Save the date! Saturday, 9 January 2021. With successful trips through West Wanaka, Bendigo and Hillend Stations under our belt, this year we will venture a little further afield, to explore Forest Range Station located in the Lindis Pass High Country. This one is a not-to-be missed experience.

We will travel in convoy through stunning Lindis tussock landscapes, climbing to the summit of Mt Grandview. This peak is well named, as we will have unique views of both Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka from the top. We will descend steeply through Mt Grand Station, taking in picturesque views of the Hawea flat. Once at the bottom, we will travel along the Hawea Back Road and meet for a lakeside BBQ on the greenway at Gladstone, on the shores of Lake Hawea at about 4.00pm. We thank Russell & David Emmerson of Forest Range & Ric McNeilly of Mt Grand Stations for allowing access to these iconic properties.
This trip is intended to be an enjoyable family day out and is perfect for those who have a 4WD, but have never really taken it off road. Search and Rescue and Shotover 4WD Club vehicles will be placed among the convoy for added safety. We will assemble at the Forest Range homestead at 9.30am. Allow about 1 hour driving time from Wanaka. Registration is essential and numbers are strictly limited. If you don’t have a 4WD vehicle, register anyway. There are always spare seats and we will find one for you! Adults $60, children under 15yrs $25, children under 5yrs free. A donation from the proceeds will be made to Wanaka Search and Rescue (SAR). Wanaka and Districts Lions are proud to support this essential community organisation.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Allenby Park Community Christmas Party The annual Allenby Park Community Christmas Party will be held at the playground area of Allenby Park on Sunday 13 December between 4.00pm and 7.00pm. The wider Mt Iron community is invited to bring a picnic, chairs, blankets and shade, games to share, and enjoy an opportunity to socialise with your neighbours. You are invited to bring along a decoration for the community Christmas tree. The ‘Friends of Allenby Park’ Facebook page will notify if there is a cancellation for this event. Although traditionally we have shared

food, this year we’ll keep it COVID-19 friendly and bring our own picnics. The ‘Friends of Allenby Park’ have worked together over the years to create a fun and enjoyable space for all of our community. Most recent improvements have been the addition of a wonderful playground that appeals to kids of all ages, our irrigation system (managed by the community) and community fruit trees. We hope to see you all on Sunday, to celebrate the end of 2020, continue our annual tradition and celebrate our longstanding community spirit.
Wrapping for Good again this Christmas

An army of generous volunteers all embracing the Christmas spirit will take to Helwick Street again this year. Wrapping your presents with sustainable wrapping materials, for a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to local charity ‘Food for Love’.
From the recycled wrapping paper, swing tags and natural twine, everything is environmentally friendly, home compostable and re-usable. A gold coin donation is suggested per gift wrapped, with all proceeds being donated to ‘Food for Love.’
The Wrapped for Good station offers Christmas chat and laughter, and will be set up outside Soul Clothing from 9.00am 5.00pm everyday from December 19 - 24.
Donations are accepted by cash or online banking. Everyone and gifts from anywhere are welcome. This year we would love for the retailers to jump on board and send people down for their sustainable wrapping option.
Founders Sally Gordon, Arna Craig and Jess Eastwood all agreed that “after the huge success and community connection of ‘Wrapped for Good’ last year, there was no doubt in our minds about doing it again this year.
Christmas is all about giving, so to be able to raise money for charity, using completely sustainable products, support local retailers and provide a fun and friendly environment for locals, and an enjoyable environment for our volunteers, really makes the heart sing.”
Movement, mud and mates for mental health
2020 has seen many in our community hugely impacted by mental health and wellness and has been at the forefront of conversation. New local event, the Alpha Challenge is raising money for Community Networks Mental Health and highlighting the
struggle that many go through. They believe that there is an added factor to movement for mental health and that is connection. Held at Dublin Bay on 12 December, the Alpha Challenge is a fun event that anyone can do and the organisers encourage people to help each other throughout. Enjoy the festival atmosphere with food, drinks and music all provided by Wanaka locals. Alpha Challenge Race Director, Andrew King says “We believe so passionately in this event. We have taken teams to obstacle course races (OCR) and they include elite athletes through to first time beginners. The focus is on personal success and working together in a positive way. It

Not only are the benefits of moving proven to help, but when you are down or struggling with a challenge on course, the only way is up and this can require assistance from a teammate, resilience, and even the courage to say ‘no I can’t do this and move on.’ The daily struggles that a person with depression or anxiety, may face, is so much harder than the Alpha Challenge and we want people to walk away having had a great time, but also having some insight into what it feels like for someone struggling with mental health who is overcoming obstacles on an everyday basis.”

Hello everyone, happy summertime to you all. Classic summer weather we’ve had this week. A bit of a mixed bag for us at Ballantyne Road this week, but a good spread across everything. If it were a bag of party mix lollies, there would be representation of all types, and not the disproportionate amount of bananas that we have all no doubt had to endure at some point in our lives. On Monday there was a report of theft. Please be careful who has access to your funds, even if they are family members. A report was also taken that involved a sheep with bullet wounds in Hawea Flat. If you are shooting rabbits, be mindful of where the round is going. As a shooter, you are accountable for each and every round, so a stray mishap isn’t really an excuse. These rounds often end up hitting houses. That same person has also noticed a significant number of lambs have disappeared from their paddock. A youth was dealt with for breaching their licence conditions and now have to come to terms with losing it for excess demerits. We are aware that restricted drivers are breaching their conditions and are doing some work on pulling them in line. Hopefully the message starts to get through when the bank accounts get hit and the demerits start adding up. Caught three times and there is your licence gone for 3 months. On Wednesday a family harm incident occurred. Both parties now have to explain their actions to a Judge. If you find yourself in a heated argument, just walk away for a bit. It can stop things escalating to the point where we get involved. Some torrential rains in the Haast Pass on Friday caused a tree to come down and block some of the road on a blind bend. The evening saw two drink drivers dealt with, and both lost their licence for 28 days. A motorbike rider had their bike impounded due to alcohol reasons. They also have to see a judge to explain. Police attended a death and our thoughts are with the family and friends. Saturday’s double dose of the Beerfest and Crate Day caused a bit of issues for us. Several people were removed from the festival due to their booziness, but on a whole, most were really good and functioning like proper adults. Only one drink driver was found. Several people were rescued from bushes and the footpath. A person was arrested after they failed to appear in court and spent a few days in the cells in Queenstown. No lake views in there, so please don’t forget court dates. An individual went on a rampage late at night causing damage to several properties and scaring lots of people. We strongly think drugs and alcohol were involved and this person has a date with a judge after being arrested. Sunday was a driving complaint day. It is always great to refute a driver’s claims with photographic evidence of their behaviour, so try take a picture if you’re able. Police also assisted our friends over in Cromwell with a drunk driver and crash on Sunday night. To cap the week off, there were some people spoken to about a late night spa session in the Albert Town Community Centre. If the gates are locked and you have to jump the fence, it probably means they don’t want people using it at that time.
