SUE

January 2015

When I started writing for the vintage scene back in December 2013, I had the single track mind which was convinced that vintage stopped at clothes and housewares. This was probably the case for many years, but our industry has developed in such a way that we embrace everything. It isn't just wearing vintage, it's making it, living it and breathing it. That's why the magazine has warmly welcomed the craft, the art, the painting, recycling and upcycling of this world. It is all nostalgic and everyone has a place here. This week, we look at the online world of the market place and the ups and downs of those who sell there. I am delighted to see contributions from Annie Browne who is a successful writer and blogger in her own field. So sit back, be inspired and be warmed with this month's issue, With best wishes,

Making it out of nothing Crafting, stitching, rag rolling, varnishing, reworking - everyone is doing it, but is there really a business making something out of nothing? Michelle Hatcher goes to investigate our love of the sticky stuff

It's a joyous occasion don't you think? When you're presented with something created by your little offspring has spent all morning at preschool making you. You treasure it don't you? This little thing built with glue, glitter and a toilet roll. You are not sure what it's for, but it's yours to keep. And I will bet if you children are now old enough to be presented with their children's masterpieces, you still have theirs in the loft! It is no wonder that we warm to the idea of making things for a profitable cause. Etsy and the like are shining examples of this wonderous creative world which urges us to make haste to Hobbycraft and fill the basket. Yet how many of us actually succeed in making a living out of it, or is it forever destined to remain the second hobby of the stay at home mum?

to be made for sure, but you have to be good enough. 'That's the key' Says one crafter, 'You have to be patient too. But it must be remembered that you can't just sell on line. You have to be doing the local fairs too. Nothing beats face to face marketing in a town hall.' So, the balance is what's required. In a world where we are fast paced and high wired techno wizzes, is there still a place for the arty? Indeed yes!

We might all be strapped up to our iPads and iPods and tweeting every five minutes, but there is a call from the past which draws us curiously into a banner in the street marked 'craft fair here today.' There is something strong and deep in our systems which Folksy is crammed with dainty pieces of this and that urges us to support local trade and not just the while colleges and night schools all around the UK bakers in the village. We admire skill. It is inbuilt are filled to the classrooms with people bringing in within us to appreciate good quality produced out chairs to rework and upholster. There is a business of someone's front room in front of EastEnders

The Kirstie Allsop way You have to hand it to her, she is a money making machine and it is because of her passion, drive and status, that she has managed to launch craft into our homes on a frightening scale. Her long awaited Handmade Fair finally made it to Hampton Court last summer in 2014, and she is set to be back again this year in September. I urge you to go, take it all in, and watch as many of the demonstrations as possible. It is an eye opener to say the least

Last year, I was lucky enough to be offered tickets to attend the Handmade Fair by Kirstie Allsopp at Hampton Court. It was her first fair on this scale and its set to start a trend of annual pilgrimages in the same vein. It is high end craft, but don’t be fooled by this lovely, voluptuous creature zipping around the show in her golf caddy playing the darling hostess. This is a serious business here and behind the scenes, future crafty pitchers need to be prepared for hard graft. For starters, the fees for pitching up and kipping over the long weekend in a local hotel is going to set you back. This is the posh end where Surrey meets London and there isn’t a Premier Inn to be seen for miles (apart from the one in Chessington but that’s expect to fill up to book early.) For a welloiled plan of determination to work smoothly, set aside at least £1000 for travel and stoppage for the long weekend (three nights away.) But it’s not all give give, give, there is the private party on the Saturday night to look forward to, where you will

receive a firm hand shake (possibly from the lady herself) and a glass of Asti. It’s also a good chance to network a bit and have a good old gossip with the fellow tradies. Over all, it’s an experience, and an atmospheric one that I stress, attending pitchers should milk for all it’s worth ever more after. Plaster it all over your merchandise, website and marketing material for all eternity – that ‘I traded at Kirstie Allsopp’s HM Fair!’ sticker. If you are lucky to get ‘THE call’ from the KA team prior to the event asking if you would fill up a corner of a tent for them, then go for it. By the Tuesday after, you will be thoroughly exhausted, possibly broke, yet you will enjoy the fact that it’s an event where women and girls can get together, have a lot of laughs and fun without having to think of the men. It’s exhilaratingly worth it and at least, it will give you something to talk about on all your social media platforms for ever more.
