The Bomber Jacket The bomber jacket will never go out of style, but year after year this look is getting an upgrade. As seen on the runways and high street stores, designers are getting more creative that we’re definitely calling it the jacket of the season. We love the color combos and the different fabrics mixed together, it can make your subtle outfit pop. A good bomber is a mix between just the right amount of menswear and women’s streetwear, both of which are finding their way into women’s fashion right now. Surprised? Don’t forget about your boyfriend jeans! Sporty yet feminine, bomber jackets are a great way to dress down and give a too-girly outfit a bit of an edge. You can wear it super-oversized with arms rolled up or a slim fit, with a tight dress, or with a pair of a pair of ripped jeans. They’re also really, really comfortable which is always a win!

In 2017 this trend has taken over womenswear, we are loving the velvet pumps, flats, bags and sneakers with earthy warm colors which are the highlight of this season! This lux and elegant fabric is sure to upgrade your style, forget about limiting velvet styles to clothes; start incorporating velvet accessories into your daily looks for a va va voom effect!

Max Mara’s
Famous Teddy Bear Coat “Every few years we feel the need to present a collection that is just about Max Mara, our brand values and our unique history.” Ian Griffiths

Fall 2017 was one of those collections. Max Mara’s creative director Ian Griffiths spent a lot of time in the archive and rediscovered the rich ‘Teddy Bear’ coats that the brand made in the 80’s using plush long pile fabrics in noble fibers - originally developed in German mills for making high end children’s’ toys. He discovered that not only were those fabrics no longer made, but the mills had all closed down and much of the know-how had been lost. The team worked with an Italian supplier to redevelop the technology to produce a unique faux fur of pure camel hair on a base of silk. The exuberant volume of the coat is a celebration of the fabric’s opulent extravagance. Everyone who sees it just wants to wrap themselves up in it, including Carine Roitfeld, Kim Kardashian and Rita Ora to name a few.

Dolce & Gabbana Fall/Winter 2017-18
Because we can never have enough of it! The Dolce & Gabbana show is a ‘Show’ in the true sense of the word; the casting underlined a radical change to traditional expectations. A smattering of models in the front row or on the catwalk, everyone was excited to see what Dolce & Gabbana had in store this season.
the talk - page 26
The duo cracked jokes with the audience, kissed and hugged people, took selfies. To immortalize the decorative crowns, headbands with “New Rinascimentoâ€? written in stars and popping out on tops underlined the current mood of the design duo. Animal prints for all ages added a wild touch. From undergarments to fur coats, menswear jackets and lace. A floral touch, appearing as plastic appliquĂŠ on small coats. With logos and letters on T-Shirts and coats, pins and buttons. And for the most beautiful of the social media realm, card prints. To play or perhaps to lighten the irony, which Instagram fans will know to be a favorite of Mr. Gabbana. There were also white bear sweatshirts and canary yellow suits, embroidered tails and bomber jackets with souvenir jeans printed with space age cartoons. the talk - page 27

Etro – The Paisley Tribe Take a walk into a colorful winter with Etro Paisley Tribe, a fearless group of exploring women who lead the way to this season’s adventure playground.
the talk - page 28
This season Veronica Etro has mixed worlds, plucking her family’s famous paisley and punching it with psychedelic colors. Winter’s traditional palette of pine, mud, bordeaux and black is shot with hot pink, revived cobalt, emerald green, and acid yellow. Bright, feisty, active and energized, the new look is rooted in a functional sportiness with bursts of Etro’s traditional femininity and its mastery of mixing. Oversized outerwear creates cozy bulky upper halves with long plissé printed paisley dresses fluttering beneath. Intricate brocades are trimmed with colorful ribbons or borders recalling colorful ethnic saddles. While jacquards are boldly slashed with opulent gold and trimmed in colorful micro threading that recalls Tibetan flags. Bags are big enough to carry one’s necessities but showered in luxe and the look is finished off with trek-ready footwear, sealing the funky nomad vibe. the talk - page 29

The influence of tailoring is evident in the collection, garments are reimagined with a modern twist; a wool blend suit in burgundy features menswear-inspired voluminous slacks that drape at the feet, a tailored wool blend top with zip detail is paired with a silk ivory shirt and a long deconstructed sleeveless waistcoat feels effortless in a relaxed, unstructured material. Taking its inspiration from the lines of architecture and industrial references, the collection experiments with the proportion of silhouettes and details – featuring exaggerated lapels, cuffs and vents, sharp pleats inspired by press folds and the use of geometric shapes. Bold forms are complemented by innovative and technical materials inspired by experimental art and design. Fabrics are clean and compact, whilst draped and cut in interesting ways. The Longchamp Madeleine Sophie Delafontaine drew inspiration for the just-released Longchamp Madeleine collection of bags from the iconic La Madeleine district. Dotted with theatres and exclusive bistros, this area in the 8th arrondissement of Paris is also where Longchamp opened its first store on Rue Saint Honoré nearly 30 years ago. The Longchamp Madeleine is a truly feminine bag – exquisite and charmingly retro – with sleek graphic contours and legendary Longchamp craftsmanship, made from sumptuously supple taurillon calfskin that is simply divine. This exquisitely detailed handbag is the perfect accomplice for the discerning Parisian woman who embraces diverse styles. She’ll appreciate the raw edging, the saddle-stitched leather, and the wide flap signed with the time-honored, gleaming Roseau clasp. We also like its well-designed interior layout and classic palette with colors like striking black, charming khaki, seductive amethyst and soft terracotta. In typical Longchamp style, yet another lovely story unfolds... Once upon a time there was the Longchamp Madeleine, a bag of rare grace whose favorite place to be was in the hands of an ultra-modern woman…

Launched in SS17, the collection has now been updated for AW17, and sees the introduction of metallics, bows, and a beautifully-textured wave-knit. Not just a pretty face, the Überknit is also über-comfortable thanks in part to the foot being enveloped within a single piece of knitted fabric.

Women can wear the Überknit sneaker with just about every trouser leg-width imaginable. As for skirts, shorts and dresses – consider the ballerina your go-to shoe. Flattering? Totally! Comfortable? Absolutely! In the sneaker, the cleverly ribbed upper sock (featuring decorative laces) is contoured to hug the ankle, while the engineered weave in both the ballerina and sneaker ensures the foot remains in place to prevent slipping and sliding and heel and toe rubbing. Brands on the Come Up Andrea Jiapei Li Andrea Jiapei Li is a New York-based womenswear designer, fresh out of Parsons - The New School of Design. We first caught Jiapei Li at VFILES Runway in New York back in 2016, where she won, amongst other up-and-coming designers. Since then, the designer has established herself as a maverick of the New York design scene, noted in Vogue US, Vogue China, I-D, and Dazed, among others. Andrea Jiapei Li designs for the grown up tomboy - one who is sporty and modern, while simultaneously elegant. With every collection, Andrea Jiapei Li also taps into an experience or identity, making her one of our favorite storytellers. For her AW17 collection pictured, the designer drew inspiration from the world of science fiction, telling the story of self-discovery experienced by linguist Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams in the film “Arrival,” as she communicates with aliens to save humanity. Andrea Jiapei Li managed to communicate this through her evolution of fabric techniques and silhouettes. The oversized outerwear presented in the collection were made to symbolize protection, before a dramatic shift is made to effortless off-the-shoulder pieces and asymmetrical silhouettes, mirroring the character’s acceptance and growth into her identity. The intricate creative process behind Jiapei Li’s work continues to push her to the forefront of the international fashion stage, and we cannot wait to see what is yet to come from the young designer. El Ganso is in town Founded by the Cebrián brothers, Clemente and Alvaro, El Ganso certainly made its way into the global market with a lasting impact. On the streets of Soho the brothers discovered their passion to offer elegant yet informal style, that too at a reasonable price; something unheard of in Spain at the time. Years later, driven by their maverick spirit, they left no stone unturned to found a fashion brand defined by their personality. We had a chance to meet the co-founder, Alvaro Cebrián who told us all about how it all started and how they got to the Middle East. Alvaro studied Economics with his brother in Spain, however during the summers they would travel to London to work and learn English at the same time. That was when the idea to start El Ganso emerged. Alvaro and his brother loved the vintage shops, retro style, and typical British style - with a modern touch. Vintage was their inspiration, yes indeed; their goal, however, was to create a line with a fresher style, add more color, more contemporary, and with better prices. When asked why they chose to name the brand “El Ganso,” Alvaro chuckled and told us, “It means ‘goose’ in Spanish! In Spain, when we say goose we think of elegance and humor at the same time. This is what our brand is about - contemporary, fun, and also elegant.” El Ganso’s style is traditional with a twist. Attention to detail is very important especially when mixing colors which is what El Ganso is about. It also has a strong DNA which differentiates it from different brands. It is not ageoriented, the same piece can be worn by both a 15-year-old and a 70-yearold. The brand’s menswear identity was significantly tuned to incorporate changes in the fashion industry. There is a growing awareness and demand for fashionable and stylish menswear. El Ganso ensures to stay on top of the fashion game for both male and female sectors, keeping in mind the fast rate of change in trends and styles. El Ganso has many stores throughout Europe, and Kuwait was their first venture into the Arab market. Alvaro mentioned, “Kuwait is a very important country when it comes to fashion, and that’s why our first store was to be located here. We hope that if all goes well, we can open up more stores here and in the region.”

Choker-ed Up The latest trend, well more like a resurgent one, we’re noticing is the choker trend. It may have started out with a simple black velvet choker, having evolved into different styles. Let’s just pause and take a look at jewelry assimilated with the chokers. We’ve seen diamond chokers centuries ago, but we didn’t quite realize that a whole trend will evolve thereafter. We’re seeing different colors of velvet, crystal chokers, and even choker tops. Dipping into luxury, we’ve been noticing a lot of dangling chokers such as the Jacquie Aiche Diamond Shaker Necklace. Knowing how to wear them is crucial as not every neckline can be paired up with a choker. The flashier your outfit - the more subtle your choker should be. As for dangling diamonds, they’re a classic twist to modern everyday jewelry that can be worn with almost anything thanks to their simplicity.

Pearl Affair From gorgeous dangling earrings to drapes of necklaces. How Coco Chanel of you? A classic and ageless look that will forever be a favorite without a doubt. From day to night, you can style it however you please, according to the occasion and the outfit. Many accessory designers as well as jewelry designers incorporate pearls into their designs. We love Cartier’s trinity earrings and how they have incorporated pearls into the piece; let the earrings do the talking and wear it on a plain neck or maybe paired with a simple dainty necklace. Dressing up a little black dress? Drapes of pearls it is. If the neckline is high, drape them backwards and pull your hair up. If you’re the arm-candy type of gal then pearl cuffs are for you! You’re never too young or too old for pearls.

Van Cleef & Arpels: Bouton d’or A dialogue in gold
Drawing inspiration from the Maison’s heritage, the Bouton d’orTM jewelry collection is today enriched with luminous interpretations that play on overtones of pink and white gold. The five new pieces celebrate the rounded lines of the Paillette motif. From the working of the precious metal to the intricate assembly of different elements, each of them reflects the virtuosity of Van Cleef & Arpels.
the talk - page 72
Delicate interplays of color The Bouton d’or collection takes on a hint of gentleness and luminosity, with an original combination of materials setting an elegant modern tone. On a necklace, a ring, a bracelet, earrings and a pendant, pink and white gold form a joyful pairing enhanced by the intense sparkle of diamonds. This effect is complemented by the alternating colors of pastilles and closed settings, which create a delicate succession of shades. The gold’s twin colors shimmer in the light, setting to an interplay of gentle reflections. This attention to color is supplemented by intricate threedimensional volume: whether concave or convex, the Paillette motif provides the pieces with fluidity and relief. Adorned with a diamond at their centers, these elements repeat to form a necklace that hugs the contours of the neckline, a subtly asymmetric bracelet or earrings that seem to dance in unison with their wearer’s movements. In all, five new creations join the existing Bouton d’or creations, characterized by an association of diamonds with mother-of-pearl, carnelian and pink gold or onyx, chrysoprase and yellow gold. Last month, the collection was further enriched with a watch, whose rounded lines combine the sun-like gleam of yellow gold with the brilliance of diamonds. Adopting the Paillette motif’s graphic aesthetic, this watch is a harmonious match for the Maison’s yellow gold pieces, from Bouton d’or to Perlée. the talk - page 73

The collection dedicated to the six NBA teams is full of appealing design quirks, including clear indices and a black dial, which leave the logo and team colors free to be admired. A useful chronograph function adds to the sporty appeal. No detail is left neglected with the Tissot Chrono XL. Slick black PVD coating on the case, colored stitching on the leather strap and sandblasted finishing, which gives a matte finish, ensures the result is ultra-modern. No sports fan will be able to resist this stylish homage to their favorite team. the talk - page 74
The Hublot Techframe Ferrari 70 Years Tourbillon Chronograph
Hublot introduces the Hublot Techframe Ferrari 70 Years Tourbillon Chronograph watch, marking the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Ferrari, at Maranello, Italy. The Swiss watchmaking brand has developed a limited edition watch for the historical occasion, unveiled at this year’s Baselworld. This unique collection is the result of an intensive collaboration between car designers and high-end watchmakers. It is also the first non-automotive object that has been designed by Ferrari’s in-house team, Centro Stile, led by Flavio Manzoni, a marvelous cohesion with Hublot’s fine craftsmanship and technical expertise. Taking the movement of the Hublot Tourbillon Chronograph (the “engine”) as a starting point, the Italian designers developed the watch following the same creative processes as those used for sports car chassis, to achieve minimal weight combined with a solid frame. The Swiss watchmakers then inserted a high-performance “engine” into this structure: the HUB6311 caliber handwound manufacture movement, containing a total of 253 components and with a 5-day power reserve.
The dial, which features both the Hublot and Ferrari logos, takes inspiration from the counters on Ferrari’s instrument panels. The open design leaves the movement visible, and allows a glimpse of the beautiful ruthenium anthracite finish. Available in king gold, titanium and PEEK carbon, the timepiece comes with a smooth black rubber strap that can be easily disjoined by two lateral push-buttons in Ferrari red, limited to 70 collector pieces. the talk - page 75

Second Skin Facial masks are a pampering, beneficial way to draw out impurities, exfoliate, hydrate, soothe or tone your face. There are different types of face masks: clay, peel-off masks, natural, cream, sheet. Whether you have oily, dry, or aging skin, there’s an appropriate face mask for you. Clay masks contain natural clay substances that deep cleanse by drawing impurities to the skin’s surface as it dries and tightens. Clay masks work for people with normal to oily skin as they absorb excess oil without stripping their skin. Peel-off masks come in a gel form usually, they tighten the skin temporarily and some stimulate blood supply. They work best for dry skin. Another type is the cream mask which can be described as an intensive moisturizer. Natural masks are usually mixtures of different ingredients such as honey masks, cucumber masks, and of course the famous egg yolk mask for skin rejuvenation. Last but not least, the sheet mask, which we’re convinced is a mood-booster, can be usually used for hydration, calming, and brightening the skin.

Hair Masks: Keep it natural Let’s talk about hair. We’re used to the usual shampoo, conditioner, and maybe some serum routine. What about deep conditioning? What about locking in moisture? What about repairing the damage. Your hair might be screaming out for help and you’re avoiding it by curling or straightening it (wish that would work with all problems). With so many natural and semi-natural treatments out there we’re lost at what to choose. Here are a few natural and other deep treatments you might consider trying: Natural treatments such as aloe vera, avocado, rocca, banana, and honey are all ingredients mixed and used to restore moisture and balance the oils in your hair. Depending on what your hair needs, aloe vera thickens the hair at the roots while avocado and rocca restores moisture. Coconut oil is a miracle! It adds moisture to your hair and protects it from heat damage, you can use it either as a deep treatment, or a leave in serum. It can also be used as a makeup remover but we’ll leave that for later. Next up is argan, whether it’s argan oil or cream-based, this wonder oil really does wonders to your hair. Not only does it give it a subtle glow, it smells amazing too. Speaking of nice scents, another cream-based hair mask is the macadamia. You start off with the shampoo and then a leave-in mask that will leave your hair shinier and healthier.

Chanel Collection Libre 2017 “I want to have the red lipstick that CHANEL has chosen for me” Lucia Pica The iconic red lipstick is tailor-made with a unique undertone for each woman in the latest COLLECTION LIBRE. Offered in a choice of four reds —numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively— it is a return to the classic territory of CHANEL. Gabrielle Chanel was never without her own red lipstick; it was seen as very much part of her personal signature. And it is the notion of the iconic, personal signature that Lucia Pica seeks to impart and provide for each woman through the CHANEL red lipstick, making it an indispensable ‘red for life’ or ‘rouge pour la vie.’ This is a ‘red for life’ both in terms of its everyday application, as well as in the hope that the tailormade CHANEL red will result in the consumer’s lifelong loyalty to the lipstick– the collection affirms its status as a glamorous classic and the ultimate red lipstick. Meanwhile, makeup for eyes, cheeks and nails act as something of a ‘supporting cast’ in the collection and also utilize red tones in many cases. Eyes are the closest ‘co-stars’ for the lips, featuring dark hues and shine. The exclusive creation, an extended eye shadow palette, could equally be viewed as a classic for CHANEL, providing a product akin to the notion of ‘eyes for life’ in its harmony of tones that suit all women.

Dipping into the world of Essential Makeup with Fabrizio D’andrea D’andrea’s main objective - prioritizing a woman’s desire to seek what she really wants, what is important to her, un-comprising; surely in terms of makeup and skincare, as well when it comes to fashion and style, and beyond. Fabrizio worked 25 years in fashion and style, and has an extensive exposure working with several luxury brands. It was about 23 years ago that he was asked “are you a makeup artist?” and his answer was “no I’m just a painter”, “but you are a makeup artist and you’re perfect for it!” That’s when he started his career in this field. “I’ve been with Essential Makeup for 5 years, I had a strong desire to bring about productive change in the company with immense potential, I thought of ideas, how to make the brand globally known” Fabrizio tells us. Attaining success was just a matter of time. Fabrizio’s vision and passion rebranded Essential Makeup’s appeal as the ‘affordable luxury makeup brand’. Much thought and care has gone in to create products that are of extremely high quality and cost-effective at the same time. Cosmetic products that are paraben-free, alcohol-free and dermatologically tested, a testimonial to the brand’s commitment to excellence. The Essential Makeup team, alongside D’andrea himself, visit hospitals several times a year, giving women fighting cancer free makeup classes, teaching them to safely apply Essential Makeup. His thoughts on makeup are simple, a subtle look is always a winner, “it’s old-fashioned to have a strong base and a full face” says Fabrizio. Nowadays everyone is opting for the ‘no-makeup’ makeup look. Achieving a freshlooking face, that does not look cakey, while still applying several products. He emphasizes that a good luminous base is a key element. His favorite Essential Makeup product is the tinted Anti-Aging BB Cream with SPF 25. In fact this was the first product that Fabrizio worked on when he joined Essential Makeup. At that time BB cream was marketed specifically targeting a younger audience, while Fabrizio wished to expand its reach to women of all ages. Seamlessly working in coordination with every department of Essential Makeup, Fabrizio is involved at all levels of research, laboratory as well as marketing. D’andrea’s Italian roots greatly helped him in broadening his career; language being a crucial component in dealing with clients; not holding back, he is also fluent in English as well as French. He does not shy away from stating that a good command of languages, cultures and general knowledge is very important in this industry, as in everything else.

Why did you choose this particular field of medicine? There is something very unique about clinical hematology; it combines the practical aspect of medicine i.e. being a physician, as well as being a pathologist, which is working in the lab. It is actually the only discipline of medicine where a physician can treat a patient face to face, make diagnostic decisions as well as work in the lab. For example, for a patient with a specific blood condition, we can do everything from A-Z; starting with diagnosis to biopsy, if needed as well as starting treatment all under one clinic. Let us start with the basics. How often should one get a regular blood checkup? Like with everything in medicine, opinions vary. Some may say that you do not need regular checkups until you reach the landmark age of 50. But in some cases, such as diabetes, regular checkups are crucial to detect intake of wrong medication or dosage, which could cause irreparable side effects, hence requiring regular monitoring. My personal thought is that if a person is young and healthy with no history of significant family health issues, regular checkups should start at 50. It is difficult to generalize as there is no plan that fits all. If a person is asymptomatic then they should take a blood test every three to five years. What are the most common blood disorders in our region? The majority of the population of this country are of young age, so the main problem of blood nature would be anemia. Iron deficiency by far is the most popular. This is mostly because of the type of food we eat. Also, the social aspect, such as multiple pregnancies, is also a reason. Blood loss as a potentially serious cause of Anaemia that has to be ruled out. Another is hereditary anemia, like thalassemia and Sickle cell Disease. What are the first signs that show if a person is anemic? The main symptoms of significant anemia are caused by problems with oxygen delivery. So the patient may feel like he or she is lacking energy, is always tired and sleepy. Another side effect in cases of severe anemia would be breathlessness on exertion. For iron deficiency anemia, one will notice a negative impact on the health of the skin, hair and nails. What precautions should we take to prevent anemia? Making sure the diet is balanced, making sure diet contain

the essential minerals. For patients who have any one of the symptoms mentioned above, the patient should seek help. What other blood related diseases can be affecting a person’s daily life? Anemia is one main aspect, which is a problem with red blood cells. When it comes to blood platelets, both low and high levels have their own consequences. Also, white blood cells’ main role is to defend our bodies from infections; if someone has very low levels of white blood cells they are more prone to have an infection. What are your thoughts on multivitamins? Could they help with these problems? Generally speaking, if a person is eating a healthy diet, they would not need supplements. That is not always the case, unfortunately, as there are other aspects such as absorption. For example, tea interferes with the absorption of iron. Vitamin D deficiency is really important to check, as low levels of vitamin D can cause depression, weight gain, and loss of bone density. Some studies show that taking Folic Acid as a supplement can delay Alzheimer’s disease. Also, really good supplements to take are Omega 3s which tend to reduce the risk of heart diseases. the talk - page 99

Juicing, what you need to know. We’ve been hearing all about juicing and how it’s a trend, everyone snapchatting their green juice while running in yoga pants. Eating a plant-based diet is linked to lower risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers. But only one in 10 adults gets their daily recommended 5-7 servings of vegetables and fruit. Juicing is a fun and easy way to add more fresh produce to your diet. Juicing a variety of vegetables and fruit can be a powerful source of providing oneself with a higher dose of vitamins and nutrients, rather than eating one type of produce. Juicing floods the body with micronutrients that are easily digestible, so your body will get more of what it needs with less food. A juice diet can also lead to significant weight loss, especially when included as part of a reboot. Some juices that can be beneficial are green juices (mostly vegetables mixed with a green apple and some ginger), red juice (the name makes sense because the main ingredient is beetroot), and the immunity drink which is citrus and turmeric. Of course, we won’t forget the usual fruit juices that are always packed with vitamins.

ANGELA CHARLES The lure of the coast from Dorset to Cornwall is constant for Angela Charles. The contrast of the peacefulness of the landscape and the sea alongside its untamed wildness and intensity holds perpetual appeal. “The acquisition of a campervan four years ago has made escaping to the sea even easier and allowed for spontaneous trips both locally to Dorset as well as to Cornwall to develop my work.” When it comes to art, Angela doesn’t stray from home. Born just outside of Brighton in 1966 Angela Charles studied at Worthing College of Art from 1983 - 1986. She then went on to study for a BA Hons in Fine Art (Textiles) at Goldsmiths College, University of London, graduating in 1989. Angela Charles moved from Brighton to Crewkerne, Somerset in 2001, working part-time as a gallery curator. As a painter her reputation has grown since first exhibiting in 1989. Her first one-person show was at Sherborne House, Dorset in 2003 and since then she has exhibited throughout the UK. Her works evolve from rudimentary pen sketches and written notes about the landscape, the light and the sea. These records act as a catalyst for her paintings which, rather than a direct response to a certain place, represent a memory of a location and the felt experience of being there. However, in some of the works she says she becomes so absorbed by the painting process that little is recognizable from the original sketch! Angela Charles states, “Working on spray-primed aluminum and wooden boards, which allow for every texture to be my own, I build up layers of sanded-down acrylic. The layers are often wiped away forcefully with cloths or my fists and pierced with marks made by pencils or dentist tools. Through areas of calm and yet moments of frantic mark making, the resulting paintings reveal my sense of awe at the South West coast.” Building layers of colours in her work, creating a smooth, yet richly textured surface; sometimes revealing different coloured layers and sometimes keeping them hidden; a bit like the geology of the Dorset and Somerset coastlines Angela is inspired by.

When did you start working in the fashion industry and how did it start? It started when I launched my first blog ‘highstreetq8’, way back in 2006, it was dedicated to street-style. The blog provided me with a platform to break social barriers, walk up to random strangers, photograph them, write about their outfits, and to basically have a positive conversation. It really had more to do with social commentary than fashion, to be honest; I focused on how fashion is a great way to showcase individuality. More importantly, I used the blog as a means to connect with complete strangers, to compliment and encourage, something we do not do often in the Arab society. At the same time, I was lucky enough to shift my day job into the fashion industry, working for Topshop, one of my favorite high-street brands, and over time worked for several major retailers, high-street to high-end, from marketing to buying, my last role being Fashion Director for Al Ostoura, heading purchasing of over 130 brands. It has been a lot of hard work as it is a very tough industry, trust me; over four months of travel last year, despite the demands of fashion shows and Caviar Kaspia dinners, I was working 14 hour days, 7 days a week. I am grateful to have amassed a wealth of information and knowledge over the years through my interactions. What do you think of the current state of the fashion industry? The luxury fashion industry is changing rapidly on so many different levels. The entire landscape has shifted from what the consumer wants, to the sheer quantity and speed at which things are moving. Today’s consumer is spoiled for choice, and is so much savvier, armed with a wealth of information at the touch of their fingertips. The industry has shifted from one driven by art and creativity, to one run by, essentially, bankers only interested in exponential sale and growth. “Slow fashion” is a much hyped term now (a term used to describe fashion that takes longer to produce, has fewer pieces in the collection, made to last for years). It’s ironic since this was the original ethos of the luxury fashion industry. Now it is a slave to newness, to reproducing the same thing, sold last season, in 15 different colors, producing it so fast that quality and creativity go out the window, leading to deterioration of ‘luxury’ fashion labels to the point where they are not that different from high-street labels. The end consumer is left questioning paying a premium for something that is no longer well made, creative, original and most importantly exclusive! What do you think about the fashion industry here in Kuwait? Fashion is a unique commodity with an end goal to showcase consumer’s personality and individuality. Think of it like this, you will definitely go try out a new cuisine your friends are raving about; however, if all your friends the talk - page 115
the talk - page 116
start wearing the same bag or the same perfume, as an individual you may get a bit turned off by it, especially if you were paying a premium to purchase something special. It is also a shame, that there are only a handful of local retailers and designers that stand out, and we have not done much to push the industry forward or to create a real outlet for creativity and design. If you were to change something about it, what would it be? The issue is always one of passion and knowledge, or lack thereof. We have a severe deficit of both of these when it comes to the fashion industry in Kuwait. Its’ not just the influencers who could care less about the designer behind Balenciaga, or the inspiration behind Dries Van Noten’s SS17 collection, or why is it that everything Phoebe Philo touches turns to gold to mercilessly be copied and pasted by everyone from H&M to fellow creative directors. I am talking about the retailers as well, who need to tune up their game from customer service to offering a satisfying consumer experience. I would also change the intensely damaging proclivity of the Kuwaiti population towards copy/paste, it is so inherent in our culture and stems again from lack of passion and knowledge. It makes me so irate when I see designers such as Najeeba Hayat (creator of Luidmilla), Noor Al Sabah’s Ecru or Razan Al Azzouni’s work being so flippantly ripped off. Describe your personal style. There was a time I would have offered a considered response like “Audrey Hepburn meets Harajuku Hello Kitty”. Now, I look for comfort, I want to feel good about what I am wearing; it may be that it is ethically sourced, or because I know the designer produced something original and creative. I can say that I definitely care less about trends than I used to, but I think that is more an age thing than a style choice.
When it comes to my personal style, I am different in the sense that I do not strive for perfection or even close to it when I am dressing. I do take the industry very seriously, but not when it comes down to my own purchases and personal style at all. I want to have fun with fashion, to take risks. It goes back to the fact that fashion has lost that sense of exclusivity for me, there are only a few brands that I feel make clothes for those with an artistic temperament. I do not dress differently for the sake of looking like an “individual”. I care about designers who produce beautiful, well made products: Dries Van Noten, The Row and Razan Al Azzouni are three such labels. Who is your role model in the industry, and why? I have many, I respect anyone genuinely spreading passion and knowledge about this industry. I have utmost respect for the “greats”, Franca Sozzani, Diana Vreeland, Dries Van Noten etc etc. Specifically, I love Leandra Medine as she has created a platform for the “smart” fashion girl and is always a voice of reality and individuality. I love Ascia Faraj for being honest, raw and creating such cool and creative businesses like MESEOULKOOL and DESERTBABY. I adore Dana Hourani, who is focused on creating aspirational content that is more art than just an Instagram OOTD post. I love Anum from Desert Mannequin for her wealth of knowledge of the industry, her willingness to collaborate and share that passion with everyone she meets. I really enjoy watching people like Demna, taking the fashion industry for a very polyester driven ride; Delpozo for working hard to produce beautiful pieces every season; Natasha Zinko for just being so fearlessly brazen. I really admire a lot of people, there is no one role model or person I can really pin point to. What are you currently working on? I am working on a super cool project that will launch upcoming February. I hope this project fills a lot of gaps in the fashion industry, both globally and regionally. Stay tuned! the talk - page 117

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS Officially Breaks The Nürburgring Record Porsche has set a new record for road legal sports cars on the famous 20.6-kilometre Nürburgring Nordschleife in the 911 GT2 RS on September 20. The record time of 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds was achieved in the presence of a notary and surpassed even Porsche’s own expectations. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT Cars said, “At the start of the development process, we set ourselves a lap time target for the GT2 RS of less than 7 minutes and 5 seconds. The credit for beating this target by 17.7 seconds goes to our development engineers, mechanics and drivers, who demonstrated an exceptionally strong team performance. This result makes it official: The GT2 RS is not only the most powerful, but also the fastest 911 ever built”.

This record was not a one-off: Lars Kern (30) from Germany and Nick Tandy (32) from the UK broke the previous record for road legal sports cars (6 minutes, 52.01 seconds) in their first attempt and subsequently finished five laps, each coming in under 6 minutes, 50 seconds. Andreas Preuninger, Director GT Model Line, says: “It’s not just the record time achieved by the GT2 RS that demonstrates the vehicle’s class, but also its consistent performance in every lap. We’re particularly proud of the fact that this was achieved with two different vehicles and two different drivers, as this underlines the GT2 RS’s ability to reproduce this record result over and over again”. Porsche factory driver Tandy travelled straight from a six-hour race in Austin, Texas to the Nürburgring, swapping the Le Mans prototype Porsche 919 Hybrid for the 515-kW 911 GT2 RS with Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres in impressive style. It was Lars Kern, a Porsche test driver by trade with a passion for racing, who ultimately set the final record time. Alongside the Carrera Cup Australia, Kern regularly competes in the VLN Endurance Championship on the Nürburgring and knows the Nordschleife inside out. The subsequent the talk - page 119

record lap began at 7:11 pm and finished 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds later in ideal outdoor conditions. As is customary for record drives, the time was measured along the 20.6-kilometre stretch. The vehicle’s average speed was 184.11 km/h. The fastest, most powerful road-legal 911 celebrated its world premiere at the Festival of Speed in Goodwood in the UK at the end of June. At the heart of this highperformance sports car is a 700 hp flat-six biturbo engine, weighing in at 1,470 kg with a full fuel tank. The lightweight rear-wheel drive two-seater coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, achieving a top speed of 340 km/h with its motorsportderived drive technology. The new 911 GT2 RS beats its 3.6-litre predecessor by 80 hp and achieves a torque of 750 Nm that’s an increase of 50 Nm.

The starting point of the collection is a narrative between aesthetic codes and time settings carried out through de Vincenzo’s favorite expressive medium; fabric. Relying on man-made, intensely wrought-out, unexpected and ultimately playful fabrications, he depicts an image of a hypothetical future, as it would have been conceived by someone living in the past. The quantum leap defines a rather peculiar idea of ladylike dressing - slightly lysergic and decidedly off-kilter.
Creating a conjunction between seemingly incompatible elements is a main creative drive for Marco de Vincenzo, this season. The bigger the gap, the quirkier and more personal the outcome.
Taking a geometrical approach with his collections, Marco de Vincenzo showcases an overuse of symmetry to make a bold statement. Housed exclusively in Kuwait at Harvey Nichols Kuwait, the Italian brand plays it far from safe and assures the finest craftsmanship amidst its funkiness.Â
Accessories, too, are a dialogue of opposites - pearls ingrained in plastic, sneakers squeezed into ballerina flats, stockings decorated in painterly flowers. The synthetic pleasure of time-traveling is extended to menswear, as workman overalls are paired with garish furs and braided velvet sandals.
The friction between familiar shapes of iconic classicism and unexpected surfaces of freewheeling experimentalism creates an electric glitch with a cartoonish tingle. The repertoire includes all the elements that are traditionally associated with the idea of appropriate feminine elegance - demure blouses and pleated skirts, fur coats and tartan, pencil skirts, flat shoes and stranded pearls - yet nothing looks like it is supposed to. Tradition is put through a time machine; synthetic furs are covered in futuristic landscape patterns or glistening PVC fringes; pleats add geometric depth; petals swarm on tops, skirts get a sidereal metallic sheen and leopard spots turn into 3D decorations.
