Gurbux Singh Saini was born in a small rural village of Bhungarni and grew up in the city of Jalandhar, Punjab in an extended family household which included his middle-class parents and three uncles. His father owned a sweet shop, working countless hours to provide for the family. His example of hard work motivated Gurbux to pursue his own ambitions,

GURBUX SINGH SAINI

one of which was to come to Canada.

In 1972, his wife Mohinder, fourmonth-old son, Kulwinder, and Gurbux himself arrived in Canada as immigrants with just $8 dollars. They settled in Williams Lake, and he shortly landed his first job at West Fraser Timber. As his family went on to include two more children, Michael

and Paul, he took on additional jobs, ultimately joining Jacobson Bros. where he eventually became the Plant Manager. Throughout, he continued to upgrade his skills and education, obtaining a lumber grading ticket and completing courses at University of Western Ontario in Production and Operations Management and employment law at the University of British

Columbia.

Seven years after arriving in Canada, Gurbux was elected as a city councillor of Williams Lake and served in that role for 14 years. Additionally, He served as president of the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple, president of the local federal Liberal association, and president of the Central Cariboo Multicultural Association. He was proud to be instrumental in building a much-needed crematorium in Williams Lake. In recognition of his community service, he was a nominee for the Citizen of the Year award. He also served on the Liquor Appeals Board, Commercial Appeals Com-

mission and the Travel Assurance Board.

In 1984, Gurbux and his wife purchased Savalas Steak House which they operated for 8 years. They then purchased WL Forestry Supplies, expanding the business to include selling NAPA auto parts with additional locations in Quesnel and Surrey. Their business interests now include commercial real estate holdings across Canada and Florida.

In 2016, Gurbux moved to Surrey and made it his mission to advocate for improvements for the residents of Surrey.

He spearheaded the creation of washroom facilities at Chimney Heights Park and building picnic tables and lock boxes in various parks throughout the area. Currently, He is spearheading a petition to build a multi-purpose room and walking track at Chimney Heights Park. For the past four years, he has served as President of the Fleetwood-Port Kells federal Liberal Association and was one of the team leaders in getting current MP, Ken Hardie, re-elected for the last two federal elections.

Gurbux says, “I believe in the openness and multiculturalism of our country where we can celebrate our diversity

and be proud Canadians at the same time. During the 1995 Quebec referendum, Kulwinder and I flew to Montreal to take part in the pro-Canada rally. I was honoured to have recently been awarded the Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee award for my service to the community.

I am grateful for the opportunities that Canada has provided to me and my family and believe if we put in effort and due diligence then we can all achieve our hopes and dreams.”

LINDA ANNIS Councillor, City of Surrey

Tell us about your journey as a City Councilor.

I was always interested in politics, but never really thought of myself as ever running for office. But in the 2018 election I was approached by Surrey First and I liked what Surrey First mayors Dianne Watts and Linda Hepner had done for our city, so I said yes to running for council. I was a complete newbie and had to learn a lot very quickly, but I’ve enjoyed every minute of. I was re-elected in October last year, and I’m feeling like I have a real understanding of our city, and what people in Surrey want from city hall. It has also been a wonderful way to get to know more about our community. Being a city councilor has been a tremendous honor. I have a real understanding of how diverse we are in Surrey, and that we have so many wonderful opportunities in front of us.

What are your achievements till now?

I hope what people see in me is someone who wants to bring people together, someone who has some common sense, and someone who wants to put our city first, and politics second. That approach has always been part of Surrey First, and both Dianne Watts and Linda Hepner made it clear from the start of Surrey First that everyone on council should park their politics at the door and always put Surrey first. I’ve tried to follow that approach and I hope that’s what people see.

I’ve also tried to push for more transparency and accountability at city hall. Our city budget is over $1.3 billion each year, and those tax dollars are precious. So, I want taxpayers to know how their money is being spent,

and transparent when it comes to value for money, and spending on the right priorities.

I also push for more community engagement with city hall and city council. I want our residents and taxpayers to feel like their city hall is on their side. Too often I feel like big decisions are made behind closed doors, and that’s not the way we should be running our city. All of us on council work for our taxpayers, and they have a right to know what’s going on and they have a right to be consulted on big decisions.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years and 10 years?

Ten years is certainly a long time in politics, but I hope I’m still involved and still engaged with our community. I’m enjoying being a councilor, it’s like having a second full-time job, in addition to my work as executive director of Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers. But I believe the work is important and it’s a real honor to go to city hall every day and know you are representing the people of our city.

What have you learned from this career?

The biggest thing I’ve learned as a councilor is to listen more and talk less. It’s amazing how much you learn when you actually listen to people. City hall has no monopoly on good ideas, so when people in Surrey want to talk to me, I try to talk less and listen more. The other thing I see every day is the fact that as residents we have a lot in common with one another. Sure, there are some differences, but overall we all want the same thing safe streets, affordable housing, good schools, plenty

of parks and pools and rinks, more transit, and a local economy where we can work closer to home with less commuting. So if we can focus on the things we have in common, and pay less attention to our differences, we can do a lot in our city.

What are thoughts on the future of the city?

We’re growing so quickly in Surrey, with over 1,000 new residents every month. That means we need to think long term. I don’t think we do enough of that. That’s why we’re short on housing, particularly rental and affordable housing, it’s why we don’t have enough schools, and why we need more rinks, pools, and playing fields. At city council we have to think 10 and 20 years ahead. Too often we’re only dealing with the “here and now,” but we need to do a better job of deciding how we want our city to look and feel for the next generation. Mayor Linda Hepner used to talk about our city never being afraid of big ideas, and she was absolutely right. Our city’s potential is really unlimited. We have the people, the talent, the land, and the connections to make Surrey an even better city, but it starts by uniting as a city and putting Surrey first.

NAVEED WARAICH

A leader in the making

Naveed Waraich, the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal recipient, is dedicated to serve the community. He has an extensive experience of working with the community and he understands the needs and issues the community is facing. He desires to serve the people and has chosen to join politics, so that he can get the opportunity to represent the community at the decision-making level.

Here’s Naveed Waraich talking about his journey in Canada and his ambitions.

“I immigrated to Canada from Pakistan in 1992. I admire this country’s diversity, multiculturalism, and acceptance of many ethnicities. I am so grateful to be able to reunite my family here, and being the parent of four kids, I had the opportunity to be part of the sociocultural system in Canada. The way Canada welcomes all cul-

tures and ethnicities warm heartedly, fosters a strong sense of familial and communal relationships.

Through my experiences and personal struggles in this culture, I have gained a tremendous deal of understanding and perspective towards the significance of a community. I started volunteering in 2002 and shortly after took on leadership roles in a number of community organizations and helping others became my passion. I believe that our community was desperately in need of guidance and leadership to properly integrate into society while maintaining our unique cultural identity. With the help of my dedicated crew I was able to effectively organize high-budget community events that brought together many communities and encouraged harmony and understanding.

Unfortunately, a number of problems,

such as Islamophobia, hate speech, and unfair branding, arose in our community following September 11th. With the assistance of other community members and other organizations, I persistently worked to overcome these challenges and eradicate harmful biases. Because of my extensive expertise and dedication, I was even given the chance to join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s national advisory council, where I provided insights and recommendations for local solutions.

The Times of Canada | July 2023 Edition 22

My dedication to community work has been recognised and honoured on various levels, so my efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal was one of the numerous awards I’ve received, and the Governor General of Canada presented it to me in honour of my excellent contributions to the growth of our neighbourhood.

enhancing national security will help create a safe and secure atmosphere for the local population.

My ultimate objective as a dedicated community member is to continue making major contributions to the neighborhood’s improvement. I have a tremendous desire to serve people, and I want to get more involved in politics so that I may have a say in how the town spends its money and

Since I’ve been a resident of Surrey for almost three decades, I am fully aware of the issues and challenges the community encounters. It would be an honour for me to advocate for the neighbourhood and contribute to finding long-term fixes. The Conservative Party nomination is my ultimate ambition in order to serve my neighbourhood and bring about change. Furthermore, I believe that the Conservative Party of Canada’s policies are a fantastic way to stimulate the local economy because they support small businesses and entrepreneurship. Furthermore, their perspectives on crime reduction and

I believe that my interest in the region would be well-served by the Conservative Party of Canada’s commitment to local prosperity and development. I am so grateful for the community’s support and inspiration. Their steadfast encouragement has given me motivation and inspiration, which has helped me realize and pursue my goals.

You have my word that I won’t let you down and I’ll do all in my power to keep your trust in me. With your continued assistance, I’m confident I can accomplish my passion to serve our community and maintain its strength. I want to thank you again for believing in me.”

THE SURREY REAL ESTATE MARKET

The real estate market in Surrey, British Columbia, is a topic of great interest for potential homebuyers, sellers, and investors. As one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada, Surrey offers a blend of urban amenities, a diverse population of immigrants, and natural beauty. Let us look into the current state of the real estate market in Surrey and provide insights into the factors shaping it.

Booming Population

Surrey has experienced remarkable population growth over the past decade, making it the second-largest city in British Columbia after Vancouver. This population surge has been driven by a combination of factors, including affordable housing options, a vibrant local economy, and improved transportation infrastructure. As a result, Surrey has become a sought-after destination for families, professionals,

and investors alike.

Economy

The city’s economy is thriving, with a diverse range of industries contributing to its growth. Surrey is a major hub for technology, health care, manufacturing, and education. The presence of Simon Fraser University and Kwantlen Polytechnic University has also helped attract a skilled workforce and foster innovation. A

lot of employment opportunities have be created in construction industry as well.

choose from established communities or explore newer developments, each with its unique appeal.

Affordability and Investment Opportunities

Market Trend in recent years

The real estate market in Surrey has seen significant appreciation in property values over the past few years. However, there has been a slight cooling off in the market recently, reflecting a more balanced approach between buyers and sellers. The COVID-19 pandemic and government regulations have played a role in this shift.

Despite the moderation, Surrey’s housing market remains competitive, particularly in desirable neighborhoods. Detached homes, townhouses, and condos continue to be in high demand,

One of Surrey’s key advantages over neighboring cities like Vancouver is its relatively affordable housing market. Buyers seeking more space for their money often turn to Surrey, where they can find larger homes and spacious lots at a more reasonable price. This affordability has made the city particularly attractive to first-time buyers and young families.

Investment opportunities abound in Surrey as well. With ongoing development projects, improved infrastructure, and a growing population, the city offers the potential for long-term appreciation. Investors can explore both residential and commercial properties, as Surrey continues to attract businesses and entrepreneurs looking for new opportunities.

ments have recognized the importance of managing the real estate market to ensure affordability and sustainable growth. In recent years, various measures have been implemented to address housing affordability, such as foreign buyer taxes, vacancy taxes, and stricter mortgage lending rules.

Future Prospects

Looking ahead, the future of Surrey’s real estate market appears promising. The city’s long-term plans include investing in transportation infrastructure, expanding recreational facilities, and promoting sustainable development. These initiatives aim to further enhance the quality of life in Surrey and attract more residents and businesses to the area.

The current real estate market in Surrey, BC, is a dynamic landscape driven by population growth, economic opportunities, and affordability. The city’s vibrant economy, coupled with its diverse housing options, makes it an attractive destination for homebuyers and investors alike. As Surrey continues to evolve, it remains crucial for buyers, sellers, and investors to stay informed about market trends and work with knowledgeable professionals to make informed decisions in this exciting real estate market.

Love Beyond Borders

The Wedding Story of Sharman Sidhu & Taniya Sharma

Like they say, A marriage is a beautiful union of two souls and there are many ups and downs. The ones who are willing to give their all for their partner end up in a beautiful and long lasting marriage. Meeting individuals from around the world is simpler than ever in today’s connected society. Either through a familial introduction or through casual social media connections.

This is exactly what occurred with Taniya, an Indian woman, and Sharman, a Canadian male. Despite being separated by thousands of miles, they fell in love right away after meeting online.

The Times of Canada | April 2023 Edition

In an effort to keep Sharman and Taniya together for the rest of their lives, Sharman’s mother introduced the two of them. It for sure was love at first sight for Sharman, the moment he saw her he knew she was the one. Short introductions and awkward text discussions marked the beginning of their long-distance relationship. But as they got to know one another better, they both discovered that relationships may be created simply by interacting with one another on a daily basis. Gradually getting to know each other better, they were ready to move forward in their relationship.

Sharman secretly travelled to India with his mother in order to surprise Taniya after months of planning and saving. Planned by Sharman they two run into each other for the first time, while casually strolling through a neighbourhood mall. They prepared for one of the biggest days of their life throughout the course of the following several months.

Being from different religions and beliefs, Taniya is a Hindu, whereas Sharman is a Sikh, which makes their union even more meaningful and pure. Their love is an example of true commitment and unconditional love that is not bound by stereotypical social beliefs. With the help of extremely supportive families they were able to ignore the negativity people still send their way. The wedding was a beautiful blend of traditional Sikh faith and a traditional Hindu wedding, all on the same day. Their dedication to one another and their affection for one another were beautifully celebrated. Sharman’s mother, however, became unwell following the wedding. Admitted into a hospital and had undergone surgery.

Sharman and his mother had to leave India since Sharman’s mother was unable to receive the proper medical care there. Leaving Taniya behind and postponing their honeymoon to

Malaysia.

Taniya and Sharman are still dedicated to one another despite their separation. Every day, they make an effort to communicate, sharing both their successes and their setbacks. They encourage one another through difficult times and share in each other’s victories. Although the distance is difficult, they managed to make it work. In order for the two to begin their married life together, Sharman is now waiting for the day he gets to meet the love of his life again by overcoming whatever life throws at them.

There are still couples like Sharman and Taniya who are in love with each other totally and selflessly, so those who have lost faith in love or are at least finding it should give life another chance.

Empowering Minds, Breaking Barriers

In today’s fast-paced world, where stress, anxiety, and depression have become all too common, it is crucial to prioritize mental health. OUR TONGUE Mirror of our Body

Ayurveda – An ancient science has drawn a wonderful picture of human body. Our body speaks about our body problems. But we must understand it. Today I am talking about our tongue. Our tongue is not just an organ of taste, it’s a tool of diagnosis. Along with pulse, nail, skin and face analysis tongue diagnosis is an ancient proven process to do health check of human body.

Tongue is called a mirror of our inner system. Our tongue never lies and clearly indicates if your body is accumulating toxins, food is indigested or any indication of disorders. Vata dosha condition can normally observe at the back of the tongue associated with the state of the colon. Pitta dosha condition can observe in the middle portion of the tongue associated with the stomach and small Intestines. The sides of the tongue relate to the liver and many pitta imbalances can see here. Kapha dosha condition can observe in the front portion associated

with the lungs, chest and heart.

Tongue helps to diagnose how harmonized the dosha is or whether it is out of balance. Divide the tongue into three parts (33.3% each); the inner part near throat is vata, middle is pitta, and the outer tip is kapha. Ex-

cessive tongue coating in any of these specific areas shows imbalance of that dosha. Tongue should be pink in color and not pale or red. This color should be universal throughout your tongue. This means that your entire tongue should be of one color on a whole. Our tongue consists of small cylindrical bodies called the taste buds. These taste buds situated on your tongue must be easily visible. Tongue should neither be very dry nor too wet. There shall not be any cracks in it. It should be smooth and must possess a very thin coat of mucus lining it. It is normal and a must.

If you see a Whitish coating, that is a sign of ama, which means there are toxins in the digestive system. We can get ama for a number of reasons, but mainly because we have weak agni. Agni is our digestive fire and there is plenty that we can do during our daily routine to keep agni strong. Think about doing a detox but couldn’t think of a strong enough incentive. In this case your colon is full of material that

The Times of Canada | July 2023 Edition 36

doesn’t belong there, that spreads toxins into your blood, makes you sluggish, your skin greyish and your head foggy might be the push you were waiting for. Take a break from heavy, oily and processed foods.

Beside whitish tongue Redness indicates that there is too much heat in the body. This redness suggests that digestion might be TOO hot, therefore burning the food before it gets absorbed to become nutrients.

Cracks on the tongue, means a vata derangement. This could be due to dehydration or not enough oils in the diet.

Trembling tongue – a sign of anxiety or fear, possible Vata disturbance. We live in such a high stress society that anxiety can crawl over you without you even being aware of it. It might even be your permanent state and you are so used to it that can’t tell the difference. Forgot when was the last time you woke up rested and excited to start your day? Take a break from caffeine and nourish your nervous system with warm, easy to digest light soups and bean dishes.

ough examination. It is very common to see red dots on the surface of your tongue, which represents the heat or Pitta energy in the plasma and blood tissues. The density of red papillae may vary and correlates to the respective organ locations. The condition like high fever, hyper acidity, ulcers, and acidic reaction may cause red inflamed papillae on the top of the tongue.

Basically, tongue is a muscular, vascular organ. The normal color of the tongue is red-pinkish. If the tongue is pale in color, it is a typical sign of low red blood cells, poor circulation or possibly anemia. This may happen due to low hemoglobin, excessive blood loss, Iron/B12 deficiency, parasitic infection, or side effects of some drugs. Looking into the heart area of the tongue, if you find hollowness or scooping, it is an indicator of emotional imbalance like sadness, grief, or depression in the heart. This may stay longer and remain chronically, which can be known by the depth and prominence of the marks.

The information provided here is for awareness purpose only. Please check up with your doctor or Health Provider about any problem in the body. Thanks, have a healthy life.

Teeth marks on the side is a sign of ama in the colon and/or unabsorbed nutrients. Teeth imprints around the contour of the tongue shows malabsorption of nutrients. It means digestive system is not very happy.

If the coating is grey, black or brown, you can assume accumulation of Vata toxins and vata imbalance. If the coating is yellow, orange, red, green, it indicates Pitta toxins and pitta Imbalances. If the coating is whitish in color, it is Kapha toxins and correlates to Kapha imbalance. If there is swelling on a tongue is the indicator of inflammation in the body. The location of swelling may vary and correlate to the inflammation of organ on that area. This can also reveal a Kapha imbalance such as fluid retention, allergic reaction, obesity, hypothyroidism etc.

Swollen tongue may need more investigation and thor-

Yogic Sciences and Your Health

Month of June is designated as Yoga month and June 21 is designated as international Day of Yoga. I salute efforts of India in promotion of Yoga practice to all. I am a medical practioner of western allopathic system. I was trained in research obtaining Doctor of philosophy and followed this with a doctor of medicine. All done in Canada.

After my training I practiced full time as consultant on Biochemical medicine and leadership role in organ sing comprehensive regional laboratory medicine for 40 years. I share this as a backdrop of my perspective how fusion of best of east (yogic integrative science) and best of west (physical reductive medical science) can benefit us all and strengthen our cherished current health care.

Based on my training and long years of practice, I say allopathic medicine is one of the best for acute specific disease. It has developed much deeper knowledge and understanding based on reductive understanding of matter and principles of quantitative mathematical analysis; quantum physics, metabolic biochemistry, molecular biology and evidence

based experimental knowledge. Our understanding of physical body and pathophysiology of disease is comprehensive. External interventions of surgery, physical manipulations and exogenous synthetic drugs provides rapid relief and sometime cure from many diseases. However, while we have come long way in our understanding of physical body, it has also led to very narrow and reductive approach to health and disease. Ever increasing interventions, and technology has created need for sub specialization and by ability of the practioner to limit their approach to very narrow area of their expertise. This is where I see a GAP and real need for us to incorporate fusion of East and West.

Yogic science is based on ancient, very ancient understanding of human body and deep understanding of person as whole. Yogic science places individual is part of nature (Prakariti) and its 5 elements (Air, space, water, Fire, and earth). It integrated these to physical body and build qualities (Gunas) of matter as Satvik, Rajvisk and Tamsik and classify individual on the mix of elements and Dosha (Vata, Pita and Kapha). It classifies person as a whole on these Gunas and Doshas in a

very comprehensive way. The knowledge is based on integrative thinking of the system as whole and is based on long years of observation and analysis. The person is always part of the whole universe and disease is as much paly of balance as it is specific interactions.

Thus we have 2 very well developed knowledge bases, which complement each other and fill the GAP which may exist, if one is totally focused on one way of thinking. Thus best of west based on science of experiment and best of east based on science of observation, can provide comprehensive solutions. While western medicine is very applicable for acute episodic external interventional care, yogic medicine is for sustainable chronic health promotion, illness prevention and internal interventions.

Both systems provide huge list of interventions. In this context practice of Yoga is much broader then popular notion of it being physical exercise of Aasans. Yogic science draws its fusion of 5 elements to the individual, creation of Physical Body. Physical body is composite of 5 senses (touch smell, sounds, sight and, taste), 5 action

The Times of Canada | July 2023 Edition 40

organs (feet, hands, reproduction, voice, excretion) and 5 observational organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin). This is where yogic science takes a deeper dive into linking physical external body to pranic, manqa and veganic internal (astral) and finally to bliss (casual body). These principles are fundamental to interventions prescribed.

Thus yogic practice of Raj Yog is all based on internal interventions. The code was prescribed by Rishi Patanjili and includes 8 limbs of Yam (rules to live by, how you relate to others, Niyam (rules to practice and how you relates to yourself). Both establishes behavior Gunas and form basis of lifestyle. Other 2 limbs incorporate physical movement, stretching as Aasans and Breathing as Pranayam. These 2 allows interactions between physical body (Annamya) to Astra Body (Pranayama, Manamaya and Vigyanmaya Kosha). So these 4 are key to yoga practice. He further expands on control of senses Pratyahar (withdrawing and controlling senses) and calming of mind through Dhayan, Dharana nd Samadhi. Practice of yoga science impacts all 2 Koshas and provides through Prana, Mind and Intellect (Budhi) tools for balance and behavior which helps us for healthy living all call for self-internal interventions. One of the challenge is time and extensive practice all these interventions requires for outcome, whereas external interventions are quick and rapid. We need both.

This is a very brief narrative of possible Yoga science and healthy living in modern context. Hope you incorporated power of mind and its role in health by using 8 limbs of Yogic Practice, while following advice of health practioner for in treatment. One is not a replacement of other.

Every industry follows some kind of rules and regulations which help the industry to work efficiently and in a safe manner. Trucking industry also runs on some rules and everybody working in this industry must follow those rules. These rules have been set by the governments of Canada and USA.

Due to trade business between Canada and the USA, these rules are somewhat similar. Companies running their commercial trucks Canada wide only have to follow Canadian rules and regulations. Companies whose commercial trucks are running in Canada and USA, must follow the

HOURS OF SERVICE

rules of both countries.

You must be thinking how it is possible to follow both rules at the same time. Let me explain to you. When your commercial trucks are running in Canada, your drivers must follow Canadian rules and set their electronic device’s rule set to Canadian Hour of Service cycle-1 or cycle-2. As soon as the commercial truck crosses the border of the USA, your driver must switch its electronic device’s rule set to USA Hours of Service cycle-1 or cycle-2. The commercial truck drivers must follow the same rule when they come back to Canada from the USA.

Usually we see that drivers do not change their duty cycle also known as Hours of Service cycle when they cross the USA or Canadian border. They drive their trip using either the Canadian cycle or USA cycle. This is a huge violation to the drivers. The CVSE (Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement) can give them a warning or a ticket when they catch drivers using wrong hours of

service cycle. This mistake will also be caught during an audit which can be done by Canadian authorities or USA authorities.

It is always the best option to follow the rules which have been set by our Governments for our own safety. Violating these rules to save a little bit of your time and money can cause these trucking companies, the commercial truck driver or someone else a huge harm either financially or physically.

CANADA LAUNCHES NEW PROCESS TO WELCOME SKILLED NEWCOMERS

With employers eagerly seeking to fill countless vacant positions across the country, immigration emerges as a vital piece to solving this puzzle. Recognizing this reality, the Government of Canada is building an immigration system that acts as a catalyst for growth, empowering businesses, helping address their labour needs and strengthening French communities. When combined, these efforts will ensure Canadians benefit from economic and social prosperity for years to come.

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the first-ever launch of category-based selection for Canada’s flagship economic immigration management system, Express Entry. Category-based selection will allow Canada to issue invitations to apply to prospective permanent residents with specific skills, training or language ability.

This year, category-based selection invitations will focus on candidates who have

> a strong French language proficiency or

> work experience in the following

fields:

o healthcare

o science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions

o trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors

o transport

o agriculture and agri-food

By inviting more skilled workers in these professions, category-based selection supports Canada’s commitment to welcoming in-demand professionals into communities across the country. Additionally, by placing a special focus on Francophone immigration, the Government of Canada is ensuring that French communities can continue to live their life in Canada in the official language of their choice.

Category-based selection will make Express Entry more responsive to Canada’s changing economic and labour market needs, while building on the high human capital approach that has been a hallmark of Canada’s successful economic immigration system. These priorities maintain the focus on bringing in skilled workers with the potential to integrate and contribute to Canada’s future.

“Everywhere I go, I’ve heard loud and clear from employers across the country who are experiencing chronic labour shortages. These changes to the Express Entry system will ensure that they have the skilled workers they need to grow and succeed. We can also grow our economy and help businesses with labour shortages while also increasing the number of French-proficient candidates to help ensure the vitality of French-speaking communities. Put simply, Canada’s immigration system has never been more responsive to the country’s social or economic needs.”

PREDICTIONS

July-September 2023

Aries: This time is all about reinventing yourself, as you kick off a new chapter of your life. Out with the old, refresh everything from your image and style to what you do for a living. Money is a big focus in the second half of the year. You could get a nice pay bump, but be careful not to spend it all in one place. Stay open to unexpected work opportunities, possibly a job with travel or relocation. From July onward, you’ll feel an urgent need to follow your calling. Be mindful of the friends you invite into your circle; not all of them will have pure intentions, no matter how they advertise themselves.

Taurus: Your zodiac sign is famous for consistency, but the only constant is change during this time and this change is good. And it’s lucky, especially in the second half of the year, when a fresh chapter of your life begins. During these few months of 2023, push yourself to (lovingly) release people and situations that are no longer a fit. Distance yourself from draining friendships and energy vampires. If your career’s been moving at a slower pace for the past few years, get ready for a professional liftoff! A surprising supporter could emerge and open doors. Keep everything on the up-and-up and avoid any shortcuts or shady schemes. The temptation to gamble will be strong, but this is ultimately a marathon, not a sprint.

Gemini: Leadership is calling, but don’t expect to take any shortcuts. Are your skills up to

par? Level up! Over the next couple of years, you can establish yourself as a heavy hitter or an expert in your field, if you’re willing to put in the time. During these months, cultivate your artistic and spiritual gifts and release what no longer serves you. You’re preparing for a new 12-year chapter in 2024. This is a time to sort the crops and decide what you’ll bring into the next decade-plus of your life. Stay curious and humble, as life could serve important lessons in unexpected packages.

Cancer: No more hiding in that shell, Cancer, the Crab’s out of the bag! You could lead a team to victory and shine in the role. Got a yearning to start your own business, teach or return to school? The next couple of months support a slow-and-steady path toward these dreams. In the second half of 2023, balancing your personal and professional pursuits could take extra negotiating. If you’re the typical caretaking Cancer, it’s time to move away from being the world’s maternal figure and to start setting firm, healthy boundaries. Aim to empower, not enable.

Leo: During the months of August & September, you’ll yearn to spread your wings, so let your adventurous Leo spirit roam free. You’ve been cultivating some big ideas, and during this time of the year, you might be ready to take one to prime time. An exciting new career opportunity could be in the making, but you may need more support from loved ones to pull this off. Old issues around power, trust and control could arise. Sort through those before leaping into any financial entan-

glements or binding relationships. Instead of micromanaging, focus on your own interests. Cultivate a new hobby, start a podcast, draft a few chapters of your memoir. Worldly adventures are calling too. Pack your bags, whether you go solo or take your favorite plus-one along for your royal adventures.

Virgo: During this period, you need ample personal space and strong soulmate-level bonds. You may wish to spend your time on people and pursuits that enrich and transform you. Focus on quality over quantity whether in relationships, work or life experiences. Vacation with friends is on the cards or hit a wellness retreat and start racking up those frequent flier miles. Virgo is the sign of health, and paying attention to the mind-body-soul connection will bring you vibrant, balanced wellbeing. That backache might be a sign that you need to stretch after workouts, but it could also be a sign that you need more emotional support. Read between the lines!

Libra: Finding that all-important sweet spot between other people’s needs and your own identity will be a balancing act for all Librans. You’ll crave more freedom in all your connections, nobody’s fencing you! The most attractive feature you can cultivate is your own identity. And while you’re busy getting excited about being YOU, why not pursue financial self-sufficiency as well? A regular fitness routine that targets your core and gut health will complete your total life glow-up. Gaining strength everywhere, from your body to your boundaries to your bank account will

The Times of Canada | July 2023 Edition 60

make you feel utterly vibrant.

Scorpio: In July, you can emerge from this karmic cocoon with stronger relationships and vibrant good health. But, before you leap into the spotlight, make sure your game is tight. Polish your presentation and tweak your talents to compete in the modern marketplace. Relationships could turn super-serious during this time. The second half of the year sets the stage for that. Just don’t forget to have fun, Scorpio, a little lightness goes a long way. You may start gently snipping the cords with family or transitioning into a more adult relationship with your clan. You can still maintain close bonds while setting boundaries that allow you and them to express your individuality. Your home also becomes a “manifestation station” so clear the clutter and create a space that attracts abundance.

Sagittarius: You’re falling in love again, Sagittarius and this time, it’s with your life! While your stars will be happy to offer romantic escapades and high-octane fun, the main event is happening on any stage you strut across. A long-distance attraction could also heat up. Taking care of your body is also a huge new hotspot, as the stars reward your efforts to eat green, clean and lean. Transform yourself from the inside out by reducing stress and shifting your mindset, then go break a sweat with an endorphin-pumping workout. You could buy or a sell property too.

3.5 billion people get on planes and travel either domestically or internationally every single year. Reasons for flying vary and include going on vacation, seeing family, traveling for work, and everything in-between.

While the people who fly and their reasons for doing so are radically different, there is one trait that everyone who steps foot on a plane universally shares They hate layovers.

Layovers are the scourge of humanity. In the worst of times, they make you miss connections and opportunities. In the best of times, they induce unbearable levels of boredom.

To help make your next layover a little more tolerable, below, we share with you 5 solid ways you can kill time between when you land and when your next flight starts boarding.

Binge Watch That Show You’ve Been Considering

If your airport has WiFi (god help you if it doesn’t) and one of the best things you can do to kill time during a layover is binge watch that show you’ve been thinking of picking up. You know, that one all of your friends told you was good, but you never got around to watching.

A long layover should give you more

Dying on Your Layovers? Easy Ways to Kill Time at an Airport

than enough time to smash a few episodes.

Drink

This suggestion may not be for everyone but for those of you that love a good beer, glass of wine or cocktail, airport layovers can be a great excuse to throw a few back.

We love going to airport sports bars, nursing a beer and using our order as an excuse to loiter in front of a television set for 4+ hours. Whenever you think your waitress is going to kick you out, you just order another round.

Window Shop

Rich people love shopping to kill time at airports. If you’re rich, awesome! Shop away. If you’re not rich, also awesome! Window shop!

Caution: Checking out all the cool perfumes, advancements in neck pillows, and magazines airports have on tap may lead to the occasional impulse buy. If you’re wary of your ability to browse without buying, try giving your credit card to a travel companion for safe keeping.

Make Money

If humans weren’t such good procrastinators, we’d love airport layovers

because they’d give us ample time to work and make money! The thing is though that feeling obligated to work sucks

Still, we’re obliged to tell you that if you have 5 hours at an airport, you’re better off using them to be productive than to kill time.

If productivity is as dirty a word to you as it is to us, you could play casino slots from your mobile device and pretend to make money That’s almost a good use of time, right?

Set Goals for Your Future

We love killing time by coming up with goals on how we could better use our time in the future… If that sounds like an oxymoron it’s probably because it might be.

Quick Tips to Keep Your Vehicle’s A/C in Tip-Top Shape

With summer temperatures breaking records across the country, it’s never been more important to have a properly working air conditioner in your vehicle. Not only is it essential for keeping you cool and comfortable, but it’s also a crucial safety feature. Your A/C can help defog your windows and keep you from getting distracted or irritable in hot weather.

Plus, if your A/C isn’t working well, it can signal that something more serious is wrong with your vehicle. Ignoring the problem could lead to an expensive repair bill down the road.

Here are four common signs that your vehicle’s air conditioner is having

trouble:

1. Reduced Air Flow

2. Warm Air Is Coming Out

3. Sharp, unpleasant smell

4. 4. It’s Not Turning On

Here are a few quick tips to keep your A/C in tip-top shape:

1. Get it serviced: Just like your vehicle’s engine, your A/CC system needs regular maintenance. This includes checking the refrigerant levels, cleaning the condenser, and ensuring all hoses are in good condition.

2. Use it regularly: Believe it or not, using your A/C regularly is one of the

best ways to keep it in good shape. This circulates the lubricant within the system and prevents the seals from drying out.

3. Don’t turn it on if it’s been sitting for a while: If your vehicle has been sitting for a while (like over the winter), don’t turn on the A/C immediately. The compressor can seize up if it hasn’t been used in a while, so it’s best to let it run for a few minutes before turning on the A/C.

4. Avoid idling: If you’re going to be stopped for more than a few minutes, it’s best to turn off the A/C. This prevents the engine from working harder than it needs to and helps save fuel.
