letter/ Well, it seems like only yesterday we were talking about the new year 2018 and resolutions… and now it’s that time of the year again where we say goodbye to the year that has taught us to keep our head up no matter what and welcome the new year with an open mind and an open heart. The year hasn’t ended yet, we still have a few a things to say when it comes to fashion. December is a month filled with joy and celebrations… that you’ll need a gown for! Take a look at our fashion trends for winter inspiration. As for jewelry, ruby red is the way to go! As the new year creeps by, our resolutions are posted everywhere from social media to post-its on our bedside tables. Treat yourself to a facial cleansing tool, some new clean makeup brushes, and 8 hours of sleep! In our beauty section we give you the solution to perfect skin. Our cover girl this month has taught us a lot of things and inspired a few resolutions of our own. “Happiness is an inside job”, Diplomat Farah Al Gharabally tells us. She shares her experiences, in detail, representing her beloved country in New York and imparts a piece of advice or two as well. While not forgetting to put on your best smile ushering in the New Year, while experiencing the joys of committing yourselves to new resolutions, and while planning for a fun-filled holiday season, remember to embrace the ‘joy of giving’ and to practice gratitude for the people and things we already have. We are committed to bringing you thoughtful, creative and inspiring content year after year, and with the best of intentions, we wish you all a glorious beginning to 2019! Till next time, the talk Team

Swept away! ‘Tis the season for glitz and glam. With the holidays coming up our party schedule is busier than ever. Who else is keeping busy? Stylists everywhere! Everyone is currently prepping for those winter weddings and holiday parties… but where should we start? Gowns of course! Unless you’ve got Cinderella’s fairy godmother helping out, we couldn’t help but wonder who needs ours? Gowns are tricky to buy as it is not a “one size fits all” purchase. Different gowns are made for and suit different body types, and not all colors suit all complexions. Number 1 advice, hire a stylist. Can’t do that? Most stores have personal shoppers that will guide you through the process and will help you pick out the perfect one. Too busy, go on the internet and pick what you please! But wait, how do you know what suits you? Find a celebrity that has a similar body type and similar complexion and see what suits her. Do your research and work with that. You can always return or replace the item. Be prepared to be swept away…

Scarves Winter has crept upon us and we’re frantically looking for our scarves to keep us warm (and add a stylish touch to our outfits). Cashmere scarves, pashminas, shahtoosh… all words and names we keep hearing but when it comes to buying the perfect scarf we somewhat are drawn to colors and brands. Don’t get us wrong, who doesn’t love a bright Hermes print scarf to brighten our outfit, or a leopard print Louis Vuitton. These pieces are beautiful and we’re seeing them everywhere. Depending on your budget and personal style, there’s a pick for every one! Pashminas and shahtoosh scarves are pieces that are worth every penny. They’re light, keep you warm and fit easily in your bag. There are many styles, plain or with embroidery, towel-like textures or not, it all depends on how you’ll wear it. If your winter wardrobe is filled with dark colors, go for maroon, purple, or mustard colors. If you’re more of a colorful person when it comes to choosing your clothes, we suggest you opt for neutrals when it comes to scarves.

CH Carolina Herrera Wild Tartan

Prints are an essential part of any House of Herrera collection, and what better way to obtain surprising results than by bringing apparent opposites together. Animal print and classic Tartan check: two prominent prints in contemporary fashion which CH Carolina Herrera reinterprets and juxtaposes in order to create striking looks while still respecting the brand’s lines and codes. Different printing techniques have been applied on materials such as silk, leather, mohair, wool or nylon, achieving amazingly intense results in both patterns. Iconic items such as shirt dresses or double-faced coats are paired with solid colors like black, camel or red, creating a fluid visual image where the boundaries between the two designs have been blurred. Inro bag is the highlight of the collection, designed for those who want to take risks and make an impact while staying casual and comfortable. This duality is based upon the same principle behind combining seeming opposites.

Bejeweled We’re not referring to the game or the app here. The word bejewel is to cover or adorn with jewels. For years now, high quality crystals have been used in accessories, clothing, and also shoes. Remember when we were kids and we had the glue gun kit with beautiful glittery crystals to decorate our denim wear? Well, we’re slightly older now with more options than a glue gun. We watch the Dolce&Gabanna runways and lust over those beautiful crowns and accessories. You don’t need to opt for diamonds, emeralds, or even rubies. Some bejeweled pieces are almost as identical as the real stones themselves. Brides, take a look at the headpieces available for you to choose from, be different on your special day. For daily-wear, we suggest you stick to earrings or maybe a bangle to dress up your outfit.

Ruby Red This beautiful gemstone’s name, Ruby, comes from ruber with is Latin for red. During historical times, Rubies symbolized power and protection, don’t you remember Dorothy’s ruby red slippers? We were dying to get our hands on those, but we traded them in for Louboutins as we grew older. Little did we know that rubies can auction up to $4.2 million! Yes, we’re talking about Elizabeth Taylor’s 8.24 carat ruby ring made by Van Cleef & Arpels. Let us dial it down a notch and see how we can incorporate this precious stone into our jewelry collection. As much as we love a practical piece, we’d suggest you keep your ruby earrings for a special occasion. This piece should be amongst your valuables but deserves a night out every once in a while! A ruby ring set in diamonds is a beautiful idea for an engagement ring. Want something a bit more practical? Wear your ruby as a pendant, this is about as simple as we can get with this amount of luxury!

Entirely set with diamonds, these pieces embody Van Cleef & Arpels’ taste for White High Jewelry. This winter, the Snowflake collection is enriched by two clips and two transformable necklaces. VACHERON CONSTANTIN FIFTYSIX® COLLECTION

Geneva’s oldest watch Manufacture, Vacheron Constantin is heralding a new chapter in its history with its FIFTYSIX® collection. It represents an important new step as this original line, inspired by a historical Vacheron Constantin watch dating from 1956, instils a modern momentum capable of opening up the world of Fine Watchmaking to contemporary enthusiasts. The style of the Fiftysix® is a direct tribute to a watch created in 1956: reference 6073. The distinctive design of this iconic model embodies the creativity of the Maison during the 1950s – a period representing the golden age of watchmaking refinement, as well as the heyday of musical creativity. Round, slim and effortlessly elegant, reference 6073 is distinguished by its four lugs each representing a branch of the Maltese cross. With its classic dial, daring case and avant-garde technical characteristics (it was at the time one of the first watches from the Manufacture to be equipped with a self-winding movement and a water-resistant case), this 1956 watch wove ties between respect for tradition and a taste for innovation. Ties deeply cherished by Vacheron Constantin and now expressed in the Fiftysix® collection picking up several features of the original model: lugs respectively forming one portion of the Maltese cross, a box-type crystal, as well as self-winding movements. For the first time in its storied history, the Maison has decided to offer a classic collection both in gold and in steel, while treating the latter material with the same high aesthetic standards as the precious metal. As an example of this, see the use of white gold hands and appliques on the steel versions of the FIFTYSIX®. the talk - page 51

Eberhard & Co

8 Jours Grande Taille Eberhard & Co’s new take on the elegant and classic 8 Jours manually-wound watch that offers whole 8 days of power reserve is the memorable 8 Jours Grande Taille, a reimaging of an icon that will make for the perfect gift over the festivities. Although preserving the same basic dial layout with seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock and the power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock, the watch is slighly larger in heft to accommodate the power reservve and achieve an overall more modern appearance. The watch is powered by the reworked ETA Peseux 7001 hand-wound movement, squeezes in an add-on module that adds a power reserve functionality and provide some living space for the second spring barrel that houses a spring 125 centimeters (almost 50 inches!) in length. The Eberhard 8 Jours Grande Taille, comes packed in an elegant 41 mm case, which is made either of 18-carat rose gold or surgical-grade stainless steel and features a cut-out on its solid case back cover to provide a view of its nicely decorated mainspring barrel with a figure 8-shaped bridge. Sporting rather short lugs and a very compact setting / winding crown the time measuring device will probably feel very comfortable on a normally-sized wrist. The timepiece is available in two dial versions, the first featuring Arabic numerals and the second, which is just a trifle dressier, coming with Roman numerals.

Brushed Makeup brushes are certainly confusing if you’re a beginner or just care about the basics. Who else has walked out of the makeup store with 3 identical brushes in hand, having heard makeup geeks and gurus swear they’re different? Oh well enough of that. We’ve rounded up the 9 brushes you’ll actually need (and know how to use) on a daily basis. First, you obviously need a foundation brush for the application of liquid products. To blend? The Beauty Blender of course! Dampen it with water and use to blend your products on your face and neck. Another is a powder brush which you can use for loose powders and setting powders. A blush brush is a must of course, for applying your blush correctly and avoiding pink smudges. A concealer brush is a debatable one as some use the foundation brush to apply and then blend it with their fingers and/or a Beauty Blender. However, let’s add it to the collection for the sake of hygiene. Now for the eyes we’ll start with a basic eye shadow brush to swipe the base color on. Next up, our personal favorite, the eye shadow blending brush used for the crease. An eye-liner brush is also important whether you use gel or shadow liner. A lash and brow comb… should we say more? Last but not least, the fan brush for applying highlighter; while not forgetting the bronzer, well you could use the fan or the powder brush depending on your personal preference.

Royale Hayat Hospital

Dr. Musheera Ali

Clinical & Cosmetic Dermatologist Dr. Musheera Ali is a Clinical and Cosmetic Dermatologist at the Royale Hayat Hospital. She is a member of the European Society for Cosmetic & Aesthetic Dermatology. Dr. Musheera is experienced in diagnosing, treating, and helping to prevent conditions related to skin, hair, and nails. Her research work has been published and presented in various international dermatology journals and conferences. As winter is approaching, we asked her to give us a few tips on how to keep our skin healthy and glowing during the colder days.

the talk - page 78

As winter is creeping up on us, what changes should we be making to our skincare routine? Cold weather can be harsh on our skin. Low humidity associated with winter and central heating causes our skin to dry out. This may cause flaking and itching of the skin. In addition, you may have chapped lips and cracking of skin of the heels. This may be much worse in persons prone to eczema. Fortunately, we can protect our skin by switching to a simple winter skincare routine. Cleanse your skin using a gentle non-foaming cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid hot water as it strips off the natural Moisturising factors from the skin that are essential to protect the skin. Keep the skin well hydrated and Moisturising by using a moisturiser suitable for your skin type. Do not stay in the shower or bath for a long duration and after having a bath pat dry your skin and immediately moisturise. Sun protection is absolutely essential all year around. People assume that they do not need sunscreen when the temperatures are lower. However, the sun’s damaging rays can affect your skin irrespective of the temperature or weather conditions. A treatment that we’ve been hearing of a lot is the Fractional Microneedling Radiofrequency. Tell us more about it. Fractional Microneedling Radiofrequency is one of my preferred treatments for my patients. It is an innovative technology that combines two techniques which is microneedling and radiofrequency. In this procedure insulated needles enter the skin and deliver radiofrequency energy thereby inducing growth factors and stimulating collagen. It is used to improve scars, for pore tightening and also for rejuvenation by improving the quality and texture of the skin. What is the current focus of aesthetic practice? Earlier the main focus of aesthetic medicine was anti-aging meaning reversing the signs of aging. Now the focus has shifted to aesthetic enhancement irrespective of the age and gender of the adult patient. Rather than a single procedure a multimodal approach is used depending on the individual patient analysis, which means a combination of various treatments. Some of the treatments that fall under this umbrella are Botox, Fillers, PRP, Skin boosters, Mesotherapy, Lasers, Peels, Microneedling and HiFu.

• MSc Clinical Dermatology, UK • MD Dermatology, UK. • Member of the European Society for Cosmetic & Aesthetic Dermatology.

What are 5 skin essentials you would recommend for our handbags or during travel? Sunscreen, moisturiser, cleanser, lip balm (with SPF) and a hydrating hyaluronic acid-based face mist. What is the best skincare advice you can give our readers? Use skin care products formulated for your skin type, moisturise as often as possible, drink adequate amount of water and have an antioxidant rich diet. Stay sun safe all year round. In addition to the face do not forget to apply sunscreen on other exposed areas such as hands, neck and décolleté. If you have issues with your skin, hair or nails do not rely on the internet, consult a dermatologist as soon as possible. the talk - page 79

Farah Al-Gharabally

From Ktown to the Big Apple! As Diplomatic Attache in Kuwait’s Permanent Delegate to the UN, Farah Al-Gharabally gracefully conducted herself in accordance with representing her country’s dignity and pursuing her future goals. Farah, on several occasions, has expressed her country’s stand and commitment over issues ranging from economic, social and humanitarian. We were inclined to know more and were delighted to get into conversation with Farah Al-Gharabally. A graduate from Kuwait University, with a Degree in Mass Communication and Media, Farah took some time off for herself before deciding to work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kuwait. Upon completion of the required course spanning a year, Farah wished to pursue further studies in Political Science, which she did, earning a minor as an undergraduate student while still working. Farah was given an opportunity to travel to New York for three months through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with a group that had been flown there for training purposes; and Farah fell in love with the city while also giving all of her efforts to the work at hand. The Kuwaiti Ambassador recognized her efforts and picked her out of the group to continue to work full time, hence she moved to New York where she stayed on for six years, while also pursuing her master’s degree.

When did you leave for New York and what influenced your decision? During the span of the three-month course in NYC, I fell in love with the city. It’s called a metropolitan city after all, there are limitless opportunities, and I loved every aspect of it. I had it in me to go back to this city and live the full experience and discover what this city has to offer. I moved there in 2011 and just got back a few months ago. Personally, I love exploring new places and people, in general. New York, to me, is the capital of the world! How did it feel being a Kuwaiti woman living abroad? It felt great! I cannot relate any issues either communicating with other people or living in a different city away from home. The opposite entirely, I felt right at place, I fit right in. I experienced acceptance and compassion towards my country, the people around me, and also the city I moved to. Did you feel like society here was on your side? My environment was in fact very encouraging, I come from a supportive and open family who saw this as an amazing opportunity for me. I was surrounded by a group of people who had faith in the fact that everyone can choose their own journey in life. Society, in general, I can say, was also very supportive as, after all, representing my country abroad is always seen as a positive thing.

lifestyle - interview

What did you learn from your experience in the west? The most important thing I learnt was ‘acceptance’. People accepting me for who and how I am, and vise versa. No matter what the religion, faith, or belief, acceptance was the key. New York is a unique city, it made me learn and grow, and it made me feel deeply. Another thing I noticed was that life is not as easy as we thought it was! Life is actually really tough. For example, I feel like we do not possess the life skills required to live abroad, we’re getting a bit too comfortable here. Whereas in New York everyone is constantly working, whether it’s on their career or self-development or even just their bodies, they’re just always working. Work ethics is something I have come to much admire. What lessons do you bring back home with you? There are two main things that come to mind. First of all, we are all one as humans! Our purpose is to live, and we are all equals. It’s up to each individual to decide if they want to work on themselves or not. Another lesson, a crucial one, is that ‘happiness is an inside job’. It has nothing to do with which country you are living in, or what your profession may be or where you are working. If you’re happy on the inside, you’ll live a happy life. What would you advise women who are contemplating working abroad? Oh, absolutely go for it and do it! If you can, just go ahead. The most important piece of advice would be to be yourself and to be courageous. Knowledge should accompany that courage, to avoid recklessness. In a fashion sense, how do you feel the city influenced your personal style? I’m not a person who leans towards fashion and follows trends. But then again, New York is New York - there’s inspiration everywhere you go. The city gives you the opportunity to try new things and experiment with fashion, not everyone goes by the book. You have to stay fashionable to keep up with the city! Also, my friends in New York influenced my fashion sense big-time. They were all into fashion, and some of them worked in the fashion industry as well.

The Effect of Social Media By Dr Juliette Dinkha Social media, a platform widely used more so by a younger audience (those in the age group of 18-25) mainly for self-presentation purposes. Since the mid-1990s, social media has been a popular trend among college and university students. These platforms are used as a social tool to establish and sustain friendships, and communicate with friends and relatives at longer distances, which provides users a way to feel connected to other people. The purpose of these sites varies based on professional or personal use. Social Media has transformed the way people think, talk, communicate or socialize on the web. Despite the many positive outcomes, it is important to use social media moderately since excessive use affects an individual’s lifestyle in terms of socializing, energy levels, eating, sleeping and exercising patterns and even behavior towards others. @dr.jdinkha

the talk - page 102

There are many downsides related to the misuse of social media, most notably cyberbullying, which has tremendously increased among school aged children and college students, even more than regular bullying. In recent years it has led to a rise in teenage sadness, fear, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and attempts. Cyberbullying is seen online in a number of forms such as continued messages of rude and/or angry content, harassment, threats and insults, spreading rumors to harm a person’s reputation, revealing personal information about a person and cyberstalking. Aside from suicidal thoughts and attempts, cyberbullying can lead to numerous other mental health issues such as low self-esteem, depression and anxiety. Kuwait is technologically advanced and a large percentage of population in Kuwait are spending a lot of time using various types of social media applications. It has been noticed that males and females in Kuwait use social media excessively for different purposes. They spend a great amount of time chatting on Facebook, WhatsApp and Snapchat and it is negatively impacting their sleeping patterns, social skills and interpersonal relationships. As a society, in general, you could say, we are becoming socially awkward, we spend less time face-to-face and our concentration and focus has decreased. We spend time sharing and posting content or buying products and services online which takes away time from family and friends. Social media has also negatively impacted the youth as they do not seem to be concerned about their privacy when sharing personal content and

information. It is obvious that users in Kuwait place too much emphasis on virtual interaction and less on the real world. Social media users have to channel their creativity, interest and personal growth in more productive and healthy ways. A conscious effort needs to be made to stray away from the ‘addiction’ of social media by engaging in activities like sports and fitness, social gatherings, reading and spending time in nature and exploring new ventures. the talk - page 103

Rita Merheb Khair – Living for Design

I am a self-confessed fashion addict, an obsession with shoes grew early on. My mother is a scientist and couldn’t care less about fashion, so I definitely didn’t get the bug from her. I would go to Villa Moda by myself every Eid and buy a pair of Prada or Miu footwear.

There are a lot of words that can be used to describe the collection – opulent, over the top, in your face, maximalist; words often associated with Dolce&Gabbana. But in this collection, they’ve stuck to the staples that they’ve built their empire on and fused in a healthy dose of youthful swagger. But, ohhhh, those accessories…

When we speak of artists and their design philosophies, what is it that comes to mind? There is a popular saying that goes, “the job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery (Francis Bacon)”. Rita Merheb Khair brings back the art element to individualistic designing.

This year, designers are competing to win around the theme ‘Connections’, which is defined as ‘bringing things together’, or ‘how things relate to one another’. Its contemporary meaning reflects technology’s increasing ability to provide a means through which users and their products and/or service providers are able to identify preferences and behavior. The top three designs will be displayed in the Audi Innovation Hub at Design Week in Dubai Design District, which is another first for the brand with the Four Rings.

A professional jury from the region rewards the best-submitted projects based on degrees of innovation, ease of use, technique, feasibility, target user, development and relevance to the theme.

The Audi Innovation Award is now in its third year and has consistently grown in status and popularity since its inception in 2016. The first of its kind in the Middle East, the Audi Innovation Award seeks to empower local designers and inspire the region with innovative creations that can improve the way we live. It is an annual competition open to anyone residing in the GCC and most Levant countries.
