WCSFA HISTORY
The Worcestershire Schools Football Association has been providing football for the students of the county since a group of teachers got together and formed the association in 1948. In addition to providing competitions for the schools and colleges within the county, representative sides have always been a major part of the organization at many age groups. Through representing Worcestershire, boys and more recently girls have been given opportunities to represent their country. The most famous Worcestershire schoolboy to play for England was Duncan Edwards who unfortunately, was killed as a result of the Munich air disaster in February 1958 whilst a member of that great Manchester United team known as the ‘Busby Babes’. More recently Robert Thompson-Brown a student at New College, Redditch played for England Under 18’s in 2010 and two years later in 2012 Rebecca Lloyd from Chantry High School, Martley played for the England Schools Under 15 Girls side after some fine displays whilst representing Worcestershire. In 1974 following re-organization of the County boundaries much of the north of Worcestershire was absorbed into the West Midlands and Worcestershire joined with Herefordshire to form Hereford & Worcester County School’s FA. This remained the situation until 1994 when once again the two counties went their separate ways and Worcestershire stood alone. The county continues to provide competitions for all schools and colleges both primary and secondary and also gives representative opportunities for the students in those establishments. However the association unlike many other County School’s FA’s is run by a very small band of volunteers and would be pleased to hear from anybody who would like to help them. The Aston Villa Old Stars team has played up to twenty-five fundraising matches every year throughout the UK, and in Ireland, the Channel Islands, Cyprus, Holland, France, Spain, Bulgaria and Germany. Since 1960, the names of the former players to have appeared in the Aston Villa Old Stars team reads like an Aston Villa Who’s Who? The following is just a small selection of the great names to have played in the team. Many of these former professional footballers have achieved the highest honours available in the game and in today’s multi-billion pound professional football environment; it is highly commendable to see so many great players giving their time and commitment, without payment, in support of a deserving cause. The Aston Villa Old Stars team and Aston Villa Former Players Association (founded 1995) have helped to raise millions of pounds for charitable and deserving causes and they are, without doubt, the leading former players’ team in the UK.
