Best Hospital Award 2014-2013-2012-2011-2010
October This is the second letter I write for this issue, the past week opened my eyes to little things in life that can have a tremendous effect on us. When you lose a loved one, you realize how important it is to appreciate the people in your life who really matter; it is important to keep telling them how much they mean to you. Sometimes, we feel like we do not have the time to keep in touch with them or that our schedules are very busy to clear up a few minutes for a phone call. We tend to say “Well, I can call tomorrow”, But sometimes “tomorrow” is too late; sometimes “an hour” is too late. Respect the people who find time for you in their busy schedule, and cherish those who never look at their schedule whenever you need them. Those people deserve to feel your appreciation and love on a regular basis. Be there for them as they are there for you. Sometimes, a word can heal a longing heart and put it at ease. Open up as much as you can for you might regret not doing so later. This month, we support our fellow women with breast cancer, it is important to spread breast cancer awareness as it is a serious cause that can affect anyone we know and care for. To those battling it, keep going; and to those supporting them, be there.
Until next time, Hind Nassar
Operations Manager

an H&M Balmain collaboration an interview with the two designers Olivier Rousteing & Ann-Sofie Johansson
O
livier Rousteing is a French fashion designer. Born September 13, 1985 in Bordeaux France, Rousteing was adopted by a couple at age 1. Rousteing’s mother is an optician, while his father is a seaport manager. He grew up in Bordeaux and moved to Paris to study at ESMOD - the Ecole Supérieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode. In 2003, he graduated and began his career as a designer at Roberto Cavalli and became Head of the Women’s Division. On April 26, 2011, at the age of 26, Olivier Rousteing replaced Christophe Decarnin as the Creative Director for Balmain. Rousteing says his age, initial anonymity, and especially race led to grumblings amongst the fashion establishment. “People were like, ‘Oh my God, he’s a minority taking over a French house,” Rousteing told Out magazine in 2015. Since his arrival, women now account for 40 percent of Balmain’s revenue, While the company won’t release figures, estimates are that Balmain’s revenue is up 15 to 20 percent over the past three years. Rousteing opened a Balmain store in London, Balmain’s stand-alone boutique outside of Paris. A New York store is scheduled to open in fall 2015. Other stores are in the planning stage. With the help of selfies with celebrity friends like the Kardashian clan, Rihanna, Beyoncé, and various models, including those from Victoria’s Secret, Rousteing attracted 1.3 million followers on Instagram, making it the first French label to pass the million-follower mark. To start with, how do you feel about the collaboration with H&M overall? I am so excited that Balmain is collaborating with H&M. For me it is a really big achievement and quite an emotional moment. When I was a teenager I was a total H&M kid, and I would always shop there to buy pieces and play with my style so that I could find my own identity. I was always at the front of the line for each of the new

collaborations, so it’s amazing for me that today I am the one collaborating with H&M. How did this collaboration all come about? It all happened very naturally and easily. H&M contacted us, and we had a meeting with them. What I love about H&M is that even though they’re one of the world’s biggest brands, it is run by people who love fashion and creativity. I’d already had experience of an H&M collaboration when I worked at Roberto Cavalli, so I knew that I could trust them to understand the Balmain world, and to take the collaboration to the next level. What do you find challenging about this experience? The biggest challenge was in choosing which pieces to include in the collaboration. There were so many looks that I wanted to include, but I also wanted it to be a tight edit. It was important for me to reflect the diversity of Balmain and the different sides of

what we do. The collection has everything from rich embellishment to powerful tailoring, as well as everyday pieces and those with Parisian flair. It was a challenge to choose them all, but I’m so proud of the result. Balmain is known for its iconic beading and embroidery details, how did you manage to combine this trait with the simplicity of H&M’s? H&M are amazing because they never asked for any compromise. They wanted the true spirit and DNA of the house, and pushed themselves to create these extraordinary pieces for us. But with me, every single detail is important, not just the ones that are obvious. We worked hard on the cut, fit and fabric of every single piece, because the Balmain signature is in all of these details too. What is different about your designs for H&M and how does it add to your outstanding success as a designer? Balmain is a world of confidence and attitude. It is attractive and powerful, and dedicated to

craftsmanship and richness. It is about luxury, but it is also about pop culture, and the energy of the future. I am so excited for this collaboration because it feels like such a personal achievement for me. I am also so thankful to H&M because they are also really opening up my world. Finally with this collaboration I am going to see my designs on the street. I can’t wait for people around the world to get their own piece of the Balmain X H&M collaboration, and to share pictures of how they’re wearing it with the hashtag #HMBalmaination.

nn-Sofie Johansson is the Head Designer at H&M design studio. Born in 1967 in Sweden, Ms. Johansson’s background has always been related to fashion, art and allied studies. She began her career with H&M in 1987, and became an integral part of the design studio starting as a design assistant at the young department, before finally making her way to the women’s wear design team at H&M Head Office, in Sweden. Since 2005 Ann-Sofie Johansson has been the Head of Design at H&M Head Office, Sweden.
She is the Mentor behind all the design activities and creative intelligence behind all the exciting fashion merchandises which fashion followers see every season after season at the exclusive H&M stores and outlets. How does H&M choose designers to collaborate with? Olivier Rousteing is one of the most exciting designers in the world, and has brought such amazing energy and creativity to Balmain. With each of our designer collaborations, we want to give our customers the chance to experience something totally new and different from anything we’ve done before. Last year’s collaboration with Alexander Wang was all about American sportswear, and so it’s great that this year the focus is on the amazing Parisian chic of Balmain. From a personal point of view, what do you like about Olivier Rousteing’s designs? It’s been a privilege to get to know Olivier, and to see how involved he is with every stage
of the design process. He is passionate about craftsmanship, and taking traditional techniques and using them in a new way. He is a truly gifted designer who understands how to connect fashion with the new internet generation. Olivier has been deeply involved in every single piece in the collection, from the initial designs to the final fitting process, making this a very personal collaboration indeed. Over the years, how are such collaborations adding to H&M? I like to think more about what the collaborations have brought to our customers. Through them, they have experienced new worlds in fashion, which previously may have been closed to them. I think the collaborations have played a role in opening the doors of fashion, and changing the perception of who fashion is for. We like to think of the collaborations as a celebration of fashion, and we love that so many people around the world can be part of the fun.
Creativity wise, do you share common ideas with Olivier Rousteing? It was interesting to see in the design and fitting process how much we share with Olivier. Both of our teams work very hard, and are dedicated to giving our customers and followers the best pieces we can.We also share a love for fashion, and a desire to share with people the fun of creativity. No matter how hard we worked, Olivier always made sure we had a good time. It’s an energy and attitude that I think comes through in every piece of the collection. What would you like to tell the audience about the collection? I love that there are pieces that everyone can wear in the collection. Of course there are the bodycon dresses, but there are also pieces with a looser fit, like the embellished velvet blazer that Kendall Jenner wore on the Billboard red carpet. There are pieces in the collection that every woman can wear, like the amazing pea coat, the silk shirts and the incredible tailoring. I can’t wait to see which pieces our customers choose, and how they’ll wear them in their own way.

Owner of Before Chocolate Café Raghda Al-Essa
I
first met Raghda Al-Essa during my visit to her café when I decided to write a review on Before Chocolate Café and was delighted to listen to her speak with all the passion she had towards chocolate and everything she believed her café would be. The story began with huge chocolate love as she continues to draw the success of her business from the same concept: chocolate love. I chatted wih Raghda Al-Essa to know more about her and how Before Chocolate Café was born. Tell us a little brief about yourself. I’m an ambitious Kuwaiti woman who loved chocolate since she was a kid. I have an experience in marketing that extends to more

than 10 years in the private sector. Both, my love and ambition evolved into something big; the opening of Before Chocolate Café – my first project. Where did you grow up and where did you study? I was born and raised in Kuwait, I studied Business Administration in Kuwait University. When did the idea of opening a café come up and how? My huge love for chocolate was behind it. In 2013, I decided to establish the company which owns and runs the café boutique which is specialized in Swiss chocolate.
Where did the inspiration behind the concept of Before Chocolate Café come from? The inspiration is derived from my huge passion for chocolate since childhood – I have always gravitated to chocolate and paid special attention to anything related to it, whether through reading, traveling and keeping up with the latest in the international markets, especially when it comes to restaurants and cafés. This has inspired me to take a step forward and establish a business that is chocolate-oriented. How would you describe the type of chocolate you make at your café? The chocolate that is offered in my café is the most
“My passion for chocolate is endless” luxurious chocolate as it comes from Switzerland. Delicately selected and with special attention to its ultra-high quality, it is designed and manufactured especially for Before Chocolate Café. I have personally chosen the types of chocolate that are offered in the café. Who designed your beautiful interior? The main framework was designed by Lines Co., the interior, however, in addition to the accessories and furniture were designed and chosen by me. My aim was to design an interior that reflects a warm atmosphere of home, and I was enthusiastic about the presence of natural roses in order to reflect positive energy and a sense of comfort to the visitors of the café. Does chocolate have a special place in your heart? My passion for chocolate is endless. What is your favorite item from the menu? My choices always correlate with chocolate. I love all the chocolate items we offer at the café such as chocolate shots and Davos Cake. What do you do to keep yourself, your space and your time organized? I have a character that is very attentive to details and very organized since childhood. This can be observed in the way I manage my business. I always look forward to excellence and precision in my work. What was the biggest challenge? In the presence of a large number of restaurants and cafés, particularly franchises, it was challenging to succeed as a local Kuwaiti Café in light of this great competition in the local market. The biggest challenge was to choose and manufacture luxury Swiss chocolate specifically for the café. Do you have any expansion plans in the coming future? Yes, I look forward to the opening of the second branch during 2016. Beyond that, my aim is to go for an expansion in the neighboring countries.

Easy Gourd
Bracelets
Piling wrists with bracelets that are your own creation could be a fun new challenge especially if you are into crafting. Those simple bangles can be pretty accessories for autumn; you can even gift them to someone special! You will need:
Dried gourd - Dust mask - Pencil - Miterbox saw - Belt sander - Course sand paper - Mod Podge and paintbrush - Woodburner - Shoe polish
If you can’t find a pre-cleaned gourd, you will have to soak your gourd in water for 15-20 minutes and scrub off the dirt and dark mold with soap and a wire pot scrubber. And let it dry completely before beginning your project. Use a pencil and cups that isn’t too much wider than your wrist or other bracelets to trace two lines around the outside of the gourd. 54
THETALK / October / 2015
Cut off the end and remove the dried seeds and membrane. Make sure that you are wearing a mask during all of the cutting and sanding processes, gourd dust can irritate the respiratory system.
Cut following the second line that you have drawn on and you will have a rough bracelet shaped gourd. You can continue to cut a few more bracelets out by tracing more cups or just eyeing it.
Using course sandpaper, remove any leftover membrane from the inside of the bracelet and round the edges of the inside of the bracelet.
Use Modpodge to coat the inside of the bracelet. You will probably need a few coats. Sketch out some designs on your bracelets and use the wood burner to trace over them.
Use shoe polish to cover over the outside of your bracelet. Follow the directions according to the brand you buy.
And you’re done! WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

Compared to surgical liposuction and other ultrasound or laser techniques i-Lipo is much more affordable with similar results. This technology uses low levels of visible red laser light to create a safe and painless bio-stimulation effect in the targeted fat tissue. This stimulation is how the body frees energy resources when required, so i-Lipo does not produce any abnormal effects in the body or damage body tissue such as cells, blood vessels or neighboring nerves or vital organs. The treatment can be performed on all skin types and body areas where unwanted fat is stored and you can return to normal activity immediately after treatment. According to Dr. Edita, in order to see the maximum results, a course of 8 treatment sessions are recommended, 2 per week, per body area. These treatments should be followed by enough exercise to burn off the fatty acids. Once the laser pads are in place each treatment session will last 20 minutes. Typically a 1-4cm loss in abdomen circumference can be achieved with every treatment, though it is variable. As with traditional Liposuction, a healthy diet and exercise pattern should be maintained to

enable your results to continue. Exilis The Exilis is designed for slimming and skin tightening, which is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment. At HCC, the team is aware of the importance of looking good and feeling confident, hence, the treatment is offered to males and females. The Exilis uses a revolutionary patented technology
that delivers ultrasonic waves and controlled heating to the tissue, the machine targets deeper fat layers, while contact cooling of the surface regulates the temperature of the skin and protects fine dermal structures. The Exilis treatment can tighten the skin, reduce wrinkles, give the skin a smoother and younger look and can enhance collagen production. This treatment does not require any anesthetics and
no medicines are needed prior to the treatment to relax as compared to other tightening devices. The patient might feel some heat to the tissue which can be adjusted quickly to each patient’s tolerance. Typically, only in extremely rare occasions the treatment would leave any scars. The side effects of the Exilis treatment are minor, as most patients might experience some redness which will disappear after 1 or 2 hours leaving no bruises.
For the face, make up can eventually be applied that day if needed. As for body treatments, Dr. Edita encourages patients to be physically active. According to Dr. Edita, patients need to be tested for diabetes, pregnancy, those with skin diseases or metal devices in their bodies before getting started with the treatment. However, all skin types including patients with dark skin can have this treatment safely. In order to maximize results, Dr. Edita advises
patients to get 4 treatments every 1 or 2 weeks. Non-surgical cosmetic treatments are generally less painful than surgical procedures and have little or no recovery or downtime. At HCC, this kind of cosmetic treatments is administered by highly experienced doctors and nurses who also provide individual consultations to assess your specific requirements and create a personalized treatment plan to achieve your desired results.

Mimosa & Cardamom by jo malone Marie Salamagne
E
legant and different. This is how Parisian master perfumer Marie Salamagne describes the cologne company Jo Malone London. Like the names of its fragrances: White Jasmine & Mint, Blackberry & Bay, Earl Grey & Cucumber, and its newest launch Mimosa & Cardamom. Can you tell us about the brief from Jo Malone London? The first thing that Jo Malone London showed me was some incredibly vivid orientalist paintings from the nineteenth century. They wanted to create a fragrance that captured the bohemian spirit of adventure from the Victorians, who travelled the world collecting intriguing objects, to the vibrant hedonism of the sixties to the modern day bohemian. With Jo Malone London the process is always very immersive so I looked forward to really delving into the bohemian world. Where did you look for inspiration? Jo Malone London took me on a journey to the home of the orientalist painter, Frederick Leighton. Leighton House is a hidden gem in Holland Park, London. It was built as an incredibly decadent showcase for his collection of more than 1,000 tiles collected in the Middle East and is filled with vibrant pattern. One of his paintings, Flaming June, was particularly inspiring. I liked the idea of travelling through the picture to discover the vivid colour, texture and atmosphere of the interiors and wanted to recreate these ayers in the scent. From there we looked at places like Marrakesh and Tangiers which were bohemian havens in the sixties for people such as the Rolling Stones to literary characters like Sebastian Flyte in Brideshead Revisited. We were intrigued by figures like the London fashion designer Thea Porter, the society beauty Talitha Getty and the iconic Loulou de la Falaise with her bohemian style. Jo Malone London wanted to draw on this inspiration but also bring a sense of modernity to the scent. We looked at what the bohemian spirit means today from new bohemian fashion with its eclectic prints, colourful pattern and drapery to a love of travel off the beaten track.

THETALK / October / 2015
What do you think is special and current about the new bohemian mindset? For me the new bohemian celebrates a state of mind without boundaries. They are free-thinkers who celebrate authenticity and intensity. A true sense of adventure is at the heart of the new bohemian spirit for me. Mimosa & Cardamom is a floriental fragrance. How did you give it a Jo Malone London signature? When Jo Malone London told me they wanted a floriental fragrance to capture this bohemian story I knew straight away that they would be looking for a new approach. They wanted to bring a sense of modernity to the traditional construction and to give it a twist. The classic floriental is made with florals like orange blossom, jasmine or rose. All are infused with an oriental richness and sophistication. They stand out because of their unique blend of warmth and sensuality. Jo Malone London wanted to update this idea with mimosa as the main ingredient which is innovative in itself. I was very inspired by this starting point. In fragrance history, mimosa had not been revisited for a long time so it was an intriguing challenge. I then wanted to create something bold and captivating around it. We chose the cool spice, cardamom, as it would add a new energy. I love its thrilling freshness and sparkling effect. We knew we had found an unusual yet perfect pairing; the vibration of the cardamom, an unexpected twist, with the sensual softness of mimosa. They are both radiant. Mimosa is the warm sun, cardamom the bright light. Tell us about how you were inspired by Mimosa. Mimosa & Cardamom is infused with sensuality and much of this comes from the mimosa itself, an unusual powdery and honeyed floral that perfectly captures the bohemian character. I had a strong memory of the mimosa flower which made it even more exciting to work with.
It has always reminded me of my childhood and winter weekends spent near the coast in the South of France. It was a joy to see these blooms again when Jo Malone London took me to see the mimosa growing in the Tanneron Mountains in Provence. It was a cold February day with bright blue skies. The scent and spectacle of the fluffy yellow flowers was unbelievable, mimosa is the golden sun of winter! I took some branches back from Tanneron with me and put them in my office so every day I could be inspired by the smell of the bright yellow pompoms. I chose to use a sumptuous absolute of Mimosa from the South of France, rich with a multifaceted character to capture the beauty of these flowers.
powdery tonality brought by heliotrope. This sensuous note adds a feminine creaminess with its almond tones.
Can you tell us more about the Mimosa absolute? I worked with a 100% natural mimosa extract, sourced from Provence. The young branches are harvested by hand and the extraction is carried out immediately within two to three hours on fresh flowers in Grasse and Tourrettes. The flowers harvested in the Tanneron are traditionally processed: primary solvent extraction to produce the concrete, then a secondary extraction with alcohol to obtain the absolute. 1Kg of absolute is obtained with 500Kg of Mimosa. Mimosa is a symbol of elegance, simplicity, tenderness and friendship. Behind its apparent fragility, the flower captures a strong feminine energy. Mimosa absolute is the ultimate reference for green and floral, powdery long-lasting notes. A slight woody and honeyed note differentiates it from other origins.
Was there one point on the journey that was the hardest or most challenging? I think modernising the mimosa was both the biggest challenge and biggest opportunity. This ingredient hasn’t been reinterpreted for a long time in perfumery so it was a real chance to do something new and innovative and I wanted to embrace this. I have worked with it before but never as a main ingredient. We used it in a particularly high dosage.
How did this work with the rest of the fragrance? The fragrance has a modern floriental signature. The ingredients are layered to evoke colour and texture, almost like a rich and sumptuous orientalist interior or the layers of contrasting fabric used in bohemian fashion. The warm floral heart around mimosa is filled with another
Then damask rose essence is exquisitely luxurious, and strengthens the honeyed character of mimosa. On top, the freshness of cardamom is enlightened by transparent floral notes of nymphaea and green violet leaves. Much of the sensuality is driven by tonka bean absolute, a classic floriental ingredient that is very refined and elegant and gives the fragrance its oriental character. Warm, balsamic, almondy and vanillic, its richness is irresistibly addictive. Sandalwood and musk enrich this sensuality, and make the fragrance more intense and diffusive.
Who do you imagine wearing this fragrance? Someone open-minded, comfortable in themselves with an effortless sense of style and a love of adventure. Which scent would you choose to layer with Mimosa & Cardamom with Fragrance Combining™? I have three favourite combinations actually. For the daytime I like to layer Mimosa & Cardamom with English Pear & Freesia, it creates a golden full floral with a touch of juicy freshness. Another favourite is Red Roses and Mimosa & Cardamom for a voluptuous and very natural full floral. In the evening I create something richer by layering Mimosa & Cardamom with Tuberose Angelica for a sumptuous and mesmerising bouquet.

hen we pamper ourselves, a hair treatment isn’t always top of mind. We often forget about our poor hair, which we subject to heat styling, hair dye and other chemical-laden products. However, there are a million different ways we can damage our hair, whether it’s from a weekly swim or just being out in the sun unprotected. Sometimes, one regular dose hair treatment is guaranteed to give you healthy hair. Now that the beach season is almost over, it could be the perfect time to show some care to the damaged hair and split endings as a result of all the hair enemies. I decided that it was time for my hair when I found myself considering a hair trim, but I did not want to! I had a plan to let my hair grow really long for the last months; I would only cut 5 cm every now and then. It still felt dry and I knew cutting my hair was not the only option. 60

I visited the salon for a hair, feet and hands treatment. My hair was examined and I was told I needed a “Filler” treatment – a treatment that works on dry and damaged hair, leaving it shiny and fresh. So, we first started with my hair. After washing my hair, the expert applied the treatment and covered my hair with a plastic cap and turned on the steamer to accelerate the process. During this time, I chose the “Elemuse” treatment for my hands and feet – a treatment that includes a scrub, mask and lotion with a scent I got to choose – I decided to go for the pomegranate as it smelled so appealing and fruity. The nails technician soaked my feet in warm water and sprinkled a powder that turned the water into jelly. The feeling was amazing! Then, she sprinkled a pinch of pink salt which dissolved the jelly and turned it into liquid again – this part was fun!
BEFORE
AFTER
After drying my feet with a towel, she applied the scrub to peel off the dead skin and then, using a wet towel, she cleaned off the scrub and the dead skin with it. With the help of a brush, she applied the mask on my hands and feet and wrapped them with a plastic roll. After 15 minutes, she wiped off the mask and the result was a silky soft skin that smelled like fruits. I could not stop touching my skin and smelling the aroma after she massaged the lotion into my skin. It was time to rinse the treatment off my hair by the time I was done with my manicure and pedicure and the result was beyond my expectations – my hair was so unusually soft and healthy. I got a blow dry and large natural waves that day and absolutely loved them! Next time you decide to get these treatments, make sure you call them on +965 257 10810. What glam is glamorous this fall? Well, here is a new season; new trends, new tips and new colors, why not? We have been wondering what’s in this time, and here are our findings: Black liner shows its versatility, red lipstick feels exciting again and flushed skin replaces contouring this fall. Here are the beauty trends to know for the season.
Play with your shadow The best for getting perfect smoky eyes is to blend until you think you can’t blend anymore and then keep going. The idea is to get ultra-diffused shadow that, although intense, still feels soft.
Lash out The power of mascara, falsies and lash add-ons is unbeatable! Focus on layered lengthening and volume maximizing mascaras on the top and bottom to achieve the prettiest lashes of the season.
Get liners out of line Is the black liner getting boring? Kohl is also gorgeous when it’s simple and smudgy, giving the eye the ultimate dramatic feature.
Get dark lips Red lipstick may not be revolutionary, but when it disappears for a few seasons in favor of nude tints and clear balms, it makes its come back in significant.
Blush lighter It’s time to put aside your taupe dark sculpting powders and buy warm peach and rose blushes that make you look like you just went on a walk on a cold night in winter. WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

a unique talent in Formative Art Khalid Al-Shatti
K
halid Al-Shatti began his artistic journey in 1986 with his first solo exhibition, which he believes was his first real step into the world of formative arts, and the local art circles. Of his artistic development, the artist says: “My first painting was a collage of various textiles I had been working with, and the idea behind it was to showcase the skills I had developed at the time. As an artist, I continually undergo constant evolution and dynamic changes, exploring various genres, techniques, mediums, and philosophic concepts”. We met the artist and heard him speak about his perspective towards arts as well as his biggest pleasures as an artist. Who is Khalid Al-Shatti? I am a Kuwaiti formative artist. I graduated from the faculty of education in Kuwait University in Art Education. I’m a member in various associations such as Kuwait Formative Arts Society, UNISCO and many more. I started in 1986 when I was just 16. I’m a painter and a sculptor. When did you know you had something for art? I did not know I had anything to do with art until I was in high school. Prior to that, I was always an athlete and particularly a swimmer. I believed I had the talent but only paid enough attention to it when I diverted my focus from swimming to painting. I was only 16 when I launched my own exhibition all on my own. The drawings were done using charcoal; this is how I started since I was more familiar with basic drawing than with colors. It was quite rewarding and I received very positive feedback and encouraging compliments from family, friends and the exhibition visitors. Who was your biggest support? Besides family, friends and people who appreciated my work. Mohammed Al-Sanousi, a former Minister of Information was present at the opening of my first exhibition. This gave me a great push. 70
THETALK / October / 2015
What were your first drawings about? Fantasia or Fantastic art as they call it which is not restricted to a specific school of artists, geographical location or historical period. It can be characterized by subject matter – which portrays non-realistic, mystical, mythical or folkloric subjects or events –
and style, which is representational and naturalistic, rather than abstract. Did you know what you were doing back then? I definitely knew what it was about – I used to
“Appreciation and good appraise can fly me over the moon”
do intensive reading and I would always make sure I visited art galleries and museums wherever I traveled. Normally, as a teenager, the biggest interests would be sports, car, videogames... etc. Mine were three: books, museums and art galleries. Where did you travel during your teenage? I traveled to the most inspiring cities when it comes to art such as Switzerland and France. I took courses in Art in Nice, France. I was 19 years old back then and was still a student. Do you think art can be taught, or is it merely a talent? I believe that everyone knows how to draw; there is none with who lacks the ability to sketch. If we were to classify, we would distinguish between painters and artists. While painters can portray an existing landscape or item, artists have the ability to come up with something unusual looking at something, or completely imagine something and
depict it from their own imagination. There are artworks sold on streets for few pounds, there are, however, artworks that are sold for millions – this can be an explanation. Is it a gift from god or is it a personal effort? An artist should be aware of everything and must update their background and knowledge continuously through reading and examining art all around the world. When an artist presents their work, do they expect the audience to interpret it in a certain way? To a certain extent, an artist expects a part of the audience with adequate background and knowledge in arts to perceive the artwork in a certain way. What are your rituals when you are working? Coffee first, during and throughout the process.
What is your favorite color? Blue. I love blue and try to include it in all my paintings. What do you like most about being an artist and what’s the most wearing about it? I do not like inexplicable negative feedback, wrongful interpretation of my art and the depreciation of art and artists in general. Equally, appreciation and good appraise can fly me over the moon. One of the happiest moments was when I launched my first exhibition. What achievements are you proud of the most? I am the only Kuwaiti artist who has two paintings signed with his name at the American Congress. It was after the disastrous Katrina floods in USA when Al Diwan Amiri in Kuwait decided to show sympathy towards through the aftermath of the hurricanes. Sheikh Nasser AlSabah thought art was the best way to express sympathy, I was selected among all the artists to present two paintings in this event – it was a great honor. WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

Heavenly hours with Glashütte Original The complexity and beauty of the moon phase display When the clouds let us see it, it rules the night sky: the moon. For thousands of years the earth’s satellite has cast its spell on human beings and influenced their lives. Its elementary forces affect the ocean’s tides, the growth of plants and even how we sleep. There’s no denying it: human life is closely bound up with the rhythm of its irresistible allure. The myth of the moon In classical antiquity the moon was already believed to influence secular and religious life: whether as the goddess Luna of Roman mythology or the Egyptian god Thot, the quiet wanderer was repeatedly linked to a supernatural power. It magic lives on into the present day. In China, for example, one still celebrates the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, on
the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the old Chinese calendar. In Chinese culture the full moon is considered a symbol of harmony and community, and the festival is accordingly celebrated in the traditional manner with family and friends, admiring together the splendid full moon. One of the most charming complications in the art of watchmaking. The meaning of the moon influences our daily life not just in emotional and cultural ways, but also in practical terms: the sun and moon form the basis of our calendar and temporal divisions. It is no surprise, therefore, that the moon phase cycle has attracted the attention of watchmakers as well. As early as the 16th century the image of the moon appears on some of the most ambitious clocks of the time – and undoubtedly some of the most
beautiful: the moon in its orbit, lit by the sun, gives rise to the fascinating spectacle of a waxing, waning crescent in the heavens. To complete one revolution always requires approximately 29.53 days, while as we know a month has from 28 to 31 days. With a moon phase display the moon’s progress is usually indicated by means of a rotating disc beneath a dial window. To set the display one need only ascertain the current moon phase, by consulting, for example, an up-to-date lunar calendar. The watchmakers at Glashütte Original, too, have been inspired by the phenomenon and have created two models in commemorating the important role of the moon: the PanoMaticLunar for men and the PanoMatic Luna for women. Whether the moon is seen as male or female, its fascination is undoubtedly universal. WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

In the same way, the minute circle crowning the movement, revealed like a rare object, also demonstrates this ever-present concern for functionality.
Rendez-Vous Celestial A sparkling finery exalting the beauty of the stars The distinctive seductive power of the Rendez-Vous Celestial lies in its ability to embellish the woman who wears it. Enriched by the expertise cultivated by the Manufacture in the Vallée de Joux, the new Rendez-Vous Celestial by Jaeger-LeCoultre subtly distils its horological messages while also showcasing the beauty of a face exquisitely enhanced by Métiers Rares® (rare crafts). In tribute to astronomy, its flamboyant finery reflects the colours of the sun through the unusual choice of bordeaux aventurine. The sophisticated aesthetic of this
radiant, fiery new creation exercises an irresistible magnetic attraction. As part of the tribute that Jaeger-LeCoultre is paying to astronomy this year, the palette of colours gracing its new creation naturally explores variations in blue – evoking an immediate connection with the celestial canopy.Yet the observation of the heavenly bodies, considered the most ancient of sciences, was long focused essentially on the sun. The luminosity of this star, with a history believed to date back more than 4 billion years, has regularly increased throughout its life. This incandescent giant inspired the Grande Maison to create a new Rendez-Vous Celestial clothed in a fiery mantle.
The dial is adorned in bordeaux aventurine, whose deep tones dotted with glittering spangles set off a powerful sensual wave. Depending on how the light plays across the watch, the RendezVous Celestial fleetingly and alternately shimmers in vibrant red, mineral ochre and even orange shades. The ability of bordeaux adventurine to so convincingly embody the sun, source of light and life, stems from its nature as a symbol of energy and creativity. Thus associated with the emblematic Rendez-Vous aesthetic, it transforms the latter into a remarkable seductive asset, like a powerful talisman.

At the same time the virtual project also previews Bugatti’s future design language. “Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo is the first stage on a new journey that Bugatti is embarking on following the successful completion of its Veyron chapter, and which will culminate in the unveiling of the next Bugatti super sports car in the not too distant future,” says Wolfgang Dürheimer,
President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. “This project showcases Bugatti’s new design language, which we have developed to celebrate this new chapter in our company history.” “Bugatti will remain clearly positioned in the future as a brand with a strong profile,” continues Dürheimer. “We’re building the world’s fastest, most exclusive, most luxurious and most powerful production super sports car.” The collaboration with Polyphony Digital, creator of Gran Turismo, allows Bugatti to make the highly exclusive brand available to fans, gamers

The PlayStation video game franchise has sold over 70 million units since its launch in 1997. “Our Veyron series was limited to 450 vehicles, all of which are now owned by proud automotive connoisseurs,” says the Bugatti President. “However, our fans, who love the brand and have remained loyal to us for years throughout the world, are unlimited in number. More driving pleasure, performance and efficiency: the new Porsche 911 Carrera All-New Fiat 500X The 911 has been the world’s best-selling sports car for decades. Now a new generation of Porsche’s iconic models has arrived to further extend its dominance. With innovative turbo flat engines, an advanced chassis designed for optimum performance, as well as a new infotainment system, the new model is exceedingly well-equipped to continue the 911 Carrera’s reign as a segment leader. Thanks to more than four decades of experience with turbo engines – in both motor racing and production sports cars – the new engines in the 911 Carrera set benchmarks in terms of performance, driving pleasure and efficiency. The rear-axle steering, available as an option for the Carrera models for the first time, further extends the range of driving dynamics. A range of exterior features have been refined, these include new headlights with four-point daytime running lights, a redesigned rear lid with vertical louvres and new rear lights, featuring the distinctive four-point brake lights. In the interior, the updated Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with a multi-touch

display offers a considerably expanded range of functions and simplified operation. New turbocharged engines: 20 hp increase coupled with lower fuel consumption The completely new engine generation with bi-turbo charging, raises the emotional driving pleasure in the 911 Carrera to an even more intense level, with 370 hp at the rear of the vehicle, waiting to be unleashed and converted into sporty propulsion. The engine in the new 911 Carrera S also now delivers more power, with 420 hp. Both derivatives now have a power increase of 20 hp, and a displacement of three litres. The significant power increase in the new Carrera S is a combination of turbochargers with modified compressors, enhanced exhaust system and tuned engine management. The new Porsche engines are characterised by significantly increased torque (60 Nm in each version) with maximum torque of 450 Nm and 500 Nm respectively, delivered constantly from a low 1,700 rpm up to 5,000 rpm, ensuring excellent driving performance. At the same
time with a maximum level of 7,500 rpm, the new engines clearly exceed conventional turbo engines – underscored by the typical sonorous Porsche engine sound. Every new 911 boasts performance and efficiency enhancements compared with predecessors. For example, depending on the model variant, the new engine generation is almost twelve percent more efficient: fuel consumption is reduced by up to a litre per 100 kilometres. The 911 Carrera with Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission now consumes just 7.4 l/100 km (a reduction of 0.8 l per 100 km), while the 911 Carrera S with PDK consumes 7.7 l/100 km (1.0 l less per 100 km). The new 911 also boasts impressive performance: the 911 Carrera Coupé with PDK and Sport Chrono Package sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds – making it two tenths of a second faster than its predecessor. The 911 Carrera S with PDK and Sport Chrono Package performs its showcase discipline in just 3.9 seconds (also 0.2 s faster). This makes it the first
911 in the Carrera family to undercut the magic four second mark. Top speeds for both models have also increased further; the 911 Carrera now has a top speed of 295 km/h, while the 911 Carrera S now reaches an impressive 308 km/h. In conjunction with the optional Sport Chrono Package the 911 Carrera has a mode switch on the steering wheel for the first time, derived from the revolutionary 918 Spyder. The mode switch consists of a rotary ring with four positions for choosing a driving mode, this includes: “Normal”, “Sport”, “Sport Plus” and “Individual”. Depending on the equipment, the latter setting enables drivers to configure their own individual vehicle set-up, for example the PASM, active engine mounts, PDK shifting strategy and sports exhaust
system. In combination with PDK transmission the mode switch has an additional button, the “Sport Response Button”. When this button is pressed the drivetrain is pre-conditioned for maximum acceleration for 20 seconds, for example before overtaking manoeuvres. For this, the optimum gear is engaged and the engine management adjusted to an even more spontaneous response for a short time.
(Porsche Active Suspension Management) chassis, which lowers the ride height by ten millimetres, is a standard feature on board all Carrera models. It improves stability during fast cornering even more. At the same time the new shock absorber generation, with its wider spread characteristics, enhances comfort, whilst also improving the body connection during dynamic driving. New standard wheels with five slim twin spokes feature tyres with reduced rolling resistance and enhanced performance. Furthermore, on all variants the width of the rear rims has increased by 0.5 to 11.5 inches and the rear tyres of the 911 Carrera S now measure 305 instead of 295 millimetres. The active rear-axle steering, that is available as an option for the 911 Carrera S, is chassis technology adopted from the 911 Turbo and 911 GT3. It supports high driving stability when changing lanes at high speeds and ensures greater manoeuvrability in city traffic thanks to the reduction of the turning circle by 0.5 metres. The improved handling is transmitted to the driver via the new steering wheel generation design taken from the 918 Spyder. The basic steering wheel has a diameter of 375 millimetres, whereas the optional GT sports steering wheel measures 360 millimetres.
A standard feature: reengineered PASM chassis lowers the ride height by ten millimetres The 911 Carrera is the benchmark for driving dynamics of all-round sports cars, with every new generation Porsche further offering a balance between everyday comfort and circuit performance. For the first time, the PASM
For unlimited everyday practicality Porsche offers a hydraulic lift system with integrated lifting cylinders in the struts of the front axle. Pressing a button increases the ground clearance at the front by 40 millimetres within 5 seconds and thus prevents the vehicle underbody from hitting the ground, for example on steep garage exits.

Six healthy foods you might be eating wrong!
While we all have the best intentions when we choose to start noshing on healthy foods, we need to be aware of the fact if we eat them the wrong way, we could be missing out on valuable nutrients or getting more calories than we bargain for. Here are six good-foryou foods commonly eaten in not-sohealthy ways. Apples An apple makes the perfect snack because it’s sweet, juicy, and full of fiber to satiate your hunger cravings. Most of the vitamins and minerals are found in the peel, such as vitamins A and C, calcium, potassium, folate, and iron, so if you peel the skin, you’re throwing out all that nutrition. Be sure to buy organic apples and crunch on this fruit with the red, yellow, or green peel intact. Sweet Potatoes High in vitamin A and bursting with antioxidant 96

and anti-inflammatory properties, the sweet potato the food you shouldn’t pass up. Sweet potato fries are definitely not the healthiest way to enjoy this veggie, because it adds tons of fat and calories. Boiling is a good method, as long as you don’t mash the sweet potatoes with tons of butter and brown sugar. Instead, try steaming diced chunks or baking the potato whole. Peanut Butter A great source of quick protein and one of the best pre-workout snacks, peanut butter should simply be made by crushing peanuts, but if you are not mindful about which jar you choose, it might also contain added sugar, salt, and hydrogenated oils. Avoid the unnecessary fats and sugars by choosing natural peanut butter or making your own in a food processor. Beans The problem is that most beans come in cans lined with BPA. Exposure to this chemical has been linked to cancer, heart disease, and early
puberty. Canned beans are also high in sodium, so soaking and boiling your own beans is your best bet. Dried Fruit When you need a quick nibble or a healthy way to satisfy a sugar craving, dried fruit is a healthy option. Well, that is if it’s not covered in sugar. Make sure to choose dried fruits made without added sugars. Sometimes you can tell just by looking at the fruit, but if you’re not sure, check the package. Of course, on a lazy Sunday, you can also make your own — try these recipes for dried mango and dried cantaloupe. Broccoli Many people can’t eat raw broccoli and would much rather munch on these florets only when cooked. Boiling broccoli may be traditional, but it is not the healthiest cooking method, as it zaps away the nutritional value. You can lightly steam or sauté it for only a few minutes, just to slightly soften the stems and produce a bright green hue.

Located halfway between the Equator and the North Pole, Romania is the 12th largest country in Europe. Romania’s terrain is almost evenly divided between mountains, hills and plains. Although not as high as the Alps, the Carpathian Mountains extend over 600 miles in Romania, in the shape of an arch. They are divided into three major ranges: the Eastern (Oriental) Carpathians, the Southern Carpathians (also known as the Transylvanian Alps), and the Western Carpathians. Each of these ranges feature a variety of landscapes, due to the different types of terrain (glacial, karstic, structural, and volcanic). Romania’s mountains are a great destination for numerous outdoor activities including: climbing, hiking, biking and river-rafting. Restaurant REVIEW
The one and only in town Haute Gourmet HotDog
S
tepping into Haute Hotdog Gourmet, a local diner in Kuwait City, feels like a creative alternative to the many processed hotdogs we crave. The interior of the restaurant has a very impressive theme – pinkish taupe brick walls and retro red, wooden furnishings, and artistic tableaus on the wall. The facing wall is laden with a very eye-catching graffiti, presenting a character called “Dandy” – a sophisticated English man who came up with the idea of a hotdog gourmet, for his wife to enjoy her favorite meal seated while enjoying the street scene at the same time. The idea was to transmit the concept from being merely a street food into a dining experience.

THETALK / October / 2015
The restaurant’s menu is simple and focused, offering 8 hotdogs with different ingredients and toppings: Classic, Chicago,Chili, Mac & Cheese, Dandy, Casual Friday, Coco and Mademoiselle. All presented in a soft brioche bun, the hotdogs are made with fresh beef with no skin, smoked and served fresh every day. Although the appetizers’ part is not very diverse, the items are delicious. We tried the Haute Fries, the Chicken Caesar Salad and the Fries ‘n’ Dog and Onion Rings as a side dish to complement the rest of the “comfort food” as we like to call it! Our desserts arrived fresh and appealing – the
Haute Couture deep fried apple pie with salted cinnamon caramel sauce was lying beside a scope of vanilla ice-cream. Being a bigger fan of chocolate and “Nutella” in particular, we indulged in what they called on the menu “I’m on a Diet”, a comforting bed of chocolate sauce topped with special chocolate sauce, vanilla ice-cream, caramel sauce and caramel popcorn. Their drinks menu includes soft drinks, fresh juices, iced tea, Dr. Pepper, Budwiser, sparkling water, black coffee and tea. Haute Gourmet Hotdogs is located in Sharq near the Sharq Police Station.
