DECORATING

with BLACK&WHITE BLACK & WHITE DRAPES ADD MAJOR WOW TO A SIMPLE LIVING SPACE

26 Sunshine Issue No. 3

MEET SARAH Professional Home Stylist, Sarah Macklem, has a dreamy home full of beautiful design projects. She recently decorated her living space with custom dramatic black and white drapes that are both simple and cost effective. "I wanted a bold, graphic pattern. I love what stripes can do for a space. I wanted a print that was geometric and large in scale. I couldn't find fabric that I liked so I resorted to my usual ways and made my own."

HOW SHE DID IT

Sarah started this DIY project with plain white cotton twill drapes from Restoration Hardware. They were a bit pricey so she didn't want to do anything permanent. She added stripes with black twill fabric cut into 14 inch wide stripes. She then attached the black stripes to the white drapes using fusible fabric webbing. Then, using the same technique, she attached black grosgrain ribbon to the raw edges. This temporary technique is bright and bold and fast. We love the possiblities of this project! The sizes, shapes and color combinations are endless. All photos and ideas shown here are from Sarah's blog (The Yellow Cape Cod). See more of Sarah Macklem's design work at www.theyellowcapecod.com

T

he year was 1995. Tomi Sue and Van Rusling set their hearts on an old Victorian "dream home" in the Springhill Village of Mobile, Alabama. They vowed to cancel all business plans if they could not secure the home as the location of their coffee shop start up. Luckily, things worked out right, and the Ruslings secured a lease for the 100 year-old home. The walls were painted a dark maroon color and dark wood counter tops were installed. With original heart pine wood floors and a coffee grinder, a relaxing atmosphere was created to converse and connect with the neighborhood. Roastmaster Alan Tolson, says, "Roasting coffee is like tuning an Italian racecar; delicate, smooth, and hot. Heavy metal, combined with the proper air circulation, a trained hand, a good nose and many hours of experience from thousands of batches, is the key to the perfectly roasted bean. In 1995, my search for the perfect coffee roasting machine took me to San Francisco where I saw a working Probat roaster that was over 50 years old. I wasn’t impressed with the new machines with

30 Sunshine Issue No. 3

automatic computer controls. Our Probat roaster is all manual that allows me to personally control and fine-tune every batch to perfection. It goes without saying that we start with the best Arabica beans available from coffee producing countries around the World." The Ruslings say, "Since Carpe Diem's inception, we’ve been blessed with awesome employees, plus we never imagined the personal reward of meeting so many terrific friends and loyal customers alike. We have watched babies turn to teens, young students become parents and young professionals, we’ve laughed, cried, and mourned, and we would do it all over again." Carpe Diem is a favorite among local college students, business people, runners, hipsters and everyone in between. A mustvisit if you're ever in the neighborhood.

Artist Spotlight

PINK COFFEE PHOTOGRAPHY

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Lyndsay Almeida produces colorful, life-filled photography. She started her business, Pink Coffee Photography, a few years after graduating from Jacksonville University. "I absolutely love working with families," Lyndsay tells us. "The different dynamics crack me up. I never know what I'm walking into, and that keeps me on my toes. I'm constantly surprised and humbled that families hire me to do what I do. They know I'm not going to pose them or present them with classic photos and they're cool with that! I love that they just let me do my thing."

WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME?

"When I was first starting out, my husband and I were engaged so I didn't want to use my name (I

knew it would be changing soon!). I didn't want to be presumptuous and use his name either, so I had to get creative. I started making lists of things I liked and randomly putting words together. Pink Coffee just stuck. I guess it was a little risky but 7 years later I still like it!"

WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED? "Walking away from the computer! I try to make time to relax with movies, books, magazines, music videos, or just hanging with my boys. Down time is what helps me stay fresh and makes me feel like I have the freedom to create. Working too much does the opposite. It sucks the life out of me and makes me feel

completely uninspired."

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE? "Balance. It was a challenge before having a family, and it still is. There's always a shoot to edit, forms to email, or a blog post to write. But at the end of the day the people in my house are my first priority. And if things are good at home, things are good. Over the last couple of years I've learned to say 'no' more."

In addition to photographing families, Lyndsay says one of her favorite things about her job is blogging. "I've been able to connect with people all over the world and learn so much thanks to my little 'ole website."

1. READ YOUR CAMERA'S MANUAL I know. How boring. But I'm serious! You would not believe what you can learn from that little book.

2. KEEP SHOOTING I do this with my clients a lot. Stage the perfect shot. Get that shot, but then say something funny or awkward and keep shooting. The shots I take after "the perfect one" are always my favorites. I hate working with a photographer who gets the perfect shot then puts their camera down. I want to scream, "No! You're missing the good stuff! These are not the shots I want on my wall!" Digital cameras make it possible to shoot as many frames as you want. And the moments in between the poses are the ones you want to get.

3. FOCUS ON THE EYES To ensure that your subject's eyes are "sharp as a tack" try this simple trick: Focus on them by putting your focal point right on the center of one of the 36 Sunshine Issue No. 3

eyes. Don't just focus on the person's head . . . go for the eye. And instead of allowing your camera to automatically choose your focal point, set the AF point manually. This gives you the ability to place the point right on the eye. Sometimes a person won't be facing you straight on, making one eye closer to you. Put the focal point on the one that is closest to you.

DESIGNING A LIFESTYLE A CLOTHING COMPANY THAT EMBRACES BOLD INDIVIDUALITY AND UNEXPECTED BEAUTY

S

hauna Hursh, owner and founder of Poor Pitiful Pearl, refers to her clothing as a "lifestyle." Like many small businesses that start from the ground up, she started as a one-woman gig. Shauna designed, sewed, modeled, photographed, sold, packaged and kept up with all the paperwork. These days, she has help with the "boring stuff" and can focus on what she loves most, designing.

DESCRIBE POOR PITIFUL PEARL: "Years ago, when recycling wasn't as cool as it is today, I was cutting up my clothing because I wanted to change it up. That birthed a passion to learn how to sew and go to design school which later fed my desire to start my own business and share my creations with the world. The idea behind my clothing is really about embracing imperfect beauty and not clinging to obnoxious trends and name brands out of fear. Everything in my line is made from recycled scrap. The base for all of my designs is comfort and effortlessness."

WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED? Everything. I love colorful, happy things. Things you wouldn't expect to go together. Things that don't match. Mixing the old with the new. I love the texture of certain fabrics and am drawn to things like nubs on an old worn out dish cloth. I love rummaging through bins of junk, finding a treasure amongst it all. I am very much a visionary, a total dreamer. I lie awake a lot, feeling a sense of urgency to put my ideas to paper. When I design an article of clothing, I mentally paint a picture of a moment and a person in that moment. I think all things tell a story and that's why I feel like I sell more of a lifestyle rather than clothing. The clothing I make is inspired by the girl who lives life without the worry of spilling a bit of coffee on her shirt. I embrace the beauty in imperfections.

WHAT DO YOU

ABOUT YOUR WORK?

I love thrifting and finding cool, unusual treasures. I come home with bundles of sheets, towels, dishcloths, lace, shirts and flannels. When I'm designing the clothing, I'm totally in my element. I have everything all over the floor, and I'm throwing stuff around, putting color combos together (usually with coffee and music). I love how sewing mistakes can actually transform and inspire new ideas and creativity. I also

SHAUNA HURSH Owner, Designer Poor Pitiful Pearl

40 Sunshine Issue No. 3

absolutely love when my customers send pictures to me of them wearing their PPP. It's the perfect finish to the entire design process. DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE. Messy and not Pinterest worthy! I often wonder why I just so happened to choose the most chaotic career. I love having things organized and in their appropriate places, but I have never been able to master organization in my office. I typically have bins and boxes sorting my finds, projects in the mix, custom orders, and of course packages. I don't like to throw away any left over scrap which makes for bins and bins of unusual left overs. When I am in design mode and I'm looking for something that speaks to me, I usually dump it all on the floor and dig through to find the right pieces. My husband laughs at me because I'm extremely over the top about being shipshape with the rest of the house. For some reason I have found a strange peace that maybe my office will never be tidy, and maybe, just maybe, that's ok.

"Years recycli ago, when ng was n't as as it is cool t o d a y, cutting up my I was clo becaus e I wan thing ted to change it up."

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS? Its funny, I don't have one item in particular that is more popular than another. They are all popular in their own season. Sometimes a certain item will be crazy for months and then another will take its place. I like it that way. I like being able to change things up constantly. I think my customers are like me in that way. They are enthusiastic about what's new. www.poorpitifulpearl.com
