The Wanaka Branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand is organising a public meeting on Friday 24th February in the Lake Wanaka Centre.

It aims to provide an opportunity for the public to get an understanding of the state of our lakes (Wakatipu, Wanaka, Hawea) and to learn who is responsible for their welfare and management. Two highly regarded freshwater scientists, Professor David Hamilton and Dr Marc Schallenberg, will present an overview of the present state of the lakes and the problems that currently exist, or that may threaten future viability. They will then join a panel of representatives from all the organisations which have statutory

responsibilities towards the lakes. These include QLDC, ORC, DoC, LINZ, MfE, MPI, Guardians, and Fish & Game. Each representative will briefly outline their organisation’s obligations and what measures they are presently, or will in the future be taking to protect our lakes.

The panel will then respond to questions from the public. The Lake Wanaka Trust, an umbrella group created to coordinate research and other activities will be represented and seeking members to support its endeavours.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Annual Waitangi Day challenge in Hawea Aimee Wilson

If you live in Hawea, Hawea Flat or surrounding areas and you enjoy sport, then this year’s Waitangi Day challenge is for you. There is touch football, bowls, tennis, petanque, senior and junior cricket and netball, golf, a quiz night and the big Top Town Challenge. The event has moved this year from the Peter Fraser Park to the Hawea Flat primary school, with sports to suit all ages and abilities. This year organisers have also included a ‘kidz corner’ with games for the young ones and a lolly scramble. The event is in its 12th year and involves teams from Hawea town vs teams from surrounding Hawea areas (country). So far the challenge is at six wins to town and five wins to country, so a fairly even competition. The quiz night on Sunday is for teams of four at the Lake Hawea Community Centre, and proceeds from this go to the Hawea School playground maintenance.

Organiser Colleen Carr said she hoped to see some support from the parents of children at the school. As quite often the case with events, people usually turn up on the day to enter, but Colleen said this makes it very hard to organise when you have no idea of numbers. “There are a lot of community members helping with the day so we hope that as many Hawea residents as possible will come and join in the fun and celebrate our National Day together as a community.” Organisers are also hoping to have the traditional ‘aerial’ lolly scramble where a plane does a flyover and drops them onto the paddock - but this is still to be confirmed. Firstly they went on an adventure bike ride, and then they investigated a big drainage pipe through thick broom, and finally waded around a big pond. A few days later they took a broken windsurfing board to Dublin Bay and swim/ paddled it around the shoreline. Then a few days after that that they went to the Cardrona reserve and played in the river and made a tribal camp, whilst acting out characters. “Adventure can be anywhere; to me it’s a state of mind rather than a destination,” he said. Emma Dixon is living her dream and she loves helping others fulfil theirs. This week sees most schools heading back to start term one. Please be cautious around our schools and surrounding streets both before and after the bell rings. Parents also need to be patient whilst dropping their children off at the school gate, respecting the no parking areas. Here is snippet of events that police dealt with this week: Two overseas visitors were lucky to escape a vehicle crash uninjured after their car rolled at the intersection of Shortcut Road and Church Street, Luggate. This was mostly due to them both wearing their seatbelts. Driving complaints are a daily, sometimes hourly occurrence for us at this time of year. One of these complaints involved a rental car being completely on the wrong side of the road at times. This resulted in the rental company cancelling their contract and them KDYLQJ WR ÂżQG DQRWKHU PHDQV RI WUDQVSRUW In another driving complaint, a driving lesson was in progress along the Crown Range Road, perhaps not the best road to be teaching someone how to drive. Several minor domestic incidents were attended by police which were resolved easily. A male was apprehended for shop lifting at New World. A group of locals had to be moved on from an address in Albert Town after they showed little or no respect to the owner of the holiday home, who was a relative.
