Showband (picture) and stars work hard to get the 24th annual show onto the stage of the Lake Wanaka Centre for you. One key to this very successful show is the commitment and determination of a very dedicated team of volunteers.

15 bands are in contention for the People’s Choice title, and in 2012 MAC band Oddity only just missed out in the top position.

New Zealand Optometrist Katie Bennetts’ Fundraising Page for Unite For Sight

My name is Katie Bennetts and I’m an optometrist at Central Vision Optometry here in Wanaka. In November/December of this year I’m going to do some volunteer work in Ghana and then in Cameroon.

Astonishingly, almost 80% of visual impairment worldwide is preventable, and 36 million people are needlessly blind. However the major cause of visual impairment (43%) is uncorrected refractive error -they simply need glasses!

I have been wanting to volunteer abroad since my third year of university, but back then I didn’t have the funds to get myself anywhere, and I was also concerned I wouldn’t be as much help when I was still a student. Now I have several years of experience under my belt I feel it’s time I did my bit to try to turn these figures around.

In Ghana I will be volunteering with an organisation called Unite For Sight (www.uniteforsight.org). I will spend two weeks working with a partner eye clinic in Accra where I will screen for eye disease, implement education programmes, and coordinate sight restoring surgery for children and adults. Unite For Sight is working towards eliminating preventable blindness, and teams volunteers with local eye care professionals to provide quality eye care for all. There are five main clinics scattered throughout Ghana, all of which are owned and operated by local ophthalmologists, nurses and optometrists. This means they are providing sustainable care, a concept that is important to Unite for Sight as an organisation. Outreach clinics also provide care to those people in villages who are several hours or more from the main clinics. Patients are screened for conditions and treated locally if possible, but may be transported to one of the main clinics for surgery.

Following the two weeks in Ghana I will go to Cameroon with an organisation called VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) International (http://vosh.org/). Again, I will be working with other volunteers and a few local practitioners to screen for eye disease, and provide glasses and/

or medication to those in need. VOSH clinics are held in different locations all around the world wherever their volunteers arrange them. They are not permanent clinics but rather short term clinics to help as many people as possible in the time available. They are usually in places where poverty is rife and it is not possible to set up a permanent facility. In this clinic I will see up to 800 patients a day, much more than a usual day at work which is usually 10-14 people max!

Although I actually don’t live in Wanaka (I’ve recently moved from Queenstown to Alexandra), I have been working for Tui at Central Vision Optometry for coming up two years and I definitely feel part of the community. I have my own patients, and have got to know many of the characters of Wanaka who frequent the medical centre. I’m hoping the community groups of Wanaka and Central Otago might be interested in supporting me trying to do my bit for humanity. As you may know, Tui has spent her time volunteering in Vanuatu in the past. Now she’s got her hands full with a baby she’s been kind enough to allow me the time off work to have my turn.

Unite For Sight asks all volunteers to bring with them 600 pairs of over-thecounter type reading glasses (+1.00 to

+4.00 power). People can drop these into my work at Central Vision Optometry in the Wanaka Lakes Health Centre and I will take them with me. They can also pop any small change in the jar at OCD Cafe or at Central Vision Optometry if they would like to donate to the cause.

The kind people at Pack & Send of Queenstown have offered to ship the glasses over for me at a fraction of the usual cost, which is a huge help to save me money on excess baggage!

Alternatively, if people would like to make a financial donation to Unite For Sight directly they can do so on my fundraising page, 100% of which goes towards care and medication for patients.
