We are excited to present the much awaited Vaisakhi edition of The Times of Canada. This edition includes a lot of informative, entertaining articles along-with interviews and profiles of many achievers from our community. This issue is dedicated to the awesome work done by our fellow citizens be it in terms of business or community work. Our cover is dedicated to Western Community College’s “Bachelor of Hospitality Management” course. This is Fraser Valley’s first of its kind course. The spring has sprung and the beautiful cherry blossoms are making the beautiful Lower Mainland even more beautiful. As Robin Williams said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying, Let’s Party!”, The Times of Canada is bringing its Vaisakhi Gala back with full entertainment and no more restrictions. This year melodious Punjabi singer Kanth Kaler will perform during our Vaisakhi Gala. We are so happy to see the world getting back to normality after last couple of difficult and stressful years. So many concerts and events are happening around the town. We wish you all a colorful and joyous spring!

arnaaz Sandhu from India has made the country proud by winning the coveted Miss Universe 2021 title after over two decades. Previously, only two Indians have worn the crown – Sushmita Sen in 1994, and Lara Dutta in 2000. Chandigarh-born Harnaaz’s 1.5 monthlong journey in Israel representing India at the international pageant has been nothing short of a “ride full of love, fun, and immense hard work”. On qualifying for the top 2 rounds, the 21-year-old was asked, “What advice would you give to young women on how to deal with the
pressures they face today?” “The biggest pressure the youth of today is facing is to believe in themselves, to know that you are unique and that’s what makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let’s talk about more important things that’s happening worldwide. This is what you need to understand. Come out, speak for yourselves because you are the leader of your life, you are the voice of your own. I believed in myself and that’s why I am standing here today”, she said. She beat 80 contestants, including first runner-up Miss Paraguay Nadia Ferreira, and second runner-up Miss South Africa
Lalela Mswane, to make it to the top. In the top 5 round, she was asked, “Many people think climate change is a hoax, what would you do to convince them otherwise?” “My heart breaks to see how nature is going through a lot of problems, and it is all due to our irresponsible behavior. I totally feel that this is the time to take action and talk less. Because, our each action could save or kill nature. Prevent and protect is better than repent and repair and this is what I am trying to convince you guys today”.

MOUNTAIN BIKING: COAST MOUNTAIN RANGE– Technical “shore riding” (aka “free riding”) got its start on Vancouver’s North Shore. But there’s high-octane single track all over the area’s rugged Coast Mountains, overlooking 27,000 km (16,777 mi) of Pacific coastline all the way north to Alaska. Obviously, ride the North Shore’s old growth, lichen-draped cedar forests at Mt. Fromme and Mt. Seymour. But you’ll want to hit alpine resort Whistler, too, for the Top of the World trail. Expect dramatic view lines and 5,000 vertical feet of flow, berms and switchbacks passing three climate zones, tundra, glaciers, lakes and granite cliffs as you descend the back side of Whistler Mountain.
VIA FERRATA: GOLDEN– Not for the vertigo-challenged, via ferrata is a rock climbing-rappelling-hiking hybrid involving steel cable, rung and ladder routes attached to sheer cliff faces. Beginner or advanced climbers alike

Nimbus with its 1,969-ft-high (600-m) suspended bridge, the longest route in North America, accessible only by helicopter. There’s always summit bagging, too. HIKING: KOOTENAY ROCKIES–
Grandeur is on offer in Kootenay National Park, and no more so than on the backcountry Rockwall Trail. Allow three to five days to traverse the 55 km (34 mi) through lupin-carpeted valleys and past brilliant blue Floe Lake, towering and craggy mountain passes, waterfalls and streams, and the trail namesake’s hulking orange limestone cliffs known as the Paint Pots. Best from July to October, the trek is tough, but well worth it. Come prepared, reserve

and in the Saw Mills for the first 8 years. Those were the beautiful days of my life. The East Indian community was small but there were parties almost every weekend.
y name is Ashok Kumar Mohan. I am popularly known as Ash Mohan in the business circle. I was born and raised in Sirhind Punjab. After graduating from Punjabi University, Patiala in 1973, I moved to Europe. There I worked and travelled in almost 6 European countries. My Sister who was an RN in Penticton General Hospital sponsored me and on July 31, 1980 I arrived in the town of Summerland, British Columbia.
In 1984, I got married to the beautiful lady Kiran from Khanna India. She arrived here in Canada 4 months after our wedding. After marriage as usual life changed big time. We were blessed with 3 beautiful children, eldest being my daughter Neha and the 2 sons Sumeet and Amit. In 1988, I got a job in the maintenance Department in Summerland School Distt. It was a good secure semigovernment well-paying job. My wife also worked part-time since she was looking after the children too.
Summerland is a beautiful small town on the west side of the Lake Okanagan. Summerland is roughly 14 km on the north side of Penticton. Summerland and Penticton at that time had probably around 60 to 70 East Indian families living there. There were a couple of saw mills and a modular home factory in this area where most of our East Indian people worked. There were a lot of fruit orchards and vineyards too which provided lot farming jobs in this area to the people. I also worked in the farms
We got into construction business in 1989. I built around 10 spec homes initially. The market crash occurred in 1992. It was at that time when pandit Gyan Chand Shastri ji and Shri Bhimsen Nayyar came to meet us in Summerland. They were collecting donations for Lakshmi Narayan Mandir in Surrey those days. They motivated us to form a Hindu society in the valley. It was with their motivation and guidance here in Okanagan Valley we formed a charitable society named

OKANAGAN HINDU TEMPLE AND CULTURAL SOCIETY in July month of 1992. A constitution was drafted, and the society was registered. I was elected as the president of the society. With Ishwar’s blessings, on 1993’s Guru Purnima, the Okanagan Hindu Society had its own Temple. I feel proud to say that our society is doing really well. Everybody co-operates and gets along well. We never had an election in the last 30 years. There is unanimously selected committee every year. As I mentioned earlier while working with the Local School Board, I got involved in construction business. I developed some subdivisions and built spec homes. This arose an interest for Real Estate business in me. In 2004, I got my Real Estate license from UBC. I started selling Real Estate in the City of Kelowna. From day 1 my business was a success and kept growing with the time. There was never a year when I did not receive any awards in sale. I am always in top 2 or 3 salesmen in my company of 120+ Realtors. It is all because of my clients that I am at the top. I serve them honestly. Money is not my priority; it never had been. Smile on my client’s face is the biggest commission cheque I receive. I love people and love to serve them. I believe that, “Be honest In your dealings and be transparent success will come to you”. SAFETY MATTERS S afety is everybody’s business. Making safety your habit is extremely important. We are so busy in handling our day-to-day business that we almost forget that we are also responsible for not just our own safety, but for everyone else’s. In my 10 plus years of being in the trucking industry, I know that safety is the key to a successful trucking business.
Fleet safety is very important. Whether you are driving a commercial truck or working in the office, being compliant is very important in the trucking industry. There are so many aspects of safety to consider when you own a trucking company. Company registration, NSC certificate, company authorities, hiring trustworthy commercial drivers, record keeping, and fuel tax filing are just some of the crucial aspects of safety to consider. Employers must keep in mind the safety of their commercial truck drivers and the general public who they share the road with. It is their responsibility to keep vehicles in good working condition. Vehicle maintenance plays a very important role in this. The vehicle inspections are crucial. Roadside
inspections are not an issue if pretrip and post-trip inspections are done correctly. Getting the vehicle defects repaired in a timely manner can save time and money and it also keeps the vehicle in a good working condition. It is required by the National Safety Code and the US Department of Transportation that all the commercial truck drivers must inspect their vehicles for any sign of defect before they start their first trip of Kavita the day. The truck driver must ensure that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition.

They shift their entire mindset and way of living to preserve their spots on the team. But sometimes hard work and commitment aren’t enough and they find themselves relying on unknown forces and superstitious beliefs to help them secure their team’s win.

Here are some of the strangest superstitions that our favorite athletes have indulged in.
LYOTO MACHIDA He is known professionally as The Dragon and is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and karateka, currently signed with Bellator MMA. He owes his success to him drinking his own urine. He believes in the success “urine therapy” brings with it, and how it is something he drinks every morning, like a natural medicine. This is knowledge and practice that he replicates from his father.

He is a former left fielder in major League Baseball and made a major league debut on June 9th, 1982. He wasn’t considered to be an exceptional player, but rather an exceptionally weird person. He would never turn right while on the field, and if he did he would have to spin left. Additionally, he had a rather emphasis on the necessity of touching someone back, after being touched by them. If Rhomberg was touched while sliding into second, he’d chase the fielder down and touch him back every time. This would also go for coaches and teammates as well.
LES MILES Les Miles is an American Football coach, and in 2007 he left the LSU Tigers football team to a win in the BCS National Championship Game. Before every game, and especially in high-stress situations he will indulge in eating the grass from the turf. FROZEN APPLE MARGARITA T o make this frozen drink into a mock-tail, swap the tequila for an extra cup of sparkling apple juice.
INGREDIENTS 1. 1 lime, halved 2. 2 cups (500ml) Sparkling apple 3.

METHOD
Place salt on a plate. Run the cut side of the lime around the rims of serving
glasses. Dip in the salt to coat. Place sparkling apple juice, tequila, if using, lime rind, lime juice and ice in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour evenly among the glasses. Decorate with apple slices and lime zest.

GUJRATI CUISINE

any of us associate Gujarat only with dhokla, khakra or the drool-worthy Gujarati Thali. But there is more to Gujarati food than that. North Gujarat, Kacch, Kathiyawad and Surti Gujarat are four major regions of Gujarat and each of these bring their own uniqueness to Gujarati cuisine.
KHAMAN– A scrumptious and sound steamed bite produced using crisply ground lentils and chickpea flour, it is fundamentally the same as its unassuming cousin, the worldwell known - dhokla. To set up the khaman, the khaman flour blend is bubbled alongside turmeric, salt and preparing pop to make it light and soft. It is then cut up into blocks and
as a rule decorated with mustard seeds, coriander leaves, sev and hacked onions. Generally served in daily papers in farsan (nibble) shops with tart chutneys and a few bits of green chilies. SEV TAMETA NU SHAK– A sweet, salty, tart, zesty shak (vegetable planning) produced using tomatoes and sev is a most loved in Gujarati families, particularly among kids. To set up this dish, diced tomatoes and onions are sautéed with oil and flavors and after that cooked in steam. The Knot T
he Knot which I am going to introduce is an Indian Wedding Knot solemnized in district Ludhiana of Punjab state
on 18.02.2022 in a traditional Punjabi culture, though it has some fragrance of Rajasthani culture. As said “Marriages are settled in
heaven but celebrated on earth. The sacred unit of two unknown souls is written by birth”, truly suits this couple because Vinayak ‘The Groom’

is from Ludhiana & Nitu ‘The Bride’ from Kota Rajasthan. The couple has good academic qualifications as Vinayak studied engineering and did his M.Tech. from Bits-Pilani and is presently a software engineer in Barclays, whereas Nitu did her MBA from Army Institute of Management in Calcutta and is doing a job in ZS Associates a multi-national conglomerate of USA. Both are presently settled in Pune. The prewedding shoot was done at studio Futureforward Gurgaon by the professionals of Maan Photography as it allows both partners to get to know each other in a better way. The long wedding started on 05.02.2022, i.e. on the eve of Basant Panchmi when the Halavai sat at home and all sweets were prepared in a traditional way, the process continued till 10.02.2022. A big and difficult task was its distribution along with the invitation cards. The cards got ready from leading vendor Santosh Packers and the family did this great job perfectly. The other big task which I noticed, was the lodging arrangements for the Bride’s side and the relatives, which was nicely done by the family. To get the blessings of the Almighty an Akhand Path of Ramayana was carried out at home on 14.02.2022 and the sampan was done on 15.02.2022 followed by Sankirtan by leading Bhajan singers & Bhoj to Brahmins and the guests. In the evening Maiyan ceremony was also carried out by all the ladies of the family. The affection in relations was visible in the wedding as Mamas, cousins & friends of the groom along with family visited from Canada, USA & UK by taking a huge risk of Covid and leaving behind all their business and responsibilities. Many relatives came from distant locations of the
country like Bombay, Bangalore, UP, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Delhi, Haryana etc. The most important day for the couple was Wednesday, the 16th Feb. 2022 i.e. the day on which Shagun & Ring Ceremonies were performed in Hotel K.G. Ludhiana. The function was packed with fun & love. Hall was decently decorated with flowers, the guests were enjoying the delicious snacks & food, the couple was looking charming & beautiful but the best of all was the solo performance given by Ankush ‘the Bhabi’ of the groom.
Vijay entertainers were not behind, as lady artist was singing Jaggo Boliyan and songs so sweetly. All Ladies in Punjabi dresses were dancing by picking up the pot on their heads that were decorated with candles
The best moment was the secret/ surprise entry of Mr. Vinay Sharma from Vancouver Canada along with his family & Mr. Teji Sandhu (singer & associate of celebrity Kapil Sharma) and then their dance and bhangra show on the beats of Heera Dholi on the same night at home. The next evening i.e. on 17.02.2022 was the Jago & Sangeet with friends and relatives at Hotel K. G. I noticed that though the family was tired but not an inch of tiredness was seen on their faces. The evening was again packed with full fun & love. Drink lovers were taking Patiala shahi Peg and dancing to the beats.

(in earlier times instead of sending invitation cards, this was the way to invite the nearest to the wedding and to wake them up to join the festivities). It was a super evening and a fantastic party. Here is not the end, the super day has come i.e. Friday, 18th Feb. 2022. With the first ray of sun, there was so much excitement in the family, everyone was busy. At 10 am Pandit Ji came for the Puja, Havan and Saint ceremony, which is to be performed by the Mamas of Groom. All were busy to dress up nicely, as the
Sehra-bandi of the Groom was to be carried out in the evening. A person had reached for tying the Jodhpuri turbans as all-male family members were going to wear the black colour Jodhpuri dress being a dress theme. At exactly 4.30 p.m. Sehra-bandi started, the Groom was nicely dressed up in off-white Sherwani & was looking charming & smart. Pandit Ji performed the Puja and Sehra was tied on the forehead of the Groom by his Sisters in the sounds of traditional wedding songs. A well-decorated Ghori was waiting for the Groom and finally, the Groom rode on the Ghori and Baraat (wedding procession) moved for the wedding place - Ludhiana Garden, after bowing to the Almighty in Shiv Shakti Temple. At 8.00 p.m. the Baraat was at the entrance gate along with Groom who was sitting on a beautifully decorated Rath along with Savala. Now the sky was filled up with firecrackers, the well-dressed up the traditional band as well as Fauji Band was presenting its best show. The hall was fantastically decorated with flowers, diyas, rangolis etc. At last, after Milni of both Families, the Baraat entered the venue along with the Groom.

Finally, the Knot tied, the Bride & Groom took phere around the sacred fire amidst the Vedic mantras, which is a 5000-year-old Vedic tradition and got united for the whole life as said by Jean-Paul Sarte “In love, One and One are One”. The Doli came at home in the early morning. In the last, I can only say, it left unforgettable memories in my life and I wish the couple, a happy and successful journey on the wheels of life. The wedding ended with the blessings of forefathers and the introduction of the bride to the family.
The ambiance of the stage was so great, where the Jaimala ceremony was to be performed, Groom sat there and was eagerly waiting for the unforgettable moments of his life. The Bride draped in a beautiful wedding dress entered the hall under the shade (Chadar) of flowers along with her brothers. It was an amazing moment; finally, Jaimala/ ritual ceremony took place. Many dignitaries by setting aside COVID

S
anjana Karthik is a grade 12 student from Semiahmoo Secondary. She is an avid learner who has taken UPENN courses, Special Olympic certifications, and received other forms of academic recognition. She has dedicated over 1000+ hours of service since she was in grade 6, dedicating time and energy to volunteering and fundraising for reputable not for profits including Special Olympics, Canucks Autism Network, Canadian cancer society,
UBC Geer up, Westminister Senior Home, South Surrey Recreation Center, Closelook Productions and more. Through these experiences, she has developed entrepreneurial experiences and formed leadership roles in her school as executives of Medhopeful, Volunteering, and Tutoring Club. These activities have provided her a basis to continue efforts to her writing organization, Your Words Matter To Us, which is supported by reputable magazines
and has received community grants. Her love for writing stemmed from when she was in grade 9 and has continued into having work published in places like Poetry Institute of Canada, Polar Expressions, Brown Girl Magazine, Stigma-Free Society, Aaj Magazine, and more, and she is blessed to have also had her work shared with the Mayor of Whiterock in 2020 and 2021, and her book, Life Lessons Along the Way, to be published on reputable sites and publishing companies.

WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE BOOK YOU PUBLISHED, AND WHEN WAS IT PUBLISHED? WHAT’S THE COST OF THE BOOK? The name of the book is “Life
Lessons Along the Way” and this book was published during the summer of 2021. It costs 3.99 USD, which is about the cost of a simple coffee, and is a quick read of just 14 minutes!
WHAT IS THE BOOK ABOUT?
“Life Lessons Along the Way” is a poetry book that encompasses life lessons that I, Sanjana Karthik, have come across throughout my life. With 28 poems and 28 quotes, this poetry collection contains lessons that revolve around: gratitude, starting over, perseverance, positivity, identity struggles, and much more. Who knows? It might bring insight into your own life as well.
WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION TO WRITE THIS BOOK? I fell in
love with poetry when I was in grade 6, and tried finding a home for the work I had nurtured through writing groups and open mic events. I began to dive into the creation of 3 manuscripts - one of them being on worldwide issues, the other inspired by a spirituality books, and the one now published on life lessons. I found it important to document the lessons I have dived in over my youth so one day I could reflect on them, and see if they still hold for me. I also hoped that the lessons I had arrived to would glance at someone else into some insight I had stumbled into, and potentially give them the clarity I had struggled to realize over the years. Additionally, I always longed to get my work published, and while eventually that desire was fulfilled, I wanted to take matters into my hands, and execute this through self-publishing. Having a collection of the poems I nurture, edit,

and present before your eyes is an accomplishment I always wanted to be able to carry, and I’m glad it has now turned into something more tangible than another goal.
WHO IS THIS BOOK FOR? For people of all ages, and backgrounds, although it may be more suitable for those 10 and above. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE PEOPLE SHOULD PURCHASE A COPY OF THIS BOOK? I believe that the
poems’ messages and quotes would provide some insight into everyone’s life, or at the very least another person’s experience to set gazes too. It is easy and quick to read while costing very little money and bestowing some profit for my university tuition as well. For those with a desire to write poetry or a taste for this wonderful art, I strongly encourage you to see if the lines resonate with you, and the rhythms connect with you.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE POEM AND QUOTE IN THE BOOK? I enjoyed writing all of
these poems, and they all tug on a fragment of my heart. They were conceived with much effort, love, and devotion. One of my favorite poems was “SomeBody”. I enjoyed being able to present the image of a body, and something less than a sexual idea, but more of a “person”, “a human being”, “someone’s loved one” or “a friend”. I think society’s misconceptions and false images lead us to the perception that there is an “ideal body type” that we need to work towards, or that our bodies are something people desire or long to possess. I believe with these mindsets we tend to lose track of the life within our body, and their story, which I encourage everyone to set their attention to instead.
WHAT WAS THE WRITING, EDITING, AND PUBLISHING PROCESS LIKE? I began writing this
book in grade 9 and received editing support from the author, Cristy Waston. Her edits were immaculate and service was generous. I truly could not have completed this project without her 3 rounds of editing, her zoom calls, and emails filled with insightful information. I first worked on completing my poems and finding appropriate quotes to go alongside them. Subsequently, worked on arranging them in an order that would flow into a beautiful and rhythmic overall story. After every round of edit, I would revise the work I had been sent until the work was edited to the best of our abilities. With the help of Cristy Waston, I also formatted my work in such a manner that it could be printed by Staples and made into a Chapbook. However, my publishing journey did not cease here and continued into the summer of 2021, where my dad provided me tremendous support. He helped me with getting my work formatted and ready for publishing on Kindle, Draft2digital, and StreetLib. He also supported me with marketing efforts and connecting with his networks in pursuit of purchasing a copy of these books. I am grateful for the support system that has led me to this moment of considering myself a published author.

ELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BACKGROUND? My name
is Angela Arora. I am a passionate golfer. I live, breathe, and eat golf. I go to Frank Hurt Secondary School, and I am currently in Grade 12. I will graduate high school this June. My parents arrived in Canada in 1999.
WHY AND WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO JOIN SPORTS? I
started playing golf when I was 6 years old. My dad used to take me with him to the golf course. On my 6th birthday, my mom gifted me a cute little Barbie Golf set. When I was 10 years old my dad took me to watch the CP Women’s Open at Vancouver Golf Club. I watched Lexi Thompson, Inbee Park and Paula Creamer play. At the end of the round Lexi Thompson came up to me out of all her fans and gave me her signed glove and said, “Thanks for watching!” I was starstruck and at that very moment I wanted to become just like her, an LPGA Tour Star and inspire young girls around the world.
HOW HAS YOUR LIFE BEEN AS A SPORTSWOMAN? As an athlete/
sportswoman I practice every day 3-8 hours depending on school schedule. I play around 15 tournaments every year in Canada/Internationally. I have a whole team that helps support me. My team consists of my personal golf coach, Tyler McNeil, the Team Canada Coaches, Robert Ratcliffe, Jennifer Greggain and Jeff MacDonald. Team Canada fitness coach Bryan Katz and my personal fitness coaches are, Jason Glass and Lindsay Manion.
WHAT STRATEGIES AND LIFESTYLE ARE YOU USING TO KEEP YOURSELF FIT? My fitness trainers help me work on strength with workouts that I do 4 times a week. I do stretch exercises twice a day and lastly, I take care of my diet as per my nutritionist.
WHAT ARE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS AS A SPORTSWOMAN TILL NOW? My top achievements include: -Member of the Golf Canada National

YOGI’S KITCHEN A fter moving to Canada in 2015, Yogesh Chawla realized that people here were very busy with work, house chores, kids, studies etc. They had no time to cook for themselves. They would end up eating out at least one meal daily or would skip a meal. Mr. Chawla wanted to come up with a solution for this problem. r. Roop Dhillon, the owner of Pizza 64 came to Canada in 1994. Before coming to Canada, Mr. Dhillon completed B.Sc. in economics from Khalsa College, Amritsar. During his initial years in Canada, he worked in a variety of jobs before opening the super successful pizza store business, Pizza 64. The Times of Canada had a chat with Mr. Dhillon about Pizza 64.

worked in many jobs like in autobody shop, pizza shop etc. I also drove longhaul truck. I always wanted to have my own pizza store but it took me time to save up in order to accomplish this goal. 2008 was the first year when we opened our first pizza store in Surrey,
BC on 64 Avenue. hence the name Pizza 64.

you start doing what you love then sky is the limit. Life has been very busy at times. Time management and prioritizing the right things are some of the key components to master as an entrepreneur.

programs by professional artists, social activities like arranging picnics, bus trips, group birthdays, awareness seminars for financial investments, scams & frauds and assisting seniors with Free Tax Filing to low-income seniors, also special events like Unique Pot Luck where variety of mouthwatering dishes being prepared by senior members. But in March 2020, came the COVID 19 Pandemic, all seniors were locked in, felt isolated, depressed and anxious. Mr. Surendra Handa went to work by calling members to know how they were doing. He did attend 6 weeks course of Learning Basic Digital Skills for Health Literacy organized by iCON Digital Medicine Department of UBC Vancouver and taught this course back to the seniors, who had limited knowledge of technology, via Zoom meetings. Thus, he demonstrated innovation and made measurable difference in older adults during the COVID pandemic.
MR. SURENDRA HANDA M r. Surendra Handa has been coordinator of Vedic Seniors Parivar Centre of Vedic Hindu Cultural Society of BC at Lakshmi Narayan Temple Surrey BC since 2008. He also Coordinates one of BC CRN’S newest APNI Community Response Networks located in Surrey, which is home to the Country’s second largest percentage of South Asian Canadians, for standing against Elder Abuse, Elder Neglect and Self-Neglect etc.
He puts his heart and soul into creating a warm & comforting space for Seniors to escape isolation, have healthier life style by managing chronic ailments and for over all good physical health and mental well-being of all seniors. He has been organizing weekly events like Yoga & Meditation classes to enhance quality of life by qualified yoga instructor, organizing health seminars by health professionals, nutritionists, RCMP for personal safety, recreational
Travel is a favorite past time of Mr. Surendra Handa, he loves to take other senior members along with him to travel in a group and everyone pays their own way. Most of the seniors of Vedic Seniors Parivar Centre have explored all the Tourist Attractions in the Lower Mainland and several countries of the world together with him since 2010. Seniors have been to Caribbean, Mexico, China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, South America, Thailand, Dubai, India, Sri Lanka, Singapore and 3 times to Europe exploring different cities, Australia and New Zealand, he has always travelled with a group of minimum 50 seniors to maximum 70 seniors. Mr. Surendra Handa is a kind and selfless volunteer, who has worked against all odds for the benefit of seniors without expectations of rewards and continues serving the Community Seniors with the greatest humility.

il Diyaan Gallan is an initiative focused on breaking the Stigma around Mental Health in the South Asian community. The goal is to change how we view and take care of our mental health so that we see it in on a spectrum of our overall well-being. On this spectrum is our physical health, spiritual health, relational health and mental health.
Our mission is to promote the following: KNOWLEDGE: promote learning about mental health
AWARENESS: offer tools and strategies to increase one’s own awareness of their mental health experiences and needs. COMFORT: normalizing the
experiences of mental health to create safe spaces for people to talk openly about their mental health challenges.

The Dil Diyaan Gallan initiative began in two homes, with two different stories. In one home, a father, Sunil, consoled his 17 year old daughter, Chahat, as she cried endlessly struggling with overwhelming emotions and thoughts related to relationship challenges with friends. After crying and talking they realized they were lucky to have this safe space to openly express themselves. The two came to realize that many people struggle silently. Sunil, having worked in social services most of his life, in India and in Canada, and Chahat a grade 12 student, noticed how many people in the South Asian community struggle in silence with their
and cared for in this community. In the second home, a clinical counsellor, Raman, was dealing with grief after the loss of two young cousin brother’s within a year. Two young, vibrant, beautiful souls, gone because of the stigma around mental health, the stigma around what it means to be strong. Strength in our community is still seen as silent enduring of whatever life throws your way. Weakness is seen as sharing and expressing your struggle, causing isolation. The silence took two of Raman’s dear ones too soon. Raman had been struck with a deep desire to help break the stigma around mental health so no other family has to feel such a devastating loss. Yet, so many homes, so many individuals are feeling the wrath of this stigma. Mothers and fathers have lost their children, brothers and sisters have lost their siblings, and right now, in this moment, as you read this, so many people are struggling with their mental health silently, and alone.

Now, success doesn’t lie in the achievement of a goal, although that’s what the world considers success; it lies in the journey toward the goal. We’re successful as long as we’re working toward something we want to bring about in our lives. That’s when the human being is at his or her best.
People with all the disabilities or people having nothing but still achieving everything there is something that differentiates them from others. They have goals. They have a burning desire to succeed despite all obstacles and handicaps. They know exactly what they want; they think about it every day of their lives. They have a vision of exactly what they want to do, and that vision carries them over every obstacle.
If you have a goal that you find worthy of you as a person, a goal that fills you with joy at the thought of it, believe me, you’ll reach it. As you are going to achieve your goal think about the next goal beforehand. That’s the only way you are progressive in nature. Your goals should be concise and you should progressively work towards them. You should have a list of goals
so that you know your progress and can add new goals to your list. Life offers so way too much but when asked what we are working for their vague answers like money but in reality, everyone is working for their goals and their life accomplishments. You will become what you think. Your personality is a reflection of your thoughts, One should work on one goal at a time. People tend to work on everything together and end up doing nothing and just being confused making excuses for their failures. By thinking every morning, every night, and as many times during the day as you can about this exciting single goal you’ve established for yourself, you actually begin moving toward it and bringing it toward you. So decide upon your goal. Stick to it. Make it a necessity. Remember your goals every morning and night and as many times during the day as you conveniently can. By so doing, you will imply your goal into your subconscious mind. You’ll see yourself as having already attained your goal, and do that every day without fail, and it will become a habit before you realize it. You will soon become the person you really wanted to become.
This inspiration, this dream, this goal, invisible to the entire world except the person holding it, is responsible for perhaps every great advancement and accomplishment. What the mind can perceive and believe, it can achieve. We become what we think about. When we focus on an exciting goal, we reach it by any means. e tend to think that our understanding of mental health is only way to understand the mind, but learning about various cultural perspectives on health and mental wellness can benefit us all. Dr. Arun Garg describes himself as

“a global physician with a passion to lower the burden of chronic diseases, based on integrative thinking, which is the fusion of the best of East and the best of West.” Born in India, Dr. Garg left at nineteen and moved to Saskatchewan, where he met his wife and earned a PhD in Biochemistry. Amongst his many achievements
and accolades, he co-founded the Canada India Network Society, a non-profit society in B.C. that strives to improve the health of people of India and Canada and aims to fuse philosophies of the West and East. His expertise and worldview are informed by both Canadian medicine and Indian philosophy, including yoga philosophy,

giving him a unique insight into various aspects of mental health. In the West, we tend to think of yoga as downward dogs and nice stretches to relieve stress and tone our abs. But the yoga tradition and philosophy are much more complex. As Dr. Garg says, “Yoga isn’t an exercise program of postures and movements, it’s a system used to reach the inner mind. All these physical stretches are really designed to take you into your inner self.” This mastery of the thought process is considered to be the foundation of mental wellness. “To understand who you are,” Dr. Garg elaborates, “you need to understand internally how you function, in the sense of internal knowledge. This is yoga, and it’s described in the context of the mind.” In India, there are many different words for “mind”, so it’s hard to express all the nuances of just how complex this word is. For the sake of clarity, Dr. Garg describes the mind as the place where thoughts are generated. Yoga allows a person to have greater internal understanding and control over their thoughts and how they process everyday situations. “Mental wellness is related to your own thoughts,” he adds, and these philosophies allow us greater control over our thoughts and therefore over our mental wellness.

And that only comes when there is an understanding from inside oneself.” But he observes that internal interventions such as yoga, meditation and mindfulness are more difficult as
they “require discipline and practice, practice, practice,” made more challenging by our dependence on technology and instant gratification. Of-course, yoga doesn’t resonate with everyone and won’t necessarily prevent or manage mental health challenges. But the concept of applying both external and internal interventions, whatever that means to the individual, can foster agency and wellbeing. Both reaching out for help and looking inwards to find balance and selfawareness can be a powerful combination. Dr. Arun Garg, Global Physician
Dr. Garg believes that modern medicine is brilliant for giving us a detailed, reductive understanding of how things function in the body, and for providing what he calls “external interventions” such as medication, where the person is often more of a passive passenger in their health. Ayurveda is another example of an external intervention or system of medicine that originated from India. Yoga is one way of practicing an “internal intervention,” something that an individual must practice and understand themselves. Nobody can do this for the person, and answers are sought within rather than from experts or health professionals. This kind of inner awareness can be very

Aditi Kini
Recipient ofBC’s Medal of Good Citizenship for 2021
struggled to keep their jobs, families have worked hard to make ends meet, businesses have grappled to survive, and kids have faced the challenges of new teaching methods and restricted interactions in cohorts. In these circumstances, high school student Aditi Kini has helped several affected communities through her mission to make a difference in her local community.

diti received the honour for service during the COVID-19 pandemic. A Grade 12 student at North Delta’s Seaquam Secondary, Aditi Kini, was among 31 people and one group from across the province was awarded the Medal of Good Citizenship during a virtual ceremony on Thursday, March 24, 2022. Aditi and her fellow 2021 honourees were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the well-being of their respective communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the past two years, people have
Aditi has helped several affected communities impacted by COVID-19 through her implementation of 17+ service-related projects raising around $50,000 to help hundreds of individuals and families in the Black, Indigenous and People of Color community, Indigenous youth in Northern B.C., school districts, the SPCA, hospitals, homeless shelters and single moms across B.C. Furthermore, she has initiated a sandwich-making initiative providing meals for the homeless at her school, Seaquam Secondary. An example of her initiatives is her partnership with a local SPCA location to aid their efforts to accommodate an
influx of abandoned animals during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, she virtually mobilized a team of youth who worked tirelessly to purchase quality food and supplies and set up storage sheds to reduce food wastage. In addition, due to COVID-19, hospitals were not allowing visitors to meet inpatients which impacted their mental health and recovery. To counteract this, Aditi purchased, packaged, and delivered entertainment packages consisting of puzzles, and word searches amongst other things to keep patients in the Royal Columbian Hospital occupied. Moreover, she has set up a Notfor-Profit Organization, “The New Horizons Foundation” www. thenewhorizonsfoundation.com to raise funds to provide e-learning opportunities and basic sanitary supplies to 12 schools in rural South India to promote the attendance of girls in schools. Aditi has built several networks with partner charitable organizations that will support her cause post-pandemic. Her ongoing community service was recognized by Justin Trudeau by presenting the Community Service award twice in 2020 and 2021. Aditi currently mentors and guides youth in their aspirations of identifying opportunities to make a difference and connects them with organizations that require support. She is a role model for reflected servant leadership and demonstrates exceptional attitude and perseverance. She inspires people around her to never stop giving back to the community.
