Lesser-Visited Landscapes Waiting to be Discovered
Canada, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and vast expanses of wilderness, is a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. While iconic destinations like Banff National Park and Niagara Falls draw millions of visitors each year, there are countless lesser-known landscapes scattered across the country that offer equally awe-inspiring experiences. In this article, we embark on a journey to explore some of Canada’s lesser-visited landscapes, from rugged coastlines and remote islands to pristine lakes and majestic mountains.
1. Haida Gwaii, British Columbia: Tucked away off the coast of British Columbia, Haida Gwaii, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, is a remote archipelago renowned for its lush rainforests,
ancient Haida villages, and rich Indigenous culture. Home to Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, Haida Heritage Site, this pristine wilderness offers opportunities for kayaking, hiking, wildlife viewing,
and cultural immersion. Visitors can explore towering totem poles, hike through old-growth forests, and witness the vibrant marine life along the rugged coastline.

MAYOR BRENDA LOCKE City of Surrey
What Being Canadian Means: Embracing Values and Diversity
I am very fortunate and proud to live in a country that celebrates the freedom, rights, and dignity of the individual. Equally important is how Canada embraces its diversity. Canada is a shining example to the world of how people of different races and religions can come together to live in harmony. Surrey is reflective of Canada in this way, with its rich cultural tapestry, vibrant neighborhoods, and strong sense of community, where individuals from all walks of life can thrive and contribute to the city’s unique identity.
A Journey of Service: From MLA to Mayor
My motivation has always been to serve the people and make a difference in bettering their everyday lives. First and foremost, I am a mom and a nana, and I love this city that I have called home for over 40 years. When I was an MLA, I was the
Minister of the then-new Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions. My experience in that portfolio has never left me, and it continues to be a core value of mine to help those who need it most. After my time in Victoria, I served as a board member of the Surrey Urban Mission, which allowed me to focus my efforts on helping those in my community.
Now as Mayor, social challenges remain a big priority for me. I am also a firm believer in meeting and talking to people face to face. I can hear firsthand what matters to them the most, what is working, and what is not. I take the good and the bad as part of life in public service, and, frankly, I get energized when I am out talking with our residents and business owners. I am inspired by Surrey’s residents and value meeting with them. Equally important is fiscal responsibility and ensuring long-term prosperity. This Council is focused on balanced growth and development with responsible
stewardship, delivering a vibrant, livable city that meets the needs of all citizens.
Significant Achievements: Building Trust and Infrastructure
A major reason why I ran for Mayor was to bring back transparency, trust, and civility to City Hall. Now there is only one door to Surrey City Hall—no back doors, no side doors, no doors for those with special privilege. There is no question that those basic values were lacking under the previous
administration, and it was time to restore the people’s confidence in their City Council. One of the first acts of the new Council was to bring back the Ethics Commissioner and to empower the office to operate independently, free from political interference. When I was an MLA, I was involved in securing funding to bring SFU to Surrey and working to demonstrate to the university the benefits of establishing a campus in what would become the downtown core. RCMP’s E-Division Headquarters being built in Surrey was another development I was involved with. These projects have greatly benefited Surrey.
Motivation and Inspiration: Centered on People
My motivation and inspiration come back to the people I am elected to serve. In simple terms, I love people, hearing their stories, and seeing where and how the city can make their lives better. People are at the center of all my considerations, whether it be cutting red tape, building new public amenities, or providing services, all while keeping the tax rate as low as possible and balancing the budget. From the plans we are developing to the work we are doing now to build an even better Surrey, that is what motivates me to move forward.
Guiding Values: Integrity and Service
This decade has been challenging, from the global pandemic to the steep rise in inflation. The economy has put pressure on families, businesses, and the City itself. How we impact our residents are guiding factors for me, and I am always focused on how we can better serve our residents, especially children and youth.
Community Initiatives: Enhancing Livability and Amenities
So much of what we do has a direct impact on our residents. Surrey has some of the best public amenities in the Metro region, and Council is committed to maintaining and building more parks, rinks, and recreation centers. Currently, work on the new $310M Newton Community Centre is underway, and a new Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex with three sheets of ice will be completed by next year. Our Council expanded the long-overdue ice arena from two to three sheets of ice to meet the true needs of the community. These projects are part of our ambitious $716M Five-Year Capital Program and are a testament to our commitment to ensuring Surrey remains a dynamic and thriving community for generations to come. Providing recreational opportunities is particularly important for our young people, as Surrey is home to the largest youth population in the province.
From the enhancement of green spaces to the improvement of major facilities, these recommendations are tailored to elevate Newton into a thriving and vibrant community that we can all take pride in.
Future Goals and Aspirations: Building a Better Surrey
In the short term, it is time to review how the City communicates with the diverse population we have in Surrey. I have asked Staff to review our policy so we can update it to include more translated materials in our City to ensure that everyone is included and involved. We have also hired a Multicultural Media Lead to assist us in better reaching our citizens.
Community beautification and revitalization is another big focus for our Council. One of the first initiatives we launched was Focus Newton, a comprehensive action plan focused on enhancing livability in Newton.
Creating a variety of new housing stock is, of course, top of mind for Surrey as well. We are working hard to further reduce permit timelines for single-family homes to see housing built faster. We are also focused on keeping development fees as low as possible. Time is money, and I want developers to be able to pass on those savings to consumers.
With such a large trucking industry in Surrey, Council has made it a priority to implement much-needed truck parking. We know the need is great, and we will be adding to the truck parking inventory in our city. Council has
also approved $300M to improve Surrey’s transportation network. A lot of this work is long overdue and is essential with the rapid growth we are experiencing in Surrey.
Over the mid to long term, we are planning for Surrey with a population of one million people. We have set a goal of ensuring one job for every working resident in Surrey by the time we reach that milestone. While it is a tall order, it also reflects the rising prominence of Surrey as it transforms into a vibrant and thriving metropolis. Whether it’s the creation of new entertainment districts, new neighborhoods, or new transportation hubs, the work to achieve those goals has to begin now.
Equally pressing is how Surrey has fallen woefully behind in new transit, health care facilities, schools, and other large infrastructure projects. In light of this ongoing shortfall, I have asked staff to review how Surrey’s share of provincial and federal infrastructure funding compares with Vancouver and similar-sized cities across the country. It is no secret that Surrey has not received its fair share, and I hope this audit will shine a light on how acute the infrastructure deficit is in what will soon be the largest city in the province.

Embracing Canadian Dreams:
Canada is a country where one can have big dreams. A nation that truly believes in justice, equality, and fairness for all, no matter where you come from or the color of your skin. It’s a country with unlimited opportunities for people. Like many other immigrants, I came to this country looking for a better life. Now, I see that many in my community have gone from seeking jobs to becoming employers, providing jobs to hundreds of people. There were times when rules were made particularly against us, but now we are lawmakers. We have members in the legislature, cabinet, and even our own speaker. This is a country of opportunities. I came here and became an MLA after eight years, and the people of this province have elected me five more times. This is bigger than what I could have dreamed of.
A Journey of Service and Advocacy
I am the son of a farmer from Punjab, India, born in my village Deon. I went to school in my village and played basketball in college, becoming a member of the University team and the All-India University team. Later on, I finished my master’s in philosophy and even represented my country in Basketball. Subsequently, I taught philosophy at a college and worked as an assistant director of Youth Services within the provincial government in Punjab. I then migrated to Canada, completed a master’s in public administration from the University of Manitoba, and moved to Surrey, where I started working at PICS (NGO) and quickly became active within my community. When I first moved here, I was surprised and appreciated that the medical system in Canada was completely free, and the education
system was affordable. I learned that these policies were advocated for by the NDP (New Democratic Party), so I became a member. When Gordon Campbell and the BC Liberal Government took office and began cutting education, healthcare, and other services, I decided to be a voice for my community and run for office. In 2004, I was first elected, and ever since, I have done everything possible to stand up and fight for the issues that matter most to them.
Advocacy Triumphs: Overcoming Challenges for Community Progress
My most significant professional achievement is continuing and sustaining my efforts to serve the people of British Columbia through my role as MLA and beyond. I accepted the welfare challenge to tell the story of the most vulnerable people in the province, leading to
significant changes to improve their lives. I also fought for container truckers, most of whom are from visible minorities, and made significant improvements in their lives. I introduced and passed a motion on farm housing and worked with the community to make the necessary changes. David Eby asked me to look after the Trade file as the Minister of State for Trade, and I worked hard to ensure our trade is the best in the history of this province. Despite high inflation, interest rates, and global economic challenges, we have maintained the best economy in the country with the lowest unemployment rate, highest GDP growth, and highest credit rating.
Finding Inspiration Amidst Challenges
Life is a journey, and there will be challenges no matter what path you are on. I believe you can only succeed if you continue walking on your path rather than fighting with minor problems during the journey. Sometimes you will face walls in the middle of your journey. Unsuccessful people stop at these walls, but successful people find a way over them and keep moving. Successful people have
why they are successful. The key is to deal with challenges right away and keep moving on your path. I have faced many challenges in my life, whether in education, basketball, or politics. The key is to focus on your end goal.
Guiding Values: Serving the Community with Integrity
As an MLA, my duty is to serve the people of my constituency. The most important principle for me is to listen carefully to understand the issues that matter most to my community. After listening, I give my constituents the best advice based on my experience as an MLA. If they need appointments with the city or a Member of Parliament, we help connect them. Listening, helping, and finding a way to resolve issues are my guiding principles. I work with the community to understand their issues and expectations and fight for them until a solution is found, even if it takes time. My work involves listening to people, finding creative ways to serve them, and resolving their issues.
Community Advocacy: Building a Brighter Future
Surrey is the fastest-growing city in not just the province but the whole country. We need infrastructure to support the growing population. I have been working to ensure good public transit options, particularly the extension of the SkyTrain from Surrey to Langley, which goes through Fleetwood on Fraser Highway.
I am pleased that the SkyTrain will be built two years ahead of schedule, providing affordable provide affordable transportation
options for people and allowing us to build affordable housing around the stations. I have also been advocating for a new hospital in Surrey since 2004. The previous government did nothing, but the BC NDP government has committed to building it, and construction is underway. The hospital will be stateof-the-art. Additionally, Surrey lacks a medical school, which is crucial for training more doctors and nurses. The BC government is now building a medical school in Surrey to improve healthcare by training more medical professionals.
Vision for the Future: Building a Better Tomorrow
I have committed my life to serving the people of British Columbia. I want to see the SkyTrain completed so that the people of Surrey-Fleetwood have affordable transit options. I want to see more housing built in our communities, so everyone has an affordable place to live. I also want to see the new hospital up and running, providing state-of-the-art cancer care and general treatment, particularly for people in Cloverdale, Panorama, and Fleetwood. I want to keep being able to fight for the people of Surrey-Fleetwood, and all British Columbians.
What does being Canadian mean to you?
Reflecting on my Canadian identity, it encapsulates the privilege of residing in a democratic nation that cherishes diversity and inclusivity, wherein fundamental freedoms are upheld for all citizens, distinguishing it from many regions globally.
Can you provide a brief overview of your background and what initially inspired you to pursue your current career path?
My professional journey stems from personal experiences as an immigrant, navigating the challenges of integration into a new culture. These experiences fostered a commitment to facilitating others’ assimilation processes and fostering community cohesion.
Having worked in the financial sector
SATBIR SINGH CHEEMA
CEO & President
Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society
for a few years, I felt a genuine desire to contribute positively to the lives of others at a community-based level. My networking skills, creative thinking and collaborative nature aided my transition into the nonprofit sector, ultimately leading me to Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society. My genuine desire to move into the non-profit sector allowed me to get a first-hand glimpse of the gaps in services that needed to be filled in the community.
Joining the Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society in 1998 marked a pivotal moment, aligning my aspirations with a platform to address societal gaps.
What has been your most significant professional achievement to date, and what impact did it have on your
community or industry? What obstacles did you face, and how did you overcome them?
Serving as the President and Chief Executive Officer of PICS Society since 2017 has been the apex of my career. Witnessing the society’s exponential growth in personnel, budget, and projects underscores the impactful strides made in serving the South-Asian community nationwide. Over the past 6-7 years, the society experienced tremendous growth with the number of employees increasing from 110 to 300, operational budget increased from $7+ million to 23+ million and number of projects from 20 to 60+. Moreover, the geographical reach of PICS has expanded across British Columbia and to other provinces. It is a privilege and honour to lead PICS Society, which has become the largest non-profit organization
serving the South-Asian community across Canada.
While overseeing initiatives like the Guru Nanak Diversity Village Project (a 125-bed long term senior’s care facility), encountering challenges and risks was inevitable. Yet, through collaborative efforts and unwavering resolve, we navigated all challenges, emerging stronger and more united. I am happy to report that the groundbreaking ceremony is happening sometime in the summer of 2024.
We also experienced some minor issues due to our incredibly rapid growth including a lack of physical space for staff. However, we used our ingenuity in redesigning and maximizing our head office to accommodate our new hires and leased additional office space.
I am also very humbled and grateful to have received the following awards:
• Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal for Community Service in 2012
• ‘Safe Communities’ Award under the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Awards by the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General in 2021
• Community Crusader Award at the Darpan Extraordinary Achievement Awards in 2021
• Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award for Outstanding Service to the Community in 2022
How do you stay motivated and inspired in your work, especially during difficult times?
Having faced some challenges over the past few years I have sought support and comfort from the people in my life like my family and colleagues. Cultivating a positive mindset has allowed me to focus on the positive aspects in my life. I also make sure to take care of my mental well-being by reading inspirational literature and resources along with surrounding myself with positive people.
What are the core values or principles that guide your work and decision-making process?
My decision-making process is reinforced by integrity, ensuring transparency, fairness, and ethical conduct in all organizational affairs. Accountability to stakeholders, including the board and funders, remains paramount in guiding strategic decisions. Even if I think one of my decisions won’t make me popular with my colleagues, I won’t compromise if I feel the decision is in the best interests of the organization. What community or social initiatives are you currently involved in, and why are they important to you?
Columbia’s largest job fair, attracting over 75 exhibitors and 6000+ attendees. Other initiatives like Drug & Gang Free Car Rally & Walk, Family Circle, Welcome Centre for International Students, Employability Training Centre are some more initiatives that PICS Society is working on. Moreover, tirelessly collaborating with Fraser Health Authority, BC Housing, and the Ministry of Health for the Guru Nanak Diversity Village project is really important at the moment. PICS Society is always looking forward for expanding services to help senior citizens, youth-at-risk, women facing domestic violence, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable section of the society.
In 2005, we initiated the annual
Looking forward, what are your future goals and aspirations, both professionally and personally? Looking ahead, my professional aspirations encompass furthering organizational growth, advancing community-centric initiatives, and solidifying PICS Society’s position as a beacon of service excellence. Personally, fostering meaningful relationships, nurturing personal growth, and contributing to societal betterment remain enduring goals.
Embracing Canadian Identity
For me, being Canadian means being part of a diverse, equitable, welcoming country. We are so fortunate to have a robust democracy that upholds different voices and perspectives. Everyday, we get to see cultures mix and blend, and it is so wonderful to be part of a country that is always trying to help, always trying, however imperfectly, to embrace differences.
KIM SAVAGE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
SURREY
FOOD BANK
Career Origins and Inspirations
I have spent my career working with social purpose organizations and not-for-profits. My first ‘real job’ was working with Union Gospel Mission in the downtown eastside of Vancouver. Our programs served people facing addiction and homelessness. In that role, I developed a meaningful awareness that people rarely “choose” such a difficult life.
Addiction, homelessness, and food insecurity are often rooted in generational and life-altering abuse and trauma that results in folks facing really tough circumstances. I have carried that lesson with me, knowing there is no “other.” We are all vulnerable and we are all potentially one event away from a very different reality. I have spent my career trying to be part of organizations and projects that make the city, the province, our country, and the world, a little more equitable and a little more hopeful. I try to bridge the gaps.
Most recently, I served as HOPE International Development Agency’s Executive Director where I oversaw work with people facing extreme poverty in 16 developing countries, focused on clean water systems, food security, and livelihoods. Newly starting as Surrey Food Bank’s Executive Director (June 5, 2024), the intent is to bring those global perspectives back into our local community as we strive to address food insecurity for so many in the city of Surrey.
Defining Professional Milestones
A hallmark of my career has been to develop teams that make a difference. I have been incredibly fortunate to work with numerous people who have mentored me to lead well. When I look at what is accomplished, it is always the team of people banding together, working on a shared purpose that I am most proud of. No one can ever say they did something on their own. There is always a group of people coming together to champion the activities.
Success is almost always shared success that is a result of lots of hard work from dedicated individuals centered on a shared vision for something to be better.
In terms of obstacles, I sustained a skull fracture and serious concussion while working in DR Congo 18 months ago. When that happened, one realizes how fragile their own health and capacity is. During that time of recovery, I relied on my team who was incredibly capable and unified to continue the work in the absence of my leadership. I was so proud and so grateful for the way they were able to stay true to the mandate of our work, stay together, and keep going.
Finding Motivation and Inspiration
When I get discouraged, I go spend time with people who are the helpers. I find someone who is doing something hard but is finding a way
to find success. I listen to them, I soak in their advice and their inspiration. Then I return to my own challenges with a mindset shift and some extra motivation.
Guiding Principles and Core Values
A core value is always putting people first. In every decision, people are the lens through which I first evaluate a situation or make a decision. I see the contributions, contradictions, and considerations through a peoplefirst lens. Individuals are complex, unique, and sometimes complicated, but the work is to find and stay on common ground. Working to steward relationships and build bridges well with integrity, honesty, tenacity, and equity – those are my work values.
Commitment to Community Initiatives
Food insecurity and affordable
housing are my current activities. They are basic human rights and they are foundational for people to not just survive, but flourish. Without nutrition and without shelter, it is nearly impossible to work and make a living, pursue education, or have time to nurture social connections. Housing and food are the cornerstones of life.
Vision for the Future
Having just started with Surrey Food Bank, my main personal, community, and professional goal is to grow the Food Bank to meet the needs of the city of Surrey. We need a food bank that is scaling to the size of our community. We also need to look at how we can dovetail other needed services with food security to help folks step out of the cycles of poverty and reliance on social supports.
My Definition of Being Canadian
Being Canadian means getting to live in the best country on the planet. We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful and welcoming place. People from all around the world come here to build better lives for themselves—and we all benefit from the diversity and skills they bring with them. Canada is special place, not because we are perfect, but because we are always striving to make progress. We’re at our best when we reject hate and work together in common purpose, to focus on what matters for people and to help each other succeed.
My Upbringing and Career Inspiration
I was raised in a suburban middleclass home. My mom was a teacher. My dad was a lawyer. From a young age, we were taught to value commitment to family, community,
HON. DAVID EBY PREMIER BRITISH COLUMBIA
and helping the less fortunate. That’s why, when I became a lawyer myself, I decided to start my career on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside – defending the homes of some of the poorest people in our province from exploitation. I realized that while I could make a small difference fighting to delay homelessness or win a small settlement for tenants, I couldn’t change the laws that were stacked against people and in favour of powerful interests. And that’s why I decided to pursue a life in politics: to help protect people against the powerful.
Proudest Achievements and Overcoming Challenges
Former Premier John Horgan trusted me with some of the biggest and most complex issues in our government. I’m proud of the work we did together to take on powerful interests and get good things done for people. Getting the influence of
big money out of B.C.’s elections was key. I’m proud that we took on opioid manufacturers and delivered a first-of-its-kind settlement to hold corporations accountable for the overdose crisis. Our team put out the dumpster fire at ICBC and reduced the amount people pay for car insurance by hundreds of dollars a year, I’m always glad to hear about how that supported so many families and businesses.
Staying Motivated and Inspired by My Family
My family keeps me motivated and inspired. They’re a daily reminder of why I’m in this fight. I want every kid in this province, including my kids, to have the same chance to build a good life that I had growing up. I want them to see good careers options out there and be able to get the training to seize those opportunities. I want them to be able to afford to rent or buy a home
in a community they love. I want them to be able to rely on public services, like health care, when they need it. It’s what I want for all British Columbians. My wife Cailey was a nurse who trained to become a family doctor. Through her, and so many amazing healthcare workers, I see the challenges and strains in our health care system after the pandemic—and am more motivated than ever to fix it for everyone.
Core Beliefs That Shape My Decisions
The last few years have reinforced what I always believed: we’re strongest when we work together and have people’s backs. There are politicians out there that think we would be better off if governments let people fend for themselves. But that would only make our biggest challenges worse and make things harder for people. It would mean cuts to services people rely on, inviting speculation back into the housing market, and paying more in added fees, fares, and tolls. We can’t afford that approach. I believe government can and must be a force for good in people’s lives. I believe government should be on your side and focused on your priorities—like reducing costs, building more homes people can afford, and strengthening health care.
Community Involvement and Its
Importance to Me
This job keeps me pretty busy—and one of the best parts of being premier is the opportunity to meet so many people who are making a difference in their communities. I’ve been to dozens of events in all corners of this province and continue to be amazed by the kindness and generosity of British Columbians, especially in tough times. I think of members of the Tk’emlùps te Secwèpemc First Nation who opened their homes and hearts to people fleeing wildfires. Or the owners of a small restaurant in Hope who served breakfast to people who were stuck when floodwaters washed away sections of the highway. It is this warmth and compassion that gives me so much hope for the future of this beautiful place, and I will continue to support innovation and cooperation that makes a difference for people and helps them thrive.
optimistic about the future of British Columbia. We have abundant natural resources and leading-edge technology and affordable clean energy. We are a gateway to growing markets in the Asia Pacific. But our biggest strength is our people. British Columbians are hardworking, highly skilled, and we have a strong culture of entrepreneurship and innovation. After all, it is the people of B.C. who rebuilt highways after flooding and kept kids learning in schools in difficult circumstances, and who are at the forefront of growing a stronger, cleaner economy. My goal as premier is to continue doing everything I can to support people and make sure they can build a good life for themselves and their families right here in our province.
My Vision and Aspirations for the Future

When I first came to Canada, I worked in foundries and sawmills. After some experiences with racism, my union, the IWA, encouraged me to get involved in the labour movement. I soon became an activist, where I
HON. HARRY BAINS

was involved in organizing workers, negotiating collective agreements, and resolving disputes. This is where I realized the importance of politics on human rights and the lives of workers.
I found that my values aligned with the New Democratic Party, so I became involved in the Surrey-Newton BC NDP. Before entering politics, I served as a Table Officer and Vice President of the BC NDP. In 2005, with the encouragement of my supporters and friends, I decided to put my name forward and was fortunate enough to get elected. I continued to run in 2009, 2013, 2017, and
2020. Finally, in 2017, we formed government! I was fortunate that our Premier at the time, John Horgan, asked me to serve as the Minister of Labour, giving me the opportunity to bring about the change I had been advocating for.
As the MLA for Surrey-Newton and as Minister of Labour for British Columbia, I have prioritized improving workplace safety and supporting workers’ rights. Our efforts have resulted in the implementation of robust and effectively enforced workplace safety programs, ensuring that all injured or ill workers are treated with dignity and respect and are
One of the first things I did when becoming Minister of Labour is raised the minimum wage, for 16 long years some of our lowest paid workers in the province were stuck at a wage freeze. Through steady, predictable increases, we have successfully raised the minimum wage to become the highest among all provinces in Canada, providing an opportunity for individuals to move out of poverty and earn a decent livelihood.
Recognizing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we introduced five permanent paid sick days for all workers and granted five paid days for those affected by domestic and sexual violence. These measures aim to provide financial stability during illness and difficult times, leading to higher wages, improved affordability, and enhanced protections for all. We did face some challenges regarding our efforts to raise the minimum wage and provide more rights for workers. Some argued that these changes would hurt businesses, especially small businesses. However, we have worked to support businesses, through initiatives such as lowering the small business tax rate by 20% and raising the threshold for Employer Health Tax from $500,000 to $1,000,000.
As an MLA and a minister, it is important to be able to make decisions that align with the values I believe in. Progress can sometimes be slow, but it is crucial to keep working towards bringing about positive changes that benefit British Columbians and promote equality, inclusivity, and better working conditions. I find it inspiring to get to collaborate with my colleagues in government to identify opportunities for positive change. Most of all, what really motivates me is seeing the impact of our decisions on our communities. Seeing the smiles on people’s faces or the tears of joy when they experience improvements in their working conditions, witnessing that we’re making a meaningful difference keeps me going.
With my background in labour activism before engaging in politics, the core values that guide my decision-making process are justice for all, equality, and inclusivity.
It’s important for us to root out systemic racism. I am working with my colleagues to identify and rectify systemic racism within government for positive change because everyone should have equal opportunities without facing roadblocks. In addition to this, the economy is evolving,
and workplaces are changing. For example, ride-hailing companies, food delivery services, app-based companies, and their workers are part of this shift. We are deeply involved in ensuring that these workers have basic minimum rights that all workers in BC enjoy today. Regardless of the sector you work in or your immigration status, if you are working in British Columbia, you should have the same rights and protection as all workers.
Looking forward, I am committed to continuing my advocacy for workers’ health and safety. As a Member of the Legislative Assembly, our government’s focus is to make life more affordable for all British Columbians, ensuring that everyone benefits from a growing economy and feels a sense of belonging within their communities. It is important that workers feel valued and respected and that their health and safety are protected. As a society, we must work to eliminate racism and remove obstacles that hinder people’s progress. We need to foster a system that allows individuals to be true to who they are and make British Columbia and Canada a better and more equal place for all.
HON. RAJ CHOUHAN
Speaker of the Legislative Assembly British Columbia
All my life, the values of equity, fairness, and respect have been at the core of who I am. Arriving in Canada in 1973, I felt at home because my core values are also Canadian values. Canadians take care of each other. Still, I knew then (as I know now) that as a society we could (and can) do a better job of taking care of our most vulnerable citizens. This is a great country, but it can be an even greater one.
To me, being a Canadian means living my core values in pursuit of making this country the absolute best it can be. That means standing up to racism and discrimination. It means speaking up for those who don’t have a voice. And it means protecting universal healthcare, quality public education, fair wages, good jobs, and reduced daycare fees. It also means working together on innovative solutions in the face of complex problems like the housing crisis because everyone deserves a safe and warm place to live.
Growing up in India, I was drawn to social justice work, joining the student union as soon as I was able. Reasonable study schedules, class sizes, and course loads never felt radical to me; they just made sense.
Early on, I learned the power of organizing for systemic change—I understood the power of the collective. When I arrived in Canada and saw the dangerous and exploitative conditions under which crop pickers—most of whom were immigrants—were working, I knew I had to speak out. This advocacy led to the founding of the Canadian Farmworkers Union, where I served as president.
For nearly two decades, I was the Director of Bargaining at the Hospital Employees Union, securing better working conditions and wages for our hospitals’ most vulnerable workers. This job was also a vocation. Since 2005, as an MLA, my focus has been to ensure that government hears the priorities of the people who live in Burnaby. It is the privilege of my lifetime to serve my community in this way.
In 2020, I was made Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of British
Columbia, a role I continue to hold. Soon after assuming the position, I realized I am the first person of South Asian heritage to ever fulfill the role of Speaker in any parliament in Canada. It was an emotional realization. Since arriving in Canada over 50 years ago and seeing firsthand the discrimination faced by South Asian and Chinese farmworkers, to co-founding the BC Organization to Fight Racism, to championing the reestablishment of the BC Human Rights Commission, this milestone is about far more than me as an individual. It is about our country as a whole and the values of equity, fairness, and respect. Representation matters, and this was and is an indication to South Asian immigrants and descendants from coast to coast to coast, that we belong. We are as Canadian as our next-door neighbors.
I am inspired by the people of Burnaby. The reality of working as a Member of the Legislative Assembly is that while I share in the joys and
triumphs of fellow community members, it is when hard times arise that they need me at my best, loudest, and most innovative. It is a responsibility I take very seriously. I am also inspired by today’s young people. Recently, I was asked to judge an art contest for students across the province—the theme was ‘What Democracy Means to Me’. The entries brought me to tears. So many talented, thoughtful artists submitted colorful drawings expressing the reasons they value a democratic society. Their clarity is encouraging.
I am guided by one of the very first observations I made upon arriving in this country: Canadians take care of each other. As Tommy Douglas, the father of universal healthcare in this country once said, “The only test of our character that really matters is how we look after the least fortunate among us.” I always weigh decisions by asking myself: Who wins in this situation? Because most of the time, the answer should be everyone.
Plan for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. It outlines the steps we will take as an institution to make the Legislative Assembly a more welcoming place for First Nations. It is the first Plan of its kind in Canada, and I know legislatures in other jurisdictions are looking to BC as a leader on this front. Now that the spring session of the Legislature has adjourned, I am looking forward to spending the summer out in the community, catching up with constituents and hearing what’s on their minds.
Professionally, I am pleased to be putting my name forward for re-election as the NDP candidate for this area in the upcoming fall election.
Last month, I was honored to table the first-ever Reconciliation Action
I am so proud of the work we’ve done together—most recently, the government’s funding commitment for phase 2 of the Burnaby hospital and 1,500 new homes in the area by 2026. Personally, in the upcoming campaign, I hope to knock on more doors and meet more new people than ever before. It’s in conversations with neighbors that I am continually reminded that as Canadians, there is more that brings us together than divides us.
Happy Canada Day
What does being Canadian means to you?
Being Canadian to me means celebrating the multiculturalism, freedom, and the spirit of cooperation and community that our nation offers. We Canadians are known for our politeness, humility, and friendliness. We value equality, fairness, and social justice, striving to create a society where everyone has opportunities to thrive. Canadians also have a strong connection to nature and outdoor activities, appreciating the country’s vast landscapes and wilderness. As a government official, I am proud to uphold these values, ensuring that Canada remains a welcoming, just, and progressive nation for all its citizens and future generations.
Tell us about your background and what initially inspired you to pursue your current career path? My background is rooted in activism and advocacy for social justice causes. As the MLA representing Surrey – Green Timbers, I am privileged to serve the constituents of my riding, alongside fulfilling my duties as British Columbia’s Minister of Education and Child Care. My journey towards this career path was initially sparked

by a deep-rooted commitment to addressing systemic injustices.
Throughout my career, I have been actively involved as both a trade-unionist and an activist, championing causes such as human rights, gender equality, women’s empowerment and the empowerment of marginalized communities. Prior to my election as an MLA in 2017, I served as the staff National Representative for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), where I gained invaluable experience in advocating for workers’ rights and social welfare. Additionally, my background in psychology and counseling has equipped me with a strong understanding of the complexities surrounding social issues and human behavior. Above all, my dedication to creating a more equitable and inclusive society is fueled by my role as a mother to two remarkable children and my partnership with a journalist and fellow activist.
What community or social initiatives are you currently involved in and why are they important to you?
I am currently involved in several key initiatives. These include enhancing access to quality education for all children, expanding vocational training programs, and promoting inclusive education policies. I am also focused on advancing anti-racism efforts and supporting marginalized
communities. These initiatives are important to me because they foster social equity, empower individuals through education, and contribute to the overall development and well-being of our society.
What are your future goals and aspirations, both professionally, for community and personally?
My future goals and aspirations are deeply intertwined with my commitment to serving my community and nurturing my family. I am dedicated to advancing policies that promote social justice, equality, and inclusivity within our education system and beyond. I aim to implement initiatives that modernize the curriculum, enhance educational infrastructure, and support continuous teacher development. I aspire to further anti-racism efforts and support marginalized communities in accessing educational opportunities for growth and prosperity. Ultimately, my aspiration is to leave a legacy of compassion, empowerment, and progress both in my professional endeavors and within my family.
What Being Canadian Means: Embracing Values and Diversity
Being Canadian means living in one of the best places on the globe, a nation that provides a good living, great healthcare, and a platform to celebrate and share beliefs, thoughts, and lifestyles. It is about embracing a diverse, inclusive, and multicultural society that promotes values of equality, democracy, and social justice. Being Canadian means being proud of our natural landscapes, wildlife, and resources and working

towards preserving and protecting them for future generations. It signifies upholding a sense of community and solidarity with fellow Canadians and being open-minded and welcoming to newcomers. Ultimately, being Canadian embodies the values of compassion, respect, and empathy towards all individuals, regardless of their background or beliefs.
A Journey of Public Service: From Firefighter to MLA
I have dedicated over 40 years to public service, starting with the Fire Service in Surrey, spending four years on the City of Surrey Council, and serving as the MLA in Surrey-Cloverdale for the past four years. My journey began with the firefighters’ union (IAFF Local 1271), where I became a lobbyist working with
the BC Government to secure better WCB coverage for all BC firefighters. This involvement led me to retire early from the Fire Service to run for municipal office and eventually provincial office, where I serve today.
Significant Professional Achievements: Impact and Challenges
Reflecting on my career, I find it challenging to pinpoint a single most significant professional achievement, as there are many that hold personal significance. As a union representative for Surrey Firefighters, one notable accomplishment was initiating the road to achieving presumptive cancer legislation for firefighters diagnosed with certain cancers. Currently, one of my major achievements is the development of a hospital and regional cancer center in Cloverdale. Despite the previous government selling the lands designated for Surrey’s second hospital over a decade ago, we are now seeing our vision come to fruition.
Staying Motivated: Listening and Connecting
Staying motivated and inspired,
especially during challenging times, comes from observing how people navigate their lives amid pressing issues like healthcare, housing, and affordability. My job is to listen to their concerns and connect them to the appropriate resources. One of the toughest times for my constituents was during the COVID-19 pandemic. When the harness racing season at Fraser Downs was at risk, endangering 150 direct and indirect jobs in Cloverdale, we were able to secure a grant from the BC NDP government to preserve these jobs and support the local industry.
Guiding Principles: Integrity and Service
My work and decision-making are guided by a simple principle: if it feels like the right thing to do, then it is the right thing to do. As part of the government, I strive to provide access to government services and programs for my constituents. This applies to individuals and businesses in the riding who need assistance navigating various ministries. I firmly believe that the BC NDP government works for the everyday people of BC, and this principle underpins my efforts to serve my community.
Community Initiatives: Supporting Seniors and Diversity
I am actively involved in several
community and social initiatives that are close to my heart. One such project is Zappone Manor, a seniors housing project in downtown Cloverdale that will add thirty-nine subsidized low-income rental units. The BC NDP government has funded Columbus Homes to make this project a reality. Another significant initiative is the Guru Nanak Dev Diversity Village, a 125-bed, three-storey concrete building that serves as a Community Long-Term Care Facility. This facility, operated by PICS Society under Fraser Health Authority guidelines, offers traditional South-Asian cuisines and western meals, enabling residents to communicate in their preferred language and connect with cultural and faithbased community organizations.
center, the SkyTrain extension, and related housing projects. Additionally, I look forward to the development of a new Urgent Primary Care Center, a new medical school, and more classroom spaces to address the needs of our children’s education and childcare. I am committed to working with charitable organizations like the Cloverdale Community Kitchen and City Dream Center, which provide incredible service to the Cloverdale community.
Future Goals: Continuing to Serve and Build
Looking forward, I am eager to serve the constituents of Surrey-Cloverdale for another four years. I aim to see the completion of major projects such as the hospital and regional cancer
By continuing to serve with integrity, dedication, and a deep sense of responsibility, I aspire to contribute to the ongoing development and well-being of my community and beyond.
MLA SURREY-PANORAMA
My husband and I initially came to Montreal in 1975. In 1977, with our six-month-old in tow, we traveled to the West Coast, fell in love with the beauty and all this country had to offer. There was no going back. Canada welcomed us with open arms. It is a place where people of all cultures and all walks of life come together and are welcomed into communities
with open arms. As an immigrant myself, I know that inclusion is not about tolerance; true inclusion is about celebrating both our similarities and our differences. This is what makes me proud to be a Canadian.
I enjoyed my years as a teacher; the ability to engage with the young leaders of tomorrow was a gift for me. It was important to me to encourage students to ask questions and to contribute to change. Becoming involved with the BC Teachers Federation was a natural progression for me, as I was motivated by its focus on professional development and social justice. Although I loved teaching children, I realized that in order to create and foster positive change, I needed to leave the classroom and advocate for our teachers and kids.
All my life experiences have given me the opportunity to work on what I most enjoy – helping to improve the lives of British Columbians. These
experiences are also what seemed to lead me into politics. I have always been very passionate about working closely with people in our communities, and as an activist and teacher, my focus has always been to build a more just and inclusive society.
As the President of one of the largest public-sector unions in Canada, I
advocated for teachers and children with diverse needs. I was honored to work with amazing teachers, students, parents, and communities to advocate for quality public education, which is critical for building strong communities.
Being a woman and an immigrant, I have always faced obstacles. No matter your chosen path or goals, you will face challenges along the way. In my experience, the path to success is never a straight line. You will zigzag your way through challenges and around obstacles, but with tenacity, persistence, and passion, you can achieve your goals.
My father was a progressive man who believed in an equal society for all. He instilled in me the lesson of always striving for my dreams, but also remembering my roots and giv-
ing back to my community. At a time when being a girl had all kinds of challenges, I was fortunate to receive unconditional encouragement in every adventure along my journey. As I got older, I learned to appreciate the incredible power and strength in my mother as she stood by my side during the most challenging times.
It is important for me to share my experiences and support the next generations as they navigate their own adventures. One of the most important jobs in this position is speaking with students and young people, sharing stories, answering questions, and encouraging them to pursue their passions. Providing students with real-life experiences through volunteering, helping them to learn and grow into confident, compassionate citizens has always been a priority of mine. It is critical to engage
youth, women, and the disenfranchised in having a voice to help build a better society for everyone.
Looking forward, I am incredibly proud of all the work our government has done since 2017 in childcare, education, healthcare, and infrastructure - but there is lots more to do. We have made record investments in schools and daycares. We have started building a new hospital and have committed to adding a tower to Surrey Memorial. I look forward to continuing to be a strong and passionate advocate for our community, working towards a stronger and more affordable British Columbia. Personally, I plan to make sure I remain active and healthy. I look forward to spending time with my family.

Canadian Identity: Natural Wonders and Vistas
I am one of those fortunate Canadians who, by the fortune of my birth, was blessed with all of the natural wonders and magnificent vistas of the most spectacular nation in the world. Born in Ontario’s cottage country, I am a child of sky-blue waters, seemingly endless summers, crisp clear winters, and clear star-filled skies.
Background and Career
Inspiration
My chosen career was policing – I spent 38 years in the RCMP – a
profession that I loved. I spent a lifetime bringing people together –not building walls to separate people – I was a bridge builder, not a wall builder! Because of my profile in
Surrey, I was approached to consider public service as a way to continue the path I had established in building communities.
Significant Professional Achievement
I am an optimist, and a pragmatist, and I am skilled at bringing people together. I do not see life as victories or defeats, but as a continuum of achievements for the greater good. My Government and I have made great strides that benefit everyone in the Province, from eliminating bridge tolls, to turning ICBC around, to building hospitals and schools. We have accomplished much for the Province, and the inroads that we have made will continue far into the future.
Maintaining Motivation and Inspiration
I believe that attitude is everything – if you have a good attitude, good things happen, if you have a bad attitude bad things happen. We all have the ability to control our attitude. If you think you can or you think you can’t –you’re right. I always try to maintain an upbeat positive attitude.
Core Values and Principles
I have always been guided by 5 principles or precepts that I learned many years ago while in training at the RCMP Training Academy in Regina – they are honesty, integrity, compassion, respect, and accountability.
Community and Social Initiatives
My professional life brings me into constant contact with various initiatives that allow me to contribute in a meaningful way to various causes and groups that
reflect society at large. It is a great opportunity to contribute, and it expands my reach to include groups that I may not have had prior contact with – that is very fulfilling.
Future Goals and Aspirations
Surrey is a dynamic and progressive cultural and ethnic community. We are growing and vibrant and it’s the best place in the world to live. I love being here and I want to help guide the growth so that we all grow together, in this place that we all call home!
What does being Canadian mean to you?
Being Canadian means being part of a country that prides itself on kindness, on helping our neighbours, and embracing the values that have made Canada a beacon of hope and inspiration on the world stage. It means honouring and promoting the freedoms and rights that our democracy provides and celebrating everyone who calls this land home. It means respecting our environment, standing up for human rights, and fostering a spirit of community and cooperation. Being Canadian is about striving for fairness and justice, supporting one another, and working towards a brighter future for all. As Leader of the Official Opposition here in B.C. it is a privilege and responsibility to contribute, in my small way, to the ongoing story of Canada, a land of opportunity and hope.

pursue your current career path?
I was a Cabinet Minister in the BC Liberal government from 2001 to 2012 and then worked in the private sector for a decade. The reason I came back to politics in 2022 is because of my daughters and their generation. I’m very concerned about the future of British Columbia and the path we are currently on with the highest rents and housing prices, skyrocketing crime and disorder, and a deteriorating healthcare system. I want to restore hope for a bright future and help build a B.C. where everyone can have the same opportunities for happiness and prosperity that my generation had.
What community or social initiatives are you currently involved in, and why are they important to you?
I’ve served on the boards of several non-profits including Canuck Place, Lions Gate Hospital Foundation and
the Street-to-home Foundation, an organization working to house people experiencing homelessness on the Downtown Eastside. Helping others and giving back to the community is a core value I was raised with, and that’s reflected in my work in politics as well as the many non-profits and charities I’ve worked with.
Looking forward, what are your future goals and aspirations, both professionally, for the community and personally?
I’m running to be the next Premier of British Columbia to help folks in every community throughout the province. No matter where in B.C. I go I hear the same thing, serious concerns about public safety, our crumbling healthcare system, the lack of affordable housing, and the skyrocketing costs of living. As Leader of BC United, I am putting forward credible plans to tackle these big issues and get our province back on track. Personally, I aspire to leave a legacy of positive change and to inspire future generations to continue this important work.

MLA candidate for the Conservative Party of BC in Langley-Willowbrook
Being Canadian to me means being part of a diverse, inclusive, and multicultural society. It means embracing different cultures, languages, and traditions while also promoting values of equality, democracy, and social justice. Being Canadian means upholding a sense of community and solidarity with fellow Canadians and being open-minded and welcoming to newcomers. Ultimately, being Canadian to me means embodying the values of compassion, respect, and empathy towards all individuals, regardless of their background or beliefs.
I have a background in medicine, with a focus on integrative and holistic approaches to healthcare. I was initially inspired to pursue this path after seeing the limitations of traditional Western medicine in treating chronic illnesses and promoting overall well-being after having my own personal journey as a cancer survivor. I became passionate about exploring alternative therapies and approaches that could address the root causes of health issues and promote healing on a deeper level. In terms of politics, I have always been interested in social justice and
advocating for policies that promote health and well-being for all individuals. I believe that healthcare is a fundamental human right and that our political system plays a crucial role in shaping the accessibility and quality of healthcare services.
Combining my background in integrative medicine with my passion for advocating for healthcare reform, I decided to pursue a career in both fields. I believe that integrative medicine can offer valuable insights and solutions to the current healthcare
system and that by engaging with policymakers and advocating for change, we can create a more holistic and equitable healthcare system for all.
My most significant professional achievement to date has been earning a double PhD Doctor of Integrative Medicine & Doctor of Humanitarian Services. Through my research and expertise in integrative medicine and public health, I have been able to educate and empower individuals in my community to take a holistic approach to their health and well-being. Additionally, my work has contributed to the advancement of the healthcare industry by bridging the gap between traditional and alternative medicine practices. One of the main obstacles I faced in pursuing my double PhD was the time required. Balancing my studies with work and personal responsibilities was challenging, and there were times when I felt overwhelmed. However, I was able to overcome these obstacles by creating a strict schedule, seeking support from my professors, my husband, and peers, and staying focused on my long-term goals. Additionally, my research has
helped to advance our understanding of the connections between physical and mental health and how they can be effectively addressed through integrative practices.
Staying motivated and inspired during difficult times is definitely a challenge, but I have a few strategies that help me stay on track. Firstly, I remind myself of my long-term goals and the reasons why I started this work in the first place. This helps me stay focused on the bigger picture and not get too bogged down by temporary setbacks. I also make sure to take care of myself physically and mentally. This means getting enough sleep, eating well, dedicating time to my daughters and husband, and taking breaks when needed. Additionally, I seek out inspiration from others in my field or from different industries. Reading about successful people and their journeys often gives me a fresh perspective and helps me stay motivated. I also like to attend workshops, conferences, or networking events to connect with like-minded individuals and gain new insights. Overall, staying motivated and inspired during difficult times requires a combination of self-care, goal setting, and seeking inspiration from others.
The core values that guide my work and decision-making process are integrity, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Integrity is at the forefront of everything I do. I believe in being honest, transparent, and ethical in all my dealings, both professionally and personally. This value helps me build trust with colleagues, clients, and partners, and ensures that I always strive to do the right thing, even when faced with difficult decisions. Collaboration is another key principle that shapes my approach to work. I believe that great things can be achieved when people work together towards a common goal. I value input from others, seek
out diverse perspectives, and encourage open communication and teamwork. Lastly, I am committed to continuous improvement. I believe that there is always room to grow, learn, and evolve, both personally and professionally. I am constantly seeking out opportunities to expand my knowledge, develop new skills, and adapt to changing circumstances. Overall, integrity, collaboration, and continuous improvement are the core values that guide my work and decision-making process.
I am currently involved in several community and social initiatives that are close to my heart. One initiative that I am particularly passionate about is volunteering at a local food bank. I believe that everyone deserves access to nutritious food, and by volunteering my time, I can help support those in need in my community. Another initiative that I am involved in is mentoring young professionals in my industry. I remember how valuable mentorship was for me when I was starting out in my career, and I want to pay it forward by providing guidance and support to the next generation of leaders in holistic healthcare. I find it incredibly rewarding to see these individuals grow and succeed in their careers. I am also a member of a local environmental conservation group. Protecting the environment and promoting sustainability are important causes to me, and I am dedicated to making a positive impact on our planet. Through this group, I participate in community clean-up events, tree-planting initiatives, and educational programs to raise awareness about environmental issues. These community and social initiatives are important to me because they allow me to give back to my community, support causes that I am passionate about, and make a difference in the lives of others.
Professionally, my goal as an Integrative Medicine doctor is to continue advocating for holistic and patient-centered healthcare practices. I aim to further integrate traditional and alternative medicine approaches to provide comprehensive care for my clients. For the community, I aspire to work towards improving access to healthcare services and promoting wellness initiatives that benefit the overall well-being of residents. I believe in the importance of community engagement and collaboration to address healthcare disparities and create a healthier environment for all. Personally, I strive to maintain a balanced life that allows me to pursue my professional goals while also nurturing my personal well-being. As an aspiring politician in the upcoming provincial election, my goal is to represent the interests of my constituents of Langley Willowbrook with the Conservative Party of BC, advocate for policies that support public health and well-being, and work towards building a more inclusive and sustainable community for future generations. I am committed to serving with integrity, transparency, and a deep sense of responsibility towards the people I aim to represent.

An occupational Therapist (OT) is a unique healthcare provider who skillfully assists individuals in overcoming challenges that hinder their ability to carry out daily functions, such as self-care, productivity, and leisure activities. Utilizing advanced skills in clinical reasoning, critical thinking, and thorough observation, OTs develop tailored therapeutic goals for each individual performance challenge. Their aim is to help individuals regain independence and improve adaptive skills to return to a productive life.
Explaining the role of a Community Occupational Therapist (COT) is multifaceted and impactful. Words are countless when defining or explaining what a COT is capable of doing!
COTs provide assistance to clients in various settings including homes, clinics, work environments, community centers, hospitals, and more, catering to individuals of all ages. Community OT demands a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s health challenges, requiring updated assessment skills, efficient observational approaches, and strong critical thinking.
COTs play a crucial role in supporting individuals involved in motor
vehicle accidents and those facing mental or physical health challenges. In these scenarios, COTs facilitate hospital discharges, provide necessary home modifications, help manage pain, and offer ongoing support to achieve functional goals through customized treatment plans.
Additionally, COTs are instrumental in aiding individuals with work-related injuries, guiding them to develop, maintain, or regain the skills required for daily living and working. This involves comprehensive assessments, tailored intervention plans, job site visits, personalized return-to-work strategies, and provision of essential equipment in home, work, and community environments.
In pediatric Community Occupational Therapy practice, COTs provide essential support to children diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, learning disorders, developmental challenges, and more, as well as their parents/ caregivers. They collaborate with health providers, school boards, and educational teams to create a multidisciplinary approach to meet children’s needs at school. When observing and treating the child at their residence and community, COT thoroughly investigates and address-
es the critical functional challenges with their activities of daily living.
Lastly advocacy and implementing client-centred approaches holds a distinctive role in COT practice, requiring practitioners to employ functional approaches to address health concerns in the community, including liaising with fee payors (mainly insurance companies) and collaborating with other healthcare providers, such as family doctors, physiotherapists, and kinesiologists, etc.

AYURVEDA’S APPROACH TO DIABETES MANAGEMENT
Diabetes mellitus, a metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels, has become a global health concern affecting millions of people worldwide. As conventional medicine continues to evolve in its approach to diabetes management, there is a growing interest in alternative systems of medicine that offer holistic solutions. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and managing diabetes. This essay explores Ayurvedic principles, treatments, and lifestyle recommendations for diabetes management, highlighting the potential benefits of integrating Ayurveda with modern approaches.
Understanding Diabetes in Ayurveda:
In Ayurveda, diabetes is known as “Madhumeha,” which translates to “honey urine,” referring to the sweet-smelling urine characteristic of the condition. According to Ayurvedic philosophy, diabetes is primarily caused by an imbalance in the body’s doshas, or bioenergetic forces, particularly the Kapha and Pitta doshas.
Kapha dosha, representing the elements of earth and water, governs stability, structure, and lubrication in the body. When Kapha becomes
imbalanced due to factors such as sedentary lifestyle, overeating, and consumption of heavy, sweet foods, it can lead to sluggish metabolism and insulin resistance, contributing to diabetes.
Pitta dosha, associated with the elements of fire and water, governs digestion, metabolism, and transformation. Excessive Pitta, triggered by factors like stress, inflammation, and spicy, oily foods, can disrupt insulin production and glucose metabolism, further exacerbating diabetes symptoms.
Ayurvedic Management of Diabetes:
Ayurveda offers a multifaceted approach to managing diabetes that encompasses dietary modifications, lifestyle interventions, herbal remedies, and therapeutic practices aimed at restoring balance to the body and promoting overall well-being.
1. Dietary Guidelines:
Diet plays a crucial role in Ayurvedic management of diabetes. Ayurveda emphasizes a balanced diet tailored to individual constitution (Prakriti) and imbalances (Vikriti). Dietary recommendations for diabetes focus on consuming whole, unprocessed foods that are low in glycemic index
(GI) and high in fiber. Fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and lean proteins are encouraged, while refined sugars, processed foods, and excessive carbohydrates are limited.
Ayurvedic dietary principles also emphasize mindful eating practices, such as chewing food thoroughly, eating in a calm environment, and avoiding overeating. Additionally, incorporating herbs and spices with anti-diabetic properties, such as fenugreek, cinnamon, turmeric, and bitter melon, into daily meals can help regulate blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity.
2. Lifestyle Modifications:
In Ayurveda, lifestyle factors play a significant role in the management of diabetes. Regular physical activity is essential for improving insulin sensitivity, promoting weight management, and enhancing overall health. Practices like yoga, brisk walking, and aerobic exercises are recommended, along with stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and relaxation therapies.
Maintaining a regular daily routine (Dinacharya) and seasonal routine (Ritucharya), including adequate sleep, hydration, and exposure to
natural sunlight, also contribute to overall well-being and diabetes management.
3. Herbal Remedies:
Ayurvedic herbs and formulations have been used for centuries to support diabetes management. Some commonly used herbs with anti-diabetic properties include:
- Gymnema (Gymnema sylvestre): Known as “Gurmar” or “sugar destroyer,” Gymnema is believed to help regulate blood sugar levels by promoting insulin secretion and reducing sugar cravings.
- Bitter melon (Momordica charantia): Bitter melon has hypoglycemic properties and is traditionally used to lower blood glucose levels and improve insulin sensitivity.
- Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum): Fenugreek seeds are rich in soluble fiber and saponins, which may help lower blood sugar levels and improve lipid profile in diabetic individuals.
These herbs are often incorporated into Ayurvedic formulations or consumed as herbal teas, powders, or supplements under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner.
4. Therapeutic Practices:
Ayurveda employs various therapeutic practices to support diabetes management and promote overall health. Panchakarma, a detoxification therapy involving cleansing procedures like Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), and Basti (enema), helps remove toxins from the body and improve metabolic function.
Abhyanga (oil massage) and Swedana (steam therapy) are used to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and enhance relaxation. These therapies not only aid in diabetes management but also support overall well-being by balancing the doshas and promoting harmony between mind, body, and spirit.
Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to managing diabetes that addresses the root causes of the condition and promotes overall well-being. By emphasizing dietary modifications, lifestyle interventions, herbal remedies, and therapeutic practices, Ayurveda provides a comprehensive framework for diabetes management that complements modern medical approaches. Integrating Ayurvedic principles into diabetes care can empower individuals to take control of their health and improve their quality of life through natural, holistic means. However, it is essential for individuals with diabetes to consult with qualified healthcare practitioners and integrate Ayurvedic therapies safely and effectively into their treatment regimen.
Your Presales Expert
The business model, created by Mayur Arora of Oneflatfee took off with resounding support from home sellers across BC; and it became the largest flat fee Real Estate brokerage in Western Canada, with accumulative value of homes sold surpassing $1.4B to date. As a result of the success Mayur achieved early on in the Real Estate space, this propelled him to the Top 1% in Sales of all Realtors® in the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board (GVR) earning him the prestigious Medallion (Top 10% in sales) and President’s Club status (Top 1% in sales) consecutively since 2010 inception.
Continuously looking to offer additional value to consumers, Mayur
saw a window of opportunity to help buyers find new residential (pre-sales) development homes. In September 2018, Mayur launched presalesbc.com, a comprehensive service specializing in finding information on all presale homes across BC. Buyers can search for properties by area, price and more - while gaining preferred Early VIP access to most presale developments before the general public.
It’s important to use a Realtor® with experience in the presale purchase. My expertise doesn’t cost my clients anything, as my commissions are paid by the Developer. As a trusted presale specialist, I have connections with many Developers who provide
my clients with front-of-the-line 1st Access when they purchase their presale home with me. I take the time to guide my clients through the process, assist with any issues that may arise and provide post care follow-up support at the time of completion.
PICKING YOUR PRESALE AND SIGNING A CONTRACT TO PURCHASE
• Once you’re comfortable with the research and confirm your decision to make a purchase, it’s time to pick the development.
• Make sure the development meets your needs in terms of space, layout and amenities that are important to your lifestyle.
• I assist my clients with reviewing and understanding the contract and getting the deal in place. I explain the language in the contract in terms you can understand (sometimes the legal verbiage can be overwhelming).
INVESTMENT POTENTIAL
• Whether you’re buying a presale
unit as a home to live in, or to use as a revenue generating rental property, it’s generally always a great investment.
• Condominium appreciation in the Metro Vancouver area is almost guaranteed.
• With immigration reaching highs previously not seen, the demand for housing continues to increase, especially in areas like Metro Vancouver.
• Buying a presale condominium now will almost certainly mean your home value has increased by the time construction is complete.
• Your home equity will continue to improve as time goes by.
• Maintenance costs will remain low for a number of years since your home will be brand new and no significant repairs or replacements should be required.
• With interest rates expected to decline over the next year or two, you’ll be able to secure a more favorable rate on your financing by the time your presale home is built.
• With a shortage of purpose-built rental properties, your rental po-
tential will continue to be good.
WHAT’S HOT IN 2024? SURREY
• With a number of presale developments popping up near King George Blvd. between 96th Avenue and the Fraser River, you’re spoiled for choice.
• Proximity to Central City Shopping Centre makes this a terrific area for all your shopping and service needs.
• Easy access to Burnaby and New Westminster makes commuting less stressful.
• South Surrey presale developments offer easy access to the White Rock waterfront, with trendy restaurants and a beachy lifestyle, without sacrificing the conveniences of everyday living.

• A number of developers are offering lower deposits, making it even easier to buy in.

3. Add Sweetener and Flavorings:

Paws and Preparation
Embarking on the Journey of First-Time Pet Parenthood
Bringing a new furry companion into your family is an exciting venture, but it’s crucial to prepare adequately to establish a nurturing environment and welcome the unconditional love of a four-legged friend. Below are some essential tips tailored for first-time pet owners to facilitate a smooth transition for their new addition to the family.
Choosing the Right Pet for Your Lifestyle
When contemplating pet ownership for the first time, it’s pivotal to select an animal that harmonizes with your lifestyle. Take into consideration factors such as your living arrangements, work commitments, and personal preferences. Research various breeds to identify one that complements your activity level, living space, and family dynamics. Some pets may necessitate more
exercise and companionship, while others may thrive independently. Additionally, be mindful of any allergies or sensitivities within your household, as certain pets can provoke allergic reactions or exacerbate asthma symptoms.
Preparing Your Home
Before welcoming your new pet into your home, ensure that the environment is conducive to their safety and comfort. Pet-proof your living space by eliminating any potential hazards and securing loose wires or cords.
Safeguard cleaning supplies, medications, and toxic plants out of reach.
Designate a cozy area furnished with a bed or crate, food and water bowls, and stimulating toys. For feline companions, equip your home with a litter box, scratching post, and secluded spots for climbing or hiding. Canine companions may require access to a fenced yard or a designated bathroom area. Employing a pet gate to restrict access to certain areas of your home during the initial adjustment period can help prevent accidents and safeguard belongings.
Establishing a Routine
Consistency is key when it comes to pet care, as animals thrive on routine. Establish a structured schedule for feeding, exercise, and bathroom breaks that aligns with your pet’s age, size, and breed. Daily walks, play sessions, or outings to the dog park may be necessary for dogs, while cats may benefit from interactive toys and vertical spaces like cat trees. Dedicate quality time each day to shower your pet with attention, affection, and mental stimulation, fostering a strong bond and ensuring their overall well-being and contentment.
Budgeting for Your Pet’s Needs
Owning a pet entails financial commitments, so it’s imperative to budget for their necessities. Consider the costs associated with food, grooming, veterinary care, vaccinations, and preventive medications. Research the average expenses linked to owning a pet of your chosen breed and factor in additional costs such as toys, bedding, and litter. Establishing a contingency fund for unforeseen veterinary bills or emergencies is advisable to mitigate financial strain.
Finding a Reliable Veterinarian
Regular veterinary check-ups and effective communication with a reputable veterinarian are vital components of responsible pet ownership. Seek recommendations from fellow pet owners and peruse reviews before selecting a provider. Ensure that the chosen veterinarian offers a comprehensive range of services encompassing preventive care, vaccinations, spaying/ neutering, dental hygiene, and emergency assistance. Consider the clinic’s location and operating hours to ensure accessibility for routine appointments and emergencies
Creating a Loving Environment
Beyond the practicalities, creating a loving and nurturing environment is essential for your new pet’s wellbeing. Patience and understanding during the initial adjustment period are crucial as your pet acclimates to their new surroundings. Allow them time to explore and become familiar with their new home at their own pace. Positive reinforcement and consistent training methods can help establish boundaries and reinforce desirable behaviors.
Socialization and Training
Socialization is key to helping your pet become well-adjusted and comfortable in various situations. Introduce them gradually to new people, pets, and environments to prevent fear or anxiety. Puppy socialization classes or obedience training for dogs can provide valuable opportunities for social interaction and skill development. Cats can benefit from enrichment activities that stimulate their natural instincts and encourage play.
Health and Wellness
Monitoring your pet’s health and well-being is paramount. Stay vigilant for any signs of illness or discomfort, such as changes in appetite, behavior, or mobility. Maintain a regular grooming routine to promote hygiene and check for any abnormalities in their coat, skin, or nails. Brushing your pet’s teeth regularly and providing dental treats or toys can help maintain their oral health. Stay up-to-date with vaccinations, parasite control, and routine health screenings as recommended by your veterinarian.
Bonding and Enjoying Your Companion
Above all, cherish the journey of companionship with your new pet. Take time to bond through daily interactions, whether it’s cuddling on the couch, playing fetch in the yard, or exploring new trails together. Engage in activities that strengthen your bond and create lasting memories. Your pet’s unconditional love and companionship will enrich your life in countless ways, making all the preparation and effort worthwhile.
Welcoming a new pet into your home is a rewarding experience that requires careful planning and commitment. By choosing the right pet, preparing your home, establishing a routine, budgeting for their needs, finding a reliable veterinarian, creating a loving environment, focusing on socialization and training, maintaining their health and wellness, and bonding with your companion, you’ll create a fulfilling and harmonious relationship that lasts a lifetime. Enjoy the journey of pet ownership and embrace the joy that your new furry friend brings into your life!
UNDERSTANDING HEAT STROKE
Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention
Heat stroke is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s core temperature rises to dangerously high levels, typically above 40°C (104°F). It is considered a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment to prevent serious complications and death.
One of the primary causes of heat stroke is prolonged exposure to high temperatures, especially in combination with high humidity. This exposure can overwhelm the body’s ability to regulate its internal temperature through mechanisms such as sweating and evaporation. Certain factors increase the risk of heat stroke, including intense physical exertion in hot weather, wearing excessive clothing, dehydration, and pre-existing medical conditions that affect heat regulation.
The symptoms of heat stroke can develop rapidly and include:
HighBodyTemperature:Core body temperature exceeding 40°C (104°F) is a hallmark sign of heat stroke.
Altered Mental State or Behavior: This can range from confusion and agitation to delirium or even loss of consciousness.
Flushed Skin: The skin may feel hot and dry, or alternatively, it may be moist with sweat.
RapidBreathing:Breathing may become rapid and shallow as the body tries to cool down.
RapidHeartRate:The heart may beat faster in response to the stress of heat stroke.
Headache: Severe headaches are common in individuals experiencing heat stroke.
NauseaandVomiting: These symptoms may occur as the body attempts to cope with the heat.
Immediate treatment for heat stroke is essential and includes:
MovingtoaCoolerEnvironment: Get the person out of the heat and into a shady or air-conditioned place.
CoolingtheBody: Use cool water,
such as applying wet towels or immersing in a cool bath, to lower body temperature. Fanning the person can also help.
Hydration: Offer water or other non-alcoholic beverages to help rehydrate the person.
Medical Attention: Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Seek professional medical help immediately, as complications such as organ damage can occur rapidly without proper treatment.
Preventing heat stroke involves taking precautions during hot weather, such as staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to high temperatures, wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and scheduling outdoor activities during cooler times of the day. It’s crucial to recognize the symptoms of heat-related illnesses early and take prompt action to prevent them from progressing to heat stroke. By staying informed and prepared, individuals can enjoy outdoor activities safely even in hot weather conditions.
The birth of a child is typically the most joyous and fulfilling experience of any parent’s life. They look at their baby’s face and ponder when they will pass through their key milestones and anticipate the celebration of their talents and achievements. They have hopes and dreams of their child’s future. The baby appears to look normal at birth until about 1218 months of age. A parent’s initial hopes and dreams can be altered when they start to see an atypical pattern of development. They start to question things like “Why is my baby not looking me when I talk to them?”, or “Why does my child not respond to his or her name?” or “Why is my child not babbling or talking yet at 12 months?” or “Why is my toddler walking on their toes?”
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or autism is one of this era’s most prevalent life-long childhood disorder from birth, with no known cause and no known cure. Every 20 minutes a child is being diagnosed with autism somewhere around the world. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM-5TR) describes autism as a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior. It is considered the most prevalent childhood

disorder in children at this time, even higher than childhood cancer, asthma or diabetes. Families have described this disorder as “the death of a typical child” because the baby appears normal until about 18 months of age when the symptoms begin to emerge. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, an alarming 1 in 50 children between the ages of 1-17 years old are diagnosed with autism in Canada. With the influx of immigration to Canada, many South Asian families are now affected by autism, but the cultural barriers and only a handful of
South Asian behaviour consultants can make it more difficult to navigate the system for diagnosis and support.
Dr. Ramen Saggu is a Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) and holds PhD in Clinical Psychology. She has been working in the field of autism for about 28 years and has trained in the United States, England, and Canada. Currently, she is the CEO of Pacific ABA Academy, a provincially recognized treatment, counselling and diagnostic center for children aged 1-18 years of age
with Autism Spectrum Disorder and related disabilities. Her selfless work and passion in the field of autism has led to many accolades and achievements.
As a South Asian woman herself married into a traditional Punjabi Sikh family, Dr. Saggu understands the culture and the barriers that can affect a family’s acceptance of a disorder of Autism. For families who are South Asian, she dedicates her time to helping families in her native tongue wanting to seek advice on the Autism Spectrum disorder. She particularly sees the emotional and financials struggles that the South Asian families face and the lack of education and awareness surrounding such a silent disorder.
“South Asian families not born and raised in the Western countries have some difficulties understanding ASD and the symptoms and often not
understanding that they did not do anything wrong to have a child with autism.” She provides parents with the necessary education in Punjabi they need to understand how to raise a child with ASD and provides therapists who speak Punjabi or Hindi to work 1:1 with the child.
“It is very important for the family to develop some unity when a child is diagnosed with Autism, rather than breaking down and isolating each other or blaming one another for a disorder that has a genetic background. Husband and wife need to be emotionally supportive and help each other throughout the grief cycle, and in-laws and extended relatives should be informed so they can help with the daily care of the child or relieve other household burdens such as housekeeping, cooking, and transportation to and from the clinics to assist the parents. I have often seen too much conflict within the family network which only affects the child and their potential progress.”
Early detection and intervention are key and with the right amount of quality therapy these children can make significant gains. Our goal is to truly help our children “reach
for the stars.” Dr. Saggu’s main goal for South Asian families is to gain awareness and acceptance of autism to make their journey easier as they raise this child.

1. Lush Greenery and Colorful Blooms:
One of the simplest ways to enhance your backyard’s aesthetic appeal is by incorporating lush greenery and vibrant blooms. Plant colorful flowers, such as petunias, marigolds, and zinnias, in flower beds, pots, or hanging baskets to add a pop of color to your outdoor space. and provide adequate sunlight to keep them thriving throughout the summer season.

Create inviting seating areas where you can relax and unwind with family and friends. Invest in comfortable outdoor furniture, such as lounge chairs, hammocks, or Adirondack chairs, and arrange them strategically to maximize comfort and conversation. Add outdoor cushions, throw pillows, and blankets for extra coziness and style. Consider incorporating a shady retreat, such as a pergola, umbrella, or canopy,
to provide relief from the sun’s rays during hot summer days.
3. Ambient Lighting:
Extend the hours of enjoyment in your backyard with ambient lighting that creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Hang string lights, lanterns, or fairy lights to illuminate outdoor dining areas, pathways, and seating areas. CAR TIRE MAINTENANCE
Ensuring Safety and Longevity
Car tire maintenance is crucial for ensuring safety, optimal performance, and extending the lifespan of your vehicle. Neglecting tire care not only compromises your safety on the road but also leads to reduced fuel efficiency and premature wear and tear. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the essential aspects of car tire maintenance to help you keep your wheels rolling smoothly.
1. Regular Inspections:
Regular inspections are the cornerstone of effective tire maintenance. Make it a habit to visually inspect your tires at least once a month. Look for signs of wear, such as uneven tread wear, cracks, bulges, or foreign objects embedded in the tread. Additionally, check the tire pressure using a reliable pressure gauge and ensure it matches the recommended levels specified in your vehicle’s manual.
2. Tire Pressure:
Maintaining the correct tire pressure is vital for safety, fuel efficiency, and overall performance. Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, which not only reduces fuel economy but also accelerates tire wear. Conversely, overinflated tires can lead to a harsh ride, uneven wear, and compromised traction. Refer to your vehicle’s manual or the placard located on the driver’s side
3. Tire Rotation:
Regular tire rotation is essential for promoting even tread wear and maximizing tire longevity. Front tires tend to wear differently than rear tires due to variations in weight distribution and steering dynamics. By rotating your tires according to the manufacturer’s recommended intervals (typically every 5,000 to 7,000 miles), you can ensure balanced wear and extend the lifespan of your tires.
4. Wheel Alignment:
Proper wheel alignment is critical for maintaining vehicle stability, steering responsiveness, and tire wear. Misaligned wheels can result in uneven tire wear, vibration, and steering issues. If you notice symptoms such as steering drift or uneven tire wear patterns, have your wheel alignment checked by a professional technician. Regular alignments, typically recommended every 12 months or whenever you replace your tires, can help prevent premature wear and ensure optimal vehicle handling.
5. Tire Tread Depth:
The depth of your tire tread directly impacts traction, especially in wet or slippery conditions. As tires wear down, their ability to grip the road
diminishes, increasing the risk of hydroplaning and loss of control. To gauge tire tread depth, use a tread depth gauge or the “penny test.” Insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing downward; if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to replace the tire.
6. Proper Tire Storage:
If you’re storing tires for an extended period, whether it’s for seasonal changes or spare tires, proper storage is essential to prevent deterioration. Store tires in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. Ideally, tires should be stored upright and stacked horizontally to avoid deformation. Keep tires away from chemicals, solvents, and ozone-generating equipment, as these can accelerate rubber degradation.
Car tire maintenance is not only about ensuring safety on the road but also about optimizing performance and extending the lifespan of your tires. By following these essential maintenance tips, including regular inspections, proper tire pressure management, rotation, wheel alignment, monitoring tire tread depth, and storing tires correctly, you can keep your wheels rolling smoothly for miles to come. Remember, a little maintenance goes a long way in preserving your vehicle’s safety and performance.
