For the past 3 years Wanaka and Districts Lions Club have been leading 4WD Safaris to some of the most iconic high country stations in our region. In 2017 they took 50 trucks to West Wanaka Station, and a similar number to Bendigo Station last year. This year the Safari trip, planned for 11 January, is sticking close to town, but the views will be the best yet. Heading to Hillend Station, up the northern flanks of Mt Alpha, you are guaranteed jaw dropping, panoramic views of Lake Wanaka and town and the Cardrona Valley. Join us to see this working high country station in action, which runs sheep, deer and Angus beef.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS )-m-h- uঞv-m -uh;| |ub-Ѵbm] - m; Ѵo1-ঞom =ou b|v $_ uv7- l-uh;|ĺ Heading into their 13th year of operating, the first 10 as the Wanaka Farmers Market and the most recent 3 as the Wanaka Artisan Market after the inclusion of locally made arts and craft stalls; this not-for-profit community market is trialing an exciting change. Next Thursday, 16th January, the Market will be held on the lakefront reserve adjacent to the Dinosaur Park, just across the road from its current Bullock Creek location beside the Speights Ale House. After over a year of confusion about the future of the current site due to uncertainty about the outcome of the Wanaka Town Centre Masterplan and increased difficulty with customer access and parking, it was time for the market committee to look at new ideas for the continuation of this popular weekly event. A year of unseasonably warm winter weather (meaning less snow and less visitors), unseasonably cold and wet summer weather, including the 2019 floods, and the start of an Alexandra based market in Three Parks, have also had an effect on the Market and all our local stall holders have noticed the decline in business.

The Market Committee have been working with Council staff to find a new location and the area of lake front reserve adjacent to the Dinosaur playground could be a perfect solution. Plenty of space for stall holders to set up with shady trees for those hot days, more parking spaces, abundant seating, the proximity of the bus parks and public toilets and the opportunity for food trailers to be located on the edge of the market. Combine that with the proximity to our beautiful lake and you have a spot that would be very hard to beat. The Market Committee are very excited to try this new location and hope that the Wanaka public will turn out in force to test the site out for themselves. Come and grab yourself some award winning bread, handmade soap and beauty products, Wanaka artwork, Central Otago fruit, locally made elderflower cordial, Hawea produce and pickles, handcrafted pottery and so much more. The market will also be trying out a new start time of one hour earlier at 2pm and run through to 6pm.

On 30 December two young guys walking home along Beacon Point Road were accosted by three males and a bag stolen from them. Anyone knowing the three males involved are asked to contact me at the Wanaka Police Station on 443 7272.

On the subject of damage, local Police and Council were astounded at the number of street signs that were damaged or uprooted around the town over the Christmas/New Year period. Obviously not the work of our local population. On New Year's Day a custom built titanium mountain bike along with a blue cycle helmet were stolen from outside Kai Whaka Pai. If you know its whereabouts then contact Police and we will let the owner reclaim it. Over the last couple of weeks a steady flow of drink-drivers have been processed by Police and most are off to Court to hand over their driver licences to the Judge. A number of disorder incidents were reported at a couple of the local camp grounds. Those involved were kicked out by management so that the families and other more responsible users could get some sleep. Next year we will insist that camp ground managers deny entry to any groups that have no adult supervision. A number of tents and property were reported stolen from the Albert Town Camp Ground over New Year. Anyone with information as to who was responsible are asked to contact Wanaka Police. On 2 January at 11.50pm two people got into difficulties in the Clutha River near Wicklow Tce in Albert Town. Thanks to the Harbour Master and Go Jets for helping Police get them to shore alive. A reminder that the Clutha River is running high and it is easy to get into difficulties. On 3 January, the local ‘breadman’ was doing his deliveries in the early hours and some plonker stole his crate barrow while he was away from his truck. Anyone knowing where the barrow is are asked to let local Police know so we can get it back to him. A reminder that Police will continue to focus on disorder, speed, drink driving and the wearing of seatbelts while driving. For those that want to party, be considerate of your neighbours, and could dog owners clean up their do-doos and keep control of your pets on the lakefront areas. Have a safe week.
