COASTGUARD FUNDRAISER FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Coastguard Wanaka is raising funds for a new boat and building, to help save lives on Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea. The fundraising event will be held at b.social on Saturday 17 October. Jonathan Walmsley, the Chairman of the Wanaka Coastguard is looking forward to the event and enjoying the venue “We are extremely grateful to James and Matt at b.social who have very kindly agreed to host us for the day.” In the afternoon we will be looking to put on activities for families, so bring the kids and enjoy some activities for the whole family. The afternoon activities will be followed by a Quiz at 7.00pm. The one and only, George

Smyth will be the Quiz Master. We are looking for teams of 6, with a $10.00 entry fee per person. Since there is limited space available inside of the venue, we recommend preregistering your team by emailing: willum.richards@wrconsulting.co.nz

MY COMMUNITY NEWS The leading voice for women in the construction industry We are delighted to have the Queenstown Lakes area join our National NAWIC organisation. This is a fantastic initiative from Nell Pooley and the committee to get local women in construction together, to meet and share experiences and skills.

The NAWIC Queenstown Lakes Launch will be held on 15 October 2020 at the Mountain Club, level 3, Craigs Investment Building, Five Mile, 36 Grant Road, Frankton. For our Wanaka community it will be a worthwhile little road trip over the Crown Range.

NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) is a voluntary, non-profit association of women, who work either in the construction industry, or for business organisations who provide services to the construction industry.

We can all agree this year has been a unique working environment, hearing about exceptional women in our industry is a positive way to celebrate a difficult time. Including events such as Daffodil Day, Relay for Life and local balls, all of which raise much needed funds for the Otago communities. Cancer Society isn’t funded by the government, so these fundraising events facilitated by our wonderful volunteers are vital. Other areas include Health Promotion, which focuses on public health, Cancer Prevention, Support Care, and Volunteering Divisions. Volunteering also benefits the volunteer themselves “I really enjoy volunteering for the Cancer Society. Going through my own journey I valued the distraction, assistance and support of others. The bright variable weather conditions have continued throughout the week, from snow, then back to warmer BBQ weather. The conditions have not been good for all and we think about the destruction caused to Ohau village, thank God no lives have been lost, but many families have lost homes and have to rebuild their lives. Some of our local fire crews headed north to assist. For the local sports fans, it has been sad news as the log of wood proved too hot a potato to hold and has headed north to Hawkes Bay. Congratulations to our Cantabrian neighbours on NZ’s first golden point win. Monday morning Police received a complaint of wilful damage, with a vehicle doing doughnuts in the snow on the Hikuwai subdivision damaging the grass that had been laid. Tuesday saw a local male arrested on a warrant for failing to appear at court, and Police dealt with a report of unsecured firearms at an address. A male was dealt with for possession of cannabis after his vehicle was stopped and searched. Wednesday saw police deal with the unlawful taking of a vehicle from an address in Queensberry. Thursday saw police deal with a family harm matter, the male from this incident was also apprehended for excess breath alcohol. Friday saw Police deal with a motor vehicle crash on Cardrona Valley Road, a male was dealt with for careless driving and subsequently needed the services of emergency psychiatric services. Saturday saw police receive a report of a burglary of a Beacon Point Road address, in which a dinghy was stolen. We also received a report of a petrol drive off from a local petrol station. Thankfully we have camera footage of the vehicle and suspect, probably not a wise thing to do. Police dealt with another family harm matter in which a male was arrested and has been charged with serious assault charges in relation to his wife.
