MerrY CHristmas, HAppy Holidays! It is my favorite time of year! Do you get tired of me saying that every season? This time I really mean it. Christmas time is my absolute favorite. Finley is finally getting old enough to where i feel like we can start our own family traditions. I am a sucker for christmas Pajamas, Christmas movies, hot chocolate and cookies. Really all things christmas. I try to wait as long as possible to start listening to the holiday music, mainly because my husband won't let me, but he cannot stop me come December 1st. Christmas traditions are so fun! It is never too late to start new ones. My sisters and I didn't start getting matchig PJS until we were adults! So keep the old traditions alive, start new ones, whatever lights your Christmas tree, just have fun and be Merry. Tis the Season. Thanks for letting the Sunshine in.

I had the pleasure of meeting Kate Geisert on an ice cream date with a mutual friend. Kate was so sweet and friendly and had the best stories from her experience as a pediatric nurse. We ended up talking about wellmarked and I knew I had to do a feature with her. She handed me a hand painted business card and I stowed it in my wallet until the timing was right. Kate's art is beautiful, whimsical, and inspiring. Every piecce is hand painted and unique. Major hearts for eyes.

What's behind the name?

Describe your business.

What are some of your favorite or most popular items?

Well Marked is really just a business of paper stories that give me the opportunity to talk about Jesus. The majority of what I do is watercolor and calligraphy pieces. However, my art has branched out in a fun way to include greeting cards (that I personally think are hilarious), wedding invitations, and custom pieces.

How did you get started? I started really getting into art in highschool. Fast-forward to Nursing School (didn’t see that one coming did you?) I made a lot of things for my friends! After I graduated, my friends encouraged me to open an Etsy site so they could pay me for the things I made for them in ways other than breakfast tacos. After a while on Etsy, a sweet friend encouraged me to branch out on my own website… and it took off from there!

g

Behind the name Well Marked is me sitting with my friend in her kitchen brainstorming ideas that weren’t already taken on Etsy (and drinking lots and lots of coffee). We finally landed on Well Marked which we both really liked the sound of and thought described the business in a non-cheesy way. But sometimes when I say it really fast it sounds like Wal-Mart. No, I did not name my business after the billion-dollar grocery industry.

My most popular items are probably from my “Marked Series”—a series that I’m currently doing. With this series I am choosing one verse and making an art piece from each book of the Bible. This is probably my favorite as well because it keeps me in the Word and the opportunity to share it with others.

What do you love about your work? I love so many things about it. I love how different it is from my day-job (in real life I’m a pediatric nurse). My art provides me an outlet to be creative, to love people and know their stories, and to talk about the mysterious and amazing grace Jesus offers us. It really doesn’t get better than that, does it?

What is the most challenging part about your work?

What is your biggest accomplishment or biggest pinch me moment?

The most challenging thing right now is probably just the time aspect. In my dream world I could do this all day, every day. However, I also work full time as a Pediatric Nurse and am in graduate school full time working on my master’s degree. Not getting to paint as much as I would like is hard sometimes, but I fully believe that God provides me with what time I need.

Honestly, I am usually just in shock when people want to pay me for my art. I am unbelievably grateful for the support I’ve received from my friends, family, and complete strangers. It’s beyond my comprehension. Another one was when I was asked to participate in the Shop Small Fort Worth Market… and when they wanted me to come back again for the Holiday Market??!

Describe your office or workspace?

How do you spend your days off?

Hahaha. Well, my office and workspace is currently a desk in my room. As well as all over my house. Needless to say, I have really patient and understanding roommates. Other than friends and my fellow Fort Worth-ians, all sales are taken online on my website.

Well, with working full time, graduate school full time, and Well Marked, I don’t have too many days off. Which is really exactly how I like it. I love staying busy. I really treasure the time I get to just be with my friends and family. When I can, I enjoy being active/ working off the breakfast tacos, traveling, and Netflix binging.

What keeps you inspired? I mean, is it cheesy to say that Jesus keeps me inspired? Because He definitely does. And it is really all about glorifying Him and not about me in the slightest.

Kate with her mother at the Shop Small Fort Worth Holiday Market.

g 20Sunshine Issue No. 16

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? “It’s not about you”. Hahaha it sounds kind of lame. But it is so easy to fall into the trap of thinking it is about me. It is just so easy to make it about me and about what I want, because I’m a sinner. God consistently shows me that I am just the smallest part of His eternal plan, and that He is allowing me to play the part of being His witness. It’s not about me, and I don’t want it to be.

What is your favorite thing about the holiday season?

The dreamiest advent calendar.

EVERYTHING. I love Christmas music (and start listening to it way too early), Christmas movies (particularly Elf and the Hallmark channel), decorating, Secret Santa’s, Christmas parties, ugly sweaters, the Christmas service at church, and the pajamas that my mom still gives me every year on Christmas Eve. Oh and the Chestnut Praline Latte from Starbucks. That thing is the bomb.

Truffle Cupcake From Coffee and Sprinkles

26 Sunshine Issue No. 16

es

27

These cupcakes are the perfect winter treat! Vanilla cupcakes stuffed with a white chocolate truffle and topped with vanilla buttercream! The best part is that they are completely customizable! You can use any flavor truffle you’d like – the holiday white chocolate peppermint truffles would be great for a Christmas celebration! You can also jazz up the frosting by adding 2-3 tablespoons of champagne or you can add some peppermint extract in place of the vanilla!

Desha McNeair Culinary Contributor

Ingredients For the Cupcakes: 1 3/4 cups cake flour 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup full fat sour cream 1/2 cup whole milk 2 Tablespoons canola oil (or vegetable) 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste (or extract) 2 large egg whites, at room temperature 1 stick (4 ounces) unsalted butter, melted 1 cup granulated sugar For the Frosting: 4 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature and cut into cubes 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or extract) 2 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar (more to taste) Other: 1 bag of white chocolate truffles (I used Lindt). The recipe makes 18-20 cupcakes so you’ll need just as many truffles.

28 Sunshine Issue No. 16

Instructions: To make the cupcakes: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line two muffin tins with paper liners. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sour cream, whole milk, canola oil, vanilla bean paste (or extract), and egg whites, until smooth. 4. In a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the sugar and melted butter until combined, about 2-3 minutes. 5. Add in the flour mixture to the butter/sugar mixture and mix until combined. It will look very crumbly at this point. 6. Next, add in the milk mixture. I do this in 2-3 additions in order to get a very smooth batter with no lumps. Be sure to mix until just combined and do not overbeat. 7. Fill cupcake liners ~2/3 full and bake for 15-18 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the cupcakes comes out clean. Do not over bake. 8. Let cupcakes cool for ~5 minutes in the muffin tin. 9. After cooling for a few minutes, use a knife to core out a little hole in the center of the cupcakes and insert one white chocolate truffle in each cupcake. The truffle will melt but as the cupcake cools it will re-harden a bit. 10. Remove the cupcakes to a cooling rack until completely cool.

To make the frosting: 1. In the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment (or using a handheld mixer and a large bowl), add softened butter, salt, and vanilla bean paste (or extract). Beat on medium speed for 1-2 minutes until butter is light and fluffy. 2. Turn off the mixer and add in sifted powdered sugar. Turn the speed to low until the powdered sugar is combined with the butter and then slowly begin increasing the speed to medium-high. Whip on medium high speed for 3-5 minutes (you want the buttercream to be very fluffy so don’t worry about over mixing. Add more sugar if it’s not sweet enough for your preferences. To Assemble: Pipe your frosting onto the cupcakes using a piping bag and piping tip (I used a Wilton 1M) but you can also use a regular knife and spread on the frosting or you can use a Ziploc bag as a make shift piping bag! I discovered White Brick Lane on instagram. Don't you just love the "suggested follows"? I really thought I was about to follow another clothing boutique, but was pleasently surprised to find something different. I found a feed full of inspiring words and pretty prints. The girls of White Brick Lane have come up with the genius way of bringing words into our homes, with a monthly subscription. How cool is that? I am currently loving the holiday themed print they are offering. White Brick Lane is truely offering "prints with purpose" by partnering with the Five Star Legacy Foundation, a foundation that helps the underprivileged all over the world. A portion of all of their proceeds go to Five Star Legacy to help support their efforts.

q

r

Friends and owners of White Brick Lane: Taylor, Candice and Niki.

Describe your business. White Brick Lane is an uplifting print subscription. We deliver one print each month for $12/month. The first month, an authentic bamboo print holder is included at no additional charge to display your print. We are also a part of 5 Star Legacy Foundation, a foundation that helps underprivileged all around the world. A portion of all proceeds go directly to 5 Star legacy to help support their efforts. We love bringing uplifting words and good vibes into not only your spaces, but also all around the world.

How did you get started?

What do you love about your work?

We have a love for prints and how powerful words can be. We love displaying prints throughout our homes, but it sometimes can be a hassle to find that perfect print and execute it, so we thought how great would it be if a pretty print showed up at your doorstep and you didn't have to do any work at all... & White Brick Lane was born!

We love that we get to work together! We have so much fun and our work doesn't really feel like work most days :) We also love designing our print, knowing the impact it will have for others.

What's behind the name? White Brick Lane is inspired by two of our favorite things, family and London. A trip abroad to London sparked just how important words can be and how fun it is to have prints throughout your home. Brick Lane is a street in London featuring current artists and creativity. As far as 'White', we are a mother, daughter and aunt/sister-in law trio who all share the name White from our Grandma and Grandpa. When we put the two together, White Brick Lane seemed like the perfect fit!

What is the most challenging part about your work? We have so many cute ideas each month, it's hard to pick just one! That is where our Instagram/Facebook-@whitebricklanecomes in handy because we are able to use the quotes and ideas that didn't make the cut to inspire our Instagram and Facebook followers!

What are some of your favorite and most popular items? Our most popular item is our monthly print subscription. We also offer gift subscriptions that are super fun because you get to share the love with your friends and family by sending a subscription to their home or space to enjoy!

Describe your workspace or office. Do you have a storefront? We do most of our work at a local office and out of our homes. We don't have a store front yet but would love to expand in the future!

What keeps you inspired? What keeps us inspired is the seasons and change that come with each month! We love finding something important to focus on each month and then brainstorm the perfect way to design with that in mind.

What is your biggest accomplishment so far, or your biggest "pinch me" moment? Our biggest "pinch me" moment was probably when we got our first order. We were jumping up and down realizing that the idea we had worked so hard on was now out there and that other people believed in it too!

37

How do you spend your days off? What's an off day? Ha! When we aren't spending time on our business, Niki and Candice are both stay at home mom's whose kids definitely keep them busy and on their toes! Taylor is newly married who enjoys spending time with her husband!

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? If you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life. Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion.

What is your favorite thing about the holiday season? We love spending time with loved ones, traditions and all of the fun things that comes along with this time of year!

Genuine bamboo print holder carefully crafted to fit your print. Free with your first month's subscription.

Kasey Gosdin of JuneMade Design with her Husband.

e I met Kasey through one of my best friends, who also happens to be on of her best friends. We were bridesmaids in our mutal besties wedding. It is not uncommon for me to ask my friends for help picking artists for Sunshine. When my friend suggested Kasey I was like, "yes! why didn't I think of that?" Kasey is bomb at all kinds of things. Her shop features graphic design, handmade wooden pieces, handletting, prints and more. All one of a kind pieces designed by Kasey.

Describe your business. JuneMade is a design studio that encompasses the idea of handmade design. I make paper goods and wooden home decor items but I also do branding and web design. The whole idea started with a simple project to build my portfolio that eventually turned into a business venture of its own. Creating is something that I have always loved to do.

46 Sunshine Issue No. 16

f

My ideas have evolved, over the past couple of years, into new creations that seem to fit into a shop small market and local community base. I'm excited to see where it leads to and hope that one day it can be something that has my full attention and not just a side gig.

How did you get started? My passion has been (for a long time) everything that has to do with typography done in a handmade style. It was something that when I started, I found out it came very natural to me. I have since learned and developed different type styles throughout creating and eventually that led to making paper goods. Everything I do starts with a pen and paper. I make everything original and then take it into the computer, which allows me to develop it even further. I have started more recently taking the type and experimenting with it onto different textiles, which is something I hope to bring more of into my business.

What's behind the name?

What do you love about your work?

JuneMade Design actually took quite a bit of thought when coming up with. "June" is one of the first words That stuck with me though. I feel like the word itself has a lot of meaning to me. It encompasses the idea of warm, bright, fun, happy and light hearted and those are all ideas that I whole heartedly put into my business. I feel like the "made" part speaks for itself; it simply embodies the passion I have for making and creating.

I love that I can create whatever I want to (besides client orders). The whole process of new projects and new products is something I really enjoy. From the beginning process of research to the final result. To be able to be a part of every phase is something that not only gives you freedom, but is very rewarding to know that you created it. It is something that you hsve worked hard at and put so much thought and effort into and now it is there and finished. Don’t get me wrong, being my own boss is very difficult; there is so much you have to just learn as you do it and it can be overwhelming. However, being able to create new ideas and follow through with them is very exciting to me.

What are some of your favorite and most popular items? I think my greeting cards are the favorite of many. The variety of type and color choices they have really draws attention from people. They have a sort of fun and bold look to them and people seem to really enjoy that. A wooden canvas with custom typography is also a favorite. When people can order exactly what they want they seem to be even more excited than just purchasing one that I have already made. A recent new favorite would be my wooden Fort Worth skyline; it originally started as an art print but I wanted to carry it over to another medium. People absolutely loved it at my last market.

e

What is the most challenging part about your work? The most challenging part of my work is figuring out the “I’m my own boss now!” It is great to make final decisions, decide when I want to work, and choose the projects I work on. However, there is so much stuff that goes on behind the scenes of all the pretty photos, and most of it I am still learning how to do. To own a business, you can’t just have an idea, you have to have the backbones to hold the idea up. Thankfully, I have so much support with this and I am not afraid to ask questions. You kind of have to ask to be able to figure it all out.

f

www.etsy.com/shop/JuneMade @junemadedesign

47

Describe your office. Do you have a storefront? My current workspace is actually just my house. Mostly between my garage and my kitchen table. All the custom wooden canvases and other home decor pieces I create I make by hand. All the art prints and greeting cards I create come from my bar style table top in the evenings. I don’t have a space or a room that is completely dedicated to my work right now, but that doesn’t stop me from creating. As long as I have enough room to create what I want, thats all I really need. My store front is technically my Etsy account or any market show that I participate in. I try to attend at least 1-2 markets a year

What keeps you inspired? Honestly, stepping away from the work is what keeps me inspired. Spending time with family and friends can be very refreshing. It keeps me grounded and helps me remember to be thankful for where I am. My personal values also end up in my work quite a bit. I guess you could say it comes subconsciously. I think nature also really inspires me. In my opinion, all the natural patterns and colors you can find are timeless.

e

This Christmas quote will never get old. Love this print.

48 Sunshine Issue No. 16

What is your biggest accomplishment or "pinch me" moment so far? One of my biggest accomplishments was a very minor moment for me. It was something that really wasn’t all that big, but to me, it was huge! It was right when I first started and one of the very talented calligraphers (DesignRoots) I follow held an instagram contest. She ended up featured 9 images and tagged the artists in which she chose and I ended up being one of them. It was so early in my business career that I had not even actually officially “launched” my business at this point. To have even such a small moment happen was just enough for me to think “Maybe I am doing something right.” That moment was a jumping moment for me. I suddenly had a confidence that had previously been doubt. Community support is such a huge thing and can really make all the difference.

How do you spend your days off? Most of my free time you can find me hiking with my pups (Reux and Red) or adventuring to new places with my husband. I really enjoy being outside and I really enjoy spending time with family and friends. Time is something that can not be replaced and I try to always remember that no matter how much business I have or don’t have, I still make time for my family.

49

What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given? One of the best pieces of advice I have ever been given was by a guest instructor I had in college one time. “If you are going to be or create something that is not accepted into the norm, you need to own it.” I was basically being told that if I am going to create things I have to have the confidence to back up the things I make. I need to show that I am completely supportive of what I make because people won’t believe me if I don’t believe myself. It’s something that has stuck with me, because if you don’t believe in your work, then why should someone else?

What is your favorite thing about the holiday season? My favorite thing about the Holidays is all of the time spent with family. I get to create things for my own family members and other people’s families as well. Giving something that can be so personalized as a Taking time away from the business and putting your presence into bonding and making memories with the people you love is something I am so thankful and excited to do!

We are kind of obsessed with JuneMade's Holiday Collection, but be sure to check out all the other goods she has to offer!
