MANJOT BAL A student par excellence M
anjot was recently awarded with Dean’s Honour Roll at Simon Fraser University. The Times of Canada spoke with her to find out more about her study plan, what inspired her and her future plans.
Q. YOU HAVE RECENTLY RECEIVED THE PRESTIGIOUS DEAN’S HONOUR ROLL, PLEASE TELL US MORE ABOUT THE RECENT RECOGNITION YOU HAVE BEEN AWARDED. A person who does above and beyond the average at Simon Fraser University receives this award. Through tremendous effort and support I was able to be bestowed with this honour. Working from 8am at my job at Mickelson and Whysall in Downtown Vancouver to going to evening classes and studying was difficult but so far it has been worth it. I aim to do much more than this award in my life but it has given me confidence that I will be able to achieve my goals. Q. WHAT ARE YOUR ASPIRATIONS? I have always been interested in many different areas of knowledge. Currently, my career aspiration is to become a Lawyer and I am working on that goal through my time at Simon Fraser University. I am doing a degree in Women’s Studies because it is critical to me that women and people of all different abilities and backgrounds get an equal and fair chance in this world. I believe that as second-generation Canadians we have the power to do that. Our parents have worked immensely hard to give us a life without struggle. As I have grown older and gotten to know more people, I am appreciative of the fact that my parents left their home country to start a new life in Canada. Furthermore, I aspire to be an inspiration to young people everywhere but specifically the South Asian Community because we need more role models to look up to! Instead of being surprised at a successful South Asian professional, it should become the norm. It should be just as likely to see a South Asian woman as a Lawyer as it is a Caucasian man. In addition, I aim to change societal expectations of women and men not only in the workforce but in our Punjabi Community. Q. WHO IS YOUR IDOL? I don’t have just one idol but two. Those two people are my parents. 8
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
We immigrated to Canada from India in 2002. We didn’t have much money, but my parents had a dream just like many other immigrants arriving now. Through hard work and big sacrifices, my parents raised me to be kind, caring, compassionate, outspoken, confident, assertive, financially conscious, and many more. I honestly cannot say enough about them. My mom is an educated woman who taught us the importance of organization, structure, and confidence. When I was younger, we didn’t just play outside, but I was asked to spell out difficult words from the newspaper so that I could improve on my spelling. Being well rounded was very important to my mom. She was the primary caregiver for us as young children and without her, nothing would have been possible. Specifically, she made us proficient in a wide range of activities from swimming to gatka, from basketball to keertan, from Bhangra to Tae Kwon Do, she tried to teach us everything. Conversely, my dad worked long nights to keep food on the table as well as ingrained in us the belief that men and women are equally deserving of respect. Currently, he has been instrumental and much more present in our lives as being a Real Estate Agent allows him to have a flexible schedule. I commend my dad for being open-minded and allowing both my brother and I to experience a lifestyle where we do not need to hide things from him or my mom. By showing each other mutual respect, patience, and kindness, my parents have role-modeled a relationship worth striving for. They both have their Master’s degrees so they have been a huge inspiration for me to do higher education. With parents as amazing as mine, I do not need to look outward for idols.
Q. WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS? Besides Law, my interests include managing my own small business as a Bhangra Instructor through @ bhangradiaries on instagram, competing at international competitions as a Bhangra dancer, volunteer with the Muskaan Foundation, and many more. I aim to grow every single day which is why I enjoy teaching. I have found through my 15 + years of doing Bhangra that the best way to learn is to teach someone else. This way I am able to identify my weaknesses and transfer my knowledge on to others. Being a Bhangra dancer taught me much more than just grace and about our Punjabi culture, but discipline as well. Just as any sport teaches one to persevere, I was able to learn this through the various Bhangra teams I have been on. This discipline also helped me to receive my black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Learning how to control one’s power is the greatest lesson of all which my Mentor: Master Thornton ingrained in me. Muskaan Foundation is an organization which focuses on getting the South Asian Community involved in Stem Cell Donation and raise awareness about Mental Health Issues. I am a strong advocate for self-care and good mental health. Slowly but surely, I believe that my generation can help trauma from previous generations to be stopped. Specifically, things like alcohol addictions, domestic abuse, and parent-child relationships. My studies have emboldened me to keep fighting for mental health and rights for women. My goal is to make changes for the way women are treated in the South Asian Community. This would include getting more women to step up in leadership positions, speak up when there is something wrong, even if there is a man or an elder who is saying it, and also to have resources so women can leave violent relationships.
Q. WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS ON YOUNG PEOPLE GETTING INVOLVED IN DRUGS AND GANGS? My thoughts are that it is preventable because many of the issues that lead young people to join gangs is mental health issues, family problems, and can specifically include how we view the young men in our community. In my Women’s Studies courses, we also learn about the impact that a certain standard of masculinity can have on men. If men are expected to be stoic, physically strong, and successful, this can hinder the process of being a human. Being a human means, we feel all the emotions. In fact, we should teach our young children to open up about their feelings and be conscious of our judgements. If we as a society focus on improving ourselves and learn to be compassionate and caring individuals, I believe that will make the whole world change. 9

the Surrey. I was first elected to a seat on Surrey City Council in 1993. During this term, I served as Chair of the Finance Committee and sat as a member of the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Library Board. I was elected in 2018 as The Mayor of Surrey. I was elected to be a messenger for the people. Our mission is very clear on what we would do if elected, and I firmly committed to carrying out each and every promise we made. I was elected to get things moving and complete. This is the reason why many of the goals has been accomplished in the first few months of my mandate. Q: IF NOT THE MAYOR, THEN WHERE YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN NOW IN YOUR LIFE? Anything I take, I work very hard, If not for Surrey’s new city hall, I might have stayed retired from politics, travelling the world to spend time with my far-flung children and grandchildren and leaving the book closed on my political career. Q: WHERE YOU SPEND YOUR MOST OF THE TIME DURING THE YEARS YOU WERE AWAY FROM THE POLITICS? During the period when I have been out of politics, I honed my skills as a Director of the Law Foundation and by helping non-profits and special agencies throughout British Columbia which includes Vancouver’s First United Church on the Downtown Eastside, deal with financial problems. Q: SURREY IS A DIVERSE CITY. LAW AND ORDER IS A MAIN CONCERN. HOW DIFFICULT WAS THE TRANSITION OF RCMP TO SURREY POLICE? A: First of all, to move 800+ police officers was really a complex task. It’s never been attempted anywhere in Canada. And, we have achieved it, We have our own Surrey Police now and we got Green light which is a big achievement. Probably, you will see officers on road in the mid of next year. However, it was achieved in mere 6 months which is unheard and never ever done in Canada and there were lot of issues. For that, I have to give credit to Counsel which is very supportive and energetic throughout. Residents were very clear during our campaign that they want safe Surrey. Though, The RCMP has served very well for over 30 years. But, they felt it’s a time to change our city’s status. We have been treated as Sub-urban in
the previous decades. Now, gone are those days. We are now a bigger city, even more bigger than Vancouver. Now, we are tenth largest city in Canada. In fact, we are fastest growing city in Canada. Q: MANY OF US HEARD ABOUT SMART DEVELOPMENT, COULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN LITTLE BIT ON THAT TOPIC? A: As housing and affordability is the main concern. Also, Surrey is so large geographically. That’s the reason people wanted better transportation, so we worked on Sky Train, Fraser Highway etc. Their preference is to get better transportation and other amenities. Thus, we are working hard to fulfill their desires. To provide facility to the resident’s, our upcoming projects are to make houses near the transit. So, they can afford their living and transportation easily. There are many approved projects coming soon for the betterment of the society, transportation and housing for our residents. We are planning to finish our objectives in the first year only or as soon as possible. So that we can have more developments in the remaining three years. I am determined and confident that we are going to accomplish a lot more by then. Canada is a multi-cultural country and people from different background enjoy different festivals. WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE TO THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY ON THE UP-COMING AUSPICIOUS FESTIVAL- DIWALI? A: Ofcourse, Diwali is coming soon. I wish to all the readers “ A very happy and safe Diwali. I would encourage
all our residents to join together and celebrate it. All of us are a part of the learning process of understanding and learning new cultures and festivals. It is very important to know that Diwali is very significant for all of us. Let’s join together to understand the principle of this auspicious festival and celebrate it with full of joy.

T
he Times of Canada team had the opportunity to meet Mr. Baldev Bath and ask him a few questions about his life. Many people look to Baldev Bath for wisdom. To learn more about his personality and social involvement the TOC team recently met Mr. Bath in his office. Undoubtedly, The Man with Golden Heart was carrying an Ocean of Wisdom and Compassion with himself. He is a complete book and we found him ready to share its contents with us. Several organizations and dignitaries have rightly awarded him for his wisdom and extraordinary achievements. But our team was also mesmerized by his unique approach to living and life. Here are a few glimpses of the discussion we had with Mr. Bath. Q: MR. BATH, COULD YOU PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF? A: Baldev Bath is really a simple straight forward and humble person full of respect for others. My journey starts from the village where, among others, my grandfather Basant Singh Bath raised me. He led a simple but highly virtuous life and I tried to follow his footsteps. He is ever close to my heart. I am a strong believer in leading a life of hard work, discipline, honesty and generosity. For me the main purpose of human life is to be compassionate and help others.
BALDEV BATH The Man with Golden Heart
“Thanks to Canada for welcoming me with open arms and giving me these opportunities to grow and prosper in life. Now, it is my duty to give back to my community here.”
Q: HOW DID BASANT MOTORS ORIGINATE? A: My first job, after immigrating from India to Canada, was in a sawmill. One of the most important person who has influenced my life here is none other than Mr. Assa Singh Johal. He is the one who motivated me in every way and supported me through thick and thin. He is and was one of my mentors. But then one day it suddenly occurred to me, why not explore life in some other ways too? I thought of several ventures and eventually decided on this automobile industry. That’s how Basant Motors originated. In 1991 there was no other car-dealership name noticeable in the region. Only one name stood out: “Basant Motors”. Q: WHAT IS THE REASON YOU ARE SO HUMBLE, RESPECTFUL AND CARING ? I was always watching my grandfather set an example like this, I know I will never can be as he was. I think giving brings me more happiness than receiving. Art of giving is something natural that comes with us at birth. What we are doing in our life is not something we choose to do, tasks were assigned when we born. I am committed to preserve and save everything we can for our coming generation as water, air and food are vital to the survival kit to live. Q: HOW THE NAME “BASANT” CAME UP IN YOUR MIND? 18
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
A: As I mentioned earlier, Basant is my grandfather’s name who never visited Canada, but I followed his footsteps here and taught my children to do so. His generosity was admired much by everyone in the village. Many times, he brought strangers home and offered them food, clothes and other necessities. All these qualities became my legacy, I acquired them from him. It is because of his blessings that I try to make these humble efforts to make our world happier, healthier and our culture richer.
this, his approach towards life is optimistic and clear. It’s certainly a matter of contentment for a father that his son is taking up all the responsibilities of the business and taking it to higher levels. It is his way of working to delivers more than what others expect. He likes to stay ethical, loyal and humble with everyone he meets. To put it in another way, I must admit It makes me feel very delighted when I see him walking the same footsteps as I did to set a way of living. He is such a kind, faithful and lovable personality.
Q: COULD YOU PLEASE DISCUSS ABOUT YOUR FAMILY? A: Well, I am blessed with a lovely wife, Resham, and three beautiful children. Resham is really the one who made me what I am today. She is the backbone of my life. Everything I possess is just because of her and I have no hesitation to say that she has done wonders to my life. About my children: my elder daughter’s name is Harkamal who is serving community as a Nurse; my other daughter’s name is Prabhjit who is a teacher or can be called a nurturer of children. My son’s name is Amrit, a true asset to Basant Motors indeed. He is taking care of the business diligently and very effectively. He proved a real gem of a man. I am very proud of him as a person and proud of his extraordinary capabilities; he went beyond than what I expected of him in his accomplishments.
Q: MR. BATH, COULD YOU PLEASE LET US KNOW, WHAT IS YOUR VISION BEHIND DISTRIBUTING THE SCHOLARSHIPS? A: This community service of ours was never planned, and the reason for its origin and development is very simple. It is just because we believe: “investing in education means investing in Our Future”. We want to see our children grow and wish to support them to become successful adults. Basant Motors wants to help our youth realize their potential and help them develop into contributing members of the community. We hope that wherever these members go they support others in building their future.
Q: WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR SON AS A BUSINESSMAN? A: My son Amrit Bath -and my daughter-in-law Jovita as well – is following the footsteps of his pedigree. Apart from
Q: MR. BATH, YOU HAVE INVESTED IN THE MOVIES, LIKE ASEES, AND IN OTHER ARTISTIC UNDERTAKINGS TOO. WHAT MADE YOU VENTURE INTO MUSIC AND MOVIES? A: I am a strong believer that the music is a kind of therapy we all need for healthy living. Music stimulates mind. Focused listening is an incredible experience that allows one to be lost in a creative world. I always try it in my spare time. It is something that brings me closer to others as well. When I see somebody singing or composing, I really feel as if some kind of miracle was happening connecting us to each other by words and sounds. I feel like being in the seventh heaven when I watch my favorite actors perform the play or film I had created in my imagination (I too like to write however humble it may be). Watching them live nurtures my thought process more deeply, and urges me to write something better, create something more real. I remember that there 19
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
was a time when we hardly had money to buy a movie ticket, but today with God’s grace buying a ticket is no problem; rather, we help others now. Q: WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE TO THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY? A: My message is simple: everyone should think about the entire community beyond him or herself. And the community should reach to its members in need. We should do things in ways that are good for us and good for others. We should be thankful to the almighty God and the Universe that we got a chance to come to this world. I am thankful to Canada for welcoming me with open arms and for giving me these wonderful opportunities to grow and prosper in life. I feel it is my duty now to give back to the community. I also bow my head to the people who are crucial to the welfare of this planet. I think it’s the people and our surroundings that make you whatever you are in life. My inspiration to serve the community comes from our environment and nature gifted to us by that supreme power. In the end, I would say let us all create our own to-do lists to make our community safe and prosper, to preserve our beautiful environment for ever, to make this earth a real heaven.

NO LEGACY IS SO RICH AS
HONESTY “
T
HE REALTOR HAS TO HAVE A MINDSET OF PUTTING THEIR CLIENTS INTEREST FIRST RATHER THAN PUTTING HIS OWN INTERESTS AHEAD OF THE CLIENTS” 22
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BACKGROUND PRIOR TO REAL ESTATE I first migrated to Canada in 1998 at the age of 18 with my father. The lifestyle shock was apparent and I knew I had to become accustomed. My father and I lived together in a 1-bedroom basement while I was doing work at a greenhouse. The working life was new to me as I grew up not working. I was quick to learn great work ethics when I started working at a lumber mill at the age of 19. I took the work ethic I learned from the greenhouse and got promoted to chargehand of the night shift within 6-months. This was my first small taste of what success after hard work felt like and I was hooked. On the other hand, my father had a hard time getting comfortable with Canadian life and continually told me how much he considered going back home to India. Deep down, I knew if we stuck through the hard times that the reward would come to us ten fold. After spending a year at the mill, I noticed how large the BC construction industry was. I asked around to my inner circle and landed a plumbing job with my brother-in-law. I worked with him and learned a lot about the trades. I was still hungry for more, so I picked up a union job at regency fireplaces where I was able to work 40-hours a week and do plumbing after hours. I even tried driving a taxi part time on the weekends for 1-year. After working on many renovation jobs as a plumber, I saw the potential in buying, renovating and selling properties. I bought my first property with my wife in 2003 and never looked back. After renovating and flipping a handful of homes, I saw bigger potential in building brand new homes and selling them. I did this a few times before realizing I could sell my own properties and save commission. I tried doing, “For Sale By Owner” and failed miserably. I was motivated to get my Real Estate Trading Services License after this point and did so in 2006. I continued to build and sell homes for another 5 years before deciding to stop building and solely focus on the residential sales side. I chose to then build a team around me and help guide my friends and clients on investing, building, buying and selling.
family had a long history of being Teachers, although I was not going to be a Teacher, I felt like I could work hard and I could be successful, doing my own business. I started listening to Tony Robin a lot and I attended his seminar. That gave me some direction on what I could do and what I should do with my life. If any one was a mentor to me, I would have to say it was the motivational speaker, Tony Robin. 4. HOW HAS YOUR LIFE BEEN AS A REALTOR? It’s hectic. However, I am continually driven, because I have seen how my passion and honesty has been appreciated when I am helping a client. I am really blessed to know so many people in my life as a client, colleague, or as a friend. The way people put trust in me, that keeps me going and I never feel tired. 5. THERE ARE SO MANY REALTORS IN THE LOWER MAINLAND, WHY SHOULD SOMEONE PREFER YOU? I don’t think someone should prefer me, but I think they should do their own due diligence and see who is the right Real Estate Advisor for them. Real Estate is the biggest investment for the average Canadian or person. The Realtor has to have a mindset of putting their clients interest first rather than putting his own interests ahead of the clients. 6. WHAT STRATEGIES ARE YOU USING TO PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS? I believe in providing honest advice and to work in the best interest of my clients and that is what keeps the business
WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION AS A REALTOR, IF ANY? While I was learning a lot from doing labour jobs, one thing constantly bothered me. I believed that I could do something more. I wanted to make something of myself. My 23

coming. Most of my business is still referral based. The second thing I do is try to be consistent. Consistency in a business is important, it has to be everyday. WHAT ARE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS AS A REALTOR TILL NOW? Like many new Realtors, I struggled for the first 3 years in my Real Estate Business. In 2009, I made the Medallion Club and continued to work hard. As the years passed, my business grew and I had a lot of business to handle, so I decided to hire my first Assistant in 2014. By 2015, I become recognized as a Top 1% Realtor in the Fraser Valley. We got the Titan and Diamond award under our belt. In 2017, I expanded my team again to continue to support the growth of my Real Estate Business. Today, I am fortunate enough to begin taking the next leaps into another company of my own, EverNest Marketing Inc. that focuses on Project Marketing and Sales for
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM THIS CAREER? So far this has been an amazing journey. Coming to Canada at 18 years old age and going through a few hurdles to find my true passion, helping families grow financially. It gives me satisfaction and something to feel proud of. The best part of my journey has been doing the right things for my clients and finding success in my business by following this motto. If you want to be successful in any industry, money should not be your first priority, helping your clients is number one. IF SOMEONE WANTS TO BE IN THE SAME PROFESSION, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE TO HIM/HER? Being a Realtor is not about being a salesman or making lots of money. You should strive to continue to learn everyday. There are a lot of things to learn to help you to become that expert your clients want and need. You should find your drive, be dedicated, learn effective time management skills, have empathy and always be transparent. Take ownership of any mistakes you do in a transaction. Be honest and put your clients interest above your own. Success will inevitably come. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON CONCERNS OF A CLIENT? Trust. It’s psychological. In Real Estate you are acting as a physician to your clients, if you are transparent and have the ability to learn what your clients are looking for, there won’t be any major concerns in your clientele. But, to go back to the original question, I have found that the most common concern is the fear of overpaying for a home. To overcome this for your client, you need to be a competent and knowledgeable Realtor and do your market research, know the property values and the market trends to best assist them.
multi-family developments. Recently, I am excited to market and sell my very first multi-family Project at Chelsea Gates by Westcorp Development. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS AND 10 YEARS? My clients are growing and most of them were builders when I started working with them. They are going into bigger projects. That is the reason I opened up the EverNest Marketing Inc. I want to continue my relationships with my clients and be there to market their projects. They have been with me for the last 14 years and I want to grow and continue to succeed together. I am looking forward to expanding my business into selling and marketing bigger land development projects.
WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON THE CONDITION OF THE REAL ESTATE MARKET OF LOWER MAINLAND AND WHAT WILL BE ITS FUTURE? The market is stabilizing and we are living in Beautiful BC. With the migration, lack of land supply in the lower mainland and the government still not taking steps in the right direction, there will be an upward progression in pricing. In the long run, we will see more demand for real estate and land will continue to appreciate.

SUJOY CROSSLINKS Money Transfer
Helping you transfer money with ease and speed! Canada is a country of immigrants, and many people residing here still have ties and responsibilities in the country of their origin and send money ‘home’ to parents, siblings or even to a charity. Crosslink Money Transfer is one of the fastest emerging money transfer services available to Canadian citizens and residents to send money to their families back home.
SUJOY KANJILAL
C
rosslinks Money Transfer is a global digital money transfer company based in Toronto. The company offers competitive rates for money transfer across the globe. As per a market research report, the global Digital Remittance market is valued at 1540 million USD in 2018 and is expected to reach 5890 million USD by the end of 2024, growing at a CAGR of 25.1% between 2019 and 2024. The Times of Canada spoke with Sujoy, COO of Crosslinks Money Transfer to learn more about his business.
Q1. TELL US MORE ABOUT THE DIGITAL MONEY TRANSFER PROCESS IN GENERAL AND HOW DOES CROSSLINKS MONEY TRANSFER DO IT? A: Traditionally to send money back home is like any other traditional way of shopping, you must visit a money transfer store, pay in with cash or a debit card or credit card and send money to the desired person abroad. However, in the digital way of doing things you do not have to stop by a store; the store comes to you. All you need is your mobile phone or the internet to send money home. Crosslinks website www.crossmt.com and its iOS and Android mobile apps provide the 28

features of a traditional store on the website and mobile. Crosslinks App provides you with all a payout location abroad, our best rates, real-time transaction tracking, fee calculator and support. With the Crosslinks website and mobile app, the customer gets the best features of a store without queueing and time waste or detour from the routine travels like for work or vacations, etc. Q2. WHY DID YOU START THIS BUSINESS? A: As the world is going digital, it has also been my longtime dream how to better serve my community by reducing the money transfer fees, offering them the best foreign exchange rates and avoiding the long queues at money transfer stores. So, in 2016, in a conference, in New Delhi, India a group of friends discussed how we can use the Fintech opportunity to make a difference in the lives of immigrants who are living away from their home countries and have to send money on regular basis to support families back home. In 2017 with the help of like-minded people, Crosslinks was born. Crosslinks main aim is to serve immigrants. Usually an immigrant moves from one country to another looking for a better life for his family. Initially he cannot bring in his relatives, so he has to send money to support them from abroad. But what we see is that the money transfer companies and banks cash it on such immigrants, by charging exorbitant fees, bad foreign exchange rates plus no standardization on when the money will be delivered. This is where Crosslinks can make a difference by helping a person send more to their beloved ones and paying lesser fees. We offer Express same-day delivery, the best exchange rates and a flat amount fees as low as $ 1.90 to send up to $3000 per day to India. Q3. THERE ARE SOME BIG PLAYERS IN THE DIGITAL MONEY TRANSFER INDUSTRY, WHAT MAKES CROSSLINKS MONEY TRANSFER UNIQUE? A: Crosslinks has an excellent dedicated multilingual customer service, express same-day delivery for no extra charges, same foreign exchange rates for new customer or existing one. In general, our existing and new customers can always enjoy a combination of the best exchange rates available and lowest fees. We are the bridge to happiness for the sender as well as the receiver.
Q4. ON THE WEBSITE YOU HAVE LISTED FOUR WAYS TO RECEIVE MONEY, PLEASE EXPLAIN FURTHER. A: Yes, money can be received by the beneficiary or receiver either in cash or directly into their bank accounts or directly delivered to them at their doorstep or to their mobile via a top-up. The cash payout is when the receiver gets cash in hand at the time of payout. Bank Deposit is when the receivers bank account is directly credited from the money transfer. Home Delivery is when the receiver received the cash at their home, delivered by our partners. Receiving method depends largely to each country government regulatory agencies. Air Time top-ups are when the receiver’s pre-paid mobile is loaded or topped up through the money transfer transaction. We offer this service in 130 countries. Q5. TELL US ABOUT YOUR LIFE JOURNEY, YOUR FAMILY? A: I have been in the remittance and money transfer business since early 2000. I have lived in Bahrain, Singapore, Malaysia and now Canada away from my home country, India. I have experienced both sides of the table - remitted money myself to my family back home as well be provided service to large Indian diaspora living abroad. I understand what any sender feels (getting bad deal and wasting time) and as a manager for many money transfer companies, I got the opportunity to see many immigrants stand in a queue for long times after a hardworking day to send money to their families. Now through Crosslinks I am committed to not only reduce the cost of sending the money but also make the sending experience enjoyable and hassle-free. Q6. WHICH COUNTRIES IS CROSSLINKS MONEY IS SERVING RIGHT NOW? A: At present Crosslinks serve India, Sri Lanka, Philippines, China, Jordan, Pakistan, and Nepal. Many more countries are in the pipeline. Airtime mobile top-up is available in 130 countries. Q7. ARE YOU GOING TO EXPAND THE PRODUCTS AND SERVICE TO OTHER COUNTRIES IN 2020? A: Yes, We are in process to serve worldwide countries very soon especially using blockchain technology through our partnership with RippleNet.

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.

Miss Calgary. I went on to become 1st Runner-Up Miss Canada, and I won Miss Photogenic at the Miss Canada pageant. I then also represented Canada at the Top Models of the World Competition in Germany. I have been acting, modeling, and emceeing for many years. Last year around this time, I came to Vancouver to shoot the cover of a magazine. As fate would have it, I met producer Jatinder Jay Minhas at the shoot. He saw something in me and thought I would be a good fit for his film Saak.
HOW YOU GOT A CHANCE TO WORK IN THIS FILM? In my younger years I was the first visible minority to win
WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION WHEN YOU GET TO KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO BE PART OF THIS HUGE PROJECT? Honestly over the years, I have met many producers and directors who make many promises but often things don’t pan out. I was excited and hopeful; however, I
ormer Miss Calgary debuted in Punjabi Cinema from the film “Saak”. Gurdeep was born and raised in Canada to immigrant parents who came to Canada for a better life. She was 1st runner-up Miss India Canada in 1996. She then she won Miss Calgary in 2001. Brar also ran her own entertainment company and has written an incredible book, “What’s The Point of Life, Death, and the Universe?”

in my wildest dreams. I was always very awkwardly tall and my facial features were not typical: I had these big pouty lips and round cheeks. As a teenager I think I started to fall into my god given talents. I realized that my height was a blessing and that I had decent acting ability. HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH MANDY TAKHAR? It’s always a nice opportunity to work with senior actors. I learned a lot from watching her. AS YOU ARE CANADIAN BORN HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING IN INDIA? To be honest I was a little scared to go to India all by self to shoot a movie. I think the first two days I did not even leave my hotel room. However, I can honestly say India was beyond amazing! The people that work in the Punjabi Film Industry are very professional and kind hearted. Fans that came to watch were so respectful and gave me so many blessings and so much love. I absolutely loved shooting in India! WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO BOLLYWOOD? Yes I think Bollywood is a great Industry, and I speak fluent Hindi so that would be a great experience. But I have to say I am very proud to be a part of the Punjabi Film Industry. They are doing some amazing work and making Punjabi’s proud all over the world! ANY ADVICE TO NEWCOMERS TO GET INTO POLLYWOOD INDUSTRY? Yes the advice I have to give a newcomer is to be patient. My husband is an athlete and he gave me the best advice that shifts nicely between sports and films: “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.” Often in life you only get one shot to show what you can do. Make sure you practice and prepare physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Oh and one more thing NEVER COMPROMISE ON YOUR MORALS EVER! INTEREST, HOBBIES AND FITNESS GOALS I am kind of a jack of all trades but a master of none. I like to cook, dance, play ball hockey, and workout.
was skeptical. I think it was about a week before I flew to India that it sunk in that this is actually happening! Telling my family and friends was such a special moment. They were all so excited for me. AS A CHILD WHAT WAS YOUR CAREER DREAM? As the first child born outside of India on both sides of my family, I grew up very self conscious and insecure. I was heavily picked on, so I never imagined becoming a pageant winner or an actress
WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL? A role model to me is not a very successful person. It is someone who is not afraid of taking risks, failure, and starting all over again. My entire life my dad Sukhdev Singh Dhaliwal has been my role model. He is the kindest, funniest, and most open minded person I know. He gave me a very strong religious and spiritual compass that is at the center of who I am. WHAT WILL BE YOUR FUTURE PROJECTS? Right now I am headed on tour with Diljit Dosanj as his Emcee for the US Roar Tour. I am also in talks with a few Directors and Producers, so God willing you will see me again on the big screen.

n 5 August 2019; the NDA government has scrapped the article 370 of the Indian constitution except clause 1 of the same. With this masterstroke, the politico geographical changes will be as such that now the state of Jammu and Kashmir will become a Union territory with legislative assembly and Ladhak will be another union territory without any legislative assembly
and under Lt Governor. The resolution was moved by Union home minister Amit Shah in the backdrop of growing turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir. However, this has been done after a lot of vociferous opposition from the Congress and regional parties from the state like the People’s Democratic Party 38

abolition of the monarchy of Jammu and Kashmir. Article 370 Article 370 laid down that except for matters related to defense, foreign affairs, communications and issues specified in the Instrument of Accession of Jammu and Kashmir; Parliament needs the state government’s ratification for all other laws. It is a ‘temporary provision’, that promises to grant autonomous status to Jammu and Kashmir and limits Parliament’s powers to make laws for the state.

(PDP) and the National Conference (NC). TMC, DMK, NCP and Left Party. The Presidential order used a clause of Article 370 to say that provisions of Article 370 would no longer be applicable in Jammu and Kashmir. The boundaries have been set legally and politically and one has to understand the implications of such an act by the government for the people of J & K and also for the rest of India by and large. The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly currently stands dissolved. ARTICLE 370 : Article 370 was enacted on 17th of October 1949. Prior to it, the instrument of accession was executed on the 26th of October 1947 by Maharaja Hari Singh (the erstwhile Maharaja of Kashmir) and accepted by Lord Mountbatten. Its precursor was the attack by the Pashtoon tribal who at the behest of the Pakistani army had entered Kashmir and were marching towards attacking Srinagar. Maharaja had no option but to seek help from Indian Government who said that the government can help Maharaja only if it was a part of India. Under those circumstances, Maharaja then decided to integrate with India. Further on, the Presidential order was issued on 15 November 1952, at the request of the state government. It amended the Article 370, replacing the phrase “recognized by the President as the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir” to “Sadr e riyasat” which was again changed in 1965 to the “Governor” of the state who was appointed by the president of India. The amendment thus represented the
Under Part XXI of the Constitution titled “Temporary, transitional and special provisions”, Article 370 is categorized as a “temporary provision with respect to the State of Jammu and Kashmir. The Article limits Parliament’s powers to make laws to those matters in the Union and Concurrent Lists, in consultation with the state government, as declared by the President, which should correspond with matters specified under of Instrument of Accession, the statute says. It also lays down that only two Articles of the Constitution will apply to Jammu and Kashmir – Article 1 that defines India and Article 370 itself. The provision was included in the Constitution on 17 October 1949. CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGES AFTER THE SCRAPPING OF ARTICLE 370 IN THE STATE OF J & K : 1. J&K will be divided into two states ie Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. 2. Both Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir now will be Union territories. Jammu and Kashmir will have a state Legislative Assembly like Delhi and Puducherry while Ladakh would be a Union Territory without Legislative Assembly like Chandigah and will be ruled by a Lt Governer. 3. All the provisions of the article 370 stand null and void except clause 1 of the article 370. Clause 1 of the article 370 envisages that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India. 4. The reservation policy earlier did not give any reservation facilities to Hindu, Sikhs, SC/ST/ Minorities. With the scrapping of article 370, people of SC/STs/Minority communities will get reservation in Government jobs and admission in colleges and Universities. 5. There will be new structuring of the seats of Legislative Assembly; earlier the total assembly seats were 111 (Kashmir- 46, Jammu- 37, Ladhak – 4, POK – 24); now the total assembly seats of J & K will be 83 as the 4 seats of Ladhak region has been dissolved. 6. Earlier the Panchayat’s IN J & K had no rights, now the panchayat will have all the rights enjoyed by any other panchayat in India. 39
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
7. Indian citizen now can buy property in Jammu and Kashmir unlike earlier law. 8. Residents of Jammu And Kashmir State will now have single citizenship and all the benefits of this citizenship, as is the case in rest of India. 9. The refugees who came after independence from Pakistan and later on as an aftermath of wars had been denied citizenship and no right to vote or any rights to have government jobs etc. with abrogation of article 370, they can now get due citizenship rights as any other Indian and also will be entitled to all other facilities of the citizen of India for eg right to vote, job reservation etc. 10. Unlike earlier protection to the government of J & K, Right to Information act (RTI) will be applicable in the new state of Jammu and Kashmir. 11. The tenure of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is reduced to 5 years from 6 years as it was earlier. 12. A eoman marrying out of state used to lose all her citizenship right. Now she will retain and enjoy all her rights as was in her birth. 13. Right to education (RTE) was not applicable earlier, after the abrogation of the article 370 , all children will have right to education & the state will take care of it. 14. Article 35A, making a distinction between the permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir and the outsiders, will also cease to have any effect in Jammu and Kashmir.

tuality this will prevent the assimilation of Kashmiri’s into national mainstream. Former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah have been house arrested when the article was scrapped in the parliament. Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference leaders Sajjad Lone and Imran Ansari have also been arrested in order to avoid any violence or untoward incident in the state.

POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS: The BJP government as promised in their manifesto has done the masterstroke, taking the entire nation by surprise. There has been huge hue and cry from the Congress party in particular opposing this scrapping of article 370. However, amongst the national patriotic flavour that spread all over the country, they seemed to have been cornered and left out all alone to justify the legal status of article 370. The abolition of Article 370 has been projected as a black spot or death knell of Kashmiri Muslim culture by Congress, PDP and NC, but in ac-
Rahul Gandhi had to back track on his statement on the status of J& K when Pakistan quoted his as their justification on the brutalities being done on the people of J&K to the United Nations. Similarly the leaders of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and National Conference (NC) have been cornered for their innumerable accumulation of wealth for themselves on one end and for the poor state and lack of facilities provided to the people of J & K so far. Article 370 has created a psychology of separatism right from the beginning of its inception especially in between the people of the state and the rest of India so much so that even neighbouring country like Pakistan would mock at the Kashmir to Kanyakumari tagline of India. It gave influx to a two-nation theory. It acted as fuel to fire as over a period of time, the separatist lobby in the state has used this barrier to build a mindset of alienation. The vested interests of such lobbyist and politicians in Kashmir resulted in exploitation of the poor and the rise of the capitalist mindset where the rich became richer and the poor poorer. This new dawn of integrated India might cost dearly to the leaders of PDP, NC etc. who have been leading a king size life and manipulating situations to their advantages. Their ideologies and identities are at crisis with this new development of one integrated India. The atrocities on Kashmiri Pandits and their plight is another story of failed state governance. They have suffered a lot in past few decades and can now go back to their homeland and settle back in their home state. The state administration had failed to provide adequate protection to them in 1989-90 under the influence of radicalist and separatist who had infiltrated the state government system under the protection of article 370. 40
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
After this abrogation, a lot will be eased now and hopefully things will get back to normal for them. It is ironic that on one end, Article 370 provides all the political, economic, cultural and other safeguards to Kashmiris; however, under its protection the Kashmiri’s have misused it to deny the same rights to the resident of other regions of the state. The huge unrest in Ladhak in the 1989 was a result of such atrocity done by the Kashmiri muslims on them.
can have a say on this. Pakistan on the other hand has been left off guard and stranded by this decision in international platform. It has raised hue and cry to the UN and other countries but in vain. Kashmir was the political pulse for the Pakistani political setup and with the scraping of article 370; they have been left with nothing to bite on. Already under huge economic debt, the air passage being shut down for India is only building further losses to them.
B R Ambedkar , Dr Shyama Prasad Mukharjee were the ones who had gone out of the way to be vociferous on their dislike towards the unfairness of article 370.
It is high time that Pakistan and other neighbouring countries including India should all come together for economic development of the nations as a cumulative support to each other. Playing around with partisan politics does not lead any one towards a constructive future.
INTERNATIONAL SCENARIO: In the international scenario, Modi government has been able to garner huge support for its decision on article 370. It has been able to state to the world that Kashmir has been an integral part of India and it has been India’s integral decision to set new boundaries for its state and no other country
Narendra Modi’s government has created history by scrapping of article 370 and 35 A. The ripples it has created can have its reflections in political scenario of India for a long time to come.

1-How to improve your relationship with your spouse? If your relationship is going through a rough patch and you have started seeing your lover in a negative light, this story might help you to shift your perspective and eventually strengthen your relationship. How? Famous American psychiatrist Aaron Beck, known as the father of cognitive therapy, suggests maintaining a ‘marriage diary’ can do wonders to a couple’s love life. 2- What the psychiatrist suggests Aaron Beck in his book ‘Love Is Never Enough’ explains how sometimes partners develop the tendency to only see each other’s fault and not appreciate the positive traits. For instance, if a partner has labeled the other as ‘selfish’, this assumption tends to snowball with time. In turn, it becomes easier to spot the ‘selfish’ acts of your spouse and the generous ones get ignored.
3- The concept of ‘marriage diary’ In Beck’s words, “We see each other through the bias of negative frames.” He suggests keeping a ‘marriage diary’ where a partner writes down the things their spouse do to please them, can help to increase the satisfaction level in their relationship.
r
4-The experiment Beck cites about an experiment where psychologist Mark Kane Goldstein conducted a survey where each spouse was given a sheet where they were asked to keep the track of all the activities of their lover that pleased them.

Next, these respondents were asked to rank these acts on a scale of ten indicating their satisfaction level. 5-The result Goldstein concluded that a whopping 70 per cent of these couples reported an improvement in their relationship and started appreciating the efforts their partners made for them. 6- Considering the opposite Psychologists call this technique ‘considering the opposite’ where partners try to shift their focus from negative traits of their partner to the little day-to-day pleasures associated with them. 7- The next time… Every relationship goes through ups and downs, and every couple fight. What matters is that both the partners make efforts to resolve the issues in their relationship and not make a negative perception about each other. The key to a successful marriage is to appreciate (and write) the little things your partner does for you and practice gratitude. 45

JASS JASSAL A
DVICE TO YOUNG WOMEN Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN WHO WANT TO SUCCEED IN THE WORKPLACE? Ans- There is no substitute of hard work, sincerity and honesty. I advise young generations not to run after earning money with short cuts, rather they should be selfconfident, focused and sincere in their efforts. I believe “ Dream Bigger, Do bigger & then surround yourself with people who will support you in achieving bigger vision.” DO YOU THINK WOMEN FEEL INTIMIDATED IN BUSINESS? Ans- In past time, women feel insecured at work place because they were not well educated, and were unaware of their rights, moreover, the number of working females were few. In the modern time of women empowerment, conditions have been changed. Now, females are more confident, bold & also took participation in management decisions. But, still there is need to create more awareness among society, so that they can support females whole heartedly. HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE WORK LIFE BALANCE? Ans- Work Balance depends upon time management strategy, I am mother of two kids Ronit & Avleen. Me & Harry manage the time in a such way so that kids can participate in their curriculum activities regularly. We have a rule in our family to have dinner together and discuss whole day activities. Basically, I want to say that separation of personal & professional lives is mantra behind happy and successful life. HOW DID YOU GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY, AND WHO/WHAT HELPED YOU ALONG THE WAY? Ans- I started my life in Canada like a struggling immigrant. I did double shift to earn my bread & butter. We took a life changing step in 2007 and stepped into signage industry under the name of Jassal Signs Ltd without any financial help or work force. With the grace
of god & support of family and friends, Jassal Signs Ltd. grew by leaps & bounds over the past years. Jassal Signs Ltd. is now well-known name in the sign industry. It is progressing rapidly under the ownership of Mr. Harjinder Jassal. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT LEADERSHIP, ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND MENTORING OTHERS? Ans: Team work plays a pivotal role in success of an organization, so, employer should be a good leader, mentor as well as entrepreneur so that he can understand and lead his employees, explain them the method of working without the sacrifice of profitability. Mentoring leads development of leadership skills and personal sense of satisfaction that they have helped someone. Mentees can expand their knowledge and skills with valuable advice from experienced person & build their professional network. WHAT HAS BEEN THE ROLE OF LUCK IN YOUR SUCCESS? Ans- It is general conception that people achieve success due to their good luck. But we don’t see struggle behind that success. Luck Matters, but it is not a substitute of hard work. Determination & honesty are key parameters to achieve the goals in life. I strongly believe that people make their own paths for success by great preparation and good strategy.

STYLING TRICKS
to nail the job
INTERVIEW
B
efore you say a single word to the interviewer, you have already made an impression based on how you’re dressed. The guidelines given here are commonly accepted as appropriate for interviewing. Every company has a different dress code; how you dress at the job may have very little to do with how you dress for an interview. And, If you really want to crack that next job interview you ought to work harder towards it. First things first, update your CV and read about the company you are heading to, the next step is to groom yourself for the big day. We all get butterflies in the stomach at the mention of an interview. It’s not just the interview questions that worry people, what to wear and how to look are the other worries.
Being presentable is important, but one should go for a look that conveys that they’re serious about the job. Here’s a quick guide to what you can wear to an interview and make a great first impression. IT’S ALWAYS GOOD TO WEAR A DRESS Wearing pants and button down shirts is not the only way to look professional. Feel free to wear a dress or a skirt. However, avoid sleeveless as it can make you look a bit casual. Your dresses or skirts should be an inch or two above your knee. Anything shorter qualifies as a party dress, anything longer than that needs to be hemmed. Better to be over dressed than underdressed If you are unsure about what to wear and how you should be dressed for an interview, make sure you’re more dressed up. This conveys that you 48
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
are a professional and are serious about the job. Professional businesses pay attention to detail like over or under-sized clothing, if your shirt is tucked in or not, or how you stand out of the crowd. WATCH THOSE NAILS There is nothing worse than an old and chipped nail paint spotted by your interviewer. It’s a small indicator that shows them you may have trouble keeping everything under control. Avoid flashy colors and go for neutral shades. (Read professional.) If you’re not a nail paint person, then make sure your nails are clean and well-shaped.
Heels make all the difference to an outfit. It doesn’t matter what height you go for. Wearing heels will give you that extra push towards being that extra push towards b someone who looks like they know their stuff. However, avoid wearing a pair of stiletto. Leave them for clubbing. Make sure that your heels are polished; if it’s suede, then keep it clean. PREFER A NATURAL LOOK Avoid your red lipstick or smokey eyes while going for an interview. Loud makeup is a no-no. Also, trying out a new hair style for the first time is not a good idea, you never know how it’s going to turn out. Keep your hair neat, lest you want to come across as a messy person. Think you’re meeting your grandmother and put on the make-up accordingly.

eath threats because you wear a turban. Hate mail targeting you while you work to serve and protect that same public. Seems unimaginable today. But it is often the same struggle faced by those courageous enough to challenge a system and become the “first”. A debt of gratitude is owed to those who are brave enough to take on this fight. One such fight was the right to wear a turban in a policing uniform. In 1990, Baltej Singh Dhillon won the right to wear his turban and get sworn into Canada’s national police force, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). After a multi- year campaign to highlight how the practise of forcing him to choose between a profession or practise his religious beliefs, the discriminatory policy was changed. In March of 1990 the Government of Canada announced
BALTEJ SINGH DHILLON several changes to the RCMP dress code. These included the allowing female officers the right to wear trousers like their male counterparts and the freedom of Sikhs to keep their turbans and beards. The government announced these changes but that does not mean that the hearts and minds of people across the country and within the RCMP itself had been changed. 50
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
changes. Today we are thankful that Baltej Singh Dhillon and others who face similar challenges had the courage to stand up for equality and diversity. We also have a great sense of pride in this amazing country and in the freedoms we are provided with in Canada, regardless of gender identity, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious background.
The national debate that this decision sparked across the country lasted for several more years. Legal challenges were launched over the next 5 years. In 1996, The Supreme Court of Canada upheld the government’s decision. The naysayers felt that immigrants were already eroding too many of the traditions in this country and they should have to conform to “Canada” if they wanted to live here. For some it was racially motivated and for others they just felt the RCMP was too sacred of a symbol to allow for the uniform without the Stetson. Whatever the reasons, the discussions were held around dinner tables and classrooms across the country. Change does not come easily. Those on the front line feel the intensity of people’s passions both for and against
“At the time it felt like my Canada had let me down, the promise of inclusivity, equality and fairness felt hollow” says Baltej Singh Dhillon. “This all went away when I got the call to serve, then it was just about doing my best as a Police Officer – Serving.” There is a debt of gratitude owed to all those brave women and men who put themselves out there to question the status quo. The advancement of diversity within policing and law enforcement was undoubted sparked by the young man who both wanted to practise his faith and serve the community. Baltej retired as an Inspector from the RCMP in British Columbia In August of 2019 after almost 30 years as a police officer.

Krishna
CONSCIOUSNESS HARE KRISHNA DEAR READERS, What is the difference between a living body and a dead body? Many say that one is breathing and other is not; some say consciousness; some say the heartbeat and so on. In a way all these are correct. But what is that which 54
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
makes all these things to happen in our body? Let me not keep you in suspense … it is “ATMA”, a spirit soul. As long as the atma resides in the body, it remains alive. Once atma leaves the body, it becomes a dead body. The next question is, Who Am I? Am I this body? If you think I am this body, then suppose if I die in front of you due to a massive heart attack, then you will say “Oh! Alas! Manu Das has passed away.” Although this body is lying in front of you, you are aware that something has left from this body and thus it became dead. Is it not? Therefore, we can conclude that we are not this body. Now, what’s the most important thing in our body? Is it the brain? the heart? the lungs? the liver? or the kidneys? Some say it is the brain and some may point to the heart. However, as you all know that these organs are still present intact in the dead body too but without any value. Is it not? Therefore, we understand that what gives value to this dead matter is “Atma”. Unfortunately, there is no university or school that teaches us about this MOST important ingredient in our body – the “SOUL” what we call in Sanskrit the “ATMA”. Rather, their main focus is on the dead matter. For example, neurology for the brain; cardiology for the heart; nephrology for the kidneys; all are about the dead matter! In International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), popularly known as “Hare Krishna temple,” we teach about the soul. So ISKCON is not a temple but a university that teaches the Science of Self Realization; that you are not this body but a pure spirit soul, part and parcel of the Supreme Being. Forgetting that relationship, we wrongly identify ourselves with the body and thus struggle in this material world. As parts serve the whole, our duty is to serve the Supreme Whole and thus re-establish our lost relationship to be eternally happy. We call the Supreme Being as Lord Sri Krishna; Christians call Him Jehovah; Muslims call Him Allah and so on. Nevertheless, He is the same Person with multiple names. Unfortunately without proper knowledge of God, people are fighting with each other in the name of God. So it is time for us to learn more about God. Who is He? What is His name and address? How to attain His love? The sacred books such as Bhagavad Gita (As It Is) and Srimad Bhagavatham reveal to us such information. The above sacred books discuss about 5 subject matters. 1) Who is God? 2) What is Soul? 3) What is the material nature? 4) the ‘Time’ factor and 5) the Law of Karma (the action and reaction). Further, there are 4 basic activities that are common to both humans and animals viz., eating, sleeping defending and mating. If we, the humans simply engage in these 4 activities then we are no better than animals. His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder Acharya of ISKCON, says that human beings have the top most intelligence. One must use this highest intelligence to inquire about following three questions. • Who are we?
• •
Why we are here? Where we are going after death?
If you are interested to learn more about our philosophy, please do visit any ISKCON, Hare Krishna temple that is nearest to you. For those in BC, we are at 5462 Marine Drive, Burnaby. Every Sunday, our love-feast program starts at 5:30 PM with aarati, 6 PM Bhagavad Gita class, 7 PM main aarati with kirtan and dancing followed by free sanctified vegetarian dinner to all. For more details, www.Vancouver.ISKCON.Ca Lastly, Srila Prabhupada said that the human society is suffering with the disease called “GREEDINESS”. How much ever one has, he still needs/ wants more and works for it with lots of suffering. When one goes to a Doctor to treat a chronic disease, the Doctor prescribes some medicine and a particular diet, for example, salt-less diet for high BP and sugarless diet for diabetes. Similarly, to treat the chronic material disease like “greediness”, the medicine is chanting of the MAHA MANTRA:
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare; Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare. And the diet is Krishna prasadam which is the sanctified food prepared with love and offered with devotion to Krishna. In Bhagavad Gita (3.13), Lord Sri Krishna says: “Those who are preparing food for their sense gratification are merely eating sin only.” If we do the sin, the stringent laws of nature will punish us. That’s how sufferings come to us. However, in order to survive we need to eat. One living entity is food for another living entity - Jiva Jivasya Jivanam”. So in BG 3.13, Lord Sri Krishna further promises that if one offers the food first to Him in sacrifice, He will sanctify 55
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
the food by which there will be no KARMIC reactions. The plant which yielded the food as well as those who honored the prasadam gets the blessings of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna. Scientifically speaking, the plant which gives us grains/fruits is also a living entity and the soul is still present in that plant. When we cut the grains/fruits, we are incurring pain to that plant. So if we try to enjoy food after giving pain to the plants, then as per the laws of Karma we will incur pain. Just like Newton’s third law: For every action, there is equal and opposite reaction. However, when we prepare the food with love and devotion and offer it with love to Krishna, He promises to remove all the Karmic reactions. This is called Karma-free food or prasadam. By honoring the Karma-free food, we can elevate our consciousness. Thus by chanting the holy name of the Lord and eating Krishna Prasadam one can attain peace. Without peace there is no question of happiness. Thanks for taking your time to read this presentation. Hope to see you all at our Hare Krishna temple. Hare Krishna! EXTRA POUNDS GO VEGAN let’s
E
ating vegan is associated with a decreased risk for diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer. Plus, at 1,200 calories, this vegan weight loss meal plan sets you up to lose a healthy 1 to 2 pounds per week as per sources. A lot of people are choosing to go the vegan way. It’s trendy, good for the environment and at the same time, it has been found to be very effective for those who are looking to lose weight or adopt a fitter lifestyle. According to multiple studies, a vegan diet helps promote beneficial gut hormones that are responsible for regulating blood sugar, satiety- all of which help control weight. Since the diet makes you quit many fattening food groups and includes a more nutrientdense platter in your diet,
essentially, all of these can help you achieve your weight loss goals. Unlike any other diet, vegan diet forces you to completely reject meat, poultry, dairy and many other food groups which are usually allowed in moderation with other diet plans. It can also be costly, considering that the filtered food groups are not always easily found. The effects of veganism are more effective in the long run than in the short run. However, what people don’t know is that following a vegan diet for losing weight is anything but easy. If you have decided to 74

make the change, there is nothing like going vegan for better health. Once you decide, there will also be obvious questions in your mind-
switching your diet altogether.
WHAT TO EAT, WHAT TO GIVE UP? WHAT ABOUT THE DEFICIENCIES? WILL YOU BE LOSING OUT ON SOME NUTRIENT INTAKE? WILL THE DIET EXHAUST YOU? We answer all these questions for you: Going all-in at once
You can start by substituting or giving up on certain food groups-one by one, allowing yourself the time to adjust. For those who feel vague about giving up meat altogether, you can start by simply eating lesser meat than usual. The same goes for dairy. Choosing a substitute will make it easier for you. Another good option is to make a switch to vegetarianism first, and then follow it up with veganism.
One of the biggest fears before starting a vegan diet is that you will do it cold-turkey. This fear is what puts a lot of people, especially hardcore non-vegetarians from adopting the diet and even makes them reconsider a lot many times before starting this. However, going vegan does not mean
WOULD YOU REQUIRE SUPPLEMENTS? If you stringently follow the diet to shed extra kilos, you will have to back it up with enough supplementation. Vitamin B12 and Iodine are two things you need to keep in check. Protein and calcium are also something to not miss out 75
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
on. Hence, it is best if you fix yourself a plate that is rich in fruits, veggies, nuts, and beans rich on these sources. If finding the options are tougher, you can also consider taking in supplement pills to balance it out. In the lack of proper nutrition intake, you can run out on energy and feel weak. For nonvegetarians who transition into vegans, you can make up for the missing protein intake by including soy-based sources in your diet. HOW CRUCIAL IS CHANGE? A vegan diet is also a difficult thing for your taste buds to adapt. Sure, veggies won’t be just as savory like chicken and meat but it will be important to include food from all major groups to fulfill nourishment. If adding variety is your concern, read up and educate yourself on the different meal options and choose accordingly. Dieting doesn’t always have to be boring and with a few smart swaps, you can make your everyday meals interesting. WILL IT REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Adopting a diet is much harder than you think. For one, it is absolutely logical to consider whether the diet will make you achieve the goal you are working towards. Will it actually help you lose weight? Will it be a sustainable diet in the long run? The main difference of following a vegan diet actually comes from the variety of foods you eat and not the alteration itself. If you follow it properly, a vegan diet can impact you positively. You will feel better about yourself; see a difference in your energy levels, clear skin as you eat more vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals which were missing before. wrestlers in Canadian history. WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF SPORTS AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO EDUCATION? Sports teach you something you cannot learn anywhere else. The mental toughness it takes to adore the pain and the sacrifice it takes to reach the top is unmatched. You deal with many ups and downfalls but you have to learn to dig deep to push through them. Early mornings and late nights are a lifestyle. Hard work, focus and dedication are traits that every athlete has and these traits can be put towards anything you do in life including education. A phenomenal wrestler named Dan Gable said it the best “Once you have wrestled everything in life is easy”. COULD YOU PLEASE MENTION RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS OF YOURS? 2018/2019 Senior World Team Member 2018 Sassari Italy Champion 2018 Mongolia Open Bronze Medalist 2018 Spain Grand Prix Silver Medalist 2019 Canada Cup Champion 2019 Pan American Bronze Medalist WHEN AND WHERE YOU STARTED YOUR JOURNEY IN SPORTS? I am a third generation athlete. My grandpa was a kabaddi player in India and my dad was a weightlifter and played kabaddi as well. My brother started wrestling in Canada when he was in grade 6 and because of him I also picked up the sport. He has inspired me to continue to wrestle and has played a pivotal role in helping me achieve success. I started wrestling in Abbotsford, BC at my club named- Miri Piri Wrestling Cub and coached by Sucha Mann at the age of 10 and have continued to do so on a national and international level.
JASMIT PHULKA CHASING GREATNESS! Grab the opportunities you get, not everyone will have a chance to pursue greatness!
COULD YOU PLEASE LET US KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF? My name is Jasmit Singh Phulka. Born to Harjit Singh Phulka and Supinderjit Kaur Phulka, brother of Chanmit Singh Phulka, Grandson of Late Gurmit Singh and Shanguar Kaur. I am currently 25 years old and I am pursuing my dream of becoming one of the greatest
WHAT ROLE YOUR COACH OR TEACHERS PLAYED IN YOUR LIFE? My coach Sucha Mann has been a huge influence on my life. He has helped me so much on and off the mat. I can call him at any time of the day and he will stop and drop what he is doing to help me. He is one of the reasons why I am successful in wrestling and every great athlete knows that they would not be where they are today without the guidance from an outstanding coach. Without this proper 79

guidance and coaching, you cannot make it to a high level. WHAT ARE YOUR OBJECTIVES AND GOALS IN YOUR LIFE? My goal in life is to become one of the greatest wrestlers in Canadian history and set an example for the youth. Growing up, I had no Indo-Canadian athletes to look up to in wrestling and I want to be able to give that to the youth. There is also a lot of stigma around wrestling and how the wrestler needs to be really heavy to be successful. However, I want to set an example that regardless of a person’s weight, height or background, they can reach success. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH MULTIPLE SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS? I train hard on a daily basis. Win or lose, I am always back at practice the next day. Also, I have a really clean strict diet and lifestyle. No one in the world can stop me and having this type of mindset keeps me in shape all year long. Once you develop a strict lifestyle it makes everything easier.
consuming banned substances and then having health troubles later in life. Sports should add to your life, not to take away! Also, train hard and leave it all out there, no doubts or regrets. There will be a day when you are sitting in the stands and when that day comes to you, you should not want to have any regrets. Life is long and you will find a career and start a family, but the time we have now, when we are competing is precious. When you have the chance to go back in history as one of the best and be known for decades after you are done competing, then you have to take advantage of this opportunity, because not everyone will have a chance to pursue greatness!
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE PROPER ROLE OF PARENTS IN ANY SPORTS PROGRAM? I feel like parents should help guide their children and support them no matter what. My dad has never cared about victory or loss. But, always asks what can you do to get better? He pushes me to become the best version of myself and as long as you keep competing there is no limit of what you can achieve. The constant support from both my parents has allowed me to continue to pursue wrestling at the highest and most competitive level possible. HOW YOU FEEL AFTER WINNING ANY TOURNAMENT OR COMPETITION? Though, it feels amazing to win, the fact my family’s hard work and support is paying off is the ultimate satisfaction. My dad has done so much for me and has never stopped supporting me. My mom will cook my meals for me and always ensures I am getting proper nutrition. My brother has always been there to support and mentor me. When I was younger, my grandma used to give me massages after practice to make sure I was good for the next day. This kind of support I get from my family makes the wins that are more gratifying, because literally it is a team effort. A BRIEF MESSAGE TO OTHER PLAYERS OR CHAMPIONS? First and foremost, I want to say that being a clean athlete is the way to go. I have been doing this naturally for 15 years’ and it feels amazing. I see too many athletes 80

STRAIGHT SHINY HAIR G
etting that super-sleek straight hair is on everyone’s list. Whether you have curly, wavy or straight hair, polished straight locks can always look chic. Here are five rules you need to follow to get smooth straightened hair and looking posh just like the A-listers: RULE 1 While using a conditioner, use a wide-teeth comb to comb the product through. After washing your hair, pat the towel in a downward position and not rough towel dry. Also, invest in microfiber towels to avoid frizz. RULE 2 Before you use a straighter, you need to make sure your hair is 100 per cent dry. While using a blow dryer, you can prep the hair with a shine serum and blow dry the nozzle attachment facing downwards to get smooth and shiny blowout. RULE 3 Section hair into three to four parts. Hold one section and brush it from the roots to ends and then follow it up with a flat iron. Use a good-quality hairstyling iron and use in on low-heat setting to maintain hair’s shine and avoid any breakage and flyaways. RULE 4 Brush the hair and press the hair flat to the head. For some extra shine, you can use a smoothening glossy cream that doesn’t weigh hair down. RULE 5 Lastly, to tame any flyaways use a toothbrush sprayed with a medium-hold spray. Use it only on areas required. This will help not to add any extra weight to hair.

MINDY KALSI BANSAL:
A SELF-MADE SUCCESS STORY
A Mom-Boss of 3 | Successful Business Owner | Entrepreneur | Influencer | Global Educator
My journey began in 1972, born in Kampala, Uganda (Africa), I have been fortunate to be raised by amazing parents who always supported my dreams and aspirations. I majored in criminology, psychology and sociology, and wanted to be lawyer in pursuit of my interest for social justice. But sometimes things do not work out as we plan them to, and though law was not my path, the universe had bigger plans. A journey that I could have never predicted to be part of. Married at the age of 21 I was very fortunate to obtain some high profile positions. Having children became a priority after 10 years of marriage and I was blessed with 3 beautiful children in the matter of 5 years. It was not only difficult but very challenging to work and I had decided to put my career on hold to raise my children. In 2007 I was approached to use my creative talent and start my own business. Learning has always been a passion and something I continue to do every day. I then went to school for Business and decided to become an Entrepreneur. I was not sure if the timing was right and was feeling guilty like any mother as my kids were always my first priority. It was quite a struggle juggling 3 kids under the age of 5 and a new business, but I found a balance through the chaos and used my multi-tasking skills to full use. I started my freelance business from home and was bombarded with clients, meetings, consults, bookings and photo shoots. With life continuously changing and throwing new challenges, In 2010 my mom fell quite ill. When I went to visit her in the hospital, she held my hand and said, "you have a gift to make women feel beautiful, confident and good about themselves." After she passed away I realized what my purpose was. I wanted to make women feel beautiful, worthy of who they are, I wanted them to radiate confidence simply by enhancing their own features. Makeup was more than just painting a canvas, it was about bringing out the best in my clients and have them embrace what makes them special. As my business began to take off, I made the bold decision of opening my own studio in 2012. Since then, I have worked with thousands of clients over the years globally, creating timeless and classic looks while instilling the confidence in all who I get to work with. Less is more, and with that approach, I strive to make my clients feel like themselves with just an added spark of glamour and elegance. While creating a globally recognized and industry leading brand, I continued to balance mom life with business life. I strived through the chaos and balanced weekly schedules full of back-to-back bookings, meetings, photo shoots, events and academy classes, in addition to my children's school fieldtrips, appointments, and lunches. Being a young woman, I could've never dreamt of being on this journey. But with a fearless pursuit, I was able to create a brand recognized on international platforms, to teach hundreds of students and mentor them in support of their passions, to
Above all, and despite the amazing things I have been able to achieve, the most gratifying thing in the world is being a mom. It can be a struggle to find a balance, but by never giving up on my passions and my role as a mother, I was able to reach my greatest aspirations. I am grateful for my pillars of strength, my husband and my children for believing in me, and always being my cheer squad. Never underestimate your own strengths. You were born for a purpose and are blessed with the power to achieve it.

BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE of the BEHOLDER D
EFINITION: Any judgement of beauty is subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder is a commonly used expression in British and American English. It is frequently phrased as “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and “beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.” It applies not just to issues of physical beauty but also to anything proposed as perfect and desirable. If you introduce friends to a prized painting at the museum, they might disagree with your taste saying, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” That’s a polite way of disagreeing with you, and it can be said with some dismissive condescension. In a world with so much freedom the definition of what is considered beautiful is variable. One person may find beauty in a flower, or a flock of geese flying south for the winter, while another may consider them images far too common to encompass real beauty. When beauty moves beyond its basic definition and into the realms of
artistic expression, the word beautiful becomes even more subjective. The question posed to us for this assignment was to define how we have incorporated beauty and art into our everyday lives. Primitively, many individuals find beauty in their family. Beauty only begins to describe the spectrum of interests and attitudes each member brings to the family unit. They find their contentment and beauty in their bonding. Many people will argue that photography has no artistic merit. However, considering the collection of an anthology of commonplace objects made beautiful through artistic judgment. Scenic landscapes from frequently traveled destinations such as Niagara Falls, Elora Gorge, and Grand Bend, to panoramic views of New Brunswick’s Hopewell Rocks and Bay of Fundy. All of the many places in Canada I have traveled have been graphically recorded for future enjoyment. Every one of the photographs tells its 94

own story and everyone is unique. Photography has been, and continues to be, the greatest connection to the artistic world. ORIGIN OF BEAUTY IS (LIES) IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER: Whether or not beauty if subjective or objective has been argued since at least ancient Greece. Greek philosophers, including Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, considered beauty an absolute manifest in order, symmetry, and proportion. But, Skeptics, Epicureans, and Stoics nudged towards an understanding that beauty exists in symmetry (objective) and in eurhythmy (subjective) Roughly their contemporary, Confucius is credited with saying, “Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.” In 1741, Benjamin Franklin offered, “Beauty, like supreme dominion, / Is but supported by opinion” (Poor Richard’s Almanack, III Mon May). In 1757, British sceptic and essayist David Hume wrote, “Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different beauty” (Essay XXXII, Of the Standard of Taste). As you can see from the above examples, the sentiment expressed in this idiom is quite old, but the modern coinage is relatively recent—and attributed to a Irish novelist.
In 1878, Margaret Wolfe Hungerford, the Irish romance novelist, writing anonymously as “The Duchess” and as “Mrs. Hungerford” in the United States, published Molly Bawn, in which she coined the idiom as we generally see it today, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Examples of Beauty is (Lies) in the Eye of the Beholder Eavesdropping on the cheerleaders fawning over the football players, Jack thought to himself, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, if you ask me.” As Marcy and Harry left her boss’s newly redecorated home, he whispered “It just goes to show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” MORE ILLUSTRATIONS: They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Well, Wall Street investors love the look of e.l.f. Beauty—and they are clamouring to own a piece of the newly public cosmetics brand. –Forbes. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it’s unclear how anyone can look at this property, located at 24 Brentwood Drive, as anything “fascinating.” –New York Post SUMMARY: Beauty is (lies) in the eye of the beholder is a frequently used expression first phrased by an Irish author and commonly used in English speaking cultures. It takes a position that beauty is a subjective and personal experience.

IS LIFE REALLY MEANINGLESS? M
EANING CAN BE understood in two ways. There is meaning that is somewhere far away, you have to reach to it. It is extrinsic.
Life is not meaningful in this first sense. And it is good that life is not meaningful in that sense, because then life becomes only a means to reach to the faraway goal, the faraway star. Then life loses its autonomous beauty. It is just a way; the real thing is tomorrow. Meaning has another category too: intrinsic. Life is tremendously meaningful in the second sense. Then meaning is not separate, somewhere else; then meaning is in the very living itself. You don’t ask, has love any meaning? You know love is itself meaningful, it is not a means to some end. You do not ask if the beauty of a rose is meaningful. The beauty itself is enough; it does not lead anywhere; it contains its meaning within itself. In existence everything that is valuable is always intrinsically meaningful. And life is equivalent to existence. Life has meaning. If you just change the word “life” into “living,” you will be able to understand more easily. Living
has meaning -- each moment -- because living is not something dead like “life.” The word “life” is dead -- all nouns are dead. But the language is created by dead people. Someday the new man is going to create a language which consists only of verbs, because that will be authentic to existence. In existence there is no noun. Have you seen “life”? Have you met “life” anywhere? All that you meet, experience, is living. Sipping a cup of tea, going for a morning walk, doing your work -- all these small activities make up your living. And each part, each moment of living, is meaningful. You just have to be there; otherwise, who is going to experience the meaning? People go on drinking tea, but they never are there; their minds are wandering all over the world. People are making love, but they are not there. It is a very strange world that we have created. In one bedroom there are at least four people. Already the bedrooms are so small, too difficult for two people; and in the bed there are four people, or even more. These two people who are making love are not 98
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
there: the man is thinking of some Hollywood actress, the woman is thinking of Muhammad Ali. So, there are four people. Who is making love to whom? These two people are simply going through the gestures of love -- they are not present -- mechanical gestures of love. And then they ask, “Is there any meaning in life?” You go on losing every moment by your absence. WHEN I WAS A STUDENT, my principal in the high school was continuously troubled by my absence from the school. My family was troubled. I would start going to school, but never reach there. Life was so much, and so many things were happening on the way... and the school was almost one mile away from the house. The principal called me one day and said, “You are almost always absent.” I said, “That’s where you are wrong.” He said, “What do you mean?” I said, “I am always present wherever I am. To be absent is not my style of life. And what can I do? -- this one mile between the school and my house.... A magician was doing his tricks on the street, and I became present there. It was far more interesting than your teachers, and
I learned more than I could have learned here -- because whatever your teacher is saying I can read in the book, but I will never meet that magician again. And he did such beautiful tricks that when he was finished, I followed him to his tent outside the city. “He asked me, ‘Son, why are you following me?’ I said, ‘You are getting old. Don’t you want your tricks to live on even when you are gone?’ He said, ‘That seems to be meaningful! -- you can come in. Many people have asked me to teach them the tricks, but not in this way.’ So, I have been with the magician. “Life is a bigger school than your school. And I am, each moment, present wherever I am. To be absent is not my style of life, so you please take your words back.” He said, “In that case I will have to see your father.” I said, “You can see anybody you like, but remember that my father knows me perfectly well. Just let me be informed when you are coming so I can also be present there. You both will be absent -- because my father is continuously busy with his business, and you are busy with who is absent, who is present. At least let somebody into that meeting who is present!” I told him, “Be honest
99
The Times of Canada - Oct 2019
and sincere and tell me: Are you present right now?” He said, “My God, perhaps you are right. I was thinking of my buffalo -- she has not returned for two days.” I said, “You need not be worried, I know where she is. That’s the beauty of being present everywhere! I have seen her just by the side of the tent of the magician. Now what do you say: Was it more worthwhile my coming to the class, or finding your lost buffalo? You can go and catch hold of her.”
your whole life becomes just a caravan of lights. That’s the meaning. Death comes and goes, but the caravan continues. People are not there where they seem to be. This is why they go on missing the meaning of life. Just remain present to any small act you are doing. It does not matter -- you don’t have to do great acts, become a world conqueror, go to the moon, or stand on top of Everest; it does not matter what you do. Wherever you are, and whatever you are doing -- or not doing -- be present, and the meaning of life will start unfolding. It is tremendously blissful. But don’t seek it somewhere else -- in a church, in a temple, in a holy book. You will not find it. Even if you come across God -who, by the way, does not exist -- but even if you come across God, you will not be present. You may be thinking of your buffalo. It is good that God is not there; otherwise, he would be so embarrassed by all these saints of all the religions, because none of them is present to the moment. They are living a life somewhere else in the tomorrows -- and today goes on slipping by, and the tomorrow never comes. Finally comes death, not tomorrow. Life is today! Tomorrow is death. So, when you come across death, it is a great shock that life has gone by and you have not been able to find any meaning in it. And now there is no tomorrow left, and you are accustomed to search for meaning in the tomorrows. But you have been told about, taught about, prepared for, tomorrows. If you understand me... I want you always to be present wherever you are. It does not matter where you are; just be totally present, and every small act, by your presence, will become lighted up, and you will know that 100

ypertension is very common now a days. Hypertension is called Raktchap in Ayurvedic. Ayurvedic treatment and diagnosis are based on Tridosha concept-Vata,Pitta and Kapha. These are three energies predominant in the human body. If these energies are working good in the body then there is no disease in the body and imbalance of any of these Tridosha results in any disease. The increase in blood pressure depends upon a person’s age, sex, physical and mental activities, family history, and diet. According to Ayurveda The oxygenated blood that is ejected out of the heart firstly which is distributed throughout the body and simultaneously the deoxygenated blood returns back to the heart via blood vessels. This return of blood towards the heart is controlled by Vata especially Samana Vata.
of the heart and distributes it throughout the body. Thus, it can be concluded that systolic blood pressure which is attained during the contraction of the heart is controlled by Vyana Vata. The rate of its pulse generation is controlled by the autonomic nervous system via sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve fibres emerging from the brain. It is the Prana Vata that is situated in the brain and does dhamani dharana (arterial perpetuation). Thus, systolic blood pressure is controlled by Vyana Vata and Prana Vata and they control circulation. In general, Vata controls all the neural mechanisms. Ashtang Hridya (Chapter in Ayurvedic Book) describes raktchap as under:
“VYANO HRIDISITHTA KRITSAN DEHCHAARI MAHAJAVA GATYAPAKSHE PRONTKSHEPANIMESHONMESHNADIKA PRAYA SARVA KRIASTASMIN PRATOBADHA SHARIRNAAM” It means Vyana Vata is located in the heart, it speedily moves throughout the body, performs functions such as flexion and extension, opening and closing of eye lids etc. All the activities in the body are regulated by Vyana Vata. tension vessels of the heart and arteries and there is no active push by the heart. Thus, diastolic BP can be considered under the domain of Kapha dosha especially Avalambaka Kapha.
CAUSES OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE : Unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyles are the main causes of hypertension. Most of the food items that we consume – fast foods or items packed with preservatives and chemicals – create digestive problems in the body. Impaired digestion leads to accumulation of ama (toxins), which further lead to the high blood pressure. The food we eat is digested by our digestive fire (jatharagni) to produce nutrient plasma. This plasma nourishes all other dhatus (body tissues) and aids in the production of healthy blood, which circulates all over the body through various channels (srotas). However, if digestion is impaired, the nutrient plasma ends up producing digestive impurities or ama. This ama mixes with plasma and makes it sama (combined with ama) or heavy. As a result, the blood thus produced also becomes heavy or sticky. This heavy blood (laden with impurities) circulates through various channels and toxins start accumulating in weaker channels of the body. When accumulated in the heart’s channels, these toxins cause narrowing of the channels. The blood has to therefore end up exerting more pressure to circulate through these channels, leading to the condition of high blood pressure.Stress, anxiety and negative mental feelings also cause increase in
blood pressure.History of BP in the family, obesity, lack of exercise, consumption of high-fat and low-fiber diet, excessive intake of tea, coffee, and refined foods are also reason for high blood pressure. .

Once you learn how to decorate flower pots using this method, you’ll be looking for old pots to try out your new skill! MATERIALS: • Terra cotta flower pots • Tiles or broken china pieces • Tile cutters • Polymer-fortified thin-set mortar • Sanded group • Hammer • Butter knife • Gloves • Wire brush and cloth • Buckets for mixing mortar and grout

Then chalk the design layout onto the pot STEP 2 Mix a polymer-fortified thin-set mortar with water until it’s the consistency of peanut butter. Spread it on one tile piece at a time with a butter knife and stick the tile to the pot. Repeat, leaving space between pieces as shown. Let set overnight.
