Dream Weddings COME TO LIFE WITH JB JAMS
M
ost residents of Gainesville know Judy Bradley and Sue Albright as the “female DJs in town,” but the two are quickly expanding that reputation. Bradley said their business, jB JAMS Entertainment & Events, has evolved into a “full service event company.” “We’re not just DJs anymore,” Albright said. “It’s a comprehensive service.” The company, which is owned by both Albright and Bradley, launched in 1997 after Bradley moved to Northeast Georgia from New York. “I grew up in the ‘70s — in the dis-

co — and I thought music, the DJ, was critical to an event,” Bradley said. “When I moved down here, I had the opportunity to work with another DJ company. He gave me my first start. I worked with this other company for about a year and we parted ways, and this was what I wanted to do.” She said Albright was living in Pennsylvania at the time but helped with marketing for the company. “It was really in that beginning time Sue came for a visit, fell in love with it here and then moved down,” Bradley said. “The two of us didn’t know what we were doing.” The business partners have certainly
learned the trade since their start, though. jB JAMS now offers professional help with event planning, entertainment, lighting, themed decor and more. “We know the quality of what people need,” Albright said. “We can help find their needs and supply whatever they need for their event. If we don’t do it ourselves, we have great vendor partners.” And their work speaks for itself. The coowners recently received multiple awards for their efforts — Best of Hall 2020 for event entertainment and event planning as well as WeddingWire’s Couples Choice Award.
“I think what’s so special about those awards is they’re from our actual customers sharing their experiences,” Bradley said, mentioning the company has won the awards since they were established in 2017 and 2009, respectively. Much like Best of Hall, Albright said the recognition from WeddingWire is based solely on feedback from clients. “It’s based on recommendations and feedback from actual clients, so we don’t have anything to do with submitting those reviews,” she said. “We have a five out of five star rating.” The two said weddings have become a specialty of jB JAMS throughout the years, from local affairs to destination venues. “Most all brides have that dream of what
they want on their wedding day, and it’s our job to hear and take all the wishes of the bride, the groom and the family and then combine it with our experience,” Bradley said. “We tailor every event. If that bride wants to do the wedding backwards, that’s what we’re going to do.” Albright said the company likes to emphasize the role of a DJ is not just about music anymore. “If nobody’s telling the guests what to do, you walk in and you’re uncomfortable,” she said. “Do we sit? Do we stand? Do we eat? Do we drink? Everybody’s looking at each other. We want to create that social atmosphere instead of people just walking in and sitting down, crossing their arms.” Bradley also mentioned the unique ad-
vantage she and Albright bring as women in the business, such as their attention to detail. “Being women-owned when we started was so different, but it gave us such an edge,” she said. “The places that don’t offer any type of day-of facilitation, that’s where a company like ours really has a foot ahead of everybody else because our male comrades in the business, they don’t see that way.” And in addition to weddings, the two put just as much effort toward corporate events and other parties. “A lot of companies we’ve been serving for years, which is great because they keep coming back,” Albright said, mentioning they have planned events for HBO, Kubota and even the PGA Tour. “We’ve done some international grand openings, so the companies flying in their VIPs. We’ve had a couple from Finland, Switzerland and Germany.“ The two said they are always willing to travel, too. “We’ve traveled to Washington State,” Bradley said. “We’ve done events in Philadelphia, Florida, the Carolinas, Tennessee. And of course North Georgia is our home base.” She said she’s especially enjoyed watching their business grow in the local area, including their recent relocation from Oak Street in Gainesville to Clarks Bridge Road near Lake Lanier. “I think we were meant to be here,” she said about the new office. “It gave us a renewed energy. It’s just amazing to be part of this community.” And as for the future, the co-owners said they’re always evolving to stay up-to-date. “We started with nothing — just a love of what we wanted to do — and we’ve evolved,” Bradley said. “We always want to bring something new.” H To learn more about jB JAMS or book an event, visit www.jbjams.com or email events@jbjams.com.

MEADOWS AT MOSSY CREEK: A DREAM COME TRUE BY ELBERTA MCKNIGHT
M
aybe it was meant to be. If some relationships are destined, doesn’t it make sense a person’s calling can be, as well? Such is the case for Karson and Cahla Coker. About five years ago, a friend asked Karson if he would video a wedding he was planning to attend anyway. Karson agreed, and the video made the rounds on Facebook. “People seemed to really like it,” Karson grinned. He did, too. He started filming other weddings and it turned into a full-time job. This, as the couple renovated a century-old home on Main Street in downtown Clermont. It was quaint; charming. The kind of place you might want to have your wedding. When a cousin asked, the Cokers said yes. But when Karson looks back on that very first wedding, it seems like more of a backyard affair than anything that takes place at the venue he and his wife now own in White County called Meadows at Mossy Creek. “It doesn’t matter how pretty the building is or anything is if it doesn’t have the right piece of property,” explained Karson. “When you’re inside our space, the inside and the outside just flow together. You’re never going to lose the view of the mountains or of the meadows.” Meadows at Mossy Creek was a labor of love. The Cokers sold their renovated 100-year-old home and set out to find nature’s most perfect wedding backdrop. They searched for a year, and finally decided on the first piece of property they had looked at.
There were other offers on the real estate, but the seller knew what Karson and Cahla wanted to do with the land and sold them the property to preserve it. Karson, with his brother and dad, crafted buildings that would flow with the property. Single day rentals range from $5,000 to $16,000, depending on the time of the year and the day of the week. Meadows at Mossy Creek also offers a two-to-three night package, which ranges from $20,000 to $50,000 depending on time of year. The venue spans 150 wooded acres in Cleveland and offers indoor and outdoor ceremony options. riginal pine plank floors. Exposed brick walls. Rustic wood rafters and black metal pipes that span a tall, expansive open ceiling with natural light pouring in through turn-of-the-century glass windows that date back to 1922. “We’ve got a lot of brides that are coming out of Atlanta because we have that look of some Atlanta venues, but not the price of the Atlanta venues,” said Allison Dolph, senior event coordinator for Soirées Southern Events, which manages the Chair Factory. For roughly 100 years, the Georgia Chair Factory manufactured furniture on Grove Street. In 2016, the property was sold transformed into a wedding and event venue. “Obviously, all of our brides love the industrial, brick wall look. We have some brides who want to keep it simple with just the exposed brick and then we have some brides who have brought in other vendors to do draping to elevate the space a bit and make it a little softer. Make it more elegant,” Dolph said. The price for the venue starts around $6,000 and includes eight hours the day of the wedding, tables, chairs, linens for up to 300 guests, and two, day-of coordinators to make certain everything runs smoothly. “I really feel like the day-of coordination piece is huge,” offered Dolph. “Most venues do not include that in their pricing. But our feeling is that we want to provide the bride and groom with the best day possible. In order to do that, we really feel like the day-of coordination is essential. Soirées Southern Events also offers an all-inclusive wedding day package which allows the bride to work with just a handful of people on the menu, cake, DJ and flowers, rather than scores of vendors. “Even though it’s a package, it’s still totally customizable to what they want,” said Dolph. “They get to pick their menu, they get to do a tasting with a caterer, as well as the cakes. They get to talk to the DJ about their style and what kind of music they like.” The 8,000-square-foot Chair Factory offers a smaller room,

And really, when you get married local, you have a lot more people usually attending. So you have a bigger wedding.” There’s also parking on-site, and the building is wheelchair accessible. H

Celebrate Weddings
& MORE WITH SCOTT’S DOWNTOWN
W
STORY BY AMBER TYNER
hen preparing for an event, Kay Dixon knows you should always give it a “365 degree look.” “If you’re going to do any event, whether it’s a wedding or class reunion or awards banquet, you have to have that 365 degree look at every aspect,” Kay, catering manager at Scott’s Downtown, said. “You have to look at it from the food, the beverage, the entry point when people come in, where they’re going to leave — every aspect.” And for the last 13 years, Scott’s Downtown has eagerly followed that mantra. The
restaurant has been serving meals and providing catering to the Northeast Georgia area since 2007. “We’re an award-winning restaurant,” said Scott Dixon, owner and executive chef. “Our food and service are hallmarks.” Scott’s Downtown, which is located on the corner of Bradford Street and Brenau Avenue in Gainesville, offers “casual fine dining” throughout the week. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Friday for lunch and Tuesday and through Saturday for dinner. “We like to do some traditional Amer-
ican-type food with ethnic influences, whether those be either Italian or Creole, Cajun or it could be a little bit of anything,” Scott said, mentioning the eatery recently won Best of Hall awards for best fine dining restaurant, best place to celebrate special occasions, best special events venue and more. He said in addition to its regular business hours, Scott’s Downtown has become popular for catering a variety of events throughout the years, including weddings and rehearsal dinners. “We’re available to cater offsite at any of the numerous venues that are around Northeast Georgia, whether they’re private homes or rented lake homes or any of the barns or those type of destination weddings,” Scott said. And when it comes to the menu for those events, brides have an endless selection to meet their needs. “We have all of our standard menu options,” he said. “We’ve also got a very extensive catering menu that features some of the features that we have in the restaurant as well as some different options for appetizers or hors d’oeuvres or buffet-type items. Or we can do something specific or custom. I’ve had somebody bring me their grandmother’s meatball recipe and we did spaghetti and meatballs for a wedding reception that they wanted to do. We’re pretty flexible.” He said Scott’s Downtown can also host a variety of events in-house, both in the restaurant and in its space upstairs known as The Loft. “The Loft is 10,000 square feet in its entirety, and we can configure that space for whatever the guests’ needs are,” Scott said. “We’ve done numerous where we basically cut it in half and we set up a ceremony on one side and then a reception on the other and transition between the two. We can do plated wedding reception dinners, buffets, passed appetizers (or) interactive stations with chef manned sites as well. So really a little bit of everything that someone could want.” He said The Loft can be rented for eight hours at a time on any day of the week. “That’s the standard rental for the loft,” he said about the timeframe. “That gives them time if they need to come in earlier in the day — do any kind of decor or setting up that they want to do — and that in-

cludes their event time and the breakdown time. And of course we can extend those on either end if they need more time. Typically, we have that flexibility to be able to accommodate them.” He said one of the best benefits of choosing Scott’s Downtown is the service Kay provides to the brides. “Kay handles all of our catering and events,” he said. “There’s no better person to work with than her to take care of all of the details of your event. She can take and lead you from start to finish and make it so much easier. One of the things we hear repeatedly for any type of event we do but especially for weddings and rehearsal dinners is that she just made it so easy and so stress free.” Kay said she likes to call the restaurant a “one-stop shop” for brides. “You don’t have to shop for your alcohol services, you don’t have to shop for your caterer, you don’t have to shop for your venue,” she said. “I have referrals for DJs
and musicians, or in-house musicians play a lot for some events upstairs. I work with vendors for the linens. I work with vendors for the florist and the bakeries. And I
help coordinate all that. I don’t mind talking with vendors and scheduling times for them to come in and work with them on getting drop off and set up.” H

HONEYMOON
Emerald Isle EARNS ITS NAME BY PAMELA A. KEENE
No matter if you’re a Republican or a Royalist, the two countries are treasures, not to be missed for world travelers eager to visit the former movie sets of “Game of Thrones” or to visit the sites of old churches, local pubs with characteristic Irish music and dance, or just soak in the scenery. Visitors can enjoy a blend of the outdoors with history and culture in the major cities. Journeying with Overseas Adventure Travel mostly unplugs the politics and brings travelers to the hearts of the people — one-on-one interactions with local fishermen, weavers using centuries-old looms, families making a living at farming or running small multi-generational shops and restaurants. Traversing the coastline northward, the Cliffs of Moher’s rugged coastline provide breathtaking views of the blue Atlantic Ocean. In the spring, the hillsides are splashed with bright yellow gore, similar to Scotch Broom. From June to September, add in the deep lavender pinks of fine heather for a watercolor backdrop against clear-blue skies. As we approached small villages, the roadsides were lined with LEFT: A view of Kylemore Abbey, built in 1868. BELOW: Breathtaking views from the jagged coastline of the emerald isle. Y
ou haven’t seen green until you’ve visited the Emerald Isle. Ireland’s reputation for lush green spectacular scenery is true pretty much all year long but it’s never more evident than in the spring. My recent trip to both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland focused on the coast. We flew into Dublin and took the Dublin Coach across the island to meet our fellow travelers from Overseas Adventure Travel. Our trip leader Tom met us in Ennis, just north of Shannon. The itinerary for the 12 of us included castles, mountain hikes, a trip to a sheep farm and larger cities of Dublin and Belfast. It was an adventure, but it was also a chance to better understand the people of this tiny island torn for decades between Catholics and protestants, battling to retain their independence or bowing to the English crown. From the outside, it looks simple to solve, but with the arrival of Brexit, the future remains to be seen.

rhododendrons in full bloom in the late spring. Considered a weed in Ireland, rhodies are often dug up and discarded or severely pruned to keep them at bay. A boat trip from the Cliffs of Moher to Aran Islands introduced us to the studio of a weaver who used an authentic centuriesold loom to craft wool jackets, scarves, skirts and capes in softly hued fabrics. We took a horse-and-buggy ride around the island before having a traditional lunch of fish-and-chips at a local pub. A visit to a sheep farm north of Clifden showed us the strong bond between the shepherd and the sheep dog. The wolflike dogs are loyal to only one master, who commands the canine through whistles and hoots. One dog can herd dozens of sheep, corralling them across fields and streams or bringing them back to the pens, effortlessly doing his work. We soon crossed the border from The Republic of Ireland into Northern Ireland, where the residents are subject to British rule. When we were there, the border was open, with no checkpoints or formal process to move between the two countries. Our guide, a citizen of the Republic, ex-
pressed concern that when Brexit takes affect, the transit between the Republic and Northern Ireland may become more difficult. A large park filled with giant 20-foot tall aluminum statues of people reaching toward each other and arms raised in celebration marked the passage between the Republic and Northern Ireland. By the way, we used Euros when we were in the Republic, but spent our money in British Pounds in Northern Ireland. Giant’s Causeway on the coast of Northern Ireland attracts tourist from around the world. Known to the Irish as the 8th Wonder of the World, the area along the coast is populated by large hexagonal rocks created more than 6 million years ago by a lava flow. Legend surrounding the natural formations includes a competition between an Irish giant and a Scottish Giant. Local guides and guidebooks provide more details. Northern Ireland’s Belfast is home to Guinness beer, the famed black cabs that toured us around the city, and many murals that tell the varying viewpoints of the two countries’ conflicts. Tom explained that the
murals are the people’s way of preserving history They include images of Americans, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Frederick Douglass. The Titanic Museum details the construction in Belfast of the so-called unsinkable ocean liner, the pride of the city until its collision with an iceberg on its maiden voyage. The Titanic Experience recreates the ship’s elegant interior with interactive galleries and special effects. Our last stop in Northern Ireland brought us to the famed Tree Tunnel, Dark Hedges, featured in the Game of Thrones. Towering trees with twisted trunks and gnarled branches created an eerie mood. The trip ended in Dublin in the Republic, where we learned about the 1916 Easter Rising against the British and resulted in the creation of two countries on the Emerald Isle. Two weeks was not enough to see all that Ireland has to offer, but it’s a good start. And being able to experience both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland provided an excellent overview of why the island is called “The Emerald Isle.” H
