INDRA BHAN

COO, SURREY BOARD OF TRADE

Indra Bhan immigrated to Canada in 2002 with her family. She was born in Fiji and is the youngest of five children. She completed her education in Fiji and started working at the age of 19. She worked in the hospitality industry, working as an Executive Assistant at the Sheraton Fiji, then in the airline industry in various positions ultimately as Customer Service Manager for Fiji Airways. She has been married for

35 years and has two sons and one grandson.

Here’s Indra talking about her life journey in Canada and how she got associated with the Surrey Board of Trade.

When we arrived in Canada we lived with my parents in Surrey. My kids started going to school and both my husband and I started seeking jobs. After a couple of job interviews, I realised it will not be easy to find employment. Employers were looking for Canadian education and work experience. I realised that we had to think differently and that we will have to start from the bottom.

In January 2003, I started volunteering at the Surrey Board of Trade (SBOT) to gain Canadian experience and, at the same time, started going to school. It was a very stressful period, and I almost wanted to return to Fiji. Instead, I returned to school to obtain Canadian education and started volunteering to gain Canadian experience. It was challenging; I was in school, a volunteer, worked part-time at Future Shop, and had to

take care of my two young boys. A month later, I was offered a full-time position at the Surrey Board of Trade as an Administrative Assistant. A few months later, I was promoted to the Business Resource Centre Coordina-

The Times of Canada | April 2023 Edition 12

tor position and in February 2004, I again was promoted to be the Membership Services Manager of the Surrey Board of Trade. I progressed very quickly. I handled this position for seven years. I worked hard. I attended numerous community events, met many people, made countless connections and friends.

In March 2011, I was appointed Chief Operating Officer of the Surrey Board of Trade. This came with more responsibilities. I continued to work hard and educate myself. I learned a lot from others. This year I celebrated 20 years with the Surrey Board of Trade and 12 years as the Chief Operating Officer. I believe my persistent personality helped me achieve what I wanted and get to where I am today.

In the coming years, I hope to advance within this role and continue to learn and grow in this industry. In an organization as progressive and dynamic as the Surrey Board of Trade, there is always the opportunity to learn and grow. I believe that you always need to keep learning. You need to listen; you don’t know it all. Be open to what people have to say.

I am very lucky that I chose Surrey as my home. The last 20 years has been a long and beautiful journey and for

the entire 20 years, I have lived and worked in Surrey. We have a beautiful community; we share common perspectives and engage with each other to help each other. A lot of my success today is because of our community.

Steve Kooner is a very successful lawyer and the owner of the law firm, Steve Kooner Law Corporation. Apart from being a successful and famous lawyer, Steve represents our community on various social justice issues. He wants to give back to the community which has showed him immense love & support, and made him successful

GURBUX SINGH SAINI

QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE AWARD WINNER

Gurbux S. Saini is a warm and compassionate individual and is someone that is always willing to lend helping hand. He was born and raised in his paternal village in India and has always been motivated to succeed wherever he saw opportunity.

With only $8 in his pocket, Gurbux travelled to Vancouver with the assistance of his sister and brother-in-law, along with his wife Mohinder and their four-month-old child. Gurbux and his family first settled in Williams Lake British Columbia and started working as a lumber piler at the old Merrill and Wagner sawmill. One of the first things he did was to help fundraise for the establishment of the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple where members of the Punjabi community could go to visit, gather for religious functions and have a sense of belonging. The initial proceeds were raised by members of the community working weekends at the West Fraser Sawmill in addition to their regular jobs.

His sense of community spirit and desire to serve led him to seek to a seat on Williams Lake City Council where he served for 14 years. During his term on council, Gurbux served as Chairman of the finance committee, Parks and Recreation and Public Works.

Williams Lake had a population of 15,000 and approximately 800 people were of South Asian heritage. To

bridge the gap between the different ethnicities, Gurbux was instrumental in establishing a group called the Central Cariboo Multi-Cultural Association. He served as the president and the highlight was the Annual Multicultural Dinner in which people from different cultures and walks of life groups would share their authentic cuisine and entertainment.

After completing his term on Williams Lake City Council, Gurbux felt there was a need for a local crematorium as the nearest facility was three hours away and was difficult to travel during the winter months due to the icy road conditions. Using his community connections, Gurbax approached then Premier Ujjal Dosanjh and the province of British Columbia agreed to match the local funding of the capital costs of the facility. After completion, The Five Rivers crematorium was given to the city of Williams Lake for a nominal fee of one dollar by the local Punjabi community and is now widely used in Williams Lake and the surrounding areas.

Gurbux continued to serve to the city of Williams Lake as

President of the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple society where he founded and provided seed money for the establishment of the Guru Nanak Children’s Fund. The fund is used to educate five orphaned and impoverished around the world until they turn 18 years of age.

For his contribution to the communi ty, Gurbax was nominated for Citizen of the Year by Rotary Club.

In 2016 Gurbux relocated to Surrey and currently resides in the Chimney Hill neighborhood. For the last four years, he has been serving as the president of Fleetwood Port Kell Federal Liberal Association. During the last two federal elections, Gurbux and his team were key in re-electing Ken Hardie the Liberal MP for the area.

Furthermore, he was instrumental in getting a public washroom and picnic tables for the neighborhood park. The facilities are now used for sporting events, social gatherings, family get-togethers and picniWcs etc. Furthermore, Gurbux successfully lobbied the City of Surrey to storge lock boxes at T.E Scott and Hazelnut Meadow’s Park. Currently, Gurbux is working with the City of Surrey and TransLink commission to establish bus service along 76th Ave and 144th street.

In recognition for his outstanding community service, Gurbax was awarded a Queen’s Platinum Jubilee award by Ken Hardie, MP for Fleetwood Port Kells. Gurbux is grateful to Canada for all that this country has done for him and his family and continues to give back to his community.

THE IMPACT OF KIDSPLAY’S PROGRAMS

In 2022, a youth who got the support she needed from her mentors at KidsPlay Foundation, from her school community, and her family, spoke up about gang violence and the impacts it has had on our children, youth and families, was showcased on Global BC, CTV and CBC. She now has so much love for her community, and expresses it at school as part of clubs, at KidsPlay while she runs youth programs and at home! She was part of the KidsPlay Mentorship Program at KidsPlay in 2017 and is now a mentor to many young ones at the programs. This is the impact KidsPlay is trying to make with their programs. Youth and children, and family units, need support more than ever before. The ongoing issues impacting our community are evident for a youth led organization to work harder. As crime rates heighten and engulf our youth, if we do not present positive constructive outlets to youth, or opportunities for them to strengthen their identities and build them up, and don’t make these resources as readily available as the life of crime is, we will continue to fail these young children and youth, hence, destroying families. This stops now. We take action now, and no one organization or municipality has all the solutions, we have to work with a collective approach to make the much-needed change.

Credit Credit Score on Score on mortgage mortgage

Credit score plays an essential role in the mortgage application process in Canada A credit score is a numerical value that reflects an individual's creditworthiness and is calculated based on their credit history. It indicates the level of risk a lender takes by providing credit or a loan to an individual.

In Canada, a good credit score is typically considered to be a score of 680 or above, while a score of 600 or below is considered to be poor When applying for a mortgage in Canada, lenders will review an individual's credit score to determine the likelihood of the borrower repaying the loan.

Credit score ranges – what are they? There's more than one credit scoring model available and more than one range of scores

A high credit score can increase the chances of obtaining a mortgage, as it demonstrates a borrower's ability to make payments on time and manage their credit responsibly It may also result in a lower interest rate on the mortgage.

On the other hand, a low credit score can make it more challenging to obtain a mortgage, and lenders may require a higher down payment In some cases, a low credit score may even result in a mortgage application being denied

Credit scores typically range from 300 to 850. Within that range, scores can usually be placed into one of the five categories: poor, fair, good, very good and excellent

29 800 - 850 EXCELLENT 740 - 799 VERY GOOD 670 - 739 GOOD 580 to 669 FAIR 300 to 579 POOR
Credit Score: a three-digit number that shows lenders your ability to pay bills on time.
Understanding the importance of
It's essential to maintain a good credit score by paying bills on time, keeping credit balances low, and avoiding new credit applications unless necessary.

Ayurveda is an ancient system of Health Care. Ayurvedic diagnosis and treatments are based on Tridoshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Tridosha defines the three fundamental energies or principles which govern the function of our body on the physical and emotional level. Everyone has a unique balance of all three of these energies. Most people have one dosha predominant in their body and some of them are mixture of more than one. Tridoshas play an important role in our body. They are the backbone of Ayurvedic diagnosis and treatments.

Acidity is called Amalpitta in Ayurveda. It is the burning sensation in the stomach that gradually rises in the oesophagus and causes moderate-to-extreme discomfort. According to Ayurveda Amlapitta is a disease of Annavaha Srotasa (gastrointestinal system). The main cause of amalpitta is the aggravation of Pitta Dosha in the body. Pitta is an Ayurvedic humor that symbolizes heat or fire. The balance between Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas is essential to keep the gut free from any kind of disharmony in digesting the food.

Signs & Symptoms: Heart and chest burn, Sour or bitter belching, Nausea, Throat burn, Vomiting, bloating in stomach, Indigestion, Pain in abdomen, Chest pain, Headache, Bad breathe, Mouth ulcer, Fatigue, Tiredness and Itching all over the body are main symptoms of Amalpitta.

According to Ayurveda: Prevention is better than cure. In this modern time, we are very busy but if we follow some very simple tips, we can save ourselves from so many diseases. Our food is our necessity. Everybody wants to eat good and healthy food. Ayurveda recommends

freshly cooked and seasonal food. Always eat on time. Never skip breakfast. As we don’t eat for 8-10 hours in the night, our brain needs its fuel in the morning. Our food is the fuel of our body. Some people try to take healthy food but not eating on regular hours does not work for our body.

For prevention of Amalpitta avoid excessive salty, oily, sour, and spicy foods. Avoid heavy and untimely food. Avoid smoking and alcohol intake. Avoid overcooked, stale and contaminated food. Avoid overeating and eating at irregular hours.

Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Ayurveda recommends a healthy regimen called Dincharya - Daily routine. Keep your inner body clean. To give rest to our stomach and to make it clean ayurveda recommends - Mono diet. Prepare any good food like vegetable soup, Dalia, Khichri, or any lentil. Eat the same food whole day, I mean in breakfast, lunch and dinner eat the same food and drink warm water. It will clean the stomach and will give rest to our digestive system.

Always drink warm water. Cold water is not good for our body. Eat salads, papaya, pomegranate etc. Avoid stress. Do light exercise and

30

walk. Eat at least two hours before going to sleep. After eating don’t sit, walk for 10-15 minutes. Don’t eat heavy, bulk, or fried food at nighttime. These are a few tips to improve the digestion ultimately save ourselves from acidity.

May Goodness of Nature bring you perfect Health and Happiness.

Please consult with your doctor or Health Provider before following any of these tips. Thank you.

Your Health & Sleep

Health is sum of physical, emotional, financial and spiritual wellbeing. Life style plays a significant role in health. Lifestyle, where you play a significant role, this is even more at paly in prevention of chronic diseases like diabetes. Lifestyle includes food, sleep, exercise and physical activity mental wellness, here I share some pointers of good sleep.

Sleep quality is based on 4 factors:

Minutes awake

This is the number of minutes you spend awake during the night after you first go to sleep. People with good sleep quality have 20 minutes or less of wakefulness.

Time asleep

This is the amount of time you spend sleeping while in bed. This should be at least 85 percent of the time for good health.

How long it takes to fall asleep

The quality of your sleep is considered to be good if you fall asleep within 30 minutes of going to bed.

How often you wake up.

Frequent wakefulness can reduce your sleep quality by disrupting your

sleep cycle, which is typically made of four to six stages encompassing rapid-eye-movement (REM is when we have our most vivid dreams and deep sleep. People who wake up frequently may struggle to properly cycle through these stages, which can prevent the healthy recovery and development your brain and body need.

Why is sleep quality important?

Hitting your sleep-quality targets helps ensure that you wake up feeling rested and energized. Missing any of them, on the other hand, can leave you feeling tired the next day, even if you’re in bed for seven-plus hours.

When this happens occasionally, the resulting fatigue can do a number on your attention span, memory, decision-making skills, energy levels and mood. Sleep is essential for keeping your mind and body healthy. So when poor sleep quality happens often, over a long period of time, it can increase the risk of physical and mental health problems like diabetes.

Easy tips to improve sleep quality

Good thing there are plenty of easy ways for mere mortals like us to im-

prove our sleep quality.

Keep the bedroom clean, dark, quiet and cool

Step 1: Declutter the bedroom so you have a clear mind as you drift off to dreamland.

Step 2: Close the curtains, lower the blinds, and cover the LED lights in your electronics. Basically, do whatever it takes to let darkness reign. The human body is programmed to wake when it’s light and sleep when its night, so taking these steps helps prevent any interruption of your natural sleep cycle.

Step 3: Turn off any alarms that could interrupt the silence of the bedroom. If any outside noise is disturbing you, try using earplugs or a white noise on your phone.

Step 4: Drop the thermostat. A warm room isn’t conducive to sleep. Keep your bedroom cooler than the rest of your home, about 15 to 18 degrees Celsius. Plus, you’ll save money on heating bills!

The Times of Canada | April 2023 Edition 32

Ban electronics

TVs, smartphones and laptops are too stimulating to promote good sleep quality. If you’re using your phone as an alarm or for white noise make sure notifications and/or your ringer are turned off, and that the screen isn’t visible. Get active exercising improves because it reduces the time it takes to fall asleep and the amount of time you lie awake in bed.

Stick to a routine

Go to bed at around the same time and you’ll sleep better. A wild weekend can throw your sleep routine off, so dial it back a bit for the sake of your sleep.

Can the caffeine

Tea, coffee and cola, which contain caffeine, can wreck your sleep patterns, so switch to decaffeinated or caffeine-free drinks in the afternoon and evening. Sleep teas like chamomile or peppermint, meanwhile, can help you fall asleep more quickly.

Skip the booze and butt out

Don’t be fooled by alcohol’s sedative effects. It can rob you of a good night’s sleep, so go to sleep sober. And if you need another reason to quit smoking consider how it affects your sleep. The nicotine in cigarettes is a stimulant that can keep you awake and interrupt your sleep patterns.

Can’t sleep, get up

If you’re lying in bed tossing and turning and you can’t fall asleep within 30 minutes or so, sometimes it’s better to get up and do a little light activity such as reading. This can help you relax and get you ready to fall asleep.

Avoid spicy and heavy late-night meals

Spicy food and heavy meals can disturb sleep, especially if they are eaten close to bedtime.

The 3 Principles Youth Group

The 3 Principles of Psychology (Mind, Consciousness and Thought) is a concept taught by Sydney Banks, who was also a Canadian broadcaster and producer. This is a concept that is showcased across the globe, supporting more people in experiencing a richer life. The 3 Principles Youth Group is a free opportunity for youth to have meaningful conversations once a week about the 3 Principles. These conversations were introduced and facilitated by Shenan Charania, a Transformative Coach who works with executives, business owners, leadership teams, and other such groups to help them access more creativity, efficiency, and productivity in their work.

He created the 3 Principles Youth Group to support youth’s understanding of their mind and live an enhanced and enriched life. Ketan Notay, who is one of the members of the 3 Principles Youth Group, has been exploring this concept for 2+ years. He recognizes the concept to be “A way of living life to its fullest.”

According to Felix Valariyil, who has also been studying the concept for 2+ years, it is a “manual to how our human mind works.” He elaborates on how it refers to the “Mind, Consciousness and Thought”, which according to Shenan Charania provides “an understanding of the fundamentals that describe how our reality as human beings is created from the inside out.” Learning about the 3 Principles allows us to navigate our own mind, which reflects well for our mind and body’s

well-being, and the world we can contribute to. The 3 Principles allow us to understand that we are all simply living in a thought-related world, where we experience our perspectives and not reality. Our perspectives and thoughts hence do not carry much merit with them. Our thoughts and perspectives also are what cause the feelings and emotions we experience, including stress, anxiety, depression, etc. Hence rather than attempting

Additionally, with regards to mental health, the benefits the 3 Principles of Psychology bestows us are tremendous. The principles lend itself to an awareness of how our mind works. It allows us to experience life in a more meditative state of mind. We are permitted to simply let thoughts come and go, knowing that they are simply self-created and not the reality. Valariyil finds that the principles grants the opportunity to “experience every feeling” and has shown him “that no feelings can truly bother you no matter how much they may affect you at the moment.” The 3 Principles allow us to explore concepts like grief and anxiety, without becoming the state of mind or becoming a victim to it. It allows us to fully experience our emotions, as they come and go; recognizing that they are originating from our thoughts, and thoughts are something we do not possess or have control over. Valariyil then ends with how “Having a clearer mind allows you to make better decisions in every way possible.

to change our thoughts, we can simply embrace them and realize that they do not carry much merit; allowing us to not act on our thoughts; allowing us to not define ourselves, our lives, or people based on that; and to experience the emotions that come with our thoughts as opposed to dismissing them. Through clarity, we can recognize the warmth that comes with our intuition and follow this gut feeling to help resolve our issues, as opposed to being stuck in our thought-related world and attempting to resolve things.

Overall, the 3 Principles as a concept has lent itself to a large change in the members of the 3 Principles Youth Group. As shared by Charania “The 3 principles Understanding - first articulated and brought to this world by Sydney Banks - gives human beings the opportunity to experience life again from their true essence, instead of their past experiences - which then allows them to live a life that is fulfilled with depth, meaning and truth. It helps people live and relate to each other with more value, inclusiveness, and understanding.”

Whether you call it therapy, counselling, psychotherapy or talk therapy, it is very much the same. This can be anything from relationship issues, problematic behaviors, or beliefs that are harming one’s mental health. It may seem like a frightening

TREATS CAN BE GOOD FOR YOU

Health Benefits of Frozen Yogurt

Frozen yogurt (more affectionately known as froyo) is more than just delicious. It’s an easily customizable dessert that comes in a variety of flavors. Some people love it for its taste, but there are more that love it for its health benefits.

Calcium

Tired of drinking milk to get calcium? Treat yourself with some frozen yogurt!

Froyo has an average of 178 milligrams of calcium per half-cup serving, it’s clearly an excellent source of calcium. Calcium is well known for its positive effects on bones and teeth, but it does much more than keep them strong. Calcium intake can help reduce the growth of excess cells in the colon, which in turn could help prevent cancer.

Low calories

If you’re counting calories it can seem like every day is a struggle to eat with-

in your limits.

If you have a sweet tooth, you’re limited to only so many options. Luckily dessert fans can rejoice, frozen yogurt is here to save the day.

Frozen yogurt itself is a very low-calorie food, even when it’s flavored. If you’re careful with your toppings and serving size, you can have a nice low-calorie dessert if you choose to eat frozen yogurt.

Improve digestive health

Frozen yogurt is full of probiotics. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for the human body, and froyo is full of the two helpful organisms Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilous.

The helpful bacteria can help balance the amount of microflora in the gut. If you look for frozen yogurt that has the live and active culture’s seal, you’ll have a dessert that’s great for

digestive health.

Froyo has tons of protein

Cookies, cake, and other desserts may be tasty, but they don’t have much nutritional content. Traditional desserts are full of sugars and carbs, but frozen yogurt is full of protein.

Protein filled snacks can help you feel more satisfied. Frozen yogurt can be the perfect snack for people that need to feel full. There’s a lot of protein in a half cup of frozen yogurt, more than enough to justify this sweet treat occasionally.

Low fat

On top of all the health benefits, froyo has to offer, its low-fat content Wmay be the best.

Ice cream can be very fattening, but frozen yogurt has almost half the fat of ice cream. If you want to make sure that you’re keeping your fat content low, you can stick to non-fat flavors.

Oven Cleaning Without the Chemicals

Oven cleaning can be one of the most tedious of all cleaning tasks. Unless you line your oven with aluminum foil before every use, you’re more than likely to have spillage and crumbs at the bottom. Even self-cleaning ovens can’t get all the charred remains off the sides or the base. That’s when the heavy-duty cleaning comes in.

However, homemade oven cleaning solutions can work just as well as store-bought cleaners in tackling tough food residue on the inside of your oven. Read through the following solutions that can be created with items you already have in your pantry!

Baking Soda Paste

For such a simple solution, this works surprisingly well on tough-to-clean oven messes. Mix one part baking soda with enough water to make a paste, coat your oven and let it sit overnight. Once it hardens, don rubber gloves and use an old spatula to scrape the residue off. If you have a hard time scraping off the caked-on

solution, use a wet sponge to loosen it. However, be warned that this can get messy before the cleaned surface is revealed.

Salt, Vinegar and Heat

Heat your oven to between 125 and 250 degrees. Once warmed, spray the oven surface with water and vinegar and add salt to any caked-on grime. This method seems to require a little elbow grease and may not work for all spills, but adding a little baking soda to the vinegar-and-water solution may be all you need to loosen even the toughest grime and restore your oven to sparkling cleanliness.

Soap and Baking Soda

This method begins with sprinkling dry baking soda on your oven floor. After letting it sit for a few minutes, take three teaspoons of borax, onefourth cup of vinegar and one-eighth cup of dish soap and mix it with two cups of hot water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the baking soda and let it sit overnight. Wipe

away with a cloth or sponge and use the remaining solution to tackle any tougher spills or stains.

Clearly, adding baking soda to your arsenal of home-cleaning supplies is a must when it comes to oven and appliance cleaning. If you suspect your oven isn’t heating to temperature, cooking unevenly or malfunctioning in any way and giving it a thorough cleaning doesn’t help, consider calling a local professional to check the lines and rule out any electrical issues. However, keeping your oven clean and stain-free is one way to make sure buildup on the oven floor won’t potentially cause a fire or set off your smoke alarms. Stay on top of oven cleaning by running not only your oven’s self-clean setting but also tackling any larger or set-in stains with one of the solutions listed above!

Happy cleaning!

AMRITSARI KULCHA

Bhai Kulwant Singh Kulchian Wale is one of the city’s oldest addresses when it comes to Amritsari kulche. You must try their renowned aloo kulcha when you are in Amritsar.

Seven layers of flour, a lot of patience, and a generous amount of anything — from potatoes to paneer to cauliflower — can be used to stuff a kulcha to produce a delectable dish. A hot tandoor is used to cook the dough after it has been flattened out.

One of the rare foods in the entire world that even has its own sound, the crispy crunch, is the renowned kulcha. And speaking of crunchy, the history of the kulcha has plenty of it.

The Indus Valley civilization is when tandoors and tandoori cooking first appeared. The stuffed kulcha, however, is said to have originated from naan. Meanwhile, Naan arrived in

One can only speculate that this creation was born in an anonymous kitchen one fine day when a cook decided that the naan was just plain boring and decided to stuff the naan with some interesting ingredients.

Despite this, there is evidence demonstrating that Amritsar and kulcha have a history dating back at least 200 years. The seven-layered pastry technique is said to have been introduced by the French cooks of English officers. Even Shah Jahan once adored his naans and kulchas. And the Nawab of Hyderabad used seven kulchas to create his coat of arms.

When we talk about safety, in our minds, we may imagine the images of a pylon on the road, a person wearing a safety harness and a hard hat or someone with a safety vest. The aspect of safety is very broad. In trucking, the word safety can refer to the safety of the commercial truck driver, the safety of the other vehicles on the road, the safety the people working in the warehouse loading and unloading the trailers and so on.

Hiring a commercial truck driver is a task with high responsibility. An employer should be very careful while making a choice of hiring a commercial truck driver. The employer should check a variety of things like, do a background check on the driver, check N abstract provided by ICBC, check his personal and work history etc.

A reference check from the driver’s previous employers plays an important role. This confirms the work

ethics of the driver. The employer should try to get as many reference checks as they can. These reference checks should be kept in file for the audit purposes.

Sending the driver for a road test is also very important. This can give a fair idea to the employer how safe the commercial truck driver is and how he behaves when he is behind the wheels among other vehicles on the road.

Only doing a few checks at the time of hiring is not sufficient. The employer should do periodic checks on the commercial truck drivers. He should obtain an updated N abstract from ICBC every year, send the driver again for a road test with a qualified trainer etc.

The employer should do an annual safety check on the drivers which includes the information on how many tickets the commercial driver

has received, how many logbook violations he has received or how many CVSE (commercial vehicle safety enforcement) violations he has received during the roadside inspections.

At the end, it all depends on the employer which commercial driver he hires and if he had made the right choice of hiring him.

Gemini: You are the luckiest and most loving zodiac sign for this period as the Sun shines on you. You are now free from secret self-doubt and just when you really need leadership skills, then they are there. You will experience a richly romantic time with a special someone. Tackling a knowledge gap is smarter than trying to hide it.

Aquarius: The Sun is setting you up for luck and fun in your life. Though your work brings greater challenges this time they are the ones you want. You’ll be getting even closer to someone special because now both of you can say what you think is good about the relationship and what you would like to change. The Befuddled Consumer

How a rise in the available number of jobs might not be a good thing for the economy (and for you)

On one hand, Canada is continuously adding more and more new jobs into the economy while on the other, companWy-wide layoffs continue to rise. With this in mind, we cannot help but wonder what the economy will look like in the next 2-3 years and the impact this phenomenon shall have on the average Canadian.

In the traditional sense, a recession may be characterized by low/negative growth in the GDP, decrease in prices, credit impairment, bankruptcy and the main ingredient of this conversation – company-wide layoffs. While this might not be a surprise for those scrolling through the metaverse or keeping a keen eye on international news, according to Jessy Bains, Editor at LinkedIn news, these layoffs can be seen all around us as we watch world renowned companies such as Amazon, the Hudson’s Bay Company, BestBuy and Bed Bath and Beyond, continue to dismiss workers or even close entire stores.

On one hand people are losing jobs. On the other hand, there are new jobs.

If one were to analyze this situation from an economic point of view, it might be said that since companies continue to lay off more and more workers, new workers or immigrant workers enter the market creating an increase in the pool of ‘supply’ of labour as well as an increase in the demand for jobs at the same time, or quite simply, an influx of people willing to work. And are these people able to find work? Yes. According to the Labor Force Survey, the unemployment rate in Canada holds steady at a mere 5%. So, if more and more jobs enter the market and people find work, why are people suddenly so worried about recession?

So, here’s the thing. An increase in jobs might not be a good thing.

Strictly speaking from an economic viewpoint, yes, an increase in the number of available job opportunities may not necessarily be a good thing for the economy. Here’s how it works. As more and more job opportunities are available in the market, more and more people begin to work, quite naturally (or even do job hopping,

which is characterized by professionals changing their jobs frequently and voluntarily.) When the number of people continues to progress, they have an increased power to spend which leads to an increase in the demand for products. And when demand for products rises and the supply cannot keep up, as one would expect, the average prices rise, giving birth to inflation. So, how does the government respond to inflation?

By increasing interest rates thereby limiting consumers’ spending ability. This vicious cycle continues to go on, and its effects can be seen all around us. Things as simple as groceries, are at an all-time high. According to Canada’s Food Price Report for 2023, the average family of four in British Columbia will see an increase of $1065 CAD in their grocery bills for the year in the next few months. Another fact that has been injected into our lives by giant retail stores is “shelflation”; investigations into consumers complaining about their milk turning sour even before the expiration dates conclude that due to supply chain disruptions (that may

The Times of Canada | April 2023 Edition 72

shorten a product’s life), less-than-fresh food continues to be served on Wshelves. When the shelf-life is compromised and shortened, it not only affects the economy, but our health as well.

At present, no one knows when this will end– when will prices begin decreasing for once? Or when will the economy begin growing? However, till then, what we can do is hope for a better future.

Car batteries are regarded as one of the most important parts of a car. Aside from the fact that it’s what gives your car the power to run, it’s also what aids you when you’re stuck in a predicament and need your car to start up as fast as possible.

Regular car battery maintenance is very important in ensuring your car stays running at optimal levels.

Checking Battery Level

If necessary, use a voltage meter to measure the remaining charge. When necessary, give it a charge with the engine running. Finally, be sure to check the charge level often and replace the battery when it is no longer functioning.

Identifying Corrosion Buildup

Open the car hood and locate any exposed metal on the battery. If present, look for any green or white

A Quick Guide to Car Battery Maintenance

discoloration, which can also be a sign of corrosion. To access the battery terminals, you will likely need to remove the battery coverings. Once they are exposed, use a small mirror to observe any residue on the bottom of the posts. If corrosion is present, it should appear as a white, chalky powder.

To maintain battery connections, start by cleaning any corrosion or dirt off the terminals and posts using a damp cloth or baking soda and water paste. Then, using a wire brush, clean off any remaining corrosion on the posts.

Avoiding Overcharging

Overcharging can cause oxidation of the electrolyte and the resulting buildup of sediment, ultimately leading to reduced battery life. However, there are other dangers associated with overcharging your car battery.

It can cause rapid erosion of the plates in the battery, lead to the internal temperatures of the battery rising, and cause corrosion of the case and terminals. Check the battery regularly with a voltmeter to be sure it’s charging correctly.

Storing Your Battery Properly

If a battery is stored for an extended period, it should be recharged every two or three months. When choosing a storage location, it should be in a cool, dry environment with good air circulation, away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.

It’s also important to keep the terminals clean and regularly check the battery’s charge and water levels. If a battery is maintained correctly, it will last for a long time, saving money, time, and hassle.

What is Tension and Relaxation?

OSHO,

Please talk about tension and relaxation. When I am alert, there is a subtle tension which I need to maintain this wakefulness. It winds me up like a spring and then I feel horrible. How can I stay awake without all this tension? How to find a stillness, though busy?

being aware with day-to-day, routine actions, and while you are doing your routine actions, remain relaxed. There is no need to be tense. When you are washing the floor, what is the need to be tense? Or when you are cooking the food, what is the need to be tense?

THERE IS NOT a single thing in life which requires your tension. It is just your unawareness and your impatience.

Accept yourself.

This is the way existence wants you to be. Some trees are taller; some trees are smaller. But the smaller trees are not tense -- neither are the taller trees full of ego. Existence needs variety. Somebody is stronger than you; somebody is more intelligent than you -- but in something, you also must be more talented than anybody else.

OSHO: I will just tell a small anecdote.

One day a man from a small village in the mountains sees a tourist driving his car backwards up a narrow road towards the top of the mountain. The man stops him and says, “Why are you driving backwards?”

The tourist replies, “They told me that there is no room to turn a car around on top of the mountain.”

The man says, “I have lived here all my life. I know there is enough space to turn around.”

Half an hour later, he sees the tourist driving down again, backwards. He stops the car and says, “What are you doing now?”

The tourist replies, “You were right. There was enough room to turn around.”

Whatever I have said is simple: Start

I have not found anything -- and I have lived in all kinds of ways, with all kinds of people. And I have always been puzzled: why are they tense?

It seems tension has nothing to do with anything outside you, it has something to do within you. Outside you always find an excuse only because it looks so idiotic to be tense without any reason. Just to rationalize, you find some reason outside yourself to explain why you are tense.

But tension is not outside you, it is in your wrong style of life. You are living in competition -- that will create tension. You are living in continuous comparison -- that will create tension. You are always thinking either of the past or of the future, and missing the present which is the only reality -- that will create tension.

IT IS A QUESTION of simple understanding; there is no need of any competition with anybody. You are yourself, and as you are, you are perfectly good.

Just find your own talent. Nature never sends any single individual without some unique gift. Just a little search... perhaps you can play on the flute better than the president of the country can be a president -- you are a better flautist than he is a president.

There is no question of any comparison. Comparison leads people astray. Competition keeps them continuously tense, and because their life is empty, they never live in the moment. All they do is to think of the past, which is no more, or project in the future, which is not yet.

This whole thing drives people almost abnormal -- insane. Otherwise, there is no need: no animal goes mad, no tree needs any psychoanalysis. The whole existence is living in constant celebration, except man. He is sitting aloof, tense, worried.

A SMALL LIFE, and you are losing it and every day death is coming closer. That creates even more angst -“Death is coming closer and I have not even started living.” Most people realize only when they die that they

The Times of Canada | April 2023 Edition 78

were alive -- but then it is too late. Just live the moment.

And whatever qualities and whatever talents you have, use them to the fullest.

ONE OF THE MYSTICS in India, Kabir, was a weaver. He had thousands of followers and still he continued to weave clothes. Even kings were his followers.

The king of Varanasi asked him,

it and my soul is in it. I have poured my whole being in it. Be careful, use it with tenderness and love and remember, Kabir has woven it especially for you, Lord.”

And it was not something that he was addressing to anybody in particular -- any customer! This was his contribution. He used to say to his disciples, “What else can I do? I am doing my best: I can weave, I can sing, I can dance -- and I am immensely contented.”

And existence will be immensely enriched by your grace, by your relaxation, by your silence, by your awareness.

You will not leave the world without contributing something valuable to it. But people are always looking at others, at what others are doing -- somebody is playing the flute and you cannot, and immediately there is misery; somebody is painting, and you cannot, and there is misery.

WHATEVER YOU ARE doing, do it with such love, with such care that the smallest thing in the world becomes a piece of art. It will bring great joy to you. And it will create a world without competition, without comparison; it will give dignity to all people; it will restore their pride, which religions have destroyed.

In my whole life, I have never judged any person. If God is happy with him, why should I be worried whether he is a thief or a murderer? PerWhaps that is the function existence wants him to do. All that is needed is that he should do it with as much artfulness and as much intelligence as he can gather -with his totality.

“Master, it doesn’t look good, it makes us feel embarrassed. We can take care of you. There is no need for you to weave clothes and every week on market day, go into the market to sell your clothes. Just think of us: people laugh at us.”

Kabir said, “I can understand your problem, but I have only one talent and that is to weave beautiful clothes. If I stop doing it, who will do it? And God comes in different faces, in different bodies, to purchase clothes every week in the marketplace.”

He used to address every customer, “Lord, be very careful of the cloth. I have been weaving it, not just like any other weaver -- my songs are in

WHATEVER YOU ARE doing, if there is contentment and a feeling that this whole existence is nothing but the manifestation of godliness, that we are traveling on holy earth, that whomever you are meeting, you are meeting God -- there is no other way; only faces are different, but the inner reality is the same -- all your tensions will disappear. And the energy that is involved in tensions will start becoming your grace, your beauty.

Then life will not be just an ordinary, routine, day-to-day existence, but a dance from cradle to grave.

What is Business Liability Insurance and What Does It Cover?

For most businesses, understanding the importance of liability insurance is an essential part of staying compliant with local, state, and federal regulations. In this article, we will break down exactly what business liability insurance means and discuss why investing in a policy might be necessary for your organization.

As a business owner, CEO, vice president, or senior manager, you are likely aware of the need for liability insurance. After all, you want to be sure that your company is well-protected against the potential risks that come with running an organization and engaging in different types of activities. But what exactly is business liability insurance?

Commercial or business liability insurance is a type of insurance policy that provides financial protection for businesses if they are sued for causing third-party property damage or injuries due to their negligence or accidental mistakes. Coverage includes compensatory damages awarded to the plaintiff and any legal fees incurred as a result of the lawsuit, regardless of the outcome. This type of insurance is especially important in cases where businesses may be held liable for large amounts of money due to negligence or other errors made by their staff or themselves.

Business liability insurance generally covers professional liability, bodily injuries, property damages, or other material losses. In addition, it can also include

other forms of coverage depending on the nature of the business, such as:

1. Product liability: It safeguards businesses from legal action related to harm resulting from their products, whether it is due to an issue in the design, manufacturing process, how it was marketed, or lack of safety warnings. It covers any costs associated with claims that may arise from faulty components and incorrect labeling.

2. Management liability: It offers comprehensive coverage to protect executives from a wide range of potential liabilities, including allegations of misrepresentation, violations of laws or regulations, wrongful terminations, and failure to act in the best interests of the company.

3. Pollution liability: This insurance provides financial protection for potential third-party injuries, damages to property, and environmental damage that may arise from either a gradual or sudden event occurring at the insured job site. This coverage includes fees associated with civil fines, penalties, and assessments, as well as costs incurred in emergency response and clean-up efforts due to pollution. In addition to on-site occurrences, it also offers coverages for transportation exposures such as loading and unloading materials.

4. Cyber liability: This Coverage provides enhanced business liability

protection that safeguards against the increasing threats associated with technology systems and customer data in the digital landscape.

Overall, commercial liability insurance is a must for businesses and organizations of all sizes. It helps to protect the business from legal claims due to negligence or mistakes made by either its staff or owners. At AMC Insurance Services, we understand that business owners need to be protected from a wide range of liabilities, which is why we offer comprehensive insurance plans tailored to your unique needs.

There are several ways to buy a car, especially with a down payment. If your credit score is low and you have no time to rebuild it, you can put money down to purchase your dream car. It does not matter if you buy a used car or a new one, down payment can improve your bad credit auto loan approval chances.

As a car buyer, there are many benefits to making an upfront payment to the dealer.

a. Get Lower Monthly Payments: When you make a down payment, the size of your loan will become smaller, and thus, your monthly payments will reduce as well.

b. Enjoy A Shorter Loan Term: A hefty down payment can lower your loan term and reduce your overall monthly costs of owning a vehicle.

c. Get Reduced Interest Amount: With

DOWN PAYMENT

The Smart Way to Buy a Car with Bad Credit

a down payment of at least 10% of the total cost of the car, you will be able to pay off your loan early and enjoy a reduced interest amount.
