Letter

Letter/ Lucky Number 7 I cannot believe my baby is 7 years old. This number surrounds us so much at work that it became of significance to me without even realizing it. It used to be a my least favourite number ever, even less than thirteen but I grew to like it over the past few years. When I first joined the talk team, it was only two years old. I watched the magazine grow and transform into what it is today and with every change I was getting more and more proud. I feel like a parent witnessing their child reach a new milestone in their life journey. I swear! As a celebration of those 7 years and as this number represents so much to us, we decided to bring you the better and improved edition of the talk. With its new look and feel, we are entering a new era. This month we celebrate 7 years of success and with this issue we wish for many better and stronger years to come.

Until next time, the talk team

Marbella

Lying somewhere between trendy tattoos, body art and Haute Couture jewellery, body jewellery is a real breakthrough in the art of jewellery. Adeline Moniez, the designer of MARBELLA, came up with the idea of creating innovative and highly-artistic jewellery to be worn on the skin, resulting in the creation of delicate pieces, crafted to be worn across the neckline, shoulders, small of the back or adorning one’s ankle. Her creations are inspired by the traditional art of henna, and beautifully enhance a woman’s beauty with its delicate and intricate designs.

The designer of this crafty collection brings a sophisticated aesthetic but with an edge. The collection is infused with a palette of seductive plum tones, amethyst, sparkling quartz sprinkled with diamonds and sapphires, and aquamarines laden in 18k gold.

Alexis Bittar recreates the definition of fashion jewellery to truly be “fashion fine” which is to infuse fashion, the pulse of the streets and fine jewellery. It’s jewellery that should adorn a woman any time, and not just on special occasions. The collection is most known to be worn layered with everyday jewellery.

Fred

More than a collection, Pain de Sucre has become a signature, an emblem even. Inspired by the famous rock that towers over the bay in Rio, a tribute to the jeweller’s South-American origins, the range is a constantly changing, shape-shifting blur of colours that tricks the eye. Since 2011, its polished cabochons, cut to resemble a sugar loaf, have included quartz in pink, smoked, milky or lemon, turquoise, chrysoprase, topaz, amethyst, lapis-lazuli, chalcedony and citrine Madera. Other pieces of glinting grey gold or brushed yellow are studded with diamonds. In a nod to Fred Samuel’s joie de vivre and his wish that women adapt their jewellery to suit their style, the Pain de Sucre collection can be tailored in a multitude of ways, from the yellow-, pink- or grey-gold settings to

the talk - page 20

the famous, precious cabochons themselves, now easily interchangeable thanks to a clever, concealed mechanism. Always encircled by diamonds, the stones have the sparkle of sophistication that illuminates a patch of skin, a motion of the hand or an elegant silhouette. Playfully coloured and easy to wear, Pain de Sucre epitomises Fred’s distinctive approach to jewellery. If the geometrically rounded shapes are unmistakable, the design now reveals a braid of pure gold surrounding the stone without a diamond in sight. Pain de Sucre’s new look is younger and more relaxed while retaining its chic, feminine essence. Its graphic, elegant lines complement a younger, more casual look with jeans and a white shirt. With evening wear or a cocktail dress, it takes on a stylish, contemporary air.

Vita Fede Vita Fede translates to ‘Life’ and ‘Faith,’ two things that connect people everywhere, and, like VF designs, continue to evolve without losing the essential elements that define them. For designer Cynthia Sakai, this means taking inspiration from life all around her to create jewels that transition seamlessly from season to season and trend to trend. Designer Cynthia Sakai’s commitment to make each collection a natural progression from the last results in a highly edited line that builds on the success the brand has enjoyed since its launch. Cynthia describes the Vita Fede look as “a fusion of Asian, American and European culture that represents an elevated aesthetic, a lifestyle and a point of view that are universal.” Cynthia has always believed that one great accessory can make an outfit. Her designs are best when mixed, matched and layered to suit each person’s individual style.

The floor duster coat

Last season’s statement coat trend has legs for fall, quite literally, and hemlines on the most eye-catching outerwear tumbled to the floor at Dries Van Noten, Calvin Klein Collection, and Chanel. Unless you stand over six feet tall in stockinged feet, then pulling off the look will require some towering heels. There’s nothing like the dramatic effect of an ankle-grazing duster billowing in the wind as you stride through the city.

Etro spring/summer 2016 a triumphant show For her spring collection, Veronica Etro immersed herself in a secret garden where this rich combination of influences unites. The designer is perfected the bohemian look, and it’s no surprise that this season’s focus is within the spirit of gypsy romanticism. Folkinspired floral prints enlivened fluttering dresses garnished with lace fringe. Ribbons and dévoré silk came together in reversible bomber jackets.

The color palette—which opened with muted roses and apricot—gradually transitioned into a sumptuous array of darker hues. While the lineup was an enthralling mix of everything, one thing was for certain: The triumphant showing was one of Milan Fashion Week’s most lauded. ETRO has an ancestry in the craft of textiles - it’s what it built its business on and that’s exactly what Veronica Etro wanted to retrieve and explore for the collection using the softest of silhouettes to show the fabrics off. In this collection, it feels like Etro had returned to its roots, which was apt given that the collection was called Nomadic Garden, Veronica cultivating her own.

Esraa Al Ha jeri

Esraa AlHa jeri is not only beautiful and stylish but is also sophisticatedly knowledgeable. Having been the face of our Chopard photoshoot this issue, we sat down with her and had a short chitchat about her personal style and her decision to have her own public account on snapchat and instagram, generating 200+K followers on the latter.

the talk - page 66

Tell me about yourself. I studied business management and marketing in Kuwait and have a master’s degree in marketing from Bahrain. I kind of feel that what I do connects to marketing. Did you work before? I worked at NBK for 4 years. How did you decide to become a blogger? It was purely a coincidence – I have always loved fashion and my friends would ask me to have a public account and share my love for fashion and style with my followers, until I finally decided to go ahead and give it a try. Was it an easy step? To be honest, no. As you know, when you decide to go public there are things to deal with such as people’s harsh comments, criticism and negativity but I got used to it with time and learned how to deal with it. What do you enjoy mostly about being an influencer/blogger? I love being famous and touching upon people’s love and eagerness to approach me. I also enjoy being a trendsetter and an inspiration to my followers. For example, I received loads of gifts on my birthday, my followers on instagram and snapchat filled the house with gifts and roses – it flew me over skies.

What is it that you don’t like about it? The lack of privacy. Besides, as I mentioned, the negative comments and the privacy abuse of my posts. Did you learn how to deal with these with time? Yes. I started ignoring whatever felt negative and hurtful. Do you consider your instagram account as an inspiration for fashion and beauty or do you aspire to deliver a certain message through it? With instagram, it is difficult express yourself as the medium is mainly a picture, so my main focus is on looks and destinations whenever I travel. Snapchat, on the other hand, helped me introduce myself better to my followers. How often do you travel and what is your favorite country? Every 2 months. My favorite place is London – it is a beautiful city and shopping in London is divine. What does style mean to you? Style is something that you create for yourself; trends change while style doesn’t. Who is your favorite designer? Chanel – every piece by Chanel is timeless. What is your favorite style for this season? I love kakhi and nude. I am also very much into tight simple dresses and long coats.

This summer, BOMBERG proposes a new version with BOLT-68 CAMO. Inspired by the nature aesthetics, the BOLT-68 CAMO bares an unusual dial and strap imprinted with a camouflage motif. Colors true to this environment – such as khaki and blue – confirm the masculine and authentic identity of the timepiece.

The striking yellow sweep second hand in the center, in contrast to the camouflage motif of the dial, as well as the Gun PVD (stainless steel) round watch case with knurling finishing on the sides, both reinforce the unconventional design of the BOLT-68 CAMO. Brushology: Bobbi’s basics #1 brushes

“The right makeup tools are as important in getting the look you want as the actual make-up itself. Many women balk at the idea of buying separate tools - perhaps they feel that it›s an extravagance or an unnecessary expense. I cannot emphasize enough the value of good make-up tools. Proper tools can make applying makeup much easier and faster. You will have greater control of your makeup and be able to achieve a more natural and long lasting look.”

the talk - page 76

Is it worth investing in an expensive brush set, why? “The right makeup tools are as important in getting the look you want as the actual make-up itself. Many women balk at the idea of buying separate tools - perhaps they feel that it’s an extravagance or an unnecessary expense. I cannot emphasize enough the value of good make-up tools. Proper tools can make applying makeup much easier and faster. You will have greater control of your makeup and be able to achieve a more natural and long lasting look.” What are your most popular products, and why? Concealer is my ‘desert island’ cosmetic—I wouldn’t dream of living without it. More than lipstick or mascara, concealer is the one product that I feel most dramatically improves the way you look. When applied correctly, it instantly makes you appear awake and refreshed, no matter what’s going on in the outside world. How do you keep brushes clean and care for them properly? To keep your makeup looking fresh and flawless, take care of your brushes. By storing the in a neat brush roll (that has individual slots for each brush) or an upright pencil cup and by cleaning them regularly, you can expect your brushes to last for years. Every month or two, give your brush heads a good clean. To do so, take a drop of brush cleaner, gentle soap, or my favourite, baby shampoo, into your palm, wet your brush, and swirl its bristles around in your palm until they’re saturated in soap. Rinse the bristles in water, taking care not to submerge the brush head in water. If you do, the bristles will become loosened from the glue that secures them. (I’ve seen it happen to even the most expensive brushes.) Squeeze out the excess moisture with a clean towel, reshape the brush head, and let the brush dry with its bristles hanging off the edge of the counter, not on a towel, since brushes can become mildewed if they rest on a towel while drying.

the talk - page 77

Beauty - Interview

Why do make up artists favour brushes over other applicators? The artist generally uses the correct tools for specific looks. They use them for convenience, ease and practicality. Through the use of the correct tool for each different product he will end up with different finishes. “The foundation brush is a must-have for precise application of foundation -- it creates a flawless finish on skin and works well with all my foundation formulas. The foundation brush is especially great when applying my Extra SPF 25 Tinted balm moisturizing Balm on the face rather than using your fingers.” What brushes would you require for full make up application; foundation, blusher, eyeshadow and lips? There are six must haves, the Concealer brush, the foundation brush, the face blender brush, the eye shadow brush, the eye liner brush and the ultra fine liner brush. Consider investing in at least a few high quality brushes. If taken care of properly, they’ll last you for years and help you create every look you want, from everyday to special occasion makeup. These six brushes are completely indispensable to me. A makeup artist’s hands are his/her most precious tool. I use my hands to warm concealers, blend foundation, or mix two lip shades. I also use my hands to work makeup into my face, or my subjects face, so that makeup feels like part of the face and not like a mask. Your face should never feel “untouchable”, even when it is fully made-up. The more comfortable you become using your hands on your face, the more natural your makeup will look.

The no makeup trend You must have seen enough no-makeup makeup looks at fashion week to know it was only a matter of time before the natural-but-not look made its way to the red carpet. However, embracing the pared down look actually requires quite a bit of product — creamy, neutral product to be exact, which is why we put together some of our favorites so you can fake a naturally flawless face. Fresh-faced, barely-there, call it whatever you like, the nomakeup makeup look is really having a moment.Â

Why we like it: The shade you see in the tube is what you get on your lips, and the collection includes plenty of options: Sheer, opaque , shimmery You name it! There’s zero stickiness, so it’s not one of those glosses that captures your hair at the first sign of wind. The shiny finish does wear away quickly, but the formula feels so moisturizing, we don’t mind reapplying. 2. Why we like it: It has a glossy sheen and a texture as soft and blendable as a cream shadow. Brush it from the middle of the crease to the outer corner, stopping just shy of the gray shadow. Then blend, blend, and blend some more. 3. Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation

How it feels: The creamy formula feels more hydrating than the original HD foundation. It comes in 40 (that’s right, four-zero) shades. Why we like it:This foundation camouflages pores, blemishes, and fine lines that look pronounced through a lens or under harsh lights, but the formula is lightweight enough to blend in with your skin instead of covering it like a mask. 4-MAC Sheer Peach Powder Blush How it feels: The matte pressed powder blends easily. Why we like it:The sweet color brings a natural warmth to cheeks, making it an easy daytime pick for most complexions. But it might be a little too soft for evening or against dark skin. 5. L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Waterproof Mascara How it feels: Some waterproof mascaras can make delicate lashes dry out or break, but L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Waterproof Mascara conditions as it defines and thickens each lash. Why we like it: This Best of Beauty winner easily washes away with soap and water.

Berry dark lips The “dark lips” season is back. Dark berry lips, purple, maroon, deep red are truly very sophisticated lipsticks that work for most occasions, even the office, why not? The only time you might need to avoid wearing dark lips would probably be early mornings, weekend walks, and brunches, otherwise, it’s definitely a look to try.

Laser Hair Removal at HCC

by Dr. Edita Gasparyan

the talk - page 90

Laser hair removal has proven to be the best solution for getting rid of undesired hair in the last years. In fact, both men and women have resorted to laser hair removal as a substitute to shaving, waxing and tweezing. HCC clinic offers a variety of laser solutions such as hair removal performed by Dr. Edita Gasparyan . Laser hair removal is one of the most commonly done cosmetic procedures at HCC since many men and women find it useful for removing unwanted hair from the face, leg, arm, underarm, bikini line, and other areas and most patients have permanent hair loss after an average of three to seven sessions. Laser hair removal is more than just ‘’getting rid of’’ unwanted hair. It is a medical procedure that requires training to perform and carries potential risks. Before getting laser hair removal, you should thoroughly check the credentials of the doctor or technician performing the procedure. If you are planning on undergoing laser hair removal, you should limit plucking, waxing, and electrolysis for six weeks before treatment. That’s because the laser targets the hairs’ roots, which are temporarily removed by waxing or plucking. You should also avoid sun exposure for six weeks before and after treatment. Sun exposure makes laser hair removal less effective and makes complications after treatment more likely. The targeted area is shaved and cleaned prior to the treatment. Next, each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time. The laser can treat an area approximately the size of a quarter every second. However, small areas such as the upper lip can be treated in less than a minute, and large areas,

such as the back or legs, may take up to an hour. According to Dr. Edita Gasparyan, the treated area of your skin might look and feel like it’s sunburned for a day or two. Cool compresses and moisturizers may help. If your face was treated, you can wear makeup the next day unless your skin is blistering. Over the next month, your treated hair will fall out. Wear sunscreen for the following month to help prevent temporary changes in the color of the treated skin. As for blisters, they are rare but are more likely to occur in people with darker complexions. Other potential side effects are swelling, redness, and scarring. Permanent scarring or changes in skin color are rare. Laser removal of white/blond hair has always been more challenging because with older laser technologies the treated hair would often grow back unaffected after treatment. Today, there is newer equipment available at HCC and laser hair removal treatment on white or blond hair has become much more doable than before. Other treatments available at HCC and performed by Dr. Edita Gasparyan include laser stretch marks removal, laser acne scars removal, skin rejuvenation (also known as Mosaic Fraxel), full body and face tightening, and fat burning. Fawaz Al-Qanae Meet the man behind heroes

the talk - page 96

I used to be overweight....

How and when did you get involved in sports training? I got involved in sports training in 2008. I used to be overweight and had bulging discs. With medication and rehab, I was pain free, however, this never lasted very long as the pain came back as soon as I went back to my normal lifestyle. So, after research, I started to realize that I needed to change my lifestyle. This lead to me to start going to the gym and make better choices when it comes to food. What would you say is the philosophy of The Forge? To be a world class strength and conditioning facility, bringing the true meaning to multi-discipline training to Kuwait, while adhering to the utmost of professional standards. Is there a story behind the name? The story behind the name was the quote “Heroes are made not born”. So in a way, our clients are the heroes that we would want to make at The Forge. How is your gym unique? The Forge is a facility that offers a wide range of specialized approaches catering to the needs of the individual, whether it is rehabilitation, weight loss,

training for fun or improving an elite athlete’s performance for a game day. Who is The Forge targeting? Everyone from the wheel chair bound person to an elite athlete. The facility was built with a strong emphasis on rehabilitation with disabled access. What’s your personal favorite exercise and why? The pull-up workout. When you do a pull-up, you engage your lats, midback, read delts, biceps, forearms and core. Pushups train your chest, shoulders, triceps, and core. So between these two movements, you have got the whole upper body covered. What’s the best part about being a gym owner? Doing what you love. It is great when passion and career come together. What’s the most frustrating part? I get frustrated when I have less time to train – I always love to spend as much time as possible working out. What’s your advice for someone looking to start a gym like yours? Be patient as great things need time. Patience, persistence and devotion pave the way for success.

Upon first glance, the interior is exceptionally peaceful and the big windows allow just the right amount of sunlight in, creating the perfect atmosphere for brunch or a late meal in the afternoon. The menu was perhaps the first thing to spot as we entered, displaying a good number of appetizing Mediterranean salads, pastries, sandwiches, main dishes, and desserts. The quinoa salad was a winning fusion of fine ingredients and bright colors that became a favorite soon after the first bit – it tasted great! There was everything in a bite; the tanginess, the crunchiness, the fair sweetness and the freshness that tops it all. In case you look for all of this in your salad, make sure you start with Gia’s quinoa salad and we promise you no

regrets. We also tasted an assortment of steamed and sautéed veggies in addition to quinoa salad that’s also tangy and lemony, with a plus point to all cheese lovers: it comes with chunks of creamy feta cheese. The shrimp salad was next – a combination of green leafs, sundried tomatoes, avocado cubes, slices of green apple and roasted pine nuts topped with very well-cooked and flavored shrimps. Next was a good fish burrito sandwich, it was both delicious and fresh, packed with fine ingredients and amazing taste and placed in ciabatta bread – we absolutely loved it! It was amazing how everything we tried tasted not only fresh and full of flavor but also clean. the talk - page 113

Pavlova: the is a meringue cake with a crisp crust and soft, light inside, topped with berry jam, and whipped cream which was like a cloud of joy and flavor. While we are on the subject, this dessert is believed to have been created in honor of the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova during or after one of her tours to Australia and New Zealand in the 1920s. The nationality of its creator has been a source of argument between the two nations for many years, but formal research indicates New Zealand as the source. Last but not least was the coffee cake. Now, if you are a coffee enthusiast and have something for cakes as well, you will fall in love with this one. It comes as very soft and spongy layers of cake, covered with coffee flavored cream and topped with cooked slivered almonds. How to make coffee candles

Candles make an elegant and timeless gift for everyone. Quality candles can be expensive, and you are usually left with a bunch of wax that gets tossed in the garbage. Instead of wasting all of that wonderful wax, combine it with some fragrant coffee grounds to create dazzling, coffee-scented candles at home. the talk - page 116

Place the anchor of the candlewick inside the center of a glass jar. Wrap the excess wick around a pen or pencil to keep the wick upright when it’s time to pour the wax in the jar. Make sure you position the wick in the center of the glass jar.

Place the used candles in a heavy-duty plastic bag and seal the bag. Heat 4 cups of water in a saucepan. Do not bring the water to a boil. Low-medium heat is a good heat setting for melting the wax.

Put the bag of used candles into the hot water. Watch it carefully to make sure the plastic bag does not melt. The wax should melt within 7 minutes. If you want to bump up the aroma of your candle, add a few drops of coffee or vanilla extract to the melted wax.

Cut the tip off of one corner of the bag and carefully pour a layer of the wax into the glass jar, about 1 inch thick. Reposition the wick to the center if necessary.

Things You’ll Need 1 glass jar 1 candlewick Used candles, unscented 1 heavy-duty plastic bag 1/2 cup used or fresh coffee grounds Scissors Ribbon, optional

the talk - page 117

Life Style - DIY

Sprinkle a layer of the coffee grounds on top of the melted wax, making sure to create an even layer of coffee grounds, about 1 inch thick, on top of the first layer of wax.

Pour another layer of the melted wax over the layer of coffee grounds. Follow with another layer of coffee grounds.

If the wax has hardened, dip it back in the hot water until it melts again. Once the wax has melted, pour the last layer of wax on top of the coffee layer and let it harden completely, about an hour.

Trim the wick to one-quarter inch. If you plan on gifting it, gather up some scrap fabric and ribbons and use them to dress up your new candle. Old holiday ribbons make excellent adornments. If you are keeping it to enjoy at home, decorate it as you wish and find an area to proudly display your new coffee ground candle.

Top 7 places to go this November! They say travelling leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller. When was the last time you had a story to tell about a place? Here are seven ‘captivating’ options from Barcelona to Nerja, Oxford, Positano and Hallsat - where would you like to be this November?

Barcelona, Spain Go to Barcelona if you are after a bit of sightseeing like the La Sagrada Familia – Spain’s most visited sight – and enjoy the sun on the Spanish coast. Amazing restaurants, vibrant streets and great food, Barcelona is definitely a winner! Barcelona’s great artistic traditions don’t end at the canvas. The masters of molecular gastronomy – Albert Adrià, Carles Abellan et al – are part of the long and celebrated tradition of Catalan cooking. Simple, flavorful ingredients – seafood and marketfresh produce – are transformed into remarkable delicacies and then served up in captivating settings. You can feast on hearty, rich paella at an outdoor table overlooking the

sea or step back to the 1920’s at an elegant art nouveau–filled dining room. Barcelona’s wide-ranging palate adds further complexity: Basque-style tapas cafeterias, Galician seafood taverns, avant-garde Japanese restaurants and sinful chocolate shops are all essential parts of the culinary landscape. The night holds endless possibilities in Barcelona – as darkness falls, live music transforms the city all over: the rapid-fire rhythms of flamenco, brassy jazz and hands-in-the-air indie-rock at vintage concert halls. Main Sights: Casa Batlló, Museu Picasso and La Sagrada Família. the talk - page 121

Positano, Italy This small town is a true treasure. Stunning mountains rise from the clear Mediterranean for dramatic views while the UNESCO-approved village feels as though you are living an Italian dream. The vacation destination for the stars, is probably the most beautiful place in Europe. Positano is the coast’s most picturesque and photogenic town, with vertiginous houses tumbling down to the sea in a cascade of sunbleached peach, pink and terracotta colors. No less colorful are its steep streets and steps lined with wisteriadraped hotels, smart restaurants and fashionable boutiques. Look beyond the facades and the fashion, however, and you will find reassuring signs of everyday reality: crumbling stucco, streaked paintwork and even, on occasion, a faint whiff of drains. There’s still a southern-Italian holiday feel about the place, with sunbathers eating pizza on the beach, kids pestering parents for gelati and chic women from Milan checking out the boutiques. The fashionista history runs deep – moda Positano was born here in the 60’s and the town was the first in Italy to import bikinis from France. There certainly is something special about the place and this is reflected, the talk - page 122

predictably, in the prices, which tend to be higher here than elsewhere on the coast. Main Sights: Franco Senesi Nestled between the colorful boutiques and lemon-themed ceramics shops, Franco Senesi is a light and airy exhibition space with several rooms showcasing over 20 Italian modern artists and sculptors. You can walk around here without being hassled, admiring artworks that are sufficiently varied to suit most tastes, spanning exquisite life drawings, colorful surrealistic landscapes and edgy abstract sculptures. Shipping can be arranged. Palazzo Murat Just west of the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta church, this palazzo is now a luxury hotel. It may be beyond your budget to stay, but you can still visit the stunning flower-filled courtyard, have a drink in the vine-draped patio and contemplate the short, tragic life of flamboyant Joachim Murat, the 18th-century French king of Naples who had the palace built as a summer residence for himself and his wife, Caroline Bonaparte.

Annecy, France Beautiful as can be, with flowing french wine and baguettes and zillions of outdoor activities – Annecy is a gem and convenient from Lyon and Geneva. In late summer, enjoy a day on the water (Annecy Lake is the cleanest in Europe) and later do a gorgeous hike in the Alps. In the winter zillions of ski resorts are within close proximity in the Alps. Annecy is one of the most popular towns in the Alps, and is an attractive setting with woods, mountains and the Lake d’Annecy close to hand. The town is found in the Haute-Savoie region of eastern France, on the shores of Lake Annecy, 22 miles south of Geneva. Annecy is situated at the northern end of the lake of Annecy, and is 25 miles NE of Aix les Bains. It occupies a strategic location on routes between Italy, Switzerland and France. Main sights: Vieille Ville & Lakefront It’s a pleasure simply to wander aimlessly around Annecy’s medieval old town, a photogenic jumble of narrow pedestrians-only streets,

crystal-clear canals – the reason Annecy is known as ‘Venice of the Alps’ – and colonnaded passageways. On the tree-fringed lakefront, the flowery Jardins de l’Europe are linked to the grassy Champ de Mars , a popular picnic spot, by the poetic iron arch of the Pont des Amours (Lovers’ Bridge). Château d’Annecy Rising dramatically above the old town, this 13th- to 16th-century castle was once home to the Counts of Geneva. The exhibits inside are diverse, ranging from medieval sculpture and Savoyard furniture to Alpine landscape painting and contemporary art, with a section on the natural history of Lac d’Annecy. Palais de l’Isle Sitting on a triangular islet surrounded by the Canal du Thiou, the whimsically turreted, 12th-century Palais de l’Isle has been a lordly residence, courthouse, mint and prison over the centuries. Today Annecy’s most visible landmark hosts exhibits on local architecture and history. the talk - page 129

Oxford, England Whether you are a Harry Potter enthusiast or just appreciate history, Oxford is truly captivating. One of the oldest institutions in the world is full with stories and beautiful architecture. The vibrant town is full of great restaurants and shops. In the “city of dreaming spires,” academia takes center stage. Gaze out at Oxford’s world-famous university from the top of Carfax Tower before heading into the city’s pedestrian-friendly streets. Follow your nose to the Covered Market for the makings of a picnic to enjoy at Headington Hill Park. Mix the historic and modern with visits to the 12thcentury village church of Iffley and trendy Cowley’s ethnic shops and music venues. Dotted with gorgeous little villages, this part of the country is as close to the old-world English idyll as you’ll get. It’s a haven of lush rolling hills, rose-clad cottages, graceful stone churches and thatched roofs. Add to this mix the legendary university city of Oxford, with its gracious architecture and lively student vibe, and it’s easy to see why the region is a magnet for visitors. the talk - page 130

Dingle, Ireland Trad music in the air, a fresh glass of juice and a plate of mussels straight from the Dingle Bay. The town of Dingle has all the Irish charm you could ever hope for, plus a friendly dolphin! They say a day in Dingle is one you will not soon forget. There is no other landscape in western Europe with the density and variety of archaeological monuments as the Dingle Peninsula. This mountainous finger of land which juts into the Atlantic Ocean has supported various tribes and populations for almost 6,000 years. Because of the

peninsula’s remote location, and lack of specialised agriculture, there is a remarkable preservation of over 2,000 monuments. It is impossible to visit the Dingle Peninsula and not be impressed by its archaeological heritage. When one combines each site’s folklore and mythology, which have been passed orally from generation to generation through the Irish language, one can begin to understand how unique and complex is the history of this peninsula.

Top concept cars of the 2015 Frankfurt motor show

Hybrid or plug-in, practical or fanciful, show ponies are shapes of things to come.

the talk - page 136

Electrified cars are coming again. Some of Frankfurt’s best concepts were 100 per cent battery powered or plug-in hybrids. What’s different this time around is that the show ponies often point to the shape of production cars to come. Practical versions of the battery-powered Audi e-tron quattro and Porsche Mission E, along with the plug-in hybrid Concept IAA of Mercedes-Benz, are headed for German assembly lines. Audi and Porsche are both part of the VW Group, Europe’s biggest car maker. “Before the end of the decade we will be launching 20 new plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles,” said VW Group chairman Martin Winterkorn. “We believe in electromobility,” said VW brand boss Herbert Diess. They are working, he added, on “the electric car for everyone”. Porsche Mission E Clearly the concept star of the show, the Mission E is purely battery-powered and stretches seriously sensual bodywork inspired by the 911 around a four-seat interior. The car “shows how Porsche envisions the future of the electric sports car” — and what Porsche envisions it usually produces.

Audio e-tron Concept A very similar, sleek, battery-powered sports SUV will go into production in 2018. It will be built alongside other large Audi SUVs, says technical development chief Ulrich Hackenberg. A lithiumion battery pack that stores even more energy than a Tesla S gives a range of 500km-plus. Mercedes Benz IAA Concept A car that gets longer the faster you go? The Concept IAA’s rear end extends almost 40cm above 80km/h, cutting wind resistance. The company claims a drag coefficient of 0.19 in long-tail mode, much lower than anything in current production. The sleek shape means it doesn’t need high power to reach high speeds. The concept hints at a new four-seater to join the two-seat GT from performance division AMG. the talk - page 137

Porsche’s new all-wheel drive sports cars

More efficient and with greater sprinting power

the talk - page 138

A sports car with all-wheel drive is the first choice for more than one in three Porsche 911 buyers. With the new 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Targa 4, they now profit from an increase in sporting characteristics and comfort in the latest 911 generation: the innovative turbocharged engines are more powerful and consume less, with the improved all-wheel drive increasing dynamics and driving safety. In addition, the adaptive PASM chassis (Porsche Active Suspension Management) with its ten-millimetre lower ride height included as standard enables an even greater spread between sporty circuit and relaxed long-distance driving. Rear-axle steering, that is available as an option for the Carrera 4S models, further increases the dynamic spectrum considerably. Interior functionality is enhanced by the standard Porsche Communication connectivity and infotainment system with simplified operation and multi-touch display. The all-wheel drive models include numerous optical refinements of the new 911 Carrera generation. They range from the headlights with four-point daytime running lights, via door handles without recess covers, to the redesigned rear lid with vertical louvres and new rear lights, including the characteristic four-point brake lights. The new 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Targa 4 derivatives also have their own distinguishing characteristics. The distinctive light strip between the rear lights now produces an especially distinctive effect thanks to its consciously three-dimensional design. It also underlines the typical format of the all-wheel drive 911, with rear fenders that arch further outwards

by 44 millimetres. Faster sprinting with up to twelve per cent less fuel consumption Behind the re-engineered flat engines are more than four decades of Porsche experience with turbocharged engines from motor racing and production sports cars. The result is that all new 911 Carrera models impress with top values in terms of performance, driving fun and efficiency. Thanks to bi-turbocharging, the three-litre, sixcylinder engines in the 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Targa 4 achieve an output of 370 hp and a torque of 450 Nm, while output in the S models increases to 420 hp and torque to 500 Nm. This gives the driver an additional 20 hp of dynamic performance to convert into driving fun. The greater power of the Carrera S models comes from turbochargers with modified compressors, a specific exhaust system and tuned engine management. In combination with the now electro-hydraulically controlled all-wheel drive, the 911 Carrera 4 achieves better acceleration values than its rear-wheel-drive counterparts for the first time. Equipped with the options of PDK and Sport Chrono Package, the 911 Carrera 4 sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds (0.4 seconds less than its predecessor model), with the S model registering 3.8 seconds (0.3 seconds less). The 911 Cabriolet 4S and the 911 Targa 4, with comparable equipment, need just 0.2 seconds longer. Top speeds vary according to model and equipment between 287 km/h and 305 km/h. Traditionally, every new generation of engines from Porsche combines more output with less consumption. Consequently, fuel consumption in the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet with PDK drops by 0.8 litres to 7.9 l/100 km. The models with the most significant improvements are the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and 911 Targa 4S: average consumption decreased by 1.2 litres to 8.0 l/100km (when equipped with PDK).
