MY COMMUNITY NEWS Challenge Kids and Adaptive racing returns at brand new venue
the Triathlon Festival. This event is open to anyone under 25 with an impairment (either intellectual or physical) and is only $10 to enter. It will also be out at Glendhu Bay. Your kids favourite event of the year is back! The Puzzling World Junior and Intermediate Challenge races are all systems go for Thursday, 18 February and Friday, 19 February in its new home at Glendhu Bay. Registrations are live on the www.Challenge-Wanaka.com site, as well as being sent home via the local schools, so sign up your little ones so they can have an awesome day with their mates. Every child will get a secret prize from Puzzling World and a medal for them to treasure. Challenge Wanaka are assisting with the transportation of bikes to and from schools and parents can drop their children’s bikes off if they wish between 4.00 - 7.00pm the day before the event.
A big Expo is being planned out at the new venue with lots of great stores, goodies on offer, food, coffee, brewery and music. Wildfire risk research underway in Wānaka Fire researchers from the Crown research institute Scion, are investigating what residents of northern Wānaka and Albert Town know about wildfire risk and how to prepare for it. Wildfires are nothing new in Otago, but new subdivisions around Wānaka mean more people are living close to flammable vegetation in areas like Mt Iron, the Sticky Forest and the banks of the Clutha River. The wildfire at Lake Ōhau in October, which destroyed 53 homes and damaged many others, shows just how serious that risk can be. A hotter and drier climate is increasing the risk even further. The researchers want to understand how people view the wildfire risk here in Wānaka, so they can identify ways to encourage and support people to be better prepared. Their work is being funded by Fire and Emergency

All offerings from Christmas services in the Upper Clutha Presbyterian Church will go to a project in North Bangladesh through aid agency, International Needs. The people are extremely poor, living in unsanitary conditions which affects their health and well-being. The project will provide toilets that don’t drain into rivers which are used for drinking and bathing in, and hand washing stations. It will also provide funding for projects such as rearing chickens to raise their standard of living.

New Zealand and is part of a wider research programme in the Resilience to Nature’s Challenges National Science Challenge. Researchers visited Wānaka in late November to interview over 40 residents, homeowners and emergency response agency staff. Now they are conducting a survey of everyone in northern Wānaka and Albert Town between Highway 84 and the Clutha River, to make sure they capture a wider range of views. Some local residents have already received survey invitations by postcard or email but everyone in the area is asked to participate. As a reward to people who finish the survey, the researchers are offering a chance to win vouchers to Monkey Farm café in Northlake. Just as Santa gets his suit back from the dry-cleaners and he waxes the runners on his sleigh, local Police continue to deal with a few incidents around the town. On the 14th of December there was a burglary at The Catch on Ardmore Street. A local man with a liking for bacon and Pepsi was arrested and he heads off to Court for a chat with the Judge. Another burglary was reported by the owner of a Parry Crescent, Hawea address on arrival to his holiday home. Police were able to notify the owner of the offender’s identity when the matter was reported, due to recent, similar events in the area. On the 17th December a male was spoken to by Police at the Albert Town Campground in relation to shooting an air-rifle near tents and some advice passed on about safety.
MOUNT IRON TRACK - As we all start to enjoy the summer conditions and lovely walking weather, the Department of Conservation would like to remind everyone that dogs are welcome on the Mount Iron Track, but must be kept on a lead. The Mount Iron Track crosses private land, the landowners have agreed that dogs are allowed on the track but must be on a leash. Dogs can be off-leash on the Outlet and Hikuwai Link Tracks, but are required to always be under control. A reminder that all dog waste is to be removed and disposed of appropriately. On the 18th December Police were advised that the Wanaka Gun Club had been broken into. Fortunately firearms and ammunition are not stored on the property, enquiries are continuing. On the 19th, a set of window glass holding bars off a vehicle left on the roadside in Warren Street were discovered missing when the owner returned to retrieve them. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of the bars is asked to call Wanaka Police. Police attended a fight on Brownston Street on the evening of the 19th, where two males who were denied entry to a bar became argumentative. Remember that entry will be denied into bars if you show signs of intoxication. Also that night, a male was discovered asleep on Lakeside Road and was close to being run over. A reminder to arrange transport into town and back home at the end of the night. A French National was processed for drink driving that night, the reading being very high - an instant 28-day suspension as well as a Court appearance. Finally - the two young men that found the iPad last Monday, using their IT skills to advise the owner of its whereabouts deserve the ‘Key to Wanaka’ (free ice-creams) for a day for their kind deed. The owner was most impressed. Well done guys! We want to use this time to remind everyone to lock their doors at night. We continue to attend jobs where people are being woken in the middle of the night to strangers in their homes, where alcohol or drugs have left the member of the public confused and unable to find their way home and try their luck at the first door they find unlocked. A reminder that everything should be in moderation, including alcohol which causes most of our harm at this time of year.
