Spring is when the Community’s transportation method of choice becomes the golf cart or ATV rather than our cars, trucks, and SUVs. When driving in the Community, please keep these particular items in mind:

• ONLY holders of a valid State driver’s license (a learner’s permit is not valid) will be permitted to operate these unlicensed motor vehicles. • The speed limit throughout the neighborhood is 25 miles per hour. • All passengers must be seated in a seat while the vehicle is in motion. • Use EXTRA caution when driving down hills. • No vehicle may pull a person or persons behind it on any type of device, e.g., skateboard, skates, bicycle, and/ or wagon. • Do not overload your vehicle with more people than the manufacturer’s recommendations, and • After sunset, only vehicles with working headlights, taillights, and brake lights can be on the streets May 2020

For more information and best practices, go to the HPCA website. Look on the dashboard for Documents and click. A dropdown will show a list on which Current Guidelines can be found. Check it out and become familiar with the Guidelines regarding golf carts, off-road vehicles and ATV’s. Remember, too, ALL of these vehicles must be registered with the HPCA through ShaBen and display the sticker on the lower, left portion of the windshield. Don’t get caught without it! During this period of Shelter-in-Place, we all want to get out and about. Parents, please do not allow your non-licensed kids drive these vehicles throughout the Community. Some underaged kids have been reported going through the Community without an adult. While, we all want to get out and about, please do not put your kids, or others, at risk by allowing unauthorized drivers to go through the Community with their buddies. Have fun but be careful and respectful of other carts when parking. Lastly, observe all the traffic rules within the Community. Your Covenants Crew

Clean air, fresh off the printer Forsyth orthodontist designs mask to deal with PPE shortage BY KELLY WHITMIRE kwhitmire@forsythnews.com

At a time when many health care workers are facing a shortage of masks, a Forsyth County orthodontist has worked to develop a stand-in. Mark Causey temporarily closed his business, Causey Orthodontics, off Keith Bridge Road, due to the COVID19 outbreak. After hearing of ways local groups were trying to help provide masks to medical professionals, he worked to develop a mask from a 3D-printed base and a HEPA filter, like those used for shop vacs. “As a dentist, I had materials to be able to seal, like I would a denture or an impression tray, to the face,” Causey said. “So, we were able to have all three components — a seal, a filter and a framework — to help maybe alleviate some of the shortages of PPE.” Though personal protective equipment masks are preferred, Causey said the homemade masks, which are not approved by the FDA or the National Institute of Occupational Health & Safety, are allowed by the CDC when the others run low. Causey said he worked with his lab tech and an engineer from Georgia Tech to come up with the design of the 3D-printed framework. “Together, we developed a 3D mask that could be the framework for a better solution,” Causey said. “People were playing with this before, just kind of as a novelty-type thing, and were printing them, so I was able to get a file, modify it to where the front is kind of like a mason jar, is what I say, to hold the filter.”

Instead of charging for the masks, Causey made them available for download to people with 3D printers. The design has been downloaded more than 6,000 times already. A video showing how to use the masks that Causey posted on Facebook has also been viewed more than 90,000 times. Locally, Causey’s masks have been used by surgeons and other medical workers in Gainesville, and he said masks have also been sent to hospital systems in Chattanooga and Savannah and in “three different surgical settings.” “I’ve had people all over the country sending me pictures of these masks,” Causey said. To ensure a good supply of the frameworks, Specialty Laboratories in Cumming and Dawson and Union County high schools have helped out with the 3D printing. Causey is also working with Mercer University officials, who announced this week they would be printing masks based on his design. “After they got the idea, they put their biomedical engineering team as well as their (3D modeling) teams and engineers in touch with me, so I’ve been working with them as well,” Causey said. Causey said he wanted to use his time away from his business to do something positive. “This is just something that I wanted to do to help out the community and help out maybe shortages, and I had the time on my hands and was able to come up with a solution that hopefully will help,” he said. To download the mask file or find out more information, go to Firedby-Corona.com.

Mia’s “Memorable” Birthday! Even though there was a Shelter-in-Place order in place, Mia had a great “Stay at Home Birthday” thanks to her Mom, Birdie, requesting that the family’s new neighbors, in Harbour Point, do “ horn-honking drive-by’s” to make sure Mia felt special on her 8th birthday. As usual, the wonderful Harbour Point Community came through when there was a need!

Harbour Point

Rides

Dave and Nancy Ebbing have been Harbour Point residents for about eighteen years and where Dave’s love of motorcycles is well known. He has been a bike rider since he first got his driver’s license in high school in Illinois. Biketoberfest, in Daytona Beach, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, have been memorable trips on Dave’s travel list. His 2015 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic, outfitted in full dress, is the way to make those long road trips. His bike carries a B-24 Bomber medallion in recognition of his father’s service in World War II. The 103 cubic inch V-Twin engine effortlessly pushes this ride to any destination in the country. With comfortable space on back for a passenger, who wouldn’t want to take a long ride to the mountains on a warm Fall afternoon? Dave doesn’t limit his interest in rides to his motorcycles. His classic Chris Craft boat and his 1997 stretched Lincoln Town Car limousine are his other favorites. Dave Ebbing and his Harley-Davidson

Sometimes you just have to go in style, no way around it. Maybe you want to take six or seven of your close friends along with you, no problem. How about a nice cocktail for everyone? Of course if you are the designated driver, it’s important that you dress appropriately. Well, Dave has the solution for all those needs. His limo is a beautiful classic. The 1997 classic was the last in the Lincoln Town Car series of this particular model. The conversion was done by Krystal Koach, Inc., in California, noted by its distinctive continuous center side windows. To power all the comfort accessories, the limo has two alternators and two oversized stacked batteries, not to mention a separate air conditioner in the passenger compartment. The Lincoln Town Car limousine has been the limo of choice for use in over 2,700 movies over the years. We all remember the “The Godfather” and “The Sopranos” choice of rides. In New York City, where there are around 25,000 limousines, they are uniquely called “black cars” to distinguish them from the thousands of yellow cabs. It’s also interesting to note that the first stretch limousine was built in 1928 in, of all places, Fort Smith, Arkansas, not too far from Dave’s other lake house on Lake of the Ozarks. We don’t know what’s next on Dave’s list of “must have rides”, but he will certainly have an interesting story to go with it. He’s got some really good Harley stories to tell if you need a conversation starter when you see him. Look forward to other Harbour Point car enthusiast stories…
