Nat and Ben are local baristas, as well as environmental science graduates who channeled their passions into changing something simple: how you drink your daily brew. This basic idea slowly evolved into WANAKUP - a charitable trust, launched right here in Wanaka in April 2019. It’s mission: to reduce the daily waste generated in cafes by providing an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to takeaway cups. Wanakups are minimalist and thermally insulated. In other words, there’s no need for sleeves, or any excess waste. The cups are designed to be durable enough to survive even your wildest adventures. Wanakups are now available in over a dozen locations in Otago, where they are available to be borrowed for a $10 deposit, swapped for a fresh cup, or returned for your $10 back!
And if you really like the cup, you can just keep it and re-use it for the rest of your life! Other cafes, such as Brews and Bikes in Nelson, have picked up on the success and chose to implement the Wanakup swap scheme. As more and more businesses participate, more people are becoming aware of the unnecessary waste created by single use cups on a daily basis. Through a simple change in the way you drink your beverage, we can collectively reduce New Zealand’s carbon footprint. When asked about the reasoning for founding the charitable trust, Nat and Ben said, “We’re really keen to preserve our beautiful home, and hope that a small change in a small town like this could help spark others to do the same in their own home town. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Food Bank stocks up for Christmas
written by Community Networks “Cash donations are hugely appreciated as they enable us to restock the Food Bank when essential items run low, and they contribute to the vouchers we give for fresh food,” Ms Murray said.
It’s that time of year again, when Food Bank donations are sought to help people struggling at Christmas. Kate Murray, manager of Community Networks Wanaka, which runs the service, said donations of non-perishable items will be gratefully received in Food Bank baskets at supermarkets, or at the Community Hub. Ms Murray said the annual Food Bank Drive will not be held next month. “It’s been a wonderful event and we’re so grateful to the organiser, Nikki McKay, and all the volunteers, but we’ve instead decided to focus on gathering food and cash donations throughout the year.” People wanting to support the Food Bank can also make a cash donation, instead of food, Ms Murray said, via the Community Networks’ Givealittle page or by contacting her directly.

Community Networks is working with New World Three Parks this year, to make it easier for people wanting to make a cash donation. From mid November to mid December, people can simply add a donation to their bill at the checkout.
“There’s demand for food parcels year-round and the demand has been unprecedented this year, due to Covid, so donations of cash or nonperishable items are appreciated anytime.” People referred for a Christmas hamper this year will receive a voucher to choose their own festive treats, a box of staples and gifts donated by local businesses. Vouchers cannot be used for alcohol or tobacco.

Monday saw Police receive a complaint of blackmail from a town resident, the matter is still under investigation. A local male was also served with a demerit point driving suspension and has taken to using a bicycle for the next three months. Tuesday saw Police recover cannabis plants from a location in the Hawea area, Police are continuing enquiries to identify the green fingered cultivators, perhaps they should try tomatoes instead. Wednesday saw Police deal with mental health issues- they have been referred to the appropriate counselling services. Thursday saw Police enquiring into a delivery of MDMA to a Wanaka Youth that had been ordered from overseas. A local male was also interviewed in relation to alleged suspended driving. Wanaka Police also assisted in the accident at Tarras in which a local male resident lost his life- our condolences go out to his family and friends for this tragic loss of life. Please think before you moan when stopped for any traffic offending, we are trying to save lives. The early hours of Saturday morning a local bar manager discovered a nearby shop had been entered by a drunken male whom I must say had not been a client at his bar. He diligently and safely followed this male who fled the Helwick Street shop and the male was located hiding at Base Backpackers where he was not a guest. Intoxication was the great driver of this offending. Later on Saturday morning the male continued his strange behaviour and damaged the kitchen and a lodge at the campground he was staying at. Beware of not becoming intoxicated and irrational. A court appearance is to follow, this male has now left town returning to his hometown to try to get some support Sunday saw Police assisting our Coast Guard in two water rescues. Please check the weather conditions before you head out onto the Lake to ensure your safety, no one wants to be a spoil-sport but caution and a check of the forecast may save your life. Police also identified a vehicle that had been stripped of identifying marks after a crash in the Hawea area, thankfully they left the Vehicle WOF check sheet which identified them. They will now be recovering the vehicle and area being dealt with in relation to the crash. Keep safe this week, be careful not to drink and drive, treat each other with the kindness you would like to be shown yourself.
