Welcome to the jungle Leopard prints

Animal prints became popular for women in the United States in the late 1960s during the Bohemian movement and without a doubt; this trend was always a debatable topic and still is. We love it, we hate it, we’re indifferent about it, but there are always ways to make animal prints work especially leopard prints. Animal prints are usually expensive and considered exotic hence they are a symbol of wealth and status. Fashion designers such as Anna Sui, Givenchy, Calvin Klein Collection, and Maison Margiela are a few brands that infused leopard prints into their creations presenting them on the runways of fashion week. It may seem a bit hard to actually try to mix and match with leopard prints, should you wear a printed top with printed pants or is that too much? Or should you just carry a leopard printed clutch with a plain outfit or is that too little? My advice is to try a little black dress with a leopard printed coat and see where that takes you. Good leather goods Leather can be translated into so many looks, from daring biker girl to a sophisticated business woman. Leather goods come in so many different styles and products from wallets, bags, electronic covers, to pants, shoes, jackets and dresses. Playing a huge role in both women and men’s lives; here is why we love leather goods. Text by Zeina Al Ayoub

Leather clothing has been around the fashion industry for years now and with each year those pieces are turned into something new and modern making them versatile in every way possible. Usually, in the fashion world, we see trends come and go, but one thing is for sure is that leather goods will never die. With each year that passes by, leather comes in different styles created by legendary designers in the world of fashion. For instance, leather in the 80’s was more put together in a way to make the shoulder look a bit exaggerated, and sometimes designers would incorporate colors into their pieces rather than just creating plain black leather. Nowadays, leather pieces have been upgraded in the most breathtaking way possible by designers such as Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens & Sandy Liang. Whatever the weather may be, there will always be a way to pull off either a leather jacket, or pants, or maybe even a little sundress with leather Valentino pumps and make it look very classic, but leather itself will always be a timeless piece.

Nineties Nostalgia Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymour, Linda Evangelista, what do all of these icons have in common? They were the original 90’s supermodels, the game-changers of the fashion industry. The 90’s; the beginning of fashion trends that will never die out. Here are our top favorite fashion trends of the 90’s that are making a comeback. The slip-dress; living legend Kate Moss first stole our hearts when she wore a plush sheer slip-dress, this iconic moment of the 90’s continued its legacy throughout the modern days of fashion. Now, the slip-dress has become a timeless piece making it a must item every fashion lover should own. It a versatile piece and can be worn in so many different ways, whether it is worn with a plain white tee under it and a pair of heels or with combat boots, which takes us to the next 90’s trend. The combat boots; Tank Girl, the grunge movement and Liv Tyler in her movie Empire Records in 1995; those are a few of the 90’s moments that inspired the combat boots trend that we still see on the streets of fashion around the globe. Created by Dr. Klaus Maertens, Doc Martens caters to people who possess a proud sense of self- expression and attitude which exactly what 90’s was all about. The choker necklace; this trend has come a long way from the 90’s, we all remember those tiny elastic rubber choker necklaces or even the ones you tattoo on, jewelry designers found a way to upgrade this trend turning into a playful yet elegant piece that compliments your look. Jennifer Fisher and Elizabeth and James are a few of the brands that elevated this trend. the talk - page 23

Hedi Slimane From working with Dior and changing the image of men’s fashion, to photographing British rock stars such as Pete Doherty, he even encouraged the legendary Chanel fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld to lose a few pounds in order to purchase his clothes; Hedi Silmane is definitely making the most of his career as a thought-provoking personality in the world of fashion. With an international background of Italian and Tunisian, Slimane was born in Paris in 1968; his mother was from Italy and his father was from Tunisia. He started learning photography before entering his teen years and by the time he was 16 he began creating his own clothes. In 1992 Hedi began working with fashion consultant Jean-Jacques Picart on an exhibition celebrating the centenary of Louis Vuitton’s iconic monogram after studying History of Art at the Ecole du Louvre. The exhibition project invited seven great fashion designers; Vivienne Westwood, Helmut Lang, Isaac Mizrahi, Azzedine Alaia, Manolo Blahnik, Romeo Gigli, and Sybilla. The project was known to be Louis Vuitton’s first step towards the fashion industry. Before being made the men’s artistic director in 1996, Slimane was given the name of menswear director at Yves Saint Laurent. Hedi exceeded the talk - page 26

brilliantly at his profession as a men’s artistic director to the point that Yves Saint Laurent himself attended Hedi’s debut menswear show and applauded proudly from the front row. In January 2000 Hedi presented his collection for Autumn/Winter 20002001 called the Black Tie collection where he pioneered his new skinny silhouette, he then left YSL and even turned down the role of being the creative directorship at Jil Sander which led him to accept his role at Christian Dior’s men’s line. After presenting his line of the skinny silhouette was inspired enough that he was dedicated to shedding a few pounds so he could purchase some of HediSlimane’s designs. Slimane curated the launch of Dior Homme’s first fragrance under his creative control in June 2001. The fragrance was named Higher; he designed the packaging and worked with Richard Avedon on the advertising campaign making it his

goal to merge all the elements with his new vision for the Dior man. In 2002, he was named the CFDA International Designer of the year as the first menswear designer; the award was presented to him by the great David Bowie, which Hedi was a huge fan of. Shortly after receiving the award in 2002, Hedi became connected with countless brilliant musicians such as MickJagger, Jack White, The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand and The Kills where he designed their wardrobes for them to perform in on stages around the world. He also invested in young musicians; especially new British groups allowing them to create original soundtracks for the Dior Homme catwalk shows. With all his successful work in the fashion world, Hedi never lost touch with his passion for photography; he published several books including Berlin, featuring his photographs of the German club scene, Stage, about the rock revival, and London Birth of a Cult, about the British rock star Pete Doherty. Slimane also launched his photographic blog online in 2006

called The Diary where he included pictures of unknown cool kids and also some of the biggest stars in the music industry. After years of presenting his prosperous work to the fashion and Arts industry, HediSlimane found himself linking up with two of his former employees; Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior where they were both seeking a new Creative Director following the exit of John Galliano and Stefano Pilati. Slimane was officially selected to be the creative director at Yves Saint Laurent in March 2012 and eventually changed the label’s name in June 2012 to Saint Laurent Paris. the talk - page 27

fashion - interview

How did you start modeling & How old were you when began down this career path? I was at a mall in Nebraska, I was 12 years old and I was already a size 12 US. I was never considered a straight size skinny model, in fact even on my skinniest day I still don’t know what it feels like to be skinny. While I was in the mall, a random guy came up to me and was like “I have a modeling agency, would you want to become a model?” My dad was with me thank God he was like,“ yeah, we’ll see what happens”. So the next day we went to this hotel room which sounds really creepy but it wasn’t because there were a bunch of other girls there and they kind of groomed us for that New York modeling agencies. From there I signed with Wilhelmina and then ford and at 17 I moved to New York struggled a little bit but I had graduated high school and my parents said “ok you’re going to move to New York and you’re going to make it as a model and if you don’t you’ll have to come back and go to college” I was not the brightest color in the coloring box and I was dyslexic and I had ADHD so I was like determined to do whatever it took to make it and I made it. Within the first year, I started making more money than my mom and dad could’ve imagined for me and I started to create a name for myself. When was the first time you felt the need to be the voice of woman of your size? It wasn’t a definitive moment that happened for me, but growing up I never had a role model in media that actually was somebody who is would say “I’m curvy, I’m thick and I’m proud of it” that they would say “I have cellulite” you know, different things like that. I had my mother, so having grown up in this industry from 12 to 29 I had become the type of woman I want to see in media and then I had young girls coming up to me saying that they now follow me on social media and look up to me and it started to become very imperative to me that I have a voice. It’s just a matter of how I’m going to use it and that’s when I started calling myself a body activist because I had already started going into middle schools and high schools and talking to young girls about self-love, self-care, acceptance, and being different in the fashion industry and what it means to be different in the world, so from there I just said “you know what, I’m not just a model I’m a body activist also” and for me being a body activist is about rights for women of all shapes and sizes and ethnicities and ages, that is really what it boiled down for me even when I went in to do my TED talk, it was something that was such a definitive moment of ‘you are more than a model, you are a business woman’ that is the kind of role model I wish I had while growing up so I really just wanted to create something that young girls could look up to. What is the most important message behind being a body activist? Honestly, it is as simple to say be comfortable and happy and love the skin you are in but that’s probably one of the most difficult things than anybody today can do and I was being honored as glamour woman of the year this past year and there was so many incredible women there. ‘Black lives matters’ were there, there was a woman who had her whole family killed in front of her, and went through so many traumatic experiences in her life and now she’s an activist. All these different types of people growing up and accepting these awards, then I go up there and accept my award and I’m like “here’s to all the big girls, here’s to all the girls in the talk - page 30

their bikinis” and afterwards I felt so stupid, I’m just telling girls that they’re pretty because for me; I get it, I’ve had confidence for so long, I’ve been in a bikini, I’ve shown the world what flaws look like to the public so I asked myself what was truly my purpose after getting this amazing award which was such an honor. After that, I went to the dinner and had an old white woman, a young black woman, and a middle-aged Asian woman, three completely different women coming up to me to say ‘I had trouble with my weight for so long, so thank you for saying that” or “I never would have had confidence if it weren’t for you” so in that moment I really felt like I was doing something. So when it boils down to what is the message of a body activist; it’s so easy to say love the skin you are in but it’s actually so much harder to live that life so the more I preach it and the more I give my stories, my truths and the issues that I’ve been through with my body and the fashion industry, the more people will feel comfortable in their skin. What are a few advices you could give to women who are too afraid to wear a tube dress or a swimsuit? Confidence does not come over tonight and you have to keep reminding women all the time, they think that they can just wake up and be like ok I got it today, but that’s not the case. I even struggle sometimes, I will wake up having not worked out for weeks and being in Italy eating pasta every single day and thinking “oh God, now I’ll have to wear two spanx today instead of one” so everybody is different and if you could just remind yourself that confidence comes and goes but at the end of the day it is how you treat yourself and how are you speaking to yourself, then that is what matters. What are the positives changes you saw in the fashion industry? Well fashion has always been a place for you to really be yourself and even if it’s not in front of the cameras, it is behind the cameras, all the weird kids that aren’t accepted in High School; that’s where they can be accepted. You think a little differently, you look a little different, there are different takes on life and fashion looks. Now fashion isn’t just accepting you behind the camera, it’s also accepting you in front of the camera. being a girl who hasn’t always had the ideal body and being put on the cover of sports illustrated and vogue magazine, it’s a breath of fresh air not only because it is me but because it has never been done before. I think people have been waiting and kind of anticipating something so big, but now, it is becoming the norm, it’s like we’re going to constantly say “the first the first” but then come next year there’s not going to be any first, and you’re going to continue seeing more and more of us. Do you have a routine to maintain your body? I wish I had stability in my life but I do work out even though I don’t do it every day, it is not like my religion for me, I mean if I worked out every single day I probably wouldn’t have time to build a brand, I just don’t make the time to do it every single day. I don’t know, I’ve had weeks where I would work out every single day, but then I would have weeks where I haven’t worked out, so it’s just really about my schedule because I am in a different time zone every week pretty much.

Talk us through your collaboration with Marina Rinaldi Marina Rinaldi is, first of all, the only High end luxury plus size brand and I am saying that because there aren’t any others, you can get a mainstream fashion for plus size you can get something that is fast fashion those things are becoming more and more easier to get for curvy women, but when it comes to luxury and quality and fit, you don’t find those things except from Marina. I’ve just been having a great time too because I am not just coming in as a model, I am coming in as an Ambassador so I’ve been able to voice my opinion about the direction of where I’ve seen the industry going and where I feel that Marina Rinaldi can also join in. it’s really been a true collaboration and not something where I’m just coming in and being the face of, it’s also a brand that I believe in. from cuts to a variety material, what are the details in the collection you would want women to focus on? The silk, patterns and ease. I think those three things really make up the collection. The campaign’s hashtag is #women are the future; can you tell us more about the message behind this hashtag? I think this kind of happened before the elections and just like everybody else, we were hoping for a different movement in America, but with that I think what’s happening in America really brought focus on women and what they want and how we build something for America together. Although Marina Rinaldi is worldwide, being an American woman I see that the hashtag Women Are the Future is that the more that we focus on each other and the more that we focus on the differences that we had and how we can actually come together every day is what actually is going to be great for our future and we will be less competitive and demeaning towards each other and much more ‘cheerleaders’ even when we come from every walk of life. What other barriers would you like to break in 2017? There is so many that is being broken as we speak, but I think the biggest thing that I want to see is that the body conversation comes to an end and that it starts to become the new norm. I know that I am a trailblazer in my field, first of so many! but what’s the most important thing we all get, is that we don’t have to talk about the number inside of a woman’s pants, or dress and that we can just move on and see what her focus is beyond her shape and the shape of the people around her. That is my hope that is what I see for the future.

fashion - interview

What is your earliest fashion memory? My earliest fashion memory is clomping around in my aunt’s heels while visiting her in Miami. I was probably around two years old and apparently insisted on wearing them absolutely everywhere the entire trip. Having gone through so many outfits in your career, which have been your most memorable and why? Recently I wore a MiuMiu dress to the Venice Film Festival. It looked like a mermaid’s tail, and it was truly my dream dress. I felt absolutely magical in it and taking it off was really hard. That dress, combined with such a glamorous location, was a very special moment for me. And what is your earliest red carpet memory—do you remember what you wore? Do you ever look back and cringe or is there more a sense of nostalgia? My first red carpet memory is the ‘I am Sam’ premiere. It was my first film. I wore a satin champagne colored dress with capped sleeves. I had a purse that was black patent and shaped like a present, which I thought, was very chic. I am sure I still have it somewhere. I do not really look back and cringe too much, definitely more of a warm nostalgia. How would you put your personal aesthetic into words? I do not know if I can actually. It really changes all the time. I think I usually have a vibe in mind when I am getting ready and try to execute that as best as I can. I am more traditional than not, but I also like to surprise people, so I try to throw something untraditional into my wardrobe just to keep people on their toes! Are you meticulous about organizing your closet or is it more of a floordrobe situation? I am more on the meticulous side, but I must confess it could be more organized in there at the moment… What are the go-to shoes in your wardrobe and why? Are you more of a flats or heels girl? I am more a flats girl when I am in New York because there is so much walking involved when you live in the city. There is a grounded agility that a flat can bring that just cannot be accomplished in heels, no matter how well you walk in them! But with that being said, I love heels of all kinds. Uber or subway? And which shoes help you make your NYC lifestyle easier? Subway! Taxis! Walking! I use it all! Which areas of New York do you love? Are you more of an uptown or downtown woman? Do you have any favorite restaurants or spots you share with friends when they come in from out of town? I am most certainly a downtown girl. I love Nolita, the East Village, and the Lower East Side. From your shoot with Jimmy Choo, which were your favorite shoes and why? There was a pristine white sneaker that I absolutely adored. Very practical, and I love a slightly dirty white sneaker so I wouldn’t mind if the city stuck to them after a while. There was also a beautiful strappy heel with metallic purples and greens. The straps were like the vines of the flower that unfolded across the toes. Do you have any poignant memories about wearing Jimmy Choo either on or off the red carpet? What does the brand stand for to you? To me, the brand is absolutely iconic. I have worn Jimmy Choo’s too many times to count, because they are able to make a statement, but also seamlessly fit with many different looks. The Jimmy Choo collection is inspired by the beauty of nature—are you inspired by the outdoors? Do you get out of the city to be amongst nature often? Is it something that’s important to you and if so where do you like to go? What’s your favorite flower? I would question anyone who said that nature was not important to them! I do not get out into it as often as I would like, but I daydream about all the places I want to visit when I have time! One of my favorite places I have ever been being Tulum. There are the most beautiful beaches, as well as jungles that are transfixing. My favorite flower is a peony. the talk - page 36

How does a typical Sunday run at your home? Depends on what happened Saturday night haha! Sunday is always a down day for me. Whether friends come over or I have some alone time, there is nothing major ever on the books. And what about peers – you’ve taken on a lead and producing role beside Kristen Dunst for her directorial debut The Bell Jar – do you have a supportive network in the industry? Are you ever concerned about being a role model? I have been so lucky to have worked with so many talented and excetional people thus far in my career. So, yes, I think I have a supportive network for sure. As for being a role model, I try to live my life in a way that myself, my family and friends can be proud of. Many of your roles have included physical endurance and are not always in the most glamorous environments—do those challenges appeal to you more than the glossier leading lady roles? I do not think that really has ever made a difference when I have been in the process of choosing a role. I would definitely not mind playing a glamorous role! But there is a sort of adrenaline high that comes with pushing yourself physically for a role that I definitely do enjoy. When it comes to career aspirations what are the most important aspects you look for in projects now? Would you like to do television or theatre? I am about to do a television series for the first time, which is exciting. I am inspired by the subject matter that is being tackled. It is such an incredible opportunity to be able to develop a character over a long period of time. As for theatre, that is something I have yet to do, but absolutely want to. I know that will be a challenge unlike any other, and I am also very excited for that. And outside of your work what do you most aspire to achieve? The basics: being a good person, creating meaningful relationships, enjoying life and not rushing through time. the talk - page 37

The show opened with a group of Neapolitan dancers who adapted Tarantella sounds to breakdance moves. Dressed in their own outfits. The soundtrack was a remix of the classic Tarantella music – a typical street folkloristic music. The collection features all the symbols that are part of our daily life but that also belong to the Tropico Italiano: food, religion, colors, flowers, family, ice creams, pizza, etc.Words that are often linked to the common imaginary of Italy but that are not that obvious after all. It might be familiar images to Italian citizens but are part of an experience for foreigners who travel to Italy and dream of it. Embroidered ‘hotel’ slippers, folkloristic crowns, LED shoes, pizza heels, drum bags, pyjamas with ice cream prints. The irony is all over the collection.Classic pieces have been reinvented: lace tailleurs jacket are placed on top of D&G logo t-shirts and sneakers. Fake t-shirts which you see on Saturday market stall are reprinted with the writing ‘DG la vera copia’ (the true copy) and embroidered. Just like a girl would find a vintage piece in the store and ask the grandmother to elaborate it to make it modern and relevant to her. The idea behind the collection was to narrate the true essence of the Designers and of the brand. To have a more personal approach to fashion where style is what matters because fashion itself is momentary but style remains.

What is the central theme of the Conscious Collection this year? The new collection is created with inspiration from the human senses which is also noticeable in the choice of materials and embellishments. Contemplation has been important and our choice of material and embellishments revolve around not only how they look, but also how they feel and sound. How long does it take to design the Conscious Collection? We have been working with the collection since last spring. The design process doesn’t really differ from other collections. The design process starts off with research for inspiration followed by the funneling down of information required to finalize the theme for the collection.

sustainable fabrics. Our goal is to increase the share of such fabrics every year in our total material use. Conscious products are marked with green hang tags and can always be found in our stores. As the Creative Advisor what to you is the most important element in a collection? As a Creative Advisor, I work closely with the New Development team. We work together on the collections that are at the forefront of our assortment such as Conscious Exclusive or Studio.

It is the sourcing of the materials that takes a little longer, but it is also a very interesting process since the collection is made from sustainable materials and offers the design team an opportunity to experiment with new and interesting sustainable materials.

Why is it important to make fashion accessible to everyone? At H&M we want to make sustainable, good-quality fashion accessible to as many people as possible. We have a passion for fashion – and for our planet and how we affect the world around us. We believe that conscious fashion choices should be available and affordable to everyone – without ever compromising on style. By making conscious choices in each step of the garment’s life – from cotton farms to customers, together we can make a difference.

How are consumers contributing to sustainability when they buy pieces from the H&M Conscious Collection? At H&M, we are constantly on the lookout for innovative materials and processes that can make our products more sustainable. We are committed to showing that sustainable fashion has a place both on the red carpet and as a part of the standard offer in our stores.

Do you think there will ever come a time when 100% of H&M’s fashion will be made using sustainable fabrics? Yes, I do. At H&M Group, we are constantly on the lookout for innovative materials and processes that can make our products more sustainable. A new sustainable material for this year’s collection is Bionic.

Today 26 percent of the materials we use to make our clothes are organic, recycled or from other more

By choosing to work with sustainable fabrics, we make more environmentally friendly choices

available to a larger group of people, help to lift these materials to scale and create demand for further innovation. We are one of the world’s biggest users of organic cotton, recycled polyester, and Lyocell. When it comes to cotton we have set a clear goal that all our cotton should come from sustainable sources latest by 2020. In what way can consumers contribute to H&M’s sustainability movement? There are several things one can do to become a more sustainable consumer. One thing that they can easily do to make a difference is to start handing in old worn-out clothes to our garment collecting initiative. We were the first fashion company to offer garment collection on a global scale. This helps to reduce the quantity of textiles that end up in a landfill, providing a new use for them. Up until today, we have collected over 40,000 tons of garments and textiles in our stores. How you care for your garments is another important aspect. In 2014 we introduced the Clever Care label that can now be found in all H&M products to encourage its customers to follow some very easy steps to reduce their at-home footprint. For example, don’t wash your clothes unnecessarily and lower the washing temperature from 60 to 30, the clothes will be as clean but only use half the energy. Hang-dry your clothes instead of tumble-dry. Do you think sustainable materials are the future of fashion? Yes, definitely. In fact, I think eventually it will become a prerequisite for all fashion brands that want to be relevant in the future.

Natalia Vodianova for H&M Conscious Collection Campaign

Tell us the story behind your favorite piece in the latest collection and what makes it so special? I love the blue brocade jacket. It´s a real statement piece that you can wear in so many different ways, with denim for a casual look or with the black pants with a frill at the bottom for a more sophisticated look. It´s a precious piece I would save in my wardrobe forever. Are recycled fabrics as long lasting as the normal ones? For the recycled materials that we use in our collection, they are as long lasting as any other fabric. It is very important to us that all our products live up to our high-quality demand and we want to make products that have a long life. Our long-term goal is that all fashion should be made from recycled textile fibers. Innovation and new technical solutions are important for the ambition to close the loop and to be able to scale up the use of recycled materials and to incorporate a larger proportion of recycled fibers in new garments. the talk - page 47

fashion - cover interview

How did Boutique N start? Owning my own boutique is a dream come true for me, I would always tell my parents that I wanted to do something in fashion, and I would always go on and on about how there were brands no one was stocking here and how there was a gap in the market for upcoming and emerging designers. I would always talk about how there were people like me who weren’t into what was available in Kuwait at the time and I wanted to be able to fill that gap in. My mother, sister and I decided to take the plunge and start our own boutique. I head the buying and merchandising, where as my mother is in charge of all the finance and management. We work well together and I’m so lucky because we are a great team and totally understand each other. How did you get into retail/fashion? I’ve always been into retail, I love the retail experience and I love shopping. I always used to do shopping research when I’m traveling, I’d make lists of multi brand boutiques and concept stores to visit on my trips, making sure I try to visit them all and I drag everyone with me. I think my friends and family get annoyed with me sometimes, but they come along any way so it works out. I love seeing how every single boutique or concept store is so unique and different and how the owners translate their visions into their businesses. It’s really inspiring. We opened our boutique during my last year of university so I really didn’t know what I was doing, I was young but so eager to learn and 7 years later I’m still learning but I’m still loving it. I’m so thankful to be doing what I love! the talk - page 54

How would you describe the theme of your boutique? We’re a multi-brand boutique hosting a well edited mix of both emerging talent and established designers from all over the world. What are some of the unique brands that you supply from? Some of our more unique brands are up and coming designers, so they’re in the first few seasons, and aren’t too over distributed. We have Beaufille, who is designed by two talented sisters in Canada who are trained craftswomen, one specializing in textiles and the other in jewelry and they design a full collection together. Then there’s Vika Gazinskaya who we started carrying around 4 years ago and we were one of her only 6 stockists in the beginning and I love that we work with her. Her designs are definitely a little more special. Gul Hurgel is also a new designer that is from Turkey who’s a little more unique, she’s in her 3rd season and she makes the best linen summer dresses and destination wear. I also love Dezso by Sara Beltran because her pieces are fun but still chic for the summer and she’s not stocked everywhere. She’s originally Mexican, she lives in the US but makes everything in India, so that mix is amazing and her jewelry is the perfect compliment to a summer wardrobe. Can you share with us some of the reasons why you chose these brands? The most important reason I choose all my brands is because I feel like there’s a gap in the market here and these designers fill this gap. Also, sometimes we find a really amazing new designer that is super talented

and is really creating something unique and original, so we have to have it in store because we know that it will work well for our brand mix as well as for our customer. Is there a specific target market you usually aim for? We’re always aiming to target a fashion forward customer, someone who will understand all our niche brands and believe in the emerging talent. But also, I’m trying constantly to make sure that there is something in our boutique for everyone, the more daring fashion customer or the more classic shopper. Take us through the process of a typical buying trip Before every trip we start scheduling all our appointments and talking to new brands we want to meet and potentially stock in store so when we land we already have about 80% of our trip planned. A day in Paris or New York starts with me checking my mail, making sure we get a good and filling breakfast because there’s never really proper time for lunch! We sometimes end up eating in the car and drinking lots of coffee and tea during our appointments to keep our energy levels up. It’s usually appointment all days till sunset. I wish I could say that my nights are more glamorous, but half my nights are relaxed dinners with friends and the other half is just sitting at the hotel room trying to get all my orders in by the deadlines and room service. Do you have any locally produced garments and jewelry in your store? What are the brands? We work with Opal Jewelry who we

the talk - page 58

really love. The girls behind the brand are so talented and professional. Are there any new brands that you are excited to work with? Our newest brand on the shop floor at the moment is Khaite, and I’m so happy to be stocking her collection in store. Her denim has the best fit and is so on trend. Beaufille is another brand that I’m still really excited about. It’s their second season in store and I’m really loving all the collections. It’s really edgy and chic, and it works for women of all ages. What is one thing you think customers should know about your store that they may not be aware of? We’re passionate about up and coming and emerging designers, so we do a lot of research, and a lot of the time end up carrying designers before they get picked up by the bigger international department stores and websites so it’s really great to watch the brands grow. I also really try to make sure that our buy offers something unique and original, sometimes we have exclusives made for us or we have designers remake things that did really well a few seasons ago so no one feels like they missed out on a really great style. What are a few must-have items right now? Khaite’s Vanessa jeans are a must, in my opinion, they’re skinny and high waist and are super flattering. I also think Attico is the brand of the moment, and their wrap dresses are a must have and they are timeless. Also, I feel like statement earrings are strong this season, so we have a great collection of fun big statement earrings in store from Lizzie Fortunato.

You may think this trend has outlived its life like but think again. Flowers are back with a vengeance, tempting you to look twice. Florals this season are bright and in full holiday mode, leaving you dreaming about that next vacation getaway. Go traditional with a soft, floral pattern in a flattering silhouette or mix it up; throw on a light, hooded parka to add an edge to your floral t-shirt dress, and finish the look with a pair of bright, funky espadrilles. If you’re looking for a more subtle way to inject a dose of flower power into your outfit, you can opt for accenting key pieces, like bomber jackets and cutoff jeans, with patches of floral embroidery. Looking to rock the trend with accessories instead? Visit Alyasra’s stores for an endless array of gorgeous handbags and shoes inspired by this season’s sweetest trend. Update your essential spring pieces with an effortless and contemporary stripe print. Thin vertical stripes are in this season and make a big, figure-flattering impact. Best of all, they’re easy to wear in any style, from flowing maxi dresses to chic silk blazers. If you are in the mood for something a bit more dramatic, don’t shy away from bold prints; instead, use them to make a fashion statement. Nothing says confidence quite like a full patterned look! Tropical patterns and graphic prints have made an especially big impact on the fashion scene. You can find a variety of print-tastic dresses, trousers, shirts and accessories at Alyasra Fashion stores. And it isn’t just about the print this season; ruffles, lace, tulle, and nods to past eras make this springtime’s dresses a touch more romantic than usual. For a bohemian, ethereal look, cover up your party sequined dress with a frilly transparent spring coat for a truly unique look. CHAUMET INSOLENCE THE EXHIBITION “Insolence”, the new High Jewellery and Fine Jewellery collection by Chaumet, has caught the eye of photographer Karen Collins. Hanging from the picture rails of an ephemeral art gallery installed at 12 place Vendôme, Karen Collins’s shots express the femininity and sensuality of the collection. The photographer plays with the theme of “Insolence” as a second nature, in a contemporary reference to the Beaux Arts masters of the 18th century or the great avant-gardists of art photography such as Man Ray and Brassaï. An American living in New York, Karen Collins chose photography after studying French literature. Her collaborations with Numéro, Stiletto or Vogue have contributed to the fashioning of her personal style, capturing moments of intimacy and tactile sensitivity through light and colour. by Karen Collins

THE COLLECTION Seductive hide-and-seek “Insolence” tells the story of a diamond ribbon and a rose gold rope chain that meet to intertwine, tie and untie in a whimsical game of duality. A classic at first glance, this jewellery tale reveals a free-spirit. The bowknot, on the verge of being undone, evokes light-hearted transgressions. Spontaneous and carefree, the “Insolence” collection celebrates a femininity which is sensual, hedonistic, and ready to embrace all of life’s pleasures. Tie, untie me Inspired by the ribbons dear to Queen Marie-Antoinette and the jewelled garlands of the Belle Epoque, Chaumet’s bow-knots have always symbolised the bonds of love and affection in the tradition of sentimental jewellery. The eternal tie between two beings, the knot that is carefully tied and presented to the world claims a pledge of serene love. Supple and nonchalantly woven, it is easily undone in intimacy, with “Insolence”.

Global launch of Conquest V.H.P. A new milestone for quartz technology

The global launch of the new Conquest V.H.P. (Very High Precision) was held at Neuchâtel Observatory, a setting as spectacular as the timepiece itself. In this intimate and informal setting, Mr Walter von Känel, President of Longines, and Mr Juan-Carlos Capelli, Vice-President of Longines and International Marketing Director, accompanied guests on a fascinating journey through the history of Longines and its close relationship with quartz technology, from the very early days right through to the 2017 launch of the new Conquest V.H.P. A temporary museum erected under the Observatory’s glass dome retold the Longines story and the many technical and technological innovations it has achieved during its history. Outside the Observatory, a special interactive space was created where guests were able to take a much closer look at and handle the timepiece, as well as chat to Longines management. All in all, a fitting end to this very special presentation. the talk - page 113

beauty - trend

Looped Arches This beauty trend is definitely something your parents would never in a million years approve it. Rodarte runways are known to be inspired by controversial elements such as the grunge movement, Woodstock 1969 ‘The summer of love’ and much more and we absolutely adore Rodarte for sticking to their guns and redefining the fashion industry into their own words through their looks and designs. Piercings started off as being placed on the ears of girls (also boys) and that was completely normal. As the years went by, piercing a 2nd and 3rd hole on your ears was, and is still considered normal but how far can the piercing trends be pushed until it isn’t defined as normal anymore. From nose, septum, and lips, to necks, and eyebrow piercings, body modification will always be an ongoing debatable topic, some may call it body art and some may call it body mutilation. Fashion week Spring 2015, Rodarte decided to take the eyebrow trend that was first a big hit in the 90’s and amp it up a thousand times higher than ever. The models that walked the runway wore rows of silver rings that curved and matched the shapes of their eyebrow arches and the mastermind behind it all was makeup artist James Kaliardos. It was definitely a jaw-dropping moment and even if this beauty trend isn’t something that is often seen in the normal world, it is still something that is being talked about, even after two years! Mary-Kate Olsen, Gigi Hadid, and Alexa Chung are some of the few celebrities that have truly invested in the meaning of bedhead hair, whether on the red carpet or just roaming the streets of their hometowns, they surely gave us the courage to wear our hairs in the laziest yet stylish way possible. Personally, my favorite bedhead tip is the “wake up and go” or the “shower and sun-dry” method but of course a little sea salt spray is the icing on the cake, but if you are willing to perfect this hairstyle and make it last longer throughout the day, here are some tips and tricks you may find helpful. Towel dry your hair after getting out of the shower, apply serum or sea salt spray from Lush and gently scruff up your locks using your hands while tipping your head upside down, finally, use a diffuser hairdryer to complete the process and there you have it, the perfect imperfect hairstyle. the talk - page 119

You Are What You Absorb We’ve all heard the phrase ‘you are what you eat’. While this holds true, I really think it’s more along the lines of ‘you are what you absorb’. If I can pinpoint one factor for the way I feel these days, it’s down to having a healthier and stronger gut. Maintaining our gut health, or gut bacteria is absolutely critical for the absorption of nutrients from the foods we eat. A poor gut function can lead to numerous issues such as a weak immune system, improper digestion of foods and the production of gasses leading to stomach bloating and discomfort. For a better health and well-being, consider improving your lifestyle and dietary habits that will enhance your gut function and create a healthy and sustainable gut environment. Here are some ideas you can start to have a think about. Text by Faisal Al Shawa

the talk - page 122

Iker Ayestaran illustrator

Probiotics One route to a healthier gut is to supplement with Probiotics. Probiotics are full of live bacteria and yeasts which supply our gut with ‘good’ bacteria. Essentially, this creates a healthy gut environment and improves our digestive system. Eat Clean Eat clean, unprocessed and fermented foods. Avoid any microwaved, shelved and canned foods which typically contain LOADS of sodium, preservatives and artificial flavoring. If you include such ingredients in your diet, you’re calling for trouble! At the same time, consume fermented foods such as pickles, sourdough bread, yogurt, and sauerkraut. I know some of these options don’t sound too appealing, but at least consider yogurt as it is a great source of probiotics! Healthy Fats Consume as many healthy fats as possible. This includes olive oil, avocados, and nuts as well as omega-3s (flax seeds, walnuts, fish, and hemp seeds). Healthy fats can help moderate stomach inflammation. Sleep Lastly, focus on proper sleep quantity and quality. Sleep and other mechanisms of reducing stress (exercise, yoga) can provide a sense of renewal and freshness to our body while controlling gut inflammation. Believe me when I say gut health is EVERYTHING. Take it from someone who has experienced unpleasant stomach issues and was able to turn it around for the better. Your gut health will dictate the way you feel, think and even influence your body composition. Take the matter seriously and start finding suitable ways for you to improve and strengthen your gut function! the talk - page 123

Helena Frankenthaler Born and raised in a wealthy family in Manhattan with two other sisters, Helena’s Parents noticed her artistic talent at such a young age and decided to help her progress her skills by sending her to progressive and experimental schools. At the age of 15, she was attending the Dalton School in New York and began to study under the Mexican painter Rufina Tamayo. A year later she made the decision of becoming an artist; enrolling herself in Bennington College in Vermont where she studied under Paul Feeley. He was fundamental in arranging exhibitions of Abstract Expressionists. She eventually moved back to New York in 1948, and two years later, when she was 19, she organized an exhibition for Bennington alumnae where she met the art critic Clement Greenberg, leading them to start a romantic relationship. This relationship lasted for years; during the course of their relationship Clement introduced Helena to several leading Abstract Expressionists artists. In 1950 Greenberg encouraged Helena to study under the German-born American painter and art teacher and theorist Hans Hofmann. Two years later, 1952, Frankenthaler had her breakthrough year when she returned from her trip from Nova Scotia; creating Mountains and Sea, a revolutionary canvas where she pioneered her “soak-stain” technique. Frankenthaler continued using the innovative method she had established, drawing on her, and main adoration of landscape for inspiration. She met fellow artist Robert Motherwell, a first-generation Abstract Expressionist, in 1957 and in 1958 they began their thirteen-year marriage. They were called “the golden couple” because of their wealthy backgrounds, causing jealousy among poor Abstract Expressionist artists. In the 1960’s Helena revealed her new painting technique in her canvas titled Canyon (1965) where she attained large washes of bright colors in acrylic paintings. Bloomingdale’s Launches in Kuwait We had the pleasure of talking to senior vice president for department stores for Al Tayer, Tanya Atkinson who have been working in retail for almost 30 years. Since working on this project for the past three years, Al Tayer Group has managed to create the perfect structure for Bloomingdale’s that was beneficial to the customers, offering key category leadership and immersive luxury brand experiences. Tanya Atkinson and Al Tayer Group took into consideration what the Kuwaiti costumers wanted and also what they thought was missing in the market and made sure to fill those gaps in. Ferrari – 70 Years at Maranello Anniversary celebrations get underway

On March 12 1947, Enzo Ferrari fired up the 125 S, the first car to bear his name. That test-drive on the streets of Maranello marked the start of modern Ferrari history. The then-modest factory quickly grew into one of the great internationally-renowned Made in Italy icons. Now, exactly 70 years later, on March 12 2017, Ferrari launches its official celebrations for this milestone anniversary.

the talk - page 138

To coincide with the official start of the celebrations and to commemorate the events of 70 years ago, Ferrari is also releasing a special video featuring a re-enactment of the first 12-cylinder to sport the Cavallino Rampante on its bonnet, the 125 S, driving through the factory gates on Via Abetone Inferiore and, in doing so, symbolically passing the baton of the Ferrari legacy to the LaFerrari Aperta. 125 S, the first Ferrari This was the first car to sport the Ferrari badge. Its 12-cylinder engine, vital to powerful performance, was designed by Gioacchino Colombo with Giuseppe Busso and Luigi Bazzi also contributing to the project. On March 12 1947, the 125 S, still an unbodied steel rolling chassis, roared to life for the first time and the great Ferrari adventure began. Two months later, on May 11 1947, the car made its track debut at the Piacenza Circuit. At the wheel of the 125 S (the S referring to its sports car-type bodywork) was Franco Cortese. Enzo Ferrari dubbed this maiden outing as “a promising failure” after the car was forced to pull up with a fuel pump problem whilst leading the race. However, that moment of failure was short-lived as just nine days later on May 20, Franco Cortese drove the 125 S to victory in the Rome Grand Prix, completing the 40 laps of the circuit and the 137 kilometres of the race at an average speed of 88.5 km/h. This was the first of six victories the 125 S delivered in 1947, the most notable of which was the Parma Grand Prix with Tazio Nuvolari doing the driving. LaFerrari Aperta, 70th anniversary icon Technological excellence, performance, style, exclusivity. Ferrari’s unique core values are brilliantly represented by the car launched to mark the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the company. The LaFerrari Aperta is the new limited-edition special series model dedicated to our most loyal clients and also the spider version of the acclaimed LaFerrari supercar. Maranello’s latest supercar effortlessly combines extraordinary performance with the unique exhilaration of open-top driving. It is equipped with the same hybrid power unit as the coupé: an 800 cv 6,262cc V12 engine (specific power output of 128 cv/l, compression ratio 13.5:1) coupled with a 120 kW electric motor for a total power output of a 963 cv.

A “Driven by Emotion” Anniversary In the course of 2017, over 60 nations will host events crafted to treat clients and enthusiasts of the marque to a string of unique experiences as part of the “Driven by Emotion” concept, one of the cornerstones on which the Ferrari story was founded and has flourished. “Driven by Emotion” is a tribute to the importance placed by the Cavallino Rampante on emotion throughout the last 70 years: be it in terms of delivering the most riveting and rewarding driving experience possible, Ferrari’s universally lauded and acknowledged styling, or innovation via the astonishing pioneering technological solutions revealed by each new Maranello model. Thus, March 12 marked the start of the anniversary events with Australasia opening the programme. The LaFerrari Aperta will be present at each stage as the symbol of the 70th anniversary. In the Middle East, the spectacular celebrations will tour through Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Oman, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and India respectively. The series will feature an exhilarating schedule of showroom openings, Gala Dinners, Parades and Exhibitions, as well as positioning the LaFerrari Aperta against some of the world’s most revered architecture, such as the Royal Opera House Musact, the Kuwait Towers and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The anniversary celebrations culminate in Maranello on the weekend of September 9 and 10, but will also be flanked by other initiatives paying homage to Cavallino Rampante history, not least special exhibitions and the first “Cavalcade Classiche”. A special website has been created to flank the celebrations as they unfold throughout the year as well as to introduce the pivotal moments and individuals in the company’s history. The www.ferrari70.com site is now online. the talk - page 139

The GTC4Lusso & The GTC4Lusso T: A contemporary vision of Ferrari’s illustrious four-seater heritage The new Ferrari GTC4Lusso stable is Maranello’s latest interpretation of the four-seater concept, which combines extraordinary performance in all driving conditions with sporty elegance and luxurious comfort for both driver and passengers alike. It follows in the footsteps of the FF, the first ever Ferrari you could drive on rough terrain or take up mountains for a ski trip thanks to its predictive all-wheel drive system, and continues the lineage of Ferrari’s spacious 2+2 models that began with the 1948 166 Inter. Ferrari has updated the grand touring FF with a stunning new interior, sharper exterior styling, improved engine and handling and a brand new name that reflects the luxury that epitomizes Ferraris’ flagship models. Here we take a moment to reflect on the most significant models that have shaped the history of Ferrari’s V12 and V8 engined four-seaters.

the talk - page 140

The 166 Inter was Ferrari’s first ever road-going model and was based on the 166 sports racing models. Typically the most popular coachbuilders of that era, Carrozzeria Touring, produced the majority of the model range, including this, the 166 Inter coupé Touring, which debuted at the 1948 Turin Motor Show. One of just five Ferrari cars sold that year, it was the first ever example of a two-door four-seater and thus the predecessor of today’s GTC4Lusso. Ferrari 166 Inter (1948)

The 250 GT 2+2 was the first fourseater Ferrari to be produced in large numbers. In fact nearly 1000 cars were produced between the model’s launch at Le Mans 24 Hours in June 1960 and the end of 1963. The Pinin Farina-designed car was equipped with the 3-litre version of the V12 producing 240 hp, with the last fifty examples being fitted with 4-litre engines and designated 330 America. Ferrari 250 GT 2+2 (1960)

Characterised by its front-end styling that included large quad headlights emphasized by chrome surrounds, its Pininfarina styling was viewed favourably and was considered to offer substantial improvements over its predecessor. One of the most famous owners of the 330 GT 2+2 coupé was John Lennon of Beatles fame who was bought a model in 1965 by his band mates the day he passed his driving test. The 365 GT 2+2 was presented at the 1967 Paris Motor Show. With its elegant, imposing lines, it was the first Ferrari to feature power steering and air conditioning as standard for the American market. Ferrari 365 GT 2+2 (1967)

The 365 GTC4 was the successor to the 365 GT 2+2. The body style was very different from the models that it replaced: gone were the graceful rounded curves and the elliptical radiator grille, to be replaced by a much more angular wedge design, which was coming into vogue at the time. Ferrari 365 GTC4 (1971)

This was a brand new design from Pininfarina, which faced the task of developing a fast, svelte and elegant 2+2 powered by the classic 4.4-litre VI2 engine that would break with the more classical lines and provide greater rear seat space than that car’s successor. The 365 GT4 2+2 model was announced at the 1972 Paris Salon. Ferrari 365 GT4 2+2 (1972)

The 456 GT took the luxury 2+2 coupÊ theme to new heights and saw Ferrari return to the front-engine concept for the first time since the 1968 365 GTB4. The all-new 65° V12 provided unprecedented flexibility and power Ferrari 456 GT (1992) the talk - page 142

Along with a new name, Ferrari gave the GTC4Lusso updated lines, a new interior, and a touch more horsepower from its V12 engine. The performance displays the thrilling Ferrari soundtrack, with an increased power output from 651 horsepower to 680 ponies. This Italian horsepower allows the GTC4Lusso to reach 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds on the way to its 333 km/h top speed. Importantly, the all-wheel drive Ferrari now has four-wheel steering similar to that found in the F12 TDF. Allowing all four wheels to steer and propel the car forward makes the car turn as fast as it can accelerate. The GTC4Lusso sports the latest evolution of the naturally-aspirated Ferrari GT V12 that melds incredible power with efficiency and provides a soundtrack which is thrilling in performance driving, yet discreet and harmonious in normal touring conditions, whether city, mountain or desert.

Ferrari GTC4Lusso (2016)

Recently Ferrari announced the new Ferrari GTC4Lusso T; the first fourseater in Prancing Horse history to sport a V8 turbo engine, hailing a whole new Ferrari GT concept. The model is aimed at owners seeking a car that is sporty and versatile but also perfect for frequent driving. Ferrari has given the GTC4Lusso T a 3.9-litre V8 turbo, this Italian horsepower allows the GTC4Lusso T to reach 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds on the way to its 320 km/h top speed. The V8 turbo’s signature characteristics suit day-to-day driving in urban contexts: a rich powerful soundtrack at high speeds that becomes more muted at lower speeds,
