“One thing that brings me happiness is to ensure that I give back to the community through my work in social services, so that everyone can experience a bit of the life that I am privileged to have”, Manvir.
Manvir Singh Pangly
Champion of Inclusivity and Community Empowerment
Manvir Singh Pangly is fueled by a profound dedication to fostering support and cultivating an inclusive, secure environment for all. “One thing that brings me happiness is to ensure that I give back to the community through my work in social services, so that everyone can experience a bit of the life that I am privileged to have”, Manvir says. With aspirations to further his impact, Manvir aims to
The Times of Canada | April 2024 Edition 12
pursue a master’s degree in counseling, envisioning a future where he can diminish the stigma surrounding seeking mental health support within the South Asian community.
In his spare time, Manvir enjoys creating digital content and sharing experiences via social media. Social media has allowed him to connect with others around the world and has given him a platform to spread positivity and love.
During the pandemic, social media was a place where many people connected. The first few months of the pandemic allowed him to explore some of his hobbies and one of those hobbies was running. He was able to run at 30 different trails/parks within the lower mainland. He showcased all of
them on his social media.
Through this he was able to gain a wider following of people, who had the same interests, and they were able to connect through that. Small businesses were also on the rise during the pandemic as people tried to find ways to bring in income and Manvir found it very important to talk about these businesses to the following, he has on his social media. By working with these small businesses, he was able to share his great experiences on his platform which allowed these businesses to gain more clientele.
As mentioned in the beginning, connecting with others and spreading love and kindness have always been important to Manvir. TikTok has been an outlet where he is able to be his authentic self through daily vlogs, motivational videos,
showcasing restaurants/bars, cooking videos. Through that he recently collaborated with two businesses. One of them being a local café & bar in Surrey, BC offering a unique and refined blend of café and restaurant (@ruexcafeandbar) and the other, a small business that is dedicated to keeping the Punjabi culture and language alive within the community (@thetaurbykaur).
“I love creating content. It brings me immense joy, enabling me to express my true self and connect with remarkable individuals within our community. I am profoundly grateful for the unwavering support of my loved ones, and I continually remind myself to embrace authenticity and self-love,” reflects Manvir, sharing his guiding mantra: “Just be yourself. There is no one better.” This mantra serves not to instill overconfidence but rather to foster a deep sense of self-appreciation and trust.

In the heart of Surrey, when people talk about bhangra, the name Rupee Kainth always comes to mind. Known as the dancing mor, Rupee’s passion project took a turn and reached great heights after the birth of the BC Cultural Bhangra Academy.
Rupee Kainth’s journey traces back to his four-year-old self in India, where his love for Bhangra took root. Competing in numerous competitions during his school, college, and university years, he brought honor to his mentors, Ranjit Singh Rana and Hobby Dhaliwal. Destiny led him to Canada in 1997, where he discovered the Surrey India Arts Club through Sarabjit Cheema. In 2003, armed with determination and only two students, Kainth established the BC Cultural Bhangra Academy, start-

ing with dance sessions in a humble parking lot.
Rupee has not only imparted the art and tradition of Bhangra but has cultivated a sanctuary where passion, love, and frog jumps form the heartbeat of a tight-knit family of over 1000s of students.
Kainth, a single parent of two kids Jada and Subegh, poured his heart and soul into BC Cultural, driven by a profound passion for
Bhangra and a desire to preserve Punjabi culture in modern-day Canada. Proud of his Punjabi heritage, the studio’s décor reflects his cultural pride. Kainth believes in bringing Bhangra to the forefront in Canada, promoting not only dance but also a healthy lifestyle through rigorous cardio workouts.
The Times of Canada | April 2024 Edition 24
At BC Cultural, the mantra is quality over quantity was key. Kainth, along with his dedicated instructors, conducted strenuous practice sessions to ensure perfection in the moves. Welcoming individuals of all ages to learn Bhangra, Gidha, Jhoomar, Luddi, Malwai Gidha, Sammi, Dhol, and various other folk instruments; the academy emphasizes perfecting basic moves before joining one of the 25+ teams, including Bhangra, Gidha, and Dhol.
The academy’s junior and senior teams have left their mark in competitions across North America, from Vancouver to Toronto and California to New York. Hours of practice, sweat, and pride have resulted in victory, with BC Cultural consistently placing in the top three in all 150+ competitions they’ve entered. The students’ families play a crucial role in this success, providing unwavering support.
The academy actively participates in community festivals, including the Fusion Festival and Canada Day Celebrations. Fundraisers have become a tradition, with BC Cultural raising significant amounts for Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In 2010, the academy’s talents graced the Winter Olympics
in Vancouver, a testament to their commitment to cultural promotion.
However, Kainth’s journey took a challenging turn as he faced one health setback after another. In 2016, a significant blow came with a diagnosis of bone cancer, plunging him into a state of profound despair as he grappled with the formidable obstacles ahead. Subsequently, he encountered additional challenges with liver disease, leading to a critical juncture where he underwent a liver transplant surgery in July 2023 after a prolonged wait.
Due to this obstacle, Rupee had to sell his studio to focus on his health and recovery. While waiting for this extensive surgery Rupee lost five years of his life. During this period his kidneys were also functioning at a very low capacity, but he came through resilient. During this time Vancouver General Hospital took extremely good care of him, they were efficient, professional, and empathetic.
Yet, lifted by the unwavering support of his community and his steadfast belief in his dreams, Kainth emerged triumphant from this arduous ordeal. The #GiveRupeeLife campaign rapidly gained momentum, standing as a beacon of hope and inspiration throughout his battle against liver disease and subsequent surgery in July 2023. This campaign not only provided Kainth with essential medical support but also infused his
days with renewed hope, happiness, and a sense of purpose during the waiting and recovery period. It highlighted the profound bond shared between Kainth and his extensive network of students, friends, and extended family, demonstrating their collective determination to overcome adversity and embrace his life with resilience and optimism.
Rupee’s firm belief in Baba Deep Singh ji is a contributing factor in his second chance at living life. Now, as Rupee embarks on the path to recovery, he stands ready to rekindle his presence in the Bhangra scene. BC Cultural, one of Rupee Kainth’s greatest achievements has led him to continue growing his journey. Now he is thriving as he takes his next big steps with the rise of Bhangra Revolution competition. With a focus on giving back to the community, spreading folk cultural dance across the continent remains a key goal.

the VPD Scam Prevention for Seniors Initiative
As our society becomes more digitally connected, the risk of fraud targeting seniors has escalated. To address this concern, Sgt. Rita Raj, Detective Constable Julie Gilmore, Detective Constable Rob Dairon and their team have taken proactive steps by organizing fraud prevention seminars specifically tailored to educate and empower seniors. These seminars play a crucial role in equipping older individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to safeguard themselves against scams and fraudulent activities.
Seniors are often targeted due to their perceived vulnerability, limited familiarity with technology, and trusting nature. Recognizing the need for comprehensive education, the Vancouver Police Department, Scam Prevention for Seniors program has initiated fraud prevention sessions
to help seniors identify scams and prevent them from becoming victims of scams.
Investigators from VPD’s Financial Crime, Major Crime and Cybercrime units provide well-rounded insights into the types of fraud prevalent in the community. The seminar content is carefully planned to address the specific concerns and challenges faced by seniors. Topics include common scams such as grandchild bail scams, emergency scams, artificial intelligence, distraction thefts, phishing emails, cybercrimes and provide safe online practices. The sessions are offered in various languages.
The seminars create a space for open dialogue and allows seniors to share their experiences and concerns. This not only builds a sense of community
but also allows organizers to tailor future seminars based on real-life scenarios. The sessions offer a robust question-and-answer period enabling seniors to seek clarification on specific topics, ensuring that the information is relevant and easily understood.
Organizing fraud prevention sessions for seniors not only addresses the immediate threat of fraud but also fosters a sense of community and empowerment. By combining educational efforts, collaborative partnerships, and engaging content, Sgt. Rita Raj and Detective Constable Julie Gilmore contribute significantly to enhancing the security and well-being of seniors in the digital age.
In an exemplary demonstration of dedication to community welfare, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to
The Times of Canada | April 2024 Edition 36 Officers Pioneer
Sgt. Rita Raj and Detective Constable Julie Gilmore who have taken proactive measures to protect seniors from fraud. Their tireless efforts in creating and launching a fraud prevention program stand as a testament to their commitment to safeguarding vulnerable members of our community.
The scam prevention program they have developed is founded on principles of education and empowerment. Through informative workshops, personalized assistance, and practical guidance, these officers have equipped seniors with the knowledge and tools necessary to detect and prevent fraud.
Sgt. Rita Raj
Rita began her career in 2008 with the Delta PD before transferring to VPD in 2010. Rita worked in front-line operations/patrol for over eight years and spent time as a Detective Constable in the Sex Crimes Unit before joining the Major Crime Section Robbery Assault & Arson Unit in 2018, where she led numerous high profile and complex investigations. Rita has field trained, coached and mentored new members in operations and investigative divisions. Rita is a facilitator and assessor and works closely with the training unit. She is currently a Sergeant seconded to the Real Time Intelligence Centre for the Province. There she leads an integrated multi-jurisdiction team consisting of RCMP officers and Intelligence Analysts who gather and disseminate information to front
line officers around the province in real time to enhance public safety. Rita is also a member of the Grandparent Scam working group for Canada.
Detective Constable Julie Gilmore
Julie has been with the VPD since 2009 and has had a very similar path to Rita, having spent eight years in front-line operations/patrol before moving to the Sex Crimes Unit as a Detective Constable. She has also led many high-profile investigations in her current role as a Detective Constable in the Major Crimes Section. Julie is a member of the Grandparents Scam working group for Canada. She is also a very active volunteer in her community.
This program is proudly supported by the Vancouver Police Foundation. “If you abandon the present moment, you cannot live the moments of your daily life deeply.” Thich Nhat Hanh
As we move out of the dark days of winter, we begin to experience renewal in the spring weather. Spring is often described as a time of birth and new beginnings. What simple changes can you make to move into this season with an appreciation and awareness of how you are living?
What does it mean to live in the present moment? Have you tried to do this and been overwhelmed by all the thoughts in your mind about the past and the future? How would your life be different if you could just focus on the here and now and live your life with more intention.
As a clinical counsellor, I have asked many of my clients to attempt to live in this way. Yes, in therapy we unpack the past and make plans for the future, but what if we could learn to live our lives differently in the present. We live in a world in which we are inundated with information, responsibilities, and challenges. What
if we became more aware of our thoughts and feelings, and adjusted our behaviors to appreciate the experience we are currently having?
We often spend too much time worrying about the future. We are concerned about money and family issues. We worry about making the best decisions, and we feel anxious over things we often have no control. What if you were to begin to look at all the things that are going well in your life? I’m not saying that we cannot plan ahead, or think about the future, but what if we just tried to remain in the present, and appreciated this moment?
Notice what is happening around you. Really just taking it all in. Don’t think about what you have to do in an hour, but what you are doing right now. Take a moment to remember the people in your life that make it wonderful. Is it your parents, your partner, your siblings, or your chil-
dren?
You will begin to notice that your presence and mindfulness will allow you to enjoy each moment more, whether you are watching your child’s soccer game, having coffee with a friend, or working on a project. Just take a moment to enjoy it instead of rushing into the next task.
At the start of each day or before you go to sleep at night, take a moment to give thanks for two or three things in your life. They don’t have to be big things. It could be the food you ate, the friendship you cherish, or the sounds of a bird singing. You will notice that the more gratitude you feel for the little things in life, the more you begin to notice how wonderful your life is and all that you have to be thankful for. Let’s go into this spring season being more present and fuller with gratitude.

Rooted in ancient Indian philosophy and practices, Ayurveda offers a profound understanding of skin health that transcends superficial treatments to address the root causes of various dermatological conditions. From acne and eczema to psoriasis and dermatitis, Ayurveda provides a comprehensive approach to skincare that encompasses mind, body, and spirit.
At the heart of Ayurvedic skincare lies the concept of doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—which govern the physiological functions of the body and influence one’s unique constitution or prakriti. According to Ayurveda, imbalances in these doshas can manifest as skin disorders, signaling disharmony within the internal ecosystem. Therefore, the treatment of skin diseases in Ayurveda involves
therapies tailored to indi-
vidual needs.
Herbal remedies form the cornerstone of Ayurvedic skincare, drawing upon the bountiful offerings of nature to nourish and heal the skin. Neem, known as the “village pharmacy” in India, is revered for its potent antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. In Ayurveda, neem leaves, oil, and extracts are used to cleanse the skin, alleviate acne, and soothe inflammatory conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
Aloe vera, the “plant of immortality”
in ancient Egyptian culture, finds its place of honor in Ayurvedic skincare for its cooling, moisturizing, and healing properties. Rich in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and polysaccharides, aloe vera gel penetrates deep into the skin, hydrating parched cells and promoting cellular repair. Whether applied topically or ingested internally, aloe vera supports skin health from the inside out, soothing
sunburns, reducing redness, and accelerating wound healing. Moreover, its gentle nature makes it suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin.
Sandalwood, with its distinctive aroma and skin-nourishing qualities, holds a special place in Ayurvedic skincare rituals. Sandalwood powder, derived from the heartwood of the Santalum album tree, is prized for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and astringent properties. In Ayurveda, sandalwood paste is applied topically to soothe irritated skin, reduce inflammation, and improve complexion. Whether used in face masks, scrubs, or aromatherapy, sandalwood evokes a sense of tranquility and rejuvenation, inviting individuals to reconnect with their inner beauty and serenity.
Similarly, turmeric, with its golden hue and healing prowess, has been treasured for centuries as a skin-lov-

ing herb. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, exhibits powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, making it a valuable ally in the fight against acne, blemishes, and skin irritations.
Beyond topical treatments, Ayurveda emphasizes the interconnectedness of diet, lifestyle, and mental well-being in maintaining skin health. According to Ayurvedic principles, consuming a balanced diet that aligns with one’s dosha can help prevent imbalances that contribute to skin disorders. For example, individuals with Pitta dominance may benefit from cooling foods such as leafy greens, cucumbers, and sweet fruits, while those with Vata imbalances may thrive on warm, nourishing meals that provide grounding and stability.
Moreover, lifestyle practices that promote stress reduction and emotional balance play a crucial role in Ayurvedic skincare. Stress is known to exacerbate many skin conditions, triggering inflammation and disrupting the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Through practices such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, Ayurveda offers tools for managing stress, cultivating inner peace, and enhancing resilience. By harmonizing mind, body, and spirit, Ayurveda empowers individuals to embrace their inherent beauty and radiate confidence from within.
While Ayurveda offers profound insights and remedies for managing skin diseases, it is essential to approach its principles with reverence and discernment. Consulting a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner can provide personalized guidance and ensure safe, effective treatment, particularly for complex or chronic conditions. Moreover, integrating Ayurvedic practices with conventional dermatological care can offer a synergistic approach to skincare that addresses both the symptoms and underlying imbalances.
In conclusion, Ayurveda offers a holistic paradigm for skincare that honors the intricate interplay of nature, health, and beauty. By embracing the wisdom of Ayurveda, individuals can embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery and self-care, reclaiming their innate vitality and radiance. In a world saturated with synthetic skincare products and quick-fix solutions, Ayurveda serves as a timeless reminder of the healing power of nature and the profound connection between inner harmony and outer glow.

Essential Summer Travel Tips for a Stress-Free Vacation
Summer is the perfect time to embark on exciting adventures, soak up the sun, and create unforgettable memories. Whether you’re planning a beach vacation, a road trip, or an overseas adventure, proper preparation is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey. Here are some essential summer travel tips to help you make the most of your vacation:
1. Plan Ahead: Start your summer travel preparations well in advance. Research your destination, book accommodations, flights, and activities early to secure the best deals and avoid last-minute hassles. Create a detailed itinerary but remain flexible to accommodate unexpected changes.
2. Pack Light, Pack Right: Summer attire tends to be lightweight and casual, but don’t forget to pack essentials like sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and insect repellent. Choose versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched, and consider the activities you’ll be participating in. Remember to leave room in your suitcase for souvenirs!
3. Stay Hydrated: With the summer heat in full swing, staying hydrated is crucial. Carry a refillable water bottle and drink plenty of fluids throughout
the day, especially if you’ll be spending time outdoors. Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption, as they can contribute to dehydration.
4. Protect Your Skin: Sunburn can quickly put a damper on your vacation. Apply sunscreen with a high SPF rating (at least 30) generously and frequently, especially after swimming or sweating. HEALTH & SAFETY IN WORKPLACE
Health & Safety is very essential though the most ignored subject in the workplace. Workers’ health & safety is often underseen by employers and managers. Just like the safety of commercial truck drivers, safety of employees working in the retail stores, offices, or warehouses is also equally important.
Every small or large employer should have a Health & Safety program in place. A good Health & Safety program includes policies and procedures developed for the safe operation of the workplace equipment and safety of the workers. There are many elements of a good Health & Safety program. Today we are going to discuss one of the elements which is an essential part of a busy workplace.
Often, we see that workers get hurt at the workplace while doing a specific job. They can be new to that job or doing it for many years. Every job has its own hazards. Even if it is driving a commercial vehicle, a forklift, using a pallet jack for loading or unloading the goods from a truck or just working on a computer in an office. It is the employer’s responsibility to recognize all the hazards and develop safe work procedures for each hazardous job.
Failure in doing this leads to workplace injuries. Workplace injuries need to be recognized by the managers and supervisor and brought to employers’ attention. Many workers get hurt at work, but they do not report their injury to their manager or supervisor as they do not think that there is any need to report the injury. It is the worker’s responsibility to report the workplace injury to their manager and WorkSafeBC. Then it is the manager’s responsibility to report the injury to the employer and the employer should report it to WorkSafeBC as well.
Many employers think that reporting workplace injuries to WorkSafeBC will increase the cost of their annual premiums. This is not so true. The annual premium is based on the whole industry and not just one workplace. For example, General Trucking is an industry, and it has its own set premium percentage for all the trucking companies.
How does reporting a workplace injury help the employer? Well, it helps in many ways, such as:
◊ Reporting a workplace injury gives the employer chance to keep track of the injuries
◊ it helps in creating safe work pro-
cedures for the hazardous jobs
◊ it helps employers in understanding the specific job training needs for the employees
◊ it helps workers in understanding the benefits of specific job training
◊ it helps in making the relationship of employer and workers healthy
◊ it helps in reducing the cost of WorkSafeBC premiums for the whole industry
◊ most of all, it helps in reducing the workplace injuries
A good and experienced Health & Safety consultant can help the employer in developing the Health & Safety program as per the workplace requirements.

Public-Private College Partnership Programs for International Students - An Update
On January 22, 2024, IRCC confirmed that international graduates of college programs delivered through a public-private curriculum licensing arrangement would no longer be eligible for a post-graduation work permit.
This change will take effect on May 15, 2024, rather than the previously announced date of September 1, 2024. This means that international students who begin this type of program on May 15, 2024, or later will not be eligible for a post-graduation work permit when they graduate.
The change in post-graduation work permit criteria does not prevent a graduate of one of these programs from applying for a different type of work permit upon graduation. For occupations that face a labour shortage in Canada, a graduate could apply for a work permit supported by an
employer’s approved labour market impact assessment, for example.
The list of designated learning institutions includes whether an institution’s graduates are eligible for a post-graduation work permit and is available IRCC’s website. IRCC will continue to work with provinces and territories to proactively identify programs that have been affected by the clarification and will update this list as we receive additional information from them.
International students interested in public-private college partnership programs in Canada that may lead to eligibility for the PGWP should research program offerings, eligibility criteria, and post-graduation opportunities at their chosen institution. They should also consult with the institution’s international student services office and review information
provided by IRCC for the most up-todate guidance on PGWP eligibility and application procedures.

Navigating Car Loans Essential Considerations for Canadians
In Canada, as in many parts of the world, car loans are a common means for individuals to finance their vehicle purchases. However, amidst the convenience they offer, there are critical factors Canadians should be aware of to make informed decisions when obtaining car loans.
Interest rates play a pivotal role in car financing and can significantly impact the overall cost of borrowing. In Canada, interest rates can vary depending on economic conditions, lender policies, and individual creditworthiness. Prospective car buyers should strive to secure the most favorable interest rate possible by maintaining a healthy credit score and comparing offers from multiple lenders.
Loan terms are another crucial consideration. While longer loan terms may result in lower monthly payments, they often lead to higher overall interest costs. Conversely, shorter loan terms can save money
in the long run but may come with higher monthly payments. Canadians should carefully evaluate their financial situation and preferences to determine the most suitable loan term for their needs.
Down payments are commonly required when obtaining a car loan in Canada. Making a substantial down payment can reduce the amount borrowed and lower monthly payments. Additionally, a larger down payment may improve loan approval chances and result in better interest rates.
It’s essential for Canadian car buyers to shop around and compare loan offers from various lenders. Different financial institutions may offer different interest rates, loan terms, and conditions, allowing borrowers to find the most competitive options available.
Canadian car buyers should also be mindful of additional costs associated with car ownership, such as taxes,
insurance, and maintenance. Factoring in these expenses alongside monthly loan payments is crucial for creating a realistic budget and avoiding financial strain.
Lastly, Canadians should review the terms and conditions of any car loan agreement carefully before signing. Paying attention to details such as prepayment penalties, late fees, and other potential charges ensures a clear understanding of the loan terms and obligations.
In conclusion, while car loans provide a convenient way for Canadians to finance their vehicle purchases, it’s essential to approach them with caution and awareness. By understanding key considerations such as interest rates, loan terms, down payments, and additional costs, Canadian car buyers can make informed decisions that align with their financial goals and circumstances.
