Letter

letter/ September 1st 2010 seems like yesterday. I still remember how nervous I was on the first day of my first job. I had just graduated from university and joined PH7 and more specifically The Talk team. The Talk looked nothing like it does today. Just like all babies, they start up rough and then blossom into what they are capable of becoming and keep growing and evolving. The Talk represents that to me; my baby. In the span of six years I have seen it grow, evolve, fail, succeed and finally stand strong. I have seen it change in size, look, feel and context just like a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly. It is when a caterpillar feels like it is taking its last breath that it transforms into greatness. The Talk is my caterpillar that lived through its early years and transformed into the beautiful title it is today. Every parent has to let go of their children some day. It is not an easy process but it is a must. They let go when they know their child does not need them anymore and has become capable of greatness on its own. It is time for me to let go of my child. As I write my last letter as a member of The Talk team, mixed emotions of sadness and happiness are flooding through me. As I know that this is definitely not goodbye, it is time to let go. PH7 is not my workplace and The Talk is not my job. PH7 is my home and The Talk is my baby and these facts will never change no matter how far we are from each other or how much we each grow in our lives. Eventually all the roads will lead to home and home is where the heart is. And I left my heart in PH7 with The Talk. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every single one of our readers, because without you we would not have succeeded all this time. Furthermore, I would like to thank all our clients who supported us and saw our vision of improvement and were by our side the whole time; without you we would not be able to evolve and grow. Also, I would like to thank every member from PH7 family of the last six years, whether you are still a member or you have left to grow in your career, whether I worked with you for a year or just a day. I learnt from every single one of you more than you might know. Without you guys I would not be who I am today. You helped me grow and evolve in every aspect of my life. I could not have wished for a better team even if I wanted to. You were there through my ups and downs, through my stress and my calm and pretty much through everything; I love you all more than words can describe. Finally, I would like to thank the person behind all this, the backbone of our family whom kept our workplace a home, Ms. Zeina Mokaddam. You have opened your doors to me when I thought I was ready to take over the world. You taught me the ropes of the working life and taught me how to stand every time I would fall. You supported my growth like it was your own. You were there every time I had a smile on my face or a tear coming down my cheeks. You influenced me to be a hard worker, to not give up on what I believe in and to never take no for an answer. You are my inspiration and you molded me into the best version of myself and for that I am eternally grateful. Thank you all for sharing this experience with me and become part of my life. You have all inspired me throughout these years. As my final letter, I am placing my baby in your hands, please take good care of it. Until we meet again, Hind Nassar

One man. One vision. That’s how it all started.

The Max Mara Group proudly holds the title of Italy’s largest fashion house, thanks to founder Achille Maramotti’s dream of creating a brand synonymous with quality and luxury.

the talk - page 20

This family company has proven itself a power house when it comes to style. After founding the label in 1951, Maramotti’s clothes gained immediate recognition, thanks to his methods of creating more styles, cuts and colours than ever before. This, in turn, allowed him to reach a far wider audience, and within a few short years the brand was opening new lines under the umbrella group of Max Mara. Since its inception, the Max Mara group has expanded its portfolio to 19 womenswear collections to cater for women of all age and shape. Amongst these brands are MaxMara, SportMax, MAX&Co, Weekend by Max Mara, Marella, Marina Rinaldi and Persona. All are available in Kuwait and operated by Alyasra Fashion. Max Mara is not only Italy’s biggest clothing company but is recognized as one of the world’s largest fashion houses. The luxury brand remains at the forefront of fashion, producing beautiful clothing and continuously evolving to meet modern fashion trends. The group is also behind one of fashion’s most decade-transcending garments to ever grace the world of fashion: The Max Mara coat. If there’s one clothing item that has stood the test of time, it’s certainly the iconic 101801 coat, a double-breasted classic camel topper first created in 1981 by French couturier Anne-Marie Beretta. The coat is one of those garments that is instantly recognizable, but manages to remain elegantly understated. With stores operating in more than 105 countries across five continents, it’s plain to see that Maramotti’s vision has truly come into fruition. The Max Mara Fashion Group continues to set trends, expand and dominate the fashion scene. We’ll be taking you through a chronological journey where you will experience a taste of what some of Max Mara Group’s most exciting brands have to offer.

The story of Max Mara begins in the northern Italian city of Reggio Emilia, where an ambitious young Achille Maramotti founded a brand that was destined to evolve into a fashion house empire. To truly understand how Max Mara came to be what it is today, we need to look back to the nineteenth century. Maramotti’s love for tailoring can be traced back to his great grandmother, Marina Rinaldi, who managed a luxurious atelier in the 1800s. This deep rooted passion and skill was passed down to her granddaughter, Giulia Fontanesi Maramotti, who in 1925 started teaching modelling and sewing and published books dedicated to the “theory of cutting”. Maramotti’s love for fashion fueled his desire to produce high-quality women’s clothing. This led to the creation of Max Mara in 1951. The first collection showcased elements which hinted at the special features found in the next productions: clean cuts and sharp lines reinvented with a classic Italian taste. One of Maramotti’s boldest and most rewarding moves was his choice to focus on high-quality outerwear, resulting in the birth of the muchlauded Max Mara coat. These fabulous coats, made by skilled tailors using the best high-quality materials, set the fashion world alight, as it became clear that the Italian brand was a force to be reckoned with. Over time, the brand has come to epitomize womanliness and timeless glamour, characterized by high quality materials, modern design and a tailored style. It’s a happy marriage between modernity and tradition, as well as elegance and simplicity, designed for the contemporary woman with a sophisticated and refined image. You can find the Max Mara boutique at Prestige, The Avenues. the talk - page 21

Max Mara introduced Sportmax in 1969 as a way to target a younger demographic with a different purchasing power from the main line customer. This line was compatible with the more fashion conscious shopper, and was conceived with the idea that women could use the entire line to create a complete wardrobe suitable for all occasions. Sportmax drew its inspiration from the hippest, most forward-looking city of the time, London, and adapted that cool “LondonLook” creativity to the tastes and the style of young, dynamic Italian women looking for something new. The line stood out thanks to a more diversified and experimental range. It was the first example of a coordinated total look wardrobe, which originated from the style of sportswear, a term used to describe everyday outfits put together by mixing and matching separates. This unique approach still continues to leave its bold mark on Sportmax today. The Sportmax collection is available at the Max Mara boutique located at Prestige, The Avenues. the talk - page 22

The creation of Marina Rinaldi, named after the great-grandmother of Max Mara’s founder, Achille Maramotti, was a turning point in the history of fashion. Offering a collection of garments and accessories for women with curves, it took on the much-needed job of addressing the needs of a somewhat neglected female demographic. Since its launch in 1980, Marina Rinaldi is one of the most iconic brands pioneering and meeting the needs of the plus size industry. The fashion house has maintained the key aptitudes passed from one generation to the next: a profound love and passion for tailoring and dress making. The goal still at the heart of the brand is to spearhead an innovative clothing range in line with the trends and synonymous with quality, with close attention paid to fabrics and detailing. With the ability to translate the fashion trends and incorporate the style of the other Max Mara lines, this fashion brand proves that size doesn’t matter when it comes to elegance. With a credible reputation, the classically chic label has won over celebrities such as Grammy Award-winner Adele, and Oscar-winner Patricia Arquette. Marina Rinaldi has been a pioneer in giving the fullerfigured woman beautiful options in a retail world where few are available. You can find the boutique at Prestige, The Avenues. the talk - page 23

Weekend by Max Mara is labelled the ‘lifestyle’ line by the Max Mara Group. Since its launch in 1984, the label has evolved into a rich and sophisticated wardrobe. It is ideal for fashion-savvy women of all ages, who prefer to be comfortable whilst exuding stylish elegance and chic simplicity. From luxurious leathers to sophisticated wool styles, Weekend ensures that attention to detail remains one of the foremost hallmarks of the brand. The Weekend by Max Mara boutique can be found at Second Avenue, The Avenues. the talk - page 24

The colourful and effervescent MAX&Co came into being in 1986. Rooted in material research and attention to detail, collections are stylish, vibrant and contemporary – a complete wardrobe of carefully made, easyto-wear clothes inspired by the spirit of the times and women’s evolving lifestyles. You could describe the MAX&Co woman as chic and dynamic, serious about her clothes and daring in the way she wears them. She is fashion-conscious and aims to project a nonchalant style that isn’t ruled by dominant seasonal codes. With its roots in the Italian sartorial tradition of blending with creative experimentations on forms, materials and colours, MAX&Co’s collections are like a breath of fresh air. They address the girl-on-the-go’s desire for bright colours and statement pieces. Collections showcase effortless collectiond which serve as versatile pieces to compliment any wardrobe. Introduced in 1985, Persona, the sister brand to Marina Rinaldi, takes a more youth focused approach without compromising on quality or style. This exhilarating addition to the Max Mara Group offers playful, plus-size clothing that oozes Italian class. Collections compliment Rinaldi’s more lavish and classic glamour with sporty, relaxed creations, ideal for everyday wear. Combining classic Italian cuts with innovative, modern twists, the brand takes pride in its flattering knitwear, modern silhouettes and competitive prices. It is a label that is perfect for the woman who is full of life and driven by a desire to enjoy comfortable clothing options that also feel, and look, sexy. Persona can be found at Second Avenue, The Avenues, and Marina Mall. the talk - page 26

The Marella brand was established in 1988 with the aim of providing high-quality products at affordable prices. Focusing on clients who are looking for interesting looks and quality clothing and accessories, the brand is committed to keeping a watchful eye on the price-quality ratio. The brand offers complete and diversified collections that can satisfy the needs of its modern clientele. With a fresh and contemporary feel in line with today’s moods and lifestyle, silhouettes, materials and colours are updated every season to keep abreast of the trends, while maintaining a classy, feminine style. Following the popularity of the brand, 1996 saw the creation of the Marella Sport range, focusing on casual clothes for leisure time. This was followed by the knitwear collection, the special occasion range and the accessory collection. Marella can be found at Second Avenue, The Avenues. the talk - page 27

Razan Alazzouni

The Evolution of flower petals and exquisite embroidery Razan Alazzouni is a Saudi fashion designer that has pushed the boundaries of merging art and fashion to create fairytale garments in every breathtaking way possible.

Who was Razan before you turned it into a respective brand? I was an art student, so I was just an artist. I studied in Boston in a college called the school of museum of fine arts, so all of my inspirations that are shown through my designs are from art history books, paintings and sculptures. My major was concentrated on sculptures which reflects a lot on the way I design my clothes in terms of the embroidery and beddings that are infused in the pieces I create. It’s all about dimensions and reflection of light so I kind of fused my clothing as a medium in art. How was it like when you started building your brand? I started the brand in Khobar, Saudi Arabia and in the beginning it was just me, so it was a very small collection. The brand began to develope slowly when two of my sisters joined the Razan Alazzoni: brand and turned into a company. Now we’re 3 partners that work together. I take care of the design and production for the clothing line, each one of my sisters hold a different department. Salwa deals with a lot of the PRs and HR departments, and Raya deals with the brand image and social media, she also designs our accessories line and deals with the online shopping, so anything that has to do with technology is pretty much Raya. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out

in Khobar because when we started there was no acceptance to the idea of a ready-to-wear brand produced in Saudi, so we showed our collection in the states and that’s when we started getting a lot of feedback from America and a lot of good reviews and that became out steppingstone, but our headquarters are always in Khobar. What were the roots of your inspiration when you designed your first collection? The first collection was inspired by a flower, by nature, by ballerinas dancing and how their skirts looked like petals when they would move, and by all the impressionist painters and how they used to use different layers and lights. I made a flower, and that was our signature, that flower slowly evolved within every year in different versions in every collection that was made, but that was the first form of heavy embroidery bedding that I did. That was what my collection was based of off, it was based of off that flower that I had visualized. What is one fabric or pattern that is always included in your collections? Embroidery will always be a part of every collection. same as skirts, tops and dresses. I love the idea of mixing and matching these pieces to turn them into your own style.

How did you become recognized internationally? There were a few things that happened throughout the years. The first step was when we placed our first celebrity request, it was with an actress called Anna Sophia Rob, she wore a piece from our collection to the independent spirit awards and won an award. That was our first celebrity placement and it was kind of what got the brand on the radars in the US. Slowly, we saw that the people became aware of the brand. Later in 2013 we were featured in vogue Italia, and then they chose us to walk the vogue Italy in Dubai. Being chosen as one of the new designers in the world for 2013 was the turning point for us. Everyone looks at the January issue to know who was chosen as the new designer and that year we were chosen. There was photo that they took from online and we don’t even know how they got it and it was a pleasant shock to be chosen. What was your inspiration behind your latest collection? Actually, this collection specifically didn’t have a story behind it, I wanted to take the flower that we originally used from our first collection and simplify it and went for a modern look with it. We wanted to do a collection that was a bit more minimalistic even though it had a lot of embroidery and bedding. Honestly this collection is by

far my favorite that I have done until now because it is the most ‘easy to wear’ collection and at the same time it still has the essence of the brand. How did your footwear and accessories line come about? we received a lot of positive feedback because of our bedding and embroidery designs, and slowly throughout the years our brand started to evolve and released our accessory line 3 years after our ‘ready to wear’ line. After that, we started designing leather belts and then later on we figured “why not do some shoes infusing our infamous embroidery techniques” and so we started making shoes that would also represent the brand. What was your favorite moment throughout your journey as a fashion designer? I work with my sisters, so it’s a fun and dramatic day everyday. We’re all very artistic and all in different department so we never step on each other’s toes, but when we all come together for our managerial meetings that’s when the creativity starts to flow. For example, one of my sisters is very modern and has a more casual side than I do, so she’s always the one suggesting to add pants and shirts to the collection.

the talk - page 35

Fashion - Interview

Other than being a fashion designer, what is it that you are passionate about? There are alot of things I am passionate about, I love art, I love going to the theaters, and my most favorite is spending time with my family of course. I have beautiful nieces and nephews and it brings me joy to watch them grow up. I also enjoy traveling, it’s a blessing to be able to visit new places. I have a group of friends where we decided that every year we would travel to a city or a country non of us had been to and so we’d travel there for 2 weeks, it’s exciting to discover new culture. In your opinion, what does fashion really mean and what should it mean to every individual? I think fashion is an extension to your personality, I believe that when you choose what you’re wearing you’re choosing something that represents your mood and style. I’d always say “don’t follow a trend” I would like for everyone that dresses up not to follow a trend, if you like dressing up like an old grandmother by all means dress up like an old grandmother, what will represent you in the most way will make you feel comfortable.

the talk - page 36

What do you want to achieve in the next few years? We’re opening a Flagship soon; we want to basically expand the brand. Now we are trying to approach the Eastern-Asian markets, making sure that these markets would know us. We’re trying to evolve the brand into something that everybody will recognize. What is one piece you’d like to give to new fashion designers? You need to establish a brand identity because this was the most difficult step to work on, having to decide on what the identity of the brand is because you would like different brands and different styles and your brand has to be true to that, you have to have a trademark. Everyone that goes to any fashion house in the world, for example, if you’re going to Chanel you’re looking for loose dreamy dresses, if you’re going to Dior you’re looking for structured suits, if you’re going to Balmain you’re looking for something edgy, you need to know what your style is.

ME603S The frame front progressively tapers down from the prominent, rounded corners until it almost vanishes, creating an unfinished effect that complements the thickness of the temples. The palette of saturated colors – a typical feature of Marni glasses – is accentuated by the metal bridge and rims that are either gold or silver. ME602S The round lenses contrast with the linear, pronounced browlines that extend along the temples. The color scheme combines the saturated shades of the acetate temples and browlines with the galvanized metal rims. ME601S Already shown at Resort 2016, this model features a unique design that is created by cutting away one vertical acetate layer over another. This design concept emphasizes the color of the frame and creates transparencies that blend with the tone of the lenses. DKNY

Showcases Spring 2016 Collection in Kuwait

DKNY introduces their Spring 2016 collection, the first under new Creative Directors Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, in Kuwait at the DKNY store at The Avenues Mall. Press were treated to refreshments and canapĂŠs while walking through the new, elevated collection.

the talk - page 40

With sophistication and ease, the collection is elevated and established, both in execution and thought. Color, fabric development, fit, and proportion are approached in a completely different way. There’s a new sense of attitude and spirit in this DKNY woman. Inspiration for this season drew from the concept of deconstructing and reconstructing what the brand stood for. Iconic shapes and textiles, such as the strong shoulder and suiting pinstripes, are combined and turned on their head. Pinstripes become an overlying theme for Spring, while other key pieces include doublebreasted, sleeveless jumpers, and trompe l’oeil printed, silk dresses with pieced lace overlays. Subtle and strategic cut outs throughout the collection represent the idea of missing pieces that will eventually get built. It’s an ever-evolving journey. The DKNY woman is not defined by what she’s done but what she’s yet to do. She’s someone who really wants to be taken seriously, but still is not taking herself too seriously. She is a woman with many sides in mind - one who is multidimensional. The collection ties back to the iconic brand with a new energy and spirit. The idea of practicality meeting aspiration. Supporting creativity and creating a wardrobe to empower the modern day woman from New York to Kuwait. About DKNY DKNY is one of the world’s leading fashion brands. From the house founded by Donna Karan in 1984, DKNY emerged in 1989. DKNY designs, markets and distributes collections of apparel, accessories and footwear, with distribution in free

standing stores and select department and specialty stores globally. In 2015, acclaimed New York designers DaoYi Chow and Maxwell Osborne were appointed as Creative Directors of DKNY. The label continues to merge modern tailoring with sophisticated ease. The artistic duo celebrates the aspirational and practical spirit of New York, taking DKNY’s modern urban legacy into the open future. Since November 2001, the Company has been part of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s leading luxury goods group. the talk - page 41

The imperfect perfect wedding dress

Every girl dreams of her perfect wedding day, planning, sketching, ripping pictures from magazines until that dream turns into reality. As little girls, most of us focused on the wedding dress. In life we know by instinct that the sky is blue, that the grass is green and that the sun is yellow, but come to think of it, wedding dresses didn’t always have to be white the talk - page 54

Wedding dresses were established back in 1840 after Queen Victoria married Albert of Saxe-Coburg in a white wedding dress representing her wealth, since then, her white dress inspired thousands of women to follow her footsteps, after that, one of the first women’s magazine in America ‘Godey’s Lady’s Book’ stated that white was the most fitting color to wear on your wedding day. While in other countries such as China, India, and other Eastern cultures the bride would often wear the color red or a white dress incorporating red fabric, which made them to believe that red represented goodluck. Nowadays the color pallete of wedding dresses have spread across the nations, leaving you with limitless options of beautifully structured gowns. Valentino, Ralph & Russo, and Marchesa are a few of the designers that changed the white wedding dress tradition and infused more fabrics, textures, and colors to their creations. the talk - page 55

With This Ring I Thee Wed

It is believed by the Romans that a wedding ring should always be worn on the left hand because there was thought to be a vein in the ring finger called ‘Vena Amoris’ which means ‘Vein of Love’ and believed to be directly connected to the heart.

the talk - page 58

Picking a ring may be the toughest decision to make because you pick a dress, wear it for a day then never wear it again, you pick a venue and decorate with your favorite flowers and all the pretty things then it’s gone once your wedding ceremony comes to an end, but a ring stays with you forever, a ring reminds you that you have vowed to a life long commitment, a ring brings two lives together under one roof to create beautiful memories for eternity. It’s a valuable sentiment. A wedding ring shouldn’t necessarily be a gold or a silver band with a huge diamond thrown on top of it, in fact, gemstones and crystals are more meaningful and symbolic and that’s why we decided to make things easier for you by providing a few of our desired ring inventions to guide you through your beautiful voyage. Inspired by its rich heritage, the Maison is unveiling a brand-new jewelry collection with a rounded, graphic design: Bouton d’or™. Diamonds, gold, mother-of-pearl and hard stones come together in bold creations, born out of a unique expertise. From the choice of materials through to the intricately assembled motifs, each piece reflects all the virtuosity of Van Cleef & Arpels.

the talk - page 62

Plays of lines and colors With joyful harmony, the Bouton d’or collection gives pride of place to the curved lines of a jewelry motif called ‘‘Paillette’’, created by the Maison in the late 1930s. Reinterpreted today, it lends itself to multiple plays of associations, volume and colors, producing a style that is both graphic and feminine. Adorned with a diamond at their centers, these concave or convex elements are repeated to compose a necklace that hugs the neckline, a subtly asymmetric bracelet, earrings that seem to dance with each movement of the body, a threedimensional ring and a generous pendant. Characterized by bold associations of materials, the collection is made up of

two sets of five pieces. Gently reflecting the light, pink gold magnifies the delicate overtones of mother-ofpearl and the warm hue of carnelian, a symbol of life. With their glittering centers, the motifs spread out across different levels, in triple rows or joyful circles. In a more contrasted pairing, yellow gold accentuates the encounter between the rich, deep black color of onyx and chrysoprase, whose springlike green suffuses the creations with a luminous vitality. Fringed with discretely mobile pastilles, two pieces combine rounded curves with the geometric purity of the lozenge, to adorn a finger or give shape to a pendant that can be transformed into a clip.

A timeless aesthetic A blend of tradition and modernity, the Bouton d’or collection’s style has its origins in the Paillette motif, which first appeared in the Maison’s archives in 1939. During the 1940s, this precious pastille of yellow gold was revealed in various interpretations. Gathered together into a rounded ring or the strands of an opulent double necklace, the motifs also formed sparkling bouquets. Set with colored stones, they brought a glittering threedimensional quality to the skirts of the ballerinas created by the Maison during the same period. This joyful, solar aesthetic enjoyed continued success in the 1950s, when yellow gold complemented the fashionable feminine outfits of the day. From simple or double bracelets to earrings draped with the motif, the creations’ fluid, flexible lines echoed the world of couture that was such an inspiration to Van Cleef & Arpels at that time.

Groundbreaking savoir-faire Stone selection The Bouton d’or collection – which is as notable for its meticulous choice of materials as it is for its delicately matched motifs – expresses all the excellence of Van Cleef & Arpels. For the hard stones, the Maison has been particularly attentive to the homogeneity and vivacity of their color, to their luminosity (for chrysoprase) and their depth (for carnelian). The mother-of-pearl used by Van Cleef & Arpels offers a regular surface and a luster of the highest quality, while its diamonds are selected according to the Maison’s standards of excellence: D, E or F for color, IF and VVS for clarity. They thus enhance the beauty of materials that have themselves been hand‑polished to magnify their radiance. To ensure the complete harmony of each piece, the pastilles that compose it are carefully matched for color, as well as for the opacity and overtones of their materials. When brought together to form a necklace, bracelet or ring, they compose a perfect symphony of jewelry.

the talk - page 66

Polishing the pastilles

Jewelry expertise Creating the Bouton d’or collection called for an exceptional degree of precision, meticulousness and technical skill. Once the various gold pieces have been shaped by hand, they undergo successive polishing – a particularly delicate process for the concave and convex pastilles. The glitter of the precious metal must be revealed, while carefully preserving the form of the motif. In gold, mother-of-pearl or hard stone, each pastille is adorned at its center with a diamond in closed setting that illuminates the different materials. To ensure the pieces’ suppleness and flexibility, these motifs are carefully attached together: the process calls for a precise and agile hand, since hundreds of components – up to one thousand in the case of a necklace – must be joined together. The end result is then carefully examined to guarantee that it meets the Maison’s stringent criteria for quality and finish.

BIG BANG BRODERIE

A new icon is born. The art of fusion with a feminine touch

The much praised inimitable character and technological excellence of Big Bang have made it the ultimate symbol of fusion. The brand has become the showcase for the run-away creativity that is the essence of Swiss manufacturer Hublot. A philosophy of luxury freed from the established codes. The two new limited-series Big Bang 41 MM Broderie Sugar Skull and Big Bang 41 MM Broderie, presented at the 2016 Geneva Show, bear witness to this ideology. They blend confident femininity with innovation at its peak and, for the second year running, consecrate Saint-Gallen embroidery on organza silk. A new icon is born. Accompanying women for whom independence is a question of style and a state of mind. Hublot is ever at the forefront of research into the latest hi-tech materials and guardian of traditional

expertise. It acts as a bridge between a past that bears the traces of the most talented watchmakers and a future nourished on visionary artistic concepts—testing with mastery all the realms of the possible. With Hublot, there are no limits to innovation. It is the company’s reason for being. The Big Bang is the unrivalled icon of fusion; the brand was born to break established codes and over time has demonstrated its ability to create exclusivity. Having incorporated composite resin, carbon and ceramic, invented Magic Gold and borrowed denim, the basic essential from our wardrobes, as part of its watchmaking proposals... in 2015, Hublot has freed embroidered silk organza from the fixed notions and the traditional ideas that had held it for so long. The Swiss manufacturer has taken the craft away from haute couture, fashion and lingerie and used it to adorn its Big Bang. On the strap and the dial, but not only. In 2015, for the first time in the history of watchmaking, “encased” in carbon fibre, the embroidered web-like material acts as a shell to form the dial and the carbon bezel of the watch. The execution of this technical prowess required several years of research and development. This first Big Bang Broderie is a symbol of confident femininity and glamour, blending two forms of Swiss expertise, which won the prestigious Ladies’ Watch Prize at the 2015 Geneva Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie. the talk - page 77

Carl Brashear Limited Edition Celebrating a man of honour The Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition is based on Oris’s hugely successful Divers Sixty-Five and celebrates a man who conquered not only challenges of race, but also of disability. Brashear joined the Navy in 1948 as a 17-year-old, and despite facing discrimination on account of his race he graduated from the Navy’s diving programme in 1954. In 1966, he lost the lower part of his left leg in an accident during a mission to salvage a hydrogen bomb. After an exhausting period of rehabilitation, he became the U.S. Navy’s first amputee diver in 1968, and then qualified as a Master Diver in 1970, the first African American to do so. After a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy that lasted more than 30 years, Brashear retired in 1979. He died in 2006 aged 75. His extraordinary story was the inspiration for the 2000 film Men of Honour, in which Brashear was portrayed by Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr.

means each of the limited run of 2,000 pieces will develop a unique patina over time – and a unique relationship with their owner. The unidirectional rotating bezel is also made of bronze, with a raised minute scale for tracking dive times, a look that recalls a number of diver’s watches in the Oris archive. The stainless steel case back shows Brashear’s helmet and his very personal claim. Under the watch’s dark blue dial is an automatic mechanical movement, and the watch is waterresistant to 100 metres. The Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition presents a unique opportunity to own Oris’s first bronze watch, but more importantly to pay tribute to a man whose convictions changed the course of history and to support the Carl Brashear Foundation. A man of honour.

The watch marking Brashear’s life and character is the first Oris watch to be made in bronze, a naturally aging material used in deep-sea diving helmets of the 1950s. It takes its aesthetic from the Oris Divers SixtyFive, but at 42mm in diameter. Bronze is initially bright and shiny, and then darkens as its copper content reacts with carbon dioxide and moisture. Jean-Michel Basquiat

A purposeful movement that dove into the roots of art and beyond

Editor: Zeina Al Ayoub the talk - page 96

Born on December 22 1960 in Brooklyn New York, Jean-Michel Basquiat an American artist who started to become influenced at the age of 6 when he wanted to become a cartoonist. His mother always supported him and took him to art museums in New York for inspiration. In school, Basquiat developed “SAMO” comic character with his friend Diaz in high school, Jean-Michel never graduated. In 1978 he ran away from home and lived on the streets or at his friends’ homes. Diaz and Jean started to paint many graffiti phrases in downtown Manhattan signed “SAMO”. In December, they gained recognition when they were both interviewed by Village Voice. Unfortunately, Basquiat and Diaz’s partnership fell apart and Basquiat started to mark the words “SAMO is dead” on his artwork. the talk - page 97

the talk - page 98

A year later in 1979, he began to gain modest success, especially when he joined a band called ‘Gray’ which would usually perform in nightclubs. Later that year, Jean-Michel began to exhibit his artwork still under the brand “SAMO”. He then met Andy Warhol in a restaurant where he showed Warhol his artwork and led them to start a friendship and an art collaboration. “Basquiat’s canon revolves around single heroic figures: athletes, prophets, warriors, cops, musicians, kings and the artist himself. In these images the head is often a central focus, topped by crowns, hats, and halos. In this way the intellect is emphasized, lifted up to notice, privileged over the body and the physicality of these figures (i.e. black men) commonly represent in the world.” At the age of 20 Jean-Michel Basquiat began to achieve notoriety in New York’s circle of art and sold his first art piece and decided to leave the band ‘Gray’ and focus on his work. Basquiat was found dead in his New York loft on August 12, 1988 due to toxins. Over three hundred admirers attended a November 5 memorial for the artist, a testament to his enduring legacy as both an artist and a rising sociopolitical force. His works continue to be exhibited, studied, and sold even today. the talk - page 99

Zaha Hadid may have left the world as a whole, but her spirit will always drift gracefully through her breathtaking projects leaving nothing behind but her footprints in the world of architecture.

the talk - page 108

What made you start Drawing Kuwait? Basically, when I was studying abroad, I did not come back often on breaks, I only came back for two weeks a year, and then I stopped visiting for the year and a half while doing my Masters degree. I had a blast, but I ended up feeling disconnected from home, I was not caught up with all the social media or anyone else, and mostly I was not updated on anything happening in Kuwait. I came back, and started reaching out and found out that a lot of people were admitting that there is something missing, something needed to change, that’s when I’ve decided to start gathering people every month, select a specific building and go drawing in a calm friendly setting where it can be a social thing and at the same time people can learn and have fun. Describe a usual day of Drawing Kuwait, how is it like? Who attends this monthly event? There’s always music, it’s not a lecture or a boring talk, people don’t really have to be artists or technical drawers, it’s basically for anyone who is interested in architecture. A lot of architects, designers, artists and photographers join in which is beautiful because each person is different they end up relaxing and feeling comfortable because they’re surrounded by others that share the same ideas and aesthetics, they come to socialize and share their experience. The aim for this is learning, but in an indirect way while having fun.

Does it get busy? Do you get to draw with them? It does, I enjoy it a lot, but most of the time I don’t get to draw. I have to make sure everyone is comfortable, answer questions, help and guide them, socializing, documenting and taking videos and photos, unless the number of attendance is small, it gets easier to manage a smaller group of people and get to draw with them. It’s not a bad thing to not be able to join in with drawing, it just means Drawing Kuwait is serving its purpose. How many buildings have you covered? So far 18, six buildings each year, I just finished my third year. I am aiming to increase the number, but first I aim to change the mentality of people in Kuwait; if we had been outside of Kuwait we would do this on a weekly basis, but people are still shy and scared, they need a little push. Why draw the buildings? People usually do not pay attention to a lot of things, but once you hold your pen or pencil, your eyes wander to every detail, you start paying attention to where the lines meet, where things are bulky and where things are big or small. You’ll start appreciating the building the more you add details into it. Most of the good designers and architects still draw by hand, it’s more important than using other tools, the initial ideas drawn by hand give amazing results. Most of all, it’s about giving back to the community.

Architecture & Design - Interview

What’s next for Drawing Kuwait? New Partnership, more buildings and events… I want someone to run Drawing Kuwait with me, someone with a different mentality than mine. I want to make it bigger, I don’t want it to stop at drawing buildings. I want someone to write about it and publish it as a monthly thing, so other people that are interested can know about it and can understand what we are doing. Each event we are holding has a purpose, which will be understood by drawing, by writing or by reading. Intensive research is immanent to learn about the location or buildings, so that could guide each other to learn about historical places that are about to be demolished, we can perhaps help preserve it. After drawing the buildings, and as an Urban Designer, what have you noticed around Kuwait? We have an amazing weather in Winter and Spring, but people do not walk to places at all, unless it’s a mosque next to their house. Not a lot of shaded areas are provided to walk through. And the curbs are almost too dangerous to walk on or to cross from. Some elements are missing that might enable people to walk around the city. More attention needs to be paid towards the way buildings coexist together. We have beautiful spaces in the city and around other areas that can be occupied in a better way. What would you change as an Urban designer/Architect? People’s mentality. They need to be more open to new ideas, explore what’s working and what’s not. They need to be aware of what Urban Design is, hopefully before it is late to do so. Think of it as food… a few years ago not a lot of people cared what they ate, until they started being aware of calories, health and etc. These days eating healthy became part of a lot of people, hopefully what I’m trying to do here will have that big of an impact.

Al Ahmadi Revisited

The idea of Ahmadi Town started during 1920’s, where the search for new natural resources in the region, such as water and oil took place, leading to the discovery of oil in the region. As a result of the British agreement with Kuwait at that time; the Anglo-persian (PB) & Gulf oil companies, formed what is currently known as Kuwait Oil Company K.O.C.

Aston Martin unveils the DB11 The latest in an illustrious bloodline

A new chapter in Aston Martin’s history began at the 86th International Geneva Motor Show with the unveiling of the DB11. The first product launched under the company’s ‘Second Century’ plan, DB11 is the bold new figurehead of the illustrious ‘DB’ bloodline and an authentic, dynamic sporting GT in the finest Aston Martin tradition. The DB11 showcased a fresh and distinctive design language, pioneering aerodynamics and is powered by a potent new in-house designed 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine. Built upon a new lighter, stronger, and more space efficient bonded aluminium structure, DB11 is the most powerful, most efficient and most dynamically gifted DB model in Aston Martin’s history. As such, it is the most significant new Aston Martin since the introduction of the DB9 in 2003. the talk - page 128

Heralding a new design era for Aston Martin, DB11 is the latest landmark in a remarkable aesthetic journey; one that gave us icons such as the DB2/4, DB5 and, most recently, the DB10 developed specifically for James Bond. DB11 re-imagines the relationship between form and function with a series of fresh design signatures. Foremost amongst these are the front-hinging clamshell bonnet, distinctive LED headlights and accentuated lines of the iconic Aston Martin grille. The profile is equally

dramatic, thanks to the roof strakes that flow uninterrupted from A-pillar to C-pillar. The clean lines continue at the rear, with a sloping decklid that smoothly blends into boldly sculpted tail-lights to create a new and unmistakable graphic. Innovative aerodynamics play their part in this aesthetic revolution with clever management of airflow both over and through the bodywork aiding stability while preserving the DB11’s uncluttered surfaces. Front-end lift is reduced by the gill-like Curlicue which releases high-pressure air from inside the wheel arch via a concealed vent within the redesigned side-strake. Meanwhile, rear-end lift is reduced by the Aston Martin AeroBladeTM; a virtual spoiler fed by discreet air intakes located at the base of each C-pillar. Air is ducted through the bodywork, before venting as a jet of air from the aperture in the rear decklid.

new twin-turbo V12 engine, the DB11’s chassis, suspension, steering and electronics have been re-imagined and key new technologies embraced. Multiple driver-selectable dynamic modes - GT, Sport and Sport Plus - progressively intensify the response of the engine, 8-speed automatic ZF transmission together with the new electric power steering and Torque Vectoring by braking while increasing the firmness of the adaptive damping for a greater sense of agility. The result is a driving experience that combines exemplary ride comfort and true sports car agility, for an extraordinary breadth of dynamic capability.

Like every Aston Martin, the heart of the DB11 is found beneath the bonnet, though unlike any Aston Martin before it, the DB11’s heart is a 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12. Designed in-house this new engine develops 608PS1 (600BHP1) and 700Nm1 of torque, making DB11 the most powerful production DB model ever. Naturally, it’s the most dynamic and most accelerative too, with a top speed of 200mph1 and a 0-62mph time of just 3.9sec1. Thanks to intelligent bank activation and stop-start technology that potency is matched by greatly improved efficiency.

As a true 21st century Aston Martin the DB11 combines the very latest technology developed in conjunction with technical partner, Daimler, with the finest quality and hand craftsmanship. Using a full-colour 12” TFT LCD display, the all-new instrument cluster presents primary vehicle information with absolute clarity, while a second, centrally-mounted 8” TFT screen is dedicated to infotainment. Controlled via an intuitive rotary control, with an optional touchpad offering character recognition, multi-touch and gesture support, the new satellite navigation and audio system have never been more effective, sounded better or been easier to operate. A newly implemented auto-park assist feature and 360-degree birds-eye view camera helps provide safe maneuvering at slow speeds and is also operated via the car’s infotainment system.

To exploit the advantages of its new body structure and harness the immense performance of the

First deliveries of the DB11 car are scheduled to begin during the fourth quarter of 2016. the talk - page 129

Life Style - Horoscopes

horoscopes Aries (Mar. 21-April 20)

Taurus (Apr. 21-May 21)

Gemini (May 22-june 21)

Sometimes it’s easier to tend to life’s mundane details rather than lift your eyes and see the big picture, Aries. For example, it’s likely that you’ve grown complacent at work. Could it be that you aren’t at the right job or in the right career after all? Busying yourself with trivia isn’t the way to avoid answering the question. It’s imperative that you face it head on and make the necessary changes.

Change is in the air, Taurus. Whether it’s a dramatic change of faith or a major shift in your life’s goals, prepare yourself for a profound transformation. It’s likely due to the fact that you now have more freedom to do what you want, when you want. Perhaps a financial windfall has made this possible. Take care to choose your new path wisely. It doesn’t offer you the choice of returning to your old lifestyle.

It’s time to refill the well of your soul, Gemini. You spend so much of your life in service to others that it’s only natural that you feel drained sometimes. Rather than try to push past this feeling and go on as though nothing is the matter, consider it a sign that something is amiss. Admit if you’re feeling unappreciated. You’ve spent too much time putting the happiness of others before your own. It’s time to change your priorities.

Libra (Sept. 24-Oct. 23)

Scorpio (Oct. 24-Nov. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 23-Dec. 21)

You always suspected that your job was making you crazy, but it never occurred to you that it could make you sick, too. Is it really worth it, Libra? You may be asking yourself this question today. Fortunately, your talents apply to several professions. Why not take a closer look at other fields? One way or another, it’s clear that change is coming. You might as well be the one who directs it.

Just how long has it been since you indulged in a big helping of your favorite guilty pleasure, Scorpio? It’s time to let the youngster in you come out and play today. Eat that chocolate, read those mindless magazines, or skip down the sidewalk. You’ve been taking life much too seriously lately. Even grownups are entitled to indulge in the pleasures of youth from time to time.

If you feel like you’re trying to push a square peg into a round hole, you’re probably right, Sagittarius. Whether you’re having personal or professional difficulties, there are times when it just doesn’t pay to try so hard. In fact, it’s often a sign that there is something fundamentally wrong with the relationship. Try to take more of a philosophical attitude, Sagittarius. If it’s meant to work, it will.

the talk - page 138

Cancer (June 22-july 22)

Leo (July 23-aug 22)

You would make an excellent judge, Cancer. You’re able to consider all aspects of a situation. This is a bit of a blessing and a curse, because it can make it difficult to come to a decision. Today you could face the challenge of reconsidering past decisions. Oncebinding contracts need to be reviewed and new ones created. Prior commitments need reevaluation. This is tiring but necessary if you’re to move forward.

Just because one person is no longer a part of your life doesn’t mean that all people are unreliable. People change, as do situations. It’s possible that this person was no longer a healthy influence on you, in which case the departure is for the best. You’re going to have to become more adaptable, Leo, because there are more changes on the horizon, especially where your career is concerned.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 23) It can be hard to release old habits and beliefs even as new, better ways of thinking struggle to gain a foothold. It’s time for you to do this, Virgo. You might find it difficult to confide your feelings to another, but a frank conversation with close friends will do much to ease your mind. There’s no question that you’re changing. Your friends will show you that this transformation is positive.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20)

Aquarius (Jan. 21-Feb. 19)

Pisces (Feb. 20-Mar. 20)

Things aren’t always as they first appear. People you thought you knew well and circumstances that you thought you understood thoroughly now seem anything but straightforward. Has the world really changed that much or has your perception altered somehow? It’s time to direct this “altered” vision inward. You’re ready for a change, Capricorn. Perhaps it’s time to dust off that resume.

Difficult as it may be for you to face all those projects you’ve left undone, Aquarius, know that you’ll be free to move on once they’re complete. People from your past figure prominently now. Perhaps they come forward to repay an old debt or possibly claim repayment from you. Don’t abandon your dreams. Once you’ve cleared a path for them, they’re more likely to come true.

You could have a “eureka!” moment today, Pisces, as events from your past unexpectedly bubble to the surface of your mind and crystallize in a surprising new way. Suddenly, you have a clear understanding of how these past events affect your present behavior. You can use this new knowledge to bring about change. There is clearly a situation at work or at home that is in need of transformation. the talk - page 139
