is. I would give it a strong 8/10.
Alien: Isolation radiates dread due, in part, to its recognition of what made Alien so terrifying in the first place. The game is set on the Sevastopol (a space station in a state of total collapse through bureaucratic meddling) amongst a desperate crew, rogue ‘Working Joe’ androids, and whispers of a lurking predator. You play as Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Alien’s famous protagonist, in search of answers about the events on the Nostromo 15 years prior and determined to discover her mother’s fate. In a brave move, for the first hour the alien is largely absent, which ratchets up the tension and gives the stellar sound design and lighting engine its time to shine. But when it does show? It’s beautifully terrifying. You’ll eventually gather resources for crafting devices and find weapons that fend off the alien or divert its attention to the other hostile inhabitants of the ship, but it remains impervious to any lasting harm. After death you’ll have learnt a little more about your opposition, but its dynamic AI ensures no encounter is the same with spawn points and patrol paths differing on each new gauntlet run. It’s an exhilarating feeling getting past that final locked door and scrambling for the fleeting safety of an elevator, knowing that the dot on the franchises’ signature motion tracker is closing in on your position. Alien Isolation is an unforgiving experience, but one that stays true to its origins by recreating the feel, look and atmosphere of its source material. At between 15-20 hours on a normal play-through the game begins to waver in focus towards the closing stages. Yet for those moments spent anxiously peering between the grates of a locker at a scouring embodiment of sheer horror, Alien: Isolation finally gives the video game world a definitive interpretation of the Alien mythos. Overall I would say this is a great game although I’d give it a 7/10 as it can get quite repetitive.

New apps for november 2014
Swype
whosampled pocketdrive Price: Free
Price: Free
Android users will scoff at this entry as Swype has been available to them since… well a very long time. Apple’s new iOS 8 has finally granted iPhone users the ability to use third party keyboards and Swype have stepped in with an app that means you’ll never have to lift a finger again (sort of). As you drag your thumb from key to key, Swype recognises the letters that you’re inputting by tracking the changes in direction. It doesn’t look much different from the standard iPhone keyboard and so won’t spoil the clean, tidy look.
Sometimes holding down a conversation about new music can feel more like a competition than a pleasant bit of socialising. The charts are chock full of sampleheavy dance music at the moment, and ever since hip-hop began way back with Afrika Bambaata, musicians have made an artform of appropriating snippets of other songs. Available on the App Store since 2012, WhoSampled is now available to Android users as well. To make things better it no longer costs the £2 that Apple users have had to fork out.
This Apple exclusive app turns your iPhone or iPad into a wireless USB stick. So long as you are within range of an internet connection, it will connect your device with your computer, allowing you to transfer files to and fro. The interface is user-friendly and very easy to navigate, whilst the tutorials are comprehensive. The only catch is that you have to pay to increase the size of your Pocket Drive - the standard download only allows 250MB of files, however, it only costs £1.49 to upgrade to 4GB.

The rumours are true! The Style Bar has expanded to open a sister salon, The Nail Bar. Based at Blenheim Reach, the Sheffield venue is now a hair and beauty hotspot offering a luxurious and relaxing pampering experience in a unique and sinfully glamourous location. If you’ve already visited The Style Bar – Sheffield’s first dedicated blow-out bar – which opened its doors last spring, then you’ll know the standard to expect. Be treated like a princess, no less, as you step up to the gold thrones that dominate the pedicure treatment area. There’s also a sleek nail bar where each technician has their own station offering express and luxury manicures from £14, plus acrylics, gel (Gelish and OPI), SNS and nail art extras. Most impressive is the Christian Louboutin polish – The Nail Bar is the only salon in Sheffield, if not the North of England, to stock and apply the polish. Each customer also receives a complimentary glass of Prosecco with any treatment and their very own sterile pack of treatment tools. A fully-qualified make-up artist is also located on site, offering full or part make-overs using MAC cosmetics, plus waxing is performed in a private treatment room.

e love discovering the hidden treasures of Sheffield, and this is definitely one of them! Beauty Boxx opened its doors in May this year; an independent salon specialising in beauty and massage treatments. Part of The Studio Academy – a Sheffield training school for budding hairdressers and beauty therapists – the salon is tucked away on level five of Canada House boasting skyline views of the city centre. There’s an air of exclusivity as you step out of the lift and in to the contemporary and bright salon space. You feel a million miles away from the busy shopping streets below. Run by Helen Pass – a fully qualified beauty therapist, holistic therapist and sports masseuse with more than 15 years industry experience – Beauty Boxx offers all types of massage, facials, manicures, pedicures, waxing, tanning and make-up. I booked in for a back massage and facial – a 25 minute relaxing Swedish massage using firm but gentle techniques to alleviate stress and tension while leaving 60 | Stu-Mag

you feeling refreshed and revitalised. I followed this with a Dermalogica express facial which featured a pre cleanse, second derma cleanse, a skin prep scrub – a vigorous exfoliation massage then a multi-vitamin power recovery repair mask was applied. Various massage techniques featured throughout the facial but the scalp massage was a firm favourite. Prices are competitive too – It’s a luxury salon experience but without the high-end salon price-tag. Massages start from £18.50 and facials from £25. While at the Beauty Boxx, why not pop next door to The Studio Academy and enquire about being a hair model? Every week, the academy invites the general public to the salon for training – prices start from as little as £8.50 for a cut and finish. Follow Beauty Boxx on Facebook or Twitter to keep up to date with their offers and Christmas promotions.

Winter workout Word s: rad ek kaias
To avoid your fitness regime going into hibernation this winter, health and fitness expert Radek Kalas has some top tips to survive the post summer lull and be as fit as ever through ‘til Christmas. With the change of season it can be easy to start skipping workouts and cheat on diets, “it’s too dark” or “it’s too cold” become the mantra of the quitters. “We have less than two months to go before the party season gets underway, which is a great motivator for people – but it’s staying the course that’s the hard part,” says Radek Kalas.
5. Don’t forget to stay hydrated Just because it isn’t bright sunshine you still have to make sure to stay hydrated. It’s imperative to drink plenty before during and after your workout. Drink a pint of water about an hour before you start and keep a bottle with you during your workout and drink about half a pint after you’ve finished. 62 | Stu-Mag
1. Work outside Working out in cold weather will burn more calories as your body has to use more energy to stay warm. You’ll boost your immune system and avoid annoying colds by getting your body accustomed to the falling temperatures.
4. Focus on your goals and stay motivated Focus on your goals, don’t skip a workout; you have to push through the barrier. The first weeks of cold weather and dark nights are always the hardest but when you get used to the conditions the effort you make will be worth it in the end.
2. Wear sweat proof layers When working out outdoors during the cold it’s important to keep your muscles warm to get maximum results and avoid strains and pulls. However there’s nothing worse than overheating and sweat pooling in your clothes so get some sweat proof equipment so you can layer up and work out in comfort.
3. Exercise at work/home Your body goes into fat storing mode during the autumn and winter so doing small workouts at home and at work can help shed the pounds – get out your fitness DVD’s, or do ten minutes of exercise every hour while you’re at home, walk or jog to work, use the stairs instead of lifts.

We pulled up in front of one of the biggest houses I had ever seen. The driver wound down his window and pressed the intercom button with a white gloved finger. “Hello?” a female voice crackled through the intercom. “It’s just us, Maggie.” Michael said, and the front gates buzzed open. He drove us slowly up a magnificent winding driveway. When the car stopped, Drake jumped out of the car to open the door for me. He took my hand and kissed it gently as I stepped out, our eyes fixed on each other. “Welcome Gisele, to my mansion.” He held his other hand out, proudly displaying his abode. I was suitably impressed, but you must remember, this wasn’t anything I hadn’t seen before. I was used to this kind of thing. “Nice,” I commented, in a nonchalant manner. He frowned, surprised at my lack of enthusiasm perhaps. “Before we go into the house, I want to show you something.” He said, taking my hand and leading me to the back of the house. We stopped as we started making our way, something had caught his attention. My gaze followed his and landed on three burly, suited men that were making their way out of his house. His expression hardened, his jaw clenched. Who were they? Why had they had such an effect on him? Before I could question it any further he tugged my hand and we carried on walking. I gasped when we rounded the corner, he had a beach. His own private beach. It was extremely quiet; no one else was on it at this time of day, despite the beach stretching as far as I could see on either side. The sun, almost past its peak now, glistened down onto the water scattering rays of light across the shore. I took off my shoes and let my feet sink into the sand, wrinkling my toes.

“Do you like it?” Drake asked me. “I love it!” “Great. Let’s see if you like this then.” I watched him walk to a garage a little way from his house. “What’s in there?” “You’ll see.” He smiled. He unlocked the big wooden doors and heaved them open. “Tada!” he said, holding his hands up in the air above himself, as if he just finished a magic trick. There, behind him, was a magnificent white speed boat. Drake disappeared into the garage and a few moments later the boat started moving. My eyes widened, “Are you pushing that?” I yelled. “Yeah” he grunted. “It’s not too heavy; it’s on a slide so it moves off quite easily.” He may have said this, but when he finally pushed the entire boat out of the garage his whole face was slick with sweat and he was breathing heavily. As soon as he saw me, he quickly wiped the sweat of his face. “It’s easy is it then?” I teased. He didn’t say anything but kept pushing the boat until it eventually floated onto the water. Drake hopped onto the boat with an apparent ease and then gestured for me to follow. “What? We’re going in that, now?” “Do you really think I’d go to the effort of pushing it all that way just for you to look at it? Give me your hand,” he reached out for me and I grabbed his hand and hoisted myself onto the boat. He picked me up and placed me on the seat next to the steering wheel. I loved how careful Drake was with me, as though I were a fragile piece of china. He sat down in the driver’s seat, turning on the engine, flicking on different switches with the ease of a pro. “Where to Gisele?” he asked, flashing me a wicked grin.
DRUGS: Words: Jessica Fogarty
Be in the know...
The clubbers’ chill out drug
‘Street’ heroin sold as ‘brown’ is sometimes now used by clubbers as a chill out drug after a big night out. It is still just the same street heroin but some people mistakenly think it’s not as addictive. It’s common for heroin to be mixed with a variety of substances, such as sugar, starch, powdered milk, quinine or paracetamol – this increases its weight and the drug dealer’s profits. Take a closer look under the microscope to find out more about heroin purity.
The effects • A small dose of heroin gives the user a feeling of warmth and well-being. • Bigger doses can make you sleepy and very relaxed. • The first dose of heroin can bring about dizziness and vomiting. • Heroin is highly addictive and people can quickly get hooked. • Injecting heroin and sharing injecting equipment can be very risky, as it runs the risk of the injector catching or spreading a virus, such as HIV or hepatitis C. There is also the risk that veins may be damaged and that an abscess or blood clot may develop.
It’s not all giggles with gas Nitrous Oxide, has been nicknamed ‘laughing gas’ due to the euphoric and relaxed feeling people who inhale it can sometimes feel, but it’s not always a laughing matter. The gas is normally bought in pressured canisters, commonly transferred to a container, e.g. a balloon, from which the gas is inhaled. Even though Nitrous oxide is not illegal to possess, it doesn’t mean that it is safe to use.
The effects The effects of nitrous oxide vary depending on how much has been inhaled but they include: • Feelings of euphoria, relaxation and calmness. • Dizziness, difficulty in thinking straight and fits of giggles/laughter. • Sound distortions or even hallucinations. • In some people, a headache can be an unwanted immediate effect. Risks include: • Unconsciousness or death from lack of oxygen. This occurs when the available oxygen for breathing is effectively pushed out by the nitrous oxide.
In an emergency If someone collapses, call an ambulance immediately, turn them onto their side to avoid choking and stay with them until the ambulance arrives. Remember, you won’t get into trouble with the authorities for having taken drugs – paramedics don’t call the police unless there has been a fatality.

Meadowhall Shopping Centre hosted the biggest ever student shopping event during September, with more than 22,000 students from across South Yorkshire enjoying hundreds of exclusive discounts. The Sheffield based centre opened its doors to a record breaking sea of students as they took advantage of exclusive offers from retailers such as Vans, Pretty Green, Ted Baker and Topshop. Hosted by drive time Capital FM presenter James Cusack, students were given the chance to grab a last minute outfit for fresher’s week whilst enjoying live entertainment from rising talent Suddenly Us and capturing the night in a quirky traditional British ‘Telephone Photo Booth’. New student to Sheffield Sophie Arundale, 22, said: “It’s been a great night at Meadowhall - there were so many bargains on offer and what a brilliant way to meet other freshers – it has given us a proper welcome to the city!” Sheffield Sixth Former, Laura Swindells, aged 18, said: “I came along with a group of friends and we’ve really taken advantage of all the offers tonight including grabbing a bite to eat at Chao Baby. “We came in back in May for the spring shopping event and this one has been even better! We’re already planning to come again next year!” Meadowhall Events Manager, Alex Caley, said: “The Ultimate Student Shopping Night was a huge success – with record breaking numbers of students making it the biggest ever event of its kind. “We wanted to provide an opportunity for students - from sixth form, college and
university - to come along and see what the Centre has to offer and enjoy an evening of fun, music and entertainment throughout the malls. “We run exclusive shopping events throughout the year and with Christmas just around the corner there are plenty of exciting things to look out for at Meadowhall for the rest of 2014!”

Jessica Fogarty

Swype
whosampled pocketdrive Free
Free

The Vamps

Samantha Davison

多虧了自發表專輯《The Finer Things》來較多的調整 時間,樂隊創作出兩首新單 曲“Leave You in the Dark” 和“If I’m Lucky”。 “Leave You in the Dark”寫得非常美,顯示 了樂隊憑藉吉他彈奏和微妙合 成音而流離于朋克式流行樂的 能力。 Tom Asker

Jessica Fogarty

Rise Against
毋庸置疑,演出當晚的曲目包括廣受喜愛的經 典“Prayer of the Refugee”、“Re-Education (Through Labour)”和“Saviour”,以及一些令人 耳目一新的新專輯單曲。 Mica A ntony

Jessica F ogarty
