Uncover the ‘Teeny

Microplastics may be small, but their potential impact on our freshwater ecosystems is significant.

WAI Wānaka, alongside marine scientist Veronica Rotman, are in the midst of an exciting research project, looking at the prevalance of microplastics in Lake Wānaka. The project, titled ‘A Teeny-Tiny Truth’ combines scientific research with community action, providing a unique opportunity for volunteers to participate in the sampling process and community initiatives.

This all-ages event offers a unique opportunity to step into the shoes of a researcher and get a firsthand look at ‘A Teeny Tiny Truth’. Bring the whānau for a fun morning of:

• Scientific exploration: take a sample and test for microplastics in Lake Wānaka using the methods scientists do and check out your

findings under a microscope.

• Behind-the-scenes look: learn about the equipment used on our research boat and help us name our biggest piece of monitoring equipment - the mighty manta trawl!

• Lakefront rubbish pick-up: join in on our community rubbish pick-up to prevent more plastic pollution from finding its way into our waterways.

• Community Action: enjoy interactive displays and fun learning tools related to microplastics and our freshwater.

The HCA is an active community group focused on protecting the environment around the Hawea District and representing the community with local authorities and council. We are actively seeking more volunteers to join the HCA Executive Committee to ensure we have diversity in our representation and can continue to hear the opinions and voices in our district. Hawea is changing at lightning speed and without your voice and active participation, we could become removed from the decision-making processes that directly affect us and our living environments.

Building Better - The Pathway to Reduce Waste

Wao Summit is back in its 6th year running later this month, and once again will be dedicating a series of workshops and conversations focusing on how we can Build Better.

Wednesday, 25 October will have six sessions across the day that are ‘must attend’ events for anyone working in building and construction. The day begins with a Builders Brekkie and the launch of the ‘This is How We Build’ campaign aimed to get the building sector on the path to minimising materials and waste onsite. Enjoy coffee and breakfast and hear from local builders. Then join Kath Buttar from QLDC to discuss the mandatory changes to the

consenting process coming in efforts to reduce waste. You can then take in a tour of the Luggate Community Hall with local architect Anne Salmon and passive home design expert Jessica Eyers.

Are you a designer or architect? Then head to the afternoon workshop dedicated to materials, run by Raphaela Rose and Jimmi O’Toole from design studio ahha. Then end the day with the film ‘The Greenhouse’ by Joost, or attend one of the week’s most popular events Better Building - Systems Thinking in Building at Rippon Hall.
