letter/ We are entering the 6th month of 2018; we are almost half way through the year! This is when one says ‘oh how time flies by’. Counting our blessings through the Holy Month of Ramadan and embarking on the upcoming celebrations of Eid has us all racing for time, trying to find the perfect kaftan for those beautiful “Ghabgas” and going through every Instagram account looking for the perfect hairstyle or “lash specialist”. We’ve got it all right here! Flip over to our fashion and beauty trends and we’ll guide you through the month fashionably. Feast after feast, we never stop and think how our body is reacting to all this food (and sugar ahem). This month we’re giving you the 101 on detoxing and what it really means. Give your body a cleanse after Eid to startup your metabolism and get you back on track, after all, summer holiday season is soon upon us and we are sure you are as eager to look your best as we are. Women’s rights and empowerment has become a significant topic of discussion. This topic of empowerment and gender equality is crucial not just to shape the lives of women, but for the development of society as a whole. But do we really know all the details and what women in our country are doing to raise awareness? Sundus Hamza gives us an insight on the issues women in our society are facing and what is being done about it. Most importantly, it gives us much joy to wish you, our dear readers, and your families, a prosperous Eid Mubarak in advance.

Till next time, the talk Team

Dress it up Eid is right around the corner and this is the time when one notices everyone frantically in search of the perfect, yet comfortable, dress for the first day. We’ve noticed that the “dressing up” days are very limited nowadays; everyone is opting for casual chic attire. So when do we go all out with our ruffled Dior skirts and Dolce & Gabbana dresses? Now! Here’s a little guide to dressing up. If it’s going to be an all-day out celebration, then we suggest you start with the shoes; find the most comfortable, yet stylish shoe choice. If you’re not going to be walking around as much, we suggest the likes of a sky-high Louboutin, because why not! Next up, dress or trouser? Both are a good choice, keeping in mind, with the choice of a trouser you have to dress it up with a stylish shirt or top and accessorize well. If you’re opting for a printed dress or skirt, then go minimal on the accessorizing. Last, but not least, you need the perfect handbag or clutch to complete your look. Now grab that venti coffee to go hunting, and start your Eid stylishly and fully awake; those bags under your eyes are not designer.

Kaftans and More ‘tis the season for beautiful kaftans and dresses. Whether we’re talking about Ramadan kaftans, or summer beach kaftans, they’re definitely the ultimate staple in your wardrobe. Over the years the traditional Arabian kaftan has been evolving with modern fashion trends, similarly beach dresses and kaftans have been inspired by the traditional kaftan! What’s the verdict? What shall we buy? Whichever you please! First we have the daily kaftans and short beach dresses. These can be selfmade or purchased from either local designers or online under “beachwear”. Next up we have the fancy kaftans, which can also be bought from many local designers or can be found under “beachwear” or “evening wear”. Being a smart buyer means you could use the piece you buy for more than one occasion. If your holidays include tanning in Saint Tropez, opt for Missoni or Etro kaftans that can be worn both in Ramadan and on regular days as well. If you’re not a beach person then go for something that can be worn as an eveningwear piece as well, such as a beautiful Cavalli kaftan. Personally, we love our local designers! So mix and match and be ready to wow.

Beautiful gardens with exuberant vegetation, dinners under the light of the stars only illuminated by the light of the moon, surrounded by the beautiful and peculiar architecture typical of the island. Bottega Veneta

Veneta Launches a New Personalization Program This season, Bottega Veneta celebrates its iconic motto “When Your Own Initials Are Enough.” The saying, coined in the 1970s, expressed the brand’s aversion to logos, and embrace of discreetly luxurious products that could be recognized by their sophisticated individualist clientele through singular design. When Tomas Maier took over the helm of the brand in 2001, he utilized the motto as a guiding principle. The brand’s latest personalization program, which made its debut on the Spring/Summer 2018 runway, lets one’s own initials take center stage. Among the new seasonal men’s styles available for personalization are bags from the Stripe group, totes and duffels in canvas, suede and ostrich patterned with bold sporty stripes that leave a dedicated blank space for one’s initials. New women’s bags shown which can be personalized include the Intrecciato Palio tote and BV73 tote and bag. The new personalization program also features iconic intrecciato styles with which a client can create an individualized, timeless piece to treasure for years to come. For women, the selection includes the Veneta hobo, the Olimpia shoulder bag and the Cesta tote, along with wallets, zipped pouches and phone cases. Men can choose from backpacks, business bags, dossiers, and travel essentials as well as a variety of wallets and other small leather goods. The seasonal colors and styles will shift with each new collection. Starting from February clients have the opportunity to partake in a range of personalization services in Bottega Veneta boutiques, some of which will feature dedicated corners within the store. Embossing and stamping are both complimentary; the finished product will be available within 24 hours at select stores or within a few days. The graphic shadow letters used in stamping is available in three sizes and six colors. Stitching requires a longer turnaround period as it can only be executed by Bottega Veneta artisans. All Bottega Veneta boutiques will offer the service with the option of crocodile or carrara calf letters in seasonal colors. Stitching is not complimentary. There is a charge per letter. However, in the luxury world, this service is unique to Bottega Veneta - a truly exclusive way for the client to make a bag his or her own.

Lanvin by the book

Spring Summer 2018 Collection For his first collection at Lanvin, presented at Le Grand Palais in Paris, Olivier Lapidus made a return to the fashion house’s very essence, projecting it into the 21st century. Emerald green, cyclamen, ruby, nude, pale blue, black white and gold were Jeanne Lanvin’s favorite colors. And her style alphabet - kimono sleeves, pagoda sleeves, twisted or flared, flat bows, geometric cuts, clovers, jumpsuits, transparencies - appear here and there, revamped to create an ubercontemporary and desirable look. Olivier Lapidus wanted to draw inspiration from all the figurative elements so dear to the famous designer, by going even further. Even her name and initials, in Art Deco fonts, have become “LANVIN” and “JL” prints which pepper the collection. Summer 2018 for Lanvin will be the summer of lightness and frivolity. Subtly unbalanced dresses, bare shoulders, complex cuts for shapes that seem to float in the air; long, short and very flared trousers. For the fabrics: silk Georgette and silk crêpe, quilted cotton, super 120s wool, lamé stripes and geometric lamé on a Georgette base for a touch of gold. Accessories, the new challenge for Olivier Lapidus, are handsomely present. Sunglasses, discretely displaying the Lanvin name on the temples, a completely new line of bags including a city bag that becomes a rucksack in electric blue crocodile, shoes, in particular open-toed ankle boots. Also many pieces of jewelry: necklaces, chokers, earrings, bracelets in pale gold or ruthenium, picking up elements dear to Jeanne Lanvin (daisy, clover) or embracing a twisted 30’s design.

Michael Kors

Capsule Collection Featuring an Original Logo Graffiti Print Created in-house, the logo graffiti was inspired by the bold, stylized tagging that dominated New York City in the early ‘80s. Rendered in graphic black and white, it is a celebration of both street art and the brand’s home city, as well as a nod to today’s street-influenced fashion. “I started my company in 1981, at a time when uptown and downtown were really colliding,” says Michael Kors. “Uptown girls partied downtown at the Mudd Club and Club 57. Artists like Fab 5 Freddy and Jean-Michel Basquiat showed their work at PS 1, and yet you’d still be just as likely to find their signatures on the side of a building in the LES or your subway car. Today, that mix of high/low is everything.”

Longchamp

Kendall Jenner as the Face of the Company’s Fall/Winter 2018 Campaign Longchamp is thrilled to reveal its newest campaign star: Kendall Jenner. Jenner was approached for this partnership because she and Longchamp share the values of championing effortless worldliness, and of celebrating a global, versatile sense of style. Throughout Jenner’s experience in (and ascent to the top of) the modeling industry, she has exhibited an unwaveringly confident poise, a character trait that Longchamp both admires and infuses into its fashion and accessories collections. “I think there’s this synergy between the term ‘world citizen’ and Longchamp. To me, a world citizen is someone who wants to share more of an understanding of different cultures,” says Jenner. With Longchamp, while the collection always has a touch of the Parisian, it is something that can be worn around the world, by women who support this idea.” Longchamp has always been a pioneer in creating collections that suit the lifestyle of the urban traveler. That lifestyle is something that Jenner has mastered, especially in her line of work. You never know when a last-minute phone call might have her hopping on a plane a few short hours later, only to then land halfway across the globe. “Kendall is free, independent, she travels, she goes fast, always with style – which is how we see the Longchamp woman,” says Longchamp Artistic Director Sophie Delafontaine. “Her talent is not only in the way she acts but in the way she interacts, she is an authentic personality in the millennial generation.”

Poetry Meets Fashion By M.S.K

Mohammad Sami Alkhiraibet, aka M.S.K, the source of his inspiration for the brand name by M.S.K, holds a passion of merging his love for his homeland and the Arab culture with elements of Western influence and modernity.

fashion - interview

A Glimpse into MSK’s Fashion Journey and His Latest Collection Kuwait has been his home all along, and it is here that he completed his Bachelor Degree in Business Administration. Mohammad’s admiration for fashion, well that started way back in his early years as a little boy. He clearly remembers watching fashion shows with his mother, examining the models strut the runway dressed in the world’s top designers always felt like a transcending experience according to him. He developed a taste for high fashion as he grew up and developed close friendships with likeminded people in the industry and the rest is history. In college, Mohammad would construct masquerade masks and now he designs clothes and sometimes makes music too!

(or a lot) of Arabic calligraphy and somehow my clothing line was born.

What inspired you to start your own brand? I had several different visions & inspirations, but life in the Middle East was the biggest influence for my first fashion collection. I wanted to pay homage to lives that came and walked this land before me. I am also inspired by elements of nature I see and experience around me, what lies beneath the surface of the sea, the mystery, the emptiness of the desert, and the open skies. Adding to that inspiration a touch of gold from the edges of a Bisht after it’s been deconstructed, and a little bit

What is your favorite piece out of your latest collection, and why? I can’t pick just one piece, but I really love the new sleeveless female jumpsuit, it’s all black with the front and back cutout, the front has a Bisht trim. It is special to me because in my Kuwaiti culture the Bisht resembles masculinity, and now by repurposing it for women, that’s like reclaiming female power and breaking a little bit of the gender roles of a male dominated society.

the talk - page 48

What are some of the key pieces that got the most buzz? The Arabic calligraphy bomber jacket and the rain coat. I debuted them in the Millennials Fashion Show in December 2017. It was about a year before that show, I had randomly created a jacket and jokingly posted it on Facebook with the caption “inspired by life in the Middle East, my fashion collection is coming soon.” People started to interact with it, connect with it, and enquired on how to get one of their own. At first I freaked out and deleted the post! But then I saw it as a sign from the universe that I should pursue this dream of mine. Somehow it all worked out.

You can soon see it on the Instagram page @bymskofficial.

What or who do you turn to for inspiration before starting to work on a collection? Everywhere! I like originality, I like talking to people and seeing what they miss the most, in life generally, and try to fill in those blanks with clothes and creations. I seek truth in everything us humans do. I must add that Berlin is a city that has inspired me and it keeps inspiring me. The past few years I have fallen in love with Berlin because it gives me a sense of liberation I yearn to see in this part of the world. Describe your personal style. I like to describe my style as ‘poetry meets fashion.’ I try to capture the essence of passion from the Arab world while maintaining a modern edge from the Western world. Merging cultures is the secret. What does the future hold for your brand? My friends in Lebanon are helping launch a website soon so that people from all over the world can reach us and purchase from the collections. In addition, I am collaborating with Sultan Al Samhan on a limited edition t-shirt collection. Hopefully, more collaborations with local and international artists. I’m also working on music project that comes out early next year. Sky is the limit! the talk - page 49

Geox Respira Women’s 2018 Spring/ Summer Collection Geox’s collaboration with Ernesto Esposito, one of the most renowned Italian shoe designers, endures into the Spring Summer 2018 season with a collection of affordable luxury: elegant and feminine footwear which stands apart for its sophisticated combination of materials and on-trend detailing. The product of an unusually creative juncture, this new design slant nevertheless is still firmly anchored in the principles that have made Geox synonymous with well-being and functionality. Breathable, impermeable, lightweight and flexible, the famous patented Geox soles are the mainstay of the whole collection, starting with the daytime styles. Whilst the charred brown hues of the supple suede or python print embellish round-toed loafers or sandals with ankle ties, white is triumphant on the perforated leather Derby lace-ups with an EVA sole and cushioned insole - a style solution which caters perfectly for our busy modern lives. There is a timelessly elegant feel to the shoes made from black patent whilst the ones in ecru leather, elevated with gleaming metallic buckles, are perfect for more formal occasions. As are the classic ballerinas, the two-band sandals and the slipper loafers which are strongly trending this season.

Lacoste

Spring / Summer 2018 – L.12.12 Collection René Lacoste’s inventions changed the face of sport and revolutionized the clothing industry, most notably his 1933 launch of the piqué polo shirt. Now, 85 years on, the L.12.12 collection for Spring/Summer 2018 reimagines his iconic creation through a contemporary lens – inspired by the polo shirt but continuing the spirit of invention in footwear. Belts and More Trying to dress up your casual kaftan but can’t decide what to do? Here is when you start accessorizing and playing around with jewelry. First up, you can always belt it up with a vintage “Lira” dangling belt. Not fancying the belt, go for a pair of statement earrings with dangling Lira’s (yes, Lira’s are trending and we’re not talking about the currency). Another option is to dress up your kaftan with a beautiful vintage brooch. Digging up your grandmother’s emerald brooch to put on your white kaftan will transform it completely. Not fancying all the vintage jewelry? Well, add a mother of pearl brooch! The new trend this Ramadan were beautiful brooches made of different stones to add to your simple kaftan. Good news, precious stones never go out of fashion! Another option would be to wear dangling diamond earrings or a statement necklace. However, don’t go overboard, always remember that less is more.

Gold Affair Traditional is beautiful. While entering Ramadan and prepping for Eid, it’s always nice to see people looking back at old traditions and trying to relive them. Gold has forever been the most generous and beautiful gift given at weddings, birthdays, and baby showers in the region. Also, vintage gold jewelry has been passed down through generations of families. Let’s not even start talking about those cute gold bangles on young girls! A visit to the gold souk is a good idea to refresh your jewelry options and just in time for the season. You have the option of customizing something simple and elegant. Or you can mix and match from the available designs. Usually girls opt for bangles or the “hama” which is a gold hair accessory that used to be worn at weddings by the bride.

Boucheron Paris Serpent Bohème Emblematic of the Maison Boucheron, the Serpent Bohème collection is a hallmark of the very essence of Boucheron. In 1888, on the eve of one of his countless voyages around the world, Frédéric Boucheron, to show his unending love, protection and joy, offered his wife Gabrielle a necklace in the form of a serpent. From that moment, the figure of the serpent has continued to inspire, never leaving the creations of Boucheron. The first Serpent Bohème collection launched in 1968, has become one of the very iconic lines of the Maison. Today the numerous transformations of this icon of Boucheron, continually reinvented, live on beyond the passing of time. Playing with unexpected motifs, it is the Boucheron creation par excellence which makes this collection timeless and so seductive.

Messika Introducing the Shahrazad Set from the BaselWorld 2018 High Jewelry Collection (As part of Arabian Nights) Shahrazad Collier: Inspired by the courage and determination of Shahrazad, in the Arabian Nights tale, Valerie Messika has designed this plastron necklace with oriental influences. Its hypnotic arrangement of pear and marquise cut diamonds sways with a balanced sensuality. With their characteristically slender form, the 215 marquise-cut diamonds and 151 pear-shaped diamonds are combined with pear-cut diamonds positioned both head-up and head-down. Owing to the use of the knife-edge thread technique, the diamonds appear to levitate alongside one another. Shahrazad Bracelet & Rings: Valerie Messika has envisioned two pieces worthy of the marriage of princess from the Arabian Nights. This feminine and highly-sensual bracelet adorns the lower wrist, upper palm and each individual finger. Each ring is different to enhance the originality of this unique piece: a single-row ring, a double-row ring, and a double ring with a drop bead. Shahrazad Earrings: A pair of asymmetrical earrings reaffirm Messika’s signature sense of liberty. In a chic detail, two small pear-shaped diamonds set as drop-beads are positioned on the upper portion of one earring.

Van Cleef & Arpels

Alhambra: Celebrating Luck Since 1968 In 1968, the Maison unveiled a true icon of luck: the Alhambra® collection. Inspired by the four-leaf clover, its motif has endured, embodying the timeless style of Van Cleef & Arpels and the excellence of its savoir-faire. Fifty years after the creation of the first Alhambra long necklace, the Maison is presenting new creations that showcase the fluidity and elegance of the design. The iridescence of gray mother-of-pearl is complemented by the sparkle of diamonds and the gentle glow of pink gold, while the deep black of onyx combines with white gold and diamonds. Alongside these dazzling associations of materials, two exceptional models are adorned with lapis lazuli and two others with rock crystal, in homage to the beauty of the stones that have embellished the collection throughout its history. “Created by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1968, in keeping with its tradition of excellence and savoir-faire, the Alhambra long necklace captured the spirit of the age and introduced new ways of wearing jewels in everyday life. Fifty years later, it stands as a reference that has profoundly influenced the history of jewelry.” Nicolas Bos, President and CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels.

Corum in Rome La Dolce Vita Returns to Watchmaking Corum has listened to collectors and is bringing back Romvlvs, it’s most Italian of creations, in a very limited edition. All the charms of this feisty piece, from its movement to its retrograde calendar, are featured in a new, light and elegant presentation. It was created by accident. In 1966, when Corum received the dials for its new creation Romvlvs in the run-up to the BaselWorld show, the hour markers were missing. The supplier had forgotten to add them. René Bannwart, who had founded the company eleven years earlier, decided to go ahead with the Basel launch anyway. As an emergency measure, he had the hour markers engraved directly on the bezel. Thus the Romvlvs was born, and it would go on to become one of the brand’s greatest successes. This ode to creativity resonates today more than ever at Corum. Frustrated by life’s ups and downs? Does the watch you’re dreaming of not exist? Invent it! Giving life to one’s desires is central to Corum, where the guiding ethos is: “Craft Your Dreams”. This call to creativity can still be heard today in every piece that Corum makes. The new Romvlvs is no exception. the talk - page 68

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Pirelli SOTTOZERO warms up the sub zero snowscape The bite of icy air, the crunch of tires on hard-packed snow and the thrill of truly money can’t buy experiences was the exhilarating setting for the adrenalin-packed recent launch of the titanium-studded Excalibur Spider Pirelli SOTTOZERO™ at the Lamborghini Winter Accademia in Livigno, Italy. Taking exciting high-octane exploits to unprecedented new levels and inspired by the avant-garde designs and technical mastery of both its partners – tire legend Pirelli on the one hand, and Lamborghini Squadra Corse on the other – Roger Dubuis has been offering red-hot performances in super-cold conditions this year. Irresistible mutual attraction was the spark of the relationships Roger Dubuis – a brand with performance engraved in its very DNA – has ignited with Pirelli and Lamborghini Squadra Corse. All share common values encapsulating a radical R&D vision, the same flair for disruptive designs, superlative technical engineering, an attitude in sync with some of the most demanding clients the world has to offer, and extreme aesthetics. Aside from the iconic Roger Dubuis skeleton double flying tourbillon, the unequivocal focus of the 47 mm Excalibur Spider Pirelli SOTTOZERO™ comes down to the latter. It is inspired by Pirelli’s legendary SOTTOZERO™ winter tires, which were the protagonists of the Lamborghini Winter Accademia. the talk - page 69

Oris

Source of Life Limited Edition Oris continues its mission to bring change for the better with a limited edition watch that celebrates water – the source of life. Despite growing awareness and the efforts of government and international nonprofit organizations, the world’s water continues to come under threat because of carelessness, neglect and waste. Pollution levels are rising – and something must be done. Oris is proud to introduce the Source of Life Limited Edition, a philosophical watch inspired by the River Rhine that highlights the plight of the world’s water sources and marks a new chapter in Oris’s mission to bring change for the better. The new watch is based on the stylish Oris Aquis diver’s watch, one of the independent Swiss company’s signature designs. In keeping with Oris’s philosophy to ‘Go your own way’, every model in the line combines innovation, highperformance and high-quality Swiss design and engineering with price points that make sense in the real world. The Oris Source of Life Limited Edition picks up on that theme, and also recognizes the role water plays in feeding, sustaining and connecting life. It focuses on the course of the River Rhine, chosen because it runs close to the village of Hölstein where Oris has been based since 1904, and because the Orisbach, a nearby brook from which the company takes its name, feeds into it. the talk - page 70

TAG Heuer

Heritage Autavia Calibre Heuer 02 In 1933, Heuer designed the first dash counter for racing cars and aircraft: The Autavia chronograph. The name was a contraction of AUTomobile and AVIAtion - as ingenious an invention as the model’s timekeeping functions. Three decades later, in 1962, Jack Heuer, the fourth generation head of the company, created his first wrist sports chronograph. Its innovative signature: a rotating bezel. The Autavia name was reborn with this new, complete and extensive range. In the catalogue until 1986, its numerous executions were extremely successful, remaining to this day among the most sought-after collector’s chronographs. This new reissue is both modern and faithful to its roots, capturing the spirit of golden age motor racing. More imposing than its ancestor — 42 mm in diameter compared to 39 in the 1960s — with a 12-hour graduated bezel and a new Heuer-02 calibre proprietary chronograph movement, the latest generation Autavia carries the DNA and aesthetic codes of the original, updated for today’s market. Its functions are tailored to modern requirements: a self-winding calibre, power reserve of 80 hours, and date at 6 o’clock, and water resistance to 100 meters. In black aluminum, the bidirectional notched bezel encircles a silver dial with three black snailed counters in an optimal layout. The legible, balanced display with steel-coated hands and applique indexes, is complemented by the beige Super-LumiNova®. This limited edition stylish collector’s piece is not only steeped in history and heritage, but is a gift he will one day be proud to pass down from one generation to the next, making it the ideal long-lasting token of your love this Father’s Day. the talk - page 73

The lacquered top ring highlights once more its exclusive design. The 24 mm-diameter case version is available either in black or white with a double-tour studded strap, or in three gold colors with a fine bangle bracelet. The 30mm-diameter case version is bolder; available in a total look blue or black with two rows of studs on the strap. Completing the collection is the IP gold version with a red strap.

Ulysse Nardin’s links to the sea run deep. A recognized pioneer of watchmaking innovation since 1846, the Manufacture’s early renown was built on the peerless precision and reliability of its marine chronometers – essential navigational instruments that helped seafarers determine longitude by means of celestial navigation. The Manufacture is equally renowned for what it has achieved underwater, with its solidly built and unabashedly masculine Diver collection. Like its immediate predecessor, the Diver Deep Dive is powered by the inhouse caliber UN-320, which has a patented silicium lever and escape wheel configuration. Eid: Joy, Happiness, and a Red Lip Celebrations and festive occasions are a perfect time to glam up and bring out that red lip. We’ve got only a few days left till its Eid, everyone is busy, and we can barely put a sheet mask on. So many products so little time! With so many to try, we’ve narrowed it down to a few for your perfect Eid look. First, moisturize and apply sunscreen as most of us will be out really early in the morning. A good primer is a must to make sure your makeup lasts all day. After applying the primer, go for a good long lasting moisturizing foundation and a creamy concealer, avoid cakey formulas as it’s hot outside. For your lids, apply a creamy or powder shadow, something light and sparkly on the lids, and a darker color on the crease. After a bit of bronzing up the face and fixing the brows comes our favorite part… highlighter! Highlight the high points of your face with liquid highlighter, and then set it with a powder one. Spray on setting spray, keep spraying until you feel drowned in it (not kidding). Then apply your lashes or mascara depending on which you would like to go for. Oh wait, our red lip! Apply your lip liner properly to avoid incidents during the day where your lipsticks reach your chin while you’re trying to bite on that donut (true story). Add your perfect red lipstick and spray your face one more time with that setting spray, you’re good to go!

Gold in the H’air’ With so many hair trends there are a few that make us stop and do a double take. The gold foil leaves are one of them! We’ve been seeing a lot of that the past few months but since its Ramadan and almost Eid, let’s dig a little deeper and see what salons have in store for us. Whether you’re looking for a “Ghabga” look or something cute and simple for a small gathering, we’ve got you covered. Firstly, gold leaves can be added to any type of braid as long as the hair is slicked back. Go for a tight French/Dutch braid with gold foil leaves on the sides. Another option would be a double Dutch braid with gold foil leaves between the braids. If you’re more of a bun or ponytail kind of gal, opt for the same slicked back approach and either have the foils on the sides or decorate the bun with it. Finally, for us girls who like to let our hair down every once in a while, go for a simple blow dry or curl your hair. Then follow the same steps, slick back, add the foils, and voila!

beauty - interview

When did you start your career as a makeup artist, and how did you start? I got into makeup about ten years ago, I started to study cosmetology and beauty therapy. With makeup I just learned the basics, I was self-taught as I never attended a makeup school. I basically started in the retail environment for makeup brands. I slowly built my skills and worked my way into the fashion industry. When I started working with different designers I had a more open vision of what beauty is and how it was defined. After that, I left to London about five years ago and it has been a turning point in my life. When did you start working with NARS cosmetics? At NARS it has been over three years now, continuously travelling the world and sharing beauty conversation with you guys. It is a beautiful journey that I am on. What is your favorite NARS product? Which do you use on a daily basis? I am a makeup lover. Some people have habits and they stick to that, I’m not like that, I love experimenting. I am really moody when it comes to makeup, I’m also very seasonal. The staple products from NARS that are always with me are: The Copacabana multiple stick, it’s the perfect ivory highlight glow. Another is the Audacious volumizing mascara, and of course a matte red lipstick. What 2018 beauty trends do you see sticking around long term? Definitely moving forward, everything we see backstage is the same, which is raw skin. By raw skin, we mean no-makeup makeup. The trend is to wear makeup where you actually need to not overdo it. Glowy, beautiful, raw skin. What do you strive to make a woman feel as a makeup artist? My goal when I’m working with someone is to make her feel as the best version of herself. What I mean by that is not necessarily overdoing the makeup, I like to respect who she is as a person. It can be about understanding the authenticity and bringing out all the beauty out with makeup. How do you prep dry and oily skin before foundation? I use oils for everyone, even oily skin. Oil is what your skin recognizes the most, there’s a beautiful selection of them in NARS’ skincare line. Oils produced by your skin are different than the ones in products so using them on oily skin can also be beneficial. If you choose the right oils, your skin would look great no matter what. A lot of toner is essential for the skin before makeup application as well. Skincare is a major game changer when it comes to prepping. What’s the best makeup routine to go by? That’s a very individual thing, but for me, my skincare is essential and a lot of highlighter. I always want to feel fresh as I travel a lot, I use a lot of concealers, a bit of mascara, and lip balm or something very sheer on the lips. What works for everyone is of course taking care of your skin and from there everything comes beautifully. It all depends on how you perceive beauty.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Spring Summer 2018 Fashion Collection: Somewhere Marc’s inspiration for the collection came during the last few months while friends vacationed, they took a holiday in their heads and went somewhere – twisting fantasy into reality through exaggerated, decadent and exotic sportswear silhouettes. This collection is the remaining of seasons past somewhere beyond the urban landscape of New York City. For the Marc Jacobs Beauty Spring/Summer 2018 beauty look, lead Makeup Artist Diane Kendal created a strong ‘Blacquer eye’ which featured layered black formulas in different variations of a winged eye, based on individual eye shape. The rest of the look focused on fresh, luminous skin and natural, nude lips to complement the clothing and hair looks this season. Marc Jacobs considers makeup and nails to be essential components of great style. For this season’s nail look, lead manicurist Jin Soon Choi created polished fresh manicures and pedicures in a variety of new enamored polish in orange, pink and coral shades, as well as one of Marc’s favorite existing Blacquer shade. For the manicures, in true Marc fashion, the look was perfectly imperfect – mimicking a grown out manicure by starting polish application slightly above the cuticle.

What is your role here at Royale Hayat? I am the Head of the Medical Aestheticians. I treat patients for skin problems such as open pores, scars, tightening, lifting, and utilizing several different kinds of devices and different procedures. Tell us more about the AQUAPURE machine and what it does. The newest machine is the Aquapure, it is a multifunctional facial machine to keep your skin beautiful. It has four types of handpieces and solutions that work effectively to deal with various skin problems. Aquapure can help reduce wrinkles, will give you bright, glowing skin and at the same time, it hydrates the skin. What other machines are available at Royale Hayat and which skin problems do they help treat? We have the HIFU machine, it has three handpieces to use. HIFU as a form of facial treatment employs the use of concentrated ultrasound energy to the face and neck by a handheld device. It works well for tightening and for open pores and scars. We also have the Thermage machine which is an older yet effective machine. The principle behind treatment is to tighten existing collagen and stimulate new collagen growth. Patients usually do it once a year for tightening and brightening the skin to rebuild the collagen and skin elasticity. We also do the basic peels, facials, all these contribute to good skin. With so many products and routines in the market, everyone is confused. What are the basic skincare needs? Daily cleansing is essential. Every day, as soon as you wake up, clean your face with a cleansing gel. Right after, apply moisturizer, and also, essentially, sunblock. You can also apply a face mask once a week. In addition, you can come in once every few weeks for the Aquapure facial treatment or you could also try mesotherapy.

Summer is coming up and lot of people neglect all the advice about avoiding the sun. Can you tell our readers how they can minimize skin damage caused by the sun? If the climate is as hot as Kuwait, avoid the sun at the peak hours from 12-3 pm. Also, keep applying and re-applying sun protection. Sun protection is recommended under all conditions, in general, if you are going to be out in the sun. Try to wear a hat to cover your face. After being out in the sun over long periods of time, you can try the mesotherapy treatment or Aquapure to hydrate and cleanse the skin. the talk - page 103

Detox Detox is a word people thrown around casually without actually knowing what it actually means and what the purpose of it is. The process of detoxification is meant to rest your organs, stimulate your liver to release toxins from your body, restore your skin and organs to their best ability, improve blood circulation, and many other purposes as well. However, it’s not just a cup of green juice away. Here are a few tips on how you can detoxify your body. Firstly, you have to eliminate coffee, cigarettes, saturated fats, unnatural sugars, and anything that is hard for your body to digest easily. The most popular cleanses are juice cleanses but it is not meant for weight loss as some people might mistake it for. Some lifestyle changes can keep your body healthy, without needing regular detoxing. For example, introduce a lot of fiber into your diet. Drink natural herbal teas, and take your supplements. Also, the most obvious, drink a lot of water!

Sundus Hamza Abbas

The Ultimate Feminist Role Model Sundus Hamza Abbas is a role model for many women in the region. Why you might ask? Her involvement in human rights and women’s rights campaigns in the region have made her one of the most influential people in the country. Having worked in I.T for many years, her life changing decision was to embark on another career path in helping others. Sundus tells us all about her past, beginnings, and how she feels about current situations in the region.

About Sundus “Multi-tasking and juggling can take us just so far.” Sundus tells us when we ask how she does it all! “We are lucky in this region because of the support that we have. Without some kind of backup, it is not possible to simultaneously combine and optimally perform the role of mother, homemaker, and wife with a full time professional career easily or conveniently.” Men do shoulder some of the burden at times, but women are doing most of the work with respect to the children and the homemaking. When Sundus was a young girl, she thought she had it all figured out. She chose a job that was more realistic and can fit the bill, she had worked in the field of IT for 20 years. Later on she rediscovered what she should actually be doing, and that had introduced renewed energy back into her life. Her work is built around her passion to help people, and now she does that on a daily basis with Abolish153 and Eithar. With some fine-tuning, Sundus believes that everyone can find the “buried treasure” she calls it, in a second career path that nurtures their primary passion. “If there is a magic formula for happiness, it lies deep within our own blueprint of ourselves. Each woman is unique, and each defines success and happiness on her own terms.” Sundus’s Beginnings Sundus beautifully played the role of a guardian, since her early years; she is a twin and the need to protect her sister under all circumstances drove her to excel in this role. Sundus has evolved a great deal, no doubt, but it is this drive to excel, to protect, to stand up for those she loves, that continues to shape her future. During the invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Sundus fled to London with her family, however, she refused to stay idle and joined the “Free Kuwait Campaign”, becoming one of the group’s official spokesperson, spreading awareness of the dire situation of her beloved country and seeking immediate intervention that would help spare innocent civilians from harm. After the Liberation of Kuwait, Sundus came back as part of the Red Crescent Rescue Team. She chose to work with the Social Care Center to help out with the Core of Engineers, moved by their relentless efforts to especially help the elderly, the young ones and the disabled. “I knew that their job was to help rebuild Kuwait’s infrastructure, but their unwavering support and assistance to all, with total impartiality and neutrality became my inspiration. I learnt then that humanitarian actions must be independent of political, economic, military or other objectives.” What drives you? Equality and fairness. Sundus was raised as a person, not as a girl, because her dad had always believed in gender equality. She realized from early on that if parents had the strength to raise daughters more like sons, then it is about time we all have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters. Sundus tells us, “I accept that men and women are different, but only in their nature, we are all graced with the power of strength, subtly, of giving and receiving, we can strive to complement each other in our shared struggle to improve life, taking advantage of our abilities to create a better world for our children.” Gender equality is an important topic to Sundus, she feels as if equality between men and women is still on the wish-list and in 2018 we have achieved very little progress. Women continue to work hard to prove themselves in the face of adversity and hurdles in a male-dominated society. ‘Equality is something that feminists want!’ is the notion in most minds. What women are asking for is to feel heard and respected, to be paid the same wages for the same work. Just because a woman demands the talk - page 122

respect does not mean she objects to being challenged intellectually; she wants a voice and a seat at the table, that doesn’t mean she wants to silence men; she wants to lead, doesn’t mean she wants men to step aside. Co-lead. Co-create. What angers you the most? Injustice. Since the liberation of Kuwait and her commitment towards social justice and antioppressive work, Sundus has witnessed economic inequality by gender and background, inability to accept diversity in the country, oppression to advocacy of marginalized groups, the intolerance and rejection of those who are different from ourselves. “It angers and saddens me;” she says, “Whereas Islam teaches us humility so that we can work in partnership with others.” Sundus has, however, managed to channel these emotions towards working with various social organizations that allowed her to use all the resources available to advance the rights of those who do not share our own identities or backgrounds and to reduce discrimination. She was proud to assist organizations such as “Kuwait Childs Rights Society” to help children who are abused, neglected, and just plain unwanted. KCRS was involved in the passing of the Child Rights Law in May 2015, after 10 years of struggle. Domestic help involvement, and what do you think needs to be changed? To better understand the world we live in, Sundus also wanted to understand the plight of domestic workers who end up in hospitals, prisons and deportation camps, sometimes simply because of the “Iqama” issue. She joined forces with “Bait Al-Khidma” and was stunned having personally worked with foreign domestic workers who experienced exploitative working conditions, unlawfully deprived by employers from basic needs like food, water, sleep, bathroom access, and exposed to physical violence, sexual and verbal abuse, as punishment for minor or non-existent mistakes. The lack of laws further exposes them to human rights abuses and restricts their access to help and support. “This work greatly affected and changed me. We importantly need to change the way we treat workers in our country. Just because they work in our homes doesn’t make them less human. They are not our property, they work just like us, and have rights that need to be enforced.” Women empowerment issues Did you know that an estimated 30% of women in the Middle East and North Africa have experienced physical violence by men at some point in their lives?” Now that hit us hard! “How can one talk about women empowerment when women live under such conditions?” Sundus asks. Society must condemn and criminalize domestic violence. We have to have laws that prohibits all forms of violence against women including physical, psychological, sexual or economic, and enforces either imprisonment or financial penalties. Sundus: Weakness and Strengths She believes her weakness is her attachment to her daughters and her nieces. Sundus tends to hover and manage their activities and social interactions. Whilst her strengths, basically being a supermom! “I am a hands-on working mum and I am proud of it.” She tells us, “As a parent I try to influence my two daughters Noor and Jude by showing them how to be true to themselves and encouraging them not to give up their convictions just to maintain a false harmony with their peers. It’s important to show them that strength comes in being beautiful inside out, by being kind and generous, thoughtful towards others, and willing to give of themselves “Together, we live by example I guess, raising our daughters to believe in the inherent rights of all people, regardless, and to value our precious Earth.” the talk - page 125

Shurooq was warmly welcomed at the graceful and conveniently located lobby of the hotel, boasting a beautiful ambience, styled with eye-catching décor and artistic elements, mixing foundations of regional architecture, elevating the beacons of modern hospitality. A planned itinerary, well thought out, to allow her an experience to take it all in. First was a complete tour of the hotel, experiencing the beauty of the modern spa, witnessing the indoor and outdoor pools; the gym which includes a separate ladies gym and fitness studio with Antigravity classes, equipped with all the modern essentials ready to be used by the guests. As she walked into her expansive room, the diplomatic suite, she was amazed by the sophisticated interior of the space, from the living room to the bedroom. By then Shurooq was ready for dinner at “Dai Forni” - the indoor/outdoor Italian restaurant. Fusion Italian cuisine served at its best, with an incredible rooftop view to top it all off, from the 21st floor. What she especially loved, 2 private dining rooms each for 12 guests you can book that seats up to 12 people for private events. On her second day, Shurooq visited the spa. She couldn’t decide what she loved more, the beautiful walls and interior or the blissful scents that were fuming all around her that gave the place a sensual aroma; with an array of massages and facials to try out, 10 different treatment rooms, a sauna, and that’s just a part of the two floor spa. After the spa comes the beauty salon, of course. A beautiful place, Shurooq said, to get your manicure/pedicure done, if you’re looking for a luxurious experience! Located in the central business district, Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya offers a lavish experience enriching your sense of luxury hospitality, with a lot more to offer. the talk - page 128
