There’s a new crew in town! We are the M!NT Charitable Trust. A group of local families forging “mint” lives for our children with intellectual disabilities. Living in Wanaka means we don’t have access to the support services and funds readily available in the big city. So it’s time to create something for ourselves. Our mission is to join forces to generate resources for circles of support within our community. We have some exciting initiatives to create more opportunities for those with additional needs to play a role and feel valued here in the Upper Clutha through local events and activities. We have recently kick-started a boot-camp at Fit Collective (with the generous help of

Stonewood Homes) enabling our kids to feel part of something that their typical peer group are also doing. We are continuing this momentum and will be participating in The Ruby Swim. We would love to see you down at the lake to support us.

That’s the combined length of toilet paper donated to the Community Networks Food Bank by Central Wholesale this year. The Harcourts Christmas Food Bank Drive is now an important annual community event with more than 15 local businesses and many other local groups and families either sponsoring or donating. Sadly Christmas can be a tough time for families, especially if they are struggling. The 2018 drive was a fantastic success with 75 Christmas Hampers given to families in need. You don’t necessarily need to donate food. You can

also donate gifts, cash or even toiletries like Central Wholesale have. They joined forces with one of their suppliers (Cotton Soft) to donate an item not

commonly associated with a Food Bank, but still a household necessity. “We really appreciate this support from Central Wholesale. Toilet paper is one of the necessities in life, however, up until last year, we haven’t had this donated.,“ said Kate Murray, Community Networks. If you or your business wishes to donate food, gifts or funds please drop off items to the Community Networks which is located at the new Community Hub on McDougall Street before the 18th December or donate to the Givealittle page ‘Community Networks Wanaka’. Project ‘Together For Kate 2020’ Written by: Nicola Cross As most of you will know by now, a few weeks ago our beautiful friend and dedicated mother of 2, Kate Callaghan was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer that has spread to her lymph nodes and liver. What we have seen in Kate’s case is just how powerful people can be when we all come together to work collectively towards one goal. We are wanting to do more. What we want now for this wee family is to provide them with the space to run, play, grow and thrive for years to come. ‘Together 4 Kate 2020’ is a project where we will be landscaping the family’s new bare section in Lake Hawea in Feb/Mar 2020. We know that sometimes it can be hard to give monetary donations, so we are putting the call out for

any donations of time or resources that you or your business could help with, to help us achieve our goal. We are asking for interest on the below donations now so we can start full planning over the next few weeks. Lake Hawea Volunteer Fire Brigade Target Achieved Thanks to Massive Generosity Written by: Liz Matheson The Lake Hawea Volunteer Fire Brigade are humbled by the huge support received in our quest for a new support vehicle, a Toyota HiAce Maxi Van. Kick starting our fundraising, a huge thanks to Central Lakes Trust who pledged 60% of our vehicle cost, $34,194. The Quiz night and auction held on 15 November raised $20,645, with additional generous cash donations taking our balance beyond the van cost, well towards signwriting, lights, sirens, radios and storage compartments.

Truly an amazing response from our wider community. We wish to thank all who provided support, donating auction items, paying way too much at the auction for those items, giving cash donations, and labour.

Well it sure has been a weather-affected week. There are probably not that many people who are not affected in one way or another and it sure made the news. There has been no end of people going and checking out their new waterfront properties for the week. Town seemed to have a light atmosphere in general with people splashing about in areas that are not accustomed to being knee deep or higher in water. It has been awesome to see so many people lend a hand and help out with sand bag duties, and these things are what add to the lovely community spirit we still have in this town. Sadly some behaviours this week have not been as smart or helpful.

On the weekend some foolish people thought it would be funny to drive their mini jet boat at speed on Mount Aspiring Road near Glendhu Bay in the opposite direction to the traffic who were trying to make their way through the flooded area. This is both unsafe and irresponsible. It clear this is deliberate and photos of the offenders will be posted in the Southern District Police social media page shortly. If you recognise these two people on board or YOU ARE either of those two, it would be best to come and see us. There are a number of roads closed in the area including State Highway 6 north of Fox Glacier for up to 6 weeks. State Highway 1 is closed south of Christchurch which has stranded a number of people from the area. This will affect businesses that rely on the tourist visitors also. So what else happened in the week you ask? Wellâ&#x20AC;Ś We caught another two drunk drivers this week. We attended four domestic incidents this week and took another complaint of a person arranging a purchase on Facebook and the item not arriving. It seems to be a common occurrence nowadays. These offences are traceable when the offender has the funds transferred into their own account. We dealt with a burglary at Hedditch Street where two vehicles were interfered with and a red UE Boom speaker and some Oakley sunglasses were taken. A vehicle was unlawfully taken on Anderson Road, then returned and a diesel pump was reported stolen from a rural address.
