Going since 1994, this vibrant annual event is one of 20 international Worldloppet cross-country skiing racing events. Those brave enough to sign up can choose between four races and either discipline -- classic or skate. The Straggle Muster welcomes family groups of all ages and abilities including newcomers to the sport. For even more of a challenge, try the Snow Rake or Merino Muster. Once the land where the Lee family used to graze merino sheep, Snow Farm country consists of 55km of trails and takes in views of the bubbling Meg River. It is now run by a charitable trust and NZ’s home of crosscountry skiing. The race will take place on August 31st at Cardrona Valley Rd, Wanaka. There are different race options that

include the Under 10s (1km), Straggle Muster (7km), Snow Rake (21km) and the Merino Muster (42km) To refuel you can sip ‘n’ snack at feed stations spread around the course. To encourage youngsters to Ardmoreon Street complete the race, there will also be a lolly 19 station Ph 443 7868 the Straggle Muster (7km).

Lynne and Ralph came to Wanaka in 1996 after 30 years in Franz Josef Glacier where they owned a supermarket and souvenir shop. They set up bus company Wanaka ConneXions and Lynne set up the Alpine Community Development Trust (Community Networks) becoming its inaugural chairperson.

The Rotary Club of Wanaka recognised two outstanding contributors to the Wanaka community last night (Saturday 22 June) when it awarded Paul Harris Fellowship awards to Lynne and Ralph Fegan.

She was also chairperson of Women’s Probus & Travel Club, held treasury positions with RSA, U3A, Presbyterian Church and Concert Society and she found speakers for Grandview Probus and worked with the QLDC on the Wanaka Town Centre Strategy Committee.

At a dinner at Cardrona Hotel to celebrate the annual changeover to a new club president, outgoing president George Scott recalled the services of the

Other people are foremost in his mind and often his prioritising of the needs of others, is to his own personal detriment, not that you would ever hear that from him. “The members of the Rotary Club of Wanaka acknowledge the wonderful dedication, work ethic and enthusiasm that Ralph and Lynne have brought to the local Wanaka community,” said George Scott. A Paul Harris Fellowship Award is recognition for outstanding work and contribution both to Rotary and to the community. It was in 1905 that an American, Paul Harris, founded the Rotary Organisation. An award in his name, the Paul Harris Fellowship, is held in the highest regard throughout the Rotary world.

Factors that upset this rhythm are many and varied but, most important locally, are the introduced predators, including stoats, rats, hedgehogs and mice that ravage native bird populations. These pests are controlled with varying degrees of success by the Dept of Conservation, the local branch of Forest and Bird, the Aspiring Biodiversity Trust and various other voluntary organisations especially in the Wakatipu catchment. So, what is new that is upsetting the rhythm now? Successive, unusually hot summers have conspired

to exacerbate the threat posed by these predators. It is that beech trees in particular will produce an anticipated mega-mast harvest of seed this season. The bountiful food supply for predators increases their number to plague proportions. So far so good, but when the seed runs out, they turn their ravenous attention to the already under threat native bird population. For example, the Yellowhead/Mohua sometimes called the bush canary, found only in the South Island is struggling to maintain a viable population having already disappeared from much of its former habitat. Forest & Bird have invited their Conservation Adviser Kevin Hackwell to address this very issue. Kevin will be speaking at a public meeting on Wednesday 17 July at 7.00pm at the St John ambulance base, Link Street Wanaka. All are welcome, a gold coin donation would be appreciated

A new weekly ‘Game Day’ is all about having fun playing board games with friends and family, as well as a chance to meet and challenge someone new.

“The library is a community space where people can connect, learn and socialise. Game Day incorporates all of these things and we’re confident it will be a hit with both locals and visitors,” says Eve.

Games provided by the library include favourites like Scrabble, Chess, Backgammon, Connect 4 and Jenga. People can bring their own games along as long as they’re happy to share. Assistant Librarian Eve Marshall-Lea says the sessions are aimed at people of almost any age who enjoy playing games or are keen to learn. “The idea is to create a fun, relaxing way to enjoy the library space and connect with others,” she says. “We’ve had requests from library visitors in the past for us to lend out games particularly on cold days. So with winter now here we

Participation is free and everyone welcome with no pre-booking required. As with all visits to the library, children aged 14 and under need to have a caregiver with them. Another week, another set of stories. Some serious, others hilarious. All in a weeks work for your local men and women in Police. A late night call out had one visiting individual receive attention from Police in Wanaka, Cromwell and Queenstown for a mental health episode. It escalated quite quickly and could have ended very differently compared to how it was resulted. This was good both for the individual and the Police that attended. I’m sure you all may have read about the search warrant that was executed in Lake Hawea. Good bit of work here done by the Detectives who were able to seize $17,000 worth of MDMA and ten mature Cannabis plants getting them off the street and ultimately reducing the harm caused by drugs in our community. Two crashes and a burglary were attended on Wednesday. The crashes were a mix of road and weather conditions as well as a driver being tired. Unluckily for them though, that was the least of their worries as the officer’s spotted a bit of drug equipment that has landed one driver in court. One of these crashes involved a cyclist who was not wearing any reflectorized clothing or had their light on. With the darkening evenings, make yourself more visible by using a light and something that is hi-vis. Friday night saw a drink driver taken off the streets. A high level of alcohol was in this person’s system and they were a real danger to responsible citizens that were using the road. It’s good to see less drink driving, but sadly some people still aren’t getting the message – don’t drink and drive. Another alcohol related driving incident had one driver nearly put his car over the Lake Hawea dam. This thoughtless person scarpered before Police could get there and enquiries are ongoing as to who was driving. On Saturday two members of the public nearly descended into a scene from Fight Club. Words were exchanged over an issue, but thankfully, nothing eventuated. Both people were spoken to and reminded about keeping their words in check. The evening saw Police time wasted with drunken people in town who cannot behave themselves. One male was denied entry due to his level of drunkenness, so he tried swinging punches at staff. He was no Anthony Joshua, so hit nothing but air and got himself a pre charge warning for his actions. Another incident at the same location saw the event shut down. One woman decided to bare all and relieve herself on the footpath. Nothing but trashy really, especially with multitudes of people including children walking over the very spot the following day. She was sorry for her actions, but earnt herself a pre charge warning also. A death was attended by Police on Sunday. Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends as they go through this extremely hard time.
