HOLIDAY PLAYLIST WHAT WE'RE LISTENING TO THIS WINTER

MELE KALIKIMAKA Jadon Lavik The best folk version of this song. It makes you want to tap your foot and drink hot chocolate. Jadon Lavik redeems this song from it's annoying reputation.

MEET ME AT THE MISTLETOE Dave Barnes For the romantic. This cute song combined with Dave Barnes' raspy voice will literally have you sitting under the mistletoe waiting for a smooch.

WINTER WONDERLAND Jason Mraz

Jason Mraz could sing the status updates from his Facebook newsfeed and we would listen. His laid back style is cool and addictive. We've got his version of Winter Wonderland on repeat.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Dahl House Interiors

L

auren Dahl is the creative force behind Dahl House Interiors. Holding a Fine Arts Degree with an art emphasis in painting and a focus in Arts Education, she pursues both interior design, and middle school arts education in downtown Louisville. "Dahl House Interiors is an Interior Design business specializing in E-Design and ArtMaking. I work with clients on a budget and source beautiful items for their space."

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I have always been obsessed with interior spaces and interior items, even as a child. I

constantly re-arranged my room, and clung tightly to random items that I found significant for one reason or another . . . a rock or a water balloon, for example. I would find items I loved and put them in my room or my club house, or wherever. I have always understood the idea of carrying meaningful and beautiful items with you and having them within your home. I grew up with an art background: art classes, art making, and eventually, art school. Even my own paintings and drawings were infatuated with interior design, as my source of inspiration was found in fabrics, color, and aged objects. I went on to teach middle school Art and Graphic Design for three years, but eventually decided to quit so that I could pursue my dreams full-time. Dahl House Interiors became my focus and my work.

WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME? With "Dahl" as my last name, I decided to make a play on words to the phrase, "doll house." Claps for being clever.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR WORK? Oh gosh, all of it. Except finances . . . like bills. Really, the creative process is the most thrilling part. Like I said, I often work with clients on a budget, so that whole challenge of making a space functional, beautiful, and fit within the client's budget is an intense, creative process that I LOVE. It's like a puzzle. The same thing goes for my art-making. I love the thrill of having an idea come to life. I will get an idea, obsess over it, and then create it. It's not always that easy, because things happen when you're working with paint that you have to accept. Like, sometimes a drip or a new color is created that wasn't in my original idea, but I accept it and roll with it and introduce that accident into the painting.

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES? With art-making, and with interior design, my greatest challenge is marketing myself. I want more people to be exposed to my services, as anyone would. I may make a really great, little painting and take all kinds of time to find the best printer and highest quality paper to print on, but who cares, if no one even knows it exists. Moments of fear and failure lurk on rare occasions, within my otherwise positive mindset.

WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED? I'm inspired by the artwork of others. For interior spaces, I like to source artwork, and have that be an inspiration to the space. For my own artwork, I am inspired

25

by the work ethic I see in other artists via social media. Subject matter-wise, I am inspired by florals and bridal bouquets, sometimes fabrics, and always color.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DAYS OFF? I contribute party planning articles and art direction to a local Louisville magazine, Today's Woman, so I often spend my off days running around, creating tablescapes and sourcing items to use in photographs. On true off days, I eat a lot of food, hang out with my very sweet and wonderful one year-old son, workout with my husband, and watch trash TV. My goal is to eventually have more "off" days, where I completely shut my brain off from ideas and answer no emails.

DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE My home office is an organized and happy haven for work to get done. When I go into my home office, I know it's time to be productive. I make art on my large, white desk, or on the floor. Sometimes my office is my couch; or my garage if I'm making a large, commissioned painting. Right this very second, it's Starbucks. Yum.

DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE YOU WORK? No, I really don't, especially when working on an E-Design for a client. When painting, music is fine, but not needed. My husband also works from home, so some moments of the day we sit together on the couch, listen to music, and work a bit.

26 SUNSHINE Issue No. 8

When I need to get serious design work done, music kind of distracts my thoughts. I do however, listen to music for inspiration. Not art or design inspiration, but just to move me. I think everyone does. Sometimes it's good to go sit in a dark room on your laptop and play "Stolen Dance" by Milky Chance, (like a hundred times) because for some reason it makes you want to follow your dreams even more.

WHAT'S THE GREATEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? My husband is a bodybuilder, and weirdly enough, I find motivation in fitness quotes he shares with me. But not for fitness, ha . . . I apply it to my business and goals. One that I like is, "Don't be upset by the results you didn't get, from the work you didn't do." It moves me every time. Anytime I should be working and I'm not, I look at that quote (it's posted in my home office). I tell myself that I need to hustle more, because someone out there is, and they are the ones getting the clients, getting the opportunities, getting to make money doing what they love. I remind myself that nothing can be handed to me, and if I'm not working hard, then I deserve nothing.

JAMIE LYNN artistSPEARS on a journey

JAMIE LYNN SPEARS

J

amie Lynn Spears embraces her southern roots as she debuts her country music album. She's focused the past five years on raising her daughter and cultivating her artistic style. She has a very grown up way about her that shines brightly through her personal lyrics. We asked Jamie Lynn a few questions about her new life as a rising country music star.

Tell us about your band. I have a pretty incredible band, and it's not just because they are talented musicians. They are amazing people who I love like family!

When did you decide you wanted to start a singing career? I have been singing since I can remember, but after I had my daughter and started writing in Nashville, it became a real career choice. It was always a passion and a hobby, so getting to do it as my job is pretty amazing!

I LOVE WRITING SOMETHING, THEN WATCHING IT COME TO LIFE.

32 SUNSHINE Issue No. 8

What do you about singing and performing? I love writing something, then watching it come to life. I love sharing my thoughts through song and connecting people with my story! The energy is indescribable when you're on stage.

What are your greatest challenges? Being away from my loved ones while on the road. I would bring them everywhere with me if I could!

What keeps you inspired? Everything in life. Every good and bad day. Every small and major detail. I'm inspired by how each thing makes me feel.

What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given? Trust your instincts. Don't let anyone talk you into being someone you’re not.

Does your band have a name? Not officially. We have discussed some names with the word "pickles" in it, because I love pickles!

How do you spend your days off? With my family.

SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

PRINTS

looking for something I enjoyed to do at home, and this interest in design just kind of crept in. At some point, I transitioned into designing prints that people could download from my blog which then turned into a shop and a business.

Carly lives in a little town on the island Oahu with her husband and son. After a year of being a stay at home mom, Carly found herself itching to have "something" of her own. Designing prints was a quiet hobby that could be done during her son's nap time. That hobby quickly turned into a passion and a desire to fill homes with a little bit of happiness through her prints. DESCRIBE YOUR BUSINESS LLP sells quality art prints and paper home goods. Our greatest goal is to bring encouragement through quotes. I try to provide something for everyone, no matter your age or personality.

WHAT'S THE BEST PART OF YOUR WORK? Seeing a finished product! Some ideas come easily and others take a long time and are frustrating, so when it all comes together and I can hit "send" to the printer, it's the most satisfying! WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES? Finding time to sit down and work with two little ones! My first (and most important) job is being a wife and a mom. Sometimes I feel like that can come through in my work, so my greatest challenge is being able to hide that! Although I'm scrambling for time to sit down and work, I absolutely can't have that be evident in my products.

WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME? In 2010, my son was born with a congenital heart defect. Immediately after birth he was placed in the NICU. At 10 days old, he had his first heart surgery. It was a dark and scary time but this little baby was such a light and a joy so everyday I would sing "This Little Light of Mine" to him. When I was thinking of a name for the shop, I thought about a phrase or tagline that was personal and special to me and it was that song. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I had a small blog that I would design and change fairly often. I was a new mom and

38 SUNSHINE Issue No. 8

WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED? I love scrolling through Pinterest. It's great for inspiration. I like being able to see patterns and color combinations that are trending. It's easy to feel defeated at times so when that starts taking over I like to dream big and reassess my goals and that inspires me to keep going and renews my drive. WHAT'S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? Do what's best for you and your shop (WITH integrity). There have been so many times that I have wanted to try new things but because I was worried how other designers (that I have friendships with) would feel, I haven't pursued some of those ideas. At the end of the day, I'm responsible for the outcome of my business, whether it succeeds or not. DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE We live in a very tiny space so my "office" is a computer cabinet in the living room. It's an absolute mess, but when I'm done I can close the doors and pretend like the mess isn't there. I pack orders on our kitchen table. It's not ideal, it's not inspiring, but it's what I have! WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS? The prints. I'm about to take the leap into carrying other products that I'm so excited about, but for now it's the prints, The "Let Your Light Shine" and "I'll Eat You Up" prints are especially popular. HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DAYS OFF? We live in Hawaii so we spend a lot of time at the beach. My favorite thing to do apart from my family is to have coffee dates with friends.

WAKE UP COFFE St. Simons Island, Georgia 46 SUNSHINE Issue No. 8

VE

Ea

WAKE UP COFFE is tucked away in the quiet beach town of St. Simons Island, Georgia. It's a true hipster coffee shop with big personality. The raw wood counter serves up fair trade coffee to local artists, college students hunched over their laptops, a group of moms who just left yoga class, and entrepreneurs sharing ideas over a steaming latte. The atmosphere is warm . . . almost like walking into the living room of an old friend. If the smell of freshly ground, locally roasted coffee beans doesn't carry you away from the world outside, maybe the colorful, one of a kind accessories and home goods will. In addition to a beautiful menu of coffee and teas, Wake Up offers a shop filled with handmade products from around the world. Jewelry, bags, toys, journals, and greeting cards sit on the shelves with little tags explaining the story of each piece. Most items are made by women in third world countries who are provided income by selling their goods to mission-minded business owners. Those business owners then place the goods in Wake Up Coffee to get the 47

word out about these hard working artisans, and ensure fair trade prices. It helps remind patrons that the world is bigger than themselves. Owner, Bo Mann, says, "After graduating from the University of Georgia in 2006 I quickly began my first real job. It didn't take long until I became restless, longing for something outside of the typical nine-to-five job. For so many years I had studied and talked about the injustice in the world, but I’d never really seen it with my own eyes. I constantly challenged others to do something to help but I had never fully done anything myself. I decided that in order to truly understand the social imbalance in our world, I would have to experience it first hand. So I quit---my job, my life, everything so that I could discover. The following two years of my life I spent traveling, learning new cultures, and spending time with new people groups. I was privileged to explore Africa, Eastern Europe and Haiti. I was involved in relief work, teaching, and sometimes just sharing life. I fell in love with the different cultures I was able to experience and the incredible people I encountered. My heart swelled for them and I was forever changed. Although I experienced

49

50 SUNSHINE Issue No. 8

a lot of joy during my travels, my eyes were opened to the immense poverty, injustice and depravity that exists in developing countries. During my time overseas, one recurring thought ran through my head: “now that I know, I must do something.” After returning to the States, I gathered my experiences and searched for a way to help the people that I had grown to love. I focused on the cultures I experienced, immediately thinking of tea and coffee, and the communal role it played in North African culture. My love for culture, coffee and people birthed the idea for Wake Up Coffee Company. My vision was for a place where Fair Trade principles, advocacy for the poor, and sustainability are the basis of business. In the fall of 2009, Wake Up Coffee Company opened it’s doors. My goal with Wake Up Coffee Company is to create a place of community. Where we can all become educated about the injustices in the world, as well as be an active part of eliminating those injustices." Learn more about Wake Up www.wakeupcoffeeco.com
