Armistice Day has a very special place in New Zealand History. Every year we commemorate this day in memory of the sacrifices of so many. Not only the ultimate sacrifice of the many killed and wounded throughout World War I but also the many other lives affected; those of the families and loved ones left behind. It is with great pride that the Upper Clutha RSA continues to commemorate this day and recognise the huge cost to our country both in lives, and ongoing suffering to the families. This year marks the 99th year of Armistice Day. Sadly, we no longer have any living veterans with us who fought through World War I, but their legacy is all around us. They gave so much in a time of need to allow all of us to be able to enjoy a peaceful and prosperous life in a country we love. Armistice Day is also a day of reflection, looking at our past and remembering those family members

that were involved. It is also a time to look forward to the future and the promise that brings. The Upper Clutha RSA is very happy to see more of today’s youth getting involved in the commemorations and showing a real enthusiasm in continuing to remember the deeds of so many, so long ago. It is the youth that are our future and it is days like Armistice Day that allow us to stop and take stock of how fortunate we are.

The famous Book Sale has been running for over 25 years and the Wanaka community have been very generous in donating amazing books. We are truly grateful for your support this year, it has been overwhelming. After 25 years of Book Sales you would think we would have had enough, but fundraising events like this that involve the whole club, provide a great platform for members to engage with colleagues outside of meetings and better still - talk with all the customers pouring in the door!

Aspiring Beginnings Family Gala Day This month our community based centre ‘Aspiring Beginnings Early Learning Centre (historically known as ABC), that was established by the community in 1997 is turning 20. The centre was built to meet the growing needs of working families and to provide a quality early childhood centre for infants, toddlers and young children. The core values of family and community are still strong and evident throughout the programme. These values and our strong philosophy were recognised last year when we were acknowledged by the Education Review Office (ERO) and received an outstanding report rating us in the top 10% of centres in NZ.

Over the past year we have been working on developing our additional gifted land and have raised almost $80,000 in grants and fundraising. We are thrilled with the progress we have made so far including some special aspects - our dry/ water slide, water feature and bike park. An amazing place where children can be children and are always covered in fun. We welcome you to attend our 20th birthday Gala on Saturday 11th of November from 10.00am – 2.00pm to celebrate our birthday and view our new outdoor environment. There will be something for everyone including

baking and plant stalls, chocolate wheel, face painting and yummy food.

The collab upcycling workshop will demonstrate how to upcycle a t-shirt into a reusable bag. For just a gold coin donation, participants will learn how to transform an old t-shirt and make their own t-shirt bag to take home. Live music and food stalls will add to the celebratory vibe of the Sunday afternoon event. Kahu Youth have been practicing making t-shirt bags at two sessions and are looking forward to sharing their practical skills with the wider

Hopefully the white caps on the mountains is the last sting in the tail of winter. I’ve had to put the speedos on hold and looking at dragging out the snowboard again. This week was a bit of everything for your local Police. We received a theft complaint after a ladies diamond ring has gone missing whilst staying at a local nursing home. An iPhone 6S was taken from a class room at Mt Aspiring college. If it’s not yours, leave it alone. The risk, by far outweighs any gains when it comes to thefts such as this. The consequences of which could stay with you for a life time. Thursday was the busiest day of the week for Police. In the early hours a male was found naked from the waist down asleep on a couch in rental accommodation. He had clearly consumed too much alcohol DIWHU GULQNLQJ DW D ORFDO EDU 7KH RYHUVHDV IDPLO\ ZHUH ERWK KRUUL¿HG and scared of what this person could do next. This is not what we want our visitors going home to tell their families Wanaka is all about. He was unceremoniously dragged home and delivered to his lucky house mates. An overseas driver lost control on the gravel section of Mount Aspiring road and crashed into a tree. Lucky for them they escaped without injury. The same cannot be said for the driver who tried to cross the intersection of Riverbank Road and Wanaka-Luggate Highway at rush hour. He failed to see a following vehicle approaching from the airport and pulled out in front. He sustained a nasty cut after his head went through the side window. 3ROLFH DVVLVWHG WKH ¿UH EULJDGH ZLWK D VLJQL¿FDQW ¿UH RQ WKH URDGVLGH just before Glendhu bay. This could have been ignited by a discarded cigarette or similar. This summer is shaping up to be very dry and we will all have to be extra vigilant. A domestic harm incident was attended which resulted in one person being charged with a minor assault, alcohol being a major contributor. A man with a warrant to arrest was discovered living locally. He has now been apprehended and will face court on several charges. An intoxicated male was arrested and later released on a pre charge warning after police tried to prevent him from being run down as he stood on the road just out of town. This male didn’t appreciate the kind words of advice from police and chose to return a mouth full of abuse. Several of the above incidents would not have occurred if alcohol hadn’t been abused. With the summer holiday season (Silly season) fast approaching we encourage people to enjoy themselves without going over the top. We also need to look out for each other and make sure our friends get home safe. Have a safe week team. Healthy choices.
