28th August, 2020, marks 30 bright and successful years of Daffodil Day in New Zealand. It is 30 years of volunteer enthusiasm, along with medical & support care teams coming together to help raise funds for the Cancer Society. To continue this tradition, our team of local volunteers will be having fundraising stations at 7 different locations on the day. They will be situated at the Wanaka Medical Centre, New World Three Parks, New World Wanaka, Mitre 10, Paperplus, The Post Office, and Pembroke Patisserie in Albert Town.

$5 raffle tickets will be sold on the day, and with the help of young Students in the Community, the Mount Aspiring College team will be doing door-to-door sales. Irrespective of alert levels, the draw will be done on the 28th August, 2020.

To mark 30 years, we are hoping to do 30 draws for the raffle. We are calling out to any individuals or businesses that would like to donate anything towards the prize draw. No donation is too big or too small. For the month of August, Pembroke Patisserie in Albert Town, is kindly donating $1 from every custard square sold, and Kota Restaurant & Bar will be donating $3 from every ‘fish of the day’ sold as main dish. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Inspirational women in Wanaka, via Zoom Pauline is a coach and consultant, specialising in coaching and leadership development. She has over 20 years’ experience at a national governance level and is co-founder of ‘Females Achieving Brilliance’ (FAB), an international leadership network for women in sport. Pauline also leads a Women in Coaching project for the International Council of Coaching Excellence (ICCE).

We have a wonderful opportunity to engage via zoom, with two very inspirational women who will speak on Women in Sport and Leadership. Kereyn Smith MNZM (from South Otago) and Pauline Harrison (now a NZ resident), have really interesting stories to tell and will share a wealth of knowledge and insights with us. Kereyn Smith grew up on a farm in Clinton, South Otago. Like many of our current Olympians, coming from a rural background was no barrier for her and she is now the most powerful person in sport in New Zealand. Kereyn’s journey from Clinton, via South Otago High School, to PE School at Otago University and into a teaching career is the start of an amazing story. She is now Secretary General of the New Zealand Olympic Committee and has

overseen our most successful period in terms of medals won in Olympic and Commonwealth Games’ history. Awarded the Queen’s MNZM in 2015 for Services to Governance in Sport, Kereyn is respected around the world for her integrity, impact and ambition.

Books needed for Rotary Book Sale The annual Rotary Club of Wanaka Book Sale is fast approaching and the Rotary Club is seeking books. This year the book sale will take place over three days commencing Friday 2 October and ending on Sunday 4 October. The Rotary Club of Wanaka is actively preparing for the sale which involves cataloguing and pricing books. While the Club has a large store of books from previous sales they are always looking for new ones.

“It’s an opportunity for people to have a bit of a spring clean by giving books they don’t need anymore, knowing they are going to a worthwhile cause,” said Rotary Club of Wanaka President, Mike Elliot. “Proceeds from the sale go back into the community.” The book sale is an annual fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Wanaka, raising over $10,000 for charity and worthwhile causes. It will be held at the Lake Wanaka Centre. Books can be dropped off at Wanaka Mitre 10 during their opening hours.

Well we head back into some form of Covid-19 restrictions, and try to prevent the damage this virus can cause to our community, particularly to our treasured elders. Police will continue to have input into the compliance with the restrictions focusing on education and gathering the team of 5 million for the next round of this battle. We are aware it is a stressful time for all, and one in which we must all do our best to follow the advice and directions to maintain public health and preserve life.

On the normal crime and offending front, Monday saw Police receive a report of a vehicle failing to give way on the Red Bridge and a dispute as to which party should give way. The matter is still under investigation. We also received a report of a local woman freedom camping on Eely Point Reserve. Tuesday saw Police dealing with a severely intoxicated person at an Upton street address. We also apprehended an intoxicated person for driving with excess breath alcohol. On Thursday Police received a report of theft of Elan Amphibio skis at the Cardrona Alpine Resort. We can’t stress this enough, please keep your ski or snowboard gear in sight when up the mountains, as some visitors to the resorts unfortunately do not share the same values and morals, and feel they are entitled to take your property. Friday saw Police deal with two motorists for excess breath alcohol. One driver is off to court to explain themselves to the judge. Saturday saw Police dealing with an intoxicated male found inside an address, unfortunately it was not his home address. A reminder to keep your doors locked. Hopefully the person involved will reflect on their degree of intoxication and inability to find their way to their own home. Throughout the week Police dealt with three family harm incidents. Local support services including mental health teams have been engaged after some of these occurrences. We are again heading into a period of uncertainty for our local community with the limitation of internal travel, particularly from Auckland. This will further damage our economy and increase stress. Try and enjoy the simpler things in life and remember think of the common good of the whole community. Reflect on what is really important and BE KIND! Have a safe week.
