A collective group of artistically minded individuals, businesses, and community groups have come together with the goal of championing Wanaka’s creative sector, with a weekend full of events October 17 – 18, 2020. Toi will be a celebration of creativity, design and excellence for both locals and visitors to enjoy. Toi will feature two days of workshops, exhibitions, and performance. It will immediately follow the 3 Lakes Cultural Trust’s inaugural Renewart event and will be just before the WAO Reset Summit, rounding out what will be a month long celebration of ideas and creativity for Wanaka. “Wānaka has a thriving design scene and is fast building a reputation as a hub for creative thought,” says Ignite Wanaka Executive Officer, Naomi Lindsay. “This initiative will further strengthen this growing reputation and shine a light on the incredible talent and businesses we have within the community. Creativity and design-led thinking has also been proven to aid with recovery after crisis.”

“Great design not only solves problems, but also creates new opportunities. But most importantly, design can reveal plausible futures for us to choose; something we need more than ever” says Monique Kelly from Revology, one of the many businesses involved in Toi. “The Māori word 'toi' often translates as knowledge, skill, excellence, source, origin, or mastery. The collective engaged local designer, Britt Davies from Studio Acht to create the brand identity and the result truly conveys the essence of the event” says Nicola King, Marketing Executive for Lake Wanaka Tourism. It’s going to be a fabulous weekend! With an incredible cross-section of artists and designers, from photographers, interior, graphic, jewellery, through to fashion, taking part in this inaugural event. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Repair Revolution coming to Hawea Following the success of our Wanaka event, Wastebusters’ repair trailer is bringing the Repair Revolution to Hawea this Sunday 18 October, 10.00am - 2.00pm, Lake Hawea Community Centre.

Find out how satisfying it is to patch up a favourite toy, or pair of jeans. Some repair jobs may not be able to be done on the day but you will leave with advice and knowledge about where to get them repaired. So dig out your broken treasures and let’s see if we can repair them together!

We have a team of amazing fixers who will be volunteering their time to give advice and help with repairs on all kinds of things. So far we have repairers confirmed for the following items: clothing/textiles, laptops, bikes, bags, crockery and toys. Check our Facebook event or website for more on what you can bring to our events (and remember to bring any parts you think you might need)!

We’re also holding repair events in Alexandra and Queenstown in November, and plan to establish a database of local fixers, so it’s easier to find a pro if you can’t DIY a fix.

The project for Wanaka to be single-use cupfree by 2022 is steaming ahead and it’s now normal for Wanaka locals not to leave home without a BYO cup in hand.

Before the SUCfree project, over 1 million takeaway coffee cups ended up in Wanaka’s landfill or contaminating our recycling streams every year.

You don’t have to shell out for a flash cup when any cup – or jar – will do, is the message Revology Concept Store and Tea House were promoting at their recent DIY keep cup workshop.

Now cafes and caravans all over town have cup lending schemes, or are running cup libraries, and one-by-one they’re going completely SUCfree. In what may be a global first, Wanaka is on track to being single-use cup-free in just over a year.

People had a ball creating 50 groovy glass cups at last week’s workshop.

That would mean no more single-use cups being used for a minute or two and then chucked in the bin… just folks drinking their coffee responsibly and showing the world how easily it’s done. A box of 50 cool glass coffee cups are going to be donated to a local café, to be given out to customers who need their own cup. Rowing the length of the Lake “Has anyone rowed the length of Lake Wanaka before?” A question by the relative new-comer Rob Taylor, of the fellow Masters rower, Shane Gibson. The idea of rowing the length of Lake Wanaka seemed to Rob to be an amazing achievement and an exciting prospect to tick off a “bucket list” item. In 2017, Shane Gibson and Jamie Hutter were the first to row the 44.5km course, from Makarora to the foreshores of Lake Wanaka. The fact that this had been done before only inspired Rob more. “Would you be keen to do it again? In a quad? We could make it a fundraiser?”

Cool new life for old jars

They partnered up with good café guide UYO, and SUCfree Wanaka to show people how easy it is to repurpose glass jars into keep cups. “We used good old inner tubes from our local bike shop and gave Wanaka’s jars a new life” says Revology’s, Monique Kelly. The Revology ethos is that everything has a purpose and must fall either in the circular economy (materials are recycled and/or recyclable) or the bio economy (materials melt back into the earth).

And from here the idea moved to a reality. The quad of Rob Taylor, Shane Gibson, Jamie Hutter and Mike Toepfer is planning to row the length of Lake Wanaka in late October, early November. Obviously a fair amount of training and planning goes into any event such as this, but the weather will ultimately dictate when this event can take place. The lads are hoping for a slight tail wind on the day. There has been a Give-A-Little page set up with the proceeds collected being donated to four charities; LandSAR, Wanaka Children’s Medical Trust, The Wanaka Food Bank, and the Wanaka Rowing Club. Donations are greatly appreciated and the guys are thankful of the support already given.

I hope everyone has survived the school holidays and are set for another term ahead! Early in the week Police responded to a recurrent driving complaint on Gunn Road which saw the driver stopped and educated on his driving manner, along with some other issues. On Tuesday, Police intervened when a couple had an argument outside the supermarket. Police assisted the pair with getting them where they needed to go in order to deescalate the situation. Wednesday, Police investigated a trespassing incident at Three Parks New World, and also a suspicious call regarding a couple arguing on McDougall Street where a knife was mentioned who left together before Police arrived. Thursday, Officers assisted with locating a missing teenager in Albert Town, who was reported overdue by a family member – they were located safe and well. Later they checked on the large party on the corner of Brownston and Dungarvon Street. Everyone was ok and in good spirits. Following this, Police helped a family in need through rough times, calling upon our fellow partner agencies to help out. Friday, a report of a cat being shot by a slug gun was received. Two slugs were removed from the cat by a vet. Police are actively seeking anyone with any knowledge on this to get in touch either at the Wanaka Station, or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Following this, Officers patrolling towards Makarora spotted a ‘controlled’ burn on the hills by The Neck, that was now requiring monsoon buckets to stop it spreading. FENZ investigated accordingly. Later, in town there was some disorder at Mint Bar where door staff were assaulted.

During the day on Saturday we were able to help a woman in labour get to the medical centre a bit quicker than normal with a Police escort – congratulations - and feel free to name your baby after the officer who helped… unless it’s a girl, in which case, that may get a bit awkward. In the evening, we had a number of driving complaints regarding a vehicle, which uncovered a drunk driver who will soon appear in court. Sunday was certainly not a day of rest, with another drinkdriver dealt with and reports of questionable people looking into driveways. If in doubt, give us a call, always. A little word on cell phones while driving to finish off. When you drive past the Police Station on your phone (twice), yes, you will still get a ticket. Have a great week you amazing people!
