Everything That Can Be Invented Has NOT Been Invented

4

“Everything that can be invented has been invented.” This statement was supposedly made in 1899 by Charles H. Duell, the Commissioner of the United States Patent Office. Although most historians doubt that Mr. Duell actually made this statement, even the idea that someone could make that statement seems incredulous to us Dr. Ray Perren President today. From our perspective Lanier Technical College over 100 years later we can see the folly of such thinking. Think about all of the inventions made since 1899! Today we have come to accept that change is one of the only constants in life. Instead of thinking there are no more inventions possible we expect there to be new inventions. Just as the inventions of the last 100 years created new jobs, the advanced technologies of the 21st Century will spawn new career possibilities. Many of today’s Kindergarten students will grow up to work in industries that do not even exist today! One of our

SKF Wins Award

challenges as a nation is to assure that we will have the workforce in place to take these new jobs. How do we meet this great challenge? Science, technology, mathematics, and engineering (STEM) education in our schools will be essential in meeting the workforce demands of the 21st Century. STEM education not only provides instruction in mathematics and science but also helps develop the creative thinking and problem solving skills that will be necessary for the jobs of the future. STEM education is not simply teaching about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, but goes further to show how these important disciplines are applied in everyday life. STEM education is important to the future of our nation. We are no longer competing with the next county for jobs, but we are competing globally with countries such as China, India, Japan, and South Korea. Our young people must be as prepared as the young people from these countries if we are to successfully compete. Fortunately, Georgia has a network of technical colleges that is preparing a workforce that will be ready to

take on the careers created by technological advancements. Lanier Technical College provides hands-on instruction taught by instructors who have industry experience. Georgia has been recognized as the number one state in the nation for workforce development many times over the past ten years. Although Lanier Tech began as a vocational school in the 1960s, today we are preparing graduates to apply STEM technologies in hundreds of careers as varied as nursing, computer programming, machining, welding, criminal justice, horticulture, and criminal justice. Everything that can be invented has NOT been invented. New careers will continue to be created as new technologies are introduced. Lanier Technical College, along with Georgia’s technical college system, is committed to assuring Northeast Georgia has the workforce needed to compete globally. Dr. Ray Perren serves as President of Lanier Technical College. Perren is a lifelong educator having spent 20 years in K-12 and the last 13 years in higher education. He comes to Lanier Tech after serving six years as a technical college president in South Georgia. laniertech.edu

Bill Andrew (left), Flowery Branch City Manager, and Jean-Luc Gardelle, SKF Plant Manager, discuss the Tesla Model S electric car. SKF manufactures ball bearings for the $120,000 electric car and received the top 2013 supplier award from Tesla.

SKF, a ball bearing manufacturer located in Flowery Branch, won the 2013 Supplier Quality award for the bearings it manufactures for Tesla Motors. The Tesla Model S car is electric, and Tesla has very high standards on the bearings (Zero Emission vehicle up to $120,000). The bearings must have very low resistance so the car may efficiently use its battery power for moving the car. Tesla continues to stress the importance of strategic suppliers, and they view SKF as one of their top strategic suppliers now and in the future. Plant Manager Jean-Luc Gardelle stated "it is a great recognition for the work done by SKF Flowery Branch employees, to promote made in America and made in Flowery Branch." skf.com
