MAY Dearly Beloved, I’d choose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality, I’d find you and I’d choose you. For better or for worse. For richer or for poorer. In sickness and in health. I choose you to be no other than yourself. Loving what I know of you and trusting who you will become. I choose you and I’ll choose you over and over and over again. Without a pause, without a doubt, in a heartbeat, I’ll keep choosing you. In this world and in the next; if I could choose again, I’d still choose you. To always and forever, with you!

Sincerely, Hind Nassar

JIMMY CHOO The Bridal Collection

Jimmy Choo is a 21st century luxury accessories brand, with shoes at its heart, offering an empowered sense of glamour and a playfully daring spirit. The brand traces its roots to a bespoke shoemaker named Jimmy Choo, based in the East End of London in the early 1990s, who catered to the global jet set, including Princess Diana. The Jimmy Choo Company was founded in 1996, with Mr. Choo’s niece, Sandra Choi, who had been heading up design in the East End atelier, coming on board as Creative Director, a position she holds to this day. Mr. Choo departed the company in 2001.

The stylish cut, fashionable design, and exceptional Italian craftsmanship struck a chord with a sophisticated clientele, and the first collection enjoyed immediate success. With a goal of creating a global luxury business, Jimmy Choo attracted outside investment and the company embarked on a significant expansion across product categories, channels and geographies. A pioneer in the art of celebrity dressing, Jimmy Choo was among the first to bring shoes and handbags to Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the ideal runway for the brand. Today, Jimmy Choo can be seen on style icons from celebrities to royalty, musicians to heads of state. The brand’s reputation as a celebrity favourite helped to fuel its rapid expansion. Its iconography was further defined by the bold and dramatic advertising portraying glamorous but strong women in towering heels and luxurious handbags, captured by photographers such as Mario Testino, Inez and Vinoodh, Peter Lindbergh and Steven Meisel and Terry Richardson.

Retail development has been integral to the company’s strategy. The first Jimmy Choo store was opened in 1996 on Motcomb Street in London, complementing a distribution in some of the most prestigious multi-brand stores in the world. Two years later, the company expanded to the US, opening two stores in New York City and Beverly Hills. International expansion continued with Jimmy Choo securing locations in the premiere luxury shopping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities including Sloane Street and Bond Street in London, Avenue Montaigne in Paris,Via Condotti in Rome, Madison Avenue in New York, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, and Ginza in Tokyo. Today, Jimmy Choo encompasses a complete luxury accessories brand. Women’s shoes remain the core of the product offer, alongside handbags, small leather goods, scarves, sunglasses, eyewear, belts, fragrance and men’s shoes. Pierre Denis was appointed Chief Executive Officer in July 2012 and the creative direction is overseen by Sandra Choi. Together, they share a vision to create one of the world’s most treasured luxury brands.

THETALK / May / 2015

This season Jimmy Choo has further enhanced the Bridal Collection with the introduction of the Made-to-Order service, offering brides an alluring suite of signature styles that can be custom made in a myriad of colors, textures and finishes. Additionally, for the last word in personalization brides are able to customize the sole of their shoe with initials or numbers. Perfect for the bride or members of the bridal party, this service is the ultimate way to commemorate the day and create a bespoke memento. Ideally suited for brides looking to add the extra special details to the memorable occasion, the Made-to-Order service allows for your dream shoe to become a reality, the tradition of Made-to-Order shoes can be traced back to the roots of the brand and has continued quietly throughout the company’s evolution as it has grown from a small London atelier to a global luxury fashion brand. Creative Director Sandra Choi has selected her

favorite Jimmy Choo silhouettes for inclusion in the Made-to-Order program, choosing the time-honored classics perfectly suited for customization such as the ANOUK, LANCE, XENIA and TITE in varying heel heights. “Throughout the years at Jimmy Choo, we set out to maintain the same level of personalized service and attention to detail as when we were crafting shoes one pair at a time, for one client at a time. Bringing this Made-to-Order service directly to our customers in our stores allows us to faithfully preserve our heritage of personalization, and allow every woman to have a bespoke pair of Jimmy Choo shoes.” Sandra Choi, Creative Director. Apart from the Made-to-Order service for brides, this season’s bridal fashion collection includes a wide array of sandals, pumps and flats in lace, sparkling crystal, stand-out glitter fabric, and simple satins. Bridal evening bags complement

the collection in sleek clutches; jewel encrusted minaudieres and elegant wristlets. Along with the newly introduced Made-toOrder service to make the bride feel extra special Jimmy Choo offers a full range of services including Champagne shopping days for bridal parties and shoe re-colouring; both before the ceremony to match the dress, and after the ceremony to ensure the newlywed can wear the shoes again. Jimmy Choo’s Creative Director Sandra Choi

S

andra Choi was named sole creative director of Jimmy Choo in 2013 and has spent her entire career at the company, founded by her uncle Jimmy. She was born on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom, where she lived until she was eight years old before moving to Hong Kong for five years to live with her grandparents. On her return to the UK, Choi developed an interest in fashion and completed a foundation course. She began to help out at her uncle’s business in 1989, where she was immediately fascinated by the reality of the industry. In an exclusive interview for THETALK bridal issue, Choi told us all about bridal shoes that are specifically geared to the big day. Who is Sandra Choi, in three words? Designer. Creative. Mother Tell us about your passion for designing shoes. When did you know you had a talent in designing footwear? I always had a keen interest in fashion and an early appreciation for tailoring and architectural design in ready to wear. I remember to this day being struck by an early Galliano coat from one of his first collections that I saw in a magazine. It was deconstructed but the detail and tailoring were so precise, like nothing I had ever seen before. That coat ignited something in me. I was itching to leave the Isle of Wight by the time I finished school and a teacher at my school submitted an application on my behalf for a Foundation course at CSM and I got in! I saw studying in London for my foundation degree at CSM as my way out. That is when I moved in with my Aunt and Uncle, Jimmy. Jimmy had established his bespoke shoe business in Hackney and after 22

THETALK / May / 2015

college and in the holidays I would help in his studio, I found it inspiring to be able to actually live and breathe the whole journey of a shoe. I then applied for the Fashion degree course and got a place but after a term I decided I wanted to pursue the opportunity I had to work full time alongside my uncle full time so left my course and that’s how it all begun. How do you describe the inspirations behind your designs? I would describe my inspirations as eclectic. Inspiration comes from everywhere so it is hard to pin point. It might be from photography, art, music, nature or something I see when I am

travelling or just someone’s great style in the street. My inspirations are varied and constant. For example SS15 was very much based on tribal prints and abstract art while the central theme for AW15 is ballet combined with elements of bondage. How has your work evolved over the years? It is very much about evolving the brand for the next stage in our journey, we have created a strong platform that works and now we need to nurture it and grow it for the next stage continuing to push boundaries innovating on our fashion collections. Last year was pivotal in terms

“Personalized bridal shoes are the biggest trend” of introducing new elements. We unveiled our new global store concept created in partnership with the London based David Collins Design Studio, the concept allows our Men’s and Women’s collections to sit side by side. We also launched a collection called Choo.08 which highlighted a more rebellious and off duty aesthetic that had always been present in the collections with our biker boots but we wanted to really highlight it. The collection represents the evolution of the Jimmy Choo woman, she is leading a demanding life juggling many different roles, she is on the go all day and needs to be both stylish and able to move freely. I love all-out glamour, and Jimmy Choo has become synonymous with the maximum impact, attention-grabbing stiletto which we celebrate and continue to reinterpret with every collection. I know, from my own busy life, and from speaking to other women, that we also crave that same glamour, attitude and beguilement in shoes that we can run around in all day. We also launched our Made to Order service which offers signature styles of shoes that can be customized in an extensive range of materials and colors for a completely bespoke shoe finished with letter or number monogramming on the sole of the shoes for the ultimate in personalization. In your opinion, what are the types of shoes every woman should own? The ones that make her happy! Everyone needs a pointy toe heeled pump; we offer this style in a variety of heights ranging from ANOUK in 120mm to AZA in 35mm. A strappy, statement evening sandal like LANCE, high boot, a pair of biker boots, a pretty pair of decorative flats like GALA and a pair of flat sandals, metallics work well as they go with everything. How do you feel about designing bridal shoes? How different are they compared to regular shoes? It feels so special that brides choose to wear us on such an important day. With the bridal offering, I try to design shoes that people will be happy with for a

long time. People have to remember these photos and memories will last a lifetime! However, now with our Made-to-Order bridal service the control is firmly back with the bride and they have the chance to create their dream shoe. Is there a criterion you use when designing wedding shoes, and if so, can you describe it? When I design I think purely from a style point of view, I dream big and then refine the practical functions of the shoe to fit within the design. However, for wedding shoes I believe in choosing classic styles. I love a more traditional and timeless approach to the day, which is why I have chosen our classic signature styles for the Made-To-Order service. Comfort is also key. There is a mathematical skill to ensuring styles are comfortable but still elegant. What are the basics any bride should consider when selecting her wedding shoes? I think it is very important to go for simple glamour, people often forget that the pictures you have taken on your wedding day will last a lifetime. The most important thing is to choose shoes that complement the dress rather than compete with it and to make sure you feel like yourself. I love the pointy toe silhouettes of Alina and Abel. My key piece of advice to brides is to practice in your shoes before the big day and find the heel height that works for you. It would be awful be in pain on your wedding day! How high is too high and how low is too low for bridal heels? You have to know your personal limits, what you can move freely in and walk effortlessly in. There is nothing worse than seeing a bride who can’t walk properly in her heels, it ruins the whole look. It is about practicing in them and knowing what your ideal height is, everyone has a different limit. I know mine is 100mm. We ensure that we

offer diverse heel heights across our signature silhouettes so you can tailor to your personal preferences choosing anything from a 35mm kitten heel to a 120mm stiletto. A pair of heels has the power to transform, to enhance your posture and increase your confidence but only if you can walk in them. What is the latest trend in bridal shoes? Personalization. There is definitely an increased desire for bespoke pieces in the same way you have a dress made for you. Our Made to Order service offers brides the chance to create their dream shoe completing it with monogrammed lettering or date as a lasting memento. Metallics have also been increasingly popular; they add an extra shine and modern feel to the look but can still be classic styles. Describe the decision making process – in terms of styles, colors, and materials to make available – when it comes to launching the Jimmy Choo bespoke service in 2014? It was easy – I wanted to focus on the time honored iconic deigns that our customers keep returning to but offer them the chance to pick their ideal heel height and color. I wanted to return to our roots and offer our customers the chance to have something unique. Made-To-Order is part of our history and reminds me of the time when we started as a tiny atelier creating bespoke designs. What is unique about the Jimmy Choo Made-to-Order service for a bride looking to find the perfect pair? No other brand offers brides the chance to do this and what bride doesn’t want a pair of bespoke shoes created especially for her. Brides can also monogram the sole with characters or a date that is personal to them, meaning we can create a completely unique shoe just for you that no one else in the world has.

The Veil

What you need to know

about The Bridal veil Veils are in, and the trend for veiled brides is here to stay. Those that choose to wear a veil covering their face really create that special moment when the groom removes the veil at the altar. It’s a beautiful tradition and a key moment of the ceremony. One thing you need to remember when considering trends in veils is that the veil is a timeless piece of the wedding attire that has remained ever present over the years, something so universal that individual and unique styles are worn in every culture as part of the wedding ritual. Here are some tips that will help you make the right choice. 1. When it comes to choosing the ideal veil, brides need to think about how long they want to wear it. Normally it’s removed after the photo session following the ceremony but before sitting down to the wedding breakfast or cocktail party, although this is a completely personal decision, depending on the bride’s comfort. 2. A long veil is usually removed straight after the ceremony, it certainly won’t be worn for any dancing, while a short veil or hairpiece can be worn right up until you’re sat down at the table – assuming it is removed before eating, an important rule of wedding etiquette. 3. Always remember that a bridal gown, especially a more intricate design with brocades and crystals, will already be very striking and showy, so you need to maintain equilibrium with a more somber and simple piece, without much detail.

36

THETALK / May / 2015

4. In regards to color, always ensure that it is of the same color, or a lighter tone than the dress. If the main look of the bride is an inherited veil then it’s best to choose a design of a similar style, avoiding darker tones. 5. Ensure that a long veil doesn’t interrupt the flow of the dress. Long veils generally complement well any style of dress, while a shorter veil can create an undesired visual effect, cutting the silhouette into two parts. The best thing is to try various styles with your dress to avoid any style clashes.

to-do list

10 things every

bride should do on her wedding day There are just so many tasks to complete that the little things can easily be overlooked. Let’s talk about what little things brides often forget to do the night before or the day of their weddings so that you can make yourself a list and remember! Use the restroom Wedding ceremonies are longer than you think, and when nerves enter the picture, because it might be hard to “hold it” throughout the ceremony, make it a priority to use the ladies’ room before walking down the aisle. Your bladder will be eternally grateful. Eat Many brides are so busy on the day of the wedding that they forget to eat. Don’t let this be you. Shape your eyebrows On the morning of your wedding, pluck any stray eyebrow hair, having well-shaped eyebrow is essential to looking your best on the big day. Don’t stress on the weather The number one wedding day detail you can’t control is rain. So if it rains or gets dusty, embrace it. Don’t be in charge Without a doubt, there will be out-of-towners or distant friends that need info on the day-of. Don’t let that be your job. Delegate that task to one of your bridesmaids or even your favorite aunt, who may have offered to help out. Don’t answer your phone Yes, it’s tempting to take every call, but try making your maid of honor or day-of coordinator your secretary for the day. Chances are, she can resolve any issues without your having to

answer every single last phone call. Don’t pack for your honeymoon Ideally, you would have packed for your honeymoon several days before the wedding. If you are not quite finished and you are leaving that night, delegate the task to a close friend. If you’re not leaving until the next day, put it out of your mind for the day and do it after the wedding. Don’t wear your shoes for the first time Take the time to break in your shoes several weeks before the wedding day. Even if you’re not planning to wear 5-inch heels, you will want to make sure you’re not setting yourself up for blisters. Break them in by putting them on and walking around your house for an hour or two several times until they feel good. And always bring a backup pair of sandals or ballet flats just in case.

Pick the right metal for your man...

The whole point of having a wedding ring is to wear it. Make sure you get a ring that he will not be afraid wear and that he will feel comfortable wearing. You may be surprised to learn that lots of men are choosing to move beyond the traditional gold and silver wedding bands and are going with the new metal options that technology has made available in recent years. These high technology metals such as the Tungsten carbide and Titanium options are becoming more favorable because they are stronger, more scratch resistant, non-allergic and are typically available at a lower price point than Gold and Silver. More and more ring styles are being made available in these new hard metal options too.

Bridal makeup tips by Bobbi Brown

Use a moisturizer that will prepare the skin makeup. Avoid sunblocks and sunscreens that can give a “flash off” to makeup. They reflect too much light under flash photography, resulting in an over-exposed shot. Emphasize the eyes by brightening any darkness under them with corrector and concealer.

Bridal makeup should be special. On her wedding day, every bride should look like herself at her most beautiful. It is not a time to try a look that is very trendy or radically different from her usual style. According to Bobbi Brown, wedding makeup must be long lasting, look amazing in photographs and be timeless. Every bride should love how she looks in the pictures ten years from now. Makeup rules If possible, do a consultation and run-through of the makeup before the wedding day. Reserve an appointment for about four to six weeks prior to the wedding day to design and practice the look. The wedding day is also special for family and friends, so consider booking makeup appointments for the whole bridal party. Bridal makeup needs to have enough color to compensate for the whiteness of the dress. Remember, there’s big difference between everyday clothes and a wedding dress, so there should be a difference in the makeup, too. Start by making sure the skin looks even and smooth and then add color to give cheeks and lips a glow. Finish with eyes that are designed but not overdone. To avoid feeling rushed,, allow forty-five minutes to an hour for makeup application on the wedding day. Natural light is best for makeup application. If possible, set up your makeup station near a window, or use a super bright lamp.

52

THETALK / May / 2015

Flash photography emphasize pink tones, be sure to even out the skin with a yellowtoned foundation. Start around the nose and mouth, where there’s redness and then blend out to the rest of the face. Blend well, especially at the corners of the eyes, since cameras pick up visible makeup lines.

To make lip color last longer, line and fill in lips with lip pencil before applying the lipstick.

Set concealer and foundation with a sheer loose powder. Powder applied with a powder applied with a powder puff assures amazing wearability and reduces unwanted shine – a musthave look for pictures.

Define brows with a soft matte shadow that matches the hair color.

If the wedding gown has an open neckline, warm up the neck and chest with a dusting of bronzing powder. It will ensure that the face and body have a balanced tone. For a pretty flush that lasts, use two shades of blush. Start with a neutral shade, and apply it on the apples of the cheeks, blending up into the hairline then downward to soften. Finish with a pop of brighter blush just on the apples of the cheeks. Balm or shimmer can be layered for a highlighting effect. Neutral, brown and pale lip colors look washed out in photographs, so choose a lipstick that’s one or two shades brighter than what you normally wear. For those who normally wear a neutral hue, it should be worn as a base, with a pink or rose color on top. For those who normally wear dark lipstick, use that as the base, and apply a brighter pink on top to give the color a lift. Pinks, roses, and plums are great choices for brides.

Use a flat white shadow as a highlighter in the brow bone for those with light skin. A vanilla shade better suits deeper complexion. Use matte eye shadows, as they won’t reflect light or look too shiny in photographs. Define the eyes with a crease color, but avoid using a color that’s too dense or dark, as it can detract from the eyes themselves. Use a water-resistant liner that can withstand tears. If you prefer to line with shadow, make it last longer by applying it with a slightly damp eyeliner brush. Use an eyelash curler before applying the first coat of mascara. Choose mascara that’s waterproof. It lasts longer and withstands tears. After applying all the eye makeup, finish with a highlighter shade on the brow bone to make the yes pop. Rub your finger in a light matte shade, and pat lightly on the outer corner of the brow bone.

Illogically Logical Zeina Mokaddam

Author of “Illogical Logic of My Life” How would you describe your book to someone who has not read it yet? It is not your typical narrative book – nor is it your typical autobiography. It poses more questions than it gives you answers – it gives you the room to think. I personally always loved existentialism and the absurd and when you are a person who adheres to these philosophies, firstly, you do not accept people’s forced logic on you – you question it, and secondly, you definitely never allow yourself to impose your logic on others. The never-ending quest for knowledge and life is regarded as a journey. Being human, we go through a lot of similar stages on that journey and, while we often feel alone on our stages, the most comforting thought is that we’re never alone. I wanted to portray that in my book.

T

he title itself might make you wonder about logic and its illogical status. The experience of reading a slim volume with so many interesting animations is very tempting from first glance, and as you flip the pages of the little red book, you begin to touch upon big things in life. You also become aware of the fact that you are not alone and that logic and illogic are resilient and flexible just as you are. In a very insightful TALK with Zeina Mokaddam – Managing Director of PH7 Group and author of “The Illogical Logic of My Life”, she shared her thoughts, rationalization and perspectives about logic and its other face.

54

THETALK / May / 2015

Other than experience in life, whether failure, struggle and different stages of success, what exactly inspired you to get started with your book? First, I have a problem with the word ‘failure’ – there is a learning curve and no such thing as failure. I have always stood strong in my belief that humans should not be judged by their successes neither by their failures - because none of the two is a constant state; you have to experience both in life. Granted, we all love to celebrate success while most of us don’t react well to failure. However, if we are to analyze failure, it always stems from not living up to our own expectations or someone else’s expectations of us. But what if the expectations were not realistic to begin with? And what if setting the bar too high is the only way to evolve as a human race? Wouldn’t that mean that we are bound to fail and our duty is not to stop at failure but keep trying over and over again till we succeed? Why do we call it failure as if it is final? Is success final? Never! In my opinion, as long as you are alive, you cannot fail, you are

always given the opportunity to try again till you succeed. How do you define failure then? Failure and success are not destinations – there is a mindset through which we look at things and it is usually preconceived because of our environment, our teachings or our parents, people perceive situations differently. There are no failures in my life – there are experiences and expectations that I have set for myself and I was not able to meet. Did it hurt? Yes, of course there is pain but there is no failure; and one ultimately learns how to deal with the pain and learns how to grow out of the pain stronger and wiser. At the age of 8, my best friend’s daughter was able to summarize the whole experience of the “Illogical Logic of My Life”. After reading the book, and in her own words, she said “Life is full of ups and downs and we are okay with it”. And this is really the message that I am hoping to convey, add to it that there will always be unanswered questions, and we are ok with that as well. How do you define logic? That’s a very interesting question. I believe each one of us operates from our own point of view and people are argumentative by nature. In my opinion, a truly logical human being is one who argues his point of view while being open to suggestions. Life indeed is not as evident as 1+1=2. When does logic become illogical? Aha! This is the funny part!! Logic becomes illogical when you have to accept things as they are and stop questioning! And you have to in this life!! There are so many things that are not explainable and you need to come to terms with this fact. You need to surrender. Life’s logic dictates that you accept the illogic! This is the epiphany of the ant.

“The illogical logic is when you are forced to stop your logic and accept the illogic” What is the story of the ant? While doing my masters at the age of 37, my psychology professor was teaching us how to respond to a depressed adolescent who is questioning the fairness of life by responding “Who said that life should be fair? It is the way it is. Unfair. Now deal with it”. That sentence jolted my senses! It was an epiphany!! Most adolescents wonder ‘why is life so unfair?’ and some of us struggle with this question our entire lives. Soon after that, I had the episode with the aunt. It is a true story by the way. I did try to communicate with the ant on that day! And it was on that day that I truly understood the meaning of acceptance and acceptance. We all have a million questions in our heads, no one is owed any answers. It is the way it is. Life gives, life takes... acceptance is a very big step in a human’s growth cycle. Reading your book, one is likely to touch certainty and uncertainty together, were you intentionally encouraging readers to start asking questions instead of giving them answers? The oxymoron of life is in the title of the book, and who am I to give answers!? As a human being who always likes to analyze and see things through different perspectives, I never accepted someone else’s logic so how can I impose mine on others. To each his logic, his understanding and beliefs. You combined philosophy and logic and presented them in most of the pages of your book, do you resort to them in your life situations? Extensively! This is why I added the humorous element to the book, because I believe that if you remove the humor from such a matter, it becomes too heavy and too complicated. Life is complicated and heavy and I believe it is our responsibility to make it lighter and more enjoyable. Life is also very abundant and offers us so many opportunities –

there is so much beauty in this life. It is also very paradoxical; there is everything and its contrary. It is very interesting to pose the question of who you want to be in this life at an early age because it will set you on the course of life, so why not address those questions in a humorous way. Would you rather find the answers to your questions or keep wondering? I think one should try to find the answers as soon as possible because it helps us find peace. As long as we are alive, however, we should always be open to other suggestions even while having our own answers. Do not fight people’s answers, but if you find better answers, follow them. Life does not have to stop at one stage; it is a continuous evolution. What was the most joyful part of working on your book? Two moments were extremely joyful for me. One was when I found out how I wanted to write my book and the second was when I started working on the illustrations.

Do you plan to launch new books any soon? Hopefully yes. I have written an existentialist play a while ago and I would like to share it with the world next year. If the “Illogical Logic of my Life” resonates well with my readers, I do not mind creating a series that compliments the first edition of it. As you can see, there are so many other elements in human life that I did not touch upon and did not dwell on a single subject. I might consider this in future books.

How to make your own wedding bouquet Making your own wedding bouquet may seem like a big undertaking but it not as hard as it sounds, it’s also a great way to make sure your bouquet is exactly what you want for your big day. Here is a step by step for how you can construct your dream wedding bouquet starting with a shopping trip at the flower shop. One thing to keep in mind is to make sure it’s secure as this may take some practice, but it’s worth it since your bouquet needs to make it throughout your whole wedding day! Happy making! You will need: Twine - Scissors - Clippers - Flowers - Rubber bands Blush hydrangeas, blush roses, purple thistle, baby’s breath, eucalyptus and some soft leafy greens

3

Bind the hydrangea stems loosely together with twine.

7 Trim the thistle blossoms so that the stem is long enough to be secure in the bouquet handle (about 3 – 4 inches). Then slide the thistle into the hydrangea blossoms so that they rest on the petal.

4

Slide the Rose stems into the center of the hydrangea bunch.

8

Add sprigs of baby’s breath to the bouquet for extra flourish if you want! Baby’s Breath looks great in photographs and smells faintly of honey.

1

Cut the hydrangea stems to the desired length of your bouquet handle.

5

Trim the eucalyptus so that you have about 6- 8 inches of bare stem.

9

Tie a rubber band around the top of the base of the stems. Then tuck the ends of the leafy greens around the outside of the bouquet.

2

Cut three rose stems to one inch or so longer than the hydrangea stems.

6 Bind the rose and hydrangea stems about 3 inches from the stem ends, and slide the eucalyptus under the twine, evenly around the outside of the bunch.

10 Holding the twine tight with one hand, wrap the base of your bouquet with the other hand. When you get to the base use the extra end of twine to make a single tight knot and then simply trim and tuck the ends in. WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

The art of Photography

Ahmed Al Muslemani & Adel Jadaan

P

hotography is merely about capturing the best moments of all occasions and presenting a face, an idea, a product or a simply any item in its true and pure shape. Fusion for Media and Advertising is a newly established business that offers photography services as part of its advertising facilities. The company also provides private photo sessions, video shooting and events coverage introducing creative ideas and effective photography techniques. Co-owner Ahmed Al Muslemani and photographer Adel Jadaan shared their perception of photography and their idea of the perfect shot in the following interview with THETALK. Tell me a bit about your company. Ahmed Al Muslemani: Fusion is a media and advertising company which was established 6 months ago. The concept was built by a group of 4 young men. We thought of exploiting photography and video shooting in creating advertising campaigns. We also offer portrait photography of people, makeup looks, brides, commercial and personal photo shoots. How did you come up with the idea? Ahmed Al Muslemani: The media field is vast and there is no limit to what you can offer and how creative you can be. We have so many ideas to put into action within this field. We are also encouraging talented photographers to go ahead any share their works with us as we are looking forward to adding more photographers to our team. Do you usually as your clients about their expectations from their photos? Adel Jadaan: This is the basis of portrait photography – we first create a connection with the client and ask them about what they like to draw attention to in their photo. Everybody has a favorite side of their faces and some people simply like a straight shot of their face.

62

THETALK / May / 2015

Do you usually share your opinion in case you have a different one? Adel Jadaan: Yes. We always advise the client and share our professional input with them. It is very important to tell them what looks good and what doesn’t, of course, after getting familiar with their style in photos. What are the challenges of making a good photo? Adel Jadaan: Lighting and the purity of skin. Our theory is to give the photo a natural effect, which means relying less on editing the picture through Photoshop. How many photographers are there at Fusion? Ahmed Al Muslemani: We have 3

photographers, each has his own skills. We have just got started with a new challenge, which is hotel photography. We are currently working on a new project which is shooting the interiors of a hotel in Kuwait called Adam’s. Our goal is to assist hotels in delivering the right message to their clients through a photo. We also shoot honeymoon suites, lobbies and all other interiors as per the client’s request. What are the services that you provide when it comes to special occasions like weddings? Ahmed Al Muslemani: We identify weddings as ‘special events’, and therefore, we offer our clients the in-studio photography as well as a full coverage of the wedding ceremony, both video and photography.

“It takes a professional photographer to find the right moment and take the right shot at the right time”

What are the latest trends in prewedding photo shoots? Adel Jadaan: Recently, Kuwaiti grooms have been taking studio pictures and posting them on their social media accounts or newspapers as an invitation to their weddings. We still haven’t got into that field yet but we do have many ideas to give to our clients. It is important to have a vision and convey it to our clients and we believe we have what it takes.

and innocent and look beautiful in pictures. Ahmed Al Muslemani: I recently began learning the techniques of photography and started getting involved in process. We are specialized in food photography too.

What is your definition of the ‘right’ snapshot? Is it about spontaneity or technique? Adel Jadaan: My specialty was always to take pictures that are natural and genuine. I always make sure the moment is extremely spontaneous – I believe this is what creates a memorable photo.

How can a picture deliver a message or a feeling? Adel Jadaan: Spontaneity is what makes a picture profound and attractive. Mostly, the black and white effect in a picture gives it its purest meaning.

What do you mostly like to take pictures of? Adel Jadaan: Kids; they are very spontaneous

Adel Jadaan: Honestly, I always feel that Ahmed’s presence is important whenever I shoot food. He has a very fine taste in decorating and selecting the best angle possible.

In your opinion, what is powerful about the black and white effect? Adel Jadaan: I think colors can distract your attention. The black and white effect draws your

attention to significant details in a photo like the eyes, wrinkles and expressions. It also gives room for curiosity and imagination. What is the most important shot taken in a wedding? Ahmed Al Muslemani: Spontaneity and effortless expressions as Adel said. Why not take genuine shots of people interacting with each other during the wedding? I think it takes a professional photographer to find that moment and take the right shot at the right time. I think this is what wedding pictures lack nowadays. What do you think of ‘selfies’? Adel Jadaan: Some would categorize it as a psychological disorder; however, I think it is very normal. I personally take tens of selfies every day. Fusion for Media and Advertising can be found on Instagram @fusionkwt and on Snapchat @ fusionkw. They are located in Kuwait City, Qabla, block 9 residence 13, 3rd floor, office 306. For your wedding Should you wear a suit or a tuxedo? With fancy suits hitting the bridal scene full force, tuxedos are not the only option for grooms to choose these days. Whether you have got your mind set to go with a tuxedo or a suit already, or you are still on the fence over which option to choose, three main questions likely have popped into your mind at one point or another while considering. Read on for details! What is the difference between a tuxedo and a suit? First of all, it’s important that you know what the key differences are between a tuxedo and a suit. The biggest difference is that a tuxedo has the presence of satin on it, while a suit does not.You will see satin on the lapels, buttons, and pocket lining of the tuxedo jacket, as well as a strip of satin down each pant leg. In contrast, suits have plastic or cloth-covered buttons and no satin parts. Tuxedos may also have additional components like a cummerbund or vest, while a suit may or may not be accompanied by a vest or suspenders. Is it inappropriate for the groom to wear a suit to the wedding? Definitely not, according to today’s fashion trends! But there is a great deal of difference with regard to the symbolism between a tuxedo and a suit. Whereas a suit is traditionally worn to the office, at job interviews, and at casual weddings as a guest, a tuxedo stands alone as something only worn on very important occasions. Think of it this way: the bride will likely be wearing the most expensive, most amazing dress she’s ever worn on the wedding day. It’s up to the bride and groom to decide whether the groom should dress “up” to match her efforts with a tuxedo or “down” to make the wedding more casual with a suit. Your decision between a tuxedo and a suit 64

THETALK / May / 2015

should encompass other details about your wedding as well, including the time of day you are getting married and your venue. While wearing a suit to the wedding can make the groom harder to single out in the crowds unless the girl in the big while dress is by his side, There are times when wearing a suit is simply more appropriate. Chat with your local formalwear professional for his or her opinion on the matter. What is the price difference between a tuxedo and a suit? Not surprisingly, this varies depending on whom you are asking, although you are very likely to find competitive rates between local providers.

At retail, of course, a tuxedo is more expensive than a suit. When considering rental costs, however, which is definitely a more popular option at this time, you will likely find that tuxedo rentals start at a lower price point than suits. What’s the best way to find out? Give your local provider a call and check. “In the end, though,” think about the bride’s dress and even her flowers, and make sure you don’t clash!” Everything should fit together like a puzzle piece when it comes to wedding attire, so don’t focus too hard on the little details without taking a step back to see the big picture!

However, the challenge of how to style the groom vintage, whilst retaining his unique personal style, can feel just as utterly overwhelming. We all want our groom and groomsmen to be walking in with sartorial elegance on the wedding day.

Bow Ties The bow tie is the epitome of vintage chic for any gent! Fashionable since the 18th century choose from floral, velvet, tweed or even sequined for a smart look with a hint of fun.

Old World Fabrics This is a statement look not for everyone, but tweeds, hounds tooth and plaid are fun and stylish fabrics for a bold groom looking to channel his inner country gentleman! Even in a suit these textured textiles have the knack of looking more rustic and casual than formal; but at the same time, as the fabric of choice for the aristocracy – they suggest luxury and elegance. 66

Waist Coats Waist coats are the perfect vintage accessory – whatever the era, season or venue! Layered under a jacket, in matching or contrasting material, they look dapper and add some extra warmth for an autumn or winter wedding. Or they smarten up a simple shirt, whilst looking more casual than a jacket – and infinitely cooler for a spring or summer wedding.

Cravats Before the tie or bow tie came the cravat! Considered casual wear at the start of the 20th century, today it is the perfect alternative for a vintage groom looking for something just as dapper but a little different.

Pocket Watches The perfect vintage accessory, the pocket watch works whatever your groom’s or wedding’s style. Such a simple addition it instantly gives some old world elegance to even the most modern of suits and make a great gift too.

Velvet A velvet suit might not be for everyone, but there is something about this plush fabric that evokes age, romance and opulence. It turns a traditional suit into something fancy that you simply won’t be able to keep your hands off! Perhaps a little warm for summer, but it would be perfect for an autumn or winter wedding.

Brogues We all know that shoes make an outfit and it is no different for the groom. If there is one style of shoe that has old world style and sophistication written all over them it is the brogue. Originally worn as a country walking shoe in the early twentieth century, and considered inappropriate for occasions, today they are inextricably linked with the spectator shoes so fashionable in the 1920s and 1930s.

IT’S His & Her TIME... Baselworld Brand Report OMEGA introduces the stunning De Ville Prestige Dewdrop An elegant timepiece gets a new look inspired by their Fine Jewellery collection The De Ville Prestige collection has long been distinguished by its sophisticated style. Featuring understated dials, state-of-the-industry movements and timelessly fashionable designs, this watch family is aptly named. And with the introduction of the newest ladies’ models, which combine elegant fine jewellery with precise timekeeping, the collection appeals to a new generation of fashion-forward style icons. The De Ville Prestige stands out with its jewellery bracelet, inspired by the OMEGA Fine Jewellery Dewdrop collection. Dewdrop-shaped beads crafted from 18K red or yellow gold come together to form a glamorous, fluid bracelet. The five-link bracelet has a butterfly clasp. This gorgeous timepiece is available in two sizes – 32.7 mm and 27.4 mm – and is fashioned from 68

THETALK / May / 2015

either 18K red or yellow gold. There are also two variations of the dial: one style is created from pearled white mother-of-pearl and decorated with diamond indexes. The luxurious edition features an enchanting golden butterfly design that is complemented by white mother-of-pearl and diamond indexes as well. Both versions are adorned with a fully diamond-set bezel. The 32.7 mm models have a date window at 6 o’clock on the dial. The vertically brushed caseback of the De Ville Prestige Dewdrop is embossed with an image of Chronos, the god of time, and engraved with the iconic De Ville logo. At the heart of the larger of the two sizes is the Co-Axial calibre 2500, the movement that signalled a revolution in mechanical watchmaking. This De Ville Prestige Dewdrop is offered with a three-year warranty. The smaller version is powered by the OMEGA quartz calibre 4061 and has a two-year warranty. Both sizes are water resistant to 3 bar (30 metres / 100 feet).

The OMEGA Speedmaster White Side of the Moon: Capturing

the brilliance of a full moon First, there was the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon, and then OMEGA revealed its counterpart inspired by lunar dust, the Speedmaster Grey Side of the Moon. To round off the collection, OMEGA is proud to introduce yet another innovative timepiece inspired not by astronauts’ views of the Moon in space, but rather the radiance of the celestial body as seen from Earth: the OMEGA Speedmaster White Side of the Moon. Underscoring the brand’s commitment to innovative creations and unique and advanced production processes, this eye-catching chronograph is the third in OMEGA’s selection of solid ceramic timepieces. The white zirconium oxide ceramic dial is complemented by a brushed and polished 44.25 mm ceramic casebody made of the same brilliant material. The polished white

ceramic bezel has a matt chromium nitride tachymeter scale. The polished ceramic pushers on the case function totally independently so there is no risk to the chronograph mechanisms as a result of inadvertent manipulation.

The box-form scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, treated with an anti-reflective coating on both sides, protects the dial with its 18K white gold “Moonwatch”-style hands and applied indexes. The central chronograph seconds hand, however, is rhodium-plated and stands out with a red tip – an unexpected dash of colour on the face of the timepiece. White Super-LumiNova coats the central hour, minute and chronograph seconds hands as well as the indexes and the two dots at 12 o’clock. Engraved just above the centre of the dial are “ZrO2” and, also in red, “Speedmaster”.

There is a small white sub-dial at 3 o’clock that serves as a 60-minute and 12-hour recorder and a small second sub-dial can be found at 9 o’clock. The Speedmaster White Side of the Moon is presented on a white leather strap with a white foldover clasp with grade 5 titanium frame-spring folders – the special ceramic clasp distinguishes this model from its siblings. The polished white ceramic caseback, with its bevelled scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, features matt chromium nitride marks and is engraved with the name of the watch: “White Side of the Moon”. The OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 9300, the first in-house Co-Axial movement to feature a chronograph function, is at the heart of this statement-making timepiece. WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

Ulysse Nardin FreakLab The Freak is back and more of a champion than ever. Uncluttered, with the balance wheel recentered and equipped with a date function for the first time, this masterpiece now incorporates the UlyChoc safety system, a new generation of shock absorbers. Born out of determination to continuously push the boundaries of watchmaking, the Freak collection has brought together the boldest innovations of the past fourteen years, originating both from Ulysse Nardin and the watchmaking industry as a whole. Thus the Freak was the first watch to incorporate a silicium escapement in 2001, a diamond escapement in 2005 and the Dual Ulysse escapement the same year. As 70

THETALK / May / 2015

stunning as ever with the bold nautical character of its Tourbillon using an anchor and sail as hands, the new FreakLab is easily legible and features the date at 4 o’clock. On the technological side, it is for the first time equipped with the UlyChoc safety system, a new generation of shock protection devices. The Freak’s avant-garde design remains unrivalled to this day. With neither dial nor hands, it is constructed so that the movement turns about its own axis. Connected together at the center of this unusual ship, the lower deck thus displays the hours, while the upper deck – which carries the gear train, the balance-wheel and balance-spring unit and the exclusive Dual Ulysse silicium escapement – shows the minutes.

Flaunting more of a corsair facade than ever, with an anchor to show the hours and a bridge representing a sail for the minutes, the FreakLab is phenomenally easy to manipulate. A safety clip between the horns at 6 o’clock frees the rotating bezel sculpted in the shape of waves. This is used to set the hours and minutes when rotated clockwise, and the date when rotated anticlockwise. And the mainspring barrel – designed for a power reserve of more than seven days – is wound by the other bezel. Thus the two bezels, front and back, are constituent parts of the movement.

Hublot unveils the Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the iconic Big Bang, Hublot revealed, one week before Baselworld, the Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold. It is the perfect fusion of respect for tradition and 21st century creativity. The fusion of a revolutionary material – the famous Magic Gold, which is the world’s only scratch-resistant gold, certified as 18K and developed by Hublot – and the iconic design of the BIG BANG, with its Manufacture Chrono: the UNICO. Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO of Hublot, declared “The fusion of materials is in Hublot’s DNA. Four years ago, Hublot created Magic Gold, the only scratch-resistant gold in the world. Still today, Hublot is the only brand to offer this material, whose hardness is close to 1,000 Vickers, more than twice that of ‘standard’ 18 carat gold, which only reaches 400 Vickers.” The Magic Gold is a noble material protected

by patents, certified as 18 carats by the Central Office for Precious Metals Control, and developed by Hublot in Switzerland alongside the prestigious EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), several months of fine-tuning took place in the manufacture to machine the famous alloy. Since November 2011, when Magic Gold was unveiled to the world’s press, Hublot has equipped itself with the means to produce this material inhouse from start to finish thanks to its high-tech foundry at the Nyon Manufacture, which is home to the ceramic sintering and highpressure metal casting processes. As you are probably already aware, this revolutionary material is a fusion of 24 carat gold (nature’s ultimate noble material) and the latest high-tech materials expertise. Components made from this material are produced using a complex process: A boron carbide powder is preformed

in moulds very similar in shape to that of the finished parts, in this case the watch’s bezel. The pre-formed powder is then hardened at a very high temperature, creating a rigid, porous structure. After this operation, 24K gold alloyed with 3% molten liquid gold is injected under very high pressure with inert gas at a high temperature, allowing the metal to fill the ceramic pores and creating a “fusion” of the two to produce Magic Gold. Almost three years of collaboration and research have gone into achieving this impressive result: a completely new type of gold, an almost inalterable precious metal which retains its own characteristics. The first watches made from Magic Gold were presented at BaselWorld2012 in a very limited Big Bang Ferrari edition which reflected the shared DNA of the two brands: Exclusivity, innovation and technology.

The new Porsche roadster for purists Porsche is beginning the 2015 convertible season by celebrating the world premiere of the new Boxster Spyder at this year’s New York International Auto Show. The new top model in the open two-seater series retains the independent character of the previous Spyder, which has already attained cult status. The classic fabric roof is opened and closed by hand, and the sports car is only available with a manual transmission. 76

THETALK / May / 2015

As a true original roadster, the Boxster Spyder offers a traditional sports car driving experience but with contemporary performance. This means a firm sports suspension with a 20-mm lower ride height, brakes taken from the 911 Carrera, more direct steering, and a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine with an output of 375 hp. Drivers and passengers can look forward to outstanding driving dynamics in the lightest yet most powerful Boxster

available. It only takes around 4.5 seconds for the Boxster Spyder to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h; the model’s top speed is 290 km/h. NEDC overall fuel consumption amounts to 9.9 l/100 km. The distinctive design of the Boxster Spyder includes stylistic elements typical for the legendary sports and race cars from Porsche. As a tribute to the 718 Spyder from the 1960s, the new Boxster

Spyder has two prominent streamlined bulges that extend down along the long rear lid behind the headrests. The partially manually operated, lightweight top is suitable for everyday use and brings to mind roadsters from the past, while the fins that stretch back to the rear lend the vehicle’s silhouette its characteristic design. The front and rear end of the model were taken from the Cayman GT4.

More so than in any other Boxster, the interior of the new top model creates an atmosphere that elicits a feeling of pure driving pleasure. The driver and passenger sit in light sports bucket seats with large side supports, while the new steering wheel with a diameter of 360 mm helps to ensure that the mid-engine roadster can be driven precisely and with great agility.

The Boxster Spyder celebrates its world premiere at the New York International Auto Show. It can be ordered now, with the first vehicles arriving in Kuwait from August onwards.

Maui Maui is a great place to go if you’re looking to learn more about Hawaii history and culture. In fact, legend has it that it was the demigod, Maui, who pulled the islands from the sea and lassoed the sun from the top of Haleakala. Honeymooners who are interested in learning more about island lore will have plenty of opportunities to do so: A visit to the scenic Iao Valley will offer a glimpse of the tumultuous era of tribal warfare, while a stroll through the small town of Lahaina will yield a glimpse of Hawaii›s whaling, plantation and trade history. Today, Maui is one of America’s most popular vacation destinations, probably because it›s so considerably different from any place on the mainland. Honeymooners will find all the makings of contemporary luxury at the island’s resorts, but outside the hotel areas, the relaxed “Aloha spirit” permeates. If you are looking to blend in with the locals, you simply need to loosen up: Pack T-shirts, shorts and flip-flops (as well as some light layers) for everyday wear and tone down the road rage.

Although visitors to the island see hula performances as entertainment, they are also a type of prayer and should be respected. Maui is not nearly as large as the Big Island, nor is it as small as Lanai, as bustling as Oahu or as quiet as Kauai. For many Hawaii vacationers, Maui is just right, offering a taste of just about everything the Aloha State has to offer, from impressive wildlife to intriguing history and culture. While on a visit here, you can shimmy alongside professional hula dancers, golf along coastal fairways, snorkel alongside five different types of sea turtles or simply lounge along some of Hawaii’s most notable beaches. One of the archipelago’s most popular tourism spots, Maui can be found sandwiched between the Big Island and the much tinier Molokai. Maui is divided into five distinct regions: Many honeymoon base themselves along the coasts of South Maui (home to the famous Wailea Beach) or West Maui, where the sands of Kaanipali Beach and the music from the Old Lahaina Luauare located. But the rest

of the island should not be missed.Travel along the Road to Hana to experience East Maui’s scenic coastline, explore Haleakala, the world’s largest dormant volcano, in the upcountry, and explore the former tribal battlegrounds of Central Maui’s Iao Valley State Park. Keep in Mind • Nothing is free. Resorts may advertise free Internet and gym access, but you pay for those with the resort fee. Unfortunately, the fees are not negotiable, but at least you now know to expect it. •

Pick your hotel wiselyMaui is full of things to do, but the island itself is fairly large. Make sure you choose a hotel that puts you close to your must-sees.

Mind the time, Maui doesn’t participate in daylight savings. When the rest of the U.S. moves their clocks back or forward, Maui’s time stays the same. WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

Crete If there was one word to describe the Greek island of Crete, it would be “diverse.” Sandy beaches hide amongst soaring mountains, palm-tree forests grow in the middle of sprawling plains, bustling modern cities share coastline with ancient ruins. Speaking of cities in Crete, they reflect the people that came before; the streets are lined with architecture mirroring the styles of the Minoans, the Venetians, the Ottomans as well as contemporary Greeks. Despite the visible contrasts, this island maintains a sense of unity felt whenever you step onto the street, dine at a local taverna or enjoy a glass of raki at a sidewalk café. Crete’s experiences are as assorted as its history, so take some time to decide what type of vacation you are looking to have before you set anything in stone. For a more urban setting and a variety of restaurants. Consider staying along the northern coast in Chania or Heraklion. Those who prefer the great outdoors should head to the southern areas of Chania and Rethymnon for the hiking opportunities and many beautiful beaches. Greeks are known for their hospitality and Crete is regarded as a friendly tourist destination. However, understanding Greek etiquette 80

THETALK / May / 2015

will help you interact with residents and blend in with society. Understanding body language will also help you interact with residents. Be aware of your gestures; for example, the hand signal for “OK” using the thumb and index finger, is offensive in Greece, and Greeks indicate “yes” – a slight downward nod – or “no” – a slight upward nod – differently than Americans. Because of Crete’s warm climate, shorts and T-shirts are acceptable when walking around the cities or the beaches. However, if you are planning to visit any religious sites, make sure to dress more conservatively in long pants or skirts and shirts that cover the shoulders and the chest area. You should dress more formally when dining at a restaurant. Cretan restaurants are used to serving foreigners and generally accept most major credit cards However, Cretans themselves generally pay in cash (the official currency of Greece is the Euro). When

it comes to tipping, 10 percent is the standard amount, but it’s acceptable to leave a little extra for outstanding service.

Keep in Mind • Plan ahead: Crete is larger than its fellow Greek Islands, so you could waste a lot of time traveling from site to site. Create an itinerary before you head out to make sure you budget enough time to do and see everything on your list. •

Bring a phrasebook: Although you can find English speakers in the more touristy parts, Greek is the official language.

Bring an extra change of clothes: It’s important to dress appropriately at the religious sites: Long pants and skirts and shirts that cover your shoulders and chest. If you’re bouncing between the beach and the sites, packing an extra pair of clothing will do you well.

Tahiti Miles of shoreline, dozens of resorts, French cuisine to die for – Tahiti has all the making of a honeymoon destination. However beach bums often pass over Tahiti’s dark sands in favor o Bora Bora’s ivory shores. Despite its idyllic reputation and accessibility,Tahiti is more of an off-the-beaten-path stop than a romantic getaway. However, that doesn’t mean Tahiti deserves to be ignored. Leafy forests sit beside sandy shores; French crêpes are served alongside Tahitian poisson cru (raw fish). If there ever was a place that embodies the beautiful duality of the French Polynesian archipelago, it’s Tahiti. Here, the quirky, often chaotic atmosphere of the island’s capital, Pape’ete, rubs elbows with uncorrupted natural beauty. In fact,Tahiti; the largest of French Polynesia’s 118 islands – is often referred to as two separate islands despite them being joined by a tiny land bridge. Tahiti Nui is the larger, northern section where Pape’ete can be found.Tahiti Iti (the smaller half) is less accessible, although many visitors make the trek here for a taste of seclusion. Just note that spending a week on either part of Tahiti will cost you beaucoup bucks. But honeymooners agree that the warm waters, the

lush jungles, and the luxurious resorts are worth the splurge. French is the official language of French Polynesia, though you will find that many locals (especially those who work in tourism) speak English. However, it never hurts to brush up on a few common phrases, like bonjour (hello) and merci (thank you), or bring along a French-to-English dictionary. Also, bear in mind that for most Tahitians, English is a second language; be patient and courteous when conversing with locals. You may also hear dribs and drabs of Tahitian, the local island dialect, but most residents will promptly switch to French or English when communicating with you.

there are only a couple of dangers to watch out for: pickpockets in Pand moray eels in the coral reefs on scuba dives. Most honeymooners soon discover that Tahiti is warm and welcoming to foreigners. In fact, locals have a philosophy called aita pea pea (not to worry), which translates into a very laid-back and affable culture. Don’t be surprised if you hear absolute strangers greet you on the street.

The currency is the French Polynesia Franc (XPF). Although you may be fooled at first by the exchange rate (1 XPF is equivalent to about one cent in USD),Tahiti will not be kind to your bank account, especially if you›re hanging your hat at one of the island›s fashionable resorts.

The food trucks:The food truck craze has hit Tahiti. Catch the roulettes or food trucks with everything from Chinese fare to French crêpes lined up along Pape’ete’s waterfront on Friday nights.

The sharp sand: Sandals or water shoes are a must at the beaches, since they are speckled with jagged shells, and waves hide barbed coral.

While your budget may be in danger, you will not be: Tahiti is a safe place for tourists. Generally speaking,

Keep in Mind • The languages:The inhabitants of this tropical island speak French and Tahitian, but English is also widely spoken.

For those who are 17, this book will hopefully make them feel that they are not alone in their struggles and that, with resilience, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. It is a short read, that has a far reaching impact lasting longer than its pages. The Illogical Logic of My life is now available in Kuwait in all That Al-Salasel bookstores including the airports.

The 6 Best Wedding Movies of All Time

Remember the old days when you would enjoy a nice wedding movie and imagine what your big day is going to be like? Well, it’s time to get together with your gang a night or two before the wedding and reminisce about the greatest wedding movies of all nights. Pop your corns and have a ‘movie night’ prior to the big day! Below are the top 6 movies of all time...

The Wedding Planner (2008) Who can forget Jennifer Lopez as Mary Fiore, the ambitious and successful San Francisco wedding planner who is forced to choose between her career and love when she falls head over heels ‘literally’ for a top client›s groom-to-be (Matthew McCaughney)?

The Father of The Bride (1991) Planning for your wedding with a father like that could not get more hilarious! George Banks (Steve Martin) is the father of the bride, and with his oldest daughter’s wedding approaching, he finds himself reluctant to let go. What’s worse? Acting upon it! Brides, Make sure you watch it with your fathers.

Meet The Parents (2000) Meet the Parents is a 2000 comedy film starring Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller about male nurse Greg Focker who meets his girlfriend›s parents before proposing, but her suspicious father is every date›s worst nightmare. You haven›t met the parents yet, have you?

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) This wedding romp, based on Nia Vardalos’ one-woman play about a young Greek woman›s efforts to make her family accept her non-Greek boyfriend, was one of the biggest surprise hits in movie history. Not only did Vardalos score an Oscar nomination for her witty screenplay, but the film still stands as the highest grossing wedding flick of all time.

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) Roberts, my very favorite, earned a Golden Globe nomination as Julianne Potter, a woman who realizes she’s in love with her longtime friend (Mulroney), just as he’s about to marry another woman (Cameron Diaz). Oh, and she’s the maid of honor. Poor Jules!

Wedding Crashers (2005) When it comes to mastering the art of crashing a wedding, look no further than Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. Before there was Ted, 22 Jump Street and The Hangover, this 2005 comedy held the record for the highest opening for an R-rated film. A huge box-office and critical success, the film also served up hilarious breakthrough performances from Isla Fisher and Bradley Cooper. WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

GEMINI (May 22-June 21) You may feel quite restricted in what you do and perhaps this is why you may want to run and hide from the world. It’s a very strong time for smoothing out complications that likely arose in your relationships last month. Keeping low key and looking into what could make your life better now will lead to positive outcomes for you in the future.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 23) If you are feeling wary and disheartened these days, do not waste time brooding about the past. Redirect what you have left of your energies and focus on the unique experiences of your life and things that make you special. You’ll feel a sense of rapture, an intellectual and moral growth take over. Let it absorb into you and you will feel a renewed sense of desire for life again.

SAGITTARIUS

(Nov. 23-Dec. 21)

Love might be complicated this month, although invigorating and certainly never boring! Now is the time to keep alert to vulnerable areas in your close interactions. Changes are on the horizon for you professionally and personally in dealing with health and diet issues. The demands of your larger goals in life may have been eclipsing your pleasure-seeking activities, and this becomes glaringly apparent now.

THETALK / May / 2015

You’re attracting admirers, some of whom may take a romantic interest in you and in fact, you are most visible during this period of the year. Strengthen the weak spots and mend the cracks, perhaps even change a few variables to make the overall ‘you’ a better and stronger one. Don’t just live your life, do whatever that makes it genuine and whole

PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Relationships fill your life. Be co-operative, diplomatic, seek to merge. See opportunities. Be sure to sidestep opposition. The month ahead will reward Pisceans who relate and give nothing to those who seek independence, withdrawal or dominance. The biggest problem with you is that you dream a lot. Make sure that your dreams take new wings. Go on; soar off to new heights, Pisces.

LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Now is the time to reevaluate what makes you — YOU. How can you create a happy aura that will fulfill your desires for what you crave in life? Keep that warm and friendly quality about you and keep that teamwork ability you possess in your professional lifestyle.Your magnetism revolves around an element of mystery and fascination rather than outgoing charm.

LIBRA

(Sept. 24-Oct. 23) Your desire for exploring the secrets of love increases as you feel more alive than usual. Reevaluate yourself and what your intentions are.You will surprise yourself and perhaps others around you in how much you can actually change for the better. Unveil your strengths and romantic talent. It will prove positive for you in the end.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) You’ve been protecting yourself long enough. Now is the time to take charge and try new things. Use your inspiration and get spontaneous. Take a chance on something you would normally pass up. Feel the desire and go with it instead of holding back. Your efforts will not go unnoticed and will prove positive and prolific for you.

ARIES (Mar. 21-April 20) Now is the time to stand up tall, hold your head up high and really believe in what you have and what you want. With so much going on in your life right now it is the least you can do for yourself. If you’re with someone, your partner might very well accuse you of subscribing to the ‘what’s mine is mine’ and what’s ours is minephilosophy.

CANCER

(June 22-July 22) Now is the time to reevaluate what makes you — YOU. How can you create a happy aura that will fulfill your desires for what you crave in life? Keep that warm and friendly quality about you and keep that teamwork ability you possess in your professional lifestyle.Your magnetism revolves around an element of mystery and fascination rather than outgoing charm.

SCORPIO

(Oct. 24-Nov. 22) Your financial and love life shall come to the fore this month. Things are favored, especially where a relationship enters the picture. Periods of frustration in these zones ends this month. Others treat you with affection, even in business. Seek new horizons in your personal and professional life. Make sure that there are no major hurts or grouses you have against others for now.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 19) Your intimate moments and personal encounters are not coming to you so easily right now. You seem to have a problem in letting things run smoothly. Stop and refocus your attention and your thoughts as to what is important to you and how to better attain what your goals are. The love you lose may be the love you could have had forever.
