Just over 600 cavalcaders (walkers, bikers, riders and wagons) plus their supporters will descend on Hawea for what will be an incredible sight. From 10.00am, the public will see horses and wagons travelling along Lakeview Terrace, Capell Ave, down pub hill on to Domain Rd, continuing on to the Hawea Field entry: $5 per car for car parking; $5 per adult; Domain, re-enacting the first Cobb & Co. coach service children free. MY COMMUNITY NEWS U3A Swings into 2019 Written by: John Binney, Secretary Mt Aspiring U3A

‘The jazz evening provided a fantastic lead in to the U3A 2019 program of monthly lectures and Interest Group activities. The event was such a success it will be repeated next year.’ Lectures in the first half of the year include Terry Davis of the Otago Goldfields Trust, convincing us that not all participants in the Gold Rush were rogues and vagabonds, John Blennerhassett discussing the Bouwer case and Liam Corkery, the NZ Trade Commissioner to Beijing, giving an insight into how NZ must adapt in working with one of their major trading partners.

The hills were alive with the sound of music as the Mt Aspiring U3A group kicked off its 2019 program in late January with an evening of jazz at the Olive Grove. Sixty Mt Aspiring U3A members, guests and the Olive Grove’s resident family of ducks enjoyed two hours of popular jazz melodies performed by the local jazz quartet ‘Three’s a Crowd’. Mt Aspiring U3A President Richard Paxman said

Richard went on to describe the concept of the Mt Aspiring U3A which is different to other U3A’s in the Wanaka area. He said ‘The Mt Aspiring U3A provides an opportunity for people who are no longer working full time to meet in a social, interactive and mentally stimulating environment’. While U3A members regularly attend monthly lectures covering a broad range of topics, Richard described how the heart of this U3A is interest groups that

meet at members houses to discuss specific topics of common interest. These groups of up to 12 people discuss subjects as diverse as the history of medicine, current affairs, the history of the Upper Clutha, astronomy and earth sciences. There is also a walking group, a floral arts group, a movies group and a creative writing group. These Interest Groups are very interactive and all members are encouraged to contribute. Richard noted that the list of groups is ever expanding and limited only by the interest of members. Richard advised membership of Mt Aspiring U3A is open to all and has grown rapidly to almost 100 since the group was formed in mid-2018. New Trustee: opportunity awaits at Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust Written by: The Te Kakano team Te Kākano is Wanaka’s thriving community-based native plant nursery. We grow local native plants and organise plantings to restore native habitat and are assisted in this by many wonderful volunteers. Last season we planted 3,588 trees and shrubs in the Upper Clutha area thanks to 3,250 hours given by volunteers! We have a team of six dedicated Trustees and employ two contractors – a nursery manager and an administration/community liaison officer. We have entered a growth phase and are extending the nursery to provide more space and improved facilities for our volunteers as well as the increasing number of plants we are propagating. We are also

part of “Love Lake Wanaka” water improvement project for additional riparian planting around rivers and streams that flow into Lake Wanaka in association with the Upper Clutha Lakes Trust. It is now time to grow our Trustee team – would you be interested? We are looking for someone with preferably good governance experience but primarily a passion for conservation and habitat restoration. So the keen few have again completed another years Challenge Wanaka, congratulations to you all. I was to be in a team this year but one of us decided to have a crack as an individual, so I was ditched. He actually did quite well on his own, so I guess he can be forgiven. Vehicle crashes and search and rescue operations have been the flavour of this week’s activities for the Wanaka Police. On Monday two males were seen trying to steal money from the camping fee box at the Cameron Flat campsite. These funds are used to improve and maintain facilities in our DOC areas. These resources are thin and anyone caught stealing will be dealt with appropriately. On Tuesday one person received a broken ankle when the van she was traveling in rolled several times off the Wanaka – Luggate Highway. They had unsuccessfully tried to avoid a collision after another vehicle performed a U-turn in front of them. Everyone concerned were wearing seatbelts which undoubtedly prevented further injury. One person was charged with careless driving causing injury.

Alpine Cliff Rescue were put on standby after a person received suspected spinal injuries after a canyoning accident. The Queenstown Rescue Helicopter was able to successfully winch the patient to safety and transport them to Dunedin hospital. On Wednesday a vehicle careered off the road and through a farm fence before coming to rest in a paddock off Riverbank Road. The driver said she made the mistake of trying to drink from her water bottle whilst driving. A new meaning to ‘drink driving’. Thursday afternoon saw police attend three vehicle crashes in three hours. Luckily all were non injury. One of these crashes involved a Toyota Rav 4 rolling several times on Warren Street. It had driven straight through a give way intersection and collided with another vehicle. All of these crashes were avoidable if the drivers had been concentrating on their main task of driving their car. On Friday someone decided to make off with a concrete turtle that had been standing guard of a garden on Kingston Street, Albert Town. Any information that can help return the turtle will be gladly received. Aspiring Helicopters and a Wanaka Alpine Cliff Rescue team were called on Friday evening and Sunday to assist with two rescues. On Friday they picked up a tramper from the Timaru area with a suspected dislocated shoulder after a beacon was activated. And on Sunday they were called to recover three trampers who found themselves in an unhappy place on steep terrain above Lochnagar. With only their egos hurt they were helped back to safer surroundings. Wanaka Police have been handed a lot of lost property lately, so if you are missing a piece of jewellery come and ask. Digital Marketing Specialist The Alpine Group is a family owned business based in Wanaka, operating across a number of industries. This position will be working with our tourism brands including Minaret Station, Alpine Helicopters and Southern Lakes Heliski. We are looking for a Digital Marketing Specialist to help grow our online and direct marketing program. With a relevant Bachelor’s degree, we are seeking applicants who have significant experience implementing and managing marketing projects and digital activity across multiple brands. The successful applicant will plan, develop and co-ordinate digital marketing activities for the group, including managing all social media activity (both organic and targeted campaigns), website design and management, graphic design and photography, as well as an advanced understanding of search engine optimisation and analytics. Ideally the successful candidate has experience within the tourism industry. Significant experience and advanced skills in the following areas are required. • Website development including building and maintaining company wide websites using platforms including Squarespace, Joomla and Wordpress. • Graphic design including the ability to design digital and print material using the Adobe suite (Photoshop, Lightroom and Illustrator). • Social media campaign management across Facebook and Instagram. The day after this near incident, I was driving up the hill through Albert Town to witness someone on a bike, slowly making their way up on the WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD! Cars were travelling in the opposite direction, coming over the crest of the hill at 80ks and having to suddenly swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid the cyclist. I was gobsmacked at the lack of common sense of the rider. I am a fan of biking myself so would never deter anyone from using the road. What I would ask is that cyclists remember it is their responsibility to be seen. If you want to be treated like a car, act like one and follow the road rules. Not only are you endangering your life, but also others around you. Stay safe! Concerned motorist

Be seen, be responsible! As a responsible driver, whenever I get behind the wheel, my safety and the safety of other road users is paramount. The other evening after dark, while pulling out of Anderson Rd, I was very close to striking someone off their bike. They were wearing black clothing and no lights on the bike, completely invisible. It

was a matter of sheer luck and timing that I missed them. I was not travelling at speed, but would still have caused harm to the rider which would have been horrific for them and the guilt I would have felt would be immense.
