THIS YEAR WE CELEBRATE OUR 60TH YEAR! Hawea Wanaka Pony Club is about to begin another busy fun season. Members of all ages and abilities are catered for and are always welcoming new members either with or without a pony.

The opening rally of the season will be at 11am Sunday 7th August at the Pony Club Grounds on Domain Road in Hawea. This is a good opportunity to come along and see what happens at our Pony Club if you are considering joining and want more information. You don't have to have a pony, just being passionate and keen to learn more equine skills is also encouraged.

This season we will see our riders aim for and achieve their new season goals. The Hawea Wanaka Pony Club coaches will be facilitating this by encouraging all the riders to keep

working towards their own level of NZPCA Certificates, Achievement Badges and /or Equine Skills covering all aspects of riding, horsemanship, horse management and a variety of non riding activity options. While also preparing those wanting to compete for a variety of competition genres, including showing, games, dressage, show jumping and eventing.

To achieve this we are always needing more coaches. If you are interested in helping and being involved at our Pony Club please don’t hesitate to contact us.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Luggate Bridge clean up Aimee Wilson

It’s not only Wastebusters where people can get a cheap television, microwave and household furniture.

Underneath the Luggate Bridge there appears to be a raft of unwanted stuff as well - although perhaps not in the same condition.

The Luggate Community Association plans to clean up the mess under and around the historic red bridge in early August, as the place has been turned into a tip.

Dumped carcasses have also been dumped onsite, along with household rubbish.

Fly tipping, where people dump rubbish and unwanted possessions in remote places, is an intermittent problem throughout the Queenstown Lakes District.

Regulatory manager Lee Webster said anyone found to have been dumping such waste on council land, including the red bridge site, was OLDEOH IRU D ¿QH Meanwhile, association member Graham Taylor said a 10-year-plan

has been established for the northeast side of the bridge, including landscaping and a new freedom camp area.

“It’s about turning the area into something better - it’s quite an eyesore and unacceptable.”

An historic assessment has been done of the site, and both sides of the bridge reserve area will be tidied up, with pine trees removed and exotic native trees established to enhance what is already there.

He said Transit New Zealand has recognised that it’s a great rest area for travellers, and will install a toilet - with future plans to turn it into a proper registered camp site.

“It’s a bit of a disaster to have it free for all, but if there is some control over it, it will be better for everyone.”

There is always a cost to alcohol, be it to our wallets, our time, our health or our relationships. Everyone needs to examine the consequences of their drinking. Is it worth it?” public health researcher and Hawea Flat mother Dr Vanessa Hammond said.

drinking habits.

“Harming Me, Harming You;” a Community Perspective on Alcohol use in Wanaka involved surveying more than 300 Year 9 - 11 students from Mount Aspiring College.

Of those, 104 were randomly selected and interviewed.

Twenty eight percent of those (13 to 15-year-olds) admitted actively engaging in alcohol use and seven percent drank alcohol excessively to get drunk.

The community hui will be held at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Wednesday August 17.

Top Wanaka skiers and snowboarders will be heading to Remarkables at the end of the month for the North Face Freeski Frontier.

Formerly known as the Freeski Open of NZ, for over a decade the world’s top skiers, have used this event as a stepping stone to the Freeride World Tour.

Until 2015 The NZ Open was a freeski-only event. In 2015 snowboarders were also invited to compete and the overwhelmingly positive response made it an easy decision to keep the snowboard competition in the new format.

Last year Wanaka’s Sam Lee was second in the freeski event behind Frenchman Sebastien Varlet, and Hank Bilous was third.

Maria Kuzma was top female snowboarder.

“NZ 2015 was effectively my comeback season post ACL reconstruction,” explains Sam. “I took a full speed approach, but kept everything within my limits and was able to come away with second

place… I consider that run to be one of my best ever comp runs. It set me XS ZLWK DQ H[FHOOHQW FRQ¿GHQFH ERRVWHU for my European season, and the result turned out to be one of my top three results that determined my ranking and ultimately would qualify me for the Freeride World Tour in 2017.”

Snow Sports NZ director of coach and sport development, Adam Dooney said while the event doesn’t include slopestyle or halfpipe events, snowboard and freeski park and pipe competitors will have the chance to earn valuable FIS points at ANC Continental Cups, hosted by Cardrona Alpine Resort from September 5 to 9.

“We were stoked to see really experienced snowboarders like Maria Kuzma signing up for last year’s event as well as exciting young talent like Finn Duffy, who then went on to place third at the Freeride Junior World Champs in Grandvalira-Andorra,” he said.

The North Face Freeski Frontier will be held between August 22 and 27.

Well we have had an interesting mix of work this week so here is a snippet of some of the calls for service over the week.

We attended a complaint where neighbours have had issues with property boundaries. It seems some people just can’t get on well with others.

We have had two jobs this week of stock being on the roads. One was on Cardrona Valley Road and the other on the Albert TownLake Hawea Road. Stock on the road is a dangerous situation and if seen on the roadside do not hesitate to call us.

A theft was reported in Tyndall Street overnight where items of value were stolen from a vehicle. Please take any valuable items from your vehicle and ensure it is locked. If you see suspicious behaviour near vehicles please call us. A vehicle was reported unlawfully taken this week and then located fully locked the next street over. It is possible that the driver forgot where it had actually been parked.

We took two drivers licenses from people this week as a result of their excess demerit points. If you have had a couple of tickets remember if you exceed 100 demerits in 2 years we will suspend your driver’s licence for 3 months. We will continue to focus on restricted drivers having issued 15 tickets the past month.

A report was taken that a New Zealand Fire Service power box near the water tanks on Lismore Street has been damaged by rocks. Do you know anything about this? If so give us a call.

We caught a drink driver who was well over the limit this week in the middle of the day. Why is this still happening Wanaka? Where are the good friends stopping their mates from driving drunk day or night?

Our advice, at this stage, is to hold off upgrading to Windows 10, particularly if you are running Windows 7.

We have seen a number of customers who have upgraded, experienced issues, then want to roll back. This is possible but is not always 100% clean.

Don’t worry, the “free� upgrade is available until next August, so we recommend waiting until Windows 10 has been out for a few more months and most of the bugs are sorted.
