Wanaka Rowing Club Shed, Grand Opening, 23rd August 2020 at 11.00am. On Sunday the 23rd of August the Wanaka Rowing Club is celebrating its new home at the Wanaka Water Sports Facility with a grand opening. The new shed sees the club transition to the next phase of its development. From humble beginnings some 12 years ago at the A & P Show wool shed, the club has grown from two rowers to a club to be reckoned with. This year our junior rowers have had a successful season coming away from the hotly contested South Island Secondary Schools (SISS) regatta with four golds and a silver. Wanaka Rowing Club (rowing as Mt Aspiring College) had its best ever SISS results.

While it was disappointing that Maadi Cup - The New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships, didn’t go ahead as the Wanaka rowers were in peak condition, the next season is full of potential due to our dedicated coaches, a strong contingent of returning juniors, novices ready to race, and a seasoned crew of master rowers. All current and former Wanaka Rowing Club members are invited to celebrate the Grand Opening of the Wanaka Water Sports Facility on Sunday the 23rd of August at 11.00am. Please assemble at the playground near the new rowing shed, for a short welcoming ceremony and celebration at 10.50am. Light refreshments will be served. Please dress warmly as the event is outside. The Women’s and Children’s Clothing Swap is a non-profit, community fundraising event, with all money raised going towards a local charity that event attendees will vote for. Inspired by a good friend who ran a similar event in Canada, Emma has been organising Wanaka Swaps prior to lockdown, with the aim to hold Wanaka Swaps annually.

With the goal of making fashion circular, and looking after our community; Wanaka local Emma Edwards has organised the first ever Wanaka Swaps being held this weekend at The Lake Wanaka Centre.

Donations of good quality, clean clothing can be made on Friday 14th from 7.00 - 9.00pm at the Centre, or bring them along during the event between 10.00am - 4.00pm. Do you need help in having Courageous Conversations? The Otago Chamber of Commerce is offering a workshop in their Dunedin training room and at the same time making the workshop available live through Zoom, so it’s perfect for those based in Wanaka unable to travel to Dunedin. Many people are put off having difficult conversations and often avoid them, but people leaders today more than ever must be skilled at courageous conversations. The Outreach Therapy Dogs are raring to go! Wanaka St John and Age Concern are running the second of 3 trial days for our older residents to get together. It is a chance for some of our senior residents who are perhaps stuck at home with not so many visitors, to get out and have a warm, relaxed social time with other people in a similar situation. Wanaka St John and Aged Concern realised there was a real need for this opportunity for our senior Wanaka residents. Other local towns have this facility, but not Wanaka, but now we do!

We will have a different group there to entertain our guests each time. This time it is the Outreach Therapy Pet Dogs (another St John community initiative) and their human friends. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea provided. No charge for the trial days. This coming Saturday 15th August at the St John rooms, Link Way. 11.00am - 3.00pm. There’s been a notable increase in poor driving behaviours recently, with excess speed playing a role and people taking risks by overtaking where it isn’t safe to do so. This raises alarm bells for people who call 111 through fear of an accident waiting to happen. So while it’s been great to have a continuation of these stunning Wanaka days, please be patient with others, and don’t be in a rush to get to your destination too hastily. Getting a speeding fine is not going to make anyone’s day and nor is being involved in a collision, please slow down and stay in control. On the note of staying in control, that also includes correctly staying in your lane. Even with a vastly lower number of tourists on our beautiful country roads, Kiwi’s are still holding up their own when it comes to driving outside their lane, and over the centre-line… do you really want to be the vehicle coming the other way? Away from the roads, Police are continuing to investigate two unlawful shootings, one of a deer and one of a cow with unborn calf on separate properties in Lake Hāwea around the 31st July 2020. Unlawful hunting is not only dangerous to the hunter but puts property owners and members of the public at risk when they are unaware of hunters on their properties. We urge people to contact and seek landowner’s permission before entering onto private property to hunt, and to ensure they know where property boundaries are. Anyone with information that may assist with investigations are urged to call Police on 105 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Some positive news, Mount Aspiring College held their Formal this weekend. Your local Police were asked to be involved, sadly not for our dance coaching skills, but resting the minds of parents and teachers that no-one had been drinking alcohol at the Formal, prior to the post-event out of town. Many of you are aware we have been offering a delivery service to many of our elderly and vulnerable since the threat of COVID reached NZ. We have continued this service for a small few locals that find it easier to email their grocery list rather than coming to store, and we realise there are many people in our local community that require this service for many varying reasons.
