Association Manager’s Corner

The Manager's Message

Dear Homeowners, Spring is in the air, and we have finally received a reprieve from all the rain. The Greenwood Group has explained that since we had such a wet winter that we should expect weeds in our lawns and more Red Ant mounds than usual. Their recommendation for residents is to use both pre- and post-emergent treatments to try to control the weeds in your lawn. For the ants, if you are in the common area and you see an ant mound please email sterlinginfo@ greenwoodgroup.net with the approximate location so we can help keep our parks safe from these insects. With the arrival of Spring many residents install summer flowers in your landscaping beds.If your landscaping beds have an area for perennial flower the following are some suggestions to consider for your beds: Lantana’s, Vincas, Impatience or Begonias. Please remember when replenishing your landscaping beds with mulch please use the approved black and brown mulch or pine straw. Please do not use red mulch or wood chips. If you are planning to paint your home, do any exterior repairs, or landscaping enhancements, please submit a Design Modification request along with the documentation and the $75 modification fee to the Clubhouse lock box, located the right of the Clubhouse front door, for review by the Design Review Committee. The community continues to move forward with plans for the summer. The trail signs have been installed thanks to help from the Lakes and Trails Committee. The Lake 4

Pavilion has been repaired and painted, and gutters have been added to help with erosion control. The committee is looking at additional enhancements for this venue in 2021. Twelve Crepe Myrtles have been added to the island, and the Clubhouse Trail is scheduled to be re-paved in May. The Sterling on the Lake Board of Directors are happy to announce that the Transition Committee has been established and will begin their meetings in May. The members are as follows: Charlie Jemo, Jean Marie Ellis, Erin Mundy, David Benson, Shawn Lesko, David Welch, and Joe Lanford. We look forward to working with these residents as we move towards the Resident managed community. The Board has also established a Landscaping Committee to work the me and the Board to plan landscaping within the community. The committee will be involved with the landscaping enhancements of the common areas and overseeing the Landscaping company. If you are interested in joining this committee, please contact Tammy Quinn my email is tquinn@cmacommunities.com. The Board, my staff, and I would like to thank the Community for your continued help and cooperation during the COVID 19 outbreak within our state. If you have any questions, please email me at tquinn@cmacommunities.com. Regards,

A TEACHER'S TALE:

Shanon Lutz's Story Students and teachers lives changed overnight with the onset of COVID-19. Shanon Lutz, Sterling resident and secondgrade teacher at Ivy Creek Elementary with 26 years teaching experience, was called in for a staff meeting on Thursday, March 12th, where they were told to take home their computers and some essential materials in case of the need for a couple digital learning days. The school was already going to be out that Friday for a makeup snow day, but little did they know they were going to be out for the rest of the school year. That Sunday, after learning that school was going to be out for more than a couple of days, several of the secondgrade teachers got together and began making videos for their kiddos. If a teacher specialized in a subject, he/she would create a video teaching a lesson on that subject and share it with their colleagues. Teachers had to quickly readjust their curriculum, which meant focusing on math, reading, and writing. Many teachers are trying to teach those subjects through science and social studies but keeping their focus on the core subjects.

Lutz shared some of her biggest challenges. • NO busy work! It is easy to give them worksheets or videos to watch, but we need to make sure the kiddos are completing projects and work that will keep them moving forward. • Another challenge is making sure the kids are not spending the whole school time on the computer. In most households there are two or more kids that all need to share a computer for their schoolwork. Teachers have to give some instruction on the computer then have an assignment that does not require them to be on the computer. • Lutz is using digital learning although she admits to not being tech savvy. Lutz is learning a new online program, where kids can turn in their work and get graded, and where she can video with them without the program causing glitches. • Since families are not all on the same time frame, Mrs. Lutz is always on. Parents are reaching out to their kid’s teachers all day now because everyone’s schedules are so different. Instead of having a normal 8-4 school day Lutz is now having almost 12-hour days. There have been some positives to come from all this. • She feels like she has really gotten to know her class because when they zoom the kids are showing everyone where they live. They are meeting siblings and pets. • Parents are now more involved and invested in their child’s education. Parents are also getting creative with how they are teaching their kids. • Many parents are showing their gratitude by reaching out to Shanon thanking her for teaching their child every day. • Teacher parades! Shanon has loved driving around different communities to see her kids. Many kids come outside with posters made cheering on the teachers. She said it is also fun to see kids she used to teach and seeing how much they’ve grown. Sterling on the Lake wants to thank all the teachers for their dedication and hard work during this time. You have been given an impossible task and are making it work for the kids!

Carly Preston's Story: FROM THE FRONTLINE

Carly Preston is a Registered Nurse with Northeast Georgia Health System. On March 30th, two weeks into the COVID-19 pandemic, Carly felt God tugging at her heart to serve in a bigger way. “God has tugged at my heart through this pandemic. I’ve been wanting to care for these sick patients. I’ve been hoping to help lighten the load of nurses who are being crushed under the weight of the workload. I knew as a high schooler that I wanted to change lives and serve and leave an impact, well God certainly delivers on His purpose for me…I will be flying to New York to work for six weeks.” Carly made the decision to be a travel nurse in the ICU, which means traveling to New York, the heart of the pandemic, with little supplies to keep her safe, and a state with no friends or family for comfort. Here is Carly’s story of day one… “Day One: Surreal. A day in the life of a nurse working in a HOT COVID-19 unit. First day. A quick orientation will suffice. Review all the necessary skills of an RN, sign a hundred forms and get shuffled into a group of other agency nurses. At least we have each other. Go have a quick 30-minute lunch, find your way to the ID office in a 1500 bed hospital. Scarf lunch. Follow another agency nurse because he looks like he knows where to go. Get told you’re reporting to CCU after your badge prints. Sprint to the bathroom because once you gear up, it’s over. Turn your backpack around on the way up. Start putting on your scrub cap, N-95, shoe covers. All the other nurses stare but you don’t care what they think because you have to protect yourself. Walk into THE COVID-19 ICU. The hottest place in the hospital in terms of virulence. A knot ties its way into your gut and pray to God you can remember your spatial awareness. It’s eerie. Every door is closed. All IV pumps have been rigged with extension tubing so the critical drips remain outside the room. Alarms are blaring everywhere. No one seems to rush to them. This is normal. Patients desaturating everywhere.Youngest is 35. Oldest is 65. All of them intubated and sedated. All of them infected. Nurses are yelling, crying, arguing, but ultimately working together to weather the storm.Your group is told seven patients will be moved to a new makeshift ICU and we are going to help. They ask the group who wants to go first, and your hand immediately shoots up. What the hell am I thinking? Oh well, good for you honestly, you came to work, not gawk at the surroundings. You are ushered to a room, backpack still on. Told you will take this patient and open the new unit, five floors above. “Yes ma’am.” You look around and see a Gambro CRRT machine and your heart soars.Your favorite machine. You tell the leader in front of you that you are experienced with this CRRT machine and she yells with joy. “HEY! Guys, I’ve got another CRRT nurse here, these nurses are legit! Thank you for coming sweetie, you don’t know how happy we are to have you.” Tears burn behind your eyes. But nope, you don’t have time for tears. 26

You look around. You see a blue gown in a package and claim it. You put it on along with two pairs of gloves. You Find a clean surgical mask, claim it too so you can protect your precious N-95.You see a stack of face shields, get one before you can’t find another. You find a box of bouffant caps to add another layer of protection to your head. You feel somewhat prepared. But can’t decide if you can smell the sick unit through your mask. Brush it off, you’re okay. Don’t touch anything.Yet. You see the Braun IV pumps that you have extremely minimal experience with and feel a sense of disappointment. You grab the nurse at the room you are assigned to move and ask him to help you learn these pumps. He is uncommonly kind. He thanks you immensely for coming to help. He is eager to help you learn. He teaches you how to program the pumps and you try to remember every move he makes. You have to learn this now. You can’t ask for help on this again. You have to learn it now. You’ve moved your patient up to the new ICU.You can’t help but think you just smeared the halls and elevator with COVID. No wonder this this isn’t going away. You roll into a makeshift ICU. There are monitors and oxygen and suction. Basics. Thank you, God. There are some supplies. There are no linens. There is a Pyxis, but you don’t have access. Shit. Your ICU brain kicks into gear. Do what you do best. Do what you know.Your heart rate is good.Your NI blood pressure is good, but that A-line isn’t working. Troubleshoot. There it is, perfect.Your oxygen is fantastic. 97%.You look at your vent. 60% FiO2 and 11 PEEP. Well shit. Okay at least my sat is good. Temperature? No temperature cable. No thermometer. You have to figure that one out. These patients are hot and HOT.Your patient is fine.Your patient is heavily sedated. Shed your first pair of gloves. Forget how you shamed other people for applying hand sanitizer to their gloves because you’re one of them now. Don’t you dare take off that first pair. Don’t you dare expose your hands. It’s two hours in and you are keenly aware of the inability to catch your breath. It’s hot and muffled. You are wondering if it’s just the mask or you actually already got infected. But seriously you can’t breathe.Your plastic blue gown is sticking to any skin it can find and you’ve got beads of sweat running down every inch of your body. You’re wondering why it’s so damn loud in here and realize it’s the system creating a negative pressure environment for you.You hope. You finally get a thermometer. One. For an 11-bed makeshift ICU. Okay we’ll make it work.Your patient’s temp is 99.6. Not bad honestly. You suddenly realize you’re left with two vented patients. Alone. Everyone either went to transport another patient or ran to grab a bite to eat while they had five minutes. Alone. You know nothing about this hospital. You have no numbers to call. No resources. Okay God, can you please just keep these two friends of mine in line until I get more help? People.Yes, thank God. It’s only been 30 minutes, but it felt like forever. It’s hot as hell.Your patient is surprisingly doing great. Next door, she’s struggling. You go help and hunt down supplies that she needs. You realize your patient doesn’t need much but these other patients do. These other nurses are struggling. You run, you help, you troubleshoot, you fight for supplies, you get creative, you start inventing things. Hours pass. You can do this. You can help. You are a great resource. These other nurses are fantastic. You are learning so much. We are working together. Team nursing. We are fighting together. We share a few laughs along the way. It’s okay. The most significant thing is the film that has formed in your mouth making it hard to talk. More patients roll in. The unit keeps getting hotter

and HOTTER.You start to panic slightly. It’s gotten harder to breathe; you have a rash on your chin, but you better not touch it. Don’t you dare.Your scrubs are soaked completely, and you realize you didn’t bring a change of clothes. Idiot. You check your patient’s temperature and its 98.8. Oh my gosh, he’s afebrile. I didn’t do much but shit if that’s the only thing I did, that’s okay. Maybe he’s fighting. The night shift nurse walks in and you feel like crying, or hugging her, or both. But you do neither. You realize you never got a report and you know nothing about this patient in your bed.You only know his access, his drips, his vent settings, his UOP, and that’s pretty much it.You apologize for your lack of knowledge about the patient but there wasn’t anything in the chart either. It’s sad really. You look at your patient and think of what a shitty job you did.You didn’t do mouth care, you didn’t turn, you didn’t find him a clean gown. Stop. You kept. him. alive. Heart rate 61. Blood pressure 122/63. Sat 100%. Temp 98.8. Pulse and a pressure and a pleth. He’s alive. And so are the other five patients on the hand-me-down ICU. We did a damn good job. You have to know that’s enough. You have to. No deaths=great day. Exhaustion hits. You find a pair of paper scrubs to change in to.You sanitize literally everything. Except your skin, even though you wish you could. You fight the urge to rip off your N-95 because you can’t form words with your cakey mouth anymore. You didn’t stop for water, it’s too dangerous to risk exposure. You realize the paper scrubs are see through, but you couldn’t care less. Let everyone see your coral underwear. You place your valuable face shield and N-95 in a paper bag.You carefully place your HOT scrubs into a separate paper bag.You planned on biking home, but you just can’t muster up the strength. You walk out onto the streets of New York and slide into the first cab.You don’t care how much it costs; you just want to be home.

You wipe the cab’s door handles, tip him extra and carefully make your way up to the 6th floor. You sanitize your badge, your phone, your shoes. You carefully peel off the see-through paper scrubs and place them in a trash bag.You spray Lysol everywhere. You start your laundry and make it hot.You make it to the shower and as much as you want to drink the bottle of water you have waiting for you. Don’t. Don’t risk it.You clean in with a wet wipe and bring it in the shower with you.You look at your face in the mirror and see the impression your N-95 mask has made; you wonder when you’ll start getting skin breakdown. You wash your face twice. Nothing you do rids your mouth of the film that has formed. You decide you can’t take it any longer and you chug every ounce of water and then wish you had brought three more in with you.You wash your hair twice. You scrub your skin twice. You wash your face again because you just don’t feel clean. You put on your favorite lounge pants and sweatshirt and make your way to the kitchen for food. You scarf down half a container of watermelon because it’s cold. You make a bowl of cereal because it’s easy You eat on the terrace because there’s fresh air out there. Tons of it.You don’t care how cold it is, you’re sitting out there as long as possible. Maybe you can even sleep out there. The sounds of New York are growing on you.You recount the day and realize they never told you when to come back. But you already know when you’ll return. It’s hell, but it’s desperate and they need you. So, rest up nurse, 40 more days.”

We cannot thank our healthcare providers enough for their everyday sacrifice. From all of us here at Sterling on the Lake…

Thank you!
