H&M Conscious Exclusive A modern collection full of historic charm
The 2016 Conscious Exclusive Collection effortlessly merges a sense of history with modernity. Launched to coincide with the opening of the exhibition Fashion Forward - 300 years of Fashion at the MuseĚ e des Arts DeĚ coratifs, to which it pays homage, the collection conveys an idea of painterly and sophisticated elegance. the talk - page 30
The H&M design team has delved into the museum’s collections of archival fashions in order to pick up key pieces from the last three centuries of haute couture. The result is a contemporary and artistic collection that is soulful, progressive, conscious and truly unique. The collection will be available in approximately 180 stores worldwide and online from April 7. “Working with innovative sustainable materials and ornate embellishment, the collection is a layering of references, shapes and textures topped off by intensely decorative accessories and decoinspired bijoux,” says AnnSofie Johansson, Creative Advisor at H&M. The fluid and easy silhouette revolves around languid dresses, arty kaftans and sculpted skirts. Prints add a dash of surprise, turning dresses into trompe l’oeil paintings or sculptures. A long ball gown with a deep neckline features a marble draping print; a liquid dress is adorned with a slice of Botticelli’s Three Graces.

Short dresses and painter blouses ooze nonchalant sophistication; creating an electric and eclectic shortcircuit between present and past. “One of my favourite pieces from the collection is the mini asymmetric dress that was inspired by a painting by Gustave Moreau. I love the mix of a conscious, sustainable fabric and an old painting. It’s great to be able to have sustainable clothes that still look red carpetready,” says Julia Restoin Roitfeld, the face of the campaign. Materials include organic silk, hemp, recycled linen and Tencel® blends as well as new innovative materials such as beads and rhinestones made from recycled glass and Denimite − a material made out of recycled worn-out denim, which H&M is the first fashion company to use. Shana has a more relaxed and clean start this season in their collection lines and patterns. The classic blue denim becomes máximum protagonist this spring. Sailor stripes are stronger than ever and pastel colors are present in all the collections, but always providing great strength and carácter to the garments. Boho style is still a source of inspiration but is starting to lose strength gradually. We can see represented in Shana’s collections a more feminine and romantic style with long dresses, dipsy pattern and flared sleeves, all perfect for day time look. As well as bold colors with darker version, crochet finishes and ethnic prints for a festival look. In terms of key items, we’ll find pleated skirts,clulotte pants and of course midi skirts. New Footwear brand Arnaa Launches at Harvey Nichols Kuwait

This March sees Farah Sultan launch her debut collection at renowned international luxury retailer, Harvey Nichols Kuwait. The Arnaa Spring Summer collection combines Italian artisanal skills with a whimsical, spirited sensibility. Founder and creative director, Sultan, draws inspiration from the botanical universe, the pop fantasy culture of the 1980s and the elegant detailing of turn of the 20th century footwear. Exotic hand- stitched 3D leather blooms in brilliant shades of primrose pink, turquoise and violet are a leitmotif throughout the collection. The erotic orchid features on the Taranto style – a patent leather cone heeled sandal with a leaf decorated ankle strap. The cherry blossom flower (symbol of grace and beauty) is embroidered onto the pointed vamp of the Carlotta flat, turning an everyday staple into a celebratory statement. Throughout the collection, Sultan deploys her signature black and white stripe pinstripe pattern as graphic piping as well as on inner soles and statement vamps. The optic detailing sets off the vibrant colour palette of citrine, rose gold, tangerine turquoise and pink bringing new energy to
classic styles such as the Suva – a platform pump with a cigarette heel and striped vamp. Sultan, who was born and raised in Kuwait city and trained in footwear at Ars Sutoria in Milan, insists on both comfort and delight. Her shoes are ergonomically designed and incorporate hidden internal cushioning and strong heels to allow for easy, elegant movement. Founded in 2015, the Arnaa brand is a handcrafted ‘Made in Italy’ collection that fuses artisan skills with innovate shapes and decoration. Tell us a little bit about yourself, what would you want the world to know about Sandra Choi? I am the Creative Director of Jimmy Choo, I have worked at Jimmy Choo my whole career from when the brand began in 1996. This year marks our 20th Anniversary, I can’t believe 20 years have gone by so quickly and at the same time I can’t believe how much we have achieved in a relatively short amount of time. Out of work I am a mother to two girls and I live in Battersea, London and try to escape to our house in the English countryside at weekends.
You went to Central Saint Martins and studied Fashion Design; in what ways did that boost your way into the world of fashion? It was accidental. I had moved from the Isle of Wight to London and was living with my aunt and uncle, Jimmy whilst studying my A levels. All I wanted to do was get into Central St Martin’s as other great fashion designers had done before me. When I was on my art foundation course my tutor said I had a talent for product design, I then begun my fashion degree and my heart was set on working in fashion. At the same time the talk - page 39

I was spending more and more time at the studio as I was fascinated by the shoe business. It was serendipity that the path I ended up choosing combined the best of both worlds – product design and fashion. What do you look back on as being a turning point on the road to becoming Creative Director? I was responsible for designing the seasonal fashion collections from the beginning, I have been with Jimmy Choo my entire working life, it has become second nature and it is part of who I am. When the company transitioned in 2013 my role evolved to leading the creative design process across all product categories as well as the brand image whilst being a public spokesperson for the brand, it is something I am learning to balance, I feel immensely proud of my role. How do you maintain the vision of Jimmy Choo across the creative outlets available? It is important to respect our core personality whilst gently evolving our fashion collections. We are committed to creating the highest quality pieces with our manufacturing based in Italy. Heels will always be at the core of the Jimmy Choo brand and our affinity with the Red Carpet continues to reinforce our heritage in creating beautiful and glamorous shoes for the big entrance making moments in life. the talk - page 40
However, Jimmy Choo is like a precious jewel, we are multi-faceted and are also committed to innovating our design and creating modern fashion pieces. Why do you think Jimmy Choo is the shoe of choice for the most glamorous events such as the Red Carpet? The Red Carpet calls for designs that are graceful, elegant and timeless. The pictures stay with us for decades. We realised this early on when we went to LA for the first time to host our now “annual Oscar’s suite” where stylists and celebrities come to choose their shoes and bags. The reaction was so positive that we now create a dedicated Awards season collection each year catering to the specific needs of those fairytale entrance making moments. Sex and The City was one of the biggest moments for Jimmy Choo, what exactly was the scale of its impact in terms of notability and branding? There is no denying that it was one of the defining moments in making the brand a global name. It reinforced the emotional connection women have with their shoes, the power they have to transform both physically and emotionally, the confidence they can give you. Combined with our success on the red carpet it played a key role in establishing Jimmy Choo as a global brand. the talk - page 41

How do you keep Jimmy Choo fresh from a creative perspective? Innovation and evolving our collections. Each collection will have a theme, there will be high fashion interpretations to tell the story as well easier to wear pieces that illustrate elements of the seasonal theme. We just introduced a new signature stiletto pump to the collection. The difference may seem small but the slightly chiseled toe offers a softer point and the angled heel the illusion of additional height. What are your sources of inspiration when creating a raw idea for the new season? So many things inspire me – I am a creative and my eyes are always open for new sources of inspiration. Photographic books and art are constant sources as well as nature and the sights I see every day whether at home in London, at our house in the countryside or travelling around the world. When brainstorming for a new collection, what is the first thing that pops in your head? Take us through the process. It usually starts with a single inspiration that I can see translating into a story across all our key silhouettes from pumps to booties, flats to sneakers and of course our bag collections as well as introducing completely new pieces. For example, for SS16 I was drawn to the positive the talk - page 42
energy of California, the blue skies punctuated with swaying palm trees and the laid back glamour of Los Angeles; as a result the colour palette reflects this mood and design details include palm prints in a number of iterations across shoes and bags.Then I sketch out initial ideas and work closely with my design team to create the full collection. There are lots of edits before we sample the final collection, I still feel excited when we receive the first prototypes, keen to see whether the fantasy has come to life as I dreamed. Jimmy Choo is a well known brand worldwide, especially in the Middle East. Do you plan on doing something special for the women that wear Jimmy Choo here? Our customer’s in the Middle East love to dress up, we have some beautiful pieces in the Spring Summer collection that will make a real statement as well as the timeless pieces from the MEMENTO collection launching in May. The crystal embellished ROX and STORM are guaranteed to make a memorable entrance. How do you see your work is appreciated and interpreted by the Kuwaiti society? Kuwaiti ladies love fashion and dressing up. They embrace the concept of glamorous dressing for dinner and meeting friends. They enjoy a busy social life and fashion plays an important part in it.
What are your goals and targets for the future? What is your next project or your next big step? Being twenty years old you have achieved your set characteristics for your brand, my vision is to maintain the integrity of those characteristics whilst pushing the boundaries and instilling a firmer creative code throughout the brand. In celebration of our 20th anniversary, I have designed MEMENTO, a tribute to the entrance-making moments that have come to define Jimmy Choo style. The 20 shoes and bags comprising the capsule collection honors our legacy of high glamour looks – many of which have been played out over the years on the red carpet. The STAGE recreates the corner of a street set within a typical Italian town, with its traditional “botteghe” (small local shops) and represents TRADITION, the DNA of the brand. The RUNAWAY is a street that represents everything that’s new. The street cannot exist without the stage as much as the future cannot be built without the consciousness of the past. They do not cancel one another, as one cannot exist without the other.

The inspiration of the collection came from the experience that the designers create each summer with their Alta Moda, which is showcased in different locations in Italy. Because of their travels, they have rediscovered how people and global travelers see and enjoy summer in Italy (for example during the show, Chinese and Japanese models wear traditional clothes with Italian embellishments and jewels): they represent tourists that have just arrived in Italy and cannot wait to absorb the local mood and culture.

TRIBUTE TO THE BEAUTY OF ITALY: Mr. Dolce and Mr. Gabbana have always tried to protect and preserve the Italian tradition and craftsmanship. Each dress is in fact created following traditional techniques. At the same time, they are very modern and experiment with new styles and techniques. Extensive research and studies are always implemented with each collection. Walking the streets of Portofino or going to Venice and Taormina is something an Italian has grown accustomed to, but for a foreigner it is still cause of wonder. This is why the collection is called “Italy Is Love”. Dresses with “Roma” written on it and images of other cities are printed on the outfits like postcards: Capri, Taormina, the Amalfi coast, the Lake Como and Pisa (among others).

During the post-war period, the phenomenon of the “Boutique” was born in juxtaposition to the Haute Couture of the time that was meant for the richer part of society. In those times there was a lack of precious fabrics and therefore people created dresses with simple materials and decorated them with what they had
at home, thus inventing the décor naïf. The dresses were and are simple (but never minimal!); instead they are very colorful and decorated with embellishments that are both handmade and unique. There is not a specific trend in the collection: it comprises everything that

SELFIE: Some of the models walked with an iPhone and took selfies on the runaway to represent a timeless holiday tradition, while also showing today’s desire of consuming fashion right away. One buys and wants to use the products immediately: fashion is a desire of the now. The selfies were projected immediately on screens positioned along the runaway and posted live to Dolce&Gabbana’s social platforms. There were 90 looks and 70 different finale dresses, each one of them depicting different Italian cities postcard-style.

20 years of Chopard Manufacture
In the mid-1990s, Chopard co-president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele was inspired by a powerful idea that would come to fruition in 1996: reviving the watchmaking heritage of the company’s founding father, Louis-Ulysse Chopard, and recapturing Chopard’s horological legitimacy. To be recognised as a Manufacture, a watch company must produce at least one “in-house” mechanical movement, so the decision taken in 1993 to opt for a self-winding micro-rotor movement was entirely in line with this wish. This movement – christened L.U.C 1.96 in tribute to the company founder LouisUlysse Chopard, and subsequently renamed L.U.C 96.01 L – enabled a new star to appear in the prestige watchmaking firmament in the autumn of 1996. the talk - page 54
a finely crafted movement L.U.C Perpetual Chrono Entirely developed and produced in the Chopard Haute Horlogerie workshops, L.U.C Calibre 03.10-L is built around a column wheel that controls all chronograph operations including the fly-back function. The zero-reset system for the counters and the central sweep seconds hand is handled by progressive-contact hammers guaranteeing optimal precision. It ensures smooth yet firm activation of the timing-related components via a vertical coupling clutch. This was the exceptional base mechanism chosen to house the perpetual calendar of the L.U.C Perpetual Chrono.

How to get perfect beach waves Every girl loves the way her hair looks when it has been soaked in sea salt after a long day in the beach, especially when it starts to dry. Here are a few pointers to help you score this perfect summer look.
1. Wet your hair: Whether you had just gotten out of the shower or used a spray bottle with clean water. Make sure you pat your hair with a towel until it is damp and not soaking wet. 2. Applying curling cream: This method is important if you showered with shampoo and conditioner instead is just using a bottle spray with water. You’ll need to apply the cream on damp hair from your roots until the tip of your hair. 3. Dividing your hair: After applying the cream, divide your hair into 2 sections from the tip of your forehead until the nape of your neck creating 2 ponytails. 4. Start twisting: Twist the 2 sections of your hair that you have divided bringing them together until you form 1 pony tail tightly then lock them with a hair tie.

5. Clipping your hair: While your hair is still damp and twisted, take your ponytail and clip it on the top of your head. 6. Leave it to dry: the suggested time to let it dry would be 4 to 6 hours but if you’re in a hurry, use a hair dryer. Untying your twists while still wet will make the waves fall out. 7. Untie your hair: after leaving your hair to dry undo your twists by gently moving your fingertips through through the strands of your hair to separate the waves. 8. Sea Salt spray: apply sea salt spray onto your hair after separating those strands, this will help you get the perfect end result.

As I walked in, I was greeted with humbled smiles from the staff as soft music was playing in the background; it was almost as if I was going in for something other than just getting my nails done. Ever since I was a kid I had soft, thin hair as I grew up I started dying it a lot more often than a regular person would, I used all different kinds methods in the ‘hair dying’ book; at home, at salons, under the sun, and even organic hair dye! My hair was damaged beyond repair so I made a vow to never dye or cut my hair.It was time for me to finally revive my hair so I made my way to Element Salon, since my hair was naturally oily from the top and dry from the bottom I was advised to use two different products to help strengthen my hair and give it a healthy smooth texture at the same time. The first product that was used on my hair was aloe vera, which is a plant that contains many benefits some of which are hair loss prevention, reduces dandruff, promotes hair growth, helps heal an irritated, dry, and itchy scalp. The natural juices from the plant was evenly distributed through the roots of my hair and massaged gently into my scalp. Her work has been celebrated internationally as a symbol of Mexican national traditions, and by feminists for its uncompromising portrayal of the female experience and form. At the age of 18, on September 17, 1925, Frida was involved in a major accident when she we riding the bus that struck a trolley car. The incident left Kahlo with serious injuries, broken spin, collarbone, ribs, and pelvis, she had eleven fractures in her right leg, dislocated her left foot and her shoulder. She had as many as 35 operations as a result of the accident. After 3 months of recovery in a full body cast, Frida left the study of medicine and began to paint, to occupy herself during her threemonth recovery process. Self-portraits were a leading theme then. Kahlo created at least 140 paintings, along with dozens of drawings and studies. 55 are self-portraits which often combine symbolic portrayals of physical and psychological wounds. “There isn’t a time I can think of when music wasn’t my main passion” Music unites. This is not just a common say, rather, it is what happened for two days at Dar Al Athar Al Islamiyya in Yarmouk. Red Bull Music Academy has brought together artists from different parts of the world to Kuwait in order to share their passion and participate in the second Red Bull Music Academy Session Kuwait. The academy gathered musicians, composers, producers and vocalists from Kuwait and gave them the opportunity to be part of workshops, talks and share their experience with some of the most talented international and regional musicians.

One of the most notable attendances during the sessions and the live performance of Kuwait Rising Music Festival was Samer Etienne Chami aka Etyen – Music producer and Electronica musician from Beirut. When did you start a career in music? I put out the first Etyen EP and started performing about three years ago, before that, I was playing in bands as a guitarist and singer. I eventually started recording by myself and then producing – I realized I was good at it and thought this is what I wanted to do. When I went to London, I enrolled in sound engineering and mixing courses and once I returned to Beirut, I released my first EP “Happy New Year”. Was music an intrinsic passion or did you have to learn it? I have taken courses in sound engineering and mixing – as a child I learned to play the piano, which rather formed an important base for me. I come from a family that has a deep connection to music – my father was a musician and I have always been musically involved. I taught myself guitar and a bunch of instruments growing up and there isn’t a time I can think of when music wasn’t my main passion. How do you feel about being part of the Red Bull Music Academy session? This is not my first time participating in a RBMA event. A month ago, I took part in RBMA Bass Camp Dubai and it was fantastic! I have participated in many other Red Bull Music
Academy events in Lebanon in the last few years. I met Zahed Sultan, the organizer of the event in Beirut during a Red Bull Music Academy special event in Beirut last year that we were both playing, and this is how I got in here. It is a great opportunity to be here, the interaction with the audience is great. What inspires you as a musician? Nature inspires me a lot. For instance, I was part of a musical residency in seclusion in the mountains of Saratoga, California along with other musicians – this was the most inspiring time of my life! I say nature because I truly believe that music is a part of nature; everything around you speaks and produces sounds; the trees, the wind, the running water. What would you say about the violation of the beauty of nature by the acts of humans? Does it get to you as an artist? Unfortunately, our nature in Beirut is being ruined; it really hurts deeply to see such beauty being destroyed. The earth, its fauna and flora are all one system that works in harmony. I feel in sync with the earth and it affects me deeply when I see this harmony violated. Other than nature, what gets you wanting to create music? Heartbreak or any human experience exchanged with someone else, like love and friendship – it all inspires me to create music. How long does it usually take you to put together a track? It really depends, sometimes inspiration will be flowing through and the idea develops and mature without me even thinking about it. I have done tracks in a day, others over weeks where I leave it and then go back with fresh outlook. I think it is important to let ideas simmer in your head but also take initiative and let yourself go when you feel inspiration coming. What, in your opinion, describes music best? Itself – I do not like to describe or try to describe music. When you hear it, you will understand what it is. Who did you grow up listening to? I listened to lots and lots of different stuff. My favorite band growing up was Sigur Ros – an Icelandic post ambient rock outfit. I went through many phases and was really into Radiohead for a long time. As an adolescent, I listened to a lot of rock, from progressive to classic to punk and so on. Are you currently working on something new? I am currently working on a billion things. Releasing 2 EPs this year besides 6 or 7 different collaborations with artists internationally. The Red Bull Art of Can offers a platform for anyone, regardless of age, who wants to explore his or her creative talent. Artists, students, grandparents and all those in between are invited to submit their works of art. The Red Bull Art of Can is a true expression of one’s imagination, with little or no restrictions placed on the budding artist. So far, 100 applicants have applied so far and will start working on their pieces of art soon with great chances to win cash prizes, categorized in the physical category, the 1st place prize is 1,000 KD, the 2nd place prize 750 KD and 3rd place prize is 500 KD. As for the displayed digital category, the 1st place is 1,000 KD. The closing date for applications is 16th April 2016, the last day for receiving the artworks, however, is 31st May 2016.The organizers will afterwards shortlist the entrants qualified to participate in “The Art of Can” exhibition based on creativity, theme and final presentation. The physical piece of art should include the actual Red Bull can as the primary material in the final work. However, the digital displayed art is a work of art that can be displayed on a screen and should include a digital

What are a few of the projects that you have done? I think in an umbrella term for what I do is that I curate experiences, because even when it comes to a market, its not about selling you stuff, it not about the hard sell, its about the sights and the sounds, what you see, how you feel in a space. My job is to curate these experiences across mediums so no matter what it is whether its an event of a specific brand or if it’s a restaurant its about making people feel really good in that time and space, this may sound really “artsy” but there is no defining word for what I do. Everything I do, I have to feel, if it feels good I’ll do it. I’m driven by association to pretty things, to things that make my heart flutter and I feel like other people might feel the same way too.

What is the first thing that you worked on? It has sort of been me “winging it” for the past 7-8 years. I started in corporate PR and I realized corporate life is not really for me so I left without knowing what I was going to do. I worked on a couple of projects, I started off as a copy writer, and so I met some people through a project I was doing and I was given the job title of a Brand Director. It was to make sure that the visuals of this brand are aligned with the vision and where the owner wanted to head so I’d do anything from art directing to photo shoots, booking the ads, finding a model, writing websites so that it captures the feeling of the brand. I would travel with the brand to attend exhibitions in the region, but I think then it made me realize that we lack this platform for really cool brands and for people to connect and come together. I saw many cool brands in the region and not necessarily fashion brands, the very first brand that I fell in love with was Green Bar Inc from Bahrain. She does botanical beauty and bath products and she’s a mixologist, her name is Reem Al Khalifa. She’s a graphic designer and designs her own packaging, which I thought was really pretty due to the use of life senses and factors affecting the regional market. Someone like her doesn’t find the proper platform, if she was in a larger exhibition she would be lost in the masses. So basically my first presale thing was that I wrote an e-mail to one of my favorite brands whom I’ve never met before saying
“Hey, you know what, I want to do this three day event called ‘Pretty Little Things’, you want to come?” I never thought of doing it again after the first time, and it was before all the bloggers and social media, there were a couple of bloggers, it was only a handful that were established back then in 2010 and I sent an email presenting my idea. So the way it was set up is that I rented a house, it was winter so I made it an outdoor exhibition, I placed benches and blankets and anyone that sat down got served a pot of tea. So I sent an email to the bloggers saying “My name is Nouf, I’m doing this thing called pretty little things want to come and drink tea with me?” and that was it. That was my first project, I never thought of doing it again but then people started asking me when the next one was, and I thought maybe they were just complimenting me so I didn’t really give it that much thought. Then I ended up doing 7 exhibitions in 2-3 years. It was all based on this premise, there was no more than 20 brands and every brand got a voice and it was curated carefully because there were lots of interesting things going on in the region and from there I would say it evolved into brands hiring me because they saw the kind of crowd it attracted and the attention to details, they hired me because there was a disconnection between brands and their audience, they’re trying to reach the cool kids but did not know how to communicate with them. So my job was to be the one in between those connections, it was
my job to set the tone, make sure everyone is happy, invite the right people, basically create buzz. There was nothing I did not do and there was not anything that I could not do. I just figured stuff out and what felt right for the brand, it sort of fell into pattern, so my niches would be food that were high-end brands, and for some reason real estate, because the thing about spaces is that there are disconnections. You walk into a room that is cold, but if you know how to create an inviting environment from that space you will connect with a piece of property and make it warm. It was my job to tell the story and make it pretty and then suddenly you feel this connection that you have not felt before. How did Qout Market come about? Qout market started 3 years ago, and it kind of took over my life a little bit. It was based on this really simple idea of having a market to go to because we did not have one here. I am a foodie, so whenever I travelled, markets are the first places I look up in any city. I would go and just have fun walking around and grab a donut, it was something that was missing here so that was it. There was no more thought put into the whole idea than simply, okay I have an event planning background so it was just another event to me, no one had created this and I wanted it so I just did it and I honestly did not think it would be this successful. We started at 15 stalls in the space between the parking lot of Al-Raya and a couple thousands of people showed up to the talk - page 121

the first Qout market event. I had no idea how they heard of it, so I just did my thing and it looked like a check list to me. It’s a living and breathing thing, you put stuff out there to the world and society interacts with what you put out there. Qout Market was done at a right timing I believe, many people learned about international products such as Kale, Quinoa, and superfoods. It was international awareness and before Qout there was no platform to bring those people together. It was the same function that ‘Pretty Little Things’ served but in a different community and it seems like people were into it. ‘Qout’ was just a really old word for food which are daily sustenance, the idea came from my partner’s older sister because she as well is a copy writer herself but in Arabic. If one wanted to participate in Qout Market, how does the procedure work? The first bunch that were in the market were people that we contacted and explained to them what our concept was, we found people creating stuff like gluten free products or products that were not generally available locally. We helped a lot of people with their packaging, branding and all sorts of things to get them on their feet. Once the ball started rolling it brought out other people that we did not have access to. Later on, we turned it into an application process. What is important is not selling things to people, its ‘people first’ so we built it from people and upwards and the talk - page 122
not from products and downwards, because the focus of it all is what you bring to the community. The people we chose would not only present good products but live that lifestyle, people that were personable and passionate about what they do, and were able to transfer knowledge to others. Qout is a social experiment so we created this bubble where everyone there interacted with strangers and felt comfortable with it. Were you ready for the responsibility that came along with creating Qout market? Absolutely not, because what people do not tell you is that success is heavy, it does not feel good, it is not a celebration. You have to uphold the standards, you have people you don’t even know trying to tear you down, you have people suffering from the copy cat syndrome. But it changed my life completely, I would not say completely to the better. The only time it felt joyful was the end of the season where I slept for a month and saw pictures of people who looked like they were having fun. Everything I do is based on my gut feeling so I feel like when it is time for me to call it a day and move on, I move on, and when something feels right, it feels right. How do you cope with the people that try to tear you down? If I were to say that I have thick skin, or that it is easy to ignore them it would be a lie. I have always had thin skin, it is not something good but it is just one of those things
you have to deal with because there are many people that wish they had the privilege of being in my position and I understand that what I have is a blessing. I try not to focus on the negative aspects of my accomplishments and I only complain about it with my closest friends when it feels like it’s the heaviest, but other than that you need people to give perspective, not the people who say negative things, or ‘yes men’ which are people who say nice things just for the sake of being nice. I don’t like nice people and honestly truth telling all the time is not the best idea, it does not have to be the cold harsh truth, it is about the bigger picture, it changed people’s lives. You will see people who have started at the market with a stall and now have a store. There are 7 people that have done that so far, its never something I take responsibility for but I see how it sort of became an obtainable dream instead of something people laughed at. I need to sometimes see the bigger picture and all the positive impacts it had on people and stay away from the negativity.

Were there any bumps on the road of your journey? So many, everyday, midway through the season a lot of things could go wrong, and I think that is what keeps it interesting is that it’s a challenge because when people saw Qout market they thought it was a whole team or a company, so when it is a person that builds something like that it does reinforce yourself of sense and how much you can do and the talk - page 123

“where I am is where hard work and good luck intersected” how much you are capable of only when you are put in those circumstances. It gives me good training because I had to deal with everything from logistics to government paperwork, to random problems and everyday is a different problem, every season is a new challenge and like I said it’s a breathing living thing. It interacts with the community, you have to adjust your sales and there is nothing wrong with that, its aggravating and delirious, and amazing and stupid all at the same time. Have you done a ‘One Woman Show’? Yea, but I do not think about it, because when I think about it I will get overwhelmed, if had I though it was going to be that big when I first started, I would not have been able to do it, you just figure it out as you go along. Even when I quit my first job I did not know what I was going to do next. My gut told me to run, I just ran, my gut told me to be fine, it will be fine. I never panicked, I feel like there are things you can learn from books and others you learn from experience, and some things you learn from instinct. I have the advantage of not being in a technical industry, I’m not an engineer, I’m not a chemist, or an accountant or something really specific like that, I can create my next move without any fear at all. It is what it is. Was there anything that influenced you to start doing what you do? No, I just liked the idea and it did not exist. It all came together in 3 months. Created the branding over the summer, came back and emailed a few people, but you have to keep in mind it started with 15 stalls, it was not a market in its 100 stall final format, that would have been completely overwhelming had I known that was going to happen. The first one was 15 stalls and the second one which was 3 weeks later was 120 stalls, there was no time to think or panic, there were so many people that showed up and could not walk around, I immediately looked up at the Al Raya building, saw the parking lot and decided ‘lets do it!’ Who pushed and supported you through all of your success? My mom because there were no judgments. My whole household are scientists which is intimidating but none of them made me feel less for choosing the path that I took. It was always ‘do whatever you want to do, but be the best at it.” No one pressured me when I left my job and that’s the worse pressure to have because you tend to doubt yourself before you can even spread your wings, and gratefully I never had it which makes me limitless. My mother is a sweetheart, she is loved by everyone she meets, she was actually part of ‘Pretty Little Things’. She would sit at the front desk, check if my vendors are all doing okay, and when she was not there everyone asked about her. She keeps me real, I am the only girl so we are very good friends.

Hotel Calcutta is an Indian restaurant located in the Avenues. As soon as I entered the atmosphere was filled with Indian inspired elements. The place was designed as a hotel lobby given the fact that it’s called Hotel Calcutta. Grasping true Indian cuisine, Hotel Calcutta was definitely a lovely experience.

The owner has already prepared a few of their top dishes to try. I sat there with my head motioning left to right, up and down, every detail that was put into designing the restaurant resembled their vision of what true Indian cuisine should feel like. From interior, to paintings, to lighting, to handcrafted napkin holders, I was amazed of how much hard work was put into the making of this diner. Browsing through their menu, I was astounded that the dishes were so simple and complex at the same time, usually when going to an Indian restaurant I get overwhelmed because of the variety of items that are being offered, menus are often filled with words and ingredients that you wouldn’t able to quite understand and that simply alone made me appreciate Hotel Calcutta’s menu, although there were a few Indian references that were in the menu, their food description was broken down into basic descriptions. the talk - page 131

As the first dish arrived, the smell woke my appetite up, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I’m typically a very selective eater but what made me keep an open mind was their presentation in displaying the food. From using coconut shells to keep the prawns freshly warm and adding extra flavor, to serving a bowl filled with water, oil, rose petals and lemon slices to wash your hands after eating, I sat there impatiently excited to see what’s going to be served next. What intrigued me was that they had a dessert section, normally, I don’t eat Indian food but when I do I never consider ordering desert, but since I’ve kept on open mind I figured I’ll try something sweet. One of their most requested dessert was a cake consisting of a combination of an Arabic traditional desert layered between a cheesecake, topped off with a flower. This is not your average joe Indian Restaurant, the owners of Hotel Calcutta have put their heart and soul into every detail, making their vison come to reality, the dedication and knowledge of proper Indian cuisine I’ve seen reflected vividly. This may have been my first time but it absolutely won’t be my last time.

Geneva Motor Show 2016 Wrap
Normally at international car shows it’s easy to pick trends. It’ll be plug-in hybrids, or SUVs, or self-driving cars - or simply cars with too much horsepower - that seem to lead most manufacturers in a particular direction. This year’s Geneva motor show did what people have praised it for down the years: it had everything. The Swiss city’s biggest motor event has always been popular with exhibitors and attendees because it’s no-one’s home turf. Tata meets Porsche and Subaru meets SsangYong on neutral territory, and the amount of attention anyone gets has nothing to do with a home advantage. You gain visibility strictly on merit, which is why everyone seems to bring their best work to the the talk - page 140
expanding-but-still-manageable collection of exhibition halls beside Geneva’s convenient airport. Aston Martin probably took top honours with DB11, simply because a completely new Aston is such a rare event, and everyone seems to love the company at present. Andy Palmer has humanised it even more. The car was pronounced handsome - and different enough - by most critics, which was especially important for a company whose models have been labelled too similar for too long.
If it was supercars you wanted, Bugatti was also there with the $3m Chiron, the Veyron successor that’s so powerful they’ll have to design new test tracks on most continents before it can demonstrate its full potential. McLaren was also there with its superb 570GT - everything this company does seems better than its last impressive effort. So were the tiny supercar makers Geneva always attracts: Apollo, Arash, Kahn, Rimac, Techrules and other unfamiliar names, this year with more convincing-looking efforts than ever. You always wonder what holds these manufacturers up, though this year you could see the case for many. Ferrari’s best effort was to change the FF’s name to GTC4 Lusso, which hardly seemed enough in this supercar company, but it will probably sell some cars anyway. Desirability came in small packages as well. Audi scored what will surely be an instant, international hit in the neat and small Q2 crossover, reminiscent of the A3 Sportback in styling, but as light and almost as compact as a B-segment hatch. Talking B-hatches, Ford extended its offering both up and down, signalling the arrival towards the end of the year of a “value” five-door called Ka+, while powering up its top Fiesta ST to 197bhp as a farewell gesture for a car that’ll be replaced in a year.
Of course, crossovers were a continuing strong flavour among new cars. Maserati’s Levante has been flagged for some time, but still won lots of notice. Subaru had a convincing XV replacement and Ssangyong a concept called SIV-2 (its Korando replacement) that was so handsome that for once you didn’t laugh when they said it was similarly in size to the Range Rover Evoque. Renault had a new and superbly-designed Scenic mid-size MPV to prove that the design team assembled by car design’s man of the moment, Laurens van den Acker (who, incredibly, has revised the large and complex Renault range since 2009 - and invented a few other entries along the way) still can do no wrong. If it was funny names you wanted, DS was there with the E-Tense (a one-off electric supercar looking like a bigger Audi TT) and a still-wounded VW (whose clumps of officials stood about laughing too loud at their own jokes) had an interesting crossover convertible T-Cross Breeze. Porsche brought us down to earth with its 911R, not because the car lacked presence or desirability - far from it - but because it played to the different appeal of hard-won heritage and simplicity. Going in, some commentators dubbed it a potential star of Geneva, and it wasn’t quite that, but it certainly pushed at a part of the envelope others missed. Given Porsche’s ability to lead trends at Geneva (remember the show-stopping debut of the 918 Spyder), perhaps a back to basics era is coming next. the talk - page 141
