or years, the medical industry has used the powerful combination of Glutaraldehyde and Quaternary Ammonium together as a medical instrument sterilant. Internationally, the Poultry Industry has recognized the combination of Glutaraldehyde and Quaternary Ammonium as the most effective antimicrobial combination available. PRESERVE INTERNATIONAL now offers these active ingredients in SYNERGIZE as a CLEANER-DISINFECTANT for use in all areas of live production in the poultry industry at a use rate of 1/2 ounce per gallon of water. Using the powerful antimicrobial action of Glutaraldehyde (7%), combined with high levels of the cationic surfactant activity of Quaternary Ammonium (26%), SYNERGIZE allows the quaternary ammonium to permeate the cell membrane which “drives” the glutaraldehyde “inside” the cell to destroy the microorganisms.
This “synergistic” effect is ONLY provided by SYNERGIZE. Field results indicate that SYNERGIZE is the most effective cleaner-disinfectant available today and contains NO carcinogens. SYNERGIZE has a patented formulation and is EPA Registered. Synergize has become the cleaner-disinfectant of choice for Hatcheries, Breeder houses and Growout houses, as well as Live hauling equipment and Shoe baths. Synergize’s unique formulation makes it extremely user-friendly with no offensive odors, leaving a light pine smell. Synergize also has a neutral pH so there is no concern about corrosion to equipment. ®
Seeing is believing and once you have tried SYNERGIZE you will be convinced.

NCC responds to recent Consumer Reports article Is chicken safe? WASHINGTON — The National Chicken Council notes that Americans eat about 160 million servings of chicken every single day, and 99.99 percent of those servings are consumed safely. Unfortunately, this particular statistic was left out of the “in depth” piece recently published by Consumer Reports. U.S. chicken producers rely upon the best science, microbiology and technology to reduce foodborne pathogens, and spend tens of millions of dollars every year in the name of food-safety research which can be credited with the significant decrease in foodborne pathogens present in chicken over the last several years, NCC added. “The belief that affordable food means it is lower in quality or compromised in some way stands in stark contrast to the hard work and efforts of American agriculture, USDA and the hundreds of thou-
sands of U.S. farmers and food producers who work tirelessly to produce a quality protein that is the envy of the world and enjoyed by millions of Americans,” said NCC President Mike Brown. From 2001 to 2010 — the latest 10-year period for which data are available — outbreaks related to E. coli, salmonella and other pathogens decreased by more than 40 percent. In the past five years, salmonella in chickens has decreased by 55 percent. “Eliminating bacteria entirely is always the goal,” Brown added. “But in reality, it’s simply not feasible.” Any raw agricultural product, including fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and poultry, is susceptible to naturally occurring bacteria, NCC noted. Whether it’s labeled “organic,” “natural,” purchased in the grocery store or at your local farmers’ market, there is the potential that fresh food could make us sick, if im-
properly handled or cooked. Which is why the NCC agrees with Consumer Reports on one point — we all play an important role in ensuring food safety for our families, from the farm to the table. “No legislation or regulation can keep bacteria from existing,” Brown added. “The only way to ensure our food is safe 100 percent of the time is by following science-based procedures when raising/growing, handling and cooking it. Right now, we’re at 99.9 percent but we’re going to keep working to reach 100. “We take the safety of our chicken very seriously,” said Brown. “After all, our families are eating the same chicken as you and yours.” NCC concerns with Consumer Reports report on chicken includes: yy E. coli, enterococcus and klebsiella pneumoniae are not considered food safety risks in chicken

•Report (Continued from page 1)
by the USDA. yy Consumer Reports tested 316 samples, or four-thousands of 1 percent (0.0004 percent) of approximately 42 million pounds of fresh chicken products in grocery stores on any given day. yy All bacteria, antibiotic resistant or not, is killed by proper cooking. yy The presence of generic E. coli, which is everywhere in our environment, is not a guaranteed indicator for fecal contamination, as suggested. Most E. coli strains are completely harmless and these findings do not differentiate between those strains and the ones that can cause foodborne illness, like E. coli O157:H7. yy All E. coli strains are killed through proper cooking. In addition, chicken processing plants strictly adhere to USDA’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy for visible fecal material as a food safety standard. yy Health experts, veterinarians and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration have all refuted the talking point used by Consumer Reports that “80 percent of all of the antibiotics sold in the U.S. each year are used in animal production.” Pound for pound, humans and their pets use 10 times the amount of antibiotics than what is used in food animal production. About 1/3 of the antibiotics used on farms aren’t used in human medicine at all. yy Ten years after Denmark’s pork industry ceased using antibiotics for subtherapeutic purposes, the use of antibiotics prescribed by veterinarians in Denmark to treat sick animals has increased more than 100 percent. The total antibiotic use in the pork industry was higher than before the ban as reported in 2010 by DANMAR, the Danish monitoring agency. yy As the FDA has stated, “it is inaccurate and alarmist to define bacteria resistant to one, or even a few, antibiotics as “Superbugs” if these same bacteria are still treatable by other commonly used antibiotics.
yy The strains of Salmonella Heidelberg associated with the outbreak on the West Coast in 2013 were sensitive to the most commonly recommended and prescribed antibiotics used to treat infections with salmonella. The health care providers for the people who were ill had the most common antibiotics used to treat foodborne illnesses available to them and they remain effective. NCC response to Consumer Reports recommendations “To make chicken safer”: yy FDA has already moved forward with implementing its plan to phase out over a three year period the growth promoting use of medically important antibiotics in food producing animals. yy Passing a law or regulation to fight bacteria will not magically make it go away. Salmonella are microscopic living organisms found worldwide in cold- and warm-blooded animals and occur naturally in birds’ intestines. What will make salmonella disappear is science, research and breaking the chain of salmonella at every stage of production from the breeder farm to the processing plant. Coupled with proper handling and cooking to 165 degrees F, chicken is safe to eat 100 percent of the time. yy Through mandatory reporting by establishments of adulterated or misbranded product, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) monitoring of illness outbreaks, and the agency’s own routine in-plant and in-commerce surveillance, USDA Food Safety & Inspection Service is readily able to identify and respond to potential food-safety situations. yy In a report specifically about the safety of chicken, it is ironic that Consumer Reports chose to come out in opposition to a plan USDA says will prevent 5,200 foodborne illnesses every year. yy A new FSIS performance standard is expected for chicken parts sometime in 2014. NCC is taking this very seriously and we are working collectively as an industry
to determine more opportunities in second processing that will further decrease salmonella on chicken parts. NCC notes the following for keeping salmonella off of chicken: Proper handling and cooking in the kitchen is the last step in keeping salmonella off of chicken, not the first. It all starts even before the egg. Healthy breeder flocks lead to healthy chicks — measures are taken to prevent diseases from passing from hen to chick and to ensure that natural antibodies are passed on which help keep the birds healthy. At the hatchery, strict sanitation measures and appropriate vaccinations ensure the chicks are off to a healthy start. At the feed mill, the finished feed of corn and soybean meal is heat treated, which kills any bacteria that may be present. On the farm, farmers adhere to strict biosecurity measures and the chickens are routinely monitored by a veterinarian to keep them healthy. At processing plants, the U.S. federal meat and poultry inspection system complements efforts by chicken processors to ensure that the nation’s commercial supply of meat and poultry products is safe, wholesome and correctly labeled and packaged. Chicken processing facilities use a variety of intervention strategies at their critical control points that might include: the use of food-grade rinses that kill or reduce the growth of potential foodborne pathogens; organic sprays to cleanse the chickens and inhibit bacteria; and metal detectors to make sure that no foreign object makes its way into a product. Microbiological tests for pathogens are then conducted by companies and federal laboratories to help ensure that food safety systems are working properly. NCC notes that the numbers tell the progress: yy According to the FSIS Quarterly Progress Report released on Oct. 26, 2013, 2.6 percent of young chicken carcasses tested positive
for salmonella — a fraction of the FSIS performance standard of 7.5 percent. yy The prevalence of salmonella on raw young chicken carcasses is down 26 percent over the first quarter of 2013 and represents a decrease of 55 percent during the past five years. yy During the last five years, the prevalence of salmonella on ground chicken has been reduced by 50 percent. yy From 2001 to 2010, the latest 10-year period for which data are available, outbreaks related to E. coli, salmonella and other pathogens decreased by more than 40 percent. NCC also notes the following on antibiotic use in raising chickens and antibiotic resistance: Administering antibiotics isn’t the only way to keep chickens healthy — it is one tool in the toolbox in raising healthy birds and producing a wholesome food supply. And contrary to popular belief, antibiotics are not always used in chicken production; rather, they are administered only when needed to prevent and treat disease. On those
occasions, they are used judiciously to treat and prevent disease under the care of a veterinarian. For those antibiotics that are FDA-approved for use in raising chickens, the majority of them are not used in human medicine and therefore do not represent any threat of creating resistance in humans. There are several published, peerreviewed risk assessments showing any threat to human health from antibiotic use in livestock and poultry production is negligible, if it exists at all. The CDC has stated that most acute problem with antimicrobial resistance is with hospitals, and the most resistant organisms in hospitals are emerging in those settings, because of poor antimicrobial stewardship among humans. Still, chicken producers are phasing out subtherapeutic or “growth uses” of antibiotics important to treating humans. NCC will continue to work with FDA to phase out by 2016 the growth-promoting use of medically important antibiotics in raising chickens. More information can be obtained from NCC at www.nationalchickencouncil.org.

FSIS releases comprehensive strategy to reduce salmonella WASHINGTON — USDA’s Food Safety & Inspection Service has released its Salmonella Action Plan that outlines the steps it will take to address the most pressing problem it faces — salmonella in meat and poultry products. An estimated 1.3 million illnesses can be attributed to salmonella every year, the agency stated. “Far too many Americans are sickened by salmonella every year. The aggressive and comprehensive steps detailed in the Salmonella Action Plan will protect consumers by making meat and poultry products safer.” said Undersecretary for Food Safety Elisabeth Hagen. The Salmonella Action Plan is the agency’s strategy to best address the threat of salmonella in meat and poultry products. The plan identifies modernizing the outdated poultry slaughter inspection system as a top priority. The agency noted that by focusing inspectors’ duties solely on food safety, at least 5,000 illnesses
can be prevented each year. Enhancing salmonella sampling and testing programs is also part of this comprehensive effort, ensuring that these programs factor in the latest scientific information available and account for emerging trends in foodborne illness. Inspectors will also be empowered with the tools necessary to expeditiously pinpoint problems. With more information about a plant’s performance history and with better methods for assessing in-plant conditions, inspectors will be better positioned to detect salmonella earlier, before it can cause an outbreak. In addition, the plan outlines several actions FSIS will take to drive innovations that will lower salmonella contamination rates, including establishing new performance standards; developing new strategies for inspection and throughout the full farm-to-table continuum; addressing all potential sources of salmonella; and focusing the agen-
cy’s education and outreach tools on salmonella. These efforts will build upon the work that USDA has done over the past several years. In 2011, USDA strengthened the performance standards for salmonella in poultry with a goal of significantly reducing illnesses by 20,000 per year. And through the Salmonella Initiative Program, plants are now using processing techniques designed to directly reduce salmonella in raw meat and poultry. With these technologies and tough policies, salmonella rates in young chickens have dropped more than 75 percent since 2006, FSIS notes. More information about the Salmonella Action Plan. can be found at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/wps/ portal/fsis/topics/food-safety-education/get-answers/food-safetyfact-sheets/foodborne-illness-anddisease/salmonella/sap.

Rabobank notes 2014 outlook for poultry NEW YORK — Rabobank says the outlook for the global poultry sector in 2014 is generally bullish, driven by the tailwind of sharply lower feed costs and tight global supplies of pork and beef (which are poultry’s main substitutes). In a new report, Rabobank says that in the third quarter, producers in the Americas enjoyed another quarter of favorable margins as tight supplies of competing proteins kept prices high and lower corn and soy meal prices drove more favorable feed costs, while European Union producers follow here with some delay. Bucking a five year trend, Western Hemisphere producers outperformed their counterparts in the Eastern Hemisphere on profit margin for Q3 and for most of 2013. “Global poultry fundamentals for 2014 look positive, with cost relief coming from lower feed costs, high prices of competing proteins and recently improved export volumes, but supply growth discipline will be the key element between profitable and not-profitable industries under these bullish market fundamentals,” said NanDirk Mulder, Rabobank analyst. On a regional basis, the robust profitability in the Americas of the last few quarters is expected to continue in 2014, with poultry pricing benefiting from tight supplies of pork and beef, although the recent slowdown of Asian demand may cause a new challenge for the industry, the group noted. For Europe, the latest projections for 2014 indicate growth of
0.6 percent, which is estimated to be in line with EU demand. Under such circumstances, the industry should be able to benefit from favorable market conditions with tight pork and beef markets and lower feed prices, Rabobank said. Conditions in Russia are improving after a tough year, and the country will benefit from price support from the local government. In South Africa, the poultry industry will enjoy new safeguards from Brazilian imports. However any optimism here, is tempered by large and growing imports from the EU, resulting in a mixed outlook for South Africa in 2014, the group added. “Despite the broadly positive global outlook, the challenge remains to keep markets balanced,” Mulder said. “Key Asian markets of China and India are in the midst of a supply glut because of weak demand following food safety and animal disease issues (China) and slower economic growth (India). Early indicators for 2014 reflect better conditions for both markets as supply levels tighten, but in the case of Thailand, a big concern will once more be oversupply.” Rabobank said that it believes that animal disease and food safety will continue to be major issues in 2014. The poultry industry in China has not yet recovered from the outbreak of H7N9 this spring, which has put consumption growth under pressure. In Mexico, the industry is rebuilding domestic supply but there is a lingering risk that the bird flu will reappear. More information can be obtained at www.rabobank.com.
Other Business News Tyson Foods marks donation anniver. SPRINGDALE, Ark. — Tyson Foods Inc. on Dec. 17, marked the 20th anniversary of its partnership with the Watershed Human and Community Development Agency Inc. with a 30,000 pound food donation. Since 1993, the company has given more than 750,000 pounds of protein to the agency that serves the Little Rock community. Rev. Hezekiah Stewart, executive director of the Watershed Agency; and John Tyson, chairman of Tyson Foods, spoke at the event and helped distribute food baskets to those in need. “The residents of this state are so fortunate to have the Tyson family and Tyson Foods,” Stewart said. “I believe they are true servants of God with their benevolence to those in need in this state, around the world, and especially here in Little Rock.” Tyson Foods first donated protein to the Watershed Agency in 1993, making the event its first official hunger relief donation to that organization. “We’re pleased to continue the important tradition by providing another load of food to this important organization,” Tyson said. “We’re honored to once again work with Rev. Stewart and the Watershed Agency to help people in need. This partnership is helping move the needle in fighting hunger right here in my home state.” Tyson Foods has been active in the fight against hunger for more than a decade, donating more than 94 million pounds of protein since 2000. The company’s “KNOW Hunger” campaign, initiated in 2011, is focused on hunger awareness and helping more people understand and join the effort to eliminate hunger in America. The company partners with Share Our Strength, Lift Up America, Feeding America, and the League of United Latin American Citizens
to raise awareness and help feed the hungry across the nation. More information on Tyson’s hunger relief efforts can be obtained at www.tysonhungerrelief.com.

Loma Systems Booth: 5726 Loma’s flagship X5 X-ray inspection system incorporates new features which bring industry-leading levels of product integrity to the busiest of food packing lines and peace of mind to retail suppliers. Responding to user demands for ease of cleaning and reduced maintenance, the X5 X-ray system has been redesigned to deliver maximum uptime in round-the-clock manufacturing sites while identifying and rejecting the smallest contaminants. Retailer compliance demands the highest levels of cleanliness and this is where the X5 shines. The rounded, sloping surfaces of the system ensure that food particles and washdown droplets cannot accumulate on its surfaces, unlike equipment with flat surfaces which can leave areas of potential contamination. Additionally impermeable seals have been added to the X-ray cabinet to prevent water ingress. A new tubular framework, made from high quality 304 grade stainless steel, is equally easy to clean and is robust enough to withstand harsh working conditions. 800-872-5662

Feeder line monitor Chore-Time Booth: 6024
Chore-Time’s CHORE-TRONICS® Feeder Line Run-Time Monitor provides a diagnostic look at what is going on in the poultry house by monitoring feeder line and/or fill system function. Proper feeder line and fill system operation is one of the best indications of whether the birds are eating as they should. The CHORE-TRONICS Run-Time Monitor helps producers discover potential performance problems by providing the answers to questions such as these: Are all the feeder lines in the house running? Are all lines running for the same length of time? In split houses, how does the run time in each end of the house compare? On the farm, how does one house compare to another? Disruptions in individual feeder line function can result from a hot or cold spot in the house, uneven bird distribution within the house, a motor or other mechanical failure with the feed line, a fill system malfunction, an empty feed bin, or other irregularities that will adversely affect bird performance. By proactively monitoring feeder line performance, producers can get an early indication of a developing problem so they can resolve it quickly. The Run-Time Monitor can be connected to every feeder line in a poultry house to track the daily run time per line. Each Monitor sends a signal to the CHORE-TRONICS® 2 Control whenever its feeder line runs, building a database of up to 14 days of run-time history. 574-658-4101

Bag exteriors are textured to improve handling and ensure that bags on pallets hold together. Heat sealing is used to eliminate the risk of thread or tape contaminating micro-bins or finished feed. The bags also clean out easily for reduced product shrink. New bags meet U.S. Food & Drug Administration requirements for food packaging and comply with international shipping standards. New, state-of-theart packaging equipment in both the Pendergrass, Ga., and Ames, Iowa, premix plants allows DSM to offer the LDPE bag option to customers. Customers can choose the bag type they prefer when developing their premix specifications. MITE
The northern fowl mite (Ornithonyssus sylviarum) is the most common external poultry parasite in the United States.1 Unchecked, they can impair performance by reducing weight gain or egg production.1 They’re also a nuisance to workers. Elector PSP is approved for control of northern fowl mites — along with flies and other pests — as part of Elanco’s Defense Sequence strategy. One direct application of Elector PSP breaks the mites’ life cycle — ensuring they become less common. Visit Elanco.us for more information about Defense Sequence and parasiticides rotation. The labels contain complete use information, including cautions and warnings. Rendered Animal Products Our nation is increasingly interested in ”green” issues, including reducing waste and recycling. The poultry industry and other animal production industries have been recycling important portions of their operating waste for thousands of years. More recently, the wastes from animal slaughter have been rendered to produce products used for human food, pet food and commercial agricultural feed production. In the United States, the rendering industry got its start producing tallow for soaps and candles, as well as producing leather from animal hides. More recently, meat meals and fats produced by this industry have been used extensively in poultry feeds as concentrated and economical sources of nutrients. We tend to forget that the rendering industry also recycles the unused portions of our meat production, saving us from trying to figure out what to do with large amounts of products people don’t want to eat. We as a poultry industry should be proud that we are able to recycle a large portion of our processing wastes into products that are useful to society (us included). Livestock and poultry production (plus restaurants and grocery stores) in the United States produce around 54 billion pounds (27 million tons) of recyclable processing wastes each year. These are rendered into fats and animal protein meals (and leather, etc.). Consumers in the United States produce approximately 207 million tons of waste each year, around 45 million tons of which is recycled. The poultry and livestock industries, then, are recycling processing wastes equal to 13 percent of our total consumer waste. When compared to the amount of consumer
waste recycled, rendering takes in and uses waste equaling 60 percent of the recycling industry in the United States. We were doing that long before recycling was considered an important tool to protect the environment. As you can imagine, processing wastes (offal, DAF skimmings, etc.) are not the most desirable products, even for a public landfill operator. For this reason, the rendering industry, whether it be independent or integrator-sponsored, does a huge service to the poultry industry and municipalities alike. Processing waste represents a reasonable portion of each bird, steer or pig processed. A 1,000 pound steer produces approximately 400 pounds of processing waste (600 pounds of deboned beef ). First processing of broilers leaves slightly less that 30 percent waste while deboning would leave significantly more than that. When one figures that Alabama produces approximately 20 million broilers at an average of around 5.5 pounds per bird, the weekly waste production figure (based on WOG yield) would be 16,500 tons of processing waste (not including wastewater cleanup). Storing, handling, moving and rendering this much material is a major job. Fortunately, the poultry, livestock and pet food industries have found the products of rendering useful, allowing this system to keep our industry from being snowed under with unwanted animal parts. In addition, this industry takes in 3.8 billion pounds (2 million tons) of waste cooking fats from restaurants each year. The rendering industry produces approximately 8.4 billion lbs (4 million tons) of cleaned–up fats and oils each
year. Some of this is rendered for human consumption (lard), although the bulk goes into animal feeds, biodiesel or replaces natural gas as a fuel source for boilers. Animal feed use of rendered fats is around one-third of the total. Six billion pounds (3 million tons) of meat meals (meat and bone meal, poultry byproduct meal, feather meal, blood meal, etc.) are produced in the United States, with 90 percent going into feed for meat producing animals or pet foods. Once these meat products are transformed in the rendering process, they represent a concentrated source of nutrients that are attractive to nutritionists in formulating feeds to meet the nutritional needs of poultry. Protein, important amino acids, energy and minerals are all abundant in meat meals and help to economically meet birds’ needs for many of the more expensive nutrients. Significant changes have occurred over the decades in the mix of products coming to renderers and where those products go. Recently, the increased interest in the processing of paws for export to the Asian market has allowed companies to sell feet for a good price rather that divert them towards rendering. Of much more impact on the products produced by renderers, and consequently on those available to the commercial feed industry, is the emergence of petfood grade meat meals. Today, a significant portion of rendered animal products are produced to the exacting standards required for pets (and feeds for the aquaculture industry as well). It is not by accident that chickens are fed “feed” and dogs and cats are fed “food”. People view household pets as family members and are willing to pay handsomely for quality in the
foods fed to Fido and Fluffy. As more and more rendered meat product has been diverted to pet food, less product has been available for agricultural use. In addition, less meat and more bone has gone into the remaining products. Poultry nutritionists only include ingredients based on an exhaustive analysis of the nutrient worth of each product, so companies have made good use of the nutrients in today’s meat products. Phosphorus, a major ingredient in bone, is a very expensive nutrient and the highly-digestible phosphorus in meat meals, when combined with the use of phytase in poultry feeds, has reduced the amount of inorganic phosphorus that must be added to feeds. The poultry industry has a number of partners that function in concert with those directly growing birds for meat or egg production. These allied industries provide all manner of necessary services to Alabama’s massive poultry industry. One group that makes a living providing a most important service are the renderers that create something useful out of products that would otherwise be considered liabilities. Along these lines, one of the largest renderers of poultry products in the nation has included poultry farm mortalities in its incoming product stream. Using on-farm freezers to safely store farm mortalities, and following biosecurity protocols for entering and leaving farms, insures safe usage of this input. From a “green” standpoint, reducing the need to dispose of farm mortalities through burial or incineration keeps mortalities from becoming a waste management issue and recycles nutrients for useful purposes.

Mixing fan VAL-CO Booth: 4323 Growers need a cool weather ventilation solution that conditions cool, fresh outside air by mixing it completely with warm inside air before the air is introduced to the birds. Existing cool weather ventilation systems have been less than perfect, with temperature variations of 1-degree to 3-degrees per foot and long periods of time with no air movement. Limited air movement causes moisture to accumulate, resulting in wet litter, which leads to less productivity and lower profits. To combat the cool season challenges, VAL-CO® has designed a system for cool season ventilation that uses a centrifugal fan with an optional metered ceiling inlet. The system, called the Hemisphere Mixing Fan, features a large diameter (48-inches or 72-inches) rotor with radial paddles housed in a steel frame and is mounted to the ceiling of poultry houses. The Hemisphere Fan draws air from the center of the rotor and propels it outwards. This action draws air from below to provide vertical mixing and distributes the air throughout the house. When combined with the optional metered ceiling inlet, the fresh, cool outside air is simultaneously drawn from
above and mixed with the warm air near the ceiling before being introduced to the birds, eliminating the need for exhaust fans to run at high static pressure, nor the need for high velocities at the inlets. Lower static pressure means higher efficiency of operation and greater energy savings. 800-998-2526

Litter handling Brown Bear Booth: 5733 Manufacturer of hydrostatic tractors, loaders and auger/aerator attachments for composting and handling of layer and broiler litter and manure. The units have proven to be very effective in fly, rodent and odor control. Layer manure can be composted year round in the manure pit of the high rise using the smaller skid steer attachment. Litter from broiler houses can be recycled by composting within the house to pulverize, decake, sterilize and flash off the ammonia all in one operation. Flocks do better on recycled composted litter showing less mortalities, less blinding, increased feed conversion and increased bird weight at harvest. 641-322-4220
Light dimmer
End door
Pro-Tech Inc. Booth: 1033 The 2K GREEN RIMMIR-DIMMER by Pro-Tech Inc. is a 2,000 watt reverse phase light dimmer that is revolutionizing the dimming industry. Some of the very important advantages this dimmer has are: soft start every cycle, greater than 98 percent increased noise immunity, biofeedback, increased bulb life, works with any type of bulb and provides a better power factor. The Reverse Phase Technology allows the RIMMIR to soft start the bulbs every half cycle. The rapid switching (every 8.3 milliseconds) of the load on and off is what dims the bulb. Dimmable fluorescent bulbs have a range where they perform the best. It is a broader range with the RIMMIR, but at very low levels they may flicker or turn off with any dimmer. Longevity is reduced at this point. Biofeedback intelligently watches the bulbs and when the bulbs reach the point that the life of the bulb is impaired, the voltage is increased ever so slightly to maintain the bulb at its lowest intensity without endangering the life of the bulb. 704-872-6227

Turkey drinker Ziggity Systems
POULTRY TIMES, January 6, 2014 Booth: 639 Ziggity Systems Inc. has developed a new drinker for adult turkeys that is self-cleaning and built-tosurvive aggressive turkey behavior. Ziggity calls this new drinker the TMax. Ziggity took the same proven concept that made it number one in poult watering and re-engineered it to work for male and female adult turkeys. The company field-tested and fine-tuned the T-Max drinker for more than three years, and results show T-Max ensures the birds receive all the hygienic water they need to thrive and thereby reducing litter costs. Turkeys have poor eye-beak coordination, so Ziggity created a larger target that the birds cannot miss. As the birds peck at the T-Max, it tips and rotates. It is not a stationary drinker like cups used on other systems. The rotating action swishes the water around, selfcleaning the drinker. No manual scrubbing is required. As turkeys
grow, their drinking action becomes increasingly aggressive; and they can rapidly wear out a watering system. Ziggity designed the T-Max drinker with a shock-absorbing flex stem that allows the entire drinker to give. This eliminates breakage and potential leaks. The drinker is made of a durable plastic that is green in color, which turkeys find more attractive. 574-825-5849

Wood shaving mills
Jackson Lumber Harvester Booth: 858 Jackson Wood Shaving Mills use logs and slabs to produce shavings ideal for poultry bedding that’s soft, fluffy, absorbent, free of bugs, weed seeds and toxic chemicals. Several models are available, powered by electric, diesel, gas, or tractor PTO. In the early 1960’s, Jackson Lumber Harvester Co. Inc., became involved in developing machines for producing wood shavings for poultry litter, because the availability of by-product from sawmills and planer mills was gradually being used up, and resulted in a demand for wood shavings. The Jackson Wood Shaving Mill addressed this need for high-quality wood shavings. Since the first wood shaving mill was patented by Clinton Jackson, the company has continued to improve the Jackson Wood Shaving Mills to keep in step with today’s high-tech standards of production. This, along with mechanical-design improvements, make the latest Jackson Wood Shaving Mills capable of producing the highest volume of shavings, while still providing the tops in quality. The Jackson Wood Shaving Mill continues to be the standard in wood shavings production, incorporating the latest electronic technology, with complete operation systems being offered on a variety of models. Jackson also provides plant layout design and installation services for its customers. 715-926-3816

Attic vent Double L Group Booth: 6615 Double L’s GC1140 Fully Insulated Gravity Attic Vent is a 360 degree airflow gravity ceiling inlet. Air enters the vent from the attic and when the vent is open, air is evenly distributed in all directions into the poultry house, resulting in reduced humidity and drier litter conditions. The GC1140 Gravity Vent gently mixes air without creating a down draft, resulting in even temperatures throughout the room. The larger bottom lid directs airflow along ceiling instead of allowing cold air to fall directly onto the birds. From ease of installation to performance, the GC1140 Fully Insulated 360 degree Gravity Vent is proving to be an exceptional poultry vent. Designed for cold climates, the GC1140 has a fully insulated housing that prevents heat loss and has no freeze-up. With the tightest seal on the market, there is no air leakage when the air vent is closed and minimal moisture buildup. The GC1140 Gravity Vent has no blades to break, fall out, or become stuck open or closed. The removable bottom lid makes vent easy to clean and install while the adjustable counterweight allows the GC1140 Vent to open at different static pressures. 563-875-6257

LED light dimmer Precision Lighting Booth: 5615 Precision Lighting Systems Inc. introduces an LED specific dimmer with a programmable time controller, built in. This new concept in dimming will let you operate the unit manually, through an environmental controller, or totally stand alone. You can program in your flock and let the dimmer run the entire lighting program. It has many more options than a standard environmental controller. Rated at 2,000 watts, with two direct legs (A&B), it will handle almost any total LED load in poultry. And because of its reduced wattage, it is eligible for inclusion in many energy rebate programs. The dimmer includes four separate LED Tiers, so will operate most LED lamps in the marketplace. Just pick your Tier. Sealed to retard moisture and contaminants, it wires-up and operates exactly like our present and previous units and carries a one-year limited warranty. 800-737-1837

The Dominator TLC-300 is manufactured by Precision Lighting Systems. This is an agricultural and commercial hard-wire Panel Box Lightning Protector, with dual Surge Capacitance protection. The unique electronic circuitry and patented solid state technology sends lightning to ground, rather than just suppressing it. You are not protected unless you have both lightning protection and surge protection. With the Dominator, you get both. Full breaker box protection, unlimited number of hits and a status indicator light that lets you know your unit is active, at just a glance. Data/Phone Line Protector is included with each Dominator. Generator Protection component is also available. All components are replaceable and are housed in a solid, heavy duty enclosure. 800-737-1837

Foodmate U.S. Booth: 6058 The Foodmate OPTI-LTD Dark Meat Deboning System is a flexible total dark meat deboning solution that can debone whole legs, thighs or drumsticks all on the same machine. The OPTI-LTD Dark Meat Deboner can process both regular and large chickens and can debone 100 pieces per minute. Foodmate’s Dark Meat Deboner is capable of meeting all boneless leg meat specifications while providing increased yield and higher quality of meat. The OPTI-LTD Dark Meat Deboner can process both left and right legs at the same time, with no need to separate the legs. And unlike other deboners, the OPTI-LTD is very easy to load. The deboner removes the meat with low bone content left in the meat and leaves the pin bone on the leg which cuts down on manual trimming. The open design makes the OPTI-LTD easily accessible for cleaning and maintenance. The machine has an all mechanical design and is very simple, easy to maintain and keeps maintenance cost to a minimum. 678-819-5270

Direct-fed microbials Prince Agri Products Booth: 2213 The modern broiler integrator is continually challenged to improve production efficiency and performance. New research has demonstrated the potential benefits of a proprietary blend of plant extracts and direct-fed microbials (DFMs) to help improve the overall health and efficiency of growing broilers. The research study conducted by Prince Agri Products Inc. was presented at the 2013 Poultry Science Association annual meeting. The objective was to assess the impact of Quillaja saponaria and Yucca schidigera and two commercially available DFMs, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus coagulans, when used alone and in combination in broiler diets, as an augmentation of the current, standard antibiotic program. The study demonstrated that the best diet contained Quillaja sopanaria/Yucca schidigera plus Bacillus coagulans combination. This diet provided further synergistic and/or additive benefits, in that a 5 percent improvement in feed utilization related to improved health status was observed. Prince Agri Products markets the Quillaja/Yucca proprietary blend under the brand name Nutrafito Plus and Bacillus coagulans under the brand name Provia 6086. 217-222-8854

AEB Hotline appears regularly in Poultry Times and provides an update on programs and services provided for egg producers by the American Egg Board. Details on any item mentioned may be obtained by contacting AEB at 1460 Renaissance Dr., Park Ridge, Ill. 60068. Phone: 847-296-7043. yy AEB has recently started working with a leading consultant to develop programs dedicated to increasing egg servings in schools. Specifically targeting K-12, the strategy is to show the benefits of eggs to school foodservice directors and the importance of a good egg breakfast. yy The FDA recently published rulemaking regarding the use of the declaration of a food as “Gluten-Free.” Thanks to the efforts of USDA’s Roger Glasshoff, the egg industry can now use this voluntary claim on labels. Gluten-free foods can be labeled in a number of ways, including the terms: — Gluten-free — Free of gluten — No gluten — Without gluten The popularity of gluten-free products has soared in recent years, and this claim could help drive increased interest in eggs. yy Fans of the Incredible Edible Egg on Facebook were treated to savings in honor of World Egg Day on Oct. 11. In just two days, 31,000 coupons offering a savings of $.55 Off the Purchase of Two Dozen Eggs were printed, and AEB gained 14,000 more Facebook fans as a result of this effort. yy The Sterling-Rice Group
predicts yolks will be a big part of 2014 food trends. In 2014, a combined Foodservice and Egg Product Marketing effort will focus on new product development utilizing yolks with the help of Culinary Institute of America (CIA). Consumer Marketing also plans to leverage this information within its outreach efforts including social media posts. yy Recent efforts from the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council in Hong Kong are focused on increasing the usage of U.S. eggs and egg products in the bakery sector. USAPEEC placed a full page advertisement in September’s Today’s Baking, the official magazine for Hong Kong Bakery & Confectionary Association. The advertisement, placed on the inside back cover page of the magazine, featured both U.S. eggs and egg products and noted the safety and high-quality attributes of U.S. eggs and egg products. The ads reached more than 4,000 in this industry. Truck advertising was placed on four delivery trucks that are owned by importers of U.S. eggs in Hong Kong. The advertising carries a very clear statement: “U.S. Fresh Eggs - Hygienic and Safe; Nutritious and Tasty.” These delivery trucks are now driving around Hong Kong, 12 hours a day, seven days a week. USAPEEC will have two to three additional trucks by year’s end. Importers shared that sales of U.S. eggs have increased. In fact, according to the import statistics, U.S. fresh shell eggs to Hong Kong have grown 10 percent during the first nine months of the year.

mitment to protecting the earth’s natural resources through its continuing development of all-natural feed additives and environmental products. Brookside Agra will launch its newest product, all-natural Piggy-Lift piglet nutrient supplement, at its booth at the IPPE. PiggyLift is a fast-acting, liquid nutrient supplement for weak, newborn piglets born with a birth weight below 1,000 grams. Given to weak piglets soon after birth, Piggy-Lift helps to reduce mortality in large litters, prevents weak piglets from starving and provides small piglets with the energy boost they need to find and secure a teat for suckling. Piggy-Lift is particularly efficient in herds diagnosed with Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) virus. 618-628-8300
Gas analyzer WITT Gas Controls Booth: 7820 To simplify the work of quality control staff in companies with gas plants, WITT has updated its range of analyzers. With the PA 7.0 there is now a completely redesigned instrument on the market for measuring the concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The new PA 7.0 has many applications for use in the food industry, for head space analysis or for any process requiring critical limits of oxygen and carbon dioxide. One of the unique features of the new analyzer is that it can do two jobs at the same time. In addition to continuous in-line gas mix monitoring, a random sample can be taken with a sampling needle, such as for checking food packages in a protected atmosphere. This double functionality makes the PA 7.0 the benchmark instrument in its class. 770-664-4447
Gas leak testing WITT Gas Controls Booth: 7820 When it comes to testing packaging for leaks, WITT provides a reasonably priced solution that
POULTRY TIMES, January 6, 2014 works without trace gas. WITT’s new Leak-Master® Easy uses only water and compressed air to operate the uncomplicated test system. The Leak-Master Easy is suitable for testing almost any stable and flexible food, pharmaceutical, industrial and consumer packaging, including vacuum packaging. The test system enables even the smallest leaks to be detected without any test gas or electricity, as it utilizes a Venturi nozzle requiring only compressed air instead of a vacuum pump. 770-664-4447
Salmonella control Battelle Booth: 7533 Salmonella outbreaks in poultry are becoming increasingly commonplace and are a major concern for consumers. “Chicken is one of the riskiest foods, pound for pound, in terms of contamination,” said Battelle Senior Research Scientist Brian Hawkins. Battelle, known for tackling critical national security issues such as terrorism risk assessment for the Department of Homeland Security, has applied those same principles to protecting the chicken roasting in your oven for Sunday dinner. A software modeling program used to chart responses to incidents ranging from biological and chemical attacks in public gatherings to the purposeful contamination of a water supply, has been modified for use in the poultry processing industry by Battelle. PRIA, which stands for Probabilistic Risk Informed Analysis, is a software and modeling tool that allows food safety and defense professionals to proactively assess the effectiveness of mitigation strategies — before an event occurs. 614-424-7208

Microbial tests Neogen Booth: 2729 Neogen Corp. has announced that it has introduced a “clearly better” test system for microbial counts. Neogen’s new NeoFilm microbial tests require only the inoculation of a fabric sample pad and an incubation period. Following incubation, the sample pad is evaluated for bacterial colony growth. NeoFilm tests are available for coliforms, E. coli, yeast and mold, Staphylococcus aureus, and aerobic bacteria. “Our simple NeoFilm tests represent the perfect complement to our product line of six other distinct microbial testing families,” said James Herbert, Neogen’s chairman and CEO. “The global market for convenient microbial tests such as NeoFilm has been estimated to be in excess of $100 million annually. Until now, this market segment has been dominated by one other company; however, with NeoFilm we believe we have a superior product that is technically advanced over the established product.” As a validation of their effectiveness, NeoFilm tests for aerobic count, coliform count, and E. coli/coliform count have received certifi cation from the AOAC Research Institute. Similar valida-
tions are in process for the remainder of the NeoFilm tests. 517-372-9200 Thermo Scientific Booth: 568 Thermo Scientific solutions include the E Scan in-line food analyzer — a Guided Microwave Spectrometer (GMS) for analysis of moisture content, fat, protein and salt properties in food products that pass through pipe and the microPHAZIR GP handheld Near-Infrared (NIR) analyzer for on-site feed material analysis which is battery powered and completely self-contained for portable analysis. 978-657-5555

Seydelmann Booth: 5161 At the IPPE 2014 Seydelmann will be exhibiting several innovative high-performance machines at the booth of its decades-long NorthAmerican partner Reiser. Seydelmann cutters, grinders, mixers and emulsifiers are eminently suitable for processing poultry and meat and for producing different products, including chicken nuggets, hamburgers and emulsified products. Seydelmann Universal Grinders easily process both fresh material and frozen meat blocks down to minus 13 degrees F without changing the worm or cutting set. The VacuumCutter K 204 AC-8 has a 200 l bowl content, a highly developed technology and is suited for integration into production lines. The vacuum function ensures a longer shelf-life and lasting fresh look of the final product due to a strong reduction of atmospheric oxygen in the cutter bowl. It also leads to a stronger extraction of protein and natural taste carriers. Consistency and taste of the product improve significantly. For the production of chicken nuggets the newly developed MixerGrinder MRV 2500, available with an integrated cooling system, is highly recommended. 49-711-490090-36
