Linen please… We entered this millennium with a new found love for the word “organic”. Why does it have to stop at food? When it comes to fabrics, linen is the go-to choice for the environmentally conscious. You ask why? Linen fabric is made from the fibers that grow inside the flax plant, making it the more eco-friendly fabric! Ok, enough science, let’s get back to fashion. Nothing screams ‘breezy’ more than a beautiful, soft linen dress on a hot summer day. Comfort and style all at once. Now that’s a trend we are loving. Let’s not forget though that some linen pieces can crease easily so you have to be smart with your choices. White linen is always the runner-up for summer holiday picks. We recommend soft colors such as baby pink, sky blue, and lavender. Accessorize your look with some bangles or maybe a colorful beach hat. An extra pro-tip would be to not iron your linen pieces way too much; it’s all about the flowy, free, relaxing texture. Text by Rawan Qabazard

Tribaux It comes and it goes, but this trend seems to be sticking around forever and we are surely not giving up on it yet. Tribal prints have always had a special place in our hearts and closets, and it is time to embrace its vibrancy again this season. A bit of an ethnic twist never hurt the runway; oh on the contrary, it boosts a bit of color and life into the collections. Designers such as Veronica Etro, the creative designer of her family’s archetypal fashion dynasty, indicates that it always begins with choosing the fabrics before the designs. Why is that? When your brand focus is patterns and prints you have to see what works before you hit the drawing boards. We are seeing a lot of bead-trimmed kaftans and silk maxi dresses that we cannot wait to play around with. The thing with tribal prints is that you don’t have to go for over-the-top designs, or even accessorize much. The simpler the better, as the piece you are wearing should be the one doing all the talking. Text by Rawan Qabazard

All Iced Up Diamonds really are a girl’s best friend; whoever assumed they should be considered only for jewelry then they have not marveled over the most recent exotic handbags. Be it a Lady Dior or Hermes Kelly Cut Clutch, diamond encrusted metal on handbags is becoming a thing and people are asking for more. Says who? Says Christie’s Auction House.

the talk - page 20

A matte white Himalaya crocodile diamond Birkin (size 30) was recently sold at an auction in Hong Kong for a price just around $380,000! This makes it the most expensive bag ever to be sold at any auction in the world. The 18 karat white gold hardware encrusted with diamonds was and is a piece to talk about. The waiting list for this exclusive and desirable bag is well over a few years, and every year the weight of the gold and the diamonds is increased. People get what they ask for in this industry! Forget about a new diamond necklace, where’s your diamond clasped clutch?

Dolce & Gabbana The Retail Revolution With the opening of the new boutique on Via Montenapoleone in Milan, Dolce & Gabbana announce a global revolution of its own retail network. This marks the end of the concept store philosophy, with one model for the entire world, in favor of a new formula where emotion, dialog, diversity and cultural exchange come together in spaces that are stages, not shops, where experience and storytelling are the protagonists. Milan, Porto Cervo, Capri, Tokyo, St. Barth, London, Brussels, Monte Carlo, Venice, Beijing, Los Angeles, and Dubai: the boutiques in these modern hubs for travel and international shopping will change radically. The idea of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana is to take customers on a Grand Tour, following an ideal path on an imaginary journey where aesthetics and brand values are combined with the unique features, elements of excellence and cultures of each city. “After several years in which we carefully analyzed our sales network and, more generally, the market, we felt the need to end the classic concept store approach. Today’s customers are informed, highly connected and involved daily in real and virtual travels. They want more than just goods -- more than clothes and accessories -- and they long for experiences, elements of excellence, and a narrative. For this reason, we decided to consider our new stores as places of dialogue between our aesthetic and the local cultures. It has been a long, very rewarding and enriching project. This change in strategy and vision ushers in a new evolution for Dolce & Gabbana. the talk - page 24

Each boutique will be one of a kind: a unique stage where the Italian heritage of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana blends with the local cultures and elements of excellence. The idea is to build sets, not just architectural spaces, which place the spectator at the center of a theater, an experience in which he becomes a protagonist and interpreter. From the radical, founding establishment of Milan to the sophisticated, airy holiday mood of Capri; from the ancient, monumental drama of Beijing to the tropical lounge feel of St. Barts; from the kabuki theater in black and white with the imaginary shadows of Sicilian afternoons of Tokyo to the American-style Harry’s Bar of Los Angeles: the Grand Tour of Dolce & Gabbana’s new retail network is a journey where emotion, culture, experience and excellence come together with lightness and theatricality.

Celine FW17 Creative Director Pheobe Philo left us speechless at the Fall Winter 2017 runway. Masculine suits, modern loose-fit outfits, and brown trenches, draped dresses and exotic prints; maintaining the signature style but adding a revolutionary dimension. We’re loving the new modern vibes set ablaze on the runway, the eccentric boots and the wrinkled trench-coats all scream modern aesthetic for the experimental with a desire of self-expression. Large canvas totes are in this season and Celine showed us how well it goes paired with both structured outfits and quirky loose ones too. Text by Rawan Qabazard

Paule Ka:

Fall Winter 2017 Hardly a day goes by without Paule Ka’s Creative Director Alithia Spuri-Zampetti being asked her opinion on fashion. This recurring, legitimate question pushed her to explore the very notion of French style and sparked her desire for a homecoming.

the talk - page 32

the talk - page 33

fashion - feature

Strolling through history in search of the ornamental and the structural, Spuri-Zampetti draws inspiration from the first impression that Paris leaves on any visitor: a marvel of opulent architecture, where past and present live under the golden glow of chandeliers and streetlights. Structure opens the way, with precisely draped coats cocooning the body as an embrace of lush, tactile fabrics. Immaculate white forms a strong base from which classic tweeds and patterned woollens progress to the quiet luxuriance of chinÊ double face. After all, it is the nonchalant drape of a shawl that sparked these trompel’oeil propositions. The richness of the custom designed material bestows a contemporary spin to a faux-classic silhouette: intrinsically Parisian but definitely looking forward. Empowerment is the final stage of the journey. Playing on the idea of hiding in plain sight, the quintessential Parisian rises to any occasion. The curves of Chantilly lace echo the curls of ornate Napoleonic architecture, as she swings into view. Through the use of plissÊ, heritage motifs become graphic slices, and fan out to reveal insertions of unusual materials. Knitted sparkles. Delicate fringing lends movement to glittering jacquards, echoing the playful feathers that have been intermingled in the metallic thread of laces. Gilding the edges or shimmering with every movement, this visible twist on invisibility meshes. Femininity emerges soon after, as the woman abandons her coat to reveal herself, a softer counter-point to style as a structure. Lingerie, as much an art as a craft, opens a dialogue with history by revisiting its vision of the female form. The corset, once used to constrain now becomes playful and liberating in technical materials. Construction is highlighted by the essential nature of the palette, hinting at the toile that perjures their existence. The futurism of molded neoprene meets the luster of velvet on a strict egalitarian footing: romantic meets minimalism and both become effortless.

H&M Studio Womenswear AW17: Urban Sophistication Looking to the creativity and energy of New York City, street meets sophistication for H&M Studio Womenswear AW17. Artful graffiti prints mix effortlessly with menswear checks, while strong tailoring combines with feminine silhouettes for a powerful yet charming vibe. The collection reflects the needs of a modern woman’s wardrobe – sharp outerwear, soft dresses, flattering knits, versatile separates, statement accessories and a refined color palette – but the frequent merging of different fabrics in a garment creates a more graphic structure and a new, fearless attitude. “This collection is all about tailoring, enhancing the female silhouette. While there are ultra-feminine details, we’ve combined them with street or punk influences for a hardedged yet sophisticated result,” says Pernilla Wohlfahrt, H&M’s Head of Design and Creative Director. Some of the pieces include a dark navy and blue jacket, an oversized hooded parka-poncho hybrid with slant pockets, and a gorgeous A-line mini-skirt in burgundy coated wool with contrast stitching and zipped slant pockets.

Alexander Wang - fall 2015 backstage

Wang is a Parsons School of Design graduate, after two years of being there he decided to introduce his own label to the world. His first fashion show was in Fall 2007 in New York Fashion Week. After a couple of years T by Alexander Wang, his second line was launched. 10 years later, his designs are stocked worldwide from Barneys New York to Al Othman Kuwait. His first flagship was in SoHo, Manhattan which was the perfect trendy location for the nature of his designs. In the year 2012, Alexander Wang was named creative director for the French fashion house Balenciaga. After that, in the year 2014, H&M got him to design a collection that was sold worldwide and was a raging success. Alexander Wang’s designs just scream street style! The way he styles the models on the runway is always something critics are talking about, positively of course. The handbag collection in the year 2009 was successful worldwide, every college student had that “Rockie” Satchel dangling from the shoulders or across their bodies walking around campus. Another hit for Wang was the latest sandal in his previous collection; the Amelia Slide Sandal did cause a bit of commotion as fashionistas went crazy looking all over for them. But of course, Wang never lets us down and continued the design in different metallic colors in his next collection! Rose gold? Don’t mind if we do.

Extraordinary Comes To Life:

Cole Haan Fall Campaign Choreographed By Justin Peck, New York City Ballet

the talk - page 46

Cole Haan is teaming up with artists from New York City Ballet for its latest campaign, which debuts the GrandEvølution, GrandMøtion and next generation StudiøGrand collections. The brand’s new “Extraordinary Comes to Life” campaign features dancers from New York City Ballet - this time adding Resident Choreographer and Soloist, Justin Peck, and Principal Dancer, Amar Ramasar, to the roster of long-time brand collaborators Sara Mearns, Megan Fairchild and Gretchen Smith. The brand partnership continues to emphasize the ballet’s unity of athleticism and artistry, as well as the commitment Cole Haan has to designing elegantly innovative footwear and accessories. The campaign was lensed by motion photographer Andrew Eccles, bringing to life the dancers’ movements through a unique open-shutter technique. For every image of the Extraordinary Comes to Life campaign, Justin Peck orchestrated a full movement expressing each dancer’s professional identity, while pulling from the language of his own recent choreography. Peck choreographed each moment to capture the elegance and performance of the new Cole Haan dual-gender GrandEvølution collection, men’s GrandMøtion collection, and women’s StudiøGrand collection. “Every moment in ballet is equally about the moment before and the moment to come. A dancer does not merely kick their leg up or jump. They follow a storyline of movement that includes new heights of physicality and lengths of elegant motion,” says Justin Peck. “These images are about representing that greater story within a single moment.” Offering optimal movement, functionality and elegance, Cole Haan’s new GrandMøtion collection for men and StudiøGrand collection for women, are designed to support an active and multifaceted lifestyle, ideal for running from street-to-studio and everywhere in-between. On the front lines stand two new bags that write their own fashion code. The Pénélope Arty dons an understated medley of metallic, glazed and suede leather for a 3D opart effect, like an artwork by Victor Vasarely. The Effrontée (French for ‘brazen’) really lives up to its name. Breaking free of convention, it delves into a cheeky composition of contrast and negative space as it cuts seductive, arabesque lines. Decidedly modern, graphic, and abstract, optical trends animate the readyto-wear collection. A lambskin coat with metallic sleeves in the Op-Art line covered in mesmerizing stripes. Shifting patterns in the Vibration motif magnified by the intensely plush suede on an ankle-length dress. Lamb’s wool or goat hair lavishly draped on coats and cropped jackets that change it up here and there with light pastels. LONGCHAMP footwear lies at the crossroads of artistry and craftsmanship perhaps seen most prominently in the new Marlène boots. Part calfskin pump, part suede goatskin gaiter – they transform into a chic optical illusion. Every woman is free to fall for a new heeled boot with geometric Pénélope Arty leather patches or the androgynous Effrontée slippers. the talk - page 51

Stacked Simplicity is classy, but then again sometimes overrated perhaps. What’s wrong with having a bit of fun with accessories and jewelry? Kylie Jenner does not seem to mind stacking those eight Cartier Love bracelets, and 5 rings too, and that’s only on a day where she’s dressing down. Whether you prefer jewelry or accessories, gold or diamonds, rings or bracelets, this trend must be incorporated into your style! Changing up outfits sometimes is tiring, accessorizing in a different way might completely change your look. For example, add a couple of gold bangles to brighten up a white dress. Want to show off your latest manicure? Stack those rings up! Try two on one finger, works too. Color, crystals, anything your heart desires. Play around with this trend, let your imagination go wild. However, sometimes too much of something is not a good thing right? Let’s decide to go with one simple rule of taking off an item before you leave the house! Text by Rawan Qabazard

Intra-Matic 68: a retro automatic chronograph by Hamilton

What’s better than a classic reinvented as a limited edition piece? Inspired by the historical Chronograph B of 1968 which is known for its reverse dial (black and white). In 1968 Hamilton presented two new timepieces among others, the Chronograph A with black sub-dials on a white dial, and the Chronograph B with two white sub-dials lying against a black background, creating a “reverse panda” face. This type of dial design was very popular in the 60s and 70s, crossing the ages until this day with perhaps more fans than before. A strong character watch with a clean and monochrome design, and highly valued today by watch collectors. Great attention to detail was a key request for the new Intra-Matic 68 Auto Chrono, and many elements have almost remained untouched. The dial in particular stays true to the “reverse” panda face of the timepiece’s origins, and is circled by a white tachymeter

scale. Black and white seems to be the overall theme of the watch, with the date on a dark background, a snowy white central chronograph seconds hand and black lacquered counter hands. Inside the polished stainless steel case is the automatic H-31 movement and its 60hour power reserve, a technical extension most welcome in today’s busy lives. Additional parts that have been adapted to present taste including a 42mm case which is the current trend with watches. The Intra-Matic 68 Auto Chrono emulates that of its illustrious inspiration with vintage-feel pushers placed on each side of the crowns and the same solid stainless steel case back. This overall retro character and sense of heritage is further accentuated by a domed-shape dial and curved hands. The black calf leather strap is a cut-edge type, which uses the most traditional strap-production techniques, and is gently perforated for a 60’s-style sporty touch. the talk - page 63

The Longines Master Collection invites color onto its dials

As a traditional watchmaking company, Longines has been producing exceptional timepieces since the very beginning. The Longines Master Collection is the perfect contemporary illustration of this concept, as demonstrated by the success of this collection since its launch in 2005; a line that would become its best-selling product. The Longines Master Collection blends classic elegance and excellence, for the greatest pleasure of watchmaking enthusiasts. Today, Longines is presenting new pieces in which colored dials take center stage. These gray and blue models add a new variation to the rich array of models offered in The Longines Master Collection. Right from the start, this range has enjoyed a level of success that has never waned, making it an emblem of the brand’s watchmaking know-how. Over the years, new sizes and sophistications have been added, while the timeless classicism which is the brand’s essential characteristic and which has played a major role in its success worldwide has always been maintained. the talk - page 64

This year, Longines is launching two editions: one in gray and the other in blue. These fashionable chromatic variations are perfectly in line with the classic and understated spirit of this collection. The sunray blue or sunray gray dial shows the hours, minutes and seconds thanks to rhodium-plated hands that stand out subtly. The gray models, as well as the men’s blue model, are available with an alligator watch strap of the same colour as the dial for total harmony. These models of the Longines Master Collection come in several diameters, so that men and women can find the watch best suited to their wrist. The clear underside of the steel case allows one to admire the scintillating movement of the automatic calibres with which these pieces are fitted. These elegant timepieces are complimented by a steel bracelet or gray or blue alligator watch strap, all fitted with a folding safety clasp.

DS Action Diver Chronograph: Deeply extreme, uniquely automatic

The marine world carries its own special challenges for timepieces. Only a handful are ever truly fit enough to deserve the proud label “diving watch”. Like its predecessors, the latest version of the popular DS Action Diver Chronograph has fully met all ISO 6425 requirements with flying colours and officially boasts a water resistance up to 300 meters. Its ultra-sporty design asserts its place among the greats in nautical timekeeping, a true descendant of the famous CERTINA DS3, chosen in 1970 by the Australian Navy. The dynamic character of the new DS Action Diver Chronograph makes no compromises: it is pure extreme sports – above and below the waterline. The ISO 6425 standard imposes stringent requirements on every timepiece candidate, such as the possibility to pre-set a given span of time, great readability in darkness, excellent accuracy and outstanding shock resistance. This new CERTINA chronograph fulfilled these, and many additional strict requirements. The new DS Action Diver Chronograph features a case with an imposing 45.7mm diameter to maximize underwater clarity. Its impressive unidirectional rotatable bezel, fastened by six screwed-on protective brackets, is made of blue anodized aluminium and used to set the diving time. Its large triangular teeth, to ensure optimal handling even with gloves underwater, is one of the design themes fondly remembered from its forefather, the famous DS-3 of the 1970s. At the time, CERTINA was involved in a number of major scientific underwater expeditions, adding to its great reputation for precision and durability. the talk - page 65

Bleach it! We always hear “blondes have more fun”, but why? Just imagine walking along a sandy beach in your gorgeous beach cover up with a beautiful tan and a bit of highlighter to add some glow. One thing missing there, ‘the blonde hair’. Text by Rawan Qabazard

the talk - page 72

Going lighter used to mean either half head highlights or full head highlights. Nowadays there are so many techniques that you can never say “blonde doesn’t suit me”. The key is to find the technique and shade that best suits you, your hair, and your skin. The blonder the better don’t you think? But sometimes just a hint of it makes all the difference. First of all, ‘highlights’ - as this technique never gets old and delivers the result you want. If you’re planning to go lighter all the way from the roots to the end then either add highlights to your existing base, or if you don’t want to see any strands (although if blended correctly they’d look fab), then go for a new base color over the highlights and watch them appear shower after shower. Another technique is the famous

‘ombré’. By now we all know what the ombré is and how it is done. If you don’t want to touch the roots and just want the tips to be lighter, then this technique is yours to try. However, try to aim for a smooth transition between shades. Next up is the ‘balayage’ which is basically just freehand painting. No foil, no major teasing, just professionally painting the hair. The ‘sombré’ is just a softer version of the ombré. It’s usually not as blonde and light but you can see the difference between the roots and tips. Last but not least, we have the latest technique which is the ‘flamboyage’ which is a combination of the ombré and balayage. Transparent strips are used to get highlights but very blended; to a point where they barely show as highlights, just a subtle nice effect that gives you a refreshing color. the talk - page 73

Sun-kissed What compliments most of your summer wardrobe more than a gorgeous summertime tan? Whether it’s been achieved by a self tanner, spray tanner, UV bed, or even mother nature, it still needs that magic touch to make you glow. After you’ve achieved your tan, you have to keep your skin moisturized to maintain that healthy glow and texture. Once that’s taken care of, well then it’s time to maximize the wow factor of your tan with a few makeup tips and tricks. Text by Rawan Qabazard

the talk - page 74

Remember that you might need to change your foundation shade or tinted moisturizer to match your new skin color, and as always don’t go too dark or too light. Usually you won’t be needing as much coverage as the tan will even put your skin tone, so we recommend a lightweight moisturizing foundation, nothing too powdery. Add bronzer on the hollows of your cheekbones to extenuate them, and then add highlighter to the high points of your face. With highlighter, try a liquid formula first and then set it with a bronzy powder highlighter. For lipstick, red is always a winner with tanned skin but other colors can also look good if you’re going heavy on the eyes. Spray that Fix+ and you’re ready to go!

Inside the World of Apotheca Discovering new secrets, searching for new regimens, and acquiring innovative solutions for every beauty need: this is the foundation of Apotheca’s philosophy. Redefining and bridging the gap between looking and feeling great, Apotheca Beauty has managed to tap into the needs of our regional market with solution-based product lines. The three sisters have opened the doors of Apotheca for us and this is what we found out: Text by Rawan Qabazard

Tell us a bit about your education and work background right up to the birth of Apotheca. Sarah: After high school in Kuwait, I went to Michigan State University, then came back and worked in the Mergers and Acquisitions sector. After 7 years of being in the workforce, I then continued on to gain my MBA from London Business School. While I was getting my MBA, Apotheca was born! Dana: I went to Boulder University in Colorado where I specialized in Management Information Systems. Once I completed, I moved back and worked at HSBC for a few years before we all got together and decided to launch Apotheca. Nora: I got a Finance Degree at the University of Southern California, then moved to New York and worked with the Kuwait Investment Authority for a few years. During the end of my stay there, Apotheca was launched, and I moved back to Kuwait soon after. How did you decide to venture into the beauty industry? We first stumbled across the beauty industry and distribution through a close connection in Los Angeles. A famous dermatologist wanted to distribute his products in Kuwait and asked us to help him do so. We then spent a couple of months studying the market, and although the opportunity never materialized, we realized a serious gap in the market for premium, niche beauty brands. That was enough to let us know we had a serious business opportunity on our hands, and we then moved forward. The goal has been to bring niche, specialty brands to consumers in the region and offer more variety than the mainstream brands that have been available for years. What about this industry do each of you relate to, or are most passionate about? Sarah: Working up to partnering with a brand is absolutely exciting – but watching the roll-out and successful implementation in the region is my real motivator. Watching the hard-work pay off, and the launch of a brand successfully translate to the customers is our ultimate goal. Dana: I love experimenting and selecting new brands. There’s something about the early phases of just finding something exciting that is quite thrilling. Nora: I find the training of brands with their original staff in their respective countries to be inspirational – you begin to really understand the passion invested into the brand, which pumps me up about translating it into our market. We really do believe in our brands, and making sure that our operations implements that vision is really an exciting part of the job. What is the foundation of Apotheca’s philosophy? The foundation of our philosophy is sourcing effective and specialized beauty solutions. All the brands we work with go through an arduous process of selection, where we analyze their components, how they perform in their home markets, how that might translate in our markets, etc. It is of utmost importance to us that we work with quality brands we believe in and know our customers will find true results with, as well. What are the criteria of the brands carried by Apotheca? Do you look for specific elements? As we continuously reinforce, we are foremost consumers ourselves. All the brands we’ve worked with, all three of us have used, are fans of, and truly believe will translate into the regional market. Specific elements we look for would include ingredients – for example: makeup that is composed mostly of water or other ‘fillers’ we tend to avoid, and prefer those of higher quality. Another important element is that the brand has managed to carve out a niche positioning in its home market. We prefer working with brands who “know themselves,” if you will. They understand the value they bring, what they do best, and regardless of how many product offerings they have, their “base identity” is a classic that few competitors can touch. the talk - page 78

We’ve seen the growth of Apotheca over the past few years. What are your future plans, what should we be expecting? We are excited to launch some brands within the next year, including Dr. Lancer, Eyeko and more. We are as well planning expansion into Morocco and Turkey, which is exciting. We are also finalizing our new retail outlet in Kuwait and launching our E-store! It is noticeable that women in our region care about skincare more now than ever. What have you noticed throughout your journey in the beauty industry in the Middle East, and how has that affected Apotheca? The consumer is far more sophisticated and educated on the benefits of health all around – including diet and skincare. Often, customers are already aware of their skin challenges, and proactive. They also understand that beauty is an extension of your health, therefore they are ready to invest in quality and effective products. The way this has affected us has been in our selection process. We are always looking to meet their demands and fill the gap in the market for niche and effective beauty products. We love seeing siblings working together on something they are passionate about. How has working alongside your sisters affected how you run things and how do each of you influence your company? We each have entirely different roles. Nora manages operations out of the UAE and is largely focused on organic growth into particular retail outlets, and making sure the fit matches each particular brand. Dana focuses more on the operations of Kuwait, as well as the retail side of the Apotheca business, and helping to grow that aspect. Sarah is entirely focused on the corporate side of the business, and the inorganic growth, as well as the financials. Sarah: I could only have imagined working with my sisters. Not only because I value working closely with family, but furthermore, because my sisters are smart – I value their input and value-added as professionals as well. We definitely don’t know when to draw the line. We talk about work always and it’s hard to unplug, and go back to just relaxing and hanging out. Dana: It has been an adventure! One of the most exciting ones of my life. I have loved every moment of it – the ups and the downs. It has been a great learning experience, and I wouldn’t have chosen to share it with anyone other than my sisters. Its difficult separating our working life from our home life, but we’ve gotten much better at it. We’ve been in the business for 4-5 years now so we’ve definitely learnt to separate our personal & professional lives as well as learnt boundaries and how to work better with each other. Nora: We started developing Apotheca in 2008! Prior to 2008 I cannot say that I would have specifically imagined all three of us working together. However, when the idea of Apotheca came to mind, the process of working together was natural to us. We all had a passion for beauty, and throughout our lives would constantly share discoveries of various beauty trends. We also each had a background in finance, yet we had very different professional experiences that allowed us to bring unique perspectives to the Company.

Let’s talk about your passion… Define beauty Sarah: Beauty is self-interpreted. It is entirely in the eye of the beholder. Dana: Beauty is confidence – regardless of what you apply or wear, being confident is always beautiful. Nora: Beauty is indefinable – it’s ever-evolving, and dependent on one’s own interpretation of themselves. Describe each of your beauty regimes. Sarah: I’m very militant about my beauty routine – I’m a die-hard Sarah Chapman fan, and wake up to always start with her Ultimate Cleanse, followed by the Morning Facial, or Dynamic Defense with SPF. By the end of the day, I’m religious about removing every iota of makeup, then applying Overnight Facial. Recently, I use sheet masks anywhere from 3 to 5 times a week. With makeup, it depends – I like to apply a little bronzer (I use the Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit – Sundipped), some mascara and Brow Wiz is a must. If I need any concealer, I use Cover FX click-sticks. Dana: I always start with washing my face with the Earth Tu Face facial cleanser. Next I use a cotton pad and tone my cleansed face with diluted apple cider vinegar. Then I use the Sarah Chapman Eye Recovery Cream, followed by the Sarah Chapman Stem Cell Collagen Activator serum. I leave that to soak in my skin for 15 minutes, then add the Sarah Chapman Overnight Facial on top. My makeup routine is very minimal during the week – maybe some concealer, but rarely. During the evening, I love to go with a bold lip and bright eyes. Nora: With skincare, I’m a huge Sarah Chapman fan (as we all are). I use the staple products: Overnight Facial, Rapid Radiance Cleanse, and I love to use the Boosters a couple of times during the week as well. With makeup, I’m super minimal – I’m a huge fan of Ilia, and love their Tinted Moisturizers. I also use Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definers daily. Their new Lip Kit as well is a must as I love to use a burgundy lip color during the evening. Name three products you cannot live without. Sarah: Brow Wiz from Anastasia Beverly Hills, YSL éclat, and Dior Mascara. Dana: My favorite makeup product is a good tinted moisturizer. I love looking a little tanned with a nice glow. I also love a red lip. I think red suits everyone and it brings a nice pop of color to the face. Nora: Brow Definer from Anastasia Beverly Hills, Sarah Chapman Overnight Facial, and Lime Crime liquid lipsticks.

Dr. Reza Nabavian MD We have all heard testimonials of praise and professionalism of the famous Dr. Reza Nabavian and his amazing skills and expertise as a plastic surgeon. Dr. Reza is a well-known renowned Consultant plastic surgeon at the prominent Royale Hayat Hospital. He is also a Consultant at his practice in Santa Monica, California. In addition, he is the Director of Plastic Surgery Training at the University of Southern California. “One of the constant things in my life is movement and travel. Describe your educational and career journeys. I moved to the U.S. to specialize in electrical engineering. Over the course of education while participating in research projects on the development of laser systems that were to be used to scan the human body, I became fascinated with the human anatomy. I then decided to pursue my medical training; later specializing in plastic surgery at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. I soon opened a private practice but also stayed on as a professor at USC as I was very interested in teaching and research. I have gladly been able to maintain these roles productively. As a child I was always good at art and sculpting, and I also enjoyed learning about the human body. I can positively say that my background in engineering has definitely assisted in my skills as a plastic surgeon, as I view things three dimensionally. What do you feel is the most sought-after procedures in the region? Right now I would say Liposuction and fat transfer. We can remove fat from unwanted areas and we can inject that, for instance, to enhance breasts, facial rejuvenation, and hand rejuvenation. We also use the fat for buttock augmentation/brazillian buttlift. Which of the procedures do you consider less invasive? Well, in general, as we are trying to make people look and feel better, we have to offer least invasive procedures with natural results. Sometimes it is possible, and sometimes it is not, but generally our focus is to decrease the amount of cutting and scarring. What procedures do you perform yourself here at Royale Hayat? I perform pretty much a complete range of plastic surgery procedures - liposuction and fat transfer, rhinoplasty, and many different surgeries for those who have undergone major weight loss, for example, to remove excess skin. Also, breast augmentation, lifting, reduction, tummy tuck, and facial rejuvenation. Is there a specific age where a person can turn to surgery? Yes, we want and encourage the patient to make the decision as an adult. There are a couple of instances where younger patients undergo plastic surgery procedures, mainly due to some exceptions; for example, if a young girl has a very deformed nose that affects her lifestyle negatively.

Dr. Reza Nabavian MD Position: Consultant Plastic Surgeon Department: Plastic Surgery Qualifications: American Board of Plastic Surgery Board Certifications: Director of Asthetic Surgery - University of Southern California

What do you recommend women should focus on when they turn to plastic surgery? I think the most important thing is that they have to consider plastic surgery as a journey. There are other aspects of self-improvement before making a start with plastic surgery, such as a better lifestyle, better nutrition, and also a proper support system. All that will help with a better recovery. When it comes to plastic surgery, what are the mistakes and misconceptions people have in our region? One important thing to note is that cosmetic surgery has become a major business. Patients need to be observant, cautious and must research the information available when it comes to the credentials of the doctors they are visiting or the procedures they are seeking. They should realize that there are a lot of new procedures in this industry that are being pushed heavily on social media. Not all of them are safe operations and not all new technologies will survive. Never rush to try something new. the talk - page 85

Are superfoods really Super Foods? Are superfoods really superfoods? The answer is yes – but not all. We’ve all seen the media advertise certain ‘superfoods’ that supposedly are magical. But how many of these foods are actually evidence, science based? Only a handful. Based on my research of superfoods and discussion with other nutrition practitioners, foods like Garlic, Berries, Spirulina and Leafy Greens are actually backed by solid evidence. Let me review some of these superfoods. Text by Faisal Alshawa

Garlic Eating 1-2 cloves of fresh garlic a day can do you wonders. The evidence suggests garlic to improve blood flow, cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Additionally, garlic has anti-oxidant properties that can help fight off cancer. Berries Blueberry, Blackberry, Raspberry, Strawberry and Cranberry – berry awesome! Berries contain a powerful anti-oxidant, Anthocyanin, which can help reduce body inflammation and provide an anti-cancer effect. Spirulina Terrible taste, but powerful effect! Spirulina is quite potent with protein, and similar to berries and garlic, can provide an anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effect. Leafy Greens Leafy greens include, but are not limited to, kale, spinach, broccoli, cabbage and iceberg lettuce. The benefit of leafy greens stems from their nitrate content. Nitrate, also found in beetroot, can increase blood flow by dilating blood vessels. This, in turn, can decrease blood pressure. Consuming other superfoods presented by the media will pose no harm. I just figured I would write this post to separate the wheat from the chaff – the evidence-based from the lunch-box science. the talk - page 86

Garance Vallée, Illustrator, Architect Garance Vallée is an artist who currently lives in Paris. She’s 23 years old and is presently finishing her Master’s degree in architecture. She is pursuing a specialization in scenography to focus on smaller-scale architecture. A childhood surrounded by artistic influences; she grew up spending much time in the painting studio of her father Kriki (kriki. com), immersed between paintings and punk music, Garance began to draw and create objects near him. Her parents raised her and her brother in an arty lifestyle. Her mother, who studied art history, made her work on her culture as much as she could, teaching her to have a thirst of “knowledge” which participates in her creativity today. With a mesh of cultural and art background, an eye for sculpting, an educational background of architecture coupled with the love of ingenuity, Garance’s work speaks structural volumes. art & design - interview

When did you discover your love for art and how long have you been pursuing it? Since I was a kid! I grew up between my father’s artist studio and my mother’s artistic literary world. They are my first sources of inspiration. I owe them this open-mindedness. They are the ones who shaped my artistic eye. I have always drawn and built little objects in my father’s studio. But I have only been showcasing my work for one year, thanks to my fiancé who pushes and encourages me every day. Would you consider it a hobby or a lifestyle? I would say it is definitely a lifestyle. Everything is a creation: walking, eating, talking, and even being. Even if we are not practicing any formal art; the way we perceive things, the way we pay attention and are sensitive about everything; that is what defines us. You begin to notice things around you more absorbedly, be more attentive and sensitive. Wherever I am, I cannot help but take a quick moment to write or scribble down an idea that comes to mind. I spend time around environments and places that inspire me, because I like their ambience, their architecture; even music or fashion can be a source of inspiration. It is a wholesome attitude, an everyday lifestyle. It creates your own artistic personality. I am a very romantic person in my everyday life, and I like my work to reflect that and through my work I want people to feel it too. How would you describe your artistic style? I am passionate about contemporary art, design and architecture. I am continuously inspired by contemporary modernist movements and the young talents of the avantgarde influences. I love working with a lot of different types of materials, I like feeling them, building models, having a real contact with the textures that I use. What excites me most is bringing my drawings to life, to go from 2D to 3D. My drawings are very geometric, probably due to my father’s love for straight lines, as well my architecture studies. But from time to time I like incorporating curves through a feminine figure that represents the women in my life. To me, drawing is like a step towards object design. That is how I currently consider it; as if everything I draw, everything I sketch and model, was destined to be built someday. What differentiates you from other artists in your field? I strive to incorporate everything; I am not locked in one technique or one inspiration currently. To me, experimentation is the key. I love it. Testing methods, the talk - page 92

observing the process, sometimes they do not work, trying, then trying again. At times succeeding with an idea the very first time, and never being able to recreate it again. It is truly the magic of experimentation. Furthermore, in my architecture studies, I am currently receiving training in scenography which has helped me find my way of presenting my world, stage my drawings and objects in my own style, in a way that reflects my visualization of that particular piece(s). Every staging of a drawing becomes an installation in itself. Who is your favorite artist? Family first! It would be shameful not to mention my father Kriki [laughs]! What is your favorite piece of art? I am in love with the work of Meir Eshel, professionally known as Absalon. In his short career he achieved a lot and I admire in particular the “cells” as he calls them. What role does art take in our world nowadays? We cannot live without art. Art has an essential role in our lives, whether we realize it or not. It allows us to escape reality, to look further, to step out and beyond limits, be it our own or of others’. Every kind of music, art, cinema, dancing, painting, and culture in general, they are all instrumental in paving the way to open-mindedness. It allows us to engage and interact, to make things happen as we imagine them to, in our own way. What is your goal as an artist, and what are your future plans? I would not say I have one goal, but many! Experimentation in my work allows me the privilege to redefine art and to give the impossible a chance to survive. Not knowing where the unknown road leads us but we keep trying anyway. However, my guideline is to keep the volume of my work result-oriented. In the near future, I would like to have the space to develop my objects on a large-scale, and finally give life to the reality I imagine in my drawings. For now, it’s probably going to materialize through collaborations with young artisans that I have met... to be continued... What were any issues you faced pursing what you love to do and what piece of advice would you give young artists? Early on I often wondered if I should drop out of school as I did not have enough time to spend on my personal projects in order to start my career. I was afraid I would miss out on

opportunities due to time constraints preparing for this or that examination. But now I can definitely state that education has been the most useful and instrumental in moving forward. I am proud to be an architect, to be able to build something concretely, and it has added a whole new dimension to my work. I am only 23 so it is difficult for me to give advice! I have given myself the means, I am working tirelessly with my education and with my art, and I constantly juggle with everything. I am very determined as I know we all have to struggle in order to attain our goals and to do what we love. I do not want to have any regrets, so I keep trying and completely devote myself to the project at hand. And now a random fun question for our readers! What is your signature coffee drink? I am going to say long coffee but honestly I am more of a tea person [laughs]! One in particular, “Gautama, is my favorite! the talk - page 93

Artist profile: Norah Al Jassar Norah Al Jassar is a 23 year old photographer, videographer and illustrator. She studied English Linguistics & Translation at GUST. Since she was a child she had always been interested in art; she was always surrounded by art supplies and her answer to the usual question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” was… “an artist!” Norah had started with sketching and then switched to painting. She had a graffiti phase, but ended up going back to sketching. In the year 2008, she started to pursue her photography skills by enrolling into different introductory courses. Norah got her first professional camera when she graduated from high school and her love for taking pictures escalated. She had participated in The Birwaz Workshop for two years in 2013 and 2014, and the participants had exhibitions to showcase their work at the end of every workshop. Later in 2014 she decided to give videography a try and she’s been loving it ever since. Norah shot her first video on January 1st, 2015, and uploaded it a day later. And finally, she went back to sketching, painting, as well illustrating last year and has been trying to balance between all three passions at the same time. For Norah, art is a lifestyle. She stated, “Art is everywhere, it’s not something you switch off during your day to day life and switch back on when you have the time for it or feel like it. And for me, being raised around art, it became a part of who I am, as cliché as that sounds, and God knows how much I hate clichés, but that’s true. It affects how I live, how I see things and how I think, it’s not something I do to kill time.” When it comes to photography, Norah likes her pictures symmetrical and sharp. When it comes to videos, she likes timing the clips with the beat of a soundtrack. It’s the technique that differentiates all artists from each other. For her, art is self expression. What does Norah love? Travelling, mountains, sunrises, sunsets, clouds, the moon, the stars, space, sunflowers, daisies and tea. Let us not forget Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night”! Who is Farah Al Babtain? Farah Al Babtain is the creative director of GROUPXEN, a company established in 2005 as a subsidiary of Al Babtain GROUP, a Kuwaiti family business that has been trading for over 60 years. Groupxen includes a spectrum of different companies and brands that address different sectors - including fashion, events, interior design and fitness - but all addressing some aspect of the growing lifestyle market. Which business venture did you start off with, and why was that the path you chose? I started off with design consultancy, because I was mesmerized by the idea that I could create anything from scratch which gave me limitless boundaries that extended into future projects and business ventures. Describe how your lifestyle affects your business. My personal and day to day routine is centered around my fitness and athletic performance which rubs off on SPARK and how it operates. An avid art addict, I always lean towards anything related to the fine arts thus starting The Center of the Arts. Moreover, I am deeply influenced by modern and old Arabia, an orientalist to the core which is conveyed through my designs in MUHRA. Finally, I have a passion for the gypsy and bohemian lifestyle, which is shown through my designs at Luna & The Gypsies. What are some goals that were set and have been achieved? To start a business that caters to promote and nurture the different talents of Kuwaiti youth, we are proud to present a set of competitive athletes that were discovered and fully backed up and sponsored by SPARK. This is an opportunity to give individuals the right environment and training that enables them to lead by example and reach further international presence. Another beautiful goal was presenting our first Kuwaiti ballerina, Yasmine Marafie, who was discovered and fully sponsored at The Center of the Arts. Yasmeen made it to the top 12 in the prestigious YAGP competition in Paris in 2016. Where do you see the Kuwaiti women in the business field nowadays? Kuwaiti women are strong, persistent, and are in control of their lives. There has been a tremendous change in their pattern of life and that has opened up a lot of opportunities for them to tap into different fields of business. I believe that if they work hard and persist, they can definitely reach international levels in any field of their choice.

As for your venture in the fashion industry, describe your two brands and how they are different from each other? My two brands, MUHRA and Luna & The Gypsies, are two very different brands that I equally adore. MUHRA is inspired by my love for traditional Arabian heritage, and it conveys a sense of exclusivity and inclusion for its clients, as each piece is one piece only, never repeated. MUHRA aims to lift the veil on the beauty of Arabian culture, the strength, fierceness and mysterious beauty of Arabian women. It is tailored to a line of exclusive clients that enjoy MUHRA’s exquisite pieces. Luna & The Gypsies on the other hand is a brand that is inspired by my interest in the gypsy and bohemian lifestyle while incorporating trendy modern ideas. The clothing options at Luna & The Gypsies reflect the bohemian and free-spirited lifestyles and includes aspects of the modern day fashion styles. What influences your designs for each of the two brands? MUHRA is influenced by my love for traditional Arabian heritage. Inspiration can come from anywhere: from music, the weather, from a piece of vintage fabric, a poem I heard or simply an Oud excerpt. I am very attached to my Arabian background. I am a loyal Orientalist who is in constant thirst for the magical and intricate inspirations of this land. I believe that Arabs underestimate their culture, and I believe that we have so much to give. There is a lot of beauty in our environment that is covered up, and I want to lift the veil. Luna & The Gypsies on the other hand reflects my fascination with the bohemian lifestyle. It conveys a more laid back, natural and raw sense of living which I adore. When you start sketching, what are the characteristics of the woman wearing a “Muhra” design? Beauty in my eyes is pure strength. Arabian women are known for their fierceness and sharp features. When I start designing a piece I always intend to promote the prestigious elegance and mesmerizing aura that a Muhra client craves.

When opening up the gym “Spark” what was your goal for society? SPARK ATHLETIC was purely my brother, Abdulmohsen’s idea. He was the one involved and presented the concept to motivate and educate Kuwait ‘s society to enjoy and participate in a healthy lifestyle in a place that is based on proper sport science. SPARK ATHLETIC is a platform for those seeking to take their athletic training to new heights under the supervision of highly qualified coaches and within an environment that promotes fitness with state-of-the art machines and equipment to support any athletic goal. SPARK also aims to further the career of Kuwaiti athletes through the sponsorships we offer. How did you come up with the idea for the marathon and how was the feedback from the community? SPARK MARATHON is the biggest sporting event in Kuwait aiming to put our country in the spotlight of international recognition through the standards that we imposed while planning and executing the event. It aimed to raise awareness for Kuwait’s high obesity rate and the general public’s lack of healthy habits and lifestyles. The feedback from the community was more than expected, not only locally, since we had athletes from 52 nationalities flying in to participate. The Center of the Arts, how did you come up with this concept? and why? I have always had a lust for Art and wanted to learn more and and let others explore the different mediums of fine art as well. 1000 square meters dedicated to teach art in all its diversified kinds. Whether its Ballet, music, arts and crafts or dance in all its forms, I have dedicated this space as a platform for artists to share and present their art and express and collaborate as well. What are your future plans? Never ending are those plans! I have Kuwait’s youth amidst my eyes and I constantly search for opportunities to incorporate them within the realm of our business. I live to nurture talent and beauty and I believe this is what keeps us forever engulfed in constant hunger for new and exciting opportunities.
