Organisers of the Wanaka A&P Show are gearing up to host more than 40,000 people this weekend for the annual event, which has been the highlight of the Upper Clutha calendar for more than 80 years. But as the crowds from around Otago – and New Zealand – arrive in Wanaka, it begs the question: what makes a local? Wanaka Show event manager Jane Stalker says they have addressed the issue in a tongue-in-cheek way via the Show’s Call Me Local marketing campaign. “The show has been a local institution since 1933 and over the years we’ve seen our region evolve into the wonderful community it is today,” she says. “This year, we wanted to celebrate being a local – whatever that means to you.”

At a time of rapid growth and development, Jane says maintaining a sense of community is now more

important than ever. The Wanaka A&P Show has long held traditional community values and the aim of the campaign is to remind people about the importance of these. “We believe it’s about what you do here and your role in the community, rather than how long you have lived here,” she says. The Wanaka A&P Show runs from this Friday 8 March to Saturday 9 March from 8.00am until 5.00pm at the Wanaka Showgrounds on Ardmore Street. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online at www.wanakashow. co.nz for $17.50 per day per adult and $5 per day per youth. Kids aged 12 and under are free. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Stitching paradise at embroidery school Written by: Gaynor Chronican, Chairman Otago Embroiderers Guild, Wanaka School Committee The Wanaka Embroidery School is organised by the Otago Embroiderers’ Guild and is held at Mt. Aspiring College over the third weekend in March each year. This year will be 35th school, attracting attendees from NZ and Australia with many returning year after year. As this is a significant anniversary, the Wanaka school has invited a special tutor, Nikki Delport -Wepener, who is based in Hong Kong. Nikki was trained at the Royal School of Needlework and has published numerous embroidery books. There are still vacancies for some classes including Nikki’s Wanaka class and another class taking place in Dunedin the following weekend. We will accept late registrations until 6th March. Traders are also in attendance. Shirley Wright from Dunedin has been coming for 33 years bringing a wonderful selection of books and craft supplies from her business ‘Elna-Sewing and Jan’s Patch’. These shops will be situated in Rooms 9 & 9¾ and will be open on Saturday from 9.30am – 3.30pm and Sunday from 9.00am – 2.30pm. A display of work in Room 7/8 will also be open to the public, hours as for Traders. Class participants and tutors display their work for everyone to see. There is no charge for visitors to the traders or the display of work during the weekend. The Wanaka community are welcome to come to Mt Aspiring College to support our Traders and view the display of over 100 beautiful,

Sport Central is grateful for the assistance of some quality presenters who are giving freely of their time and experience. On 14 March at WRC from 7.00 – 8.30pm, nationally ranked Touch ref, Kirsten Wyatt and international football ref Lindsey Robinson are presenting a course for beginner officials. All the courses are generic so not sport specific. Topics covered will be positioning, managing yourself, managing the players, managing the side-line and developing a good rapport.

Shane Carvell is presenting a warm up and cool down session endorsed by the ACC on 21 March at Wanaka Primary School, from 7.00 – 8.30pm. Shane will also cover topics such as nutrition, hydration, concussion protocol and athlete loading. Hospice calls for Biographers for Central Otago Service Written by: Rebecca Shaw Otago Community Hospice is recruiting volunteers for its rebooted Biography Service in the Central Otago Region. Hospice CEO Ginny Green says the service has been offered in the past, but has been dormant for two years as it was restructured. “We are seeing patient numbers grow in Central and we want to ensure these patients are getting the same service offering as patients closer to the Dunedin. The Biography Service offers an

opportunity for patients to record their life stories – a way of sharing their history and pass this on to family members. We have had the new service running in Dunedin since November 2018 with 12 Biography volunteers. It’s a service that is really well received by our patient community.” The training will start with an ‘Information and Recruitment’ day on Saturday 16 March in Cromwell. Volunteers will then be able to apply to become part of the Biography Service and attend the two training days (30 and 31 March 10.00am-3.30pm).

The biographers meet patients on four occasions, guiding them through their reflections and recording their words, which are then rendered in written form by the transcribers. The patient is closely involved in the process throughout and has the final say on what is included. Wanaka A&P Show weekend is fast approaching so the town will be very busy later in the week. It will pay to do your grocery shopping before Friday and avoid the centre of town during the Show if you can. There will be changes to the roading setup so make allowances for a few delays. The free ‘Park n Ride’ shuttle service will again be happening from either Enterprise St off Ballantyne Road or opposite the Wanaka Medical Centre on Cardrona Valley Road. Another busy week in Wanaka for Police where we have been dealing with mostly road policing incidentsLast Wednesday (27th) a local man was processed for drink-driving, a female motorcyclist was travelling over the Crown Range and ‘dropped’ her motorcycle on her as she came off resulting in minor injuries. Also that day a rental trailer detached from the vehicle towing it and the trailer collided with a fence. On Thursday, a tourist lost control of her vehicle on the WanakaLuggate highway and drove through a fence, resulting in her being charged with careless driving. Police/SAR also dealt with a group of kayakers on the Clutha River towards Queensbury where one of the group was ‘lost’. He was found at a Wanaka address three hours later, but failed to advise his mates. A vehicle was reported stolen from near the Albert Town Bridge, but was found to have been towed by roading contractors. On Friday 1st March, Police received notice of a group of three overdue trampers in the Rabbit Pass area. With fine weather and taking longer than expected, they all walked out a day late in good spirits. Also on Friday an overseas driver lost control in gravel on the Lake Hawea-Albert Town Road and crashed, causing injury to two passengers, resulting in a court summons on drink-driving and careless driving causing injury charges. Police also dealt with a domestic matter on Friday. An overdue male on a jet-propelled surfboard involved Police and Coastguard on Saturday, the male making land prior to coastguard putting their boat in the water. Police also attended a vehicle crash on Cardrona Valley Road where the vehicle left the road at speed and ended up down a bank. Three occupants were taken to Queenstown Hospital and the driver was charged with careless driving causing injury. Finally on Sunday, rental car occupants looking for the Lavender Farm on SH 6 caused a crash when they turned in front of an oncoming vehicle, the driver of the rental has been summonsed for careless driving. Early on Sunday morning a driver was processed for drink-driving after leaving a local bar and a local man was dealt with for driving offences and has been forbidden from driving until he gets a valid licence.
