HEART DISEASE IN WOMEN The old belief that heart disease only affects older men—queue the image of a man suffering a heart attack after a brisk, cold-morning jog—is long gone. For years, heart disease was commonly thought to affect men more frequently than women. Today, however, the condition is recognized as the nation’s leading cause of death for women—claiming responsibility for approximately one in every five female deaths in the United States. Even so, only around 13 percent of women recognize heart disease as the single greatest threat to their health, according to a survey published by the American Heart Association. While women’s and men’s hearts are nearly identical in appearance, there are slight differences in how they function. These differences mean women with heart disease experience a distinct set of signs and symptoms that differ from those in men. Pain, discomfort or pressure in the chest is often the most common symptom of a heart attack, yet some women have heart attacks without experiencing chest pain or if they do have chest pain, they do not take immediate action. Because women often delay treatment, they typically have poor outcomes. Women are more likely than men to have symptoms such as, shortness of breath, neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back or abdominal pressure, pain in the arms, sweating, unusual fatigue, lightheadedness or dizziness. These symptoms are often subtle and may occur while resting. It is crucial to become familiar with these telltale signs and to take note of subtle changes in the way your body feels. Call your doctor right away if you feel any unusual symptoms.
complications of pregnancy. Research indicates that conditions specific to women during pregnancy such as pre-eclampsia are now considered a risk factor for developing heart disease later in life. Women can reduce their risk of developing heart disease by: • Quitting smoking or continuing to not smoke • Exercising regularly, for 150 to 300 minutes each week • Losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight • Controlling hypertension and diabetes mellitus. • Eating a balanced diet high in whole grains, fruits and vegetables and low in added sugars, salts and saturated or trans fat There are a variety of reasons you should see a cardiologist. If you have any risk factors for heart disease or have a family history of heart problems, we encourage you to schedule an appointment at one of The Heart Center of Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s 15 locations, including Braselton. The Heart Center at NGMC has more than 30 cardiologists and 48 advanced practice providers who are specially trained to recognize the slight differences in symptoms to accurately diagnose and treat heart disease in women. We offer the latest treatments and most advanced technology to help you get back to health quickly. Schedule your appointment today by calling 770-5342020 or visiting heartngmc.org/myappointment.
Pavani Kolakalapudi, MD, Cardiologist at The Heart Center of Northeast Georgia Medical Center
Several risk factors for heart disease in women such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity are similar to risk factors in men. Other risk factors that often play a bigger role in heart disease in women include, diabetes, mental health issues or depression, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, menopause, chemotherapy drugs and radiation therapy or 4

THE HOLIDAYS ARE ALMOST HERE!!

HOW TO SET A TABLE FOR A DINNER PARTY
As if preparing the food for a dinner party wasn't stressful enough, there's also the struggle of setting the table correctly. Whether you're hosting an intimate dinner with friends or a fancy three-course meal during the holidays, there is a certain etiquette to follow when placing plates, utensils, and glasses on the table. Follow this step-by-step guide while preparing for your next dinner party, no matter the occasion. TO SET A CASUAL TABLE: • Put the placemat on the table. • If you're having soup, place the soup bowl on top of the salad plate. • Place a napkin to the left of the setting. • On the left of the plate, place the dinner fork on the napkin
8
TO SET A FORMAL TABLE: You will need a tablecloth, charger, dinner plates, soup bowls, salad plates, bread plates, napkins, salad forks, dinner forks, knives, soup spoons, butter knives, dessert spoons, water glasses, red wine glasses, and white wine glasses. • Cover the table with a tablecloth or placemat (tablecloth is preferred). • Set a charger at each seat. Place a salad plate and soup bowl in the center of each setting. • Place the bread plate to the left of the charger. Stick the butter knife on the plate with the handle facing right for easy reach. • Place a cloth napkin to the right of charger. • On the left of the charger, place the salad fork and dinner fork, from left to right. • On the right of the charger, place the dinner knife, salad knife, and soup spoon, from left to right. • Place water glass above the knives. Wine is set from right to the left in the order used. White wine is for the first course on the outside, the red wine is next for your entrée. • Stick dessert utensils above the charger — fork handle to the left and spoon handle to the right. • When the main course is served, the charger (a.k.a. server plate) should be traded out for the dinner plate. The Chateau Elan Social Committee hosted our very first vendor fair in January 2019 and it was a huge success and many vendors have asked us to host another one this Fall. If you own a business and would like to participate in the Vendor Fair the cost is $150.00 and all money raised goes toward the budget to sponsor different fun events in the neighborhood. Please contact Karen Tatro at karenftatro@gmail.com or 706-362-3309 to reserve your space or with any questions...Space is limited. The vendor fair is not only an opportunity to meet vendors that may be helpful for you but also a chance to meet and mingle with your neighbors and find out about the clubs or events that are available in the neighborhood.
