Are you interested in being an Alzheimer’s Otago Volunteer Companion? Making a difference Volunteers perform an important function by offering regular companionship to people with mild dementia. By so doing, volunteers make a difference to peoples’ lives by helping to maintain social contacts, activities and interests thereby alleviating and moderating anxiety and distress to a helpful degree. Volunteer support aims to help people feel less disconnected from their past lives, decrease social isolation and feel part of an enjoyable relationship. The Volunteer Role: • Visiting a person/s with mild dementia on a regular basis • Building a trusting relationship • Engaging in agreed activities with the person/s • Attending volunteer support groups and training

Personal characteristics: • Willing to learn about dementia and its impact on individuals and families • Possess empathy, listening and communication skills • Recognise the importance of confidentially and be rigorous in its practice • Prepared to follow Alzheimers Society Otago policy • Willing to attend volunteer support meetings and participate in all training

INSPECTIONS

As we progress into summer, local police are targeting speed on rural roads, seatbelts, and cyclists riding without helmets. It has been a study week for the MAC students and exams are starting, so keep speeds down outside schools and when you see the school bus stationary with hazard lights flashing. This week has seen a few things going on for Police. Here is just a few of the incidents that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been dealing with: The week started with a local driver suspended for excessive demerit points. On the 5th November, Wanaka Search and Rescue members and Police were involved in the rescue of two paraglider pilots on Mt Roy, one was taken to Dunstan Hospital with a head injury. At about the same time of day, Police attended a single vehicle crash at the corner of Ballantyne Road and Golf Course Road after a van failed to take the corner when heading north and rolled before sliding on its side down Ballantyne Road. Fortunately, the sole occupant only suffered a cut elbow. A busy intersection with pedestrians using both the golf course crossing and the footpath, this could have resulted in serious injury. The driver appeared in Court on Monday of this week. A theft of mail was reported this week. The contents of the letter was a credit-type card that was used in Christchurch in October, so enquiries are under way to locate the thief. On the 8th November, a local woman reported some disturbing contents on a social media site and has taken precautions so it would not happen to her again. A reminder of the dangers of disclosing too much private information on social media sites to strangers. The Wanaka Hawea Reserves Trust is a Charitable Trust that has been established by locals to advocate for the protection and enhancement of reserves throughout the Upper Clutha basin. Trust members believe our Reserves are an important part of what makes our area special. We are concerned that decisions made affecting our Reserves are based more on expediency than on any long term vision. The Wanaka Water Sports Facility (WWSF) proposes to locate a large building on the foreshore of Lake Wanaka at the western end of Roys Bay. The 420 m2 building, being three times the size of the log cabin, would dominate an area Trust members, many residents and most visitors regard as having special natural qualities. To provide a clearing, for what is essentially a storage shed for the Rowing Club, a substantial cluster of 10 large trees would have to be cut down. These trees provide shade and shelter and along with the poplars they are an attractive feature of the area. Replacing these healthy trees with a large building, along with its associated activities, would compromise the publicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s use and enjoyment of this very popular area. The Trust supports the Rowing Club in finding an appropriate site to store their boats. Alternative sites do exist and we believe these need to be reviewed and adopted. Allowing the first building on this part of the foreshore would set a very bad precedent. We consider it would be a tragedy to see this wonderful natural asset severely compromised. Lake Wanaka and its foreshore are designated as Outstanding Natural Landscape (ONL). The proposed building would be a highly visible structure, undermine Outstanding Natural Values and be totally inconsistent with the Lake Wanaka ONL. The proposed building is contrary to District Plan provisions and it would compromise natural and scenic values of the lake margin Recreation Reserve. The public have been lead to believe the WWSF proposal is a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;done dealâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;; this is certainly not the case. Consent has not been granted and QLDC invites public submissions on the Resource Consent Application. We strongly urge the public to submit against this inappropriate development.
