With less than two months to go until Wanaka Relay For Life graces Pembroke Park on 27-28 March, organisation is in full swing and registrations are rolling in. "Momentum is building and we are hoping to get as many locals involved as possible in this special event weekend," says Jane Sharman, Event Coordinator. Relay For Life (RFL) is a team event where participants fundraise and walk or run relay-style for 24 hours to celebrate, remember and fight back against cancer. The event has a festival atmosphere with continuous entertainment and each team has a campsite around the track. All funds raised will support the vital work of the Cancer Society Otago & Southland Division in our region. You can get involved in RFL by entering a team (with friends, family, colleagues or club

members), volunteering to help during event weekend, or even by providing entertainment on stage or around the event. We look forward to seeing you there! MY COMMUNITY NEWS Game on in Hawea for Waitangi Day ‘Country’ are all the rest of the community, those who live in the Hawea School district, and they wear red. The programme starts on Friday evening – 5 February, with a Quiz Night at the Lake Hawea Community Centre, starting at 7.30pm. Traditionally Country have won the Quiz Night, so Town needs to mount a significant challenge this year.

The Hawea community celebrates Waitangi Day with a fun Challenge between Town and Country. ‘Town’ includes all those who live in, or are visiting, or are friends of the Lake Hawea township area (bounded by Muir Road, Cemetery Road, north Domain Road and the lake). The Town people wear blue.

Then on Saturday, 6 February - Waitangi Day, the day is filled with sports events. This starts with golf and goes on to include netball, tennis, pétanque, touch football and hopefully orienteering. The usual bowls and cricket are on hold this year as players are already committed to normal Saturday competitions. At 3.00pm, at the Hawea Flat School, there will be a series of fun races for the kids,

Robotic landing on Mars has long been viewed as one of the most challenging engineering endeavours in space exploration. In 2021, two very different landers will arrive at the red planet: the first Chinese attempted landing (Tianwen-1), is planned to occur mid-year, while the car-sized NASA Perseverance Rover attempts to land on 18 February. Learning from past attempts, each has a unique way to overcome the landing challenges. Our speaker will discuss his own experience in the history of robotic Mars landings, and the unique ways engineers have overcome some of the significant engineering challenges, with some particular observations from 2012’s fascinating Curiosity mission, the precursor to Perseverance. future of both international and commercial space missions to Mars, both robotic and crewed, and the implications for both space exploration and our day-to-day life on Earth. Dr Brian Pollard spent 19 years at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory working on, among other things, a wide diversity of Mars landings, beginning with the Mars Exploration Rovers in 2003 through to the successful Curiosity ‘Sky-crane’ landing in 2012. Although he left JPL in 2017, he continues to work with international agencies and commercial companies on the development of instruments for space, earth, and underwater exploration. A great way for Wanaka’s older people to meet, is to join up with PrimeTimers, a community group which gets together every month (on the 2nd Thursday) and travels around the regions of the Upper Clutha (4th Thursday) for a mystery trip and lunch.

It’s only $20 to join up for the year. Day trips are optional and cost only $5 per trip. We appreciate a gold coin donation for each afternoon tea.

On 26 January, Police were advised of two teenagers overdue from their trip up the Matukituki, but Police staff located them with their vehicle and SAR were not required. This is a good reminder for those heading out into our beautiful backyard to share their intentions and estimated return time with family or friends. A local driver was also suspended due to excess demerit points, and another domestic incident was dealt with in Albert Town. Graffiti was reported in the Spencer House Mall, outside the men’s toilet which happened between 22-25 January. If anyone knows who may be responsible, please come and see us, or give us a call. On the 28th, a male was located in the Dublin Bay area, after seeking help for a medical complaint. After he was checked out by Ambulance he returned to his Wanaka address. That same day, Police received a complaint from some trampers that their vehicle had been broken into while parked at Cameron Flat. This is the second such matter in the near vicinity around the same period of time. Make sure valuables are not left in vehicles parked overnight in remote areas. On 29 January, a local man was processed for drink driving, and due to the high reading, he heads over to Queenstown for a Court appearance. Police have been dealing with a number of complaints of theft of power tools from construction sites in the Hikuwai area. A reminder to builders to secure their valuables, or take them home each night. For anyone living nearby, please report anything suspicious in the area by calling 111. Over the weekend there was damage caused to several businesses in town, where shop front windows were smashed and garage doors damaged. This is entirely reckless and not what we expect to have happen to property, so please give us a call if you know anything about this. We will find out who is responsible. Schools are in full swing again, so look out for children biking to and from school, reduce vehicle speed limits around the school, and remember the speed limit when passing stationary school buses is 20km/hr.
