CORNISH CHRISTMAS This Week Begins the 45th Annual
Cornish Christmas Celebration!
B
ring the whole family to Downtown Grass Valley for the magical transformation from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to Christmas past with the 45th annual Cornish Christmas. Watch as Mill and Main Streets fill with the spirit of Christmas. Hear sleigh bells ring and minstrels sing classic Christmas carols to you. Toss a coin or two to a shiny faced street urchin as they play a harp or violin or entertain you with their magic tricks. Let the feeling of home enchant you as you wait for your chestnuts to be roasted over an open fire and warm your hands on hot cocoa or cider. Chat with friends and neighbors over their handcrafted treasures. Buy your cider from the girl scouts and meet your local firefighters and police officers as they enjoy a night out with their families. Entertain the kids with Santa’s Workshop where they can meet Santa, have their picture taken with him, color a picture, and decorate some cookies while you have the gifts you purchased downtown wrapped by a helpful little elf. Experience the taste of a traditional Cornish pasty, dine in one of our world-class restaurants, or find something delectable from one of the many food vendors. Open 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. every Friday night from November 23 to December 21. Admission is free and Downtown Grass Valley has several free parking lots within two blocks of all the street festivities. There is no shuttle this year from the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Call the Grass Valley Downtown Association at (530) 272-8315 for a free brochure and parking map.

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS
10 Reasons to Celebrate the Holidays at Victorian Christmas!
N
orthern California’s most fun Victorian Christmas event kicks off on December 5 and continues on three Wednesdays evenings and two Sunday afternoons through Sunday, December 23, 2012 on the streets of historic Nevada City. Victorian Christmas 2011 garnered splendid reviews. New guests and old flocked to Nevada City in record numbers. “With added entertainment and a record number of booths, the spirit and good feeling in the streets was inspiring,” says Cathy Whittlesey, Executive Director of the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce. “We look forward to an even more spectacular event this year.” Victorian Christmas has been a beloved tradition since 1978 and this December Nevada City’s picturesque downtown will transform once again into a Christmas card come to life. Join family and friends sharing holiday cheer and good tidings. Victorian Christmas features holiday activities for all ages: children’s pony rides, carriage rides, live entertainment, savory yuletide treats and libations, and of course, Father Christmas. There is oh so much to see, hear, feast upon and experience at Victorian Christmas. Whether you’ve been naughty or nice, we look forward to welcoming the best of the holiday season with you and yours. Ten (of the many!) Reasons to enjoy Victorian Christmas this year!
1. Season’s Greetings Come wander the lanes of Victorian Nevada City as the glow of twilight settles with the scent of pine boughs and freshly roasted chestnuts floating in the air, the sound of carolers and holiday merrymakers accompanying your stroll. Meet your friends and neighbors. Join with old and new friends for a drink of hot mulled cider and a few verses of your favorite holiday songs. You’ll be surprised by who you’ll see and celebrate with on the streets of our town during this festive time.

Come with family and friends, while rekindling fond memories and making new ones. And this year, why not add to the party by dressing
as a Victorian. We’re encouraging people to dress up and add to the Victorian flavor of the event. It’s easy and fun and you don’t have to spend lots of money or time to do it. You’ll find tips and ideas on our website at www.nevadacitychamber.com/events/victorian-clothing-tips.cfm.

They’ll appreciate that “something special” on their mantelpiece this year.
7. Cold Comfort Why not warm your hands next to chestnuts roasting on an open fire? We are welcoming back Cecil Snow, our favorite Victorian chimney sweep who will keep the fire going every evening of Victorian Christmas. Make sure you don’t miss this grand tradition.
10. Make it easy on yourself Why drive through holiday traffic to a distant mall when you can take a special $5 round-trip Holiday Shuttle to Victorian Christmas? Pickups are from the parking lots at the Nevada County Government Center at Highway 49 and Maidu Ave. Drop your group off in town and then catch the Shuttle. Return journeys are free for all. VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS ENTERTAINMENT
Why not add to the party by dressing as a Victorian? We’re encouraging people to dress up and add to the Victorian flavor. It’s easy and fun and you don’t have to spend lots of money or time to do it. Here are some simple ideas: • Wear a vest over high-collared shirt. • Put knee socks over jeans or pants to look like knickers. • Attach feathers to a broad-brimmed hat and put on a pair of long, elbow length gloves. • Push up your shirt sleeves with elastic at the elbows. • Tie a long scarf over a blouse, sweater, jacket etc.
Nevada City Winter Craft Fair 10 a.m.-7p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, $3 entrée
The Miners Foundry will once again be holding its independent, juried craft fair showcasing the region’s top Etsy vendors, artisans and do-it-yourself crafters. Find unique gifts among the handmade, original and vintage items that will fill the historic Miners Foundry to overflowing.
• Drape a shawl over a blouse or shirt. • Wear colorful suspenders over a plain, plaid or paisley shirt. • Wear a bow tie or string tie. • Try a top hat, a bowler or a fake handlebar mustache. • Add some ruffles. A ruffled apron over an ankle length skirt or a ruffled cap will make you a perfect Victorian.
Use your imagination! You can probably dress in a Victorian look by just being creative with the clothes in your closet.
From jugglers to fine musicians, carolers to storytellers, we have something for everyone. Warm up to a string quartet or watch Victorian characters strut their stuff against a backdrop of genuine Victorian shops and houses. Look for a full schedule of entertainment on our website at www.nevadacitychamber.com. Each night and afternoon of Victorian Christmas will be different---with jugglers, story tellers, Scottish dancers, traditional music, choirs, and so much more. You’ll want to come to this free event more than once!

Grass Valley’s 129th Donation Day Parade I
n the 19th century, here in Nevada County as throughout the country, problems of poverty prevailed. To alleviate the needs of some residents, a group of mine owner’s wives formed the Grass Valley Ladies Benevolent Society. The name was changed to the Grass Valley Ladies Relief Society in 1876. It is one of the oldest welfare institutions in the State of California. In 1883, the Society began a lasting partnership with the local schools. Inspired by a letter at Christmas to the editor of The Union from Caroline Meade Hanson, a program was initiated in which each student would bring a stick of wood and a potato to the school. A small donation, but the aggregate from several hundred school children would ease the needs of many. Thus, the tradition of Donation Day was born. Each year brought more gifts, great and small. Till teams were needed to carry them all: And the people, jubilant and gay, Decided to have the town band play. So every year on Donation Day, A long procession winds its way, Thro’ all the busy streets of town,
DONATION DAY PARADE 10 a.m. Dec. 17 in downtown Grass Valley
And happy throngs pass up and down, While the band plays and the children sing As they give so gladly, “Love’s offering.” (M.F.Rowe, 1918)
The tradition continued to grow. Soon merchants joined the school children adding hams, sacks of flour and merchandise. Sticks of wood and potatoes have grown into food boxes filled with canned goods, fresh produce and meat certificates. These boxes are distributed at Christmas time for those who need help. But, it is the parade that adds festivity to the holiday season, winding its way up Mill Street with bands, bag pipers and, of course, school children from throughout the county. There have been additional services and needs recognized by the Grass Valley Ladies Relief Society. Under the guidance of the school nurses, children’s dental care has become a focus. We handle requests for
help from other benevolent organizations. Requests are screened, discussed and voted on by membership always with our mission in mind: to improve the health and well being of the residents of western Nevada County. We provide scholarships for two local students: one for a single parent at Sierra College and a second for a local high school student. Our funding depends entirely on the generosity of individuals through cash donations and bequests. We do not seek or accept government funds. We have no paid employees. All monies or food donations remain in Nevada County. If you would like additional information or wish to donate to our organization our contact address is P.O. BOX 1132, Cedar Ridge, CA 95924. We will accept donations on parade day at Hennessey School or along the parade route; fill your bags with non-perishable, non-glass food items. Monetary donations will help us fill food boxes with fresh foods, fund local scholarships, and provide dental health for local school children. Thank you for helping others and keeping the history of Grass Valley alive. Come view the parade from the sidelines at 10 a.m. December 17 in downtown Grass Valley.
Christmas in Bethlehem Program
Sierra Presbyterian’s A Special Season of Worship
This December, Abundant Life Community Church will be hosting our 11th annual Christmas in Bethlehem displaying the glorious truth of Jesus Christ’s birth. More than 5,000 people in and around Nevada County have attended this free event over the years and we invite you to join us once again this year for our all new program. For three days in December, SHOWTIMES our church building will be transFriday, Dec. 7, 7-9 p.m., formed into the ancient town of Bethlehem. You will be taken Saturday, Dec. 8 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. back over 2,000 years to a night Sunday, Dec. 9 noon-3:30 p.m. that changed the world forever. You will find yourself in the middle of a busy Bethlehem marketplace; you will watch as shepherds have their peaceful night in the field interrupted by indescribable glory; and most importantly, you will feel what it was like to gaze in wonder at the baby Jesus lying in a manger. Our program this year will enable you to encounter the excitement of living through the events of the days of Jesus’ advent; when angels were appearing; shepherds were rejoicing; innkeepers were scurrying; and people were praying for the coming Messiah. As you will discover, much research has gone into both the set and the costumes, with our goal being to make them as authentic as possible. When you step into our sanctuary, you will truly feel as if you have stepped back in time. Our 25-minute program will give you a unique and memorable feel for what life was like the night Jesus was born, just over 2,000 years ago. As always, Christmas in Bethlehem is free event and is open to our entire community. Please plan to make Christmas in Bethlehem a part of your Christmas celebration this December. The shows will run every 30 minutes. Abundant Life Community Church is located at 10795 Alta Street in Grass Valley.
Have you ever felt like you’ve spent so much time and energy preparing for Christmas and when Christmas is over you feel like you missed it? There is so much to prepare for; including: outdoor decorations, indoor decorations, the tree, the shopping, the cooking, the baking, SPECIAL SEASON OF WORSHIP the cleaning and preparing for the house guests. Even those of us who work for the church have 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 our long lists of tasks of decorating, rehearsing, special programs, and special services. CHRISTMAS EVE On the Church Year Calendar, the four weeks 5:30 p.m. and traditional, Candlelight before Christmas are called Advent. Most of the Service at 7 p.m. world calls it the Christmas Season. Whatever you call it, it is a season of preparation. The Wise Men have become central figures in the Christmas story, and they are the subject of a lot of questions. Were there three of them? Where did they come from? Did they ride camels? Were they kings? Do we know their names? One thing we do know, their story tells us a lot about preparation for Christmas. They did a lot of preparing to reach one goal – worshiping the Christ Child. At 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, Sierra Presbyterian Church will present A Special Season of Worship, open and free to the public. It will feature the choirs, the Bells of the Sierra, a children’s chorus, various soloists and ensembles, instrumentalists, carol singing, and sketches on the Wise Men. It is our hope that this worship experience will help calm and quiet us in order to focus on the real significance of Christmas and the season of preparation. We will be celebrating the birth of our Savior on Christmas Eve at two Services, a Family oriented worship service at 5:30 p.m. and traditional, Candlelight Service at 7 p.m. We would love for you to join us for this special evening of Worship. Our regular Sunday Services are: 9 a.m. for Traditional and 10:30 a.m. for Contemporary. We will also begin having a monthly Second Sunday night Service at 5 p.m., beginning on Sunday, January 13. This gathering will offer an opportunity to participate in a worshiping community through contemporary music, an interactive discussion of that morning’s message, and creative ways to respond to God in prayer. We invite you to join us.
